Oneplus x is a really nice phone , i especially like its form factor which is why i brought one just today , but i read a thread where oneplus did not release MM kernel sources and this phone's production stopped. Now i am thinking about giving it back as it would be nearly impossible for future development.
What would anyone who is a present owner suggest in such a situation ? I am only getting this phone because of its 5 inch form factor and good development team.
P.s i know onyx got some top class dev's and Nougat is already on its way, i do not doubt their potential but just this phones future development progress.

I am a person who is easily bored out using the same rom , i like aosp but i tend to move between different roms (once a week) just because of that . The fact that this phone has CM13 , MIUI (WIP) , SAILFISH OS excited me the most. This is the only reason i look for a phone with good dev community in it which partially require OEM & Chipset supplier support to release drivers.
Of course the phone excites me but I've looped through so many phones that the phone hardware alone does not excite me anymore.

thank you for the reply , but might i ask why . I always thought OEM's have to release the kernel sources or the phone will have less chance to be supported by next android version because dev's have to depend on hacks to get things working which is never ideal.

No. Theoretically the only thing we need kernel wise is the DTS and a few drivers. We can pull the source for the 801 from Qualcomm themselves. We don't need an OEM outside of that
I'm really interested in getting this phone, I have skipped the Note 8 until I see what this phone brings, and from what I saw at the presentation I looks like an AWESOME phone, but when I look at past Huawei flagships (mate 9, P9, etc) almost non-existing major updates, custom roms support and mods I start thinking if paying a premium price for a phone like this its really worth for a person like me who likes to play around with rooting, modding and installing custom roms in my devices or should I play safe and get a Samsung or Pixel device.
No. Do not buy Huawei if modding is important.
Non existent with previous mate 9 and barely with mate 8.

To be honest you are better off not getting any flagship if you like modding. The pixel is a pain to dev for to the point that many devs are not getting the new pixel or even supporting it. Samsung well we all know that dev support for that is a joke.

If modding is your thing then I would look at something like one plus. Things to avoid are devices with dual partition setup. The pixel showed how much devs dont want to deal with that.
Things to look out for are things like kernel source being up to date which I hate to say knocks 90% of the China based OEM out of it. Maybe the Euro version of samsung devices might be OK but even they get little to no real devs support. I would look around the site. See what devices have real support. No I am not talking about tons of los based roms. That is not development. I mean real development with system mods and hardware tweaks.

Things like what? The one bonus is that with one plus it can be fixed for the most part as to where even the kernel code on huawei devices is useless.

This I agree with but many of the OEM are opting out of sdcards ever since google removed all the code fore native sdcard support from android years ago. But to be hones 64gb is more then enough for a mobile device. Mix that with some common sense (backing up stuff. No I dont mean cloud backup lol)

Why not? You can get systemless root (Exynos) or TWRP installed classic root (Snapdragon) for Note8.
Sure Knox and/or SafetyNet gets tripped, but that's the price to pay for rooting.
But you can root current flagship phones and there's plenty of modding community for Note8.

Samsung based roms are not development. Samsung devices have sucked for development for years. This is why main stream developers don't get that device.
Ok, thanks for the info. I haven't followed the scene. Just installed a good LO fork on my Note3 and it is working wonders (sans NFC and GPS/camera performance is generic).

Yes. The 6p (minus the battery issues) is good for rom development. It will get support from 3rd parties for at least another 2 years.
I would say the one plus 3 or 3t

Any one of the Sony devices as they have a good development setup.

Problem with OP (I switched from OP5 to IP7+ just recently because I kept hearing rumors that OP5T/OP6 might come out and I was afraid the value might drop to a point where re-sale value is no longer profitable..IP7+ is awesome in many ways, but my initial goal was getting LG V30 but now it seems Mate 10 is much wiser choice because of its awesome screen to body ratio + 16:9 aspect ratio which currently IMO is way better than 18:9/18:9.5 considering full app support, including youtube and so on) is that it does not have its own identity - its basically an iphone clone design wise and with it you look like a wannabe iphone user . Its awesome in performance but that identity thing sucks + they recent actions where they discontinue a model even before 6 month span is just plain ridiculous (OP3 to OP3T and then OP3T to OP5 all done within 1 year)..

Tell that to the fact that they offer how to build aosp for their devices, have worked with developers on it as well as pretty much made the theme engine that susbstratum works off of.
Will there be loses. Sure but that is the difference between aosp and using code made for the device. You don't always get all the features of the device with aosp. But that is not the point of using aosp. It's to learn.

Yes, but with sony aosp you get 13% quality of camera comparing it to stock, so they are stupid.
Well custom rom/kernel development for this device was pathetic enough now the ****ty people at asustek decided
not to update the ultra to oreo. They just updated zenfone deluxe and posted @ zentalk fourms that ultra will not be getting the oreo. Reasoing : in order to ensure the stability of ZU680KL system and user's best experience,
the company finally decided not to plan further software update to Android 8.0 system which
caused inconvenience. We are very sorry thank you for your ASUS product. Support . Well i request u all to send email or contact the asustek in anyway and make them to update the ultra to oreo . What a shame. Its one of the better devices i have owned screenshot of conversation is attached. :crying::crying:

while i had this device, I tried to port miui eu (deodexed) from the mi max 2 pro (same processor, resolution, graphics) but could only get to mi boot animation. Not many resources out there (mostly old and understand porting is a very case-by-case task)
might get interested in the device again if some rom development starts. Weird as it has a qcom processor but all interest is in samsung, sony, and even some smaller Chinese brands but not this one. (6.8 screen maybe) admit i have very little knowledge if any on development but tried it anyway
So that certainly means kiss off Android p. Asus definitely doesn't mind stepping on their own crank. Such a great / fast device, but it was almost abandoned from the first few months.

1. I've seen a lot of POCO F1 photos and I'm not exactly sure if it has a good body around it so that I could not touch the screen by accident with that hand which is holding the phone while the other is writing SMS. If You need a comparison Samsung S5 and A8 2018 was good at it and they are what I would like the POCO F1 to be.
2. Is the awsesome CPU the only good pieace of hardware in that phone. How about RAM and storage speed?
3. Will POCO br treated like Mi phones or like Redmi phones?
4. How many Android upgrades wil it receive?
5. Is it Project Treble fully compatible?

The SD845 is not a CPU, it's an SoC comprised of many components. This includes Kyro CPU clusters, DSP, Adreno, x20 modem, LPDDR4x support (RAM), and UFS 2.1 support.
Third & fourth question is impossible to answer, the company hasn't made a formal promise. This phone will cannibalize their sales, so who knows.

1. I don't think that will be a issue during normal use... It will be issue in any phone of You use it without a proper grip or while typing and holding with the same hand...
2. In simple words RAM and storage should also be really Good... Overall performance of this device will be really Amazing so need not worry about RAM or storage speed bottleneck...
3. It will be totally different from Mi and Redmi... Poco will be independent in software and development while sales and services will be carried out by Xiaomi...
4. 1. Poco F1 is amongst the many other phones which boasts of so called "bezel less" body. So clearly your question may be asked for any such phone.
2. Apart from CPU, POCO has a very good GPU, LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 Storage. So no it's just not the CPU alone.
3. POCO will be treated like a separate phone series and we might see POCO F"2" in coming days. (Realme 1 followed by Realme 2).
4. Pie has been promised by Xiaomi and the phone might just see Android Q as well. Cannot really comment on that.
5. Any phone launching with Android Oreo or later out of the box has to be Project Treble compliant so YES.

2. Apart from the latest generation SOC, the ram and storage is also top notch. It has lpddr4x ram and UFS 2.1 storage so pretty fast and latest gen again.
3 & 4. With kernel source already released, camera2api enabled by default and bootloader unlocked who cares about company software support. We have excellent devs who will make this device fly for a long long time, incidentally the company has promised android P update in the 4th quarter and android security updates regularly.

WOW Thanks of thinking of me so high but with all do respect I have to disagree. Doing reaserch is not enought to become an expert. In my opinion You have to do some practise: configre many different phones, flash custom roms, service phones, try different apps and be an accual DEV.

Let it go... I just got My hands on the device yesterday when it arrived... Its really Good... Software seems to be not yet optimised properly so it should perform far Better in a few weeks... The rounded edges are a little to big, certain UI and app elements seem to hide behind it...
Agree to that, the rounded edges at the bottom area were certainly unnecessary, so far this is the first annoyance with the phone

I had lenovo z2 plus. I guess kind of similar case like poco, 800 series soc in 20000 inr but it has ton of development and still holds till date.

Hi, I come from the same phone! I think we were very lucky with our phone's community. So far indeed there's no much development but having TWRP and magisk is really a big step forward.
We just have to be patient. Or you can try to learn yourself and help the community

That's why I'm holding up on buying this phone and either wait for OnePlus 6T, get the OnePlus 6 or wait until a custom ROMs start rolling for the Poco.
No custom ROMs = dead phone imho

The kernel source is incomplete, Wifi and Sound needs to be fixed. It will take time, and people are working on it. I already fixed wifi on my kernel fork but fixing sound is a whole other problem.

That's great. Thank you. But why did poco bragg about releasing sources.. whats the point of releasing them incomplete. So much for supporting custom community.

Just wait for some months & the custom rom development will be great. I mean it will be similar to zenfone max pro m1, note 5 pro etc. Bcz of the popularity of the device. The more people will buy the phone, the more developers want to make official custom roms for the device.
Xiaomi, Oneplus & premium phones of different companies get custom roms bcz of their popularity. So poco f1 will have a big custom rom development community with almost every official custom rom. Peace.

It's basically how it has always been for custom kernels from everyone. Linux kernel itself is free and open, yes, but the DRIVERS for the Wifi and DAC/DSP stuff may not be.
I'd sooner blame Qualcomm than Xiaomi tbh, sure they make good hardware but Qcom are notoriously shady with business practices.

Because those drivers are proprietary codes, most companies don't want their sources to be released/leaked in public, so you need to fix it by your own. Torvalds had even shown Nvidia a middle finger for that in public but they are not alone. The bigger a company, more they are away from FSF (except few).
Xiaomi released what it could and they always release half codes, sometimes they gobble up camera, sometimes wifi or whatever they feel like. Most of the Xiaomi phones will not have the same camera output as it were in MIUI because of this.

Oh. So behind every custom rom for any device, dev has to work a lot to make it stable or even to get the rom into existence.
