Whatsapp have an annoying feature now - they show a notification saying that it is waiting for WIFI to backup. I wouldn't mind it so much, except I only have WIFI when I get home from work in the evening, so every time I unlock my phone I see a Whatsapp notification and I think it's a message.
The only option I see right now is to disable backup completely, or at least have it backup every week/month or so, but I don't want to do any of that.
I do have the option to disable notifications for Whatsapp completely if I long press the notification (but obviously I don't want to do that, as it will not show notifications when I receive messages).
Any suggestions? I'm using 7.0. Thanks!

This notification shows also to me, with the only difference that I'm under Wi-Fi and I don't know why the backup doesn't start automatically...
I've been getting this for around 2 months now and I don't know why, or how to fix it.
Every morning I wake up I see this notification from Whatsapp: Backup paused, waiting for WiFi.
I have tried the following:
- Change "back up over" from "WiFi only" to "WiFi or Cellular".
- Uninstalled and wiped cache/data and reinstalled Whatsapp.
with no success.
Whatsapp chat notifications arrive to my phone just fine with the screen off, no delay. I have no quiet hours set or anything like that.

Same thing here. Looking to disable them, entirely if possible. I have OP's issue as well. Probably going to just disable backups. Maybe we could use another app for backup and disable it in WhatsApp.

In backup settings, just select ' Never'.
I have a similar but slightly different situation:
I prefer to disable WiFi and use mobile data all the time to save battery life (unless I need a lot of bandwidth for downloading apps or something) - normal mobile data plans in my country don't have data caps and you don't pay extra for using data.
So, with my phone on mobile data only, I have WhatsApp set to back up the data using either WiFi or mobile data. It invariably fails to do so every night around 4:20 am, "waiting for network" (don't know the exact English wording since my UI is not in that language).
The way I can reliably get WhatsApp to start backing up the data (that one time) is to momentarily disable mobile data and then re-enabling it. It's still a nuisance, though.
Go into whatsapp settings. , Then click on ...
Chats,*
chats backup,*
Backup google drive.
Change to, only when I tap.
There should also be a back up attempting bar that you can close out to get rid of the notification message. If it's not there then exit and return to that settings screen to see if it shows back up.

That is not fixing the issue.
It only disables your atomatic backup.
What If I want backup to run without tapping?
whatsapp needs google drive permissions
Had the same problem and have uncovered the root cause (for me anyway).
I was getting the "waiting for Wifi connection" to backup. I had auto-sync on, for weekly backup. And the notification would appear even if I was connected to wifi. Backup wasn't occurring. Annoying.
The problem was that whatsapp didn't have permission to write to my google account. But whatsapp didn't tell me this, it just gave the wifi error.
So you need to go to security settings on your google account, then see if whatapp has permission under "third party apps with account access".
In your phone, go to your whatsapp menu settings, chat backup and then press backup (i.e., now). Whatsapp will then ask for the appropriate permissions. It's weird that it doesn't ask for the permissions when attempting auto-backup.
This is quite old but I recently had the problem with "finished backup" and the only thing that worked out was going to notifications of the app in settings and turning off the backup notification category.

I just started having the same problem, fixed the same way. I immediately toggled the setting back on in the hope that the next time that notification comes up, they'll have fixed the bug.

Hemmm wifi drains WAY less battery than mobile data (you have an access point next to you, not a phone cell at kilometers of distance). You should make the inverse when you have a Wifi.
Back in-topic, I just switched to Android 12 and I get the "Backup done" notification everyday

My installed application list:
http://www.appbrain.com/user/samjuan
I have exchange, yahoo and hotmail, of which only exchange is set to push from 8 to 5 and then everything else is set to manual.
Gmail and all other services (whatsapp, tango, viber... etc) are set to push all the time.
Brightness is set to auto and I have a jawbone era Bluetooth headset that is connected all the time.
I am running on official i9100JPKF3 with I9100XXKF1 as the modem.
I just want your advice and opinion and to share my application list and experience.
I would be very thankful and appreciative if you turn around and walk away if you think I shouldn't have opened a new battery thread and/or my post wasnt up to your standards.
Thank you in advance.

1 hour 12 min screen time and so little battery left is a bit less than normal. I get around 4 hours of screen time before my battery dies.
There seems to be a huge amount of time where the screen is not on but the phone is wide awake, which means high battery consumption. If you're talking on the phone or listening to music at these times when the screen is on, then it's normal. If not, then there is some app or widget keeping the device awake.
try freezing "wifi sharing" as well. Not sure if that helps but i see alot of wifi battery use.
Thank you for your reply.
In the case of calls, it is only 30 min as indicated by the pic above.
I do not listen to music on my phone at all, neither I have many widgets, the only widgets I have are: Modern Clock, Google Search, Accuweather.com widget set to refresh every 3 hours, Month widget.
also I have the windy weather live wallpaper and it is set to refresh every 1 hour.
So you mean that is not normal for stock configuration?

I am not rooted and do not wish to TBH.
however, I try to be connected to wifi for data as much as possible, as I have read somewhere that it does have better effect on battery than cellular data connection, that is why you see a lot of wifi.
One question please. How do you get the first screenshot ?
I can see wifi activity that suppose you have wifi enable all the time, is that right? As you can read, wifi sharing and other stuff around are battery consumers. You can read litening thread about this.
Other question, did you disable fast dormancy *#*#9900#*#* ?
And samsung apps disable notification even in wifi mode...

Screenshot: Settings --> Applications --> Battery usage --> Click on the upper graph, to take the screenshot (in case this is what you are asking about) hold home then immediately click the power button.
I have read about process freeze and other root activities, which I am not interested in.
I have also read that fast dormancy has no real effect on battery life, have you tried it yourself and did it work effectively? what was the difference in your case?
Thank you for the samsung apps thing, I will try that and see.
Just to clarify, I am not complaining about battery life or anything, I am just sharing my experience to make sure that whether this is normal or I am missing out on anything.
Regarding the fast dormancy stuff, I have read this thread and got contradicting results that confused me (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111581&page=4) I did have the "data network stuck" problem, but after factory format and with a little over 44 hours of uptime, I still didn't face it. I am afraid it is going to pop up again if I alter this setting. besides, fast dormancy is a network feature, I will check with my provider to see if they support it or not, although I get H+ in most of the locations I have been in while using data.
Has anybody confirmed that wifi sharing is the culprit, or even Ms exchange emails?

I think everyone was seeing wifi sharing showing up quite a bit under battery usage stats. It was using a good amount of battery on mine.
Wifi sharing, is there a way to disable it without root?
On another note, charging from 5% to full charge takes almost 3 hours and 45 minutes, is this normal?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
@OP- If you haven't already done then calibrate your battery with Battery Calibration app by Nema from Market.
For me it worked pretty well.
Regards.
I am using litening ROM since v1.1
When version 1.5 was delivered, litepro rollbacked the delivery during one day or two days. Because, I was using v1.4, modem ke7 was the version I used and I tried to flash only the modem version to upgrade to the latest one (kf2). The benefit was important not only with data up but also when I put my phone in plane mode. But, I saw also a great improvement when I flashed the version 1.5 of litening with wifi sharing removed.
I don't really use data all day but for me with many samsung apps freezed with titanium backup (social, game, ... Hub). I have a great improvement with this rom. I will try to activate data and wifi all day tomorrow to see the battery impact.
without any custom roms, root related activities or any other warranty voiding stuff, do you guys still think that my battery utilization is abnormal with the amount of usage I have?
I have been experimenting with battery life and different scenarios, uninstalled Facebook, Twitter, Skype, fring and nimbuzz... However battery life didn't increase.
So decided to switch off data completely, and only work on wireless whenever available.
Looking at the screenshots below, i still see awake times with screen off, especially in the last periods...
My question is, how can I check what is keeping the phone "awake" while screen is off?
Thank you in advance.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You can check it with Watchdog but it will also drain some battery. So use ATK, you won't have a non-synchronized Awake and Screen On bar.
Regards.

Ms-exchange is the one for me... I then switched to "Enhanced email" and it had fixed battery life quite good..
download CPU SPY from the market and see if your phone is going into deep sleep.
reset the timers, then one by one, change variables until you find the culprit.
I think I found my culprit. Here check this out. Y is maps waking my phone 135 times?! It's only spouse to be doing it 1 time every 3 hrs. And that's for HTC clock. Any ideas on what would keep trying to get my location? the only sync i have set up is weather for the htc clock. but that updates every 3 hrs. google now is turned off, and so are all the setting in the maps app its self. however i do have both stand alone and google location services checked in location settings under settings. but not verizon. screen on time was about 1 hr. but data was turned off, and i dident touch my phone all day.

It appears you have Latitude enabled... disable it and your battery usage should drop significantly. Go into Maps - Settings - Location Settings and make sure Location Reporting is set to "Do not update your location" and all other options in this area are toggled off. Otherwise your location is constantly being reported back to Google for Latitude services, causing it to never being able to sleep properly.

95% of the time, its fine. Every once in awhile though, some service that Maps runs in the background (Latitude maybe?) seems to lock up and I find Maps destroying my battery. Usually I just restart my phone and it fixes it again.

alright i think i figured it out.
maps works in conjunction with google location service.
if i look aty power settings in settings, i fid that maps is using between 4- 18% mostly in the double digits. now if i go to running in the apps section, it shows that maps and google services r running. if i click maps, it shows google location service, and maps. if i click on google services, it shows network location service, google messaging service, and google services. now if i go into GSam, it shows me that maps is top of the list, and number of wake locks is 121, #of times waking device is 105. gps ussgae is 2m 9 seconds, and cpu is 19 secs.
now yesturday gps ussage was 20mins, and number of wakes was 160. i did nothing different but restart the phone. i have my data turned off most of the day. sine im in school, i only look at the screen like 10x at most during the 7hr day of school. if i look at time up it is- 18hrs, and time off is 8hrs. maps and google services have been running for 5+hrs and counting. so something is trying to track my location through the google service and i know its not htc flip clock, cause i only have that set to every 3 hrs. my location dosent change at all during the day sonce im in 1 building all day.
any ideas, or apps out there that will tell me what is trying to get my location even when data is off???? i neeeeeeeed this fixed. im getting horriblke battery life. from morning to out of school when my screen on time is 30 mins at most, i ned the school day at like 60-50% and for not using it at all, it should be at 90-75ish. i can barley go through a whole day without hitting the charger....
Yeah. So turn off GPS when you aren't using it. I only enable it when I am routing or using maps. Otherwise, it just wastes battery.

im almost positive it is google locations that making it wake up 160 times. i have the clock set to 3hrs to auto update. but keep in mind that its doing this even when data is turned off. so no 3g, 4g, E, etc.
in setting>power, it shows maps.
when i go into apps, then running tab in settings, then click maps, its telling me that the service is "Google Location Service" and the process is "maps"but then when it says location/description, it says com.android.apps.maps:GoogleLocationService.
when i click on google servises in running apps, the 2 services are Network Location service and Google messaging service. the processes are "Google Services" and the location/description is com.google.process.gapps
I have GPS enabled 24/7 and don't notice any problems except when Google Maps goes berserk and starts killing my battery. Normally, leaving GPS on doesn't drain the battery too much. I even have Backitude using GPS to update my location on Latitude every 10 minutes and it really doesn't hardly use any power at all...
im gonna download an app called startup auditor which auto kills everything, and ima see if it imporves....
Since you said you have frozen a number of apps, did you freeze HTC Location Service using Titanium. I don't know what it does, but someone else had suggested getting rid of it. Since I froze it, I have not noticed any negative feedback.
I don't know if it will make any difference to your situation. I am currently at 14 hours since last charge and have 130 wake locks in Maps. I also use GPS/Maps for an hour every morning while it tracks me using Cardio Trainer so I don't know if that would affect the wake locks.
I know I have heard people say this, but I just don't get that problem... I leave my GPS and all location services on all the time, use the Maps app daily (I deliver pizza part time) and never have battery drain issues. My personal phone is typically idle from 7:30 in the morning when I pull it off the charger until 5:00pm when I go to work, and I rarely use more than 1% per hour. The only app I have issues with is Facebook, and I just kill all tasks with ES Task Manager before blanking he screen after I use it (couple times per day). In my opinion. Facebook is one very misbehaving app, it reports your location and uses GPS even when you have all options turned off in it's settings, plus it will use it periodically if you have FB notifications turned on too. If you using the notifications, the Facebook app will even respawn by itself if you kill it, it's a very bad app! And with some battery monitors, any GPS activity will be reported as Maps! (GSam Battery Monitor is bad for this)
I downloaded an app called Notifications Off and it caused all kinds of problems before I uninstalled it not the least of which is that now when I get a call, I get don't get caller ID information nor do I get the option to answer. I have to manually go to the phone app to answer the incoming call. I'm at a loss on how to reinstate this feature.

Thanks for the help. Rebooting didn't help so I reinstalled the app and engaged all system notifications I thought would apply, and it still didn't work. So I turned all notifications on and it started working properly. I guess I'll just have to turn off notifications off that bother me as they occur.

Check your protected apps option in settings. The emui has setting that allow only protected apps from receiving or working in the background when the screen is off. I'm running cm 13 so I can't remember how to get there. But its in the settings and its called protected apps. Check to see if those apps you use are turned off. If they are that's probably why.

Also, this started to happen after the upgrade to Marshmallow+EMUI 4, I did not have this problem with the Lollipop + EMUI 3.1 factory software.
Having trouble when phone has been in sleep for half hour or more. Notifications coming through wifi are not working. I've being trying to solve it since yesterday but I'm not having any luck.
I've made sure the apps in question are on auto start in permissions, turned off ultra long standby mode in battery power management settings and set the apps to be exempt from cleaning in app protection settings and even turned off 'align wakeup' in power management, and of course wifi is set always on.
Phone is x820 model running fresh china 17S rom, to which i manually installed google play, gmail, bbm apps.. bbm and gmail are the apps in question are the ones not getting notifications, even though phone can receive an sms messages no problem, weirdly even receiving an sms doesnt spring the other notifications to work, also when turning the screen back on notifications still don't come for up to ten minutes even though wifi is working fine.
Any help would be really apreciated, thanks

Yeah it's pretty odd. Maybe the trying the Indian rom is the solution.
Generally the settings for notifications should be done in this way:
1. Check that notifications for the desired apps are ON under the menu Settings - Notification Management
2. Allow the apps to start automatically under the menu Settings - Permissions - You have allowed ... apps to auto launch
3. Disable the auto cleaning of the apps under Phone manager - Power Saving Management - App protection
I have Lock-Screen cleanup unchecked, Ultra-Long standby during sleep checked, Align wakeup checked, Clock night-alignment mode checked.
In this way I have no problems with notifications with whatsapp, viber, e-mail (I'm using yahoo mail with the stock email app), fb messenger, Facebook.
If the above are done and stil there are no notifications, then check in the app itself. The last but not least, reflash the firmware.

If your data will work all the time, then the battery will be drained fast. The phone connects from time to time to the Internet and then you'll get the necessary notifications. I cannot tell you how often is this, but you can decrease the time by deselecting Align Wakeup in Power Saving Management.
I am not sure that the way described above is correct, so if someone knows differently, please state.
edit.. thought i found a workaround, but I jumped the gun. Still trying to work this out.
I'm giving up, thinking about sending phone back under the reason of not fit for purpose
Maybe we need to try cuoco rom.
I've installed gapps by myself so maybe they is a bug with it
I've been testing WhatsApp all night, checking every hour if a message will get through and so far it has.... but i bet as soon as i post this it will stop working, that's the luck i seem to have lol
oddly on 19S rom WhatsApp is automatically set up to lock itself in memory, with the lock sign in recents screen, and autostart enabled in permissions
edit, put the phone in airplane mode while i slept, turned airplane mode off and now whatsapp won't get notifications even with the screen on unless i open WhatsAppl
I'm sure it shouldn't be this hard
