Help!
My first topic here ever.
My J5 (2016) fell dramatically today, and the screen is black now. I need, need, need to save all the photos, videos and memory notes related to my kids. But when I connect the J5 to the computer - the computer does recognize it, but when I open the J5 folder - it's absolutely empty. USB debugging is off Also, I have a pin code when turning on the phone plus I need to draw a special sign to log in when it's in the stand-by mode....
What to do, please?
If your screen is black due to crack on the display, then there is no software problem I think. So don't worry, all of your data will be saved in your device, until you manually delete data or reset your device.
There is no way to enable USB Debugging without going to the device's Setting. So, there is no other way except replacing the Touch & Display panel with a new one.
***If something or some portions are visible on the screen, then try to access the Setting>Developer's Option>USB Debugging & enable it. If the Touch Digitiser is not working, then you can use a USB mouse instead of the Digitiser.
And if your screen is completely black, then it's impossible to do without changing the panel.
I am not sure if it's only the screen. But when I put the J5 on and off, it is vibrating, so I guess that the software is at least partly ok...
Do you have an SD Card in the phone? If you do, you could be able to recover some of the media that you saved, depending on if you stored it on the SD Card. You'll need a microSD Card Adapter if you want to connect it to your PC, though.
Since your phone has a PIN lock, you won't be able to connect it via USB to your PC, unless you can unlock it. You'll need a replacement screen to be able to use your phone again. They usually cost around £30-40 from my experience.

I think that's because they are buying the parts as well as replacing the screen so they might charge extra. Ask them if you could bring in your own replacement LCD or get them to buy one from eBay for use on replacing your screen.
DIY is much cheaper but requires a lot more handwork. If you search on eBay, 'SM-J510FN - Replacement LCD', it should come up with some replacement LCDs. You can search YouTube for a tutorial on how to replace it.
use OTG cable and a keyboard to navigate TO usb debugging and enable it. but you'll need a reference to navigate.

Hi,
i have a NT , when i plug in the cable to my pc it shows he usual USB mode.
is there anyway to have it in usb mode but be able to use the tablet at the same time ? in other words get rid of the damn pop up and let me use it while its in usb and charging mode ?
thanks
you could try disabling automount... maybe the USB window is triggered when the SD is mounted for computer use.
That is absolutely correct. If you don't know where to find automount, it is accessible through the nt hidden settings app.
ive also been seeing a weird issue , ive done that in the past , but when my tablet is connected to power / computer usb cable to any power source my touch screen is funky , when im on the lock screen i can do stuff , i can pull the bar over to almost get it to unlock but when and if it does its funky , i just kicked it out off of auto mount and i have what i want except touch screen is not actually working , if i unplug it from the cable the screen works ,
any ideas ?
You could also try "ejecting" the device. That might put it in charge state and allow you to continue using the device.

I haven't noticed the "funky" screen on my NT, but have experienced it on smartphones in the past and it was associated with a noisy charger. Try using different chargers and see if the problem gets better or worse.
ah yes you have a valid point i have two NT's one for me and one for my gf hers blew a charger and we had to have B&N replace the usb port receptacle already , had it less than three weeks. I will try it with her usb cable and see what i get as they changed the whole assembly and if it does not occur with her new cable i will get them to exchange it before the 1st ..
Is there any way to manage the USB connection when the phone is *not* plugged in? I want to be able to set whether the connection will share the int/ext SD card or be in charge only mode.
For what it's worth, I'm running CM7 Weekly 4, and LauncherPro (which I can set an icon for many system activities, but have no idea which would be the correct one).
Does anyone know how this can be done?
When you plug into an AC outlet it automatically goes to charge only, when you plug into USB it prompts by default Portal/tools..Mass storage..Charge only, you can set there.

The question is, how can I set the mode when the phone isn't plugged into anything?

Since it's not plugged into anything, there's no connection to manage. Just set the type of usb connection you want before unplugging it, then it should stay that way.

That's not the point. Okay, let me explain. When I use the phone at home, I always let it share the drives. But if I'm out and need to charge the phone, but I don't trust the machine - then I don't want the drives shared, even for a moment.
However, unless I can change this without making the connection first, then either I can't charge my phone this way, or I'm risking malware getting a hold.
Since the phone remembers the last setting, it must be stored somewhere. The question is how can this stored setting be changed to prevent an issue like this from occurring.
Software = unknown, hardware = easy
If you don't mind carrying a "charge only" cable with you then you can avoid the whole issue of Malware, data dumps, etc. from a unknown PC that you just want to pull some juice from. I'm not sure if these cables are sold anywhere, but mod'ing a normal USB to micro-USB cable to make it data free is pretty simple.
On a USB connection your power (+5VDC and GND) is carried by the two outer most pins on the connector while the two inner pins carry the signal (. The I would mod the USB connector as it's bigger and much easier to work with.
Using a Dremel tool grind down the two middle connectors on the end that plugs into the PC. Make sure to remove all the copper for these two connectors, but do not hit the other two or you may damage the circuit path. Even though you are dealing with low voltage and small current levels, damage to the power connectors could cause issues.
Here is one issue though that is not limited to just this method, but to any time you charge from a PC: Per the USB 2.0 standard a PC must be able to provide a total of 500mA total for all USB connections. The USB charging standard for phones says at least 500mA. In other words, if there is anything else connected via USB or the PC manufacturer fudged the spec than the phone will see it as in invalid charging device and charge really slowly.
If you decide to try this, let me know how it turns out. I have only run this in a lab setting and have no real world data on how it holds up. Good luck.

Just drag down the status bar and choose the USB Connection option to manage it and select "None." Dratsablive was right - put it in "None" mode when you disconnect at home and it will default to that when you connect again.
Nothing is going to jump onto your phone in the couple of seconds it takes to do this. Also, any windows malware on the PC will really NOT bother an Android phone.
Hi,
My brother dropped his Archos Diamond in a bath...
The screen doesn't work but when I power on the phone, it vibrates.
I'm not sure it's the screen so I don't want to buy a 50$ screen for nothing
Because maybe it's the screen connector, or another component before that.
I entierly disassembled the phone, but nothing looks bad.
It seems I can't use Android Control to see the phone screen on PC
Because he didn't enabled USB debugging, except if I can flash it with a rom that has it enabled but I don't know where to find that.
Is it possible to connect a screen not made for this phone if it has the same connector ? Are LCD connectors standard ?
Any ideas ?
Hi all,
Long story short, I went on a brief (1 week long) trip and just went back, and during the trip I had my HDX7 stored in a locker in powered off state. The weather during the week was rainy, but the storage locker was quite deep inside the room.
Before I go on the trip it works alright; however, when I'm back, I surprisingly found that it no longer connects to the PC, i.e. no USB debugging or MTP notification at all when I plug the tablet in.
Here's where I'm at:
No ADB and MTP recognition, either in OS or in TWRP recovery
Tablet charges normally at full speed
Different cables on hand doesn't help
Different ports on the PC, even a different PC, doesn't help
At this point I'm ready to accept that some sort of hardware damage has occurred, however, I'm still willing to know...
Is this really hardware damage, or have I missed something?
If yes, how come?
Possibility of repairing?
Thanks for your insights.

Charging takes place on the two outer pins; data communication on the two inner pins. Look for a bent/missing inner pin. More likely one or more solder connections have broken where the USB recepticle attaches to the main board. Not a fun fix; just say 'no' if inexperienced with such mods.

While I have tools for disassembly and some experience, HDX7 is definitely beyond my ability to dismantle just to check what's wrong, let alone repairing it on my own.
Guess I'll just sell this thing cheaply to someone who can bear with transferring files wirelessly...
Greetings everyone, recently my OPPO A72 fell in some Water and even though the phone still practically works, sometimes i struggle to see whats going on in the screen because of the water damage, and worst of all is, i cannot use the touch screen, making it impossible for me to backup my data before getting the screen replaced, even though USB Debugging IS enabled. I've heard that i could use ADB to backup my data or control my phone through my computer, but i get an error message on the CMD window, similar to : Device unauthorized whenever i try to activate ADB . Are there any workarounds you could recommend me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: Connecting the mouse to my phone using an OTG adapter also doesn't seem to work, as them mouse simply refused to power on (maybe because im connecting it through a tiny "micro-USB to micro USB-C adapter?)
