Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Xiaomi Mi A1's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Low light need Improvement
Low light is pretty week. Camera app is slow to capture and subjects need to be dead still to produce a usable picture
well overall device is great only weak spot is camera in low light outside in daylight camera performs great but in absence of light there is tons of noise it's like a 3 mp camera image don't know whether a software update can fix that and when mi will provide that or just camera sensor is not capable. i think xiaomi should have asked google to modify camera app also
In low light the cam is more or less unusable.
Yeah, we know the problem. It is not camera itself issue, it is camera app.
Low light performance is just Terrible, no escuses for that.
Low light camera performance is nowhere. Not even low light even in indoor location camera sucks.
Low light photography with the inbuilt Mi-ported camera app is terrible. Pictures clicked had a high amount of noise in manual mode and focusing too was bad. In the HDR mode and with flash, pictures had unrealistic tinge and destroyed the quality. The Portrait Mode works comparatively better however the light entering the photo lens somewhat decreased.
Overall, the app itself needs improvements. The hardware is more or lese fine.
Hardware camera is good for its price. I compared side to side with my old Samsung A710 (f/1.9 vs f/2.2), and the stock camera APP beats the samsung hands down. In low light, Xiaomi pics are darker but with more details. Samsung night mode makes brighter images, but more blurry and with more noise.
Then, if you root (systemless with magisk works great) and use the ported Google Camera then it's a completely different world... Pics become even brighter and more detailed. Different versions could give smoother images or more detailed but noisier ones, up to your choice.
We can't compare vs an Iphone or S8 camera ofc... but in its mid-tier range camera is great for everyday usage.
PS. Using Oreo build, never tried Nougat stock cam.
The Mi camera app considered good enough, though I admit the low light photos are terrible. What's more worst is that the HDR image is really bad compared to non-HDR in quality.
sideport with GCam HDR+ whichever version that suit you.. then have fun with it, if you're not satisfied with the result then it is time to use a DSLR with a 50mm 1.4 or the L series 1.2 for those low light moments..
For me, the build is just okay, I'm like holding my OnePlus 3T.

to me its not that bad , use google camera , lowlight photo seems better than stock camera
But the front camera is really bad whether it's gcam or stock. Most of the time it produces blurry images.

from my perspective and experience, the front camera with only a 5 MP resolution, using the GCam resulted in a much much better sharp and crisp image.. especially the portrait mode.. (compared to the stock camera app)
it goes back to HOW we take our photographs, steady hands and a moment (around 2-3 seconds while it process the picture) and I never took only one shot, I took many shots then pick which is the best, delete others..

During low light i can't have a good group selfie neither from stock nor from gcam. Most of the time it's blurry.

have you tried using the GCam with flash?
if you have, then there's nothing at the moment an option that I could recommend using
while using the GCam, let the auto focus (the circle thing) do it's work untill it dissapear.. then press the shutter :fingers-crossed:
I really don't understand. The camera module itself is pretty capable, but the software is putting it back. God I hope G Cam supports dual lens.
Is bad, is real bad

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I'll be honest, it's pretty bad, frequently off focus, poor low light, lack of stabilization, but maybe fine for the price range I guess
Redmi Note 5 is probably the better choice for photo quality
Nonetheless, I think updates might help. At least I hope

In daylight conditions pictures turns out good with good focus , saturation levels etc. But color reproduction needs work and in low light conditions noise is quite apparent. Portrait is like 7/10. Selfies turn out good after the recent update, 8.5/10.
P.S. For stabilized videos I use nokia camera app and its upto the mark .
Low-light picture quality is abominable. Zoom tears images, there is a lot of noise. Images in daylight are pretty decent. For this price range, the camera quality is justifiable (I suppose). I have a Moto G4 Plus and it takes amazing photos compared to this device. If you remove the portrait mode, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has nothing over the Moto G4 Plus camera.
Hope to see changes in future updates.
Yes, pretty disappointed with the camera performance. I should have got the RN5 instead but since I already got this, I'll stick with it as taking pictures is not the main thing for me on this phone. Still, the quality is far off from the various paid reviews.
Is it better with Google Camera , anyboby ? Thanks

For sure Gcam pics are better. I have been using it from past one week and will sure never turn back to stock camera.
Moreover with Gcam you also get additional features like panorama , ar stickers and google lense.
Can anyone show the photo quality difference with gcam and the stock one?

It's quite bad with the built-in camera app , but it's quite acceptable with some manual camera apps and especially in HDR mode
I am yet to purchase the phone. I have seen lot of camera comparison with Redmi note 5 pro on YouTube but still confused. I am planning to use Lineage os if I buy the device.
Can anyone please tell me how is the picture quality taken with gcam mod on 6gb ram model with Redmi note 5 pro?

Is photo quality better than redmi note 5 pro if I use google camera on zenfone max pro m1?
Don't know but it is definitely better than the original Asus camera app
Earlier the photos taken from Asus were not that great as that of redmi note 5pro, but now with Google cam installed these are now coming extra ordinary, thanks for the team made possible without rooting the phone.

I installed Google camera after enabling api through fastboot but not much big effect is seen from Snapdragon camera
For example I did portrait mode on Google camera but it takes much time than Snapdragon camera and also showing images of low resolution and small megapixel (my camera support 16 MP but it showed images from 8 MP and allow motion is not working and hdr+enhanced is allowed but not working, the camera got stuck every time it is turned on
Okay at well lit conditions, not good at low light
During daylight, the rear camera photos are good.
But the phone doesn't focus properly on close objects.
The low light camera is bad. A lot of noise, less light detection, slow focus, etc.
The video quality (1080p) during day is good. But the device takes time to focus during a video recording.

How does AI contribute to the photo in Honor 10?

I have never heard AI camera till I noticed a thread on XDA (https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-10/how-to/ai-camera-technology-makes-photo-t3784973#post76430132). Could anyone tell the difference of these two pictures and how does AI contribute to the photo?
This explains it, I think: https://www.xda-developers.com/honor-10-multi-scene-detection-filters-camera/
The AI camera on the View 10 and the Mate 10 recognised a single scene (from a list of 13 scenes) and optimised the picture for that scene. The AI 2.0 on the P20 series and the Honor 10 is capable of recognising multiple scenes, intelligently segmenting them and applying individual scene optimisations to the picture to all the recognised scenes.
it seem to add saturation, contrast and HDR everywhere, doesn't seem that exciting for people who like realistic photos/colors

But very exciting for social sharers
For those that have actually sampled the phone or are using it, have they seen a difference between pictures taken by the Honor 10 and then the Honor 9 or 10 View?
can't compare with other models but images of skin are overprocessed, skin is too smooth and at same time they try to make everything extremely sharp, so you end up missing lot of blurred details of skin, especially pubic hair on face it's blurry as hell
as for AI, I just switched it off, it's taking bad photos, if you take photos of landscape it just oversaturate all colors, especially grass/leaves/sky but even buildings, people in foreground are better. AI also deciding most of the time when detect person in viewfinder that you should use Bokeh/portrait mode and blur everything around, which is kinda stupid, though at least you can later decide to disable this AI and return back to original image
TLDR - too sharp (eyes and other parts), too much contract (hair/eyes making everything darker), too smooth/baby skin missing imperfections/details. as for AI oversaturated mess with only benefit brightening dark parts, not really worth being enabled if you ask me, need to experiment with HDR or Pro mode
These 2 videos make a comparison between AI, HDR and AUTO modes of the Honor 10. It compares it to a Xiaomi Redmi 5 plus and it blows it out of the water, expecially in low light.

low Light problems photos from stars distorted with S9Plus

Hello,
i take photos from the night sky since serveral years (with smartphones too).
Unfortunately with the Samsung S9plus the stars are not pinpoint like as they are on the Samsung S7. They apear very distorted with a kind of a halo.
Ofcourse the smartphone was not moved during 10 seconds of exposure time.
I did layed it down and used the self timer mode to prevent shaking.
I tried it serveral days in comparison with the Samung S7.
The S7 is always much better and show pinpoint like stars.
The distortion of the stars is visible in the RAW files(DNG) too so no jpeg problem forced by the compression.
Could you reproduce the same problems?
I am not allowed to post links. So how to show you the photo?
Could send you the link of the uploaded photos for comparison.
The dual camera variants of Samsung phones tend to overexpose shots, especially during darker environment.
That's what I noticed, and I'm waiting for the update they sent to Note 9s.

Are you using the telephoto camera? It has OIS driven by digital gyroscopes. Those gyroscopes aren't effective at low frequencies so the OIS will slowly drift around a small amount. 1/5 second is usually the limit for sharp photos. Even when the gyroscopes are turned off, OIS lenses are VERY sensitive to motion because of the lens being on a soft suspension. Walking next to the tripod could wobble the lens.
You also can't expect clear images if you use F/1.5.
Try using the wide angle lens.
I would send a photo to someone of you so you can post it here into the Tread.
Who like to do it?
The camera was layed down on the ground so no shaking or vibration ppossible during the exposure time.
I found no setting that the OIS gyroscope is working in photo mode. OIS is probably only working in video modes.
Even if it works in photo mode, the camera was layed down, so no shaking could happen.
Who of you could make a photo from the stars with the following settings?
Pro Mode
Camera mounted or layed on the ground with direction to the night sky.
Self timer to prevent shaking
Iso 800
10sec shutter speed
F 1.4

Antwort unfortunately the tele lens only works in very good light conditions.
Even in a bright lighted room there is no way to activate the real Tele lens. The camera automatic switch to digital Zoom.
Also in pro mode its not possible to use the telephoto lens if the light condirions are not perfect.
This is very bad because if the cameras is standing still completely and the object doesn't move why not using the Tele camera lens in pro mode?
Very interesting Thanks for the link

Pretty disappointing top be honest. I still need to take more shots but I am finding inconsistency in exposure.

Which gcam would you install? Or does it need to be modified for this phone?
G cam from 7T works on the 8pro except no telephoto camera crashes the app when enabled
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/GCam_7.2.010_Urnyx05-v2.3.apk
Photos have been a huge step up in quality from my 6t (not surprising). Does anyone know how to force the app to take in 48MP by default? There is no option that I can see to change that.

Been impressed with the camera so far. Telephoto is still hit and miss and haven't used wide angle loads but the main sensor is a big improvement over the 7 pro
I think the camera is amazing, especially super macro.
Had a little mooch around St James park for exercise during lockdown.
Yeah op did a good job this time.
Skates
I hope gcam comes when support for all the sensors
And don't forget the colour filter camera is actual an X-RAY cam!

There's already a gcam group on telegram, and it's producing good results
I have terrible lens flare effect, device is going back.. 1/4 of the pictures had it... At a price tag of 999 , this is not acceptable for me.. saw it on some youtuber reviews to (but they didnt mention it in one word). Guess exchanging the device will not help
Will keep my old device for a couple of months and wait for october , hehe
autofocus and main sensor is better then s20 ultra , I am owner of s20 ultra and oneplus 8 pro at the same time .
in worse light scenario oneplus win in most time , photos almost always are sharp
but in zoom S20 always wins

I see an issue where you have red blotches
I haven't experienced the sun flare.
I have taken many pictures outdoors while hiking in various conditions and I am mostly happy with the camera. HDR is good and i like the exposure and colors I get. I don't really take any zoomed in shots so i can't speak to that but I generally like the shots coming out of the wide angle and main sensor.
a couple notes:
- I still notice a different white balance between the main and wide angle camera. Nothing bad and I still like both results
- Nightscape photos I notice a red tint in places. Some of the youtube reviews have mentioned this as well.
Will be interesting to see what this camera could do after a few updates over the summer.
I see that something in the indoor photo the focus is very bad at the corner of the picture... Someone has the same problem?
