Has anyone gotten their hands on the US998 carrier unlocked device yet? Mine is scheduled to arrive this morning.
Hopefully LG will add this device to the unlocked bootloader list . I expect that it will take a few weeks :fingers-crossed:
In the mean time, I am hoping to find a way to enable my hotspot on the US998 without having the phone ask the carrier (I am grandfathered unlimited VZW). Has anyone found a way to achieve this?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: The native Hotspot function worked right out of the box and never asked Verizon for authorization.
EDIT: I had to RMA this device today due to a large "vertical line" down the middle of the screen. Too bad, I liked the phone.
Yes, some received on Saturday.
I received mine on Saturday, so far so good. This is my first carrier unlocked phone so it feels so clean without any bloatware, since I'm on AT&T and the visual voicemail app is not on this phone and can't be downloaded from play store, so I have to download it from other sites and it works fine. The wifi hotspot works out of the box using the tethering function on this phone. You'll love it.

A quick question: do you mean the visual voicemail app for AT&T or the Google Phone app apk that's floating around? I have three coworkers (one on AT&T and two on T-Mobile) that bought V30s from their carriers and since I'm a Nexus guy, it was disappointing to see visual voicemail separated out from the Phone app. In T-Mobile's case it even seems to be a paid app with a trial period, which is uncool to say the least. I will miss having visual voicemail baked right into the app, so I was hoping LG would add that to their phone app for the unlocked version but apparently not.

It's the AT&T visual voicemail app, I downloaded it from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/att-services-inc/att-visual-voicemail/ it works the same as the one on my other AT&T branded phones.

There may be a misconception here perhaps?
TMO's "Visual Voicemail" app and it's default feature allowing user to listen to their VMs is "FREE".
The "Voicemail to Text" feature within the free Visual Voicemail app is the "PAID" item subsequent to initial trial period of xx days.

Why is it called VISUAL voicemail then? The "visual" part is the reading, I would think.
OK, I know it's to see the list of voicemails and choose to listen to what you want.
But I'm so glad I have Google Voice, where I get all voicemails transcribed to text and email for free -- as are all other features.

Ah, good to know. I was misinformed by my coworker, or he was confused. I'm on T-Mobile too but haven't had a T-Mobile branded phone (and don't plan to) since I switched from Verizon.

I had forgotten about that feature of Google Voice (I almost exclusively use it for overseas calling), might be good to give it a try again as my voicemail handler once I get my hands on a V30+. So maybe March, haha.
OK, got mine tonight. Picked it up from the UPS store. B&H Photo charged me the $819.99 (the reduced rate). I couldn't remember if the price had changed yet when I ordered. Still need to call them and see if they'll price match Best Buy $799 (even though that's actually a higher price when you factor in tax).
Yes, still has the plastic screen protector on it.
I probably won't really get to mess with it until this weekend. Not set up yet, of course.
And then I need to buy a second one (LG V30+) by January 10.

I was wondering if it came with any additional adaptors? My T-Mobile one didn't. You'd think LG would include them since Samsung does.
Not that I need any, but the otg ones are good to have.
What do you all have as the stock message app?
Mine has android message and the stock LG message apk won't install.
Could one of you guys with an unlocked handset check what the FCCID is, under Settings > General > Regulatory & Safety?
I'm expecting V30A, ZNF-V30A or something along those lines, but something else would be interesting.

It means that its various electrical parameters are supposed to be identical (within a certain error margin, I'm sure) to the information filed for the other V30A; the US Cellular version. So it'll have the same official LTE bands and whatnot.
Essentially it's the same phone, the only likely difference is going to be that it's eligible for bootloader unlocking whereas US Cellular's isn't because .

1) very sure. The FCC ID is an important identifier even for handicap access devices. If one device has an identical FCC ID to another that means it's identical for all intents and purposes, with legal ramifications -- especially in the U.S. -- if it's not.
It's how we knew we could flash Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254 firmware over the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 and how we knew Verizon was lying through their teeth that the Droid Turbo was "exclusive"; it wasn't even exclusive in the U.S.
(They both had the same FCC ID and thus were EXACTLY the same device-- but the XT1250 had easily unlocked bootloader via code from Motorola. You could flash Verizon firmware over it and turn it into dev version of Droid Turbo.)
2) he said "official" bands, not bands we can enable ourselves.

We all know that the GN2 from Verizon has a ton of features disabled such as:
Blocked or added by Verizon:
- Permanently on Wifi Mode
- Bubble Notifications on Lock Screen
- Blocking Mode
- H+ network support (Yes this is truly a world phone if they wouldn't block it)
- Sim locked
- Locked Bootloader
- S Planner Widget (God I want to know why?)
- Can't continually scroll in Touchwiz but you get stopped on either side
- Tons of Bloatware
- Verizon Logo on Homebutton (Really not much of a problem just they were the only ones that did it)
- Multi-window was limited to 7 apps
- Photo Editor
Since I was in the mood to dig deeper and get answers I decided I would contact Verizon and see what they have to say to that. After getting nowhere with them I was told to contact Samsung since they were in charge of the whole affair.
For all your amusement I have included my email/chat conversation with Verizon and Samsung. It is awesome to see how they can write so much and say so little. Things that are written in BOLD ARE COMMENTS AND EXPLANATIONS
Lucas: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Visitor: I was directed here to you by Verizon Technical support because I had some questions regarding features that were disabled on the Galaxy Note II
Lucas: Please let me know how may I help you.
Lucas: I will certainly help you with the information available in live chat.
Visitor: Can I send you a copy of the email exchange that I send to Verizon and how they responded to me - I can copy and paste it in the chat
Lucas: Yes, you can copy and paste the chat in the live chat window. Unfortunately, live chat is not provided with the feature to send via attach files.
HERE I COPY AND PASTE THE EMAIL I SENT TO VERIZON
Visitor: To whom it may concern,
I recently acquired the Galaxy Note 2 and it is an amazing phone, however please tell me why Verizon has disabled the following features on the phone:
- Bubble Notifications on Lock Screen
- S Planner Widget disabled
- Can't continually scroll in Touchwiz but you get stopped on either side
- Photo Editor deleted I understand why Verizon is disabling certain features such as locking the Bootloader but why were the above mentioned implemented when all the other carriers have them and they don't cut into the profit margin of Verizon?
Thank you and I am looking forward for an answer! A call from someone who knows the answers to this question would be very much appreciated.
John
I OMITTED THE FULL LIST SINCE SOME OF THEM WERE OBVIOUS SINCE VERIZON WOULD LOOSE MONEY
Visitor: This is my letter that I sent to them - when you are ready I will send you their response to it.
Lucas: Please give me 2 minutes while I go thorough the issue.
Visitor: take your time. Once you have read this part I will copy and paste you the response I got from Verizon.
Lucas: Sure.
Visitor: let me know when you are ready for the response
Lucas: Please let me know the response form Verizon carrier team.
Visitor: Good morning John, I apologize for the delay in response to your email. We have been experiencing higher email volume than normal which is causing delayed responses. My name is Brittani and I definitely understand your frustration with some features that you like being disabled on your Galaxy Note 2. Wireless carriers work very closely with the device manufacturers on the products that come out. While we worked with Samsung to bring the Galaxy Note 2 to Verizon Wireless, we do not develop the software or disable features on device. That is all built into the software of the phone. A possible reason that you might see different features from carrier to carrier is that we may be operating with a different software version. I honestly recommend that you reach out to Samsung for answers as to why some things are locked down and others are not. This is not information that I have available. They would have more knowledge on the topic since they actually created the software. I apologize for the inconvenience. Have a great day! Sincerely, Brittani Verizon Wireless Customer Service
SO IN OTHER WORDS IT WAS SAMSUNG THAT DISABLED ALL OF THOSE FEATURES - HARD TO BELIEVE BUT OK I PLAY THEIR GAME AND CHAT WITH SAMSUNG
Lucas: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Visitor: take your time please
Lucas: I will be right with you.
Visitor: no problem take your time
Lucas: I understand that your concern about the missing features on Verizon Galaxy S 3, this is due to the fact that as the software changes after updating the phone depending upon the previous software performance Samsung will check with the device issues and delete the features that causes the issues and update the phone to new features. - SO IT WAS A SOFTWARE UPDATE? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING?
Visitor: No GALAXY NOTE 2
Lucas: I am sorry for the typo error, I am referring to Galaxy Note 2 device.
Lucas: In fact that update released by Samsung will check with the previous software version performance and release the update for the phones accordingly.
Lucas: This the reason the features has been deleted by the Samsung with the latest update.
Lucas: I can understand how important you feel the feature to use. However, as per recorded issues and complaints Samsung will look upon the issues and update the software to fix such issues. THIS GOT TO BE A JOKE RIGHT
Visitor: So you are telling me that the S-Planner widget which works on every major carrier and the international version of the phone but Verizon even after the latest software update to 4.1?
Lucas: Please let me know if you have any questions.
Visitor: see above question please
Lucas: Yes, I am reading your content. Unfortunately, yes. ANSWERS LIKE THIS TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY BECAUSE THEY ARE SO HARD TO BELIEVE
Lucas: As I said the Samsung look upon the complaints and major issues with the phone depending upon the carrier, Samsung will update the phones and get the issue fixed.
Lucas: We sincerely apologize for inconvenience that might have caused to you.
Visitor: Oh no worries I know how to deal with the issue and fix it my way. Thank you for your help THANK GOD FOR ROOTING AND XDA DEVELOPERS
Lucas: You're welcome.
Lucas: If you want to report the feedback you can reach our Samsung voice support team at 1-888-987-4357, Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST).
Lucas: As support team is our higher support, they will look upon the issue and provide you with the solution to isolate the issue.
After this exchange it took me a while to digest this information - they really did tell me that it was a software issue! Thank God I have rooted and flashed another rom but it still bugs me how this was handled.
Would love to hear everyone's comments!
Take care and thanks everyone.
Samsung uses different features for different markets and that is limited via CSC (this includes blocking mode, infinite scrolling, bubble notififications, etc.). Verizon does not code anything. Samsung does, and while they may have done it via Verizon's wishes, they still did it. SPlanner widget was probably broken. Multiwindow is a new feature that we have on 4.1.1, everyone else in the States had to get it on 4.1.2. We probably got an older iteration of it that needs a bit of work. Again, this is a software issue that can (and probably will) be addressed in the future. Blocking Mode has been shown time and again not to work on Verizon, at least not with JB (not sure if it was there in ICS). Therefore, it is blocked on the network via CSC and some changes in SecSettings.apk. Even if you enable it, it will not work.
I don't know why you tormented those folks. Both of who you talked to are not in a position to know anything past customer service scripts and basic account maintenance.
It sounds like they told you it can possibly be fixed in a software update and you weren't satisfied with the answer.
Unfortunately these level techs don't really have the information behind the decisions all they can really do is try to pacify the consumer and offer basic troubleshooting.
I honestly didn't even realize they had stripped out so much since I was running a custom ROM on my phone within 45 minutes of owning it.
Verizon, you daft bastards.
Also,
-The device isn't sim locked.
-If there is no H+ support (I know not), it is because the band isn't supported in the hardware.
-Photo Editor is a Note 1 feature, not Note 2. Not even International has it stock.
We all know that's all bull. Why would you disable all those Samsung features (that's one of the reasons why many people want to buy these devices in the first place). I'd say we should create a new phone company called Chupacabra Mobile where we won't have problems with all this crp. lol

The list is shorter than he listed and software defects aside, Samsung limits things by markets using CSC. They planned this a long time ago considering that these limitations are even in the International software.

Technically, no the Device is not sim locked but it doesn't allow you to add APN settings because Verizon wants you to pay 20 bucks per megabyte when you travel abroad. The hardware supports it - just look on Wikipedia. About the Photo Editor? From what I have seen it is on the Note 2 but I could be wrong on that one. I have it on my rom and if not it can be easily installed.

I have downloaded stock International roms...there is no photo editor in the Note 2 roms. So unless they are hiding it....
Besides, you can download it off the market.
The apn editor is blocked via CSC, and I already mentioned that Samsung does that for different markets. If H+ is supported by the hardware, you simply need to add the correct APN data.

It doesn't even require you to modify the code. Two lines in my build.prop is all it took. Verizon probably has a way to enable it as well without even doing that.
Have you actually called Verizon to see if they will unlock it for overseas travel? I am guessing not.
Since my phone is rooted and flashed I can't really call Verizon. I have it enabled now so I have the possibility to travel internationally and simple switching the Sim card. For your information: I have called them before I bought the phone and I was told that it is really not an international phone and therefore they won't/can't unlock it - but still advertise it as a world phone.

I don't know exactly, but best guess is Customer Software Customization. Basically, settings and changes specific to the carrier that are controlled via different change in prop files and XML files.
I'm guessing you can enable the APN editor on stock by putting the proper lines in /data/local.prop and restarting.

Maybe I am missing something...
The carrier chooses to carry the phone in their line up. Then they subsidize the cost for their customers.
If the carrier wants to modify it so they can make extra profit through the services they provide, I fail to see how that's wrong.
If the phone is being purchased outright then you have the choice to buy a factory unlocked from another source... it's usually even cheaper.
Do they make their cost back through contract alone? Sure, but they have a duty to their stock holders to churn a profit too. The more the better.
I guess my point is that I have a hard time comprehending why you would choose to grief employees over this. You can't honestly tell me that you expected policy clarification from two public companies via chat and email with first or second tier support.

There was an article on Engadget about how the Motorola Atrix came to be. If you can find that article I'm sure that you'll understand that what the VZW CSR told you was bull. Verizon tells the manufacturer exactly what they want.
Now the process will be different since the GN2 is not an exclusive phone to Verizon, however the principle is still the same. The carrier is in total control. They decide what features they want their phones to have and what features they don't want to have. Google wallet is a given since Verizon has their own NFC payment service.
As for other features, they probably wanted the phone dumbed down so that their CS department won't be bothered too much on how to use blah blah.
Some ignorant abonxious customers will always blame Verizon for anything wrong with their phone even if they didn't make it. After all, Verizon wants to keep their CS reports better than other carriers. And let's be honest with each other, the general population are ignorant to technology.
I'm against this practice by Verizon, however I understand why they do it.

I installed Samsung apps and then got photo editor there. I did notice that the note ii was not listed as a supported device when you had to select your device but I just selected the note and it installed fine and i use it all of the time. I guess I just assumed that Samsung was showing off their s pen and their own app (photo editor) in the lebron commercial and that other commercial (where it's some dude's birthday and everyone is forwarding pics they quickly edit with what looks like photo editor). I thought it was an app Verizon had dumped but now that you mention it, the note ii is not an option when you have to choose your type of device when installing from Samsung apps. I guess though it wouldn't be the first time they used an app or feature in an ad that they never ended up including on the phone.

It doesn't come unlocked since that is the T-Mobile model.

If you are buying it for 650, buy it straight TMo. Why do you want a used one.
If buying used, you can get it for around 500. BUT... if the person reports it as stolen later, or if he defaults on its payment (if not purchased in full like on contract), the carrier can blacklist it, and you won't be able to use the phone.
S5 has been notoriously famous in US for that latter given that all major carriers are now using an integrated database of blacklisted IMEIs.
Request to see the bill from the person you are buying phone.
For AT&T, you can have him come to AT&T store, n then take the phone to the person there and have a new SIM inserted (different SIM, but same number) and register the IMEI on your name. This way the owner cannot blacklist the IMEI after the IMEI is registered on your name.
I am not sure if this process is followed by TMobile too.

it has t-mobile logo on the box, but not on the phone
so basically if there is the Sim unlock code (with the phones IMEI), there is no problem?

This process does work with tmobile. Craig's list has some interesting deals. Here is a list of the question I ask.
Clean IMEI? If it's not the rest of the questions are irrelevant.
Has it been activated? Just because it's in the box doesn't mean it's New.
Balance due? This question can only be answered by the owner. So the person doing the deal with you had better be the owner. None of this, "I doing the deal for my girlfriend."
If he claims he's authorized by the owner to do the deal ask for the Pin on account. Without that you don't have a deal.
Bottom line If the account hasn't been activated you have a deal.
If it's been activated it's not new but if the balance is paid up you can still cut a deal... for a better price.
And for clean IMEI, check with TMo store, with the seller beside you. If he is genuine, he will come with you into the store.

I can't trust some dude on eBay or Craig's list. Especially on such purchases.

he says it's unlocked
my question is, if i factory reset, or install official ROM, it'll be locked again?
what about custom ROMs?
is there possibility of Bad IMEI?
and if there is, would it be solved by installing a custom ROM?

Tmobile says they don't sell unlocked Galaxy S5s. Which means if it's unlocked it's been opened.
Now T-mobile will unlock after 40 days.
Which raises the question, "If it's been unlocked what else was it used for?"
My questions would start with, "Are you the original owner and has this phone been activated.?"

Those are the questions I would ask your friend.
Edit: If the phone has been activated then you have to worry about account balance. And the second thing you need to check is the knox bit.

And if that person isn't the original owner, chances are, T-Mobile would not unlock it.

No, even though you are paying full price and the handset is not subsidized.. it will still be locked by default by TMobile. Yeah, it is great to be a oligopoly. If you ask nicely TMobile may unlock it right away for you, more likely they will try to make you wait a month or two before agreeing to do so. But there are plenty of third-party vendors that can and will unlock your S5 now for $15 - $30.
Once unlocked, the phone will normally remain that way permanently even after OTA upgrades or if you flash a different ROM. It is possible for a carrier to relock your phone, although I haven't heard of this happening to anyone. Phones are obstensibly locked at the outset to protect the carrier against subsidy fraud but carriers also like the barrier against you easily moving to a different carrier.
And if you are paying full price, you should buy directly from TMobile or have a trusted friend buy it from TMobile for you. Buying used adds considerable risk which you shouldn't take since you are paying full price. There are a lot of scammers that will buy a phone on contract, sell it.. and subsequently report it stolen (for the insurance) or default on the subsidized contract. Even if they paid full price in cash, without a contract, have a genuine receipt and the phone is not currently on an IMEI blacklist - it could end up there two weeks later if you are not the original purchaser and they report it stolen.

You can install a 900F based ROM if there is some reason you want to do that. But you will still have the 900T bootloader aka baseband.

FWIW, "aka" would not be a proper term to use. People will get confused xD Baseband and bootloader are two separate things. However, under your "about" you will see the baseband version which is the "modem" of the phone. It usually corresponds to which bootloader is on the device as well. Unless a different modem was flashed.

^ Another example of something that is usually but not always equivalent.
As you say, at a nuts and bolts, code level the bootlooder and baseband are not the same thing. But you are splitting hairs. In the context that I said that, they are not usually separated and are functionally equivalent.

Humm... I just tried flashing a G900F rom on G900T but the tmobile phone would not allow that? Am I missing something?
Apparently because lots of others have done it successfully.
However, you should start your own thread, rather than usurp an existing one. And provide a detailed description of what you did.

So after using an LG G5 VS987 for a few weeks I decided I wanted the RS988 for the unlocked bootloader so I can have full control of my phone. Upon receiving my phone today I took my SIM out of the VS987 and put it in the RS988. The phone started working on 4G within a few minutes and I was browsing the internet and downloading apps no problem. I tried a test call and it worked fine (albeit on LTE). I even video called a verizon S5 and video chatted without issue. The problem I am having is that the phone will NOT send or receive text messages. Could this be a problem with it not working right on 3G (CDMA) since I notice when I send texts sometimes my old phone would go to 3g for a second and this one just fails. The APN settings were blank on the RS988 so I changed them to VZWINTERNET like on the VS987 and the 4G stopped working alltogether I verified the phone is indeed an RS988 in the about phone>hardware menu so I am not sure why it isn't working. I did notice that this phone after factory resetting had a "Cellcom" background. Could that have anything to do with it? I need to return this phone anyway since the GPS will not get a lock even on raw GPS but can anyone verify their RS988 worked on Verizon for 3G? Thanks a bunch!

I also have the RS988 (from BHPhoto) and use it with Verizon for a few months, now on AT&T GoPhone, and didn't have any problem. Put my Samsung Note 4 SIM into the G5 RS988, verified the APN, and worked fine. You are on Software 10d, the newest is 11d, so should update to it and reset the phone.
If it still having problems, check with Verizon it the phone (IMEI) is setup correct on their end. They may want to send out a new SIM if still having a problem.
GPS locks on mine a lot quicker than on my old Note 4.
So it sounds like you may have a bad unit. Where did you buy it from?

Thanks for the reply. I bought it from an eBay vendor. When I check for system updates it says my device is up to date. I wonder if it is looking for a "Cellcom" approved update? I cannot figure out how to flash the new firmware myself. Everyone seems to use the LGUP tool but every link I found is from a third party site and not LG themselves

It looks like you may have been sold a phone that was used by CellComm at some point, so even though it is the RS988, it isn't the same "unlocked" RS988 that was sold by BHPhoto. I'd suggest returning it for a refund if you are able, and say that the item is defective and doesn't work as described.

Thanks again for the reply FAUguy. I have already requested the return and got the label so I am just going to reset it and send it back. The GPS issue was kind of a blessing in disguise because the camera lens on this Cellcom RS988 was kinda scratched too. Hopefully the cellcomm thing is also was why I couldn't send texts I will update this thread once I get my next RS988. Thanks!

At this point, I wouldn't see myself buying the G5 unless it was for half of what it cost me back in Nov ($450). Would either go with the G6/V20 or S8. The G5 is OK, but hardware wise it feels a bit dated, and still no Android 7 update for it. But the main thing I don't like is the display, colors are dull and lacking. Still prefer AMOLED at this point.

The removable battery is a requirement I have so it was either the G5 or the V20. The V20 was too big for me so I went G5. I am coming from a Galaxy S5 which has served me well. I am sad that they are getting away from removable batteries I felt the same way when they did away with keyboards (I loved my Droid 4). The VS987 I got for $190 shipped, the RS988 I got for $206 shipped, and the RS988 I just ordered was $220 but it looks to be in MUCH better shape than this GPS-dud was.

I can understand about the removable battery, and I actually have two LG OEM batteries and two Extended batteries I got from Amazon. But I've only had to swap it out during the course of a day only on one occasion.
The G5 on BHPhoto had gone down in price, very attractive offer. When I got it for $450 it included the Cam Plus attachment and the VR, both I only used once are pretty much useless. Coming from the Note 2/3/4, the G5 display was the biggest let-down for me. Also, I think my G4 took better pictures (in Auto) but o do love the Manual model and wide angle on the G5.
I personally am waiting on the Note 8 before I make any decisions on what to go with this year. I wasn't a fan of the the larger curves on the S7 Edge and Note 7, but they have lessened the curve angle this year. Also, an LED indicator on the front is a must, and the G6 doesn't have one.

Just to update, got the new RS988 and it is working great. I still cannot verify that 3G CDMA is working properly since whenever I enter the Phone information menu to change it to CDMA only like on my old S5 it says "This application does not work on this device" and closes :| I am able to send and receive texts now with the stock LG texting app. I will keep researching the apparent lockout of forcing 3G since it has saved my butt a few times out in the boonies where 4g wouldn't stay steady and it was failing to fall to 3g :/

Good that you got a working unit now If yours is a true RS988 (not a cellcom one), you can unlock it and root of as well now and hopefully soon will be able to use custom ROMs . Also, if you root your phone you can use an app to disable 4G too.

Thanks for the reply. So if root is installed you can access the "hidden" menu just fine? Have you done this? I really see no reason to root now considering the wifi hotspot works without an entitlement check but if I could switch to 3G only it would be worth it... I'd just hate to block myself from using Android Pay for a "maybe" you know Thanks again.

Well, doubt root would allow you to use the hidden menu (if it's locked out by lg, root wouldn't change that) to do it but it would allow you to use an app (like network monitor or a network switcher app) to control it. Also, as far as Android pay, it works with root as long as you are using magisk for root and not SuperSU. Only issue the rs988 may have for now is not being able to install a kernel that hides that the bootloader is unlocked (which Android pay detects), although that should hopefully happen given some time. Another possibility is going to an Los based ROM when one is released, which again will hopefully be soon. Maybe best bet is to just wait and see where development goes in next few weeks before rooting or anything the rs988 just recently got unlocked.
I am looking at the same issue. I have ordered an RS988 from a vendor on ebay to use on my existing Verizon account. I'm starting to get nervous. Will I have any issues? Is it better to contact Verizon prior to opening the phone. I currently have an iPhone 6, will the sim work or do I need a new one?
This is my first experience with an unlocked phone. I would like to be able to move it if I want to. But right now, where I live, Verizon is the only good choice.
Hello Striker1211 - A quick question for you (or anyone else on this forum) re: the LG G5 RS988 >> I am also looking to get this unlocked phone to use on Verizon soon.
I had planned to get it from B & H, because I'm being extra cautious considering all the problems you hear about the G5, and I figured A) They have a 30-day return/exchange policy, and B) I live in New York City, so I could return or exchange in person if the phone exhibits any problems.
B & H's price is $330 at the moment, and while I would like to save $100 and order from eBay as you have, I would worry about not having the 1-year warranty from LG , which I imagine is very useful should any problems arise after 30 days.
Am I being too careful in not ordering from eBay? It seems without the first month grace period to exchange, postage hassles, and either short or no LG warranty at all, physically walking into a store for purchasing peace-of-mind might be worth it? What do you all think?
P.S. Best Buy has the LG RS988 for $350, but with a 14-day return policy, plus re-stocking fee.

Personally, I'd recommend going through b&h. The 30 day return policy is nice and they also have cheap full coverage protection if you want and you also ensure you'll get the full 1 year warranty from LG as well. I've purchased from them before G2 and RS988 and had no issues with them including returning the RS988 to get the h830. If stay away from eBay if you're worried about warranty or return periods. Also not a fan of best buy hitting you with a restocking fee.
Thanks jeffsga88 for the advice - I figured B&H was probably the better deal, but it's nice to have another person confirm it!
I was on T-Mobile for years but I could save a lot if I became the 4th phone on a shared unlimited plan on AT&T. So I bought a US998 and I brought it to AT&T to add a line on a bring my own device offer. They have an optional $4/month service which is essentially greatly extended caller ID and it identifies "likely scams" among other things like mobile user caller ID and identifies a lot of things that regular caller ID doesn’t. I had it on T-Mo until earlier today. It, however, requires that the phone be accepted for "HD Voice" which the V30 is but not on AT&T if the IMEI isn’t on "their" list of their phones. It isn’t a matter of the phone having the US998 firmware but that the IMEI doesn’t match. If I understand things correctly, and I don’t know that I do, then even if I bought an H931 from an eBay seller, I'd be unable to activate it with full functionality.
If I'm wrong, then I could return the US998 and buy an H931 and flash it to a us998 and give up some memory (the US998 is a V30+) and some cheap headphones and get the missing features. Or I could go back to T-Mo and spend another $30 a month. Or I could give up the caller ID, Wi-Fi calling, HD voice and a few lesser features.
I found an email form an AT&T rep, back in 2016, saying that they were working on adding all features for users of phones brought to AT&T and that they were working on it. I don’t remember if they implied it was at great urgency. When I was at the store, the people there spent over a half hour trying to activate the service and they couldn’t figure it out. Of course, they merely tried the same failing things over and over and never tried other things like maybe calling AT&T support, or looking it up or even asking people who might have known. When I called and got as supervisor, I was told it didn’t work because it was the policy of AT&T to not offer the services on BYOD phones.
Anyone know anything here? I'd prefer info trhat;'d help me get my6 phone on AT&T wiht the features but I'd settle for knowing tghat it';s not goping to work.

No, you don't quite understand correctly. They are pressing you to have an AT&T-branded phone, not specifically a phone they personally sell to you. You could buy an H931 off eBay and it would have the IMEI they SAY they are looking for.
Having said that you admit they didn't call AT&T tech support. I would call AT&T tech support myself or go to another AT&T store. If they still say no, then buy an H931 off eBay...
Also, what happens when you flash the H931 TWRP-flashable zip to your US998? That doesn't allow the AT&T features?
from, what I understand, it comes down to provisioning and they describe the process as one with no discretionary range at all. The only issue is whether the IMEI is in the list that can be so provisioned. Whether it is owning a H931 or a phone of their supply is unknown but they do insist it is the latter. I compare it to the issues some people report trying to unlock a phone they say is paid for and others say it is not. The idea being that there is a somewhat fluid master list somewhere and they are saying there is a list of H931s meant for sale by AT&T agents.
I don't believe it either but it appears to be a road block.
So now do I try to return the US998 because I had activation issues with it? On a fairness level, it's not the fault of the eBay reseller who sold me the phone he said he would, and by all accounts, in good working order.
So what would you do, if you accepted my position that I need these features that seem to require an IMEI that AT&T is willing to provision with HD Voice, and the resulting capabilities which only follow on a phone provisioned for HD Voice so I could subscribe for the $4/.month caller ID service. I’d hate to pay another $300 to buy a H931 to find that the problem still exists or that I now have 2 phones when I need one.

I'm going to leave that decision to you.
My sister and brother-in-law both have LS998 V30+ (off eBay) converted to US998 V30+ and they're both on post paid AT&T. He's a successful tech salesperson and they live in a million dollar house.
Another friend of mine (very tech oriented) has postpaid AT&T on native US998 V30 (B&H Photo) and works for a world wide news organization.
I don't know whether they have HD Voice, WiFi calling on their US998 -- but they have never complained about not having it...
They all got this phone on my recommendation, and are using it on postpaid AT&T.
____
My wife and I, my mother and two other friends have either native or converted US998 on Prepaid AT&T. I do not have those features, but I like having the lower price of AT&T Prepaid with the speed of postpaid AT&T included vs the lag of AT&T MVNOs.
____
But you know your needs better than me. I would just try with another store or AT&T technical support before giving up. If you do return the US998 you can bootloader unlock and root H931. I would activate first to get everything done, before following the WTF instructions.
Sent via open market LG US998 V30/V30+
I just spoke to a so-called supervisor who tells me that the issue is one of supported devices on the BYOD plan. they say that while the H931 as sold by AT&T is a supported device, an h931 not sold by AT&T is somehow fundamentally different and it appears to them as having a different "image" (a term not explained or otherwise defined) and so there is no way that a non AT&T H931 will ever appear on their system, as one of theirs. As not one theirs, they refuse the range of services that include "HD Voice, Wi-Fi calling and enhanced caller ID and a security feature that I don’t know the name of.
They insist that this "image" issue is really true and that anyone with an AT&T supplied H931 and a non-AT&T H931 appear as different devices on their system.
They proposed creating an escalation ticket so that the "back office department" can look to see if there is anything that they can do. They say as things are currently set up there is no option anywhere to authorize a non-AT&T phone but maybe the back-office folks can do it, I’m promised a callback in 24 hours and he is improbably making positive sounding noises. As so much of this makes no sense, I don’t expect qi positive result, but I will give them 24 hours
I'm not casting aspersions on any user of AT&T's postpaid or pre-paid system but I can say that I ne3edc Wi-Fi calling for reception where I work and I want the caller IDF service and have come to want it in the 4 years I’ve been on T-Mobile who offers the same product.
Please don’t think that I'm critiquing anyone who is using any carrier's system to their satisfaction. I'm just saying that I would be significantly troubled by not having Wi-Fi calling as I live and work in areas where there is no calling except once inside buildings and connected to their Wi-Fi LAN. And for whatever reason, I'm being excluded on grounds that seem suspicions.

I've just about decided to go back to T-Mo and I need a rom that wont lose root an dwill enable B71 and would like the latest, stockest thing that has been at least partly debloated. Is there any such thing? Is there info for loadng the lastest H932 rom on a US998?

This T-Mobile ROM port for US998 won't give you LTE band 71, but probably everything else:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/rom-lg-v30-t-mobile-stock-rom-20s-t3925486
is there any way to get band 71, and wifi calling on a us998?
I just went to a t-mo store with the us998 rom and put a t-mo sim in it and the hd voice calling worked fine although I didn't try Wi-Fi calling yet. But where I live I think b71 would make a huge difference. In any case I want a chance to find out if this is true. This is probably the main reason I bought the V30: my V20 doesn’t even have B71 and I have no reception in way too many places where t-mo says there is coverage. They also imply that most new build out is with b71, and they further imply that all else equal, ,b71 works better as if it's just magic. It seems at last worth checking out if there's a chance. I see some roms change the modems and some do not. Is it likely that that roms that don’t change the modem will not change the lack of b71 so I'd need a rom that includes an h932 modem to even have a chance of b71 working?
Thanks agian for all yuor help.

If you read that article, do you see who he quoted in that article and what thread he linked to? . Someone named ChazzMatt. Go read the thread he links to, please. I started that thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/t-mobile-600-mhz-lte-band-71-s-carrier-t3671351
That was also in September 2017 before the OFFICIAL carrier unlocked (Open Market) US998 V30/V30+ was released. We were hoping the upcoming "official" carrier unlocked US998 (sold by authorized 3rd party retailers like B&H Photo) would ALSO have the new U.S. T-Mobile LTE band 71 -- and one part of T-Mobile SEEMED to be hinting it would... That you could buy EITHER H932 OR the "official" carrier unlocked US998 and have all the T-Mobile bands. These official carrier unlocked phones are called "Open Market" phones by LG; these are the phones that LG usually lists in their LG Bootloader Unlock code eligible list.
Thus the thread I started, and subsequent XDA NEWS article. That turned out to NOT be true. The tweets we misleading.
Even so, we also hoped with root on the "Open Market" US998 we could activate the hidden T-Mobile network menus we could clearly see. THAT is also discussed in the thread.
Yet in all the time since then, no one has had any luck getting T-Mobile LTE band 71 working on any phone except U.S. T-Mobile H932.
@runningnak3d, the dev who ROOTED the T-Mobile H932 currently uses a US998 on T-Mobile. If anyone could get LTE band 71 on T-Mobile with US998, it would be him. . He hasn't, and he says LTE band 71 is not that important for him.
______
We also found out the the only difference between the "Open Market" official carrier unlocked US998 V30 (64GB) sold by B&H Photo and the US998 V30 (64 GB) sold by U.S. Cellular is the B&H Photo V30 was secretly eligible for LG bootloader unlock code. One of my V30 used official LG bootloader unlock code, but we had to hack the LG dropdown menu on the LG Dev website to enter the information. LG has NEVER officially announced the Open Market US998 V30 is eligible for bootloader unlock code. That trick/hack does NOT work for the Open Market US998 V30+. So, only one of my phones was bootloader unlocked using that method.
However there was NO DIFFERENCE between the various US998 V30+ (128GB) sold by the any entities. NO US998 V30+ is eligible for LG bootloader unlock code, and ALL US998 V30/V30+ are actually carrier unlocked -- even those sold by U.S. Cellular.
LG was not forthcoming with any of this information. We had to figure it out by ourselves, through trial and error.
With WTF exploit, we are not dependent on LG for bootloader unlock code. But that developments did not happen until May 2018. My US998 V30+ was not bootloader unlocked and rooted until then.

Of course I know it was you. that's why I'm asking you follow up questions.
I'm seeing comments along two theories and I dont i know which is more likely true. Theory one is that the 835 chips come in two types, ones that have band 71 capabilities and those tht dont, or the other theory which is that there are software modems thaat compensate for the lack of included band 71 modems, and where a certain software modem could add the capbility. In effect, some say that the US998 can never get band 71 and others say for example, that if you knew what you were doing wiht the Shortcut Master you could add the band, or alternatively, you could flash the correct rom or modem.
And so I start doing my homework and sure enough, you show up as one of the few that know anything about it.
I have no idea but I keep being told that things arent going to go the way I want them to. I'm hoping that I can get band 71 using this phone because I just bought this phone and I need or think I need band 71. It is why I bougnt this phone.
How do things look for me getting band 71? My clever plan to go to AT&T failed rather dramatically by my standards, even if you think I should be fine without the functions that so many people don't care about. Out in the boonies, T-Mpo is putting most of their efforts into band 71 and I spent a lot of time driving where there is no reception and I'm told there'd be a lot more if I could get that band. that's mainly why I bought the new phone as the V20 still works about the same, not getting band 71 every day.
I'm trying to learn about this phone after 2+ years with the H918 but I'll never pick up what you know any time soon, so I'm asking you.

Bob, if you knew I wrote it and had already read the thread -- then why did you bring it up? If you read the thread you know it's not possible, as far as we know. I spent a lot of time trying to explain all that in my post and you already knew it. I didn't know how up to speed you were. If you had said, "I read this article, I read the whole thread, is there anything new, yes or no?" I would have simply said no, nothing new. Move on.
You are making my head hurt.
Here are your choices:
Go buy a new AT&T H931 from AT&T.
Go buy a mint AT&T H931 off Swappa you KNOW was bought from AT&T. Swappa instead of eBay this time because they check IMEI, etc before letting it be sold. Having been bought from AT&T rather than leftover stock from some warehouse, it SHOULD be in the AT&T system as eligible for all the stuff you want. If you are uncertain, then go buy straight from AT&T.
Go buy a T-mobile H931 if you want to stay with T-mobile and get LTE band 71.
no, I didnt understand and now I do
thanks. i thought it was supposed to be possible.
so my best bet is to get a 931 so I can pay less.

I can go to your page at https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/us998-lg-v30-market-us998-t3736910

This question is for anyone who has a pixel 6, or really any new pixel (5, 5a, 4a) on At&T or Firstnet (same policies).
Does ATT's Sim unlock also enable Bootloader unlock. (Ungrey the setting in dev options and allow root).
Trying to confirm what this user said: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/at-t-pixel-5-is-carrier-locked.4195785/post-84100651
For anyone who says "Just buy a Google one", I can't. I'm a first responder and need a full firstnet capable device. I also don't have $900 to spend on a pixel 6 pro, especially when FirstNet is discounting the mmwave + sub 6 pixel 6 $200 for first responders.
THIS IS FOR TMOBILE but is prob similar on ATT -- i have owned several tmobile oneplus devices, as well as countless other tmobile devices. can't help but trade in my old junk, you know? anyway, if you are getting your phone on EIP, then you will need to stay on the network for 40 days before you can ask tmobile to SIM unlock your phone. and they will do it. no questions. just make sure that phone is activated on the tmo network for 40 days. this is for SIM unlock.
alternatively, you can pay the phone off in full. then tmobile will SIM unlock it for your sooner. again, this is SIM unlock.
alternatively (#2), there's a guy on XDA who does this for Tmobile. he requires 3 days of active service. there may be someone similar for ATT.
once you are SIM unlocked, the OEM UNLOCKING toggle becomes active. at that point you can turn it on.
from there, its a matter of using fastboot commands to unlock the bootloader. or whatever other methods are necessary on a pixel phone. i've owned oneplus phones for the last 8 years so this will all be new to me when i get my pixel 6 in a couple days.

Did you have to fill out their online web form , or put in the new sim for it to ungrey out ? How long did it take to allow you to change the setting?
Also thanks for answering. This is good news.
Interesting. Does anyone know if you have to have an AT&T account to purchase an AT&T phone at full retail price (ie: without buying it on a plan and then paying it off)?
I wonder if it would be possible to purchase an AT&T Pixel 6 outright so it's unlocked, unlock the bootloader, and use it on Verizon (with full Sub-6 and mmWave support).

It looks like you would have to have an account and choose a plan, but you could cancel it immediately if you bought the phone at full price. At worst you would have to pay $30 for activation, but hopefully not.

Seems doable.
I wonder if the VZ and/or AT&T variant of the firmware is needed for mmWave to function correctly or if the "global," non carrier-specific firmware still includes drivers for mmWave (even though the global variant of the phone lacks a mmWave modem).
Probably a stretch, but I figure it's worth asking: You wouldn't happen to have access to and/or know somebody that has a 5G Verizon phone with a 5G sim you could test it with, do you? Even better would be in an area with known-working 5G mmWave.

Good question. I had assumed the mmWave capability was hardware-dependent. Honestly I'm not sure.
