SD Card issues - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I have recently purchased a 64 gb SD card, and it doesn't seem to keep anything on it. I have put movies, photos and app, and they all just disappear. after some quick research I found out the problem may be with my android system. Its a S3mini so it runs on the older android, and apparently it does not allow me to put stuff on the card. Anything I can do so I can save stuff to the card? would rooting my phone or updating the android help? how would I do that properly without damaging my phone. Any help is appreciated

First you should check if your device supports 64gb SD cards, if it does then think about doing something about your operating system, and to update it go to Sammobile website and check to see if your phone has any further updates, if so then download firmware and odin and flash your device, more in depth instructions on flashing with odin can be found in the forum, just search for it, there are very helpful posts that have detailed instructions on how to do it, also if you want you can check for custom roms on xda for your phone and instructions on how to flash it can also be found by searching on the forum. Lastly, the problem you mentioned is either a hardware or software issue so rooting will not change anything. Hope I helped.

[Q] Cross reference to ROM posting

As we have ROM experts here I would appreciate it if they could look at this HTC stock ROM problem posted in the general forum for the HD2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11682793#post11682793
Many thanks.
it is timing out in the time taken for the phone to reboot.
put the phone into bootloader yourself first, then connect usb, wait for serial -> usb, right click your flash.exe file and 'run as administrator'. If it fails, dont touch the phone, swap USb ports and try again. avoid usb ports in teh front of the pc, or through hubs, and avoid 64bit windows.
Thanks for the replies folks. I used a different cable and all worked out well. I then started to install apps from my SD card using the SD card as the place to also install the apps which is what I had before.
I installed about 20 apps and all was well but now for some reason my device does not see the SD card!???
If I take out the SD card and put it into the PC I can see all the data. If I take a different SD card and put it into the HD2 it can't see this either.
I am wondering if one of the apps I installed has caused this issue. The only app I am aware of that did anything with the SD card was tnyynt SD TuneUP from this BBS.
I have had this installed before so I don't think it is this but I am otherwise stuck.
I may have to put the old rom back to see if that has something to do with it, I hope not as it has taken ages to get to this stage.
[Edit] Hi, I managed to solve the problem by removing the tnyynt SD TuneUP app. I have now deleted this app from my list. Others be warned.
Any help would be appreciated.

[Q] "Virginal" Newbie with fried brain

I have just recently (5 hours ago) purchased a 16GB Tablet, that I had them repartition at the store, which has version 1.4.2.
I've spent the last few hours reading this forum and watching videos and now know WAY more than I ever intended to know about this tablet.
Rooting, dual OP, CM7, CM9, ROM, R3, Restore, etc. etc.
Due to so many warnings I've read about, I'm a little afraid to mess things up.
All I really want to do is install games I already have on my computer to the NT.
There were a couple of threads talking about this, but they were dealing with version 1.4.1. Not 1.4.2. I don't know how much of a difference there is.
Can someone suggest the best way to install these games?
Thanks for all the info you guys provide. It was hours of very informative reading.
i'm pretty sure games need memory ( storage ) and lots of it. tell us how much of the microhcsd you have available. did they leave you with one or six and a half gig ?
Unless you have an android computer/tablet with games from the play store or some other android market, the "games" you are referring to are not as easily transferable to an android tablet like the nook. The games have to be rewritten/redesigned for the android OS.
As for many of the warnings you've read, they are mostly to protect the person writing the guide. I.e. if you somehow manage to not follow directions and screw something up horribly, they want not responsibility for your mistakes. Honestly, 90% of them time in my experience with Android tinkering, Occam's razor holds true: the simplest answer is usually the right answer. And in terms of Android tinkering, that answer is user error.
So if you can read and follow directions and do a bit of troubleshooting here and there, you will be just fine.
My advice? Start with a bootable CM7 sd card. Go from there.
My apologies for lack of info.
After repartition, I was left with 5.91GB for B&N, and 8.00GB Other storage, plus 16GB SD Card.
Regarding games. All the games I want to use are all apk android games that I had from another android product.

The Bootable CM7 SD Card will boot from the card and leave the Tablet's OS alone? Is that correct? I guess this is where I'm confused. I think I read too much.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Rooting your device is like removing the old OS and replacing it with a new one?
Booting from CM7 SD Card will boot from the cards OS leaving the original OS on the device?
On one of the video's I watched, it was said "DO NOT FLASH ON THE 16GB Nook". I don't even know what that means, but I'll look it up and see if I can find out.
Thanks so much for helping a newbie who still doesn't know the terminology. I'll concentrate on reading about booting from CM7 SD Card.
Alright I'll try to address most of your confusion.
The bootable SD card essentially means you will not touch the current internal OS. You basically burn an image of CM7 to the card and when that card is inserted, the Nook will boot into CM7 instead of the B&N Android OS.
Rooting does not necessarily mean changing the internal OS. Because the B&N OS is Android based, and because Android is linux based, "root" is sort of the equivalent of administrative access on a Windows machine. It simply means you have full control of the device. Rooting the nook means the OS stays intact, but you can install the play store (Android market) and do all sorts of other things you are otherwise locked out of.
"Flash" is simply a techy way of saying install. When someone says "flash CM7 over the internal OS" they mean that you are installing CM7 (the custom version of Android that has been built) over the internal OS.
The safest thing for you is to create the bootable SD card of CM7 as it does not touch the internal OS. However, you can also create a bootable sd card for the custom recovery. From this custom recovery, you could then "flash" (install) CM7, CM9, or one of the other roms (custom OS) for the Nook tablet. It is also in this custom recovery that you can make a "nandroid backup" which is basically images of how your nook exists in its present form.
I know thats a lot of info. But honestly, before diving into this stuff, people should try to understand as much of that as possible. There are tons of resources out there that explain this stuff. Again, I suggest the bootable CM7 sd card as its the least likely to screw up. However, remember that should you go after the internal stuff, this thing is incredibly difficult to brick. Any mistake you make has likely already been made before and recovered from. So if something goes awry, don't panic.
Thats a lot of words. Damn.
It may have been a lot of words, but you've answered all of my questions and then some. I thank you very much for taking the time. This information helps tremendously and also makes so much more sense of what I read already.
Thanks Again.
That post deserved a thank. Really good description.

We have started a very good community here, keep up people.
I should add one more thing.
Should you ever decide to go internal, i.e. flashing over the B&N OS, which IMO is the better way, its incredibly easy to return the device back to stock conditions should you ever need to (i.e. for warranty purposes or something).
I've done it myself just to make sure that its possible. And it is. Very easily.
I just wanted to come back and say Thank you!!
I was able to created the Bootable CM7 sd card and it went flawlessly.
I still have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm having fun looking around.
Thanks to this group of wonderful people, especially Cubanluke88m who still take the time to help even the virginal newbies who don't even know the lingo.
My hats off to this forum.
In the future I may in fact do this all internally, but I guess I needed to do it this way first just to see if I could. Now I feel much more comfortable with the files, burning images, etc. then before.
Congrats, enjoy.
The next thing I would recommend doing: make a clockwork mod recovery bootable card and make a nandroid backup of the internal OS.
ok, will do. I will search for those now.
I do have a couple questions that I have searched for but I think I'm using the wrong search terms and not the correct lingo.
When I partitioned the sd card there was a tutorial for opening the card so you could use the rest of the memory, but it was for Linux? I've tried to search how to do this on PC, but again the lingo problem.
Also I have books and apps that I'd like to copy over, but do I have to put them in a certain directory on the SD Card, or do I still have access to the units directory.
I know these are stupid questions, I just don't know the right words to search for. Sorry about that. I know I can search for the two things you told me to do and they will probably come up. lol
Thanks again for all your help.

It's fine, it's always better to ask first. Could save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Unlike lots of other users, you seem like you are willing to search and learn things which is always good!
You can regain the remainder of the storage after writing the CM7 .img to your SD card. To do this in Windows, you'll need to download and install either MiniTool Partition Wizard or EASEUS Partition Master. I usually use Partition Wizard.
Unfortunately, while using the CM7 SD ROM, you won't have access to your apps and books from the stock ROM, so you'll want to transfer them to your storage inside the SD ROM. So I recommend copying the files to your computer, then connect your NT running the SD ROM. From there just copy the files to your SD card.

Amaze Cannot Read SD Card

I bought a used Amaze and put a formatted SD card (FAT32) in it and it worked fine.
I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone (still s-on). It's running stock ICS ROM. (Not really needing to flash a custom ROM yet) The sd card was fine for a while.
Now, the Amaze cannot see the SD card. I reformatted it on my laptop again (FAT32) and it still cannot read it. However, in recovery (4EXT) it can read it. Also, my laptop can see the sd card.
I tested 2 other sd cards and the phone could not read those either and they all work on my other phone.
I took it to a repair shop since it seemed to be a hardware issue and they replaced the sd card slot and the phone still could not read the sd card.
The technicians said they have never seen anything like it. I can still use the phone without the sd card being functional but I'd like to have that working.
Any other suggestions?
Fixed the issue. Flashed Dark Glass One 0.2 ROM and the sd card and phone memory is now seen.

Hey tube, good looks on this issue. I'm having a similar problem with a Samsung Droid charge and just wanted to ask a couple questions.
- did you flash back to stock unrooted in between any of this?
- did the ROM have any other instability when you were on stock root?
- could either stock or custom recovery see the SD card when the OS couldnt?
Trying to draw some parallels between your and my situation, and wondering if I can learn anything. Thanks man!

"No External Storage Available"
Hi all,
First time poster here. I've done as much research as possible, tried multiple ROMs, tried ICS SD Binder, looked in multiple threads, and on multiple sites, but have yet to discover a resolution to my problem.
I'm on the HTC Amaze with TELUS being my provider. I have followed the steps to unlock/root the phone, and have tried CM10, Stock, and now using Dark Glass. The rom is working great, love it. The only problem is that I'm getting a message that says No External Storage Available when trying to use the camera. I find it strange that it won't recognize it since the music player works, and even a file manager such as ASTRO can locate the files on the SD card. I'm not even able to open the gallery as it can't find the SD card.
As noted above, I've tried a few different things, but still the problems persists. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Make sure your SD card is formatted to FAT 32. Do the long formatting not the quick one. Backup your SD card before formatting.

You better format it in your custom recovery though..
Thanks for the reply guys. Unfortunately that hasn't fixed the problem.
I've flashed the stock ROM back, and the card works as normal.
Even when the SD wasn't working with the old ROM, it would still be picked up in recovery.
Any other ideas.

[Q] NT 8GB rooting issue

Ok, first off I want to give a big thanks to digixmax for all his help so far! His quick responses have helped me to stay somewhat calm even though I am extremely frustrated right now. I have tried several different ways to root and boot CWM and CM 10.X onto my NT the last few days and nothing seems to be working. I have tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098419, http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013/01/09/cm10-1-android-4-2-1-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet-0110/, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 all with no success. i have used different cards, usb cables, and ports. i have used mini tool partition manager, acronis, gparted on ubuntu live, and fedora core that i have dual loaded on my laptop. i have downloaded the same files from different sources making sure to keep them separated in case one image is corrupt. and i have tried the preloaded image and built my own files onto a partitioned card making sure the card was set to FAT32 primary active 0x0C LBA and that boot was flagged. if anyone else has a suggestion i am all ears. im not opposed to just rooting into the eMMC either if someone wants to point me in the direction of a link with CM7.X or newer. the last build that i did on my sdcard looked like this (attachment below )
im not sure if anyone will be able to tell me if i did something wrong, maybe by file size? if more info is needed let me know. thanks in advance!
It's unclear to me what you want to do. Do you want to run CM10.x from sd card or install it internally? Or juts root? "Root" does not mea installing an alternative ROM, so it would be good to know what you're after.
If you want to run from sd Iamafanof's images should work. Personally I prefer his Android 4.1. Try it:
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/ (It was not among those you said you've tried)
If it's not working, come back with more info on what you actually do and what happens (or doesn't happen).
If trying to install internally that image from Iamafanof can be used as a bootable CWM sd card and you can install CM10.x from there.

i was trying to root and rom CMsomething. at this point i dont care how it happens so long as something happens. your right i havent tried booting CM 10 and was actually looking for the version you posted. i read it was a good ver of CM to run on the NT. something that just started happening this morning when i use win32diskimager as admin a box pops up saying File error an error occured while accessing the device. This usually means that something else is accessing the device, please close all applications and try again. Error 1. Incorrect function. not sure what this is about. anyways ill try CM10 from that link and let post back later. thanks!
Make sure any file explorer is closed. That's what usually prompts that error for me. (I insert my card adapter, and the file explorer tries to access it.)

ok that helped some. its now saying write successful again. i tried the first link you gave me for iamafanof and that didnt work either, it still booted straight to stock. i guess im going to try flashing it to the internal memory. i cant believe how much trouble this is giving me, ive never had near this much trouble rooting and flashing with any phone ive ever touched. with the phones i may have been down a day or two trying to find a solution but today is going on day 4 or 5 that i have been trying to do this. time to try an alt route i guess. quick q, if i were to try and downgrade firmware from 1.4.3 do you think that that would help? has anyone tried this?
Having it installed internally is so much more convenient!
But before you give up on booting from sd, have you tried turning the NT off, inserting the sd card, and then plug it in to the charger? That usually gets even troublesome devices to boot from sd.
Edit: Version of stock firmaware makes no difference at all.

ok thanks i was hoping it would make some kind of difference. i have tried booting the NT with the power button, with it off insert sd and then jump start it with my stock cable and other usb cables. i have tried different usb ports on my computer with the cables and still nothing. i have been reading for days and trying everything. ive looked on xda, tabletroms, as well as many other sites that have dev support for the NT and rooting. thats why its so frustrating. im done i think with trying to boot off of the sd card. just going to have to start researching doing it by internal memory. i dont really care either way if i keep the stock software i think i would just be happy with even an early version of froyo or eclair at this point lol. if anyone cares to post links on rooting and installing roms on the eMMC or has any other suggestions about booting from the sd im open for suggestions. thanks guys for your help so far.
You say you've tried different ports on the computer but I told you to connect it to the charger. And also, just to make sure, you do use a class 4 card? SanDisk seems to be the preferred brand.
And I've already posted a link to my instructions.
If you can't boot from SD card any modification will be difficult so you need to get that part sorted.
Edit: And I also take it you are absolutely sure you have a Tablet and not a Color? Model 250A. I ask because it's not uncommon people mix them up.

[Q] apps to sd card help needed

Right I'm new to android and am having a problem I just picked up a doogee 120 handset for very cheap so thought I'd give it a go the only issue I could see was it came with virtually no internal storage not a problem I'll just put a memory card in and use that, oh how wrong was i . not ever using android before I wasn't aware of the issue of apps going on the memory card after reading many threads I'm now confused people saying it can be done others saying it can but you must Root so can someone please give a definitive answer can I store my apps on my SD card. I read you can change the default install directory so they can be installed directly, also I read you can get apps to move them some of which you need to be rooted to use others rooting is not needed and someone else said you can partially move apps using folder mounting, so can someone please help as I'm stuck for how to try this, I should mention I'm in jellybean 4.2.2 and I have no problem in rooting my phone but again not sure how to I have jailbroken a 3gs and iPad 2 so rooting is fine if someone can point me to a guide. Thanks
