I am not sure if I understand your question but...
I unlocked bootloader and the data was NOT erased.
My phone was not encrypted.
I hope it helps.
Is your device RN4(Mido)?? And U Unlocked after 7.0 or on 6.0.1?
Unlocking bootloader won't erase your data, unless your data partition is encrypted (iirc).

Maybe you just did not received this text, but you don't need it.
Just download the tool, login and try to unlock. Most likely it will work.

I flashed my phone with kate_global_images_7.5.19_20170519.0000.00_6.0_global in order to unlock the bootloader via mi unlock. The phone has successfully connected to mi cloud and can be located on the i.mi.com website. If I go into developer options and tap on the button to bind the phone to my account for unlocking it just keeps telling me to try again in another couple of minutes. This seems to be a really common problem and I haven't been able to find a solution. Any ideas? Thanks.
Same here. Been waiting for 5 days now after getting permission. Still fails to bind. This whole official unlock way is a total POS. It even says after you are granted permission you can unlock right away but that's not true at all. I also have SE and dev rom btw.
maybe try to flash miui 8 via fastboot..
i used fastboot rom miui 8 , miflash (not xiaomiflash) ver 2016, and unlock ver 1.1..

MIUI 8 what? The dev rom 7.x is MIUI 8. Do you mean dev or stable? I was on MIUI 8 stable before but it didn't help.
my issues, evrytime i flashed miui rom, my imei isn't showing up (i need to official unlock to flash lastest los)
i tried some rom dev 7.x.x.x , but i cant login mi account via wifi.
then, i flashed this rom with miflash 2016 (mine is kenzo)
http://en.miui.com/thread-439892-1-1.html
and it works, i can unlock my phone without imei..

I think the "can not bind" problem is specific to Kate. The IMEI problem with your Kenzo phone is probably a separate issue.

Thanks for the reply but I need to have the latest dev ROM to allow LineageOS to flash - it checks for the most recent firmware.

Yes i know.first you use the older version miui to unlock the bootloader.after that just reflash to latest dev rom.make sure you checked CLEAN ALL.it will not lock your bootloader.

I thought of that but I couldn't get the phone to boot into recovery - Power and Vol+ opened a screen with a picture of the phone with a cable being plugged into it rather than recovery

Doesn't work - complains that the deivice isn't bound to the account
There is no point trying anything. Nothing works. I have a 3 month long email chain with xiaomi support, which ended by them saying I should contact the direct seller. Basically they washed their hands. I ended up sending my device to a guy, who has a xiaomi service licence, and he managed to unlock it officially with his code.
If you cannot bind your account and device for two weeks with multiple tries, you should just give up on the "mainstream" unlock procedure. It will never work, and the only thing that comes out of it is slowly bulding rage.
It's not worth it.

Hello all,
on Sunday I flashed LineageOS on my RN4.
Been using it till yesterday but I wanted to switch back to MIUI.
So I downloaded a Global developer recovery rom and wanted to flash it via TWRP.
I rebooted to recovery and immediately there was a prompt to type the password to decrypt the phone. Why is that?
Luckily, the password was my lockscreen PIN so I made it to get in recovery, but, why is that so and how to get rid of it?
And after that, I mean after I flashed MIUI, I rebooted to System and before my phone even booted, I had the same prompt window to type a password to decrypt the phone.
Any help here? I searched already and people said that I have to format my phone (including Data) and after that hopefully the prompt window won't be there anymore.
But I dont wanna format the whole phone, if there is any other solution.
thanks!

There's no solution unless you do a format via either twrp or using fastboot command.

Format via TWRP means format everything? I mean, Advanced Wipe -> and here check everything and format or?
You mean format everything via fastboot? If so, do I keep TWRP installed? And if so, which command is that?
Thanks!

Nah, if you've TWRP installed then no need for fastboot.
Steps to decrypt :-
*Boot to TWRP
*choose wipe
*Tap format data [you'll find this in the bottom right]
*type 'yes' to continue
*???!?
*Decrypted!
I repeat do not choose advanced wipe or whatever, choose FORMAT!

By the way, when you add pattern or password or any kinda screen locks, choose "No thanks" When its prompts to enter pin/password everytime you boot.
That's it.

No need to fastboot again, if you format data, you'll only lose your data not the TWRP.

Cool. You've been affected. Eh, I mean you need to decrypt your device now, solution would be formatting your data via TWRP. Note that you'll lose your all Data, so Make a backup before performing this. You can ask me, is there any way to decrypt without actually formatting data? No, nah. That's the one and only solution.

Hello there,
I had rooted my phone before the official TWRP came for POCO with the support to decrypt encryption. I used to flash DFE then which disabled the encryption on my phone. I use the Official TWRP now which support decrypting the phone. I want to enable encryption again for my POCO F1 to make the files inaccessible in case my phone is lost/stolen. How do I enable encryption on my phone without formatting the data?
Edit: I just ran getprop ro.crypto.state in shell and it says encrypted. I am confused. If my device is encrypted then why does not TWRP ask me for a password to decrypt my phone when I boot into recovery? Please help.
It is encrypted with the default android key right now, thats why you got that message.
To encrypt with your private key, go to Developer options and Encrypt device using lockscreen password(at the bottom). This is in MIUI 11

Sorry can't help you there. I'm running locked bootloader with 11.0.8.0. It worked perfectly here without losing data but I have no idea about unlocked bootloader.
I guess you can just make a full backup and give it a try. Best of luck, let me know how it goes!
REFLASH the desigred vendor image and reboot you will be encrypted on your next boot
usually data will not be deleted but its always best to take backup

Mi flash tool with "authorized account" (required for latest snapdragon devices) to flash in edl mode with option "lock" will relock the bootloader
Otherwise all other options available to flash in edl mode will not relock bootloader, as i know
