Will downgrading to 6.0.1 with a TWRP backup of phone brick the phone? (I ask because downgrading bootloader has been proven to brick phone)
Thanks!
If you downgrade to 6.0.1 with a TWRP backup, it may not brick your device, since the TWRP backup should only restore the system, kernel and not affect your bootloader.
However, because your bootloader is not downgraded to 6.0.1 too (and you generally cannot downgrade bootloaders), you have a mismatched firmware - you have a newer bootloader but older system. It appears that taking OTA updates for older system firmware, when you have a newer bootloader than your system, can brick your device - the old OTA update appears to overwrite your newer bootloader and lead to a brick. OTA updates appear to only check if your system is the right build and assume the bootloader is the correct build, which if you've downgraded is not the case.
So if you do downgrade, please do not use OTA updates. If you must update, only use stock firmware to update your device. It is not the downgrading that bricks a device, it's downgrading and then using OTA updates in most cases that bricks devices. The only cases I've seen where downgrading and then using OTA updates has not bricked devices is when the user has rolled back to the firmware directly preceding their current latest firmware.

Ok so im not new to the rooting scene but am new to the flashing scene. I know a good jist of it but cant seam to figure out the whole firmware process.
I want to install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699616
I am currently running 4.4.2 with 1.58.xx firmware unlocked S-OFF and rooted. and this ROM requires 2.22.1540.4
Now I have found the 2.22.1540.4 firmware and know that i have to relock my bootloader and such but my phone says my ID is CWS__001 and i cant find any with that.
Also if i flash the newest 2.23.xx firmware will i still be able to flash any rom using older firmware versions?
And last question say i am flashing a new firmware and it screws up, since my custom recovery gets removed how do i flash my nandroid backup.
also if successfully flash the new firmware am i able to flash my old backup to restore to a old firmware or do i need to reflash the old firmware first.
sorry for so many questions i just dont want to blow up my phone due to stupid mistakes.
EDIT: so I think i managed to update my firmware. In bootloader it shows 2.22.1540.3 under os but in the phone settings it still says 4.4.2 and 1.58.xxx. I am assuming all i need is a updated firmware to run the mods and not a updated software? correct me if im wrong.
What exactly did you flash (link it if you can)? I think you are confusing software (OS or ROM) with firmware. Firmware as its mostly commonly discussed here (updating to run 2.xx based ROMs) refers to the hboot, radio, recovery, and other modules (media, WiFi, Bluetooth and more) deployed with an RUU or OTA. You have only flashed firmware if you installed an RUU/OTA or manually flashed it with fastboot.

Yes, 2.23 firmware will work as well. But again, make sure you are talking about the right thing (firmware versus software/OS).
My phone is currently Rooted with TWRP installed, and im running gpe 4.4.4 stock rooted rom from the android development forums. Now, considering im s-on and have no computer at home at the moment, I was trying to figure out a way to update my firmware so that i can test out and flash one of these new lollipop roms. If I flash using twrp an at&t stock rom such as "Stock AT&T 1.58 Deodexed" from the AT&T forum,
1. Will I receive an OTA from at&T
2. Is it safe to accept the OTA
3. Will it update the firmware properly, so that i may flash a lollipop firmware.
My guess is that the answer to #2 will probably be a no. My phone is originally an at&t device btw.
Thanks for any help.
Most OTA's will fail simply cause you have a custom recovery.
If you can afford $25 just gain S-OFF using "Sunshine"
You need to be on stock ROM and stock recovery to install an OTA. Root is okay, and bootloader unlocked is okay ("okay" meaning the OTA will install, but you will lose root).
The stock ROM is normally odexed, so I don't think the deodexed will qualify as "stock" enough to allow the OTA to install (I'm thinking NO). The fastest way to return to stock ROM and recovery is probably by RUU (relock bootloader required for RUU).
Not sure what you mean by "safe" but as long as you meet the above conditions you will be able to receive and install OTAs. You will lose root as mentioned (but can easily just re-install custom recovery and root again). And your data should remain intact; although you should always backup important personal data, anyway.
But be aware there is currently no AT&T OTA that will update you to the current (3.x) firmware required for LP custom ROMs. The OTA for 4.4.4 is rumored for Dec. 29, but its already been delayed twice.
If you don't want to s-off, you will have to wait until 4.4.4 rolls out (to update the firmware). Or just s-off by sunshine and be done with it.
Can I downgrade 5.3.1.1 to 4 5.3 root and upgrade to 5.3.1 or will downgrading brick the device?
No, downgrading will not brick the device. The worst you can get is a bootloop if you forget to flash back 5.x.x bootloaders after you exit TWRP, but this is very easily fixable. I've done the procedure myself many times without any issues. Just follow the threads.
Will I be able to update phone with stock update app after steps which I mentioned in the topic (of course being on the stock ROM)? Or will it brick my phone/lose root etc.?
I don't wanna be rooted anymore. I just want to use the device as it is. Is there any way I can relock my device, which was originally on Chinese rom, that is now in Global rom latest September 2022 OTA.
If anyone has relocked their device on global rom, how did you do it without bricking?
Yes, read the comments in that post that teaches how to convert it
If you already did an ota update and was ok you can reset to factory and just unlock from fastboot. No brick.
