Ambient display - Honor 8X Questions & Answers

Hello,
I just switched from OnePLus 3T to Honor 8x and I really miss Ambient display feature - is there any way how to turn it on to instant check time and notifications? It's especially good during night so you can check time and it will not blow your eyes
Thank you for any tips!

I think you need an AMOLED screen for this feature, which the 3T has, or it would eat up battery. The 8X doesn't. But it does have raise to wake (in Smart Assistance settings) which is useful.

Aha, thanks! I saw a lot of guides online "enable on any Android" so I trough it's everywhere... Shame but still a decent phone

Buy recommendation please :)

Hi,
i wanted to buy a new phone with a budeg up to 500 euro (580usd) but if possibly more around 400€
it has to have an oled display and an atleast okayish camera.
The mate 10pro is my favorit but i heard some annoying things about the display.
1st of all that the display isnt birght engough. Sure oleds arent as bright but i heard that the mate 10 pro's display is just to dark for normal use
2nd that it changes brightness when opening apps.
3rd that auto birghtness is auto activated after locking the phone
4th thing i heard is that the Kirin overheats preatty fast and just isnt good overall (i know it lacks behind its Snapdragon counterpart but thermal throttle after a few mins shouldnt be normal)
What can you tell me to this points?
Oh and i have not choosen any phone atm so i am open for other recommendations but iPhones and S8/S9 because they failed badly at droptests.
Thank you all

1. Display is definitely bright enough, not sure where you read/heard that but it's great on sunny days.
2. I've never experienced it changing brightness when opening any apps.
3. Auto brightness turns itself on when the phone is rebooted not when the screen is locked.
4. The only intensive game I have on my phone is asphalt 9 and I can play it for well over a hour with minimal heat, it gets warmish but nothing out of the ordinary.
I'd definitely recommend this phone over any other

TheAndroid do you own the pro?
I read a lot about the phone here on xda and it seems like that the pro with the amoled changes brightness and got clouding (bright spots).
Don't know if every one got it or just a few. It's always kinda hard to tell because if everything works fine you don't open up a forum randomly and say that you don't have clouding or brightness changes.
In generell it sounds pretty good and, at least I read it here, there will be a really big update that increases performance and battery life

Like I said, I've never noticed any change in brightness in any app, also, never had a issue with clouding (bright spots), if you chose to get a Mate 10 Pro and it had such issue tho, I imagine Huawei would repair it or send you a replacement.

Sometimes it can just be quality control issues so a couple devices will suffer from it.

My Mate 10 Pro has 0 problem
Sent from my BLA-L29 using Tapatalk
Im bored atm so i scrolled a bit and copied multiple statments from other mate 10/pro (idk) users in this forum
*One little flaw to mention. I have some clouding. At moderate to low brightness level, grey color is the worst. (screen shot was taken by another phone, so in real life it isn't that bad)
The problem is less prominent at higher brightness levels.
Anyone else have the same issue?
*yes same problem on mate 10 pro FRANCE ... REGRETE ALMOST MY PURCHASE
*I've got the same green tint on lower brightness (30% and lower)
Did any of you guys exchange it and got a better screen with no green tint on grey screens?
*I got my replacement device today and it also had that clouding issue! Really pisses me off because one of my main use cases on my mobile devices is reading pocket articles in dark mode. This is where I could see the yellow clouding very clearly. The replacement also had a defective fingerprint scanner (did not work at all not even during setup).
Now I'm waiting for my third device, if that one still has clouding (even if it is slightly) then I'm going to switch to the XL2. At least it doesn't have clouding.
This is meant to be huaweis high end device, such issues are nogos for me. Even my much cheaper but beloved Moto Z Play doesn't have this issue.
To summ it all up: There are many ppl with problems like clouding, brighter on left/right side and i somewhere read that a guy got a greenish matrix over his display. But there are also alot saying that theirs works fine and when you buy a phone and everything is fine most ppl dont open up a forum to say that it is fine but when there is a problem they all do it....
This awnser is not really for you two guys but for the ppl who maybe visit this thread and want to know whats up.
I'll get to a store next days and see if they got one there if it is fine i'll buy it and if i still remember or if it is broke you'll see me agian here
I don't have any of those problem on my Mate 10 Pro BLA-A09, the only time that you will see that the brightness changes is when watching hdr videos on YouTube

No issues for me with the same variant. Had the phone for almost a year. HDR with you tube does impact it, and moving from a light to dark environment will change as it should. This phone handles auto brightness much better than my Galaxy 8 + does.

Bomber... I bought a brand new one on swappa recently and it remains as brand new. I want to root it and do advanced things, but it is not as easy as I thought. I will probably sell mine in the next day or 2. Pm me if you are interested. I live in Florida and have good ebay and swappa ratings. The phone is in mint condition with all original accessories, box, and plastic covers.
Don't have the Mate 10 Pro, have a Mate 10 and 2 Mate 9's, one Mate 9 is my spare phone and the second is my wife's main phone. No quality issue's whatsoever, no heating when using normally like for example the Note 4 (have also 2 of them for the S-pen function) which melts nearly when doing normal updates. No issue's with brightness, true they have no oled display's. What I am trying to say is that you can always find negative feedback over ANY phone and ANY brand. Some people will ***** about anything. Sure, you can have bad luck to...but I almost have the feeling you are searching for an excuse not to buy the mate 10...Good luck!

It really seems a bit like I'm searching for excuses but there are a lot last Gen flagship for around 400€. It is hard to find out what's really up who is just hating, who is just a fanboy. Watched hours of YouTube about phone x, y and z but they all say something else. BTW the comments on videos where they compare phones are hilarious
Yes, you will reach a point - have reached a point you don't know any more what to believe or think...Don't forget that you will only find negative feedback on the net. People in general don't post how happy they are with a phone, no they will post rather how dissatisfied they are.

Sometimes you just gotta take the leap, I had a Nexus 5x despite all the bootloop issues that where proven by other users and I didn't have 1 bootloop in 2 years, it's worth saying though, you won't find one device anywhere that someone hasn't complained about.

True. I'll probably buy the mate 10 pro becasue idk it just feels better to me. With the upcoming updates to emui 8.2 and android pie it should be near perfect. Sure it got problems with custom roms twrp aso. but if i want to do it i'll find a way
The only way i wont take it is when the OP6 drops to 400 too
I think the Mate 10 Pro is a brilliant phone for the money it now goes for. Sure it's not perfect, but is there any such thing? It has one of biggest batteries you can find in a phone today with fast charging, a brilliant 18:9 OLED display with no notch and very slim bezels, face unlocking, Leica cameras with a fantastic b&w sensor, night mode, stereo speakers, ip67, 128gb storage, 6gb ram, kirin970 with npu, ir blaster... All for a THIRD of the price of a Note 9. Yes the K970 is a bit slower than the Sd845, no it doesn't have a headphone jack and it doesn't have expandable memory. But I personally never use these, and K970 is still more than fast enough - I have never seen one hiccup or stutter. With the right launcher and wallpapers etc your can pretty much make EMUI look like 'stock' Android if you want. Just buy it!

Btw in case it's not obvious, I own one and I'm super picky about stuff like screens etc but there really isn't anything I can fault with it. Everything just works. The only real negative is the lack of updates - Huawei tends to push out updates every 3 or 4 months which isn't great, but better than nothing and is no worse than most of the other OEMs. If the latest updates are the most important thing to you, stick with pixels, OnePlus or Android One.

Actually the camera is not by Leica just the lense and it is one made out of plastic.... Oh and you probably ment the SD835 the kirin lacks a bit behind it but it should be okay with the gpu boost update and android pie is incomming for the mate 10
Im using mate 10 not pro. Only have problems on my screen at bottom have yellowish tint. Already send to huawei and change the lcd two times, still the same. I guess i must live with it. To be honest, this is the best phone i have ever used. Very snappy, top notch camera, proc not have overheat issue when playing heavy games unlike my sd821 before.

I meant the 845 as it is the latest available Snapdragon chip in phones like the OnePlus 6 etc. My point is that the chip although not the most powerful is still plenty fast enough for most people's needs and it comfortably handles pretty much anything you throw at it. The camera in my opinion is good - when I take a photo the results to me look very good. Am I a professional photographer? No, if I was I'd have a DSLR.
As an overall package, including price, I believe that this phone is one of the best you can get right now. Of course, this will change, and if OnePlus release the 6t with stereo speakers and a 3800-4000 mah battery, I may well get that.

Is this the best smartphone of 2018 in your opinion?

Hey guys, so I've been really overthinking all day if I should get the Mate 20 Pro. The 3 main phones I've been using this year are S9+, OP6, Note 9 but I won't count the S9+ as the Note 9 is exactly the same but with bigger battery, bigger screen and the spen (it's cool the first week and then I forget about it, but I do get others use it on a daily basis so there's no competition for the note) . So both the Note 9 and OP6 have things that I've personally missed from the other device, however, at least on paper, the Mate 20 Pro seems to have it almost all.
What I missed about Samsung while owned OP6:
*Better OLED screen colors, higher resolution and brightness
*Stereo speakers
*Wireless charging
*IP68 peace of mind
*Higher volume with BT earbuds (don't know if 20 Pro has this)
*Not really missed but wanted the 4000+ mah battery on Note 9
*Always on display
*Samsung pay with MST (but no big deal since still have my Gear S3 frontier watch)
*One-handed mode
What I miss about OP6 currently on Note 9:
*Really fast/fluid/smooth UI (although I've heard some reviewers complaining about the 20 Pro dropping frames but at least should be better than lagsung)
*Native gestures navigation
*Actually FAST Cable charging
*Lighter and smaller body (pocketability and one hand use)
*Fast unlock, either fingerprint or face/iris are slow on Note 9
*OP6 didn't drain too much battery on idle, on days that I almost don't use the phone Note 9 4000 mah battery performs very similar to 3300 mah battery on OP6
Better than both previous phones/new to me features really looking forward to try:
*3D fast and secure face unlock
*In-display fingerprint sensor
*Raise to wake
*Knuckle gestures to start multitasking, take screenshots, launch apps, etc.
*Triple camera, amazing low light performance
What I think I'd miss if I switch to Mate 20 Pro:
*Slightly wider and notchless screen on Note 9, maybe better colors and brighness?
*BT audio? No dolby atmos, lower volume?
*Stereo speakers are worse than note 9 according to reviewers
*Fingerprint gesture to bring down notification panel
I've seen a lot of comments on other forums and on YouTube claiming the Note 9 is "waaaay better" than the Mate 20 pro. Only advantages I could think of are spen (but I don't really use it) and headphone jack (I haven't touched it in any phone in the last 3 years since I use strictly BT only, Fc me, right?)
So, am I missing anything that would make the Note 9 superior or that I would miss if I switch to the Mate 20 pro? Or do you think this is absolutely the best phone of 2018?
EDIT: it also has IR blaster and remote control app, missed this since Note 4 lol!
Hi
Your post is really interesting.. I think you used 3 of the most important smartphone based on Android OS.
Sincerely.. Actually I have in my hand the Samsung galaxy note 8...i bought it before buy for my job an iPad with the apple pencil.. After that.. I forgot to use the spen.. Personally.. Too little the screen to be used, for example, to take note during a meeting... This is my personal feedback.
So, for this reason I'm not sure to replace now my note with the note 9.. The most important feature, the S pen, is only an option for me... S9 plus? Yes.. But some hardware parts are already, older than a note 9 hardware set...
Also, after 8 years with only Samsung devices I want try something of different.. And now I think that with this mate 20 pro, maybe I found what I need... High performance, wireless charge, amazing camera, pc mode (maybe can be a interesting features if can be used without any extra hardware such Samsung dex, but also the note 9 now can be used without it).. Nice design...
So, actually I think this will be my next smartphone... I'm. 90% sure...

I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I am 90% sure as well, only thing I just found out I'd miss that I first thought I wouldn't is always on display. Mate 20 Pro has it but it is just the clock and battery, no third party notifications. So if it doesn't show notification I think I'll just turn off AOD to save battery, however, if it doesn't have the RGB LED either, I think I'd miss something to check notifications at a glance

Yes is true but also in this case for my opinion it depend of the normal use of everyone's...
For a example.. Personally I deactivate on my note 8 the always on function because I use for my job and personal use the smartphone really every moment, and switch on the screen to check he notification, is not a problem for me..
The battery life is another important point for me... As I explained before, I abuse of my smartphone usually.. Mail.. WhatsApp, web surfing and a lot of special application such autocad, notes... The only apps that I don't use are the games...
Anyway, I noticed that after some months Samsung device became to have a battery drain.. In some case I solved using avast antivirus app, because his app kill some background process, that wasn't not stopped using the software integrated in Samsung device.
I know that now we have a bigger batteryin both devices, but I want try another company and check if the battery drain can be not a problem anymore.. Also.. I want try the ai support of huawei that promise to solve the problem of the bad performance after day after day...

Same here man, my pixel 2 xl aod is brilliant, and dunno how i will cope with mate 20 pro aod... Like why is soo hard for them to implement this? Still i pulled the trigger and pre ordered it, will keep pixel for a week after just in csse and see if get get used to it not seeing notifications on the aod...
For me is an absolutely yes to your question I never had anything like this Mate 20 Pro it is even better than P20 Pro! Wireless charging, amazing screen amazing battery life fast graphics and processor its all full of future proof! And aesthetically is gorgeous!
The phone seems to be gorgeous, but EMUI is horrible...
No 3rd party notifications for AOD and no expandable lockscreen notifications (no whatsapp quick reply or mail delete)

I also tried the P20 Pro and gave it back because of that damn EMUI... I hoped that they would fix the expandable LS and AOD but nothing happened. That's why I won't buy any phone from Huawei.
Seems like Huawei does not think that these are bugs....
What do they think are the advantages of taking these features out? I don't get it
So as an update to my first post, here's a few more cons of the Mate 20 Pro (some only apply in the US)
*Everyone seems to dislike EMUI
*Problems with third party lunchers
*Worse signal in the US, no wifi calling and no LTE bands 66 and 71 (T-Mobile)
*Pissible spying
*When using the hiding notch option the screen does look noticeable smaller vs Note 9 (picture attached) I'm not sure if the downgrade in display size would bother me
In this thread everyone seems to be against the Mate 20 pro (vs Note 9)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-9/how-to/note-9-vs-huawei-mate-20-t3855360
Damn, I'm sill laying to the side of getting the 20 Pro but this just made the decision harder
Today I tested Mate 20 Pro:
- High quality hardwares: very good build quality, Oled screen look better than Note 9 ( better white balance, higher brightness ) ...
- Seem very good battery life, better than Note 9 and Xs Max
- I don't like EMIUI too: not really modern ( clean and clear ), some micro stutter lags
- Portrait Backlighting: bad quality compare to Note 9 especially compare yo Xs Max

Awesome thank you so much for the feedback! I was really concerned about screen colors and brightness feeling as a downgrade from Note 9
Would you say the micro stutters are worse than in Note 9? It always drop frames when opening recent apps menu, switching apps, unlocking animation, adjusting split screen, operating split screen both apps start to lag, opening swiftkey keyboard, especially on google translate app I'm not sure why but it lags really bad (relatively for a $1000+ phone) like 4-5 seconds to open swiftkey keyboard after tapping on text box. I know EMUI is no OxygenOS but I was hoping at least some improvement from Note 9. Just as Note 9 is not perfect but improvement from Note is very welcome.

You have the BOE display, right? I am really really reaaaally dissapointed with the LG display, it's almost a deal breaker I am still thinking about it depends if I find enough workarounds for other problems.
What i like about the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is:
The design
The screen
The performance
The battery life
The face unlock
The onscreen fingerprint reader
The camera
Emui is alright.
Huawei could do better with:
Faster updates. (I'm on 108 and other people are on 122 and even 128? firmwares). More customization options such as custom font, making the notification screen black and or transparent (same with quick settings, it's black but no transparent), removing certain statusbar icons. Giving us the option to completely remove all bloatware that can be installed trough the Google Play Store.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Realme X2 Pro, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Realme X2 Pro is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Wasted opportunity
I have a bug. I put animations to 0 but after a while they come back to 10.. It is so annoying
Another bug, the dark mode deactivate itself and no disturbing mode doesn't work for some reason, I still receive audio notifications. Tha animation speed is not always the same, that means we have a beta software?
All good, worth buying phone.
Fantastic phone 12 gb 256 rom.The best value for money deal.
Hardware is good, but bad software and open source support.
No open source support means this phone will not have roms.
Now the BL still cause the fingerprint broken, that is bad.
I'm pee going from Galaxy note 8 to realme X2 pro second, you make better photos or at least like 8 notes
Require a lot of software work, realme has a very good camera but to make the same software like Samsung or apple... It is milion miles away..
I simply love this phone. I never though that it's that awesome!
I love this phone, i have 8/128 blu eu (paid 369 eur), no problem, very simple to change font (i am mad about Google Sans), good camera, very smooth, charge is simply unbelivable. So, for its price is super.

Install an apk (see on xda) and change region to Myanmar, than select option "dai support".
You can use zfont always and a ttf of yours.

In stock on ebay Realme Store, i combined Realme coupon with ebay one
Experiences with Realme X2 Pro
I’ve used the X2 Pro now for 1 1/2 weeks (but only parallel to my old Moto G4 Plus, yet) and this are my experiences:
First Impression:
This is a heavy phone! (Not compared to other current similar phones but compared to earlier phones.) I thought 30g or 40g won’t make a difference but indeed they do. I prefer the lighter Moto G4 Plus, especially if I have to hold it for some longer times.
Software appears a bit chaotic/overwhelming. Even if there actually aren’t so many Realme apps, I felt like “So many apps and functions.” “Why does this system setting requires permissions to open it. I want to open settings (especially settings I don’t know about) without granting any permissions. … Oh OK, it’s not a normal setting but an additional app.” “This menu looks a bit clunky, I don’t know why.” But it's not as bad as some people tell.
I don’t like these shiny backside design so much but it looks better than expected.
The charging is really fast (but no surprise as I’ve seen and read many tests and it was one of the main reasons to buy these).
It works like expected. Apparently the development and innovations have slowed down. But the new features (fast charge, multi cam) are nice.
I like:
SuperVOOC fast charging. It’s really useful and stunning.
Internet Connection Control: It’s possible to decline network access (wifi and mobile separate) for apps. So no need for a separate firewall app anymore.
Personal Information Protection: I like to prohibit access to contacts for WhatsApp and other prying apps. It’s useful to comply with GDPR and other data privacy laws.
No thermal throttling experienced. (I only tested it really superficially.)
GPS seems to work really fast and accurate.
I don’t like:
I still don’t like glass backsides.
They are heavy, they are way too fragile. I don’t get why every YouTuber/Tester a few years ago asked for more “high-grade” materials like glass. In the end everyone has to further bulk up these big phones with protective cases/bumpers and don’t even feel the original materials.
Sound quality of the speakers is worse than the sound quality of the much cheaper and older Moto G4 Plus. It’s equally loud but the lower frequencies / bass tones are missing a bit and it sounds a bit “thin”. Really stupid to be stingy on such cheap parts.
Sound quality of microphone sounds a bit tinny and misses bass tones. In video recordings the sound tend’s to be a bit quiet. Even though it was quite loud when tested with a voice recording app.
SIP telephony (Session Initiation Protocol) missing in dialer/caller app & system settings:
It would be nice if SIP telephony would be integrated in the system so that we don't need any separate app. I already found hidden SIP account settings in the system settings. And after I enter my account data and SIP server data, the phone even registers/connects to the server. But unfortunately incoming calls aren't displayed/signaled at all and outgoing calls aren't possible with the stock caller app.
Timer in the Clock App:
Not possible to set more than 2 timers at once.
The timer alarm stops too early. I'd prefer if the timer rings for about 5 minutes or so.
I really don't like the timer sound. And I haven't found any setting to change it, yet.
I really would want to see running timers (at least the one which is going off next) on the lock screen and in the notification center.
Camera produces oversaturated videos and photos. I would prefer a slightly more neutral image.
I had temporal problems with Bluetooth:
I wanted to connect my Sennheiser HD 4.40BT headphones but it wasn’t possible. I just could not see the headset in the Bluetooth device list. I tried it several times. I even found Bluetooth protocol settings in the developer system settings and tried to change them a bit, but it didn’t help and so I changed it back to default. On the next day without doing anything special I finally saw the HD 4.40BT in the list and was able to connect to them. With my Moto G4+ it was just: turning headphones on, enabling BT on G4+, finding them, connect, done – within seconds. I don’t know what’s the problem here with the X2 Pro, especially since it works now.
Another strange thing I experienced while trying to find my Bluetooth headphones in the list: Almost every Bluetooth device is only displayed with its Bluetooth MAC address instead of its name. I mean, I don’t know all these other devices (I was on the go when I tried it first and it probably were headphones, smartphones, etc. from other people). So maybe a few of these unknown devices just didn’t had any name; But I assume at least a few of them had names. But at the other hand the X2 Pro finds more BT devices than the Moto G4+ so who knows.
Additional whishes:
Internet Connection Control option for each app should be included in App Info (next to permission). Maybe also Personal Information Protection, Game Space Settings and so on could be integrated in App Info.
I’d like to have a wider (higher) on screen navigation button bar. (I prefer buttons over the gestures, but with this large display even the bottom border is a bit uncomfortable to reach.)
Easy & discreet locking (e.g. double tap, long pressed back button,...):
It's a feature I only miss because I had a smartphone with physical fingerprint sensor on the front before, which could also be used to lock the phone (like pressing the power button). It was convenient to lock the phone when it lays on the table with just one slight one finger press, without grabbing the phone, without using gestures, no matter which app or whatever is open. It would be great if Realme could include any solution on system level. The app (icon) to fast lock the phone was a nice little idea but maybe there could be an even better option to achieve this.
Neutral things (decent, but could be better):
Battery capacity is OK:
I easily get through the whole day and night. But in my experience smartphone batteries lose significant capacity over 1 or 2 years and it would be nice to have still enough capacity after 2-3 years.
Display performance in general OK:
Minimum brightness is good. Maximum brightness seems to be good, too. Color accuracy seem to be average.
Display has a greenish tint (easily visible with low brightness, harder to see but still there with high brightness; DC dimming and warm/cold color temperature setting doesn’t make a difference here).
90 Hz actually looks a bit more smooth than 60 Hz and it looks more smooth than Moto 4G+ (60 Hz). But Realme X2 Pro on 60 Hz feels more choppy/laggy/unsmooth than Moto G4+ with its 60 Hz. I just use 90 Hz.
Under consistent heavy load (long time benchmarking) the phone gets really hot. But I haven’t experienced any hot parts during casual gaming or during normal usage.
The caller/dialer app has a blacklist but blocked calls are redirected to the mailbox. I would prefer them to be declined or ignored.
In general the camera is decent.
The app UI is quite self-explanatory.
It's even possible to zoom kind of smoothly in videos if you press and hold the 1x / zoom button. It would be useful if it (only really mild/gentle) snaps to 1x/2x position, because otherwise it's hard to set exactly 1x/2x (native/optical) zoom while zooming smooth.
Picture quality is decent. It’s better than my older & cheaper Moto G4 Plus (less noise, better in dark conditions) so you see the development but it’s not top notch compared to current competitors.
Few tiny translation issues:
Some literal translations; blocked call notification states “Neu gesperrt 1 Anruf€ gesperrt” instead of “Neu gesperrt 1 Anruf gesperrt” or “Neu gesperrt 2 Anrufe gesperrt”;…. But I think most of the translations are really good.
Double Tap to Wake works decent but not perfect. Sometimes I have to double tap 2 or 3 times before the screen wakes up.
I don’t like the dimensions.
I already mentioned the weight in the first impression. But I would prefer a slightly smaller phone with a more traditional aspect ratio. Unfortunately there are no interesting offers on the market. But with big hands it’s still possible (not comfortable) to use this phone mostly one handed.
All in all I'm undecided how much I like the Realme X2 Pro. On the on hand 429 EUR is a lot money for such few improvements over an cheaper and 3-4 years old smartphone I previously used. On the other hand the price-performance ratio is probably the best on the western market compared to all the other products. I think the X2 Pro is a valuable, good product for most people that search an up-to-date phone.
Let's just hope that Realme delivers frequent and good quality software updates.
i have it only a few hours.
My SIM is still on the old phone. Blazingly fast. But I cannot find full disk encryption anywhere. If it's not supported, it will be sold in the following days.
Only big issue with this phone is the thickness. After mounts I still don't like it... With the case, because a brick. But all the rest is ok. Some bugs here and there... Normal
So far, so good.
Just one piece of information I've been looking for within the specifications of other phones but nobody details: Realme X2 Pro supports LDAC Bluetooth Codec. Maybe this is obvious for other people reading A2DP or LE, but not for me. Having a pair of Sony WH-H910N headphones is good to know I can have the best quality for them.

I've used the ASUS ROG Phone 3 for ~1 month, so Ask Me Anything!

Hi XDA,
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 3 earlier today. I reviewed the phone for the XDA Portal after having used it for nearly a month (I received it on June 26th and published my review on July 22nd.) The phone has a metric ton of features, so if you have any specific questions about the ROG Phone 3, feel free to ask me a question. I'll enable notifications for new replies in this thread so I'll answer them as they come in.
I recommend reading the following posts first to see if they answer any of your questions:
Our launch coverage: ASUS launches the ROG Phone 3 with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, 144Hz display, and 6000mAh battery
My review: ASUS ROG Phone 3 Review: The King of Gaming Smartphones is back
I have also answered a few questions about the phone already on Reddit.
Hi and thanks for the review.
So I have had Rog 2 since the launch and although it's great overall, it has some big issues on display side and I want to know if rog 3 also suffers from the same issues.
1.the first issue that almost everyone knows about is the gray color turning to reddish color on lower brightness levels especially on 120hz. You'll have to test this with gray color background in a dark room but I can notice it even in a normal lit room.
2. the screen is kind of grainy and has a lot of bandings. you can also test this by downloading a 5% gray picture and turn the brightness all the way down in a completely dark room and look for oled bandings and lines and grainyness!
3. Huge Black crush! If you search google for "black crush test" the first result is a reddit question that leads to a video of a test picture. On rog 2 only and only on 100% brightness all the squares up to 5 are visible but as we turn down the brightness almost all squares become black (although they actually should be gray) and we can only see the first three squares at the bottom.(255% 100% and 50%)
and that means if we want to see everything in true color and we are supposed to see, we have to use 100% brightness all the time which not only hurts the eyes, but also brings screen burn-ins in as soon as 3 2 months.
Here's the youtube link for black crush test

I hope you can check these issues and give us real life feedback

I am also interested in knowing abot this , and also if there is image retention at High brightness, can be checked by staying at a static page for 1mint or more the quick switching to to a gray image , like the chrome in dark mode with all tabs closed , I take I screenshot of it an zoom it and out it into full screen that time I can see the ghost image of previously shown page
I'm really interested in the acoustics/ speaker volume - how does this aspect compare to other current flagships & also specifically to ROG 2??
Thanks.

1. I do not see any reddish tint on gray colors in low brightness levels in low ambient lighting. I tested at 144Hz, 1-20% brightness, dark room, and with the Reddit is Fun app set to a dark gray background.
2. I looked up a 5% grain photo and found a video on YT. At the minimum brightness wherein the picture becomes visible to my eye in a dark room, there's uneven graininess. Raising the brightness a bit and I can see horizontal banding. No issues at higher brightnesses, though.
3. Similar result on the ROG Phone 3, sadly.

No, the ROG Phone 3 does not support motion estimation/motion compensation, or MEMC, as it's called on the OnePlus 8 Pro or OPPO Find X2 Pro. The OnePlus 8 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro can do hardware-accelerated MEMC thanks to a dedicated display processor called the Iris 5, designed by a company called Pixelworks. More details on that here: https://www.xda-developers.com/pixe...ssor-android-display-experience-oppo-find-x2/

It's actually not quite as loud as the ROG Phone II. Still gets very loud in comparison to most devices, though. I've mentioned all the audio features that ASUS and Dirac added to the ROG Phone 3 in my review. You can thankfully tweak the speaker quality a bit with the 7-band equalizer and Bass/Treble slider in AudioWizard.
So based on your information, Im deciding to keep my rog2 for another year and see what 2021 brings us.
Hopefully an LCD gaming device or a high quality oled one.
Thank you for your answer
Can you please show the air triggers and how you can use them if you have that on hand?
So little people touch on this feature or expand on how it's used and I'm very curious as the rog 2 I have has had beta gestures forever.

I posted extensively about the AirTriggers in my review. What more do you want to know?
1)is there FM radio
2) Is 3rd party application shown on always on display
Can the AirTrigger functions be mapped for usage in other non-game Apps/ functions (including torch/ camera/ audio player etc)?
If not possible in stock, will custom ROMs (if they happen for ROG 3) be able to re-map AirTrigger functions?

Yes, you can set AirTriggers to work in non-gaming apps. I just mapped the left/right shoulder buttons to previous/next in Google Play Music. One problem: the stock camera app can't be added to ArmouryCrate. Further, when I added GCam, the camera viewfinder was totally black when I launched it. I suspect that the camera is being blocked by the overlay in some way.
The sound system benefits (volume/ bass/ enhancements etc) are only during gaming, or throughout general usage of phone (calls/ music/ videos)?
Thanks for the awesome review

Already answered in post #6 towards the end.....
I have been a loyal Pixel customer until now. I love my Pixel 4 XL, which is working very well. However, I am blown away by the ROG 3 specs. I am especially attracted to the display and the audio in addition to the fast performance. I have three questions for you i
1) What was your experience like with the display. Will it blow the Pixel 4 XL out of the water?
2) What was your experience with the performance like in comparison to other phones?
3) Is Asus good about updates ( yearly system updates as well as security updates on a monthly basis)?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hello, I don't play games on mobile at all yet I'm considering buying this phone simply because of the huge battery and speaker setup as those are the most important for me.
Do you think I should go for it?

I got the ROG Phone 2 for that same reason, and I can tell you that you won't be disappointed. You can go for the ROG Phone 3 for with the same results. Only difference there is that there is no built in headphone jack. I came from the OP7 Pro, so the only thing you'll miss is the higher quality display.

Question Reading mode?

Hey everyone,
I am new at Xiaomi phones. Of course, I want it rooted etc therefore I am waiting until Thursday night (01.12) for it to be unlocked. After that I plan to install some custom ROM eventually xposed with modules.
I am testing the phone in a meantime and one thing made me make this thread.
I come from Huawei P40 and it's display is awesome. Eye comfort(reading mode at Xiaomi devices) really does its job and I enjoy having warm colours to its fullest. However I am a bit disappointed with Reading mode on Xiaomi. Slider is to the end of right edge but I find display "blueish".
Is there any way software wise to make display more warm(reddish)?
Thanks everyone in advance for your answers and advices.
I use the app Twilight to adjust the darkness level at night, you can lower the display brightness even more than the standard slider. You can also adjust the colour temperature to your liking.
