N9 or S2 - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been looking for a decent Android tablet for a little while now and I have no idea what to go for? I love tinkering but I'm not very technically minded, so I have to depend on the awesome people at XDA for guides and advice.
I've narrowed my search to either a N9 or an S2, but can deviced which one would be better overall and to tinker with... Any advice ?

I love the Nexus 9, out of all the Nexus tablet's I have owned it is the best, right Next to my Nexus 10. I recommend it 100%, but only if you plan on installing Lineage OS 14.1 or any other custom firmware. The display is fantastic too, I care more about colors than resolution, and the colors are perfect. Warm but still real. I love it. I have never used an S2 but the Nexus 9 is a dream. Fast, decent battery (takes ages to charge), and great multi tasking. Maybe I just got lucky though.
Verdict? if you want stable grab an S2 if you want a great tab too mess with grab an N9

Hello all, Just would like some opinions please

Hi all, I am a member here coming from an AT&T Galaxy S3. I just ordered a Galaxy Note an hour ago and wanted to know some hands on user experiences? I have looked at youtube videos and they just don't seem to do the trick. I would like to know if they are really smooth and if they have good functionality, battery life, and if the development is good?
With the GSM SIII's losing IMEI's left and right, and all the bugs already, I am wondering how good the note really is.
I am not really looking for a 'persuasion' opinion because I will have both devices here before too long when the note gets here. I just want to know everyones experience and if the phone is laggy or anything, or any known bugs.
Any help is greatly appreciated and I will thank all members that give me some feedback.
Thanks! :good:
First off congrats on getting your note.
Stock 2.3 had some lag issues for me but ics fixed that and is smooth even stock.
As far as development goes i haven't tried allot out but have seen allot going on there are some great stockish roms with only a few tweaks but my choice right now is the collective aocp cp1 ROM .

I appreciate this. I am hoping it will be good. I have like 8 devices now and I am trying to keep it on just one lol. I am stuck between my GSIII and now the Note when it arrives. I am sure each will have its perks. I just wanted user experiences.
Right now, in my opinion, the Note is the best phone on the market. We have awesome dev support. Any worries of lag you can pretty much throw out the window. The stock ROM, debloated, is very smooth and performs well, I have been quite happy with debloated stock ICS, and it it's legitimately the first Android I have used where the stock ROM is bearable, let alone satisfactory.
However, the work the devs have done will likely make you want to flash a custom ROM fairly quickly. We have official CM9 nightlies, and to make that even better, Cyanogen himself is the developer for that. We also have AOKP variants, as well as a few hybrids and AOSP roms. I'm currently running Gubment Cheeze by rasroygbiv, which is a CM9 variant, and I couldn't be happier, this thing flies and sips battery; highly recommended by me. I've tried most everything in the development forum as I'm a flashaholic, and I can tell you that the Note will not disappoint. JB is also in the works by several of our developers, and we should have stable builds very soon. Dev support is awesome to say the least.
There are no issues with IMEI switching that are know, and we have plenty of options to return your Note to complete stock, including a flash counter reset, so you shouldn't have any worries flashing. In addition, it's a Samsung, which means unless you're dumb and rush things, it's damn near impossible to hard brick. And even if you do manage to hard brick, there are JTAG services available for like 40 bucks that will fix that.
Battery life is slightly above average which is nice. Most people get around 3.5-4 hours of screen on time, and generally anywhere from 12-18 hours of standby or more depending on what all you have running/syncing. So there shouldn't be any worries there.
Plus, we have this beautiful 5.3" monster of a screen that will make you fall in love. It isn't even a question that you'll love the Note. It's a question of if you'll still love your other phones. =]

First thing I would recommend is go with either a stock debloated ROM or even better would be going with h0tw1r3's ICS kernel and DAGr8's AOKP milestone 6 ROM. This combination for me has been beyond excellent. Incredibly smooth, rock solid stable and a pleasure to have. With my current CPU setup I'm at 15 hours off the charger and still have 70% battery (1 hour of screen on).
You can expect about 4-5 hours of actual screen on time.
If you can get past the size of the phone - which is honestly the biggest stumbling block for most new comers to the note, there's very few devices out there that are as good as the i717.
Good luck with your new note!

I am limited to 8 thanks per day, which I am pretty sad about, but I will be sure to thank you tomorrow haha.
I am not worried about the size, just the lag issues I have heard about and the quality of the screen.... can you differentiate between pixels to the naked eye or anything?

The new one is coming or being announced in two weeks. My note with the ROM I'm currently using is just as fast as my S3, and much more capable due to the Samsung apps-- I.e. S Note, the widgets, and the ability to flash S3 apps and widgets because of phMod and the touchwiz framework support inherent in such a configuration.
You absolutely ant go wrong. I had a macbook pro, which I used for browser duty/media, and an iPhone for gaming and news. I stopped using my iPhone and my macbook pro when I got my TF101. I then got my Galaxy Note, and stopped using my tablet for anything but reading, and I split news duty between my Note and Transformer.
Even with the Snapdragon S3, ICS & the custom ROMs (and gingerbread earlier on) made it so the performance was as smooth or smoother than on any other device I touched, including the Prime.
Even games like Dead Trigger, with the Tegra 3 graphics effects enabled run well. They don't run at 60FPS, but to be honest, the display quality is such that you'll be wowed by the resolution and color vibrance and won't notice when you're only running at 30-40 fps. The gpu was the only area where I could've used just a tad bit more power-- I had that power with the GPU over clock that came with the first over clock kernel that was available here. I haven't seen that GPU OC make a comeback in ICS, even after the kernel source was released--disappointing.
Some suggest that the new Note will have a quad core S4, or the new Exynos wit baked in LTE (they won't give up LTE)....so I really think you're cutting yourself short. On the other hand, the enthusiasts and developers are, and will be here, likely for another year, when on contract, they can get an early 18 month upgrade, unless they buy retail.
You have a vibrant, CM and Indie supported community here, with the turkey, the gravy, and all the trimmings. Its impossible to guarantee that wit a new device-- especially one that had a predecessor released what, 4 or 5 months ago (Jesus christ!).
So weigh an established device that is supported, vs a SoC upgrade....because the Note 2 won't be much different. It wont have a better screen-- in fact, the screen resolution will stay the same, and if the rumors are correct, screen size will increase, resulting in a lower pixel density. It will be unproven, and might get better battery life (I say it might, because the rumors say it will get thinner....something that will impact the battery capacity, when in combination with a change to a more efficient, would likely balance out). It will have a less dense, but bigger screen.
I will however tell you that virtually e v e r y o n e that's used the Note, would likely pick it over any device on the market anywhere.
The form factor and screen quality trumps virtually every other ace in the hole out there.

With the new kernel, and AOKP - I have ZERO lag. And the screen is on par with the best I've seen (including the 4s).

I can't compare the Note with your S3, but I have the Note and the international quad core S3. My quad S3 is definitely a hair smoother, but that doesn't make up for the extra screen real estate, and s pen functionality. The extra smoothness of the S3 is hardly noticeable, versus when I pull out my s pen and start taking notes. That's a noticeable difference.

honestly I will probably NEVER use the SPen lol.... I just like the bigger screen and I hear great development for it.
I just dont wanna go from my S3, to a Note, and then be disappointed. Granted I can always switch back, but I just spent X amount of money a new in box sealed note. I am pretty hopeful it works good. Thinking about donating some of these other phones I have to Devs that have bricked or something. I litterally have 2 iphone 4's, 2 iphone 4s's, a One X, a Note now, an S2 and S3, and like the older G1's and stuff. May do that when I finally decide what device to keep.

[Q] Solid, reliable 10 inch tablet recommendation?

I want to get a 10 inch tablet, but I don't want to wait for the rumored Nexus 10. I don't need a whole lot of space or power, but I do want something reliable.
I only ever buy Nexus phones, so I want something with that reliability. Not like the time I tried an HTC phone and it was an unreliable piece of sh*t with terrible build quality.

I don't think you,ll really find what you're looking for apart from a rumored nexus 10. The closest thing may be the asus infinity, but that still isn't stock android. Many rumors are pointing to something: phone, tablet, or both at the end of October. So it may be worth waiting one more month...
The answer relies heavily on how much money you want to spend.
I got a 2nd hand Galaxy Tab 10.1 which you can pick up for around £270 (wifi only), and it's been nothing but awesome. The only times I've had issues have been when I've put custom ROMs on there that aren't 100% complete (mostly Jelly Bean ROMs). The stock Honeycomb ROM that was on it when I got it was awesome.
It's solid, good quality, but still quite light. I'd really recommend you just go to a local supplier and get your hands on a few and play with them. There's a world of difference between a 7" and 10" experience, so don't be swayed by the "available now" feature of some smaller ones. As much as the Nexus 7 looks awesome, I like my girth

[Q] Time To Upgrade?

Hi all,
I love this Galaxy Tab 10.1 (WiFi) but even with the CM10.0, it feels sluggish sometimes. I know it is now older tech. What ROM are you guys on? I like AOSP based ROMs more than TouchWiz..
I was thinking of selling this off (near perfect condition) and getting the Nexus 10. I would love to see benchmarks of that next to the Tab 10.1.
Thoughts?
BTW - I got an Apple iPad 4 mostly for work since AV manufactures all have apps for their products and I need to sell/use these. Honestly, the hardware is great, but I really do not like iOS, even after jailbroken and modded.
I use Infamous rom. If i had the money for a Nexus 10, I wouldve had it since it came out. Good hardware and best/latest Android versions.
Same problem here, I've tried loads of roms and they all lag in some way (infamous, AOKP, CM10 and CM10.1)
Not sure what to do next, it's just no where near as smooth as my galaxy s3 phone
Doubt you'll get much for this tab and the nexus is still quite expensive
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda premium
I am going to buy the new nexus 7 (hopefully it will not take to long to release it) and keep my Galaxy tab. Probably will buy in 1 year a new 10 inch tab.
With CM 10.1, my tab is very nice (apart from some issues, that will be fixed). A little bit of lag from time to time, but I can live with it for the moment.

Any Note 3 users thinking not the N5?

So I've given up on not buying a new phone every time a new "super phone" comes out. I'll just have to strategically do trades to minimize my cost.
Which brings me to my next question, is anyone who is currently using a note 3 considering the n5 and the poor android experience? The note is a great phone, no doubt about it, really the best phone I've had so far. But when I had the s4 I flaked beanstalk rom and believe me when I say that my aosp s4 MUCH faster than my stock note 3. The battery life was amazing as well after I flashed beanstalk. The new N5 is a beautiful device. Pure Android (yes, stock android is truly awesome. It's simple, intuitive, and straight forward... No overlays to slow it down), anyone consider switching devices or getting the n5 as a backup phone?
No way am I giving up my note 3, but I'm really thinking bout purchasing the n5 thru the play store and playing around with the latest version of android. Switching up devices every now and then would be nice, plus ROMS, ROMS, ROMS! Flashing new roms makes me feel like I have a new phone. $349-399 is a GREAT PRICE for top of the line specs.

I have definitely thought about picking up a Nexus 5. That low price for a great device is definitely doable. It would be nice to switch it up every now and then also. I don't on the other hand think that as of right now I would use anything other than the Note 3 for my daily driver.
I have been thinking about this all week. I even made a column with each device and listed the plus's for each phone. When I was done I had two on the N5 side(price, pure android) and a lot more on the Note 3(Size, specs, spen, multi window support, better camera software, etc). That pretty much made up my mind to keep my Note 3
I too thought about picking up an N5. Great specs....and development is sooooo much easier on a Nexus device. I just wish there was a 64gb version.
I saw a report on it this morning and it seems that the camera is horrible on the N5... and that it takes forever to focus, take a picture, etc.
I will not get a phone with a smaller screen ..

Lol kinda this. I have one and it's sooooo quick and snappy, but I'm definitely going to sell it due to the screen size
Yeah...... I thought about it for a minute. No SD, non removable battery, REALLY horrible camera, could do with a 32 Gb, and USB OTG, just can't do it. I'm stock rooted, via kingoapp, after soft bricking my 1st(thanx to Sprint) and have removed and/or froze all the bloat, and have been getting my flash fix by using Apex, and the many free themes. Also, if you notice, there is hardly any development going on, I suspect because this phone is a BEAST! I have combined, on device, nearly 100Gb! My battery lasts from wake up til bed, mostly on 4G. Camera is superb, and I have had zero call/sound quality issues! 2.3 Gb Quad Snapdragon! Fantastic display....I mean really, what more could you realistically ask for? Now, having said that, I believe late 2014, and 2015 are going to be very interesting.....til then, Note 3 for me.:good:

Nexus 9 still a good buy?

Just sold my iPad 3 since it got slow as fk after updating it to ios 9. Is the nexus 9 good now? I heard it had a lot of performance issues. Stock wise and custom rom/ kernel wise how does it run? Has marshmallow/N ironed out all the lag?
I would say yes! i still love mine.
Custom ROMs and/or Kernels do help a lot.
Depends on the price and how much time you have to mess with it, in the event you get one like some of us have. I have hope for N, but the dp3 and dp4 didn't stay on the tab very long-one day for 4-both times the battery life/charging-while-running was compromised. The strange thing about this tab is that it runs beautifully for about a month to six weeks, then the lags, etc. Dirty Unicorn didn't help, but I prefer stock. I'm using elementalx. Right now, mine is a primo device. By August, it will require a wipe and reset. When it works correctly, it's a dream, IMO. I love the screen and the screen ratio. If I could find one I liked better, I would get it. I tried iPad (even with jailbreak) but couldn't stand the lack of control, and the size was too big. I tried 8" Galaxy S and Shield but didn't like the size. Shield seemed lacking in other areas.

I've had pure Nexus on my tablet 2 months. It is still lightning fast. Using pure Nexus ROM and fire and ice kernel. It I could I would buy two more for my boys to use. So to answer your question yes it is still a good buy. Just as long as you root and ROM it. Stock is slow and gets slower everyday you use it. About a month then it becomes so slow you want to throw it.
I'd have to say no.
Things can be improved by rooting and flashing roms & kernals but at the end of the day, the 2GB ram is still, and always will be a bottleneck. :crying:
I've now switched to a much older LG v500 running CM13 and the performance is much more consistent. The N9 can be faster, but I have no issues like Chrome tabs and the launcher refreshing on the v500. :highfive:
Considering the v500 can be bought used for about half the price of a used N9, I know where I'd put my money if I had my time again.
