Hi,
I have a Galaxy S3 that does not switch on, or charge. Full disclosure; I bought it second hand in full cognisance of this fact*, but I really thought it was a software glitch or something I could fix with a hard reset. The reason for this is the guy I bought it from swears blind it's not water-damaged, which I've verified by checking the moisture sensors. So, I tried a hardware reset (volume up+power button+home button) but nothing. So, does anyone know what it could be other than water-damage**?
*Yes, I'm aware it was stupid. But it was really cheap, and I have very poor impulse control. I'm like a cat, you can't dangle something like that in front of me and not expect me to pounce on it ;p
**Screen appears to be in perfect condition.
Take the battery out and look at the model number....im worried your the victim of a chinese dud!

Nope, it's got Samung logos and all that; it says the SSN is I9300GSMH, which as far as I'm aware is the real deal. I've also checked the IMEI, and it corresponds to a real SGS3. So what is wrong with it?

May seem silly, but have you tried another battery?
That is my next move. Ordered one, hasn't shown yet. Presuming it doesn't work, what are my other options?

As previously discussed in another thread, the chinese fakes look the real deal, all branding, samsung logos, model numbers etc match up to actual s3 devices, but the hardware is fake 540x960 display, 512mb ram etc....seriously worth looking into buddy

Impossible to tell unless it switches on though.
I've compared it to the (apparently) real S3 in this video, and while everything seems to match up with mine, one thing is the microSD card slot and SIM tray have weird blue windows in them, which looks a bit suspicious. Did anyone else's phone arrive with these? It looks like they're replacements.
I don't want to sound too depressing but some of us have had our phones completely die for no reason after a few months. Mine's currently at the service centre and others who have had theirs back say that the circuit board was replaced. Mine didn't get wet, or dropped, it just stopped working.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
That *is* mildly depressing but if it comes to that I suppose all I can do is return it or sell it on as spares, try to get the money back :/ (all while hoping it *is* genuine)
(The circuit boards are really expensive to replace, also.)
Update: (like anyone's interested, but anyway) got my USB jig today, plugged it in following the method on this forum, but nothing. Not really surprised tbh.
Going to try a new battery next, but seriously doubt it'll come back to life at this stage. Thanks for the suggestions and comments anyway, and if any users have anything not covered already, just post it below. Thnx
Thought I'd update this again to report the lack of success of a battery switch....again, not really surprising.
I also need to reiterate the point that mine arrived with what looks like a replacement SIM tray/sdcard slot rig, such as those you see on eBay. I'm not sure whether to take this as suspicious or...what, and am now just ready to give up entirely on the phone. Any advice before I do this would be welcome
Do you mean those translucent blue stickers on the sim and micro sd slots? My phone came back from the service centre with these too (which definitely weren't there when I took it in)

I think your motherboard is fried.
Its happed a lot the last weeks.
Only thing you can do is go to a reparation serves center for a replacement.

You need more than delete root and clockwork .
Read the Return to stock for warranty post .
But as you have no screen do a search for how do i with no screen posts .
Or just take to a service centre and pay as warranty does not cover wrong firmware .

Rom Manager is a very respectable application from a respected developer - it could have saved you from all this trouble..
Anyways - as mentioned your digitizer is completely fried and there is absolutely nothing to do about this except replacing the whole screen probably - which will cost you around 200$ if they don't fix it by warranty.
This happened to Erica (youtube) when she flashed CWM from the Note 2 by mistake.
Next time, either stick to simple applications to do it for you, or make sure you have the correct files.
Follow all instructions properly next time too.

No, as far as I know and as Erica explained, there is a little chip behind the screen, and that what get's damaged.
As far as I know, you need a completely new screen - do some research though.

Hello,
recently after getting my phone back from repair the device will either charge very slowly or doesnt charge at all
usually reconnecting the charger back solves the problem.
i have seen in the forum many people complaining about this issue but i have never seen a real answer for this..
i did rule out the possibility that the charger is flawed, the charger is fine i even baught a new one and tried multiple others.
so it must be either the phone hardware or.. maybe software?.. in case its software i did try reformating the device
but that didnt help at all.
my question is, would reflashing the rom be a possible solution?. i never did flash the rom its the stock one from the day i got it
and it has neevr been reflashed or anything just reformat.
i have no interest in custom roms unless its necesery.
thankyou

Return to the repairer .
Doubt if flash stock will help but worth a try as you don't know what the repair has broken .
Well there are two features added on all galaxy roms i guess, one which detects unstable power and decreases the charge rate to a point which makes it stable and the safety margin which does something similar i can't really remember however if you want the normal charging rate it is a necessity that you flash a custom kernel the only one i know of which has a feature of disabling these two options is boeffla's kernel and even increase the charging rate

well, i've tried it during the whole day and i plugged/unplugged the charger many times
it worked fine (thats after reflashing the stock rom 4.3), after that i did notice one time it was plugged for about 20 mins and no change of battery precentage. so that got me worried..
i download "galaxy charging current" to see the values of the charging and it said
max: 600
now:999
avg:600
now im just trying 2 get suspocious maybe its the charger after all it seem maybe alittle deffected even tho its new..

thanks! appearntly the charger i purchased from the same store arent genuine so that might be it..
i tried a couple of friend's genuine chargers and it worked great..
im gonna purchase one like that somewhere.. maybe ill find on ebay
and test it for few weeks see if it works fine
so i guess in conclusion this mobile is very sensitive toward non-genuine chargers..
but wat did u mean by "generic usb charger" exactly..?
like the ones that r ac to usb adapters and i just connect the usb cable?

Maybe generic is not the right word. English is not my native language : ) What I mean is just a regular all-purpose (not necessarily branded) power supply with a USB port. Look for the maximum current output. That should match or (preferably) exceed 500 mA. Don't look for a iPhone compatible charger. These look tempting with their 2.1 A current rating but your S3 could fail to recognize the potential of the power supply and switch back to USB charging mode. Android phones recognize an AC power supply by their data lines being electrically shorted. With iPhones that's a bit different if I recall correctly.
I partly agree with your conclusion. I do think the S3 is very picky with power supplies, but I don't think a genuine charger is a guaranteed success. As stated in my previous post, my phone charges at maximum current with an unbranded charger which I bought after my original Samsung charger (the one that came with the phone) failed to achieve the same.
alright so i finaly purchased a genuine charger for sure..
appearntly the chargers i bought from the other store were not..
and i have used it for about 2 weeks now and it works amazing.. always shows 800 on charging
so in conclusion any1 have this kind of problem.. make sure the charger rly is geuine.. there r so many fakes out there..

I think it's on boot and every time you unplug a USB cable from what I can tell. Waiting to find a way to disable that notification and the dumb volume warning that was also on the previous Galaxy phones. I wish Samsung gave you a way to disable them, but maybe they're worried someone is going to leave it open, dunk it in a glass of water then start complaining about how it wasn't really as waterproof as promised...

IMO knox really doesnt seem to matter in America. The only real reason for knox is that the international version has to be sent directly to Samsung for any warenty, repair etc. That is more or less Samsung's way of telling if its been tampered with. We would have to go to T-mobile for repair or warrenty. T-mobile doesnt really seem to care about knox as they only check for actual physical damage like water damage. Actually, if your on the Jump program they will now (with certain restrictions) replace your device even if its your own fault.

Next time ask it simply : did work without any issues before ? are you new to this smartphone stuff ? right away you can determine if you talk to a blond or an older person who is into changing the roms on 99% of his/her phones like clothes. This is the 2nd phone I never touched or rooted as I didn’t need to.
So to finish this off topic thanks for your reply !
And bushako :
Thanks will have a talk with sony tomorrow morning. Im even ok to sell it as for parts on ebay but if someone can retrieve it my data is still on it in offline mode till he/she connects to the net with it :/
What is wrong with you?

Your responses are totally uncalled for and completely disproportionate. Actually they're downright offensive. "Blond" - really?

Hi,
I have the same issue with my Z Ultra c6833, just the red led light when connected to the charger and pc. I dont get any responses to the buttons or any vibration when pressed. Before it died, It still powered on showing me the time and how much battery it has, around 92%. So decided to connect my magnetic charging cable to charge and waiting for the green led light meaning it's charging, but never got the green light and the Ultra never powered up again. Its on the official kitkat rom, not rooted and not a scratch, well babied. Tried charging it over night and the whole day, still just the red led light I get and computer doesn't even recognize it when it's plugged in.
Can I send it for warranty here in canada even though it's the c6833 model? Or can I send it to any service center to have it fix? And how much do you guyz think it will cause me to have it fix?
Thanks in advance for future replies.

EDIT: Information given to me below by the online Sony Rep was incorrect. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56814703&postcount=17 for correct info.
Just talked to a Sony rep as I'm interested in buying this phone from the US and wanted to know about warranty etc. Your covered by 1 year manufacturer's but you have to send it to the centre with country of origin. I'm not sure if that means the country you bought it from (which was what I was asking because I wanted to buy it from the States) or the intended region of the phone. If your phone is under warranty (i.e. within a year of purchase) you should be able to get it fixed but you will have to mail it out of the country. If out of warranty I'm not sure -- may be able to get it fixed here.

1st when you cant see someone (personal conversations versus typing)and the first ish help is if i used the charger the right way anyone would go nuts....In the first post i detailed as much as possible to make sure i wont get the "common" resolution options hence they were all tried and failed.
2nd yes it is great but that means he can read too just like you if you read it from the beginning. I would of been lucky if i get the right attitude from the other end too.
3rd i didnt say anyone owe me help. i searched, read, and asked when all failed. in my spare time i run non-profit help and information sites +teaching beginners for free so don't need lessons how to use my spare time. People like you who doesnt read ruin communities to be fair. Read first ask 2nd is what i do and did in the past almost 20 years since i had my 386. so go and read it again and troll somewhere else with you logic.
Thx

Hi
I been to about 50 shops nobody were able to fix it nore there was any solution online anywhere The best you can try is to sell it on eBay they will bid it over £100 easily if your screen is in mint condition.

Just to follow up. I bought a device on ebay that stated the location as Memphis. The fedex shipment is actually coming from Singapore.
I chatted with an online rep and further called Sony Canada and they both confirmed that a device under 1 year manufacturer's warranty CAN be given to a Sony Canada Service Centre. The only caveat is that they cannot give a turnaround time (it's usually 2 weeks or something) as they say they may need to get parts from abroad.
I'm not sure how much that would apply for a C6833 as it's more or less the same as the C6806.
But there you have it.
Thanks for the reply Unidentifier
When I called Sony Canada on Nov 9th, they verified my c6833 still under warranty by checking the IMEI number. They emailed me the RMA number and shipping label for Purolator ( Shipping out and back is free, so I didn't spend a penny ) Service Center here in my area in Toronto is in Mississauga.
The rep told me that it will take a little longer than the standard 2 weeks to get it back because the device is an Asian/European version, because there's chances they might order the parts from it's place of origin.
But to my surprise, after they received my c6833 on Nov 12th I got a notice form Purolator last Nov 18th that my device came back from the service center already. So picked it up at the depot, at first I was so worried because I'm thinking maybe they didn't fix it cause it came back to quickly. After inspecting the device and the documents that came back with it, found out that they replaced it with a new Bell c6806 on Kitkat v. 14.4.a.0.108 but unlock, it works with Koodo and Rogers sim.
So all is well now, just not sure if I lost something because they gave me a c6806 instead of my previous c6833.
My only question now is how to prevent this from happening again? My feeling is that the magnetic charging cable is the reason why my device died, maybe that's the reason why Sony never made an official magnetic charging cable. Because there's always high chances you'll attach it in the wrong way. Unlike with the charging dock, it won't go in and connect itself unless it's putted in the right way.
Overall warranty experience with Sony is awesome! ?

About the question : sent the unit to Sony and they asked for £12 to find out it is dead. When i received it back went to another mobile repair shop just incase and they shown me that whatever they did they actually fried the mobo and cracked it too in the "diagnostics" process. So i took the screen out and sold it on eBay to get back at least some money after all the months of searching reading arguing waitingFORsony etc.
