Fingerprint Scanner with Oreo - Moto Z Questions & Answers

So since Oreo...8.0, I'm noticing that the the scanner no longer locks my phone. Is this true for anyone else? Also, it seems a little less responsive..I thought it was the Otterbox, but it seems others aren't having the same issue with that. Anyone notice difference since 8.1? (Stock, Unlocked Moto Z)

Scanner still locking and unlocking fine here. Sorry to hear that yours isn't!
How did you update? I did the OTA. But, I also did a factory reset after, for a clean start. But the scanner worked fine before the reset too.
Good luck!

well to be honest for me at least it has always been a little laggy when it comes to unlock the phone and sometimes it makes me unlock it with the password I tought that once it has de oreo update that would change but it hasn´t I didnt do the factory reset tough let me know if you find out more information I will look as well

Is your proximity sensor blocked or dirty ? (It's between the front flash and the earpiece). Also if your screen is not properly glued in it's place the same thing will happen.
Had the same problem because of cheap liquid screen protection made the screen glue loose.

Fingerprint scanner

Hi all,
I am trying to figure out why my scanner is not operating. It was operating and suddenly stopped, wondering if it has to do with custom roms etc... I have tried to restore backups, factory reset phone, and tried recalibrating my prints. The scanner registers swipes when I have not touched it, and says swipe too short while trying to setup scanner password lockpad. so I want to know the software path in order to eliminate the possibly that its a software malfunction. I have read a few articles about the hardware being the issue but want to be sure its not something I may have mixed up.
Thanks in advance for any useful and/or helpful posts.

Anyone?? Anything? Also after I reboot I swipe about 10-20 times before it registers one swipe, saying swipe too short.

Or better yet will Motorola repair it if the bootloader is unlocked.

been here before. I am not sure if the root cause is the scanner has gone buggy on you (hardware not software related) but what I ended up doing to fix it was getting a new fingerprint scanner and swapping them out ($20+20 min to do the swap - might take you a bit longer)
I originally it was from the power button being misaligned (if I opened it up and adjusted, it would work for a period of time).
the x factor here was that it could have just been misaligned with the cover as i bought a new one but did not end up actually using it.) so that could be a possible fix as well.
the alternative? send it in to moto and wait for them to repair. Should be covered under warranty but who knows, haven't heard stories about people sending in their devices with a hardware problem with an unlocked bootloader to moto.
Will my warranty cover it, I know it's been void by unlocking the bootloader, but the scanner doesn't seem to me a piece of hardware that is altered by rooting. I have talked to Motorola ( forgot to mention the bootloader )and they say it is covered by warranty and want me to fill out a ticket etc. And send in for repair

Have you tried pulling the battery for a minute? Not just powering off, but actually pulling out the battery. It's known to fix some issues with FP scanner.

Just tried that. Booted back up and had 5 ghost swipes ( I didn't touch the scanner, but it said swipe too short and vibrated ). Also tried swiping after and no response. I'm leaning towards hardware malfunction.

I feel something diffrent
I had finger print reader problem so offen ... I have to restart my phone all time...
But I notice that it many time happens after i come back from swimming and even i wash my hands and not dry it proparlly I always have problem with finger print sensor.... While I upgrade to new firmware... and Taking care about my wet fingers... i dont swip if my finger is wet...and I dont remember I ever had issue after that...
Please try wiping the sensor with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
Let it dry completely.
then test again.

I will try that cause it is kinda oiled up, but that doesn't explain the ghost swipes.

I am on alien v4 with theme
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
i have this exact same problem
I had some issues with Alien as well. I'm not sure if its from some of the debloat removed or what..but I installed Aura ROM with full Blur..and my fingerprint scanner has never worked better. It hasn't missed ONE swipe. On froyo I sometimes had to swipe twice to unlock..but this one is mint. Give it a try and then you at least know if its hardware it software. Just be sure to do a good clean wipe (fastboot) before install.

Installed aura.. problems persisted.
Edit: any new ideas?
My overclocked alien atrix
My problem was not software related, Motorola has repaired my phone, the fps hardware was to blame. Solved.

[Q] Fingerprint Scanner allowing access to anybody.

Hi all, I have recently bought an international Galaxy S6 EDGE. My fingerprint scanner was working fine until yesterday. My friend somehow managed to get INTO my phone with fingerprint locked. He was able to unlock it. I was shocked. He got into it twice. Sometimes it allows him to get inside, sometimes it doesn't. Today, I managed to unlock my phone, using fingers I have never registered before. I wiped my home button several times with wet tissue etc. Still same.
Light taps on the home button unlocks my phone. But if I hold my unregistered fingers there, it will show no match.
I am seriously confused. I hope somebody can shed some light on this issue!
Thank you.

Weird indeed, this never happens to me, though directly after turning on my device, i received an update, that said something about Fingerprint sensor, I don't know whether it was an issue that got fixed by the update. Maybe you should search for that update if you don't have it installed already

Latest updates already installed. No idea what is happening.. I already tried switching locks then back to fingerprint. Same thing.

Did you try deleting all fingerprints and assigning new ones? If that doesn't help I think your last resort would be a factory reset
Spoke to Samsung today. They say it's a known issue and the device needs to be reflashed or if it's less than 28 days old your entitled to a new phone.

[Q] fingerprint unlock don't work

So, for the second time this month my phone suddenly won't let me unlock it with fingerprint or backup password. I unlocked it with the find my mobile site. Bit now it is unusable. I have tried to registered my fingerprints again but with no help. Anyone have a solutions for this that don't need me to reset my phone? The sensor works in other apps like like finger security or paypal so it must be a software issue.
In advance thanks!
Do you have Greenify installed?
I have the same problem with fingerprint unlock no longer working.
It worked flawlessly for a few weeks then had occasional failures but now has totally packed up.
I have rescanned my finger several times and it will work for a day or two before failing to work at all again.
Is it me or is it a fault with the phone.
I do some DIY around the house, so it is feasible that my prints are eroded and causing it not to be recognised.
Is this possible? If yes, then a fingerprint unlock system is badly flawed and unreliable.

I am having the exact same problem..was working fine for the first few weeks, works 3/10 times on the first attempt now
I have flashed UK unbranded firmware and so far, it is working within the first 3 attempts.

Fingerprint sensor error

My Alpha was working normally for 3 weeks, and then a day, it started to give an error when trying to unlock with fingerprint: "an error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor"
I unlocked it with password, then switched off fingerprint lockscreen. Then when I tried to turn it back on (click on the fingerprint manager) it dropped this error again "an error has occurred with the fingerprint sensor".
I have done factory reset, reinstalled with odin, downgraded to 4.4.4, no success. Then I took it to the service centre, they have replaced the home button and updated the software (to the same it was on it previously: 5.0.2 COI3, XEH region). The fingerprint worked at the service centre when I tried it. Then I went back home, done factory reset, few hours elapsed, then I tried to register my fingerprint, and this error showed up again. I reinstalled it with odin, with kies, downgraded to 4.4.4, deleted fingerprint app data, no success. I have found nothing helpful on the internet with hours of searching. It should be software related I think, it's very unlikely, that the hardware error (like unglued home button or something) occurred again, within this kinda short time.
Please help me, what to do. I would be very grateful
Im also having this problem, and many more people i believe. There are some fixes to this like heating it up or something. For some people it works, for some it doesn't.
EDIT: there's a video on youtube about it, you can try it.

I've seen it but I'm afraid that the screen or something will unglue due to the heat...
I ordered Premium Warranty Shipping, with spare phone, I hope they fix it but I will tell them firmly to replace the full phone or refund me the 510$ what's on the receipt.
But I'm open for any solution if anybody have it.

Going to second this, the fingerprint scanner works great for me, also slating a phone because it doesn't have any unofficial support is stupid.
Anyway probably best to send it back

Fingerprint Sensor

So i bought the phone yesterday,i opened it and did the casual setup including setting up 10 times my finger on the scanner.
So by the time the phone was setted for first time there were official software updates poping and i clicked them to download and install...after the updates were done i found out that fingerprint sensor settings were missing (both lock screen and fingerprint & security section) so i did a factory reset hoping it was just a minor issue...After the factory reset the options were still missing...i got 5 days left to return the phone if there are problems and i want to know if anybody knows
1.is the problem software related and i just need to wait for official update to get fixed?(i heard december lg launches official nougat version for the G5)
2.is it hardware problem so i take the phone back for repair?(power button works perfectly)
i really loved the phone so far especially the camera and everything and i really want to enjoy it (my prev phone had a lot of software bugs and i never actually enjoyed full of it...)
anyone know any fixes?i dont want to get into custom rom again (i really like the lg ui for change) if its software problem
Thank you for your time!
i guess no one has the same problem and my device is faulty?
I would try and exchange it because I don't have this problem and if a factory reset didn't fix it it's probably a hardware issue.

my bad people,it was NOT LG's problem, hardware AND software are perfect, its my first phone with scanner and i found out the hard way that to add fingerprint i HAVE to add a pin or a different unlock method before adding figners....sadly i rooted my device firstly to add cyanogemod and then i found out...so now i lost my warranty i guess...but at least now i know and if anyone else finds the same ""problem"" this thread will help him
Lesson learned for you. Why install a custom ROM right out from the start? Based on my experienced with my G5. It's performance is great. All things are great. I'm fine even if my phone is not rooted nor can't install a custom ROM. Unlike my G2. But by so far the phone is running great. So enjoy first the things on stock firmware.

i didnt want to install custom rom as i already had in my prev device (oneplus x) and i always likes lgs skin on android
but i wanted to see if the problem was software issue that cyanogen could fix in this case...i wanted lgs support to be my last resort as their services are bad, they tend to take week(s) to fix the phone and i heard from people that their phone returned scratched (that lg supported claimed they didnt do it)...so yeah i prefered to install custom rom and risk that i have to live without fingerprint than send the phone and get it back deleayed and probably in scratched condition
lesson learned indeed
