So I have a Kindle Fire pre-ordered, but I have been reading around and now I am not sure what to do because I am considering canceling my Fire and getting a touchpad off eBay.
Which one do people around here think is the better value, when one is planning on running custom android roms.

The Fire may not be very rom-friendly, but it's not even out yet for the developers to get ahold of. Cm7 is already well on its way for the Touchpad though. If that's your main criteria, I might suggest a Nook Color even. You can find them for $150 for a good refurb and it's well-supported by Cm7. They are similar hardware wise the Kindle Fire and the same form factor (7" screen).
buy me a fire and I'll let you know.
thanks
Well, just a quick at the specs here are a few that stand out:
TouchPad
Processor: Qualcomm dual-core 1.2GHz
Storage memory: 16GB or 32GB
RAM: 1 GB
Screen: 9.7 In.
OS: WebOS/Android 2.3 dual boot
Bluetooth: Yes
Front facing Camera: yes
Accelerometer: Yes
Compass (magnetometer): Yes
Gyroscope: Yes
Kindle Fire
Processor: TI OMAP dual core 1.0GHz
Storage memory: 8GB
RAM: 512 MB
Screen: 7 in.
OS: Android 2.3
Bluetooth: No
Front facing Camera: No
Accelerometer: No
Compass (magnetometer): No
Gyroscope: No
Not sure if one processor has a real advantage over the other but I would guess the TouchPad would probably be the better of the two.
Storage and RAM the TouchPad has the clear advantage.
Screen of course the TouchPad is bigger but it depends on what you prefer.
The Touchpad has an alpha version of Gingerbread 2.3 and of course WebOS witch I like much more than I expected. You could have two operating systems in essence.
The TouchPad was designed as a more Premium device with decent hardware (thus the greater storage and RAM) the Fire was designed as a budget device with cost saving in mind.
With all that in mind I go with the Touchpad if you can keep the price at around two $200 range (give or take a little).
That my 2 cents worth.
Tp is much better hardware
On the TP you also get bluetooth and a camera.
Don't know if Touchpad's GPU really better or worse than SGX540 of Nook, but 1gb of RAM really makes huge difference, 512mb is simply not enough, esp., for tablet.
However, Touchpad is big and heavy, and the pixel density is lower. And it doesn't have a proper build of Android (alpha 2 is alpha 2, more or less stable, but jerky) yet.

With Ice Cream Sandwich on the way. It is almost a given, that it will ported by early next year if not sooner. This should be a huge reason to go to Craigs List and buy that TouchPad!
Buy the touchpad especially if you get a 32gb version at good price. Android, even though alpha version, is working great. Should be a stable version out soon. ICS is also coming. The touchpad is a high end tablet!

Good catch, I'll add that to my list along with:
Accelerometer
Compass (magnetometer)
Gyroscope
Not to mention that the Fire might be locked down.
I looked at the Kindle Fire and Nook, they seem pretty good(and the Nook community is fantastic apparently and I'm assuming the Kindle will be too). Are there any other nice Android tablets under 200$? With at least 1Ghz processor and 512MB of RAM...
Good day everyone,
I'm stuck in a predicament and looking for some assistance into taking a decision.
- I want to buy my wife a 7" Tablet, she will use it for reading on the train and such but also internet browsing at home and media use.
- screen has to be good, now my issue is that there's so many out there and I have a limited budget, max 300$.
- With so many tablets out it's getting harder and harder to chose, (A100, A1, B&T Tablet, Kindle Fire, Galaxy Tab 7+
now I've been reading a lot about them and they're all good choices, but there's a always a little something that keeps me from choosing a clear winner.
Also to note I'm looking for a tablet that can offer the full android experience (market, launchers), I've included Kindle fire and Nook Tablet because I'm looking at the possibility of flashing roms on them unlock their full potential.
Preferred Specs:
RAM: 1GB RAM
Storage: At least 16GB otherwise uSD slot
Processor: Dual-Core
OS: Eventually support ICS with HA, the thing about HA is that apparently Nook Tablet might not support it because the kernel ver. is too low and doesn't support HA. I don't know if that's a software issue or hardware limitation.
The only one that doesn't fit the profile is the Galaxy Tab as it's 400$, otherwise i'd be the number 1 choice hands down, this thread wouldn't exist if that was the case.
A100: Issues are mainly battery life, not much Dev, support. (Official ICS dunno about HA)
Kindle Fire: 8GB storage, no expansion, ROMS TBD
Nook Tablet: Locked Bootloader, ROMS TBD (Older Kernel, no HA for ICS TBD)
Lenovo A1: Low RAM, Old processor (thinking ICS w/ HA)
Any1 can shed some additional info that can help assist me into finally picking the right tab.
Thank you in advance
Rodi

Moving to Q&A
bump for new section
I always narrow down to low priced tablets, which leave you with the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. The Kindle Fire is, for some bloody reason, powered by Froyo so I kill that and suggest the Nook Tab.
I'd suggest to take the Vizio Vtab1008 into account, it has only a single core CPU 1ghz 512mb ram and is 8'' but its a very nice device with a good display and it costs ~200$ only
And it sports a nice it blaster to use it as a nice universal remote for home entertainment...
Hi please tell me which one should I purchase between Paladin and Advanced ? Which one is better Thanks in advance ,
the paladin has only 2 point touch screen and 1ghz cpu while the advance has 5 point screen and 1.2ghz cpu (saw some rumors its 1.5ghz)

I am trying to figure out which is better, the Ainol Paladin or the Ramos W6HD: http://www.prlog.org/11758455-ainol-novo-7-paladin-vs-ramos-w6hd-android-40-tablet-fight.html
I'd go for the Paladin even though it does not have dual cameras or remote control. I found this comparison review here; http://www.prlog.org/11759554-ainol...o7-paladin-android-40-review-differences.html
Also, similar thread on the difference here: http://www.apad.tv/apadforum/showth...d-3.2-vs-Novo7-Paladin-4.0-Differences-Review
Good luck
Ainol Novo 7 Advanced would be better choice for you, is this Android 4.0 OS??
no, the advanced is only android 3.2. Only the Novo7 Paladin has Android 4.0: http://chinagrabber.com/search.aspx?find=ainol
now Ainol produce a new/same Novo7 advanced with ICS, i am buy this in germany store as pre order. The Store say, Ainol begin produce in the first week of 2012. I think i become this in the first week of february.

No it is not. I own the Basic and the Advance.
The Advance comes with 2.3.4 (rom ver 2.0t) with a possibility to install ICS as a beta rom that is pretty much striped from customization and has not support for the GPU so the ui and other graphics are pretty buggy
According to Ainol there will be a ICS release for the advance in Q1 of 2012.
As for the Basic, dont take the 99$ paladin, also aka "Knight" ! go for the Basic ver.
It will cost 15-20$ more but you will get a better screen ! the Paladin has capacitive 2 point screen while the Basic has a 5 point Touch screen!
here are some pictures and the official Link with official specs (used Google translate).

enjoy !
I bought the paladin yesterday and play around with it.
Coming from galaxy nexus i9250 and ipad 2 4.3 this paladin feels pretty sluggish even with 4.0 ics. My main concern is speed as scrolling is rather slow even compare to an android 2.x machine such as the viewsonic one. Screen quality is not great but i dont expect much from $880 hong kong dollar machine.
I frankly think ics require dual core hardware to make it a satisfactory experience.
Yes, all suppliers are now out of stock of Novo 7 Advanced.
I tried to buy 1 at 20th december, so 1st they told me to wait until 28th, but later thay told that date of new party is unknown and there will be upgrated novo 7 advanced after 5th January. So waiting for it now..
As for Paladin, it's cheaper and has worse specs, but i guess, if people not going to play games and gonna use it just for browsing, reading, etc. it could be a nice buy as it's so cheap.
Mine arrived this afternoon and for £75 including p&p (and no import fees), I'm extremely impressed. Viewing angles could be better but they're more than acceptable, tested 720p mkv playback and it works flawlessly, ebook reading is fine, browsing is good once you stick Dolphin on it, form factor makes it very confortable to hold and ICS is very nicely put together. Overall it's well worth the money.
My expectations may be slightly lowered based on the last Chinese tablet I imported a few years for about the same. It was so poor it was unusable. This one I could easily see myself using on a regular basis for video playback and general browsing. If I didn't already have a Galaxy Note
Lee.

Yes, there is a lot of confusion, but basic and advanced 1.5ghz are out. Now there is only the 1ghz Novo7 Paladin (being called Advanced II) and the 1.5ghz "Novo 7 Elf" http://gadgetgreats.com/search.aspx?find=elf
All advanced out there seem to be refurbished so might as well go with Paladin or Elf. I am pre-ordering the elf now.
Elf vs Paladin Review
You should definitely go with NOVO 7 ELF by spending $20 more ( $149 at uPlay Tablet)
I have both Ainol NOVO 7 ELF and NOVO 7 Paladin, and have played with them for more than a month. I would say it's definitely worth spending $20 more to get NOVO 7 ELF.
NOVO 7 Paladin is the cheapest Android 4.0 tablet (you can get it for only $129 at uPlay Tablet, Ainol's representative in US). It's quite nice, but it has a few drawbacks:
1. The screen edge is not flat. No like iPad and most of other tablets, where the front face of the tablet is flat, NOVO 7 ELF has edge higher than the screen. This is because Ainol used to be an MP4 maker, and such design is cheaper.
2. It's MIPS based, not ARM based. There are lots of apps simply won't run on it, including Facebook app.
3. It's kind of slow. Although the spec looks great, the MIPS CPU is slow, especially when playing videos.
On the other hand, ELF is a much better choice because
1. It's running the latest many-core Allwinner ARM based A10 CPU. It's even faster than my MacBook Pro when loading webpages.
2. High resolution screen. Its 1024x600 resolution is higher than iPad 2.
3. Very thin.
4. 4X HD.
5. It has a front facing camera for video conferencing!
6. It has a HDMI port to output HD video to your big screen TV.
7. It's ARM based, so you don't have apps compatibility issue as you see in NOVO 7 Paladin, which is MIPS based CPU.
The only drawbacks are:
1. No standard Android Market installed. But you can install it yourself by following the instruction in the forum on uPlay Tablet.
2. No back facing camera.
i really like the paladin its a bit tricky for app compatibility but its a perfect system for someone that wants to mess with the system
From other forums i can see the IPS screen Aurora is now shipping from GadgetGreats http://gadgetgreats.com/search.aspx?find=aurora
As well as here
The paladin and the Avanced will soon be obsolete. All the hype is now with the IPS screen Aurora.
I have the Paladin and it is a great little tablet, but a pain to setup unless you know what you are doing. I spent several days getting mine sorted and I have then blogged the whole process on my blog at techlovincodgers(add a dot and a com on the end).
I hope it helps some other lost souls! Enjoy...
Hi all.
So, me & my fiancee both still have a 7" HDX, 32GB, LTE version. Is there any benefit to "upgrading" to the new Amazon Kindle HD8?
I know that those don't have an LTE option, but they do support MicroSD, which is nice. I could live without LTE, and tether to my phone.
But - app wise, compatibility with other devices, performance - are they any better than my 4 year old HDX? They ARE cheap, and that's pleasant, but I can't decide whether they are any good.
I wish Amazon had stuck to the high end devices, like the HDX, but I still struggle to find any other tablets that work as well as the Kindle devices. I personally really like Amazon's UI, I prefer it to stock Android.
Thanks for any advice/opinions!

HD 8 is inferior to HDX in terms of screen resolution, brightness, processor performance, memory speed and several important characteristics. Unless you require external storage support or are tied to Alexa and Amazon's eco-system HD 8 offers nothing appealing.
HD 8 can not be rooted (no custom ROMs) if that's a decision factor.

No, custom ROMs are not an issue, as stated, I like the Amazon interface. It's just that quite a few apps will no longer update on the HDX, Facebook being an example. I use the browser version now, but it is annoying.
And I am planning to buy an Amazon Echo & a Firestick, so I will be using Alexa, but I don't necessarily NEED that on my tablet...
Just wanted to revive this thread...
Both me & my fiancée still rock the Gen 3 HDX 7". Still love it. But; app compatibility & updates are getting fewer & slower. Now, I know the new Fire devices aren't as high end as these were - BUT - they are new. The HDX is 4/5 years old now, and the hardware & software make them less & less usable, I find?
Now, I will probably keep mine & root it & install a custom ROM on it, but we both actually LIKE the Amazon UI, and we are heavily tied into the Amazon ecosystem, with e-books, audio books, Amazon Prime, etcetera.
So; are the new ones any better with app support? Worth the €80?

I have several copies if both varients. All HDX are fully unlocked, running Lineage 14.1 and are my daily drivers. 8th gen HD 8s remain unrooted but tweaked with Nova and most Amazon apps/services disabled (using easily/fully reversible method). I like the larger panel on the HD 8 but it is decidedly heavier, slower and lower quality than the HDX. They both have their place. If you like Amazon's UI (including launcher) and their app portfolio then the HD 8 might be a good investment.
I've just found a tweak on here that helps keep the HDX usable, by allowing the GApps to be installed. However one of them is 100% NOT detected by Windows when I want to run a few ADB commands. Arse. Not at all. Charges via the USB port, but no data connection. That sucks...
So, the 8 may be coming to replace that one shortly, then. Is the 8 or the 7 a better option? You say it's heavier than the HDX; shame. I would have hoped that a newer device would have been leaner & sleeker. I preferred the 8 over the 7 due to the somewhat better hardware specs...

Fire 7 is decidedly entry level; HD 8 is decent albeit no HDX. You can read the specs and reviews. HDX remains the better device once unlocked and equipped with a custom ROM which isn't that difficult. However, if you prefer Amazons ecosystem and FireOS UX the HD 8 or 10 are clearly the better options.
Edit: Installing GApps on FireOS v4 is a disaster. Be happy you encountered a minor technical glitch that prevented a self inflicted wound. ?
