Hey guys how's it going? Just picked up a LG G2 on Verizon this week and its my first time using android since the Galaxy Nexus back on Ice Cream Sandwich. Android has come such a long way since its amazing. Just kind of thinking out loud here but I'm almost considering going back to iOS. By now I thought android would be much smoother than what I have seen running AOSP 4.3 and 4.4 ROMs, not necessarily lag and the phone stuttering but the frame rate of the phone and scrolling just doesn't match iOS which is really a bummer. Does anyone else feel this way? I feel like Android is such a beautiful OS, Google Now is absolutely amazing and android is way better looking and complex than iOS but there's still a couple things that I did like about it. The music app by Google on the phone is pretty laggy and is a little tough to navigate IMO. Does anyone recommend any music players that are better?
Does anyone else feel the frame drop I am experiencing though? Would love to get my hands on a Nexus 5 because I know they have the best optimization possible in most cases.
Also Verizon guys because I know buttons are kind of different, am I gonna get used to thesr buttons or will a case make it any better? They're driving me crazy especially when the phone is laying on a table and I have to pick the phone up to turn it off.

I have tried several AOSP roms on the G2 and I find the LG stock rom to be quicker, stable and better battery life etc... at this present time then AOSP. While the stable version was just released yesterday it still needs time to work out the kinks.

Yeah just curious as to what's going on because it still seems pretty choppy to me and I am even trying out the new runtime ART. Maybe I'll flash a stock ROM like Clean ROM. Honestly I played with a friends Moto X week or two ago on Verizon on 4.4 and was very impressed!

I encourage you to try Clean Rom. And download the trial version of PowerAmp. If you go back to iOS after to listening to this phone running poweramp on a stock based rom, it just wasn't meant to be. I came to this phone after an iphone and I'm telling you with a decent pair of headphones, this phone sounds amazing.
Buttons are a getting used to thing.
I keep turning the phone over to make sure I have it on the right one.

No knock off on AOSP
you need to realize that KitKat for LG G2 is in Alpha stage...which means it is not 100% more like 70%...ART isnt even working.

THIS! How would you compare your iPhone and your G2? Which one has the better sound with headphones? I mean, both set at the best settings you did on them. It is very important for me, as I can't decide between a G2, a Z1 and an iPhone 5S. I already own an iPhone 5. Had a lot of iPhones before though. I will even run the portable amp way witht them, I love my C&C BH and I love my ZO. :good:

I'm running CM11 Rom not posted on this site (it was but the thread was closed) theres a newer version floating around on that other site that is really good, and ART works just fine. I've been running it for a week with no problems at all.
I can't from iOS as well and the scrolling took me a little while to get used to. I don't notice it much now. I think it's just a difference in scrolling mechanics I think. That being said iOS bored me and in loving my g2

Anyway, this is a great rom. Really stable for this early on, been running it for over a week. Switched to the kernel posted in the non carrier G2 dev section a few days ago, running spectacularly considering how new it is. The only really bad problem I'm having is the kernel broke the camera. Not all the time, it works sometimes, but it craps out sometimes. It has the same problems as the other ASOP roms are having (low benchmarks, the stock camera app has only 8mp cam (13mp works in other cams,) sound quality suffers compared to stock, etc) but generally its fast, smooth, stable, and I love it. I can't go back from kitkat now. Give it a shot!

Still having a little trouble typing it seems...
But I came from iOS. I just couldn't stand it anymore, and needed a new change of pace. I feel like I've missed so much by not being on Android for so long.
Thanks the input, hopefully Cyanogenmod 11 picks up quickly for the G2. It runs pretty well Android has come such a long way the thing that drives me crazy the most about this is the way the scrolling works in Android, iOS has absolutely wonderful scrolling, elastic, and consistent. Flicks on Android are choppy in apps at times and not consistent on how it scrolls. SMS and iMessages sent a little quicker and more consistent as well but that's not a big deal. Miss iTunes a bit for music management too idk how to get my Recently Added playlist onto my device which I locally store all of the songs on it.
Also blows my mind but Google images when you scroll through is extremely laggy! Probably the most lag I've seen anywhere on the phone. You would think being their own website and me using Chrome that wouldn't happen haha.
That said Android is a beautiful OS, way more entertaining and options than iOS. Let's see if I can get used to it I have until January 15th I can get a full refund if I want to.
Not long ago, I was cleaning out my garage and checking out some old PCs, trying to clean up the harddrives before recycling.
The damn Windows Me was sure running "fast like hell". ... simple OS does run faster .. even on crappy HW.
(one thought crossed my mind ... how crazily-fast it would run on my current kick-ass HW ?)

I agree... However, I cannot cope with the limits of iOS, so I keep picking android phones.

I have been a heavy user of custom ROMs for more than three years now on all my Android devices. Lately, although I have a phone that not so long ago was still Samsung's flagship (the galaxy S4, I9505), the pictures I get with it really suck. A couple weeks ago, the phone could not detect my SIM card (pure hardware issue), so I re-installed the stock firmware and took it to the repair shop to get the warranty repair. They fixed it and I got my phone back. Just to make sure it was working fine, I decided to use the stock ROM for a while, and oh surprise: the camera takes much better pics in low light conditions or indoor than the same camera with any custom ROM app (usually AOSP-based, AOKP or CM-based). I tried to download the Google camera, and the low light pictures really suck. Then I tried a bunch of camera apps from the Play store, but I invariably got similar results to what I got with my custom ROMs.
That got me thinking. I'm no dev nor programmer, so I won't get technical, but it seems to me that there can be two reasons for the samsung app to work better:
- Either it has access to (proprietary) hardware drivers that other camera apps cannot access, and therefore it can get everything out of the camera hardware
- Or Samsung (which is not known to be great for its software) has developed a great camera software.
I would think it's something along the lines of the first reason. So does that mean I am either stuck with a ROM I cannot stand (Touchwiz is awful, has always been, and may always be) and a decent camera, or a decent ROM but a camera that is kind of useless when I'm indoor?
If so, how are the cameras on other similar phones (I'm thinking Nexus 5, Sony Xperia, etc.), running on custom ROMs compared to the stock camera apps? Is there also a noticeable difference, or is it just with Samsung?
I understood that you cannot run the Samsung camera apk on a custom ROM (even one on a Samsung phone), because the camera relies on some kind of Samsung proprietary framework.
Does this mean I should be looking for a phone that is running not only on open source software, but also open source hardware, does that even exist?
Anyone has noticed something similar? Am I the only one to be bothered by this?
I'll post here a couple pics taken in the same ambient light conditions. One with the Samsung camera (Auto setting), one with Google camera, and one with another camera app from the market (don't remember which one, but I tested about 15 of them and their results were quite similar).
Anyway, even if you don' have a solution to the problem but can point me to information that could help me understand how to choose my next phone, I would really appreciate. Thanks!

That is the example difference between things that are built for the device over using open-source options. Software will always be better from the OEM. You see the same thing with HTC and Sony devices. Take the m7 and m8. They have great cameras as long as you use HTC Sense. Other wise all you get is a basic 4 mpx camera that sucks. If you want one that works the same no matter the rom then get a nexus. This is something OEM are doing to make people want to use their software

A Nexus could be an option, but the screen size of the Nexus 5 was already too large for me (and so is my current phone, the Galaxy S4), so there's no way I'm getting a Nexus 6 (plus it's prohibitively expensive, at least here in Europe). When will Google make a Nexus mini or compact? That would rock, especially if they go the Sony way (not compromising too much on hardware features). The only downside of Nexus phone is their lack of MicroSD card slot, but that's off topic.
Anyway, what about the Google Edition phones? As I understand, they have the same hardware as their OEM counterpart (don't they?), but instead of running on proprietary stock ROMs, they ship with a pure Vanilla Android. Does this mean they ship with a camera that sucks, or is there some kind of tweak included to get the most of the camera with those editions, too? If so, would flashing that ROM help (if I can get my hands on it)? Unfortunately it seems the whole Google Edition concept has not gained a lot of traction (maybe because of the unavailability of the handsets in many places, maybe thanks to the OEM who did not play fair game and rather managed to get their crappy proprietary stock versions in the hands of customers), so I'm trying not to get too excited about this either.

The GPE device dont come with stock android completely. I have a GPE HTC M7 and the gpe software has some of the closed sourced drivers and such for things like Beats audio and the camera. As I run pure AOSP I wind up with a 4mpx camera that really sucks. While i agree alot of the newer devices have huge screens that make it almost pointless for me. The m7 is not bad at about 5in. But then again it doesnt have an SD card slot but comes with 32gb of storage which I think is plenty for my use. Part of me misses my old samsung devices but I made the mistake once of getting the one with the Samsungs chip and not the snapdragon which killed development.

Alright! Well, if I could find the GPE edition for my phone (I9505), then I would get all the camera features and none of the TouchWiz crap, which would already be quite an improvement over what I have now (complete TW stock). I guess another possibility would be to flash a stock based ROM that is rooted and from which I could remove all the bloatware...
OK, the hunt is on for a new ROM!

If you want all the features of the camera then yes I would run a stock de bloated rom. I used to run Samsung devices and you can remove most things which will give you the camera app which has all the best features.

So, if you've read the title, you'll know that I currently have a Honor 8 that I love, except for one thing. GOD. DAMN. EMUI. Build is great, camera is great, battery life is good, it's fast, snappy, etc... But I can't stand EMUI anymore. Late notifications, weird scrolling animations, rare security updates and, most of all, Honor has still not released the source code, which prevents devs from making a stable Custom ROM. LineageOS has been in the works for months and it works quite well, but it randomly reboots every now and then, and it won't be fixed until the source code has been released, which might be.. Never.
So, I've decided to sell it (it can still go for a decent price, I've had 305€ -$330- offers, but I have to wait to get a new phone since I don't have a backup) and go for a RN4, probably the best value for that price, that I ordered on AliExpress for about $150, shipping included.
I've seen that there are quite a lot of AOSP ROMs for the RN4 (Snap version), but are they stable enough for a daily driver ? Does the fingerprint scanner work? How is battery life? And, most of all, are you guys happy with it so far?
Since they are quite hard to get in France (people don't like to import from China), I can easily sell it for $200 if I don't like it, but I'd like your opinion on it

The AOSP roms are still sometimes buggy. And the camera quality is terrible. Get the oneplus 3 or 3t. The only reason id recommend a RN4 snapdragon is battery life. Trust me, the camera is terrible compared to the honor 8.

I read somewhere that huawei is changing the look and feel of emui with nougat update
May be you should first wait for update, will save you some bucks

I've been on Nougat for a while now (since it was released a few months ago), the look of the launcher is a bit more stock, but the behavior of some stuff is still, well... Not great. For example some notifications show up late, if at all, lockscreen notifications are limited to one line, they don't show up on the lockscreen at all if you have a theme installed...
I use a stock Android looking theme, but yeah, I'm not a fan of the interface, it's driving me crazy.
On the other hand, I've using MIUI for a while now. I had it back when it was first released on the first Galaxy S back in 2011, then on my Nexus 4, then on my Mi3... Plus, now that there are stock ROMS available..

I'm currently using Mi A1 but thinking about upgrading to Nokia 7.1. I really exited about this phone and like everything about it on paper.
However in a lot of reviews people are complaining about regular lags while scrolling through UI, opening Google Now, notification drawer etc. Many also complaining that apps take long to load and that they even crash sometimes.
Can some of you, real device users please confirm or deny, whether you experience some or all of these things? And how you satisfied with user experience on this device overall?

I too upgraded from a Mi A1 to this. It has no problems connecting to LTE and staying connected unlike the A1. I replaced the default launcher with Nova Launcher and I'd say it's not super noticeable but I'd say it's faster overall. There's an OTA out that pushes the October security patch and likely some software improvements. With Pie likely coming before the end of the month, I'm satisfied. If you get it, buy a case too - believe me. It's thinner width wise and slippery.

Pictures tend to be slightly better on the Nokia 7.1 but camera quality varies by person. One person could see a stunning photo and another says it's subpar. I would love a port of the Pixel 3 camera here.
Smooth experience here, but I'm not the sensitive type that bugs out over 2 vs 4 seconds to open an app.
Camera is way ahead of the Essential.
Great device overall.

There's plenty of pixel 3xl gcam
ports, check out the 7 plus thread. Picture quality is amazing with the port..
I would go for MI 8, without any doubt, and here are my reasons:
1. Did I mention the price? I paid $350 shipped for a gorgeous blue MI 8 with Snapdragon 845 + 6 GB RAM + 6.21" gorgeous AMOLED display. Bootloader was unlocked and all I had to do was flash TWRP + EU ROM and I am in the game!
2. Pie updates come weekly and they get better and better. It's very fluid, smooth, and performance is awesome.
3. Stock camera has improved a lot but BSG modded GCAM is excellent and is specially made for MI 8. The iSheeple X (you know what I am talking about?) phone users are amazed at the quality of the photos and couple of times they insisted that I take pictures in parties... That speaks volumes!
4. DualGPS is good with L5 satellites to boot.
5. Froze several MIUI apps (MI Browser, Account, Phone, Mail, Messaging, Sync, etc. and replaced it with Google couterparts) and checkout the battery consumption overnight. Incredible!
6. Alternative ROMS like Havoc (I particularly love this as it has tons of features/customizaton), Pixel, etc. are available and they can be a daily driver too.
7. Use Nova Launcher with Prime. With gestures and all the Nova Prime customization (sky is the limit), the navigation is a delight!
8. I used to hate the notch with passion and for some unknown reason, got used to it now. I am not really sure why bit it doesn't bother me any more. That's what happens when you keep staring at something, day in/out. Go figure!
9. Did I mention the price? I just cannot believe Xiaomi can sell the device with the same specs as a S9 for less than half the price. That only shows how much these branded manufactures are robbing the customers! This is what I call as a daylight robbery!
I own it for more than 3 months now and would buy it again without hesitation.
PS: Sure, there are few minor bugs on the beta PIE ROM which are not a show stopper for me.
I may sound like a Xiaomi salesman but am definitely not I used to love Nexus line for its features and price and now Google follows Sammy. Now, Xiaomi comes to the rescue!
For the last 6 months - No, I really didn't, it has been a constant disapointment and frustration..... until last Friday that is.
The latest ROM from Xiaomi.eu solved the last piece of the puzzle for me (google hotword detection) so now my car stereo running android auto finally works properly again!
With GCam for it's night mode, it is all-round great now.
Surely you should have had the update for the stock camera to have the new night mode? How's that?

i was on Samsung galaxy s4, bought for 480$, i disappointed with it's features and performance and high price,also got stuck with locked bootloader.
for me i will not go for Samsung anymore.
i was searching a lot to get a nice phone with high performance and reasonable price, also availability in my country.
until i found xiaomi mi8, impressive phone and a lot of features, i feel the real freedom.
but one thing made me sad is the big battery drain in the miui 10. miui 9 was great!
so i will flash havoc os to et rid of the battery drain problem
I love my Mi8 too. Currently updated to 10.1.1.0
Just need a tweak for audio, because I bought Kz ZSN IEM and tested/compare my old 2015 samsung A8's audio output to Mi8 and notice that samsung A8 audio quality is far more good and loud than our Mi8..
Waiting to unlock my Mi8, and will flash dolby atmos.
Try to test it too and see for yourself, and if you have other suggestion on how to improved our mi8 audio pls feel free to comment. Thank you
