Install a volume booster which lets you increase the overall volume. Just be careful not to go overboard as you can destroy your speakers.

What volume? The earpiece volume is a tad low, but the phone speakers are about as loud as they come. Pixel 3 10/10, Note 9 9.5/10, Mate 20 Pro 9/10.

the general sound In my opinion it is low especially in the Bluetooth output. in the other models when you turn up the volume at most you can visualize the warning that can damage your health but allows you to raise further. on the mate 20 pro there is no such possibility
I find those apps useless . The best and only way is to change the build prop. Let's hope for root one-day
This one is working fine on my LYA-L29 since months.

@paolosnz Keep in mind that unlike other phones, the Mate 20 pro has separate controls for BT : one on device and the phone one. They are not synced as they are on my old Samsung or iPad. Maybe that is also part of the problem...but even with both controls at maximum I don't get the same level as on other phones. Loud enough for normal listening, but not deafening.
Im coming from P20 pro to Note 9 and now on Mate 20 Pro and i think that Mate 20 Pro has the worse quality sound and lower sound from my latest phones...
Another issue that hasn't been mention is the sound of notifications that for several apps like Facebook messanger, Viber the notification sound pays much more lower from what it really is...For an example if i set a generic notification sound and select that sound for Facebook & Facebook messanger then it plays for Facebook at level 10 & for Facebook messanger at level 4 the same ringtone (mp3)
Has anyone experienced the same situation?
Yeah mate 20 pro has really low sound. I have my pixel 2 xl here and I tried to play the same youtube video on both at the same time, and with the mate 20p on full volume I have to go down to maybe 60% volume on the pixel 2 xl to match it.
The volume in the earpiece is way to low...I have trouble understanding people when I make phone calls in noisy environments. In fact its is so bad that it makes this phone unusable while at work - I work at the airport on the ramp. Looking for a solution...
solution is to gather feedback before you make a bad purchase like this , lesson learned?

I did read a lot before buying this phone... and in the mean time my issue has been solved.
And just to be very clear, I don't need a comment like "lesson learned" that does not help at all. You got the message?

My wife's mate 20 pro have similar low volume issue with her bluetooth headset and I did this to resolve the issue.
You are going to need to change the Bluethooth audio codec in the "developer options"
I can't link because I am a new user but if you search for it on the internet you should be able to find information on how to do that
I believe you'll need your bluetooth headset connected before you can make any changes otherwise the option to change will be greyed out.
Basically I changed the Bluetooth Audio codec from ACC (which seems to be the default) to SBC. After this, the max volume dramatically improved.
For some reason, options like
Bluetooth Audio Sample Range, Bluetooth Audio Bits Per sample, Bluetooth Audio Channel Mode, Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec are greyed out even when the bluetooth headset is connected while I checked on another android phone that these are options you can actually play with.
I wanted to change these to see if it'll actually improve bluetooth audio. Either way, I'm happy that changing this works. Let me know if it help for you guys as well?

I've tried this app to increase earpiece sound but no luck. I had to remove the earpiece cover than sound is so loud now. I think this not software problem but earpiece cover.
The overall volume of the phone is surprisingly weak, all the more so when you have it plugged in...
You guys that are dismantling ****, I don't need to tell you that you are likely killing the submersible ability of the phone - right?

OMG dude, just update already and see if that fixes it. You do understand that it's impossible for us to tell what's wrong with it unless we stand right next to you.
It will be low due to water proof purpose.
Yes, there's a membrane on the speaker so water doesn't get in. That alone decreases the volume a bit. Top it of with a little water too, and it'll get even quieter. It's just the way it is.

Whats the actual speaker sound quality like, not the volume but the quality?
I can only give you a reference in HTC Sensation, which I just recently retired after getting the Z ultra.
For sound quality and volume, both are a big improvement for me. So depending n how you look at it - How good ZU is, or how bad Sensation was...

i dont have an issue with the volume, but i do hear a slight buzzing noise in the background. a little annoying
After coming from the Samsung Note 2, I think it's the worst audio I've heard on a smart phone. Especially for a phone that is advertised heavily as an entertainment device.. But I can live with it. I do wish it was louder tho.

this is very interesting. I turned the volume all the way down during a call and I could still hear a beeping noise.
even when there is dead air and no one is speaking from the other end, i hear a beeping noise.
its almost like the phone is emitting some noise during a call.
this is how my xperia z ultra (C6833, 4.4.2, 14.3.a.0.757) plays notifications
http://i.imgur.com/iD4VkhE.png
this is supposed to be a 2 second long 1KHz tone at -3 dB, almost maximum volume. A simple signal so one can see it clearly.
there is a gap near the start and a very very loud pop before it starts. The pop is off the scale, much louder than what the device supposedly allows any sound to be.
any ideas?
Does this happen with all the notification sounds? If so, it's a really weird issue.
Sent from my C6833 using Tapatalk
all i have tried so far exhibit this behaviour.
going into diagnostics and doing the earphone and speakerphone test in succession stops the problem
but after half a minute it starts doing it again.

I've had the same thing on some stock ROMs (I don't recall which). There's no such issue on Paranoid Android.

This happens to me too. ...very annoying.
Don't really know what to do about that.
Perhaps someone could write a script that whenever media server starts like with notification or ringtone, it starts in low volume and max out very quickly or to the volume level that the user has set so that it doesn't become that "ascending ringtone" function.
And if media server is already active. Like if you are playing a game or music there would be some environment function that the script does not trigger it self because when media is played and a notification comes on it only lower the volume of that stream so the problem does not involve these scenarios. And when the notification ends the volume of the music is reset to its original volume.
So the problem from what I have experienced is that the cracking sound comes only when media server is inactive and starts up.
This idea would work similar to the "ascending ringtone"function. But this applies to all notification streams and not only ringtones.
This is one solution I can come up with. But I don't know how to implement this in a rom.
This might eliminate this pop-cracking sound right before the sound of an notification or ringtone plays
One suggestion is perhaps to make this to a module that installs and activates with Xposed framework?
edit: Oh forgot to mention. Im on slimkat rom with pimped kernel. But it does the same with any other kernel or rom
don't want to ruin it for you but the pop *will* happen, no matter if the volume starts low or high.
i measured it with the volume at the minimum (but not zero) volume. the pop is still there, still louderthan the max volume.
i wonder if we can bring charges against sony for this. we've set the volume to a certain level and the phone not only ignores it but it also produces a sound louder than what is normally possible on the device. *much* louder, not just "quite louder". we're talking four times louder.
Bring charges...

Hey guys. This is the first device I've owned since the Galaxy Note 2, which was a great device in my opinion. I just got the z2 after extensive searching for a new phone. I couldn't decide between the m8 the z2 and the lumia 930. As photography was important for me I decided on this phone.
Anyways, I just got my phone today and I immediately noticed some oddities and I'd like to know if they're normal or if I should just return it for another. This is batch 14w28, so that means it was made in July.
The first is the volume for notifications... I can't hear them if I'm not paying attention to my phone! The volume is really low. I went into the options and raised the volume all the way up and still the same thing even though it's better. Very low
Build quality is good, but with the volume at max and using speakerphone or music or anything, I can feel the inside of the phone resonate or the sound moving around in there. Very awkward to be honest.
Phone quality. I hear a tinny sound in the background when someone speaks through the ear piece... Is this normal?
I love this device! It's gorgeous and runs very quickly! I'm very happy to get rid of Samsung for a while. Their devices were too cartoony, and I've had a lot of Samsung decides!
Well, please let me know. Thank you very much. Kind regards.
I've searched around and found these issues separately... But all together, is this normal?

Regarding Low notification volume: I believe only one speaker is utilized for notifications on stock ROM. There are mods available to both boost the volume as well as activate both speakers for notifications. Very simple too, just look on the first page of the Android Development section, or click here.
Regarding resonating and tinny sound: I do not experience this at all. My phone actually sounds quite nice playing back music through the speakers. I think you might want to have that looked at, but first try this: Go to Settings > Sound > Sound effects > Enable ClearAudio+

Well, I had a second one... It squeaked next to the sony logo ... I felt like I was going to crush it every time I was on the phone.
Third one came, thought it was perfect. I hold it to make calls, all is fine. I let go to make calls and hold it with my head and shoulder while I type out a message or wash my hands or whatever... "Kent... KENT!? Hello!? Are you there?" it apparently makes a noise like it's hanging up or static...
I don't know if I'm going to ask for a 4th phone. Sony has some serious problems. 2 of these 3 phones were W19, the other W29 (or 28, I don't remember). Amazon said to wait until they're out of stock to get devices from a different batch... Arg...
My wife got her 5x before I got mine. One of the things I noticed right away is that when video calling via Google Hangouts, the audio had a lot of echo and distortion. Now that I have a 5x as well, it sounds downright awful when two 5x phones are in the same Google hangout.
The funny thing is that overall audio quality is pretty good. Even videos taken with the device sound great.
Has anybody else tried Google Hangouts and experienced something similar? I am just trying to troubleshoot what might be wrong here. Using two Galaxy SIII's over the same connection, the audio was great sounding. So it seems to point to the phone. Anybody else have similar issues or suggestions?

This is pretty annoying. The mic is right next to the speaker on the bottom correct? Basically not usable without messing with it. I need to mess with it some more. Is the call volume the mic sensitivity or volume? It has a mic icon.
Just tried from 5x to ipod and it was better. Before I have only tried 5x to 5x. Strange it seems better when video is off and just audio call.

Hangouts uses audio codec Opus which is known as a modern low latency and high quality codec, which demands some CPU power, sometimes more than modest phones can sustain. Besides Hangouts video is one of the most bandwidth consuming - it takes 15M/min.
Google is probably the only one using exclusively its own servers for voice transmission, all others use peer-to-peer network. Fortunately Hangouts is right now into the process of switching to peer-to-peer network and it is a promising maneuver toward improvement of voice transmission.
Try to cancel video transmission and adjust microphone gain. When peer-to-peer transmission is in function, the voice improvement should be significant.
My Nexus from 2011 has no issues, so I doubt it is CPU related. I did get a message about it switching to peer-to-peer too. I have adjusted every volume and it just really doesn't work well. The issue is feedback and I don't think the transmission protocol or CPU has anything to do with that. Thanks for the info though.
Well I found a workaround. If you change the speaker used during the video call it will work. One person has to use the headset speaker. If both are using speaker it is horrible. It works fine, but the volume is way lower so not the best solution.

This is NOT acoustic feedback. It happens even when both parties are using earbuds. If the other party is using a 5X, you hear the echo. If you are using a 5X, the other party hears the echo. For some reason the 5X sends received audio back to the sender. I have no idea why. It's very frustrating to not be able to use the exact app I switched back to android for.
same here. tried several phones (iphone 5s, nexus 4, htc one) and tables (nexus 7, etc). got no problems with all other devices, just when the 5x is in the loop others will hear an echo
Same here, this is so annoying, I can't make a call or video call with the speaker ON (skype, line, whatsapp) or the others hear themselves too loud.
I can use a headset but that's not convenient!
This wasn't mentioned in any of the review, Call or video call is one of the main reason why we buy a phone!
Is there anyone who doesn't have this problem.

Guys I made some videos with ambient/landscape sounds in the background, and the actual recorded audio came out quite bad at random sections.
it seems that at 20-30% recorded volume there are random jumps/stutters in the level, which is extremely annoying and completely ruins the high quality audio
for those who know it sounds like some badly set noise gate or compression artifact
even though it happens with lossless audio also.
here are some examples!
these are compiled but were SAME listening to it on the phone.

what do you mean by noise reduction?

of course that was turned off
tried a headset mic today, that was ok, you can switch back and forth even during recording.
but its only mono and kinda defies the purpose - i bought the phone cos it supposed to have great onboard audio.
yes, this really sounds like a hard, choppy noise gate or low volume sensitivity switching...?
you suggest there are some setting for it hidden in the menus?
ps: i get it around ambient sound levels (1-2 green dots on the VU or lower)
Hmm, it is possible that your phone is faulty. Last question, do you have a case that can somehow block microphones? Or... maybe reboot

My don't have this issue, that musb be a damage in microphones.
What about a stereo when issue present?

it was stereo sound all the way, i didnt even tried it in mono.
ahh i get it. no, it wasnt like one of the microphones was cutting out.
you can hear it for yourself with headphones.
but the main problem is i had some more videos on my Gdrive, that i made with another v30 in a shop a few weeks ago. I double checked and it had the same audio issue.
so its a regular fault or some issue with the software for my area...
either way, i lost trust with the phone and returned it.
also i made an A/B comparsion with a S8+ and the video quality is just way better in any sense.
I reverse my statement, I have recorded a lot of video recently, and I confirm the same, the audio gateway is ruining a quiet sound, I have a nougat 7.1.2 11m, oreo in my opinion lowering photo quality, drain batery when phone is used convert to some heat (nougat gives a cooler phone), and less bass in music player.
What wersion system you have?
How to force LG to fix this? Because it is not the problem of the exempad.
PS. Additionally, for oreo, playing a full-length movie in h264 / h263 at 24fps gives me the impression of losing my film frame at the horizontal frame movement, I confirmed it on other v30s from oreo, on the nougat there is a liquid movie 24 fps.
Several people confirmed this fault and it's on all phones.
I confirmed it on two v30s myself.
But dude it's very hard to understand you with the Google translate.
Force LG??? ?
lol.
No way to force them to anything.
Customer service is for bouncing off ppl it's all bull**** ?
Actually it's them who forced YOU to buy the phone.
BTW it's a good phone for the price.
But I had the opportunity and swapped for s9
So I'm ejecting from this thread
Bye bye ?
