Samsung s9 plus overheating - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

I've got the Exynos model of the s9+ and it appears to get pretty hot. Almost uncomfortable at times.. this a long with battery drain when I've got barely any apps installed is pretty poor. Note 8 never had these issues.. anyone else experiencing this?

Pretty common for a samsung phone why are you surprised

This is NOT normal. Install aida64 or any monitorung software and check your temps. You may have a faulty unit! My temps right now on exynox are 34.5 cpu and 34.6 battery with normal usage

Is this normal?

Samsung haters out in force, eh? None of my Samsung phones has ever shown any overheating issues. Only phone I've owned that had overheating issues was LG.

Samsung's cooling and clock speed are just fine for normal use. Runnning Antutu is NOT normal phone use. Why slow down the phone for everyone else just to run some silly benchmark.

I'd like my phone to be stable at all times, in any situation, especially at this price point.
I also was shocked to see it since I never had it with any other device in the past.

My US unlocked s9+ never got uncomfortable hot/warm even under heavy task like gaming. And, during normal use like- calling, texting, chating, browsing it never got any hot/warm. Just normal. During 16 to 24 hrs of usage- i got avg 5:30 to 7:30hrs of screen on time

This thread has been cleaned now lets get it on topic...

Same happened to me
Found out that the problem is with battery temprature..did a settings reset and now back to normal..seems to me it's like a bug with some settings

Update
Again battery temps hitting 37degrees during normal work such as whatsapp and youtupe...feels a little warm..asked samsung and told me to get a replacement..

Hi, same here. I have Exynos 9 plus model and all of a sudden, apparently without any reason, it starts to burn...yesterday it was at 42...I'm a Samsung lover I had S5, S7 edge, S8, Gears s3 but now i'm quite upset because I spent a lot of money for it and now I have to do a reset factory to see if I can solve the problem...I spoke with Samsung care and they told me it can depend on the many apps I've installed in it...maybe, he said, it depends on Nova Launcher! I can't belive that I've always had Nova Launcher and now in a 1000 Euro phone I cannot use it because of the heat! The heat it always starts on the camera zone on the back

Had this with the Snapdragons before but the Exynos usually cooler, have you checked to see if it has an app running in the background causing it

Yes, I've installed System panel and Gsam battery monitor but i can't see any app the in particular is going crazy. I can see that sometimes, without any specific use, is starts to burn untill 42 like yesterday; I restarted the phone but i keeped doing it. I've took off all the background working for many apps like spotify and others....Now i'm doing hard reset and I will see...

Maybe better, maybe...you know the heat was going along with a strong battery drain. So I will wait one day to decide if bring it to assistance or not...
By the way, it's not fair to spend time to try to fix problems in a 1000 euros and 3 weeks phone and eventually bring it to assistance and stay without it for one week...I need the telephone for work!

?? mine appears to be normal now...dunno what changed

For me the video enhancement feature in settings was causing increased temperature and also battery loss. Turn it off and it will surely increase the battery life.

Mine gets warm too, but randomly. It stays cool most of the time. But all of a sudden it would get warm in my pocket. Don't know what's going on.

S9 overheating
Hi. I have been having the same issue. I took my phone back and got a replacement due to it overheating but the new phone overheats as well. It overheats the most when I use the Screen Mirroring (Smart View) feature to watch movies on my Samsung smart TV. I am curious to find out if this happens to other S9 owners as well. While I am watching movies using this feature it gets so hot the phone will freeze up halfway through the movie . My kids were watching a movie and they said the screen displayed a message stating it overheated and then shut off. This doesn't happen with any other of my other Samsung phones. I was walking with the phone on my hip on day and it started to get hot as well. I am so disappointed. I really am a fan of these phones but this is a huge problem of course. Also my first phone was was trouble shooted, updated and reset but it still had the same issues unfortunately. I had to go through all those steps before getting a new replacement device.

I always charge my battery from dead flat, and this is the first time I have seen this happen, Which is why I was confussed...
are you charging with the computer? of so then do you usualy? or it could just be (like many phones) the charging state

Is it your first time get a thing like that? If its your first, then I think something wrong with your battery.
Low battery shows red indicator, it shouldnt be green just like the picture.

Hmm. You said you "always charge your battery from dead flat" before. That made it sound like you were doing it on purpose. But I digress.
Also, you should have no problems having the battery go the full day, (I can go the full day no problem - unless I'm constantly using the phone) unless you have something holding a wake lock. Have you installed BetterBatteryStats and monitored your wake locks to see if something is misbehaving?
Yes I have wakelock issues, But last time I tried to give starts thier was an issue with how I submitted it from the phone.
Anyway I sleep very little, and my phone is almost ALWAYS on the lack of a "proper job" means I don't have an 8 hour period of time where my phone isn't getting much use.
Do NOT worry its normal the triangle appeared because your battery has totally finished just Wait for 2 minutes and the triangle will disappear

Well, you should focus on solving those, and your battery life will improve.
Otherwise, my only other advice is to simply have more chargers readily available. I keep one at my office, a car charger each in my car and my girlfriend's car, and a couple at home.

I suppose I really should get it sorted.

That does look pretty bad. What is your details under display? (screen on time)
EDIT to add: actually, your screen looks like it might be on for a long time? (solid blue line under battery graph, starting under the "m" in 4h 56m 15s on battery text) If your screen on time is around 3.75 - 4 hours, this is normal.
To get a better gauge, post screenshots after you click both the battery graph above, (which will show signal, wifi, screen on, awake, and charging graphs as well) and the Screen entry. (to show screen on time)
Yea that screen shot is a week old, I will keep and eye on it.

chamonix's reply suggests you try a different modem, essentially. He's saying that in the dump you posted, RILJ held a 3.5 hour wake lock, which is unusually long. Could be that the modem you have flashed right now was struggling to find signal, so it was holding a wake lock.
Have you tried flashing a different modem yet?
Yea i've changed kernel/modems since then, Should I be selecting Other Partial Wakelocks Kernel wakelocks Alarms or Process?

Depends on what you want to look at.
But you're saying the screenshot above is a week old, and the BBS dump you linked to is clearly months old (from Feb 17), so maybe it's worth it to post more recent screen shots and dumps? Otherwise, can you honestly say you've not changed ANYTHING on your phone since either the screenshot or dumps were taken?
No one can tell you anything about how your phone is behaving today using information that is outdated.
The screenshot nothing has changed since then, I have changed things since the dump.
Well I want to kind out why my phone is awake when my it should be sleeping I supppose.
That screenshot their was a day when I woke up and used the device for an hour or so, and then I hadn't used the phone till about 12 hours later.
As you can see the phone kept waking up most of the day.
The info on Android OS for that screen shot was CPU Total 1h 6m, Kept Awake 4H 9m

International SIII Random Shutdowns, Overheating, and Drastic Battery Drops

Now, before you say anything, I know that issues similar to this one have been reported previously (I found 3 other threads, but there might be more). However, during troubleshooting of my friend's SIII, I found the following screenshot in battery usage (which was slightly disconcerting, to say the least). Nothing I've ever seen, on any of the phones I've ever worked in, was even remotely similar to this. No extraneous or abnormal usage was reported to me, and, possibly even more disconcerting, random shutdowns have been occurring every 15 minutes or so (which I would guess are from the overheating, but the phone didn't really seem that hot to me). I am left to guess this is either a battery issue or an active process forcing the processor too much, but I was left out of ideas, and am cautiously recommending a root and underclock if this persists. However, if you have any ideas of what might fix this (other than the rather drastic root + underclock), I'm all ears.
Thanks!

An app drain your battery.
Look at the picture.
No screen on but a lot awake.
If I was you, I root my phone, install titanium backup, backup my app and make a full wipes.
Or if you don't want to root, do a factory reset.
If it don't happen after this, it's due to an app

That was actually my first idea. It's not actually my phone, it's a friend's who asked me to do an impromptu IT session (I use an HTC Wildfire, barely running 4.0, which may be antiquated, but I'd hate to get rid of). I originally thought it was an app, but checking the actual battery usage list (which I'll try to post here as soon as I can get a hold of the phone again) I didn't see any standouts. Running processes turned up all the usual stuff, which is what puzzled me most.
I'll try to convince him to wipe, root, and underclock, but it's a lengthy process, and (understandably), probably a bit too much for someone who just started using Android, which inevitably means I'll need to do it.
Battery Usage List
Got a hold of the phone via email, this is the battery usage list. As I said, nothing really out of the ordinary.
Would a factory reset not be the first step?

Since it is your friend's phone and he is not ready for rooting stuff, then I suggest factory reset and if problems persist, send it back to Samsung for repair.

I can not believe I didn't think of that. Now I feel silly. I'll tell him about a factory reset, back up his stuff, and try. I'll report back if the issues persist.

The sudden battery drops on the usage graphs here look like a nasty device hang with high current consumption, possibly a near-short-circuit one, followed by a reboot. NOT like an app draining the battery. Also, no phone should ever overheat to the point it hangs/reboots under room temperatures, no mattet how badly a wrongbehaving app taxes the CPU/battery.
Sure, factory reset is worth a try, but do start seriously considering an RMA
Now I feel like a noob for not knowing what "RMA" means. But yeah, the drastic drop in the battery chart and the random shutdowns probably indicate something more serious than a misbehaving app. Let's hope not!
RMA - return merchandise authentication or something like that, i dont remeber the exact abbreviation. It means - use your warranty and return the device for repair/exchange.
Im also using the international model and Im having the same problem except I never have the issue of overheating or freezes. Its just that with minimal use the battery drains a lot faster than expected and wont even last 10hrs until i need to charge it again, I have wifi and all motion controls set to off and even rooted my device to use the Voodoo RRC Tool as recommended by a dev. Still its been a pain.

Now this does looks like a software issue.
I have similar issues. I got the phone over one week ago and it was great with battery life with some random freeze and blank screen when using Navigation with data connection turned off. However, the phone started to drain battery like crazy one week later: Completely drained within 8 hours, with only WIFI turned on but not connected and SIM card removed. This is after I factory reset the phone without installing any apps other then the stock apps. I also notice that it would not connect to any known WIFI APs that have signal strength below 75% (approx), warm to touch (probably caused by battery drain). It also won't charge from my laptop USB2.0 & USB3.0 ports or any other chargers except original Samsung charger that comes with the phone.
Has anyone else experience similar issues like mine? I don't think it's software related.

[Q] Battery problem related to the screen?

Hello there, I was hoping someone would help me on here with a problem I'm having with my S2
The batery barely lasts me 6 hours on fair-low usage and I have the screen always at 0-50% brightness, power saving mode enabled.. But always the same story with this phone. I bought it used, at first I thought the battery was dead so I bought a new one, still the same story is told by the battery life... I also noticed at first that the screen doesn't look that good in terms of colors and it looks dim, In the sun, even at 100% I can barely make what's on the screen, and in the battery manager, it's always the screen showing +45% usage of the battery... Which is barely used since I am mostly on and off on the phone. I'll provide some screenshots. Do you think replacing the screen would make the problem go away? Or is this just a S2 thing?

On the last screenshot the phone was left overnight and you see as I turn on the screen the battery just drops insanely fast with less than 2 Hours of on time...
Just an S2 thing, certainly with the battery usage at least. Screen on will always be your biggest battery drain. Plus you obviously played a lot of a very CPU/GPU intensive game; what do you expect - it's a phone, not a console. I mean, you lost 13% battery in just under 2 hrs with screen on half the time, that equates to around 4-4.5 hrs & that would be rather good given the game you were playing.
Nothing you've said strikes me as really sounding like the screen dying based on that (the battery usage), though on the other hand 'doesn't look that good in terms of colors and it looks dim' suggests there might be something going on with the screen.
You don't sound like you're experienced diagnosing electronics like this, and without the phone in front of them, nobody here is going to be able to give you an absolute answer, so your best bet is to take it to a phone repair shop you trust to give you an honest opinion - that is, they'll take a look at it & tell you the truth does the screen need replacing/not. I don't know about where you live, but some of these guys where I live I wouldn't trust to give me an honest answer (but obviously I wouldn't go to them in the first place), they'd replace the screen & pocket your money regardless.

On the screenshot that the game is being shown as a battery consumer, the phone was only on for 1h44 minutes and all I played was about 20 minutes on the bus, why would you take conclusions like that? The screen is still taking more energy than the game, tho making it so the game isn't the one to blame about this when I used my phone on the bus, having the lowest possible setting on the screen brightness. I'll do a test tomorrow, have the battery fully charged, wifi only and phone on airplane mode and only text from time to time and then at the end of the day or the battery, show a screenshot of how it went.
Actually, according to that screenshot, you played the game for more like almost 35 minutes, and you had the screen on for almost 53 minutes. And as I was saying, if you extrapolate those figures & the amount of battery you lost for that period of time, that is absolutely normal. If you kept that usage pattern & got ~5 hrs screen on with 3 hrs of game time, you'd be stoked with usage like that. If you used less or no game, you'd get even more screen on than that provided whatever you did with the screen on wasn't too CPU/GPU heavy.
No amount of your simplistic testing is going to tell you whether you have a problem with the screen or not. All your proposed test tomorrow will do is give you an indication of how much battery you go through with minimal usage & nothing else. It's a pointless exercise for the problem you say you're concerned about.
The only way you're going to know that one way or another if the screen is on the way out is to have someone who can diagnose hardware take a look at it & test it. Your 'tests' aren't going to do that.

Use the phone normally (as the screenshots look fine to me & MistahBungle has explained how they are fine), else, if your screen is dim and isn't showing colours properly, then it's likely a hardware fault of the screen/connections... hence get it looked at by a service centre/mobile shop.
Edit : have a look at my screenshot. Screen usage for me is over 60% over the same course of time as your second screenshot.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Got the same variant and was pretty impressed. Yesterday I had it 20 hours running until 2 percent. Sounds not much but I had 7 hours screen on time. Think this is pretty good imo.

This sounds not normal. It seems you got some apps running in the background and eating your battery. What apps are on your list at the top in settings?

No LTE? Are you in bad signal area? Weak signal is killer of batteries.

I don't find LTE is needed but I'm in a pretty good signal area most times.
You think I should go to a Samsung service center ?
I doubt a different device will be any different. Unless the phone is acting up, chances are it's an app or setting causing the trouble. Screen brightness, under location settings, make sure scan BTW and WiFi are turned off, those have been big ones for me in the past. Right now I'm testing adguard which runs VPN on your phone to block ads and it's hitting my battery pretty hard, but with fast charging and big battery, I'm living with it for now.

Also, you might want to set data settings to default and let the phone pick the strongest signal.

Do a factory reset and clear cache from recovery a couple of times, i would recommend a reflash. I'm a sec at best buy.
Temped to return it..
I've a UK version and I've been not really happy with battery life.
First thing, I disables AOD,but that didn't change anything.
I did a factory reset and I did set it up as fresh new without any App and/or Account.
So the phone has Wifi+LTE on and after 21h18m I've 36% left with 1h25m SoT done with Web Browsing.
The settings are standard, no sync, no AOD, Edge night mode.
Should I return the phone?
Thanks for advice
very impressed with the battery life, took it off charge yesterday around 9pm, been on all day on 4g, great 7 hours screen on time , this with auto brightness, 4 emails syncing

Battery Drain

Hi Guys!
Following Question. I got myself a new Galaxy Tab S3 and realized somehow, that i got a massiv Battery Drain. For examlple today after i finished charging i didnt used it for couple of hours and leaved it idle and locked. After 2 or maybe 3 hours i saw that the battery lost abt 6 or 7 percent. Does anyone saw some similar problem? I already tried wiping the cache.
What should i do in that case?

Battery life is great as far as SOT, stupid tablet just doesn't enter sleep unless you turn off wifi. Hopefully a future update will come out that fixes this or we'll see some custom roms that have this issue resolved.

But in actual use, I could be annotating a PDF file with the pen and it seems to drop really fast while the screen is on!

Odd. I use my tablet for media consumption and I have to charge my tablet every week & a half. I usually have it streaming videos around 75 minutes 5 to 6 days a week, so the really quick rough math is around 8 or so hours of SOT.

For me too when i use my tablet for writing, but i guess it's the digitizer
I experience large battery drain by wifi in sleep as well. After two/three days of idle tablet won't even power up until I plug it into the charger. Turning wifi off before putting tablet to sleep helps, but's really annoying. One would expect Samsung would fix this ASAP.
I take my earlier comment back, aqdc still has the wifi drain bug, very annoying. Also, the new ipad pro makes this look like a joke. We need an 8895 in this tab not useless qualcomm chips.
Latest AQF3 still has the bug, I guess it's time to give up on this tablet and just use my S8+ for everything. Samsung support thread in case in anyone wants to vent:

Tried to find the root cause using wakelock detector and greenify, didn't yield much. The problem is likely at the system firmware/wifi driver level. I suggest all folks start returning their S3s , teach Samsung a lesson.
AQF5 build came out today for Korea, trying that now. The way they are increasing the build numbers, hopefully they are actually fixing something. Interestingly this had a modem file too though the SM-T820 is wifi only.

No dice still with AQF5 KOO firmware today, I officially give up. Likely a hw issue , only reason they have not addressed it across 6 firmware updates. Too bad since the tablet is very decent otherwise. Unlikely this will ever get fixed at this point since this is not a Note 7 type headline grabber. Time to find an used S2 to replace the one I sold or wait on something else.My S3 is going back tomorrow.
SOLUTION for SAMSUNG S3 TAB
go to SETTINGS - CONNECTIONS - in the right top corner click on ADVANCED. click on to "KEEP WIFI ON DURING SLEEP" and select NEVER.
I was pulling my hair out as my tablet was running out of battery unless I manually switched off wifi. Hope this helps.

Oled display`s use a huge amount of power when showing white/light screens, oled is best for video(supposedly use less power than lcd)
Buy an lcd display tablet if you do a lot of writing/drawing.
