RS988 on Verizon? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

So after using an LG G5 VS987 for a few weeks I decided I wanted the RS988 for the unlocked bootloader so I can have full control of my phone. Upon receiving my phone today I took my SIM out of the VS987 and put it in the RS988. The phone started working on 4G within a few minutes and I was browsing the internet and downloading apps no problem. I tried a test call and it worked fine (albeit on LTE). I even video called a verizon S5 and video chatted without issue. The problem I am having is that the phone will NOT send or receive text messages. Could this be a problem with it not working right on 3G (CDMA) since I notice when I send texts sometimes my old phone would go to 3g for a second and this one just fails. The APN settings were blank on the RS988 so I changed them to VZWINTERNET like on the VS987 and the 4G stopped working alltogether I verified the phone is indeed an RS988 in the about phone>hardware menu so I am not sure why it isn't working. I did notice that this phone after factory resetting had a "Cellcom" background. Could that have anything to do with it? I need to return this phone anyway since the GPS will not get a lock even on raw GPS but can anyone verify their RS988 worked on Verizon for 3G? Thanks a bunch!

I also have the RS988 (from BHPhoto) and use it with Verizon for a few months, now on AT&T GoPhone, and didn't have any problem. Put my Samsung Note 4 SIM into the G5 RS988, verified the APN, and worked fine. You are on Software 10d, the newest is 11d, so should update to it and reset the phone.
If it still having problems, check with Verizon it the phone (IMEI) is setup correct on their end. They may want to send out a new SIM if still having a problem.
GPS locks on mine a lot quicker than on my old Note 4.
So it sounds like you may have a bad unit. Where did you buy it from?

Thanks for the reply. I bought it from an eBay vendor. When I check for system updates it says my device is up to date. I wonder if it is looking for a "Cellcom" approved update? I cannot figure out how to flash the new firmware myself. Everyone seems to use the LGUP tool but every link I found is from a third party site and not LG themselves

It looks like you may have been sold a phone that was used by CellComm at some point, so even though it is the RS988, it isn't the same "unlocked" RS988 that was sold by BHPhoto. I'd suggest returning it for a refund if you are able, and say that the item is defective and doesn't work as described.

Thanks again for the reply FAUguy. I have already requested the return and got the label so I am just going to reset it and send it back. The GPS issue was kind of a blessing in disguise because the camera lens on this Cellcom RS988 was kinda scratched too. Hopefully the cellcomm thing is also was why I couldn't send texts I will update this thread once I get my next RS988. Thanks!

At this point, I wouldn't see myself buying the G5 unless it was for half of what it cost me back in Nov ($450). Would either go with the G6/V20 or S8. The G5 is OK, but hardware wise it feels a bit dated, and still no Android 7 update for it. But the main thing I don't like is the display, colors are dull and lacking. Still prefer AMOLED at this point.

The removable battery is a requirement I have so it was either the G5 or the V20. The V20 was too big for me so I went G5. I am coming from a Galaxy S5 which has served me well. I am sad that they are getting away from removable batteries I felt the same way when they did away with keyboards (I loved my Droid 4). The VS987 I got for $190 shipped, the RS988 I got for $206 shipped, and the RS988 I just ordered was $220 but it looks to be in MUCH better shape than this GPS-dud was.

I can understand about the removable battery, and I actually have two LG OEM batteries and two Extended batteries I got from Amazon. But I've only had to swap it out during the course of a day only on one occasion.
The G5 on BHPhoto had gone down in price, very attractive offer. When I got it for $450 it included the Cam Plus attachment and the VR, both I only used once are pretty much useless. Coming from the Note 2/3/4, the G5 display was the biggest let-down for me. Also, I think my G4 took better pictures (in Auto) but o do love the Manual model and wide angle on the G5.
I personally am waiting on the Note 8 before I make any decisions on what to go with this year. I wasn't a fan of the the larger curves on the S7 Edge and Note 7, but they have lessened the curve angle this year. Also, an LED indicator on the front is a must, and the G6 doesn't have one.

Just to update, got the new RS988 and it is working great. I still cannot verify that 3G CDMA is working properly since whenever I enter the Phone information menu to change it to CDMA only like on my old S5 it says "This application does not work on this device" and closes :| I am able to send and receive texts now with the stock LG texting app. I will keep researching the apparent lockout of forcing 3G since it has saved my butt a few times out in the boonies where 4g wouldn't stay steady and it was failing to fall to 3g :/

Good that you got a working unit now If yours is a true RS988 (not a cellcom one), you can unlock it and root of as well now and hopefully soon will be able to use custom ROMs . Also, if you root your phone you can use an app to disable 4G too.

Thanks for the reply. So if root is installed you can access the "hidden" menu just fine? Have you done this? I really see no reason to root now considering the wifi hotspot works without an entitlement check but if I could switch to 3G only it would be worth it... I'd just hate to block myself from using Android Pay for a "maybe" you know Thanks again.

Well, doubt root would allow you to use the hidden menu (if it's locked out by lg, root wouldn't change that) to do it but it would allow you to use an app (like network monitor or a network switcher app) to control it. Also, as far as Android pay, it works with root as long as you are using magisk for root and not SuperSU. Only issue the rs988 may have for now is not being able to install a kernel that hides that the bootloader is unlocked (which Android pay detects), although that should hopefully happen given some time. Another possibility is going to an Los based ROM when one is released, which again will hopefully be soon. Maybe best bet is to just wait and see where development goes in next few weeks before rooting or anything the rs988 just recently got unlocked.

I am looking at the same issue. I have ordered an RS988 from a vendor on ebay to use on my existing Verizon account. I'm starting to get nervous. Will I have any issues? Is it better to contact Verizon prior to opening the phone. I currently have an iPhone 6, will the sim work or do I need a new one?
This is my first experience with an unlocked phone. I would like to be able to move it if I want to. But right now, where I live, Verizon is the only good choice.

Hello Striker1211 - A quick question for you (or anyone else on this forum) re: the LG G5 RS988 >> I am also looking to get this unlocked phone to use on Verizon soon.
I had planned to get it from B & H, because I'm being extra cautious considering all the problems you hear about the G5, and I figured A) They have a 30-day return/exchange policy, and B) I live in New York City, so I could return or exchange in person if the phone exhibits any problems.
B & H's price is $330 at the moment, and while I would like to save $100 and order from eBay as you have, I would worry about not having the 1-year warranty from LG , which I imagine is very useful should any problems arise after 30 days.
Am I being too careful in not ordering from eBay? It seems without the first month grace period to exchange, postage hassles, and either short or no LG warranty at all, physically walking into a store for purchasing peace-of-mind might be worth it? What do you all think?
P.S. Best Buy has the LG RS988 for $350, but with a 14-day return policy, plus re-stocking fee.

Personally, I'd recommend going through b&h. The 30 day return policy is nice and they also have cheap full coverage protection if you want and you also ensure you'll get the full 1 year warranty from LG as well. I've purchased from them before G2 and RS988 and had no issues with them including returning the RS988 to get the h830. If stay away from eBay if you're worried about warranty or return periods. Also not a fan of best buy hitting you with a restocking fee.

Thanks jeffsga88 for the advice - I figured B&H was probably the better deal, but it's nice to have another person confirm it!

Update Problem

Hello All!
I am fairly new to the site, and not too tech savvy, but I'm having some problems with my Verizon LG V10 I bought about 3 months ago.
I bought the unit from eBay for 300 dollars in new condition (a steal if you ask me), and it's been working great, but I have been having issues updating my phone.
I am aware that Marshmallow is out for the V10 on Verizon, yet whenever I click on check for updates, it always says no upgrade is available.
As most of you probably know, Verizon phones are unlocked, and I am using an H20 sim card, putting the phone in international mode. My question is that I'm wondering if that is the problem, or is there something else?
Thanks for your help
I thought all the V10's shipped with Marshmallow.

They actually don't.
I bought this one off of ebay, and it came with 5.1.1
I even tried the Verizon Software Updater, and thought I had it, only to find out that nothing changed, I really want to get a hold of the battery life optimization in Marshmallow
You won't get Verizon updates on another network or outside North America.
Download the kdz and upgrade it yourself
please provide kdz file working link, nowhere i can find it.

Received US998 Unlocked from BH PHOTO

Has anyone gotten their hands on the US998 carrier unlocked device yet? Mine is scheduled to arrive this morning.
Hopefully LG will add this device to the unlocked bootloader list . I expect that it will take a few weeks :fingers-crossed:
In the mean time, I am hoping to find a way to enable my hotspot on the US998 without having the phone ask the carrier (I am grandfathered unlimited VZW). Has anyone found a way to achieve this?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: The native Hotspot function worked right out of the box and never asked Verizon for authorization.
EDIT: I had to RMA this device today due to a large "vertical line" down the middle of the screen. Too bad, I liked the phone.
Yes, some received on Saturday.
I received mine on Saturday, so far so good. This is my first carrier unlocked phone so it feels so clean without any bloatware, since I'm on AT&T and the visual voicemail app is not on this phone and can't be downloaded from play store, so I have to download it from other sites and it works fine. The wifi hotspot works out of the box using the tethering function on this phone. You'll love it.

A quick question: do you mean the visual voicemail app for AT&T or the Google Phone app apk that's floating around? I have three coworkers (one on AT&T and two on T-Mobile) that bought V30s from their carriers and since I'm a Nexus guy, it was disappointing to see visual voicemail separated out from the Phone app. In T-Mobile's case it even seems to be a paid app with a trial period, which is uncool to say the least. I will miss having visual voicemail baked right into the app, so I was hoping LG would add that to their phone app for the unlocked version but apparently not.

It's the AT&T visual voicemail app, I downloaded it from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/att-services-inc/att-visual-voicemail/ it works the same as the one on my other AT&T branded phones.

There may be a misconception here perhaps?
TMO's "Visual Voicemail" app and it's default feature allowing user to listen to their VMs is "FREE".
The "Voicemail to Text" feature within the free Visual Voicemail app is the "PAID" item subsequent to initial trial period of xx days.

Why is it called VISUAL voicemail then? The "visual" part is the reading, I would think.
OK, I know it's to see the list of voicemails and choose to listen to what you want.
But I'm so glad I have Google Voice, where I get all voicemails transcribed to text and email for free -- as are all other features.

Ah, good to know. I was misinformed by my coworker, or he was confused. I'm on T-Mobile too but haven't had a T-Mobile branded phone (and don't plan to) since I switched from Verizon.

I had forgotten about that feature of Google Voice (I almost exclusively use it for overseas calling), might be good to give it a try again as my voicemail handler once I get my hands on a V30+. So maybe March, haha.
OK, got mine tonight. Picked it up from the UPS store. B&H Photo charged me the $819.99 (the reduced rate). I couldn't remember if the price had changed yet when I ordered. Still need to call them and see if they'll price match Best Buy $799 (even though that's actually a higher price when you factor in tax).
Yes, still has the plastic screen protector on it.
I probably won't really get to mess with it until this weekend. Not set up yet, of course.
And then I need to buy a second one (LG V30+) by January 10.

Could one of you guys with an unlocked handset check what the FCCID is, under Settings > General > Regulatory & Safety?
I'm expecting V30A, ZNF-V30A or something along those lines, but something else would be interesting.

It means that its various electrical parameters are supposed to be identical (within a certain error margin, I'm sure) to the information filed for the other V30A; the US Cellular version. So it'll have the same official LTE bands and whatnot.
Essentially it's the same phone, the only likely difference is going to be that it's eligible for bootloader unlocking whereas US Cellular's isn't because .

1) very sure. The FCC ID is an important identifier even for handicap access devices. If one device has an identical FCC ID to another that means it's identical for all intents and purposes, with legal ramifications -- especially in the U.S. -- if it's not.
It's how we knew we could flash Verizon Droid Turbo XT1254 firmware over the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 and how we knew Verizon was lying through their teeth that the Droid Turbo was "exclusive"; it wasn't even exclusive in the U.S.
(They both had the same FCC ID and thus were EXACTLY the same device-- but the XT1250 had easily unlocked bootloader via code from Motorola. You could flash Verizon firmware over it and turn it into dev version of Droid Turbo.)
2) he said "official" bands, not bands we can enable ourselves.

Few questions before buying

My LG G2 just died and I'm looking for a replacement. LG V30 (EU version) looks pretty good, but I have a few questions.
Just like with my G2 I would have to get rid of LG software and flash lineage but that means no lg "features" and here lies the question.
Is there anything gamechanging I would lose?
From what I've read the quad DAC doesn't work but I dont have any audiophile grade headphones so regular snapdragon DAC should get the job done just fine, but what about the camera.
The main reason I'm looking into this phone is the camera, waterproofing and heaphone jack (S8 has also these features but lineage is broken on that thing and I won't touch touchwiz).
So how is the camera on non stock roms? Do I still have acces to the wide angle one and other goodies?
If there is anything else I'm missing please let me know.
You can install both GCam builds one for the main camera and one for the wide angle camera, so you have 2 different apps for each back camera.
As for the quad dac - you can use it:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77389334&postcount=15
Onkyo HF Player
USB Audio Player PRO
both are able to utilize the quad dac,
with the 2nd you can even use it with streaming

not entirely sure about qnovo but it's an in-kernel driver so it also seems to be used on ROMs different from LG's Stock ROM

Thanks. I'm pleasently surprised by that DAC. Thought I would have to give that up for sure.
2 apps for camera is annoying but as long as it takes good photos it doesn't really matter. Is the camera still good on aosp roms?
I know people usually praise Gcam and from reviews this phone has good camera but I figured I might as well ask.
Anything else I should know? I know the speaker is not the best but after the G2 speaker anything is going to be great

Some LS998 V30+questions
Stormwing said:
I've been looking for a modern, rootable, and bootloader unlockable replacement for my rather aged phone (Sony Xperia Z3v) and after realizing the S8 is horribly locked down my search has led me to your extensive body of experience and research involving the LS998 V30+, to a point where I'm pretty sure it's the one. But because I've fallen off the development wagon for so long I hope you won't mind if I ask you a couple things since you are the resident expert:
Given it's a Sprint device, the LS998 should be fine on Verizon, correct? And should be okay overseas as well?
I haven't really ROM'd since the Gingerbread/ICS days on my old Droids, will this be able to offer a similarly open experience?
Is the $315 eBay one a reliable buy? No issues with the screen (burn in, graying) or condition?
eBay's running one of their sitewide 15% off sales today (PREGAME15) and I'm thinking about pulling the trigger.
Thanks for your time!

This same dealer also has MINT US998 V30+ for $310 right now. Not sure why it's less than the LS998, but not only is it $5 cheaper but with the 15% discount, that makes it less than $264.... I fully expect it's probably already a converted LS998, but that still saves you one step in bootloader unlock and rooting..
BACK TO YOUR QUESTION.
YES, pull the trigger -- on either.
For the LS998 V30+ $315 - 15% = less than $268 for MINT LS998 V30+. I've bought two LS998 from this dealer -- gave one to my sister, gave the other to my wife (both converted to US998).
Just make sure you ONLY stick to the "mint" for sale (9/10) from this dealer. Don't buy the "good", "very good" -- ONLY MINT.
Yes, the "LS998" will work on Verizon, but not as you buy it. As you easily modify it, with Frankenstein. You'll convert the LS998 first to US998 to sim card unlock/network unlock and make it Verizon-compatible -- with all proper CDMA and LTE bands, blah, blah, blah. At this point you could use it on Verizon since you now have a carrier unlocked US998 V30+, meant to be used on all North American carriers.
http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-US998-Unlocked-v30
US998
CDMA: 800 MHz CDMA
2G GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS (HSPA):850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE Bands: 1/2/3/4/5/7/12(17)/13/20/25/66
ANY North American V30 variant (AT&T H931, Verizon VS996, Sprint LS998, carrier unlocked US998, Canadian H933, regional AS998) can be converted to any other North American V30 variant (except for T-mobile H932) with dev patched LGUP (a.k.a. Frankenstein) The only reason the Sprint LS998 seems more popular is for some reason it was ridiculously cheap on eBay as no one wanted carrier locked down Sprint phones. The Verizon, AT&T, even carrier unlocked US998 were going for $200 more. Then, we found out you could CONVERT the LS998 V30+ to any other North American V30+ and carrier unlock it in the process. Woo hoo! This then reached epic proportions when you add bootloader unlock and root to the mix.
OR you could convert straight to Verizon VS996 from LS998 -- and make it be a Verizon V30+ (which Verizon doesn't actually sell, they only sell the V30). However, let's not confuse you and let's say you convert eBay LS998 V30+ to US998 V30+ for right now...
But wait, there's more! NOW that you have US998, this means you also have fastboot flash commands. You have also converted to an US998 Oreo KDZ with wonderful bootloader unlock exploit. So, at this point we now go on to the WTF bootloader unlock and root. You unlock bootloader, install TWRP, and root.
OK, you started with an LS998 V30+. You converted to US998 V30+ to carrier unlock the phone AND get fastboot flash commands. You've now unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted the phone. 30 minutes have gone by. What are you going to do with the rest of the day?
Well... here's where it gets interesting. AT THIS POINT, you can call it a day, stick in your Verizon SIM card and be happy. OR you can flash the VS996 TWRP-flashable stock "ROM" @westwood24 made for us (basically the latest Verizon update as a TWRP flashable zip file, but with TWRP custom recovery). Now you have Verizon firmware and modem on your phone -- but still have TWRP and root.
(Sprint users feeling left out, yes there's ways to flash back to Sprint firmware. Or you can go flash custom ROMs and just use Sprint APNs and modem.)
Back to @Stormwing's question. You can even flash custom ROMs, if you wish.
Other Verizon users can chime in at this point if they want, to give you suggestions.
Wow @ChazzMatt, thanks for that incredibly thorough rundown! Is there risk in going for that $310 perhaps-preconverted 'US998' model? It does seem a little fishy as it's cheaper yet possibly better, and if the difference is just $5 I'm inclined to go for your tried and tested LS998.
All I want is a reliable handset that works on Big Red and can flash ROMs and I'll be a very happy camper. It's been too long since I've had an unlocked bootloader.

The only "drawback" I can think of is if this US998 already has 20D. Then you'd have temporarily flash 20A or 20B to get back to Oreo with bootloader unlock exploit. But you would have to flash that any way with LS998 (first to US998 Nougat, then US998 Oreo 20A or 20B).
So, you're still saving a step.
My brother in law just ordered this US998 V30+ yesterday, before the 15% sale code. I can't tell him, he'll be mad. But he dunked his old phone in water and needs a new phone fast. He's not into rooting and stuff, he just wants a good phone. And this one is IP68.
wow..I just happened to stumble onto this thread while searching on V30+. Just bought one w/ the 15% off. Thank you sir!!
Ok good to know, thanks. Unfortunately I ran into some technical difficulties with PayPal and ended up missing it. Guess I'll be joining you guys the next time one of these promos roll around....
I have just 2 things to say, 1) the selfie camera's quality is quite embarrassing, Gcam makes it better but you have to choose the longer shutter option and stay still for 3 seconds
2) Check the screen on low brightness for any inconsistencies of the notorious P-OLED

No one is going to defend the selfie cam in the V30. Oreo did make it better. (On Nougat you had to turn off the skin enhancement setting.)
Since I don't use my phone display at very low brightness, that's not an issue for me. You lose vibrancy and colors of OLED displays at low brightness. I've owned five of these phones (gave two to relatives) and know five more relatives/friends who bought for themselves. We all keep the displays at normal brightness, so the topic has never come up. For me "normal" is anything over 50%. I keep mine on 70%.

10 means Nougat
20 is Oreo
You are half way through Frankenstein. You still need to upgrade to "safe" Oreo.
And d means the exploit is patched then? sorry newbish on these phones I am.

No. The letter is just the software version. B comes before C. Etc.
But US998 20D has the July 2018 security patch that blocks the bootloader unlock exploit where we don't need LG's permission.
For Europe it's 20Y.
You can look at the date in the file name and roughly tell which update has (most of time). Any with July and later, stay away from. I can think of one H930DS model where an early July update still had June security patch, but that's the rare exception.
Any July 2018 or later, stay away from until bootloader unlock. If you get one like that, you can still temporarily downgrade to unlock bootloader. Just don't install on purpose until she after you unlock the bootloader or you're making extra work for yourself for no reason.
Heads up everyone: eBay is doing a Labor Day promo for 20% off with the code JUSTRELAX
I'm an idiot. It's restricted to certain sellers only again.
HOWEVER the seller has raised the prices in anticipation and the aforementioned LS998 is now $288 after the code, but the US998 is happily still at $264 after the code. @christoophat, were you able to return yours though? And @ChazzMatt, besides the screen, how was the condition of the your brother's phone?

The seller was a bit hard to get hold of, took 3 emails thru ebay to finally get him to respond, to offer to get it returned for a replacement. Hopefully the return gets processed soon & he still has an actuall 9/10 phone left to exchange it with. Where do you find out about the ebay sales? I never get any emails from ebay about them...

I'm wondering if, during these sales, that ebay covers the balance for the sellers that's taken off during them. My invoice shows the full price ($309), but I only paid $263.
And yes, I noticed that the average prices for V30s have spiked up a bit. 20% off is a sweet deal. Also found a killer Tech21 Evo Check case for $8.

I see notifications in the eBay app.

I've sent my phone for repair under warranty, but they're claiming it's been modified

I grabbed my V30 Canadian Edition (LGH933) the day it came out (Oct 31 2017) and have been fairly happy with it so far. I noticed about a month ago some yellow discoloration on the screen near the top and top-sides, and ended up sending it in for warranty repair last week. LG had me send it to a third-party for it, called FutureTel, and they have claimed the phone has been Modified/Rooted and is therefore not eligible for warranty repair.
This is the screenshot they've sent me as their proof:https://i.imgur.com/3CJeTYM.png
Now, the LGH933 (Canadian version) is not listed under the "Supported Devices" for bootloader unlock here: https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev And their "tool" is still showing that some mounting flag has been modified. I have a suspicion that it might be related to an app I had on, from the play store, called Package Disabler for LG, which needed to be added as a Device Administrator in order for it to work. This is just a guess though, because I have seen one other reddit thread about this problem but he did not use the app (the app he thought caused it was a Wakelock app).
Now they want me to either pay up $600 CAD for the repair, or pay $40 CAD to get the phone shipped back to me. Both of which are leaving me feel very cheated, as I truly believe that I have not modified my phone's firmware like they're claiming.
I'm looking for any help on this issue. It's very scarey to me if the tool they're using the validate warranties is returning these results for a phone that has not been rooted, then how many people might get cheated out of a valid warranty.

Just to be clear, you are claiming you bought your phone brand new and never unlocked the bootloader and rooted it?
I don't care what LG website shows about "supported" bootloader unlock, we've all been able to unlock our V30/V30+/V30S bootloader and root since mid-May 2018 (except for T-Mobile H932). Where have you been? They probably suspect you did that.

if you had bought the phone used, I would say someone else did it before you. But buying used, you wouldn't have a warranty.

My wife cracked display on her LG v30 US998, something which is not covered under warranty. So I sent it to LG for an out-of-warranty repair, which cost $146 US dollars + my UPS shipping to LG in Texas. So $164 total. They replaced the display, and my payment to them even included FedEx shipping back to me! It took a week, I got it back a few days ago, it's as good as new.
While it was gone, I switched her over to one of the Sprint LS998 V30+ that I bought cheap off eBay, which I converted to US988 V30+, which DOES have bootloader unlocked. Her V30 was not bootloader unlocked, and is still under the 2 year warranty, but dropped/cracked displays aren't covered under warranty.
If it were 146 dollars then I'd be considering it. But they want $600 Canadian.

That's what's strange. That price is almost like a replacement phone, not replacement display...
Since I knew the severely cracked display wasn't covered under warranty, first I went to one of those cell phone display repair franchises. They said they can't source this display and that I needed to send it to LG. So I called LG customer service, I told them the problem, they said it wasn't covered under warranty -- but said they offered out of warranty display repair for $146. And that I had to ship it to them. I said OK.

Yeah their invoice for the repair is just an estimate of $533 + $70 tax. No indication of what it's for.
Did they replace the entire display on yours or just the outer glass? They may have just done the outer glass if it was an option.

LG customer service gave me that price over the phone before they even saw the damaged display.
The actual repair receipt is vague. Lists serial, IMEI, etc and says
SYMPTOM: EXTERNAL PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE PHONE.
REPAIR: physical damage.
Warranty type: out of warranty
Lists date received, date returned.
I would post a screenshot but I would need to block off all the serial and IMEI and stuff.
Futuretel is ****ing scum. They're terrible to deal with.
It's also absurd that your hardware issue is being held up by a software setting.
Have you tried calling LG to complain? That's what I had to do when Futuretel was ****ing me over with my G4.

What did you say to lg to get then to help? I chatted online with someone but they were pretty stern saying that if the technician says it's been modified it's no longer in warranty, and they're trusting the technician.
I have an escalation call supposedly incoming sometime today but I am just expecting more crap.
It was for my G4 bootloop, but I had to go back and forth with Futuretel and LG a bunch of times, not due to the problem you're having. I'm sorry, it was a couple years ago now so I can't help much on specifics.

if you aren't being dishonest, you couldn't have rooted a phone not in your possession at the date it says it was.

Good eye! The phone wasn't even released yet on 07.23.2017 (wasn't available for sale) -- so if it was rooted then, LG did it themselves! Maybe sold you some kind of engineering sample? Wasn't released to North America until October 2017.
@Acidictadpole, I would appeal -- as that root was impossible for you to do on that date. Phone was still in South Korea! But VERY possible LG screwed something up on your phone during manufacturing or something.
Sorry to necropost, but I felt it would be better to find a related thread than start a new one. My V30 has a busted screen but it has definitely been modified by me. I was thinking I could trick them by flashing a kdz and relocking the bootloader but clearly that won't work if they run this test. Really hoping that they won't care since it's an out of warranty repair anyway? I loved my V30 and as tempted as I am to get another one or maybe one of those V35s if the bootloader ends up getting unlocked soon, I can't deny that the $146 LG quoted me for the out of warranty repair is cheaper than any of those. Only the corner of my glass is busted up so I feel bad even paying that much for it, but I'm not really willing to carry it around in my pocket because I don't like finding shards of glass in there. All of my Xiaomi phones have newer Android versions anyway so I suppose it's a blessing from a security perspective.

Verizon activation help

Hey everyone,
So I did this on my personal phones a few years ago, and even my MIL's phone (Mother in law). I cut the SIM card in those cases, and plugged it into the new phone, and all worked just fine for the most part (MIL phone is having issues, maybe because I did a poor job of the manual cutting).
Anyway, now I'm on the FIL's phone (father in law). I activated a brand new phone on an old Droid Turbo phone, and it's working fine there. I moved the SIM to the new V30 (originally US998) and it's not registering on the network. I wonder if I just did this too quickly (I didn't let the SIM "sit" on the Turbo for very long)... which is why I moved it back there now. I figure I should let it sit there for a bit, and then try again?
Any ideas on what else I can try? Basically, the V30 was saying it saw the phone number, but it said IMS not registered... any ideas on how we can fix that? The *#*#4636#*#* doesn't work on the LG phones... I've used Shortcut Master before to register VOLTE, but I'm out of my realm here because the SIM is not registering the phone, so that's not an APN or VOLTE issue.
Any help or ideas are appreciated... thank you!
EDIT: One more comment. I'm hoping to go to VZ tomorrow and get a new card for the MIL phone. In order to activate that SIM, I'll have to activate that SIM on the Turbo, otherwise VZ will throw a hissyfit for the mismatched IMEI. So, I'm hoping I can repeat this process with the new SIM on that phone... I'm hoping we don't have this problem there too.
Ugh, VZ, why do you suck so bad.
I've been down a similar path. I own the same phones. You didn't mention which rom is on the v30 but suspect it is a us998. I, too, had some difficulties getting my v30 to work properly on the vz network. The turbo with a stock verizon rom came in handy to set vz account/network options.
1) Install stock MM rom on the turbo. The debloated one by computer_freak works great. You can get it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/dr.../computerfreek274mm1-0-android-6-0-1-t3503634
2) Pop the vz sim in the turbo
3) Activate: HD calling, visual voicemail in the dialer, and set up volte. I don't remember if vowifi is an option on the turbo. If it is, then turn it on, too.
4) Put sim in the v30 and enjoy.
Another and possibly better option to get the sim and phone working together is to cross-flash to the verizon vs996 rom. The advantage of the vs996 rom is that vowifi and visual voicemail will work. I've never succeeded in getting vowifi provisioned on the us998 open market rom. That is some vz-lg shennanigan.
I second what cmrntnnr stated above and emphasize flashing VS996 on the V30. Big Red can still tell what your phone actually is by its IMEI. My V30 originally was a LS998. I also had to manually set the MMS settings to keep Verizon firmware from thinking it is a Sprint phone. Please see this if you have issues with MMS. https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/guide-how-fixed-mms-settings-flashable-t3856109
Yes, I am on VS996 for this phone. And I did this very same process on my personal phones, but for some reason the new V30 isn't accepting the card, which is why I asked.
Yes, I know VZ can see it's not a true VS996. Thanks for the link to fix MMS, but I wanted to fix the lack of connection first before working on the other things.
I will try it again (maybe I swapped SIMs "too fast" for the VZ network to accept it or something?... though I swapped it back to the FIL's LG G3 with no issues... so very weird, and annoying).
All that said, we may just get them "true" VS996s instead, because that way they can still get help from VZ when they aren't nearby (they live in FL, while I'm in CT). It's not that VZ can't help, it's just that they won't... that's what pisses me off...
EDIT: Again, the question is, why isn't this phone connecting? It's seeing the phone number, sees the SIM fine, just wouldn't connect to the network and kept saying it wasn't registered... didn't know if there was a trick I could do or something to force it (probably not, as it may be a VZ-server thing, but who knows).

Try the Verizon secret menu and play around with the settings: *#*#4636#*#* or LG Secret Menu (must use stock LG dialer and not Google dialer): *#546368#*996#

Awesome, this is what I was looking for.
I tried getting to the secret menu, but it never seems to work (even on stock dialer). When I did the VOLTE fix on my phone, I had to use ShortcutMaster.
Regardless, once there, what should I look for/do?
I have the phone back in-hand now. As before, the SIM works fine in the old phone (LG G3) but it still doesn't connect with the new V30 (on VS996). Note, I did use a SIM adapter to put it into the old phone (it uses micro-SIM sized cards). And, again, it's seeing the correct phone number, but it's not connecting to the network. Network mode is set to global (default) and toggling that around doesn't help.
I also got ShortcutMasterLite to let me into the 4636 menu, but I don't see anything wrong in there either. Not sure how to get this phone working?!
I'm now wondering if it's just a defective phone? I'm seeing signal levels that match my other phone, but still, who knows? Maybe the radio is having issues or something... I suppose I could try my personal SIM instead, or something?
So no help.... not that I'm blaming anyone.
Problem is that the Ebay listing said that this phone will NOT work on VZ, etc. So, I don't have much hope of the seller helping me, even though it's a completely false statement, as we all know. So, I may have to convert back to US998 and then test with an ATT SIM to prove to the seller that this is a defective phone. Anyone have any ideas on how I could do this? For example, would anyone be willing to meet me somewhere (I live in CT, but I can drive wherever in New England) to try your SIM on this phone? I figure, if it doesn't work, then I have proof that it's defective. Otherwise, I don't think the seller is going to even try to help.
Anyone willing to throw me a bone here with a little help? Or anyone have other ideas on how I can test? Does ATT have a prepaid thing that I could try for a month (low cost) to prove it out or something? I know far too little about ATT...

Yes.
They have a Prepaid minutes plan they don't like to advertise.
https://www.att.com/buy/wireless/prepaid/devicesandplans
When you put in your IMEI to the AT&T Prepaid webpage put all zeroes instead of your real IMEI and it will show you all plans, not just what they want to sell you.
Also AT&T Prepaid uses same same regular AT&T SIM cards. Don't let them sell you some special SIM card.
I'd have reached out to help if I had any ideas. Your hypothesis that it is broken seems reasonable and so does flashing it to US998 as verification.
Getting on the ATT network without ATT is a breeze. Cruise down to Walmart and pick up a StraightTalk kit for $30-50. It will have sims for VZ, ATT, and TM so you can choose whichever network is best for you. They're good to have around.

Which VS996 version did you flash? Nougat, Oreo, Pie? Try Nougat as it's the most reliable VS996. US998 Nougat should read VZW sim also.
Thanks for the tips on ATT and Straight Talk. I think I will have to try that, but first I'm going to try to get the ebay seller to "promise" me that if I go through this, that they'll actually do something to help. Otherwise I'm just spending money for no reason.
As for the VS996, it was Oreo, the same version I'm using on my personal phones, and the other V30 - you may recall that the MIL's phone is functioning, but the FIL's is the one that is just not connecting at all... I always get 0-bars with the "x" on that one. That's what I'm trying to fix here...
Again, thanks for the tips, let's see what I can get done here with all your excellent help!
Ok, so the debacle is over. I wanted to provide a little info for what ended up happening, and what I learned.
Longer story short, I was able to get the first H931 phone working fine with no issues. It runs on VZ towers on VS996 and US998 (I created a video for the latter, to prove it to myself and the warranty company). The second one refused to work on VZ, and I felt it had issues on GSM carriers as well (I tested Mint Mobile, as it was free). This phone was sent for repair to a warranty company that the ebay seller offered to pay for.
The warranty company tried to get that phone to work on VZ, but couldn't. They kept telling me that this was "not possible" when, as we all know, it most certainly is. Bottom line, something is defective with that phone, as I suspected. However, I expect no one is going to bother to repair it so it will likely show up on Ebay or wherever again as an H931 (or US998) with this problem persisting. I figure another buyer may not notice it, as long as they don't use VZ....
But, the moral here is that you should be careful when you buy the device, to ensure that the seller doesn't put text on their post saying that it won't work on other carriers. I was afraid of this text, but I went forward anyway as I (and we) know this works fine. I also proved it on one phone (the first one). However, if the seller says this, then they won't necessarily take any steps to help fix the issue if there is a problem anyway. I got lucky and my seller at least provided me with the warranty card, which helped a lot.
The warranty company did do everything they could to help. I have to commend them on that, as we are hacking the phone, after all... but Jose was very understanding and helpful regardless. For this reason, I really recommend their service... they are CPS Warranty and they can be found at https://www.cpscentral.com/ Again, they could have blown me off, but they didn't... and after all that, they offered a settlement to pay be back for the phone since they couldn't get it working on VZ. I'm out a little money, but the settlement was fair, so I can't complain.
So, while this all works, we do need to be careful, as some devices are defective and hard to detect for this type of issue.
