International SIII Random Shutdowns, Overheating, and Drastic Battery Drops - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now, before you say anything, I know that issues similar to this one have been reported previously (I found 3 other threads, but there might be more). However, during troubleshooting of my friend's SIII, I found the following screenshot in battery usage (which was slightly disconcerting, to say the least). Nothing I've ever seen, on any of the phones I've ever worked in, was even remotely similar to this. No extraneous or abnormal usage was reported to me, and, possibly even more disconcerting, random shutdowns have been occurring every 15 minutes or so (which I would guess are from the overheating, but the phone didn't really seem that hot to me). I am left to guess this is either a battery issue or an active process forcing the processor too much, but I was left out of ideas, and am cautiously recommending a root and underclock if this persists. However, if you have any ideas of what might fix this (other than the rather drastic root + underclock), I'm all ears.
Thanks!

An app drain your battery.
Look at the picture.
No screen on but a lot awake.
If I was you, I root my phone, install titanium backup, backup my app and make a full wipes.
Or if you don't want to root, do a factory reset.
If it don't happen after this, it's due to an app

That was actually my first idea. It's not actually my phone, it's a friend's who asked me to do an impromptu IT session (I use an HTC Wildfire, barely running 4.0, which may be antiquated, but I'd hate to get rid of). I originally thought it was an app, but checking the actual battery usage list (which I'll try to post here as soon as I can get a hold of the phone again) I didn't see any standouts. Running processes turned up all the usual stuff, which is what puzzled me most.
I'll try to convince him to wipe, root, and underclock, but it's a lengthy process, and (understandably), probably a bit too much for someone who just started using Android, which inevitably means I'll need to do it.

Battery Usage List
Got a hold of the phone via email, this is the battery usage list. As I said, nothing really out of the ordinary.

Would a factory reset not be the first step?

Since it is your friend's phone and he is not ready for rooting stuff, then I suggest factory reset and if problems persist, send it back to Samsung for repair.

I can not believe I didn't think of that. Now I feel silly. I'll tell him about a factory reset, back up his stuff, and try. I'll report back if the issues persist.
Thanks a million!

Lol, spend to much time on xda and it happens to is all. Good luck on fixing your friends phone.

The sudden battery drops on the usage graphs here look like a nasty device hang with high current consumption, possibly a near-short-circuit one, followed by a reboot. NOT like an app draining the battery. Also, no phone should ever overheat to the point it hangs/reboots under room temperatures, no mattet how badly a wrongbehaving app taxes the CPU/battery.
Sure, factory reset is worth a try, but do start seriously considering an RMA

Now I feel like a noob for not knowing what "RMA" means. But yeah, the drastic drop in the battery chart and the random shutdowns probably indicate something more serious than a misbehaving app. Let's hope not!

RMA - return merchandise authentication or something like that, i dont remeber the exact abbreviation. It means - use your warranty and return the device for repair/exchange.

Im also using the international model and Im having the same problem except I never have the issue of overheating or freezes. Its just that with minimal use the battery drains a lot faster than expected and wont even last 10hrs until i need to charge it again, I have wifi and all motion controls set to off and even rooted my device to use the Voodoo RRC Tool as recommended by a dev. Still its been a pain.

Now this does looks like a software issue.

I have similar issues. I got the phone over one week ago and it was great with battery life with some random freeze and blank screen when using Navigation with data connection turned off. However, the phone started to drain battery like crazy one week later: Completely drained within 8 hours, with only WIFI turned on but not connected and SIM card removed. This is after I factory reset the phone without installing any apps other then the stock apps. I also notice that it would not connect to any known WIFI APs that have signal strength below 75% (approx), warm to touch (probably caused by battery drain). It also won't charge from my laptop USB2.0 & USB3.0 ports or any other chargers except original Samsung charger that comes with the phone.
Has anyone else experience similar issues like mine? I don't think it's software related.

You may need to calibrate the battery as this really should not be happening, it will always drop a bit after rebooting but not too much.

You can safely ignore this incorrect advice.
If you notice a sudden drop like that, just forget about it and carry on enjoying your phone. You'll then notice a gradual increase in reported battery level.
Just switch off your mobile...and take off the battery for 5 min and put it back...and reboot...this is what i have done...when it has sleep issues...and...the problems gone...
Same problem with me

I'd just like to say you're both right. Calibrating your battery will help, but if this does happen again just ignore it. Your battery level will go back up. Just find the nearest iFan and tell them your phone charges itself

I'd love to hear how you calibrated your battery, considering such a thing is not possible on this phone.
Oh, and so you know, if you're going to post incorrect information, of course I'm going to correct you (that's not trolling btw). So what if we've bumped into each other twice in two days, if you're going to post nonsense like this, of course I'm going to respond

No, what you are saying is not correct. If you think you are correct, please show me the interface in the fuel gauge driver that is used to load history data into the fuel gauge chip.
I guarantee you that you will not find any such interface.
Our fuel gauge (MAX17042) does NOT need calibration - see the datasheet for its predecessor, the MAX17040. While the 17042 has some features that, if enabled, could require calibration cycles, these features are NOT enabled in any Gingerbread kernel, and at least one person received correspondence from Samsung that the GS2 does not even have the required hardware support for these extended features.
http://www.maxim-ic.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/6621
"Unlike traditional fuel gauges, the ModelGauge algorithm eliminates the need for battery relearn cycles and an external current-sense resistor"
There is no need to EVER perform any sort of battery calibration technique on our fuel gauge, other than this simple technique:
WAIT - your state of charge estimate will converge towards truth over time if anything throws it off. Rebooting on low battery is one of the few known cases where the estimate gets thrown off temporarily, and the tradeoff for having this one corner case is that we never need to calibrate our fuel gauge.
Edit: FYI, if you want to be pedantic - I am fully aware that the MAX17042 functionality is built into the MAX8997, just like the MAX17040 functionality of the Galaxy S series was built into the MAX8998. However it's well documented that this built-in function is identical to standalone 17040/17042 ICs.
bad news i'm affraid..
Hello chiefs,
I'm affraid i have some bad news for the OP and others who are facing this issue.
I had it as well (and still do from what the looks of it) and it got so bad eventually that i had to send it to the shop. they replaced the headset (donno what that has to do with anything) and it has worked for a while, until tonight. i have no clue what's going on but if this keeps up i'm gonna see if i can replace this for another phone. it's getting really annoying up in hea'..
Just my two cents..
This is another bothering issue that I find with GS2.
I would rather have a phone that needs callibration instead of a phone that doesn't but that shows "false" information regarding the battery charge.
greatly improved battery life with ICS
I updated to the leaked Samsung ICS LPH ROM and got as much as 21 hours of battery life! So give it a try or wait till Samsung officially releases ICS on 15the March.
I've searched everywhere and it seems there is no real fix for this. WTF.
And the most annoying thing is that when I'm below 15% (which I'm NOT), it won't let me use the stock camera app. Ugh.

Thanks, but I am on stock. I wound up scouring forums and such but got no answer so I just reset the phone.
I had this problem yesterday. Charged my phone to 100% and checked it after some usage today and every shows again. I don't know exactly what caused it nor what fixed it but at least I didn't have to reset
Did you install some apps from unknow sources nowadays? Think about it.. and after clean data from app manager, then unistall them. If you enough lucky maybe you find app which is caused batt stats issue..

Well that's good to know! If it occurs again, I will try this and see if it also works for me. However, I am glad I reset as I have learned some things along the way (SGS3 my first Android phone) and starting from scratch once more allowed me to tinker a bit and keep it leaner and get rid of some junk files

I only ever installed some third-party store for ROMs, can't recall the name, but it's a popular one and quite trusted as far as I was aware. That never caused any issues otherwise, but who knows! Since resetting last night, however, I've been wiser in which apps I now have installed, trying to keep the clutter away
I have a same problem like this with my Huawei P8 Lite 2017.
It's not rooted I am on stock Android and Emui.
Also now its showing 100 % Battery.
Sometimes when I use it to 0 % and the phone shut down I charge it again and it has in 40 seconds 30 % but I don't know why.
I think I hard reset my phone and backup my data.

Batteries don't like to be cycled. If you get false percentages or the battery dies or charges prematurely then you have a faulty battery.
Do not let li-po batteries discharge completely. They do not like it.

Battery Drain

Hi Guys!
Following Question. I got myself a new Galaxy Tab S3 and realized somehow, that i got a massiv Battery Drain. For examlple today after i finished charging i didnt used it for couple of hours and leaved it idle and locked. After 2 or maybe 3 hours i saw that the battery lost abt 6 or 7 percent. Does anyone saw some similar problem? I already tried wiping the cache.
What should i do in that case?

Odd. I use my tablet for media consumption and I have to charge my tablet every week & a half. I usually have it streaming videos around 75 minutes 5 to 6 days a week, so the really quick rough math is around 8 or so hours of SOT.

I experience large battery drain by wifi in sleep as well. After two/three days of idle tablet won't even power up until I plug it into the charger. Turning wifi off before putting tablet to sleep helps, but's really annoying. One would expect Samsung would fix this ASAP.
I take my earlier comment back, aqdc still has the wifi drain bug, very annoying. Also, the new ipad pro makes this look like a joke. We need an 8895 in this tab not useless qualcomm chips.
Latest AQF3 still has the bug, I guess it's time to give up on this tablet and just use my S8+ for everything. Samsung support thread in case in anyone wants to vent:

Tried to find the root cause using wakelock detector and greenify, didn't yield much. The problem is likely at the system firmware/wifi driver level. I suggest all folks start returning their S3s , teach Samsung a lesson.
AQF5 build came out today for Korea, trying that now. The way they are increasing the build numbers, hopefully they are actually fixing something. Interestingly this had a modem file too though the SM-T820 is wifi only.
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-s...3AFA163EE8F90B
No dice still with AQF5 KOO firmware today, I officially give up. Likely a hw issue , only reason they have not addressed it across 6 firmware updates. Too bad since the tablet is very decent otherwise. Unlikely this will ever get fixed at this point since this is not a Note 7 type headline grabber. Time to find an used S2 to replace the one I sold or wait on something else.My S3 is going back tomorrow.
SOLUTION for SAMSUNG S3 TAB
go to SETTINGS - CONNECTIONS - in the right top corner click on ADVANCED. click on to "KEEP WIFI ON DURING SLEEP" and select NEVER.
I was pulling my hair out as my tablet was running out of battery unless I manually switched off wifi. Hope this helps.

Hi, same here. I have Exynos 9 plus model and all of a sudden, apparently without any reason, it starts to burn...yesterday it was at 42...I'm a Samsung lover I had S5, S7 edge, S8, Gears s3 but now i'm quite upset because I spent a lot of money for it and now I have to do a reset factory to see if I can solve the problem...I spoke with Samsung care and they told me it can depend on the many apps I've installed in it...maybe, he said, it depends on Nova Launcher! I can't belive that I've always had Nova Launcher and now in a 1000 Euro phone I cannot use it because of the heat! The heat it always starts on the camera zone on the back
Had this with the Snapdragons before but the Exynos usually cooler, have you checked to see if it has an app running in the background causing it

For me the video enhancement feature in settings was causing increased temperature and also battery loss. Turn it off and it will surely increase the battery life.
Mine gets warm too, but randomly. It stays cool most of the time. But all of a sudden it would get warm in my pocket. Don't know what's going on.
S9 overheating
Hi. I have been having the same issue. I took my phone back and got a replacement due to it overheating but the new phone overheats as well. It overheats the most when I use the Screen Mirroring (Smart View) feature to watch movies on my Samsung smart TV. I am curious to find out if this happens to other S9 owners as well. While I am watching movies using this feature it gets so hot the phone will freeze up halfway through the movie . My kids were watching a movie and they said the screen displayed a message stating it overheated and then shut off. This doesn't happen with any other of my other Samsung phones. I was walking with the phone on my hip on day and it started to get hot as well. I am so disappointed. I really am a fan of these phones but this is a huge problem of course. Also my first phone was was trouble shooted, updated and reset but it still had the same issues unfortunately. I had to go through all those steps before getting a new replacement device.

Weird battery performance with the S21 (Exynos)

Hey, about two weeks ago I got myself a new S21. On the first day I was stoked, since I got 10hours of screen-on-time, a value that I never had before with any phone.
But the next day the illusion got destroyed, 3 hrs of screen on time. Something felt off, since I didn't even use the phone that much.
...long story short:
No matter how I use the phone (or not), the battery life seems to be the same. It doesn't make a difference if I use the phone or not, if anything, it feels like the battery drains faster when the device isn't turned on.
I tried to set ALL apps to "deep standby", turn all sensors off. I even turned all settings off which might cause anything to be running in the background, like tap to wake, aod, fingerprint, pick up detection and what not...
Still, I don't get more then 12-20h of total battery life. It doesn't make a difference if I use the phone or not. Even if I don't use the phone at all, after 20h it's dead. If I use it extensively, I still get up to 20h, but the screen-on-time gets significantly higher.
Obviously, if I was to run some stresstest all the time, the battery would drain faster, but that's not the point here. Im talking about normal use (Facebook, WhatsApp, light browsing).
Btw. It was running on the latest Android 12 build the whole time. And I just received an update today and no changes in behaviour.
Disable all power management!!!
Developer options>standby apps, all buckets should show as active otherwise power management is active. You can't turn it off here!
Android will manage its self without this junk.
Find the problem apps and deal with them on a case by case basis. Take out the trash; FB, WhatsApp, Twitter etc... ditch that malware!
Device Care>storage, clean now and clear Google play Services data(repeat as needed).
Clear system cache.
Google backup Transport and cloud apps are prime suspects especially screen off.
Try temporarily disabling Google play Services.
Use the factory load version of apps... update one at a time and observe for a battery hit.
Go back to Android 11 if possible.
Don't burn up the battery! Power down when hot.
Limit top charge to 80%, low discharge to 30%
Don't use in direct sunlight if so only briefly.
Keep brightness at 50% or less to save battery and display.
That comment is basically useless. You're telling me not to use my phone at all, since WhatsApp and Facebook are the only things I do anyway.
Also the thing about battery care is not relevant right now, I'm saying the device is basically new and the idle drain is an issue. How am I supposed to prevent the phone from overheating while idling?

yeah, right back at you
It's obviously a software bug somewhere, I'm just hoping that someone suffered the same and got a solution or hint. "Tips" like uninstalling WhatsApp are as useful as sending the phone to the trashbin and buying a new one.

Your tone is very rude for someone who is asking for help.
What you received as a support may not be fully giving you you wanted - but its free and showing the direction.
Sorry but it is as it is. His comment was useless and showed how he didn't even read my initial post, or didn't understand it. His generic reply about battery care doesn't help me either. And "try listening" also isn't the most polite way either
Nonetheless, I have discovered some articles which mentioned something about VoLTE drain. It should have been sorted out by previous updates and apparently doesn't even concern all devices. But trying is free, right?
I have disabled VoLTE and enabled all battery savers. I got 10h of screen on time and about 36h of total time, which is great! (for a S21)
Next step will be verifying the results by turning everything on again, except VoLTE. (note: I had tested the same scenario before, only with VoLTE on.)

I did answer your question but you decided to get ignorant.
There likely is no one specific easy fix for your problem. I spent many hours optimizing my device... far longer then you.
When the battery life dies again and/or you get erratic behavior don't say I didn't try to warn you.
If you're too lazy to troubleshoot your own device, don't be crying and insulting others trying to show you where you might start.
I don't have battery issues...
