I know this device is ancient and unsupported. Does anyone, however, know which ROM ended up being the most stable performer? Rather than cutting edge, I want to ensure the device is stable and that it runs as 'fast' possible without instabilities. I used to try ROMs on the device back in the day, but many of them left me unhappy as far as I remember. So what are the options for anyone wanting to revive this device and use it for light reading (documents, PDF files), browsing (including using the SIM slot), and media including YouTube / Deezer?
Hi
Which rom was finally chosen for these criteria?
(I would restore this tab for a young child)
Thank you
Hi
I had tried multi rom (all CyanogenMod by Quallenauge ).
For me the best one is CyanogenMod 11.0. For Youtube you have to watch on Chrome browser, the youtube app don't work anymore. But Youtube for kids works.
For reading my Archos 101G9 is very good, specialy for comics on this big screen.
Using Titanium backup for deleting most useless app.
I'm very happy to use it beside is old age. The battery drain is good with airplane mode, but if you want use sim on it, i don't know.

I just received my Archos 101 yesterday, and after loading a few apps, some music/video on the external sd card, froyo, and LauncherPro, the tablet is extremely slow - to the point where it's not as 'responsive' as it used to be. Has anyone found anything (e.g. lagfix) that makes it a bit faster? I want to love this tablet because of the hell I had to go through with Amazon to get it, but it's really making me pissed off as of lately. Any help would be great - thanks in advance.
install os monitor, sort processes by cpu load and tell us if anything is eating all the CPU
http://www.appbrain.com/app/os-monitor/com.eolwral.osmonitor
I noticed the same thing on my A70. I switched from Launcher Pro to ADW launcher and it's noticably smoother without uninstalling anything else.
Why does os monitor show it is using 40% of my cpu?
Go to Settings / About Device
Register and upgrade your firmware to 2.0.71.
Go To Settings / About Device Power Management /
click on Overdrive
Go To Settings / Repair & formating / calibrate touch screen and accelerometer
do a google searck for gAppsinstaller_v4.apk
keep clicking untill it is installed on your device.
You will now have full google market.
Go to google market - Get Dolphin Browser - make it your default
go to google market - get vplayer beta to play all flash and other videos
recomended google market - get videos
google market - i music
Should be flying now - If running slow - go to desktop - click on system monitor - stop all programs - should be flying again -
tip - firefox is really slow and crashes?? dont install
When using touch screen never push hard - A light quick brushing action works best - or a light quick tap - always light on your fingertips -
tip - do not try to root - not necessary with overdrive setting - full root will come someday. No root is working right now for this firmware.
Good luck
David
i almost forgot
dont forget to go to android market and download and install adobe flash.
Try to erase all Mediafiles and reboot.
If your A101 is faster then you have a File that breaks the mediascanner.
Also if you are still on 2.1 the Mediascanner is running at every boot and scanns every file.
This has been fixed with the last FW.
Alright I did everything you guys have recommended and it is signficantly faster now. I think my biggest problem was that I didn't realize how sensitive the screen is compared to my Captivate. Also, is there any point in setting the cpu to 1000mhz using z4root/setcpu? (haven't been able to get that to work anyways, z4mod just freezes).
I got my Arcos 101 about a week ago and noticed the horrible sluggishness too. I tried doing the firmware update to Froyo and it was still sluggish. I'm now sure exactly what the option was called, but after the Froyo update, I went into settings and did a full format on the device. It reloaded everything from scratch, but I lost all of the 3rd party apps. So I called Archos and they pointed me to ftp://support.archos.com. There is a file called A101 HDD Contents.zip Just download it and unzip the folders. In one of the folders is the Archos customizations (apk files). Just install whatever programs you want and you will be back in business.
One other thing, you will need to set your CPU speed to Performance to get the 1ghz speed. The 2.0.71 build downclocks the cpu to 800mhz.
Oh, and I'm in the same boat with not being able to Root my device. Please z4root creator, fix this.
@dijitalm:
You don't need root for 1Ghz as you can easily set this in the normal settings.
And before you try again, neither z4root nor any other sw that uses rageagainstthecage is working.
The main reason I need root is to get my Tablet to see Ad-Hoc Networks. Specifically I have WIFI Router on my phone and my laptop sees/connects to the phone fine, but the tablet will not see the access point. I know that there are fixes for this that people have come up with but it requires root access.
Oh, and I have a Windows based phone (Touch Pro 2), so I can't get the bluetooth tethering option to work either.

Hmm. Others have gotten WM phones to work with BT tethering.
When I try to associate the Archos 101, they attempt to pair and then my phone says "it (the tablet) doesn't have any services that we are interested in". That statement on my phone is so enfuriating because I'll be the judge of what services I'm interested in having my phone use. My old XV6800 (Titan) did bluetooth tethering like a charm, and if it were still alive, I'd even consider going back to it.
Yup I'd be happy non rooting it if I could just get tethering to work.

I tried what is on post #5 here and this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10022941&postcount=4
so far, the combination of both things have made a big difference in the performance of my A70. It's a pretty smooth experience now.
ADW and Launcher Pro
I'm glad my help with Launcher Pro helped you. I installed the new ADW Launcher EX yesterday. I will have to say, It is faster depending on the settings. I used the "Fast" [reset profile. Right off the bat it was flying faster than launcher pro. I would suggest that launcher now that it has been revamped.

Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and just received my g tablet today. I followed the instructions for installing cwmod and tnt lite 4.40 and everything went great. However, I've run into a few issues. When trying to download angry birds it hangs at 15%. I have tried multiple times to kill the download and restart it with the same results.
I'm also new to Android. Is there a way to set things up so my gmail is not accessible to anyone who picks up my tablet? I could also use a recommendation for a good video player that plays .avi files. Another problem I'm having is that whenever I try to play a music file in either the native music player or winamp, the app crashes. Everyone told me how much better android is than apple but so far im not that impressed. Can anyone make some recommendations so I can see the full potential of this tablet? Thanks in advance!
I just upgraded from 4.2 to 4.4.0 and don't have any of the issues you are referring to. I was previously getting a couple of force closes that I don't have anymore with 4.4 which makes me happy. I just confirmed movies play, but I don't have any songs loaded to test that. Hopefully someone here with greater knowledge will chime in quickly. You made a good choice going with Android - don't give up hope. It does take a little more effort to get it setup the way you want it, but the beauty is that you HAVE a lot of choices which iOS does not allow. You'll get there, and then you will love it.

Have you tried clearing caches? Wiping data? Many times those two simple things (which are usually recommended procedure after flashing a new ROM0 will clear up all kinds of problems.
With the latest TNTL you should be able to activate the lock screen. You'll need to set up a shortcut through your launcher to a security settings screen that isn't shown by default. That will allow you to enter a password, pin or unlock pattern.
Update: Just realized camera isn't working either. As for the Angry Birds problem, I have downloaded and installed other apps with no problem but for some reason Angry Birds hangs at 15% - super frustrating! Also, is there a way to do a screen capture? Thanks in advance!
I had a similar problem
You really need to check the error code to verify. I was having a similar issue and I found an article to resolve my issue.
This worked for me but like I said you need to check if you are receiving an error when attempting to install.
I would only do what this little fixit instructs to fix

The caveat with the android over apple is the versatility and personal control over how you get to use your device. That said, it requires a little bit of effort, research, and frustration to get it all to work perfectly if you choose to use the latest builds. If you want the least amount of problems use the most stable build (which is usually not the most latest build) Once you get use to it, using the latest build with bugs won't be so intimidating and frustrating...maybe still frustrating

If the camera is not working, you definitely want to do a data wipe (this is a GTablet, correct? I ask because VEGA and Adam users have tried to use TNT Lite before, and their cameras would definitely break).
As for screen capture, I used ddms (in the Android SDK).
Hello,
It has been a while since I bought my archos 70IT and since the beginning, it kept freezing a lot, I had to kill all the apps every 2 minutes...
So I didn't really use it but now I want to use it again. I have installed Urukdroid because I thought maybe I could solve this problem by lowing the memory level where the device kills the apps... But know, the problem appears even more often than before... I don't know what to do... Sometimes it freezes when I use the menu, or when I'm on Google Play or when I use some apps, I don't think there is a specific trigger, only the memory. It is the 250MB hard drive model.
The screens stops and I can't do anything but reset the device.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you.
Please do yourself a favor and read the UrukDroid threads.
It is clearly stated that UD isn't really suited for the hd versions of the tablet, as it is installed on the HD, not the internal sd, wich means everytime the hd powers down the os is stalled, or the hd can't power down.
The only thing you can try is the orginal fw.
Wich Apps did you install?
I installed the market with arctools but the device froze even before it.
I also remember the device freezing when I transefered some media with the USB connection, before I installed UD.
If I shouldn't use UD, what is the best way to be root then? I mean, on a HD device.
Thanks!

Check there if it is working with the A70H.
I don't even have my A70S anymore to check it ( moved to Ainol Novo 7 Elf II ).
P.S.:
Is there always a trafficjam on saturday afternoon around toulouse?
Drove by last saturday and it was bad ( not as bad as lyon though , but...)
Thanks but I think I will stay not rooted and without installing google play and google apps. It's not as good as it could but it seems to work better...
By the way, does anyone know a good calendar app available on appslib? To import calendars by url.
PS: Yeah, the Toulouse traffic is really bad! That's the main drawback of this city I think...
Hi all,
This is my first post on the forum!
I have a XT910 bought in Nov 2011. The phone is from Asia Region. I faced the well known SMS issue on this device on Asia Retail 4.0.4. Initially there was no problem but later it just randomly started. Fed up I rooted the device and flashed the EU JB Official ROM from this forum. Later on I have since installed Cyanogenmod (using Safestrap and done a dual boot with my stock ROM intact). The problem I face these days is that the phone is too slow / sluggish / unresponsive at times and it really drives me crazy. The problem occurs usually when I open some heavy app like Chrome or do some "new" activity .. like a new app installed and configured etc. The thing is this slowness is visible in both the stock / cyanogen mod. I have been on CM10.2 to 12.1 now but the problem exists always. I have done multiple reflashes / formats for CM as well as factory resets for the stock ROM but the issue does eventually crop up after a few days. I have observed the following though using various tools:
1. RAM usage is almost touching 85%+ but rarely do I have less than 50MB of RAM left.
2. Processor also seems to be okay
3. The I/O on the disk is too high tough. Sometimes I have seen GB of data "written" just when opening a blank chrome window (using System Monitor Lite). I wonder if my on board flash memory is to blame? I also have an external class 10 16GB SD card, though removing this doesn't seem to give any performance boosts.
I have been facing this problem almost since I moved to the EU JB ROM about 1.5 yrs back, though I must say the Asia Retail ICS wasn't really fast either.
What are your opinions / troubleshooting hints that I can follow or do you think the phone is plain simple too old and really needs to be replaced?
Thanks.

Hello again guys..
100+ views but no replies!!!
Any help will be appreciated Thanks.
Installed the monitor. That monitor app reports estimated transfer speed not amount data transferred. I.e. installing chrome is done at about 790kb/s. Since I don't have the paid version I cannot see how much it takes to open chrome. At least you know that it is not heat forcing your processor to throttle.
Doing RSD can be a better approach. And then factory reset WITH internal sdcard deletion. Just in case you have bad file system.
You explain in the post that first rooted then installed EU ROM over an asian phone. I don't think it would have worked but if it did, maybe rom is not working well with your kernel. Do a Rsd or flash the corresponding kernel. Second choice have gave me troubles before, so be ready to rsd.
Minimal installation of gapps. Avoiding heavy launchers like aviate. Using .nomedia files to disable media search in certain folders.
Not messing with ad blockers or location services or permissions for a while. Also ohmster had an interesting post in cm11 thread about what he does to get a better experience.
If I read the right page, LineageOS never officially supported the Tab S3 and there don't seem to be any other official ROMs judging by this thread. Are there any stable and/or well maintained Android 10 or 11 ROMs for the SM-T820 worth abandoning the dated but stable stock ROM?
I tried a few - no real use.
back to stock.
after setting everything up from scratch, meaning no userdata or such, it felt a LOT faster than before.
What helped me a lot was removing all google play services (with link2sd, I just uninstalled everything with root) and switching to vanced youtube (so I still get to watch yt).
For google drive and such I can use the browser versions and now without a trace of google the tablet is a lot faster. I'm sure that properly set up microg wouldn't affect performance at all but I don't have the time to reset again. If I manage to do it some day I'll post a tutorial, and in the mean time someone else can try this method.

Giving my Google passwords to a 3rd party app doesn't feel good to me. I switched instead to watching YouTube on Firefox some time ago, with the ad blocker plugins. The only downside is that on mobile, after a video ends and the next loads, the video goes out of full screen.
As to removing bloatware, can the device be rooted without causing issues with Samsung's stock interface?
I noticed there's an official Pie release. Unfortunately, I don't think I qualify for normal OTA upgrade as I have a Wifi only tablet and no carrier. Also, this is a demo tablet not intended for sale, so additional lockouts might apply there.
Does anyone know if the official Pie upgrade should work with the demo model, and have any experience with the Android 9 firmware from Samsung?
At the moment I'm away from my PC so I can't flash isn't Odin. I'm kinda itching to get the upgrade on my tablet and wondering if there's a way to reliably flash without even a PC to root my tablet.

Eventually, I figured out how to flash a Wifi-only SM-T820 LDU (live demo model) from Android 7.0 to the last Android 9 firmware Samsung released for the model. A good upgrade and very stable.
