I was on T-Mobile for years but I could save a lot if I became the 4th phone on a shared unlimited plan on AT&T. So I bought a US998 and I brought it to AT&T to add a line on a bring my own device offer. They have an optional $4/month service which is essentially greatly extended caller ID and it identifies "likely scams" among other things like mobile user caller ID and identifies a lot of things that regular caller ID doesn’t. I had it on T-Mo until earlier today. It, however, requires that the phone be accepted for "HD Voice" which the V30 is but not on AT&T if the IMEI isn’t on "their" list of their phones. It isn’t a matter of the phone having the US998 firmware but that the IMEI doesn’t match. If I understand things correctly, and I don’t know that I do, then even if I bought an H931 from an eBay seller, I'd be unable to activate it with full functionality.
If I'm wrong, then I could return the US998 and buy an H931 and flash it to a us998 and give up some memory (the US998 is a V30+) and some cheap headphones and get the missing features. Or I could go back to T-Mo and spend another $30 a month. Or I could give up the caller ID, Wi-Fi calling, HD voice and a few lesser features.
I found an email form an AT&T rep, back in 2016, saying that they were working on adding all features for users of phones brought to AT&T and that they were working on it. I don’t remember if they implied it was at great urgency. When I was at the store, the people there spent over a half hour trying to activate the service and they couldn’t figure it out. Of course, they merely tried the same failing things over and over and never tried other things like maybe calling AT&T support, or looking it up or even asking people who might have known. When I called and got as supervisor, I was told it didn’t work because it was the policy of AT&T to not offer the services on BYOD phones.
Anyone know anything here? I'd prefer info trhat;'d help me get my6 phone on AT&T wiht the features but I'd settle for knowing tghat it';s not goping to work.

No, you don't quite understand correctly. They are pressing you to have an AT&T-branded phone, not specifically a phone they personally sell to you. You could buy an H931 off eBay and it would have the IMEI they SAY they are looking for.
Having said that you admit they didn't call AT&T tech support. I would call AT&T tech support myself or go to another AT&T store. If they still say no, then buy an H931 off eBay...
Also, what happens when you flash the H931 TWRP-flashable zip to your US998? That doesn't allow the AT&T features?
from, what I understand, it comes down to provisioning and they describe the process as one with no discretionary range at all. The only issue is whether the IMEI is in the list that can be so provisioned. Whether it is owning a H931 or a phone of their supply is unknown but they do insist it is the latter. I compare it to the issues some people report trying to unlock a phone they say is paid for and others say it is not. The idea being that there is a somewhat fluid master list somewhere and they are saying there is a list of H931s meant for sale by AT&T agents.
I don't believe it either but it appears to be a road block.
So now do I try to return the US998 because I had activation issues with it? On a fairness level, it's not the fault of the eBay reseller who sold me the phone he said he would, and by all accounts, in good working order.
So what would you do, if you accepted my position that I need these features that seem to require an IMEI that AT&T is willing to provision with HD Voice, and the resulting capabilities which only follow on a phone provisioned for HD Voice so I could subscribe for the $4/.month caller ID service. I’d hate to pay another $300 to buy a H931 to find that the problem still exists or that I now have 2 phones when I need one.

I'm going to leave that decision to you.
My sister and brother-in-law both have LS998 V30+ (off eBay) converted to US998 V30+ and they're both on post paid AT&T. He's a successful tech salesperson and they live in a million dollar house.
Another friend of mine (very tech oriented) has postpaid AT&T on native US998 V30 (B&H Photo) and works for a world wide news organization.
I don't know whether they have HD Voice, WiFi calling on their US998 -- but they have never complained about not having it...
They all got this phone on my recommendation, and are using it on postpaid AT&T.
____
My wife and I, my mother and two other friends have either native or converted US998 on Prepaid AT&T. I do not have those features, but I like having the lower price of AT&T Prepaid with the speed of postpaid AT&T included vs the lag of AT&T MVNOs.
____
But you know your needs better than me. I would just try with another store or AT&T technical support before giving up. If you do return the US998 you can bootloader unlock and root H931. I would activate first to get everything done, before following the WTF instructions.

I just spoke to a so-called supervisor who tells me that the issue is one of supported devices on the BYOD plan. they say that while the H931 as sold by AT&T is a supported device, an h931 not sold by AT&T is somehow fundamentally different and it appears to them as having a different "image" (a term not explained or otherwise defined) and so there is no way that a non AT&T H931 will ever appear on their system, as one of theirs. As not one theirs, they refuse the range of services that include "HD Voice, Wi-Fi calling and enhanced caller ID and a security feature that I don’t know the name of.
They insist that this "image" issue is really true and that anyone with an AT&T supplied H931 and a non-AT&T H931 appear as different devices on their system.
They proposed creating an escalation ticket so that the "back office department" can look to see if there is anything that they can do. They say as things are currently set up there is no option anywhere to authorize a non-AT&T phone but maybe the back-office folks can do it, I’m promised a callback in 24 hours and he is improbably making positive sounding noises. As so much of this makes no sense, I don’t expect qi positive result, but I will give them 24 hours
I'm not casting aspersions on any user of AT&T's postpaid or pre-paid system but I can say that I ne3edc Wi-Fi calling for reception where I work and I want the caller IDF service and have come to want it in the 4 years I’ve been on T-Mobile who offers the same product.
Please don’t think that I'm critiquing anyone who is using any carrier's system to their satisfaction. I'm just saying that I would be significantly troubled by not having Wi-Fi calling as I live and work in areas where there is no calling except once inside buildings and connected to their Wi-Fi LAN. And for whatever reason, I'm being excluded on grounds that seem suspicions.

I've just about decided to go back to T-Mo and I need a rom that wont lose root an dwill enable B71 and would like the latest, stockest thing that has been at least partly debloated. Is there any such thing? Is there info for loadng the lastest H932 rom on a US998?

This T-Mobile ROM port for US998 won't give you LTE band 71, but probably everything else:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/rom-lg-v30-t-mobile-stock-rom-20s-t3925486
is there any way to get band 71, and wifi calling on a us998?
I just went to a t-mo store with the us998 rom and put a t-mo sim in it and the hd voice calling worked fine although I didn't try Wi-Fi calling yet. But where I live I think b71 would make a huge difference. In any case I want a chance to find out if this is true. This is probably the main reason I bought the V30: my V20 doesn’t even have B71 and I have no reception in way too many places where t-mo says there is coverage. They also imply that most new build out is with b71, and they further imply that all else equal, ,b71 works better as if it's just magic. It seems at last worth checking out if there's a chance. I see some roms change the modems and some do not. Is it likely that that roms that don’t change the modem will not change the lack of b71 so I'd need a rom that includes an h932 modem to even have a chance of b71 working?
Thanks agian for all yuor help.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/t-mobile-600-mhz-lte-band-71-s-carrier-t3671351
That was also in September 2017 before the OFFICIAL carrier unlocked (Open Market) US998 V30/V30+ was released. We were hoping the upcoming "official" carrier unlocked US998 (sold by authorized 3rd party retailers like B&H Photo) would ALSO have the new U.S. T-Mobile LTE band 71 -- and one part of T-Mobile SEEMED to be hinting it would... That you could buy EITHER H932 OR the "official" carrier unlocked US998 and have all the T-Mobile bands. These official carrier unlocked phones are called "Open Market" phones by LG; these are the phones that LG usually lists in their LG Bootloader Unlock code eligible list.
Thus the thread I started, and subsequent XDA NEWS article. That turned out to NOT be true. The tweets we misleading.
Even so, we also hoped with root on the "Open Market" US998 we could activate the hidden T-Mobile network menus we could clearly see. THAT is also discussed in the thread.
Yet in all the time since then, no one has had any luck getting T-Mobile LTE band 71 working on any phone except U.S. T-Mobile H932.
@runningnak3d, the dev who ROOTED the T-Mobile H932 currently uses a US998 on T-Mobile. If anyone could get LTE band 71 on T-Mobile with US998, it would be him. . He hasn't, and he says LTE band 71 is not that important for him.
______
We also found out the the only difference between the "Open Market" official carrier unlocked US998 V30 (64GB) sold by B&H Photo and the US998 V30 (64 GB) sold by U.S. Cellular is the B&H Photo V30 was secretly eligible for LG bootloader unlock code. One of my V30 used official LG bootloader unlock code, but we had to hack the LG dropdown menu on the LG Dev website to enter the information. LG has NEVER officially announced the Open Market US998 V30 is eligible for bootloader unlock code. That trick/hack does NOT work for the Open Market US998 V30+. So, only one of my phones was bootloader unlocked using that method.
However there was NO DIFFERENCE between the various US998 V30+ (128GB) sold by the any entities. NO US998 V30+ is eligible for LG bootloader unlock code, and ALL US998 V30/V30+ are actually carrier unlocked -- even those sold by U.S. Cellular.
LG was not forthcoming with any of this information. We had to figure it out by ourselves, through trial and error.
With WTF exploit, we are not dependent on LG for bootloader unlock code. But that developments did not happen until May 2018. My US998 V30+ was not bootloader unlocked and rooted until then.

Of course I know it was you. that's why I'm asking you follow up questions.
I'm seeing comments along two theories and I dont i know which is more likely true. Theory one is that the 835 chips come in two types, ones that have band 71 capabilities and those tht dont, or the other theory which is that there are software modems thaat compensate for the lack of included band 71 modems, and where a certain software modem could add the capbility. In effect, some say that the US998 can never get band 71 and others say for example, that if you knew what you were doing wiht the Shortcut Master you could add the band, or alternatively, you could flash the correct rom or modem.
And so I start doing my homework and sure enough, you show up as one of the few that know anything about it.
I have no idea but I keep being told that things arent going to go the way I want them to. I'm hoping that I can get band 71 using this phone because I just bought this phone and I need or think I need band 71. It is why I bougnt this phone.
How do things look for me getting band 71? My clever plan to go to AT&T failed rather dramatically by my standards, even if you think I should be fine without the functions that so many people don't care about. Out in the boonies, T-Mpo is putting most of their efforts into band 71 and I spent a lot of time driving where there is no reception and I'm told there'd be a lot more if I could get that band. that's mainly why I bought the new phone as the V20 still works about the same, not getting band 71 every day.
I'm trying to learn about this phone after 2+ years with the H918 but I'll never pick up what you know any time soon, so I'm asking you.

Bob, if you knew I wrote it and had already read the thread -- then why did you bring it up? If you read the thread you know it's not possible, as far as we know. I spent a lot of time trying to explain all that in my post and you already knew it. I didn't know how up to speed you were. If you had said, "I read this article, I read the whole thread, is there anything new, yes or no?" I would have simply said no, nothing new. Move on.
You are making my head hurt.
Here are your choices:
Go buy a new AT&T H931 from AT&T.
Go buy a mint AT&T H931 off Swappa you KNOW was bought from AT&T. Swappa instead of eBay this time because they check IMEI, etc before letting it be sold. Having been bought from AT&T rather than leftover stock from some warehouse, it SHOULD be in the AT&T system as eligible for all the stuff you want. If you are uncertain, then go buy straight from AT&T.
Go buy a T-mobile H931 if you want to stay with T-mobile and get LTE band 71.
no, I didnt understand and now I do
thanks. i thought it was supposed to be possible.
so my best bet is to get a 931 so I can pay less.

I can go to your page at https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/us998-lg-v30-market-us998-t3736910
do you know which of the trwo (10c or 10d) is the 7.1.2 my phone came with?

After searching the forums this seems to be an LG specific issue and dates as far back as 2012 on some models, however the suggested solutions have not worked for me, so I am hoping that there may be another way around.
So I got a US998 (carrier unlocked US) V30 and I stuck my cricket wireless sim in and all works flawless. When I try to do a software update I get the message 'Your phone is not registered yet'. So OK, I go online and register the phone using the model code and IMEI, but still no luck.
Then I followed the suggestion of installing LG PC Suite, which tells me that this phone is not compatible and I should use LG Bridge. That connects but gives me in a nutshell the same issue that it cannot get an update due to some issue.
One suggestion was to use the main carrier sim, which in my case would be ATT, but I don't know anyone who has ATT as service. I guess I could ask some random strangers if they are on that service and if they would be willing to let me use their sim in my phone, but unlikely.
Has anyone encountered this issue and what did you do to get your phone to update?

There's no update for this phone yet.
By the way, I use AT&T SIM card for AT&T Prepaid. Same exact SIM card as AT&T postpaid (contract) customers.
Not sure why you are getting that error message. When I check for update, it says I have the latest software. I didn't register anything online, didn't connect to any software.

I am on Cricket, which operates on ATT network, is even owned by ATT, but apparently is not recognized by LG as one of the carriers.
As I said, others all the way back to 2015 suggest to remove the cricket sim and insert an ATT sim, which apparently registers the phone properly on ATT's network and thus allows for OTA's to occur.
I am aware that no current updates are out, but when they do I don't want to be stuck on 7.1.2. Anyway, I will ask around at work when I get back next week. There are bound to be some folks around that use ATT.
I'm using ATT post paid monthly plan with an old sim card from my previous phone, and it works fine on my us998. However, for some reason, on myatt page this phone is not being recognized, so I went to att store and asked someone to help me registering this imei in their system, but after they entered my imei they say this number is unknown to their system, so it can't be registered. I don't know whether that will cause any problems in the future, but since the system updates should come from LG but not att so it should be fine.

My AT&T SIM card also worked fine but I wanted to make sure I was getting the fastest speeds, so I took the phone to AT&T store and registered it in their system. Since AT&T also sells a branded LG V30, there was no issue registering it. They know what an LG V30 is. They just needed the serial number.
Whereas three years ago, for both mine and my wife's Moto XT1225 (international version of the Droid Turbo) which I imported from another country, I told them to register it as a Moto Nexus 6 -- closest they had in their system. Same manufacturer, 90% same specs, just a more reasonable size of the Moto Nexus 6. That worked.
You are right that system updates for the carrier unlocked US998 will come from LG and not AT&T or any carrier.

So neither one of you is getting a pop up message when you try to do a manual check of software updates (see the attached images)?
Yesterday I registered the device with the 14 digit MEID hoping that was the trick to get rid of the message but no luck, today I added the IMEI which adds a digit as a second product on LG's support page. Maybe that is what I am missing.
I'll contact LG next to find out what is going on. I can also not take advantage of the 2 year warranty as the guy I bought the phone from won it during a LG promotional event in NY so no purchase receipt apparently exists. Oh well.

Here's the message I'm getting when I click on software update. Took the screenshot last night when I first replied to you, but Tapatalk app was fighting me in trying to attach it. Said I didn't have "permission" to include attachments to this forum, when I include attachment all the time.
I plan on voiding the warranty as soon as possible on both my LG V30 and V30+.

LG UP might be an option for me I guess if I can't get this worked out. I am new to LG phones so gotta do a little reading up to understand how that all works. Guessing it is similar to ODIN on the SGS phones that I am used to.

I just set up my 3rd carrier unlocked LG V30/V30+ last night. For each, when you go to the software update section you have to agree to all the legalese the first time. You did that? Several boxes to check and agree to before it will check for updates.

Of course, as mentioned before I'm using AT&T Prepaid SIM cards. Real AT&T, not Cricket. And yes I know AT&T owns Cricket. But there's a reason you'll never see an AT&T logo anywhere near a Cricket store, and they don't let Cricket use the same AT&T SIM card postpaid/prepaid users do. Cricket is configured as an MVNO. I don't know why that would matter in this case, but possibly some way AT&T botched something else with Cricket?

Tell me where you bought your phone? You say "carrier unlocked"...
Is it...
* "open market" US998, official carrier unlocked model bought from authorized retailers like B&H Photo or Best Buy --
or is it...
* the unofficial carrier unlocked model from U.S. Cellular? Either bought from them or through eBay seller?
They are both "US998". But if from U.S. Cellular, then technically it is a carrier phone. Which may affect how updates are checked, distributed.
Just throwing out ideas.

So after checking again, you are spot on. This is the US Cellular version, so now what? I am stuck not being able to take updates unless I become a USC customer?
I bought the phone from an ebay seller who won the phone during a LG promotion in NY and he states that it was unlocked, which I can confirm since it took my Cricket Wireless card without any issue, but not being able to update will be a big worry for me.

Others have bought the U.S.Cellular model to use on other carriers, and they haven't posted any issues -- but they bought from U.S. Cellular itself. Whereas this one was a prize in a contest given by LG. So, maybe it's not "registered" in U.S. Cellular system like ones they actually sold? Basically something has slipped through the cracks.
This sounds like a Tier 2 support question for LG customer service or U.S.Cellular.
Sorry you're going through this.

Hello,
I also would like to know, I am on the same boat.
I got it used, the previous owner said he won it from LG event.
This is US Cellular version US998, but I can use it on my AT&T.
The thing is there is no US Cellular branch in southern CA.
Please post how you do.

I guess next step is to get LG's attention and hope there is a fix for this.
The other odd thing is that I cannot get LG Mobile Support tool installed.
Downloaded the drivers, installed them no issue. Then downloaded the tool and it always gets stuck during the installation process with an empty popup alert window. with a button that has not description, but when I press it the popup closes and the installation stops.
Has anyone successfully activated a B&H unlocked V30 or V30+ on Sprint? I've been told it should work and 4 people at Sprint said I need a new phone with an unlocked MEID # but I suspect it's a Sprint thing. B&H has offered to exchange.
I've done a lot of googling and have found no definitive answers.
No one?
Here is the answer from Sprint on their support community board.
Re: Unlocked V30+
Good morning! Unfortunately, this device is not listed as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) eligible device. This is because the device doesn't support all the Sprint bands so it wouldn't be a good experience for the customer to activate the phone since they won't enjoy a good service from us.
Re: Carrier unlocked V30+
Hey keithgreen66. Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately Sprint is only accepting the LG X charge as a Bring Your Own device. This is because not all device are comparable with out Network.

Have you found a solution? The real issue here is that LG did not ship the unlocked versions with an exchange ready rom. My phone did not have the LG email client and also did not have the exchange app. Without these you're stuck. I have tried installing the APK for both, but they're not working.
My Airwatch agent enables the email client but when I go into it I have no emails and no folders. It constantly crashes amd I cannot compose emails. Not sure if there are more apps required to make this work, but right now I'm stuck using a terrible 3rd party app called touchdown. Its terrible and will cost $20 for a perm license.

Nine app is much better than Touchdown app for corporate email. I used Touchdown for several years, but a couple of years ago they got bought out by Symantec and went to crap. I dumped them and went with NINE. Yes, Nine is a paid app too, but works well. Costs less than Touchdown app.
Also chek out this list below. Says Blue handles Exchange and is free. Nine (paid app) is also on that Top 10 list...

I was going to ask about the V30+ US998 doesn't have Email for exchange. I am kinda disappointed that LG doesn't include Email app.
I am forced to use Gmail for exchange. Now my Gmail and Exchange have the same icon in the notification bar. Is there a way to change my Exchange mail to different icon in the notification bar?
I have tried Microsoft Outlook and I don't like it. Is there a risk using third party (Touchdown and Nince app) for company emails?

I also use Nine. Only down for the app is the price. (15 bucks)
Other than that, it is best app imo.
I used to use MS Outlook on the other phones, but somehow outlook does not work with LG phones on syncing contacts.
I tried on G6 and V30 but did not work. Only email part works.
I paid 15 bucks for Nine. It works pretty good!
The problem with these apps youre referring to is that they aren't accepted in our MDM server, so my only option outside of touchdown is to make my v30 use the preinstalled LG email app and dependencies to make the lg Airwatch service sync up with that email app..

I started using Nine while working for a top corporation (ranked in the top 50 of the Fortune 500). Touchdown also worked previously, but then was bought by Symantec and they ruined it. I switched to Nine and it worked EVEN BETTER. With a company that has tight security.
I've since changed jobs to another company, and my Nine configured perfectly once I put in the proper server information. But a co-worker with the Outlook app had to have one of the IT people personally configure his, even though he was using the same information I used. (They wouldn't talk about what they had to change.)
So, there's nothing wrong with the Nine app -- but apparently only your company whitelists Touchdown? Or have you tried contacting your IT department?
Yeah, they are only allowing touchdown. I have no idea why they arr that stringent. Touchdown is a horrible horrible horrible app... I'm ready to return this and buy the verizon locked v30 just to stop using TD.
I got email and exchange installed but mail keeps insisting that I need to give it "phone" permissions, but thats not an option under permissions, so I'm kinda stuck. I'll talk to our sms group in a little bit and see if I can get around this.
It all beats using the company provided iPhone though.

So far, I have not seen anyone on these threads claiming to have activated on Sprint with a US998. I am a Sprint customer looking for a new high end phone with unlocked bootloader and have been following the progress of the v30 for several months hoping it could be my next device. Based on information I've found in these threads the US998 does not support band 26 and 41 which are sprint bands. It does support band 25 but one band out of three is not going to cut it.
The quote from kgreen66 in post #3 more or less says the same thing
"This is because the device doesn't support all the Sprint bands so it wouldn't be a good experience"
This leads to my question;
Is it possible that somewhere in the future the radio software or firmware from the Sprint version for the v30 (LS998) would be able to be somehow installed on the US998 such that it would have bands 25, 26 and 41 and work with the Sprint network and maintain unlocked bootloader?
If that was somehow possible could a workaround be devised to get around the fact that the phone would still have a US998 IMEI/MEID that Sprint might not want to activate because they think it doesn't support all the right bands?
I'm just trying to determine if there is any possibility that I could ever have a fully rooted, bootloader unlocked v30 on Sprint.
If you want an unlocked bootloader don't get the Sprint ls998. The bootloader is locked, they removed fastboot, LG bridge doesn't seem to work, and all the software is provided by Sprint servers. I can't find a Sprint tot or kdz file anywhere. It's pretty locked down. Not sure if the us998 will work on Sprint with all bands.

All LG images are now signed and you can't crossflash firmware to other variants with different model numbers.
Someone with a banned Sprint V30 (there's lots of them on eBay) was able to find an "unlocking" service that "changed" his phone to a U.S. Cellular model US998. At least enough to let him use it on a GSM based carrier. It didn't REALLY change firmware, it changed an identifier -- which is illegal in some countries and banned from discussion by XDA. So, we'll leave it there.
It's ironic you want to do the opposite... You want to change a good open market (official carrier unlocked model) LG US998 to pretend to be a carrier-locked Sprint phone.
Maybe it's possible, using those same methods, but it's seems it would be harder to fool Sprint into thinking it's their own branded phone. Surely there's more metadata they can check with their own systems.

I'm guessing one will never be released then I'm kinda soft bricked device only boots to firmware update even after the matter factory reset no receiver or system but only imei about factory reset boot and firmware update boot so I'm screwed only way to fix is to shop to lg
I'm so tired of LG putting the same damn code name for different reasons. So I'll just ask here. I know the v30+ from B&O is the US998. But US Cellular also has their own US998. My question is, Is the US Cellular one already unlocked or do I have to pay for the unlock? Also, is the bootloader unlockable? I've seen the US998 unlock and root thread but does that work on the US Cellular one? I remember the whole G5 debacle where LG gave the same code name to 2 different carriers and one was unlockable and the other was not. Thanks in advance, this is just very frustrating for me. I love LG but sometimes....
The US Cellular one is SIM-locked as I recall, and like any carrier phone would need to be paid off and an unlock requested. The bootloader is not unlockable officially and no exploit has been found to do so, though people are looking into it.
The Open Market US998 should be SIM unlocked from the start, and the bootloader can be unlocked on the LG dev site (though last I heard, you need to temporarily edit the page to add the phone model to the drop-down list).
So yea, exact same model number idiocy as before.
The US998+ is not yet bootloader-unlockable, it's currently in the same boat as the USC US998. If you want bootloader unlock for sure, grab yourself the normal Open Market V30. Spend the extra money you would have given LG and get a big SD card and decent case, instead.
No, the U.S. Cellular V30/V30+ is not sim-card locked/carrier locked/network locked. It's the "unofficial" carrier unlocked model. It's identical to the open market US998 in every respect except not eligible for bootloader unlock. (Well, neither is the open market V30+ at this point in time.)
Many people in this forum have bought the U.S. Cellular US998 and are not on U.S. Cellular. No unlock codes needed. See this thread, and search for "Cellular". I've posted about it since October...

But unless you were getting a fantastic deal on an U.S. Cellular model and you didn't care about bootloader unlock at all (even in the future), the best bet is the open market US998 V30.
Septfox said:

Can confirm it is sim unlocked as said by @ChazzMatt. I wanted the open market US998, but I could not pass up the deal on this brand new one. Thank you guys for the help. I'll just wait patiently until this bootloader gets unlocked. Or maybe never.
so they are coming out the box sim unlocked right?also they are saing that models newer than the s6 come unlocked, any experience with it?

I bought the US Cellular version and I'm using it for ATT straight out of the box.
Does anyone believe esn status could affect it ?? Since i am looking to buy one on ebay New but bad esn ,since they are not released on my country ,obviusly i have checked bands
I just got a brand spankin' new ("fair" condition scratch & dent, from ebay for dirt cheap) AT&T version, H931. Used the 15% off ebay coupon and got it for so cheap that it's not even fair. Along with that, I snagged the Sprint BYOD free 1-year service deal, so I'm living large obviously. I activated the plan initially on my now-dormant Essential phone, and as soon as I can go to the store and get the correct SIM for this V30, I'll be swapping them out on my line.
But here's what I'm confused on, both as a new Sprint customer and V30 owner. First of all, I'm amazed at how unreasonably uptight Sprint is with what phones they let on their network. Aside from that, I'm also really impressed with the V30's chameleon-like ability to be flashed to another carrier's firmware, and be completely functionally identical. Never seen another android phone do that... which is why I'm a little out of my element here, because I'm sure Sprint will be the ones to ruin the fun somehow.
Has anyone had experience using their V30 on Sprint and can tell me the following:
1. How are the Sprint bands on the US998 firmware - aren't there some missing?
If so, is it considered a good idea and just better overall to flash specifically to the sprint LS998 firmware?
Are there any risks with that, like potentially giving Sprint more power over your device (i.e. SIM-locking it or blacklisting the device's IMEI or something globally, regardless of whether you flash it back to US998 or one of the other carriers' firmware)
2. If you were to activate your V30 on Sprint, and then later on flashed a different firmware, would they see it as a different device altogether, and force you to pay the activation fee in order to get it back on again? Or is it just tied to the IMEI, no matter what firmware you're on (say you flashed a stock LS998 to the unlocked US998 using the Frankenstein method)
3. Also, I didn't back up my modemst1/modemst2 files before I flashed over from H931. Didn't think it mattered since I could just flash back to the H931 someday, but are those files unique to my particular device/IMEI?
if so, should I stop what I'm doing and fix it before I go any further with flashing LS998 or activating it on Sprint or any of that? How bad is it that I didn't make a backup, and is there anything that can be done now?
I just want to make sure I've got everything right before I go in tomorrow and sacrifice my new phone to the angry Sprint gods. Especially since eventually, when I go to sell it when I upgrade again, I'll probably want to flash it back to the H931 firmware with no problems from Sprint claiming lordship over it. I'm already astonished enough that I'm going to have to shell out $30 just to switch the device on my line.

Wow you are asking a lot of questions, and that's a lot of typing to answer.
I'm not a big fan of Sprint. Most people try to get away from them, not run towards them. That's how Frankenstein method was perfected, everyone with "cheap" locked-down LS998 trying carrier unlock their phones. Or people with AT&T H931 who didn't have AT&T and wanted updates. Figured out how to flash them with carrier unlocked firmware like US998, AS998, H933 -- or even flash to Verizon VS996 (which is not carrier locked to Verizon). However, then with WTF bootloader unlock method, you needed fastboot flash commands -- and of ALL the North American variants, only US998 has that. But originally Frankenstein was basically just to carrier unlock AT&T H931 and Sprint US998 phones...
You may be a world of trouble with Sprint. Your saving grace may be you can activate on Essential, then swap the SIM card to your H931/US998/LS998 phone once you have bootloader unlocked, rooted and flashed the LS998 zip file to "convert" it to LS998.
There are others who do use US998 firmware, but have merely flashed the Sprint modems to get all the Sprint bands. And they populate the Sprint APN. There's a big Sprint thread that details all that. But ALL of them had to first activate their LS998 prior to doing anything with bootloader unlock, TWRP, etc. One guy managed to do it after the fact but it took three pages of help. These are people with original LS998. No one that I am aware of has done it with a model that was not originally LS998.
But I'll repeat -- Your saving grace may be you can activate on Essential, then swap the SIM card to your H931/US998/LS998 phone once you have bootloader unlocked, rooted and flashed the LS998 zip file to "convert" it to LS998. Those other people didn't have another phone to activate (if I understand Sprint thinking, which I may not).
1. How are the Sprint bands on the US998 firmware - aren't there some missing?
Yes, there are two bands missing. Depending on where you live that may not be important. But you can flash Sprint modem, while keeping US998 firmware. Or you can fully flash to LS998 zip file to convert to LS998 while keeping TWRP and root.
4. Especially since eventually, when I go to sell it when I upgrade again, I'll probably want to flash it back to the H931 firmware with no problems from Sprint claiming lordship over it.
AT&T, like Sprint, does not publicly release their KDZ firmware. While you can flash back to H931 stock "ROM" via TWRP, then you lose fastboot flash commands -- so you cannot lock back bootloader and how do you get rid of TWRP? When you even go to sell it, best to sell it as US998. You can relock bootloader and flash full stock KDZ. There's TONS of former LS998 V30+ being sold on eBay as US998. Already Frankensteined by the sellers, and they are carrier unlocked.
3. Also, I didn't back up my modemst1/modemst2 files before I flashed over from H931. Didn't think it mattered since I could just flash back to the H931 someday, but are those files unique to my particular device/IMEI?
Doesn't matter. You can always flash to US998 to get those US998 bands, you can flash back to H931 via TWRP with stock ROM if you want those bands back. Flashing to LS998 ZIP file will give you those bands. The one thing you probably can't do after you start is completely restore the H931 to full stock with bootloader locked back. But that's no big deal, for selling on eBay. Just sell as US998. It's more versatile anyway and has fastboot flash commands. I'm an AT&T customer for 7 years and I've NEVER owned an AT&T branded phone.
The only people I can answer for is Sprint customers who had original LS998, activated them -- converted to US998, unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted, and then still continued to use their devices on Sprint. To still use devices on Sprint, some used TWRP-flashable zip file to convert back to LS998 while still keeping TWRP and root. Others just kept US998 firmware but flashed Sprint modems. Others have flashed AOSP custom ROMs, but had to use Sprint APN and maybe Sprint modem.
I don't want to discourage you. You may be able to get away with this, but only because your ace is the Essential phone. Activate that first. Then, do all the stuff for the H931/US998/LS998 conversion (including bootloader unlock, root). Put the SIM card in, then see if it works. If it doesn't, then what people have found is TELEPHONE help is the best. If you go to a store, they will immediately see you do not have a Sprint LS998. Whereas over the telephone, you can tell them you have LS998, the firmware version, etc, and it's often off-shore service who may not care it's not really Sprint hardware, if the firmware matches....
Good luck!

Wow, amazing. Wish I could hit the thanks button 10 times.
So it looks like my best bet is to just flash the LS998 KDZ and then body slam my SIM into it (I’m already activated on the Essential and it does look like they take the same specific SIM model, hallelujah)
I knew I was making a deal with the devil from the start when I took Sprint. Just that I’m pretty low on money right now, and a year of unlimited data service for free was just too good to pass up. I’m planning on moving state before too long, so when I have more income I might just drop sprint like a hot potato long before they cut me off (which is January 2020)

Update for anyone interested; it did not work. I flashed the Sprint 21a update .zip in TWRP, stuck my pre-activated SIM in, and it failed to register on the network. Tried updating PRL/Profile and everything, nothing worked (I'm not too surprised). Just to make sure, I got on the chat with a Sprint rep and as soon as I gave them my IMEI, they said it couldn't be activated on Sprint for BYOD.
Funnily enough, after a while of the phone trying to get the SIM to connect, it suddenly locked it and told me to restart and basically good luck, chump. So when I stuck it back in my Essential, already defeated enough, it suddenly borked my phone number and I couldn't get service again till I reset the PRL/Profile on that, and turned the phone off for 2 minutes.
Yeah, sprint is a huge hassle. Good lord

Just curious, did the rep deny activation because it's not an original LS998 or is it possible that the IMEI has been blacklisted?

Not sure if you mean blacklisted by Sprint only, or in general for all carriers (like you'd see on the Swappa ESN check or something). If the latter, then no, I checked it on multiple sites and they all said clear for activation. The AT&T model is GSM unlocked by default, so that makes sense.
All the guy said at Sprint was that my phone wasn't BYOD-compatible. I'm pretty sure they have a whitelist instead, and only put phones that are sprint-branded on it. Then if you call them up they'll activate unlocked devices for you, but my particular H931 probably shows up as GSM-unlocked (originally from AT&T) and thus not compatible. (even though technically, software-wise, it would be since I flashed the right bands on it)

Thing is, Sprint won't even take "original" (no Frankenstein) open market (B&H Photo) US998, even though it's the official carrier unlocked LG V30.
Hi all - long time lurker, first time poster. Big thanks to this community for helping me with random roots throughout the years, but I've come across something I can't quite find definitive answers on and need some assistance.
A few months ago I finally took the plunge and unlocked/rooted my AT&T h931. This was by far the most complicated root I've ever done, but I got it done. As most know, this requires first converting my h931 to a carrier unlocked US998, and then proceeding as usual. I followed this amazing thread on Reddit that someone put together based on a bunch of different threads here on XDA.
So I've now decided I want to buy a 1+7 Pro and want to take advantage of their trade-in program, so I'd like to get the phone back to stock and unroot/relock it all up. I found a solid thread here but because of my special circumstances I'm concerned there will be a bit more to it. The phone has the AT&T logo on the back, so if 1+ gets it and it's an unlocked 998, I'm not sure they'd give me and money for it. Without getting too into the weeds, I just want to know if anyone has advice or can point me to a post detailing this specific circumstance. Do I need to re-convert to a h931 before relocking? If I go back to stock/relock as a 998, will AT&T still work alright? I just don't want to mess something up and brick my phone.
Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!
To my understanding, AT&T doesn't share KDZs anywhere, so I don't think it's possible to convert your phone back to H931. I could be wrong.
Otherwise the general steps would be:
1) Revert to stock by flashing US998 KDZ with LGUP in refurbish mode. Phone must be completely stock before relocking the bootloader.
2) Boot into fastboot mode and relock bootloader with fastboot oem lock.
3) Flash the carrier firmware KDZ with LGUP in refurbish mode. Again, in the case of AT&T I don't think it exists.
The reason for this sequence is that the carrier firmware may not allow fastboot.
Edit: Oh, of course if H932 users should see this: Do NOT ever flash the US998 KDZ. Just flash the latest H932 KDZ and use that to relock the bootloader.
AT&T doesn't release KDZ... you can't go back to stock...

Interesting. I recognize my own words throughout most of it, of course -- with same emphasis I use.
Update H931 (AT&T) to Android Pie! (Walkthrough)
This is just the "bootloader unlock warning" screen. It's just a scary picture LG shows you as the phone boots to discourage you from unlocking your bootloader. Ignore it. It will NOT prevent you from doing anything.

I see they got a "Platinum" award on Reddit?
Well, at least they gave me credit! They combined my Frankenstein and WTF instructions, but focused on H931 and stripped out all the stuff that applied to other V30 variants. (Which is why WTF is like a decision tree -- if you have this variant do X, if you have that variant do Y -- until in Section 5 everyone ends up at the same bootloader unlock "starting line" with fastboot flash commands and early Oreo firmware.)
Everything is cool. They gave me credit and asked people to hit thanks button several times for me here on XDA in return. :good:
_______
However, the rest of their walkthrough is about custom ROMs, and they credited two other worthy people for that section.
In neither Frankenstein nor WTF, I do not really mention custom ROMs. Because that's not the purpose of either thread.
Frankenstein is to convert your phone to another North American V30 variants -- either to carrier unlock your phone or to instill fastboot flash commands, or both.
For WTF -- it's to unlock your V30 bootloader, install TWRP and get you rooted. (So, some phones like H931 need to take a side trip to Frankenstein thread, but other phones like H930 or H930DS don't need that, as they already have fastboot flash commands.)
Only in the Root Sticky I wrote, I warn H931/H933 takes "extra prep work" for custom ROMs and that all phones should be updated back to latest stock firmware prior to installing custom ROMs. If they have H931/H933, I leave it to them to find out more, as I don't want to scare them off.
Someone once mentioned doing something like this guy did on Reddit thread for ALL V30 variants -- one bootloader unlock/root thread for each variant. US998, H931, H933, LS998, VS996, H930, H930D, H930G, H930DS, AS998, H932 (both T-mobile and Puerto Rico), and that's not even mentioning the Korean variants! But that would be severe overkill and a lot of redundancy. The way WTF is designed, it can handle EVERY V30 on the planet (except for T-mobile H932), as long as you follow decision tree choices. There is a separate thread for T-mobile H932, because it's separate procedure involving a Linux boot disc and other stuff.
___
Oh, to the last guy asking questions in that Reddit thread? (duplicate questions) Tell him in Frankenstein conversion, he either didn't do a Master Reset after flashing to Nougat (not following all the steps) or he mistakenly flashed Oreo US998 first, probably thinking they didn't need to flash Nougat (not following all the steps). That's why his phone is bootlooping.

Thanks for all your hard work on this stuff ChazzMatt! This guy simply streamlined all the work you did specifically for the H931 variant, which was what I needed.
Thanks for the heads up about selling the US998 on Ebay... I hadn't really considered that, but will definitely look deeper into it now. So I could basically just flash a stock image for the US998 and call it good, yeah? Do most interested parties on Ebay prefer these phones remain rooted/unlocked in your (or anyone's) experience?
Thanks for your input all.

Vast majority prefer carrier unlocked phones, not necessary bootloader unlocked and rooted. With the scary bootloader unlock warning about "possible corruption" just best to re- lock bootloader before selling it.
Flash to US998 20H, then relock bootloader.

And that is exactly correct. It won't get updates as a 998 nor as a used-to-be 931. While yes, of course, some people will understand that and know how to apply an update, **THE VAST MAJORITY** of buyers WILL NOT.
Given that limitation, be sure you state that specifically when selling it. As Dinou says, ebay will be on yer butt otherwise.

No they won't report the seller.
None of the LS998 to US998 sold on eBay all the time get OTA updates.
All the US998 V30+ being sold by dealers are former LS998.
No one is reported. The dealer has 99.9 approval rating.
That's the only way to carrier unlock an LS998. I bought one US998 new in box from Wal-Mart, and it's former LS998 converted to US998.
Same with H931.
And it's the only way you're going to be able to sell it. I mean, you can convert to VS996 or H933, but same thing. US998 is the best choice.

If you want to sell it on eBay you have to explain that the phone is really a H931 running US998 firmware. If not, the buyer can just return the phone for a full refund after he finds out the phone isn't a US998 which will be easy since H931 has a AT&T logo.
You'd have to pay for the return shipping, eat the original shipping cost, and still have to pay eBay fees...

Like I've said... if the buyer finds out that the phone is not a real US998 and wants to return it then the seller has to cover return shipping and issue a full refund.
If not, the buyer can file a dispute stating item not as described and the seller will be forced to take it back...
The simplest answer to all this is of course simple: be honest in the ad, list every piece of relevant information and that way if there's any kind of claim for any reason other than "It's dead on arrival, Jim..." protects you (or whoever) as the seller.
It can't be stressed enough really to put ALL the relevant info in the ad, be 100% honest about everything:
- be honest that's its originally an AT&T H931
- be honest that the bootloader was unlocked and that message will appear each time the device is powered on from a cold start
- be honest that it has a clean IMEI with no leins/not reported stolen/not reported lost (but don't provide the IMEI directly, that can be provided in a PM if necessary using eBay's message system if a potential buyer wants it)
- be honest that it was converted to becoming a US Cellular US998 in every respect except for it being a true US998 hardware-wise
- be honest that it will not get OTA updates for future releases of Android (if they'd come out) and might not get security fixes or patches either because of that conversion
- be honest and say the condition and mention every single scratch or scuff or mark on it, take plenty of decent pics, show the Settings page, etc
- be honest about what's included
- be honest and just flat out say "If you decide to make this purchase, you do so understanding everything that's been stated in this ad and accept this prior to the purchase, after which there will be no refunds except for the item being literally DOA and non-functional" or words to that effect and clearly state "SOLD AS-IS" in the ad listing at least once and not buried someplace a the very bottom or whatever
If you don't do anything that can be perceived as being deceptive then eBay (and whatever payment processing service you use) will more than likely side with you, the seller, should an issue arise - if it's truly DOA for whatever reason you're going to have to issue a refund regardless, but I don't think that most people would damage or break something intentionally just to get that refund. This basic idea of being honest about it to as many degrees as you possibly can ensures that you'll only be selling to someone that really understands what it is and if they don't, your listing told them ahead of time so that responsibility is now not on you for them being ignorant.
You can't really do much more than this, so either get to it and sell it on eBay with these kinds of guidelines or keep it and maybe sell it locally, either way, good luck.

Flashing the stock h931 rom will get you close but the BL will still be unlocked(but there is no message on bootup). It has the stock att boot animation.
Notes:
It wipes your internal storage when flashing.
OTA will no longer work.

The AT&T H931 does not have a CDMA radio in it, neither does the H933 (the Rogers Wireless aka Canadian version) so no, they're not the same as the actual US998 hardware which does have both CDMA and GSM radios in it. As my sig clearly states, I have an H931 converted to a US998 and I can't use it with Sprint or Verizon since it doesn't have a CDMA radio in it so, no, they're not all the exact same hardware.
The VS996 is designed to work with Verizon which is a CDMA carrier so that one does have a CDMA radio in it but it offers slightly different LTE band coverage (some of the other bands for AT&T and T-Mobile are covered as roaming bands).
Each model has something different from the others based on what the carriers tell LG to do with them at the factory, which is why I said what I said.
The T-Mobile LG V30 H932 is the only one that has hardware support for LTE band 71 too so, again, something different for every model.
You can't go wrong with being honest -- except you may not get the sale on eBay, where dozens other V30s are listed as New or Mint, even though we all know they're Frankenphones. Those sellers are probably willing to absorb a few returns because they bought them by the truckload for $30 each.
Why not just just flash US998 KDZ and relock the bootloader, then see if OnePlus will accept the trade-in? That's what you wanted originally, right?
They're looking for a sale, so they're motivated. And if they DON'T accept the trade-in, then you can worry about selling it on eBay.
That's really what I assumed would be your takeaway from my original reply (post #2).

Like I've said... if the buyer finds out that the phone is not a real US998 and wants to return it then the seller has to cover return shipping and issue a full refund.
If not, the buyer can file a dispute stating item not as described and the seller will be forced to take it back...

Like I've said, former LS998 are sold every day on eBay as US998 BECAUSE THEY NOW ARE US998 and it's not an issue.

You DO have CDMA radio if you converted your H931 to US998. You can't use it on Sprint and Verizon because neither will take an H931 -- NOT because your NOW-US998 doesn't have CDMA.
Sprint won't even take US998 as they only take their own branded LS998 (which is why you have to activate LS998 on Sprint BEFORE Frankenstein, bootloader unlock and root).
Verizon conversely looks only at IMEI, and they see it as H931 even if it's now US998 with CDMA. Be interesting to see what happens when Verizon DROPS CDMA end of this year!

It was converted to Open Market US998. DON'T call it "U.S. Cellular" US998. It's NOT. Many U.S. Cellular phones are carrier locked, and U.S. Cellular only takes phones they sell -- so if a U.S. Cellular customer bought it they would be disappointed.
NO, the bootloader unlock warning will not appear because he's going to lock it back.
Yes, clearly state no refunds.

Thank you for bringing some clarity to the discussion.
Yes, relock the bootloader and try the trade in. OnePlus isn't going to look at it that carefully, except to verify it's working. They're immediately going to turn around and WHOLESALE to an eBay dealer -- WHO WILL SELL IT ON EBAY.
The eBay dealer will probably swap out the back panel to get rid of the AT&T logo. It'll be sold as US998, which is what it is.

H931 does have CDMA radio... I don't know where you are getting your information from... but like I've said... the four models I listed all have the exact same hardware...
You are confusing hardware compatibility with carrier policy...
I didn't say anything about H932...

How do you know it's not an issue? How do you know what is happening between the buyers and sellers on eBay? How do you know how many phones were returned... partial refunds given... or disputes filed? You don't...

Actually... you are acting like you've never done anything on eBay... if you sell a crossflashed phone and you don't state it's crossflashed... you'd have 0% chance of winning the dispute... absolutely 0%...
