Finally my laptop smartphone docking station is finished! A lot of planning and work stuck in it! I have used an old Acer 17,3 "laptop for it. I removed the mainboard and all electronics from it and installed a good full HD panel. The panel is connected with an HDMI to EDP converter board with the smartphone. I installed some voltage transformers, a 2x3 Watt audio amplifier for the laptop speakers, a charging board, a 5v fan and an USB Hub. The smartphone is connected via USB C (mhl) cable and for sound there is an audio cable. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to run the original keyboard and the touchpad. That's why I installed an ultra flat Bluetooth keyboard with TouchPad.
A battery is not installed yet. This is the next thing I want to do.
So... I don't need a real computer any more!

Hey! That is totally awesome!!
Congrats for it!
Do you have a plan to put the phone as a TouchPad, replacing the original TouchPad? Since it seems like razer's project Linda is awesome, and also eliminates the "bump" on the back..

Yes, I've thought about that, but that would mean more work, I'm satisfied now!

Nice one man... it is very awesome.. i am sure you can still modify this and make more reliable by taking the mobile at front.. there are some other laptops like this from there you can get some design inspiration...
nice, got me thinking how about the motorola atrix dock? back in the days? that could boot linux and ****. will that dock work with the s8 (damn that moto atrix laptop dock thing was my child hood dream
So I build in a 4s 2650mah lipo battery in it. It seems to work fine. The DC DC converters that I build in , can handle the 4s (14,8V) battery very well! Even phone charging is working?? I will upload a small video in the next few weeks.

I have an Atrix lapdock, it will load dex, but the screen resolution wont handle the output from the phone, it overloads it. At least thats what mine is doing. So instead I use it for my Raspberry pi for now.
How to "Gaming Dock" AKA:"Lapdock" (like motorola)
is 1 LCD inverter + USB(or ps2 to usb) pins into IO.
-> Screen = li-ion power cell to DC lcd inverter.
use any laptop shell. lcd will be DVI over HDMI
Exactly What I was looking for
I have been looking for something like this for business trips. I used DEX at home for my S8 Note, but laptop for travel would be perfect. I have an older Toshiba laptop I was going to donate, but this will be my new project. Appreciate you sharing your project.

So I bought myself a micro HDMI to HDMI cable, and was excited to use it with my Prime. But at first nothing showed up on my TV! I then tried moving the cable around in the micro HDMI port and the cable can move around pretty much when it's plugged in! Mainly up and down, and only if the cable is at a certain angle a signal is made.
Is the cable supposed to move up and down freely? If I plug my full sized HDMI into my laptop, it's not moving in any direction (except out of course )! I kind of expected the micro HDMI to do the same thing.
When the micro HDMI cable is placed at the right angle, my Prime notifies me that an HDMI cable has connected and the image goes through to the TV. If the cable is at the wrong angle both the notification and image goes away.
Is my Prime strange or is this normal?
I have exact same looking cable(hama) and its sits very tight in hdmi port
on my prime,no movement at all.
Try to use some other cables
depends on the brand cable you use. some are tighter fitting than others. I used the one that came with my atrix phone. not the tightest fix but works until I find another one.
I have the same adapter and I noticed some up/down wiggle as well. However, even though there is a little bit of wiggle, my HDMI connection always stays connected.
I actually just received the adapter in the mail this weekend and when I first plugged it in to my TV I didn't see any thing at all. So I was thinking, "is there something I need to enable on the Prime to tell it to send video to HDMI out?". After a little dinking around I discovered my TV was on the wrong HDMI input. After switching to the right one, all was good.
I am using Accel micro hdmi to hdmi bought from Frys. It is working fine without any issue. It fits perfectly.

yes but its like with memory cards n other things. some might be slightly longer or thicker than others, etc...there are variances within the standard.
So it could be me being paranoid, but I just returned my TFP because my HDMI out port wasn't working. I've heard of other people with TFPs having bad HDMI ports as well. Now it could be just a coincidence but I wonder if the HDMI port is not as sturdy as it should be. You might want to return your TFP if your still in the window. If not try the cable on another device or try a different cable.

I have never heard that the size of data/display ports can 'vary'. Even the smallest amount of size variance can make a cable (especially small ones like micro HDMI) not fit properly which is why there is a standard that is followed when manufacturing these things.
My guess is that the 'wiggle' that the OP is referring to (and the wiggle that I notice with my adapter) is most likely due to the female micro HDMI port on the tablet not being solidly attached to the main board. The female port may also be bent on the inside, causing a bad connection. I highly doubt that the 'wiggle' is occurring because of the male micro HDMI port being too small or something. I suppose one thing that would prove my theory wrong would be to buy a different adapter and try it, but my guess is you are going to have the same result.
My HDMI worked for a while until one day when video wasn't displaying on my TV with the HDMI chord in. So I unplugged it and my TFP froze. From then on, I haven't been able to get get my TFP to see the HDMI cable when it's plugged in. Basically I think the hdmi port might have died. Tried on several TV's and still no dice. I might eventually try another HDMI cable, we'll see. I'm not in a hurry.

Yeah, I've got one. It does what it says but a word of warning, it sits loosely when connected to the transformer. It's very handy though as I don't have a dock and so far everything I've plugged into it works well.
I just got mine today (actually 30mins ago).
Already taken it apart and are going to modify it. I dont fancy having 1dm extra height on my tablet, especially not on the underside. (edit: ok I lied, its actually only 8.3cm..... only...)
And yes, it sits quite loosely.
Im going to post a guide if my mod is successful. I am also going to try and add a charger port on it.

I don't know if it would be possible but how about adding another usb port. This would save using a USB hub to connect more than one peripheral to the transformer.

Simply adding another usb port isnt possible, you still need the hub control chip.
That would be possible to do but would require you to make a new 'case' for the adapter, and it would get quite big (relatively).

You can find them on ebay. Relatively expensive though.

I really miss a right-click feature when using a mouse while remote controlling a PC :/... not that that has anything to do with the adapter though.
Im not sure I should post my guide on how to add a cable to the adapter... It wasnt my best day and it turned out quite disasterous I somehow managed to kill 2 solder points so had to find alternative source lol
And I gave up on the charging port... I couldnt for the life of me figure out which pins is for charging. The ones I thought (by comparing to the original charger cable) turned out to just short-circut the TF

I haven't seen anyone post about the MHL capabilities of the DNA yet so I figured I'd try my adapter from my Nexus... it works fine with the cheap 5 to 10 dollar ones you can buy on amazon... you just need to be sure that you power the adapter it wont work without external power

I also have a mhl adapter from pny but I did not connect power to the adapter and the external display worked. Was your display on the phone and tv laggy or smooth after you connected the adapter? Were your videos in sync with the image produced on the phone itself?
MHL adapter kit
The MHL adapter for HTC DNA from iBOLT features a 2 meter (6ft) extension cable so you can stand in front of the TV and play Angry Bird, racing or whatever other games you prefer. With licensed MHL technology it is a real 30 frames per second so there's no delay and the sound quality is great when playing even advanced games. My kids love MHL, they only want to watch Netflix kids programs now without painful commercial interruptions.
The only thing to be aware of with Android MHL is that some sites block the HDMI port out. Two examples are Hulu+ and HBO (they don't block it from iOS). Most others, like Netflix and almost all web streaming sites works perfect. Google Play has an amazing picture quality on the newer videos when you rent them, absolutely clear 1080p resolution if you have enough WiFi bandwidth. The best use of MHL is to show photos and videos though on the big screen TV. The quality with good adapter is near perfect and the phone is charging while you are doing it too.
The "cyber Monday" price for an iBOLT complete MHL adapter kit with 6ft HDMI cable and the required 1 amp microUSB wall charger is only $24.95. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll check back daily here. Here's a YouTube video showing the technology and the kit I was referring to. The Samsung OEM has a very good reputation if you don't like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmaKIJ90Xz4&feature=plcp
The image and everything was in sync... Sounds were good I watched a little but of transformers... The picture looked like crap but that is because it's compressed over Google play... You tube looked great

I bought one and it works well, but the framerate seems a little slower. It is usable, but certain apps seem to not allow being shown via the HDMI such as NFL Mobile and Hulu Plus.
The Samsung adapter for GSIII works on the DNA.
I have experienced issues with hardware accelerated subtitles using the MHL cable. Viki shows video but no words and that is kind of useless for me. Fortunately downloaded subtitles play in MXplayer with the software subtitle option.

I think I know the answer to this question but I will ask anyway...lol
Is there any MHL to HDMI adapter cables that do NOT need an external power source for the adapter? Seems kinda crappy to have to plug power into the adapter,
If so, a link to one would be greatly appreciated
Just put my order in to upgrade from my Thunderbolt to the DNA. Figure I will want to get a wireless charging pad, the MHL to HDMI adapter, and a micro USB to USB to mount external storgae.
As an aside...I cannot believe no company has actually created a micro USB to Micro SD adpater cable! I saw some links to threads here where people actually built their own...pretty cool...but hard to believe no company has stepped up for this. With the form factor fo phones moving more towards the DNA, One X, etc, I would think those would sell like hotckaes!
While browsing this thread I came to wonder about the DNA's mirroring. So when the right cable is connected, mirroring becomes available? Makes me wonder if a cable exists that might be micros USB on one side and (don't laugh) RCA on the other. My car's head unit had an add-on that allows RCA video inputs to display on the nav screen. It worked back when I used an iPad occassionally.

Lets use a MacBook Pro early 2008 for our little Samsung DeX laptop project.
Looks roomy inside. Lets make more!
Lots of space to play around with.
Now for the waiting period of this project. We need to find an LCD controller board for this particular monitor. ebay to the rescue!
LCD controller board and backlight inverter arrived. DHL Express used a private jet I think.
Now for the fun part, we need to make this keyboard and trackpad work via USB. Lets bring out our soldering iron.
The 4 wire USB cable will need to connect, Ground, 5V0, R2 and DP. Success, we now have a working keyboard with a USB connector.
Next up. Fitting some batteries. These batteries is of type lithium polymer and was from an old laptop. However they where already showing signs of decay. Better now use them in a closed enclosure...
So I purchased two Power banks of the same type, and crossed my fingers the production date of the batteries matched. And lo and behold, they did! Slap those bad boys in parallel. 20000mAh, and 74Wh, plenty for around 4-5 hours of screen time.
Time for the lcd controller board, screen buttons and inverter to be fitted. Looks OK, but final reversion is better.
Maybe they will fit this way. Nope lets try again. The black box is the C-FORCE CF003 by the way.
Now we are getting somewhere, this looks OK. Note that I had to desolder the DVI, VGA, DC power, Audio in and Audio out plug from the lcd controller board for the height to fit.
2x XL6009 Step-up Power Module DC-DC Converter fitted, one for 12v and the other for 5v for fans and charging the phone while plugged in. Also added the 1A 5V Micro USB TP4056 Lithium Battery Power Charger Board Module TE420 for charging the batteries. And what will become the external USB plug. The 12v DC-DC gets hot as f***, so we need to find a way to cool it. I am happy I used very thick wire, as the inverter needs 4amp.
To my luck the original MacBook fan fits perfectly to cool down the DC-DC converter. Its the gray one in the bottom right.
Lets put it all together and see if it fits. I reused the original power plug for turning on and off the screen from the power button on the MacBook keyboard.
Isn't it lovely? I also found a magnetic micro usb charger cable for the charge wire. Can hardly tell it apart from a real MacBook Pro.
Next project. I need to see if I can fit this USB to Ethernet from StarTech. Should be possible.

You could probably shave off some more by using a smaller adapter, say, the 30$ MELOPOW M002 - which is considerably smaller than the C-Force one you're using.
I'm also planning something similar, but I'd use a dedicated QC2.0 compatible charging controller that supports pass-through charging (which I haven't been able to find so far), Type-C and is relatively cheap (say, a not too branded chinese power bank from AliExpress).
Awesome!
Hey man,
If you switched to an eDP board and screen, you'd get over 30 hours of battery life, no joke. That video board you have is from 2005, which is why it's so power hungry. I have the same board and an eDP board in mine. I have a 56Whr battery in mine and eDP and it lasts so long that I've never drained it, I always tend to plug it in before it's even at 25% life.

Lets use a MacBook Pro early 2008 for our little Samsung DeX laptop project.
Looks roomy inside. Lets make more!
Lots of to play around with.
Now for the waiting period of this project. We need to find an LCD controller board for this particular monitor. ebay to the rescue!
LCD controller board and backlight inverter arrived. DHL Express used a private jet I think.
Now for the fun part, we need to make this and trackpad work via USB. Lets bring out our soldering iron.
The 4 wire USB cable will need to connect, Ground, 5V0, R2 and DP. Success, we now have a working with a USB connector.
The black box is the C- CF003 by the way.
I reused the original power plug for turning on and off the screen from the power button on the MacBook .
Isn't it lovely? I also found a magnetic micro usb charger cable for the charge wire. Can hardly tell it apart from a real MacBook Pro.
Next project. I need to see if I can fit this USB to Ethernet from StarTech. Should be possible.

I tried something similar (OTG peripherals/WiFi display) a year or so ago, mixed up my power supplies for the display inverter and fried it. After burning a nice spot in my table I decided it wasn't really worth pursuing.
Great work though, very cool.
Where did you got that flat hdmi cable?
You can buy it on Amazon.

Cool!
Care to name some parts, maybe even show off your build?

That's my prototype when I was making it a business.
Hi, that's an epic projet, when I saw the news of this project I was thinking "shoot, someone overshooted me" because I had the idea to do the same but for the Nintendo switch a month or so ago but didn't quite got the money to do that, and then I saw your amazing project and now I need your help (if you want to) to make the laptop keyboard a USB keyboard (I'm using an old Compaq 610 laptop) :fingers-crossed:

Most older laptops use onboard controllers for the touchpad and the keyboard (but at least for the keyboard). This is a problem especially if you want to convert it into a USB keyboard, because without the controller, the keyboard itself is nothing more but a 8x18 diode matrix with a 25-pin connector. And since most manufacturers wire their keyboards differently, if it isn't a well researched model, especially if it's a model where the controller is ON the motherboard and not separate, you'll be out of luck (unless you know how to write your own firmware for the USB HID device for a compatible microcontroller like a Teensy).
However there are tons of very small keyboards that more or less fit a generic laptop keyboard's size on AliExpress that are by default USB, and need only some minor changes to fit into your case.
There are also some laptops that have the keyboard and touchpad hooked up together with a controller, and the whole shebang connects to an internal USB header. With those laptops, the controller often has exposed pads or pins for the VCC, GND, RX and TX lanes that you can solder onto, essentially making a full USB keyboard.

Thanks for the answer, I figured that out by searching on Internet but I had hope for a solution :s (forums were old) but I think I shold find a workaround with a small keyboard, thanks for the tips ^^
Hello, can someone try a USB-C to HDMI adapter with Motorola One Zoom please ?
It should work because its USB-C port is a USB 3.1 like Motorola Z4 (which has HDMI out over USB-C confirmed) and they nearly have same specs but still no proof for One Zoom

Hello, I am happy to report that the Motorola One Zoom indeed has HDMI out over USB-C, just tried to connect it via USB-C to a portable projector (Viewsonic M1) and it works! :good:

Thank you @PrimosuTech it's very helpful ! I didn't know there were projectors with USB-C video input, so you used a USB-C to USB-C cable ?
But again, thank you PrimosuTech ! :good:

You're welcome booldega! Yes, I used an USB-C to USB-C cable for it, the Viewsonic M1 is a pretty cool portable projector I must say...
Anyway to clear you out any doubts today I have also tried an actual USB-C to HDMI cable to connect the Motorola One Zoom to a Monitor and again it worked perfectly so 100% there is HDMI over USB for our phone, yay!
Ciao from Italy!
I tried usb-c to hdmi (via Microsoft dongle) did not work.
I used a Dell docking station with USB C, it is made for laptops, but it worked without any problem. It outputs video to both plugged monitors at the same time, as well as sound. I don't know if you can use double monitors for anything else than mirroring in Android, or if in makes sense otherwise. Usb mouse and keyboard work, as well as fast charging.
But it works.
does it has a desktop mode like dex?emui?
Today I've tested usb-c connection to monitor.
Android 10 works very well. It's possible to split apps, basically do everything - screen will be mirrored to a monitor.
If they're speakers built-in in, you'll also hear sound from monitor. Watching videos from camera becomes even easier.

No it doesn't. It's just a screen mirroring, not a screen extension or a particular mode.
I tried a micro USB to HDMI (with a usb C adaptor) and didn't work
I just tested USB-C to HDMI hub and it works. To be exact its ABASK adapter. Also charging while child USBs are connected is working, so this makes a nice work station. I'm surprised why Lenovo isn't adverising this feature.
I wonder what are the requirements for the cable to make it work.
I hesitate to buy Motorola One Zoom, because official Motorola support told me by e-mail, that none of Motorola smartphones have HDMI-out compatibility. That seems odd, as it's not the only model that users confirmed to make it work. HDMI-out is the only requirement for a new smartphone for me.
Did you use standard USB-C>HDMI cable or some adapter / docking station that has female HDMI on the way?
Is there a list of smartphones with HDMI-out feature somewhere on XDA forums?
Sorry for double-post, but I wanted to update this thread with my experiences.
I finally bought Motorola Zoom and it works with HDMI-out. I used multi-port solution from Natec (has female HDMI and male USB-C).
I had some problems with disappearing screen on the monitor, that is connection was sometimes broken and then came back, again and again. After many tries of trial-and-error I found out that the source of my problem is LTE Internet. Everytime my phone started to use LTE, it disconnected active HDMI link. Switching Internet to 3G (or using airplane mode) solves the problem permanently.
I wanted to share it, if anyone happens to have the same issue in the future.
