Chrome Night / Dark Mode May be Possible - LG V30 Questions & Answers

For those that sometimes use the reader option in Chrome, you may have already seen that the chrome app does a pretty good job of converting everything to a dark scheme. It does ditch the ads in that mode though so I'm guessing it's this that is incomplete on Google's end and why we don't have a working beta for dark/night mode yet.
While trying to get Chrome to force night or dark mode permanently I did come across an option for it, however I need someone with a little more Android code rules knowledge than myself to complete the task.
Basically, one of the lines in the Android Shared Preference file for Chrome is:
"night_mode_available" which is set to False.
I think if we can get this line switched to true and make it stick that way, "night mode" will work.
No matter what I do, the darn line of code continues to change back the second I open the app.
I have tried changing the file permissions, tried editing the file using code editors, text editors, apps, and still won't stick. Well it appears to stick until I open Chrome and then poof gone again.
If you're out there reading this a think you know how to change this line of code and make it stick then let's bring on the early Dark Chrome!
Attached is a shot of the line taken from the preferences manager app.
Thanks in advance for any help you may give, and of course if you figure it out, credit is all yours. I'm just hoping to work together to bring some more early dark modes to our phones.
Cheers

I think kiwi browser already has dark mode,... it is based on chrome (modded chrome i guess)

I'm going to look into that now and see what the manifest file looks like. Thanks for the tip!

Well that prob means it'll get pushed to Chrome next release, so I guess I can kill off this thread given that dark mode is definitely on it's way soon....
That's what I get for not checking the beta or dev or even Canary first lol.
Thanks @tottallyAnxious for the info

[Q] Noob question about Android multitasking

Hi guys, ive looked all around the web trying to find a solution but i cant say i found something yet so here it is.
I have a Nokia N900 right now and as much as i like it, its getting old, so im slowly looking for a new phone.
I feel like i might have been spoiled by the N900 multitasking and i want to know if my requirement for my new are possible to have.
So here it is: Is it possible to multitask with multiple instances of some applications? Really its only for email and sms, so i can for example copy text from one email, paste it in another one that is also open at the same time and can switch back and forth between them. In other words, can i have multiple sms/email conversations opened at the same time (one conversation with bob, one with jack, one with dave...) i often have more than 10-15 of them open at the same time on my n900 and if there would be only one reason for me to keep my phone it would be that.
I looked for multitasking apps with grid view hoping it would do that but from what i see you can only have one of those apps running at once anyway and it might seem crazy but for the number of time I switch between conversations on my n900, like i would using WLM for example, this could be a major dealbreaker for me if its not possible.
I'm sorry if it looks like a stupid question or something but ive completely missed the bus regarding android/ios/bb developpement as i used wm6.5 then switched directly to maemo5 2 years ago.
no one, really?
I don't think it works this way on Android, though you just might be able to find an app that does this.
thanks for the input
Sup Neo! I too went from the N900 to a GSII and I find myself not regretting it at all. There is no TRUE multitasking like the N900, at all from what I have found.
I'm not sure if any apps have been made available for such multi tasking, but I don't think anyone here who doesn't have N900 experience will understand what we mean.
Now it just needs an N900 writer to make something happen for android. Otherwise, I do NOT regret switching over, I absolutely love the speed and freedom of my new phone. The N900 was killing me on simple tasks like sending and receiving MMS, or connecting to the internet without destroying my battery life. No regrets.

Yo. Most Android apps can support multitask on its own UNLESS the developer has puposely disable it.
iOS and Android don't run in Windows style, ie, you can open 2 Mozilla Firefox windows at the same time. Copy and paste work the same as the pc.
So I guess you would have problems in the multiple email opening thing, most phones cannot.
So my suggestion is to keep your N900 as a email phone and change to android or iPhone as your main phone.

Having two phones would suck, and I'm sure he would get over the whole multi tasking issue after a week of using the SII
But I have to say, nothing is as impressive as bouncing around from different windows, and different text messages, and different apps as much as you want.
You just can't substitute for it

Ok OK so Android does have "True" multi-tasking
I would like to see it have Multiple Visible applications running at once and accessible between each other. Maybe that's what we should say when we want to see "Real" multitasking, and not just "true" multitasking.
Once again, still satisfied, but we have a craving that we want to fill as well sometimes.
I would like to see android implement this. Webos(palm/hp) had "card style" applications windows and it was epic. That's said, I'm back to android. Just sayin

Hmm, depends what kind of multitasking you like, the one that actually let's you fully quits apps or one that is fully automated, meaning that you just use it without doing anything and still feel the multitasking, ie you press the home button and it still runs, however you may not notice it, until u use the same app again. However, this means you have to restart every night, to really close the apps, otherwise android will manage for you.
So it means that apps run indefinitely, and when you reopen the app, it will revert to what you did before, you can complete task like scanning eg those with a progress bar and you will see it filling the bar until completion even in the homescreen or other apps, and as I said, unless the developer wants to close the app when you are not using it.

That's Androids Multitasking in a Nutshell, completely understand how it works and it does work well I might add. But it's just the extra step of being able to visually locate the running apps and access them. If you look at your Task Killer for example, you see the running tasks correct? But in order to use them, you have to navigate to the app and click it, no matter where it is on your system.
What I would love to see would be more of a Click and Open option to viewing your running tasks. Sort of like a back screen when you Zoom Out of your desktop on android. The same way you can see all of your desktops, you would be able to see all of your running apps and select which one to open, or to close.

That looks very interesting, is that for ICS? Even if it were for only one instance of each app, it would be more than we have now.
I just hate going from one app, to sending a text, to opening that app again. But I am not dying without it, that's for sure

Look, I'm not arguing with anyone here, just explaining the idea behind what us N900 users were used to and how useful it would be if implemented in android, this is all.

I suppose this is your first android phone? We're having a discussion here no worries. Yeah but if android were to use the window thing, there would be 10-20 Windows everytime. That's where the homescreen comes, just drag all your frequently used apps there and done, the so called window is done

Andriod multitasks. You can have a ton of apps open at the same time and switch between them. However you can not have more then one instance of the same app running. So while you cant open say gmail and open multiple mails in seperate frames you can still switch between say a web page and mail.
There might be so great mail apps out there that handle mail seperatly, im just not sure which would do it. Bottom line,x the android OS is more then capable of doing what you want. Someone just needs to make or find the app for your needs.

That's just it, that would be the thing I KNOW android doesn't have yet wish it did. We all know we can't have more than one instance of the same app running at once, that much is clear. But having it would be the part I crave, and I'm sure others as well.
Imagine being able to reference to a previous text with someone else whenever you want to while working on another text with someone different.
Like I said, I UNDERSTAND YOU CAN'T DO IT, I just wish you could!
and I wish people would stop explaining it to me lol, I KNOW, and I'm not asking for anyone to tell me how it works. I'm just saying, it would be nice, this is all!
also, being able to bounce from Xterm to open notepads or texts to anything, now that is how you process info on a phone. We'll never be satisfied, but for now I am.
Thanks for the replies fellas.

[APP][CM9]Evernote/Kindle UI for ICS

If you're running the latest ICS nightly (since 2012-02-02, I think) and use Evernote, you've probably noticed that it not longer displays the tablet UI.
For some reason, the Evernote app calculates width of the screen is 4.xxxx instead of the 7.xxxx required for displaying the tablet UI.
I've modified the APK to ignore the calculation so that the app displays the tablet UI.
I hope you like it.
com.evernote-2.apk
UPDATE: Some people have asked me to look at the Kindle app too.
Looking into it, but it is a little more complex ...
If you already have Evernote, you'll need to uninstall it before trying to install this one.
Tip:
Copy this to /system/app to ensure you'll never lose it ...
That way if you update the app thru the market and lose the tablet UI you can uninstall updates

Hey, cool! I read about this in your posts on the user thread. How did you do this? I don't know enough to diagnose it, but I would be interested in digging through a couple different apps in this manner.
Do you have access to the block of code you changed or are you dis-assembling this to make this work? This is a common problem across a few google apps as well (chrome, docs, etc) Just wondering if you had any insight into the root problem.
Yeah, that's why I want to know as well. I saw people asking you to take a look at the Kindle app over in the development thread, and I figure instead of buying us dinner you could just teach us how to fish, you know?
Yeah I disassembled the apk.
Essentially, I searched the decompiled files for the word "tablet" ... When I thought I found what I was looking for, I compared it against the logcat.

Hey guys (and probably gals too) I'm sorry I haven't posted anything yet ... Work's been kinda hectic ...it appears I have some time this weekend, so I'll look into the kindle app ... If I have time (if the kindle is easy), I'll look at aldiko too
Since I don't really use these apps .. screenshots would help, I realize they'd be doctored and/or annotated

FWIW the official Kindle app update that just showed up on my GN claims that it's fixed margins and spacing on tablets. I'm not near my Nook, but let us know if it works.

Yeah unfortunately it's not fixed on the Nook Color or the Touchpad.
I'll upload a picture of the Kindle app and describe the differences of tablet mode and phone mode on the Nook. I am very interested in having my NC as well as my TP displaying the Kindle app correctly for landscape mode. Without the split screen with two pages displayed in landscape mode, it's a long traverse to read a line across the entire length if the tablet. Lol
If you still have time to look into this, I would be very grateful. No worries either way.
Thanks for the Evernote fix!

It is fixed in CM9 on the nook color. I have tested it. The margins and line spacing is much improved. You still cannot adjust them, but it is very readable. Make sure you have the very latest version.

Hi leapinar,
I am on the latest version and the Kindle app is not in tablet mode at 160 dpi. I do see the changes you mentioned. However just to be clear, when you hold your Nook in landscape orientation does the screen split and have two side by side pages like an open book?
Edit: I disassembled the apk, but it is not clear at all to me what is triggering the tablet view/install. I tried a few edits and reassembled the apk and nadda.. At this point I am just blindly throwing darts..
Guys,
Sorry about disappearing ... I was out of town for work for a couple of days and busy on a new work project.
I've looked at the new version of the Kindle app, and yes the margins are better, but having the ability to adjust them like the phone would be ideal.
I'm looking at the code to see if I can just swap out the tablet reader view with the phone view, giving us the phone menu options.
A little slow going ...

Would just like to second this - the app is actually semi-unusable without it being switched because there's no way to access 'menu' (no hard button on the NC and no softbutton shows up in the app).

Permanent desktop mode in Chrome on Jellybean?

I just upgraded to Jellybean yesterday and ICS Browser+ stopped working for obvious reasons. So now I am stuck with the chrome browser and wondering if there is some way that I can force it to always use desktop mode and never default to phone. I dont want to hit the "request desktop site" regularly and would just wish the setting would stick permanently.
But is that possibl?. ICS Browser+ gave me that functionality but it doesnt work with Jellybean. And mind you I am looking for a solution/fix/hack that WORKS in Chrome, and is NOT interested in switching browser...
Hoping someone might be able to provide the magic key to making this possible

Open browser and in the address bar type about:debug nothing will happen then go to the browser settings and you'll have more options. Select settings, debug, uastring. Good to go. some phones it doesn't stick and have to do every time use browser
Oops...my bad...doesn't work with chrome but it does on the stock browser. Not sure what the string is for chrome. On opera it's aboutpera so maybe about:chrome?
The about trick for ICS only worked till the browser was closed or you rebooted, so sadly still not a permanent fix :/

Well then i guess you either do the about: debug and change your uastring or have a mobile browser. I personally don't have any issues with it sticking, still desktop on reboot.
You could try this
http://bit.ly/A5y6tT
I tried the about debug trick on my SGS2 back when I was actively using that. And that never stuck on reboot, and got turned off as soon as i closed the browser.
And why google for it when I suspected this site was to go to site for the android phones, but perhaps I am wrong in that assumption. I mean I did actually try the search build into this forum and since that didn't yield anything then I asked
Point being..i didn't make the YouTube video. I wasn't even on YouTube. I shared what works for me. Sorry what i offered wasn't a solution, but there really was no reason to yell. You asked for help, i offered. If don't like what everyone suggested, see link above.

The last link you shared was a hidden comment to go google for the solution . That is what sorta ticked me off <.<. BUT that being said the proposed fix does work on chrome, but NOT with the stock JB browser.
I was led to believe that the stock JB browser was chrome but matter of factly it can't be Chrome, considering the chrome-command-line fix does not seem to do anything to the stock browser at all. But it works on the version of Chrome from Play Store

No actually it was quite relevant. Seeing how you missed it...basically if going to be rude and yell at people who could have skipped over your thread so could get a new rom or mod..google it yourself.

Im not getting a new rom, thanks for offering the suggestion tho . I prefer the stock Samsung feel, but just don't agree on some of the settings. And my own skills into messing with system files and what not arent exactly on par with what I would expect would be required, hence why I am seeking for a mod, rather then building one myself from scratch.
Nevermind.
And I can only aspire to one day build my own rom.

Blocking Mode found on the Verizon Note 2. Not fully functional.

Well, bad news folks. It seems that while we can indeed get to Blocking Mode, it doesn't appear to be fully functional. When I first found it and tested it out, it successfully blocked the calls I made from my computer via Gmail and Skype. But after some further tests this afternoon, it didn't actually block any calls made by some friends via their cell phones. So, while it's there, it doesn't seem like it's fully functional. At the very least, maybe this gives us some hope for someone out there to find a way to get it working consistently or that Verizon will enable it in a future update.

I was playing around with one of my favorite apps Any Cut. Regrettably, Any Cut (which isn't available in the Play Store any more) doesn't work correctly on Jelly Bean, but it works enough to be able to take a look at many of the shortcuts it's able to find. And low and behold, Blocking Mode was in the list. Since Any Cut is problematic on Jelly Bean (it kind of works, but not completely), I found another app on the Play Store that operates in much the same way that Any Cut does - QuickShortcutMaker.
No root required!
Here's how to get to it:
1) Download QuickShortcutMaker from the Play Store. (Note: the app closed on me a few times while trying to use it, but it eventually worked)
2) After QuickShortcutMaker installs, open it up.
3) Type Blocking Mode in the text field. The app is pretty slow when it comes to populating the available shortcuts, so it might take a little bit. Once it finishes, tap on the first result at the top (It will say "Settings" with Blocking mode underneath it.
4) Rename the shortcut to whatever you want. It's named "Settings" by default, and I changed mine to "Blocking Mode."
5) Tap "OK."
6) You'll now have a shortcut on your homescreen that will take you right into Blocking Mode (the icon will be a cog just like the Settings icon). Open it up and and block away! (Note: the shortcut on your homescreen will be the only way to access Blocking Mode, so if you delete it, you'll have to create a new one in order to get back into the settings for it)
Known issues:
The app will force close when trying to add contacts to the custom allowed contact list. But it seems to work fine when selecting "Favorites" as opposed to creating a new custom list. So if adding contacts to a custom list is force closing for you, add the contacts that you want to come through to your general favorites list when Blocking Mode is enabled, and then use the Favorites option in the Blocking Mode settings.
Thank you!! Now lets figure out how to get the S Planner widget on this thing.

I am as well. It's probably due to the fact that Verizon doesn't have it fully implemented. Try adding the contacts you want to come through to your general contacts favorites list and then select the favorites option in Blocking Mode. That worked for me. I've updated the original post to reflect this.
I didn't think of that. Thanks!

Cant help but think Samsung left it in on purpose so we'd find it and shove it to vzw.
Alot of speculation was they leaked the insecure bootloader for the gs3 as well.
This is a great find, thanks.

Blocking mode allows you to set a specified period of time during which the phone will not ring. But you can set it so that the phone will still ring for certain contacts during the time it's enabled.
For instance, I don't want to be disturbed while I'm sleeping by random calls or texts, but I don't put my phone into silent mode while I'm asleep because I'm worried that I'll miss an emergency call from family. With Blocking Mode, I can block all calls/notifications from coming through except calls/notifications from certain people. So calls/notifications that I feel might be important, like from family or certain friends, will come through, but all others won't. That way I'm only woken up by people who I feel are important enough to wake up for.
It's also helpful in other situations when you're busy and don't want to be disturbed except by certain people.
Wow EXCELLENT find OP!!! Much kudos to you!
I can't help but feel so offended by Verizon and how they butchered this great phone, or rather tried to...
After almost a month solid holding it back from us, they finally release it and what do you know? They strip it of features that are intended to be part of the phone as sold by Samsung. The fact that it's still there but HIDDEN is proof of this concept.
We need to send this info to all the big phone journalism sites out there like Engadget, Gizmodo, Droid-Life etc and blow some serious smoke up Verizon's ass. Let them know we are disgusted by their attempts to remove features from our phones that no other carrier has done.
Hopefully they realize they were wrong and to fix the negative publicity they decide to send out an update that adds the missing features back. They better

I sent it into Droid-Life this morning after I found it, and a short time ago they posted a story about it - How to: Enable "Blocking Mode" on Verizon's Galaxy Note 2
I doubt this particular issue will get enough coverage to cause any measurable negative publicity, but hopefully it can at least bring some of the stuff Verizon is choosing to do to light for a greater audience.

Cool thats what i tought. Thanks for verifying for me!
tried this, and like others got the force closes when trying to add contacts to "custom". Problem is, this isn't working. I even tried allowing no contacts (to block everything), and every call or text still goes through!
I tried this by calling from my work phone (that isn't anywhere in my contact list), and even call or texting from my regular contacts. These should all be blocked, but they all get through- texts and calls.
I've tried rebooting, but nothing seems to be blocked.

This can also be achieved using a custom Launcher like Nova or Apex. To do this, long press on the home screen, click "Shortcuts" --> "Activities" --> "Blocking Mode".
Granted, the OP way uses the stock TouchWiz, but just offering another solution.
Enjoy!

Yeah, the original post has been updated to reflect the fact that it's actually not fully functional.
At least it gives us some hope that perhaps someone can get it functioning or that it will be enabled in the future.
bummer. I hoped I was just doing something wrong

works on my Verizon SGS3
Confirmed it works. Nova Launcher's built-in shortcut mechanism also lists Blocking Mode.

Can confirm working on Verizon stock:
Message: Enter key=new line
Web: Desktop as default and exit on menu
Camera: Shutter sound on/off menu
TW: Infinite scrolling
Others may work but I just didn't try. Excellent work kkoolpatz!

Very cool. I'm on cleanrom vzw 1.0 and these work perfectly. All I added was to remove the software update in settings and the exit option on the browser.
Just tried out some of them... works well... thanks!
This is not original development. This topic needs to be moved.
I wasn't sure it belonged here either but the original thread in the International GN2 had it in original development so I just followed suit. Please feel free to move.

Thread moved to General. Please remember that development is only for development and not all development related threads. In this case you were sharing development, therefore it wasn't actual development. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Rename customer.xml and you get bubble notifications back on lockscreen.
Enable call blocking (Not blocking mode), add this to feature.xml:
<!--Call Blocking -->
<CscFeature_Setting_EnableMenuBlockCallMsg>true</CscFeature_Setting_EnableMenuBlockCallMsg>

So just rename customer.xml or change .xml to something like .bak? Just seeking some clarification. Thanks!

Awesome, it works! Do you know what app needs to be frozen to stop with the help tip when the bubble is on the lockscreen?

No. It eventually went away for me though. If I was to guess, I'd try setup wizard. I haven't really looked into it though because it went away.

Cool, I appreciate the help. I found out after further research that you can go in to settings>application settings>all>help and then just disable that. That worked for me to get rid of the constant helpful tip.
Well I copy pasted the code into the features.xml file for the various Web browser additions, like perma-Desktop view mode and show user agent profile under advanced settings. But none of them worked. I looked through the web section to make sure there were no countering duplicates, and there wasn't.
I went ahead and rebooted into recovery, wiped cahce/dalvik, fixed permissions and booted back up and no go. Anyone get these settings working?

See, you shouldn't need to copy anything in, but simply change trues to false and so forth. If you pasted a line in, I'd be suspicious that you have the line in there already overriding the new one. Most of the CSC features are already in the file.

Yeah I checked through for duplicate lines and didn't see any of the 3 lines that I added before pasting them in.
Just to add to the mix, somehow adding 3 lines that affected the browser only, I found that my Samsung keyboard symbol overlay was missing. So I just deleted my custom features.xml and restored the backup and it's all back to normal again. Was also seeing wierdness with MMS with the modified xml as well.
Anyway I'll look again just to be sure, but trying to decide if I really care enough for it at this point.
Update: yeah for sure there isn't a single duplicate. I copied the XML to my desktop and searched through with keywords and there was nothing that matched. Then read through it line by line and saw a few entries that seem similar in purpose, but are worded differently. I am unsure how to modify these or which one I should modify at all to get the desired affect, so I am leaving it alone for now.
Ironically enough however I found a solution to an annoying "feature" that's been plaguing me for awhile now. Whenever I toggle to Camcorder or open up the camera app into Camcorder, it would ask me what video mode I want to shoot in. This was driving me nuts, and sure enough it's being caused by a CSC feature. Well I false'd it up and yay no more annoying popup. Problem is, just like with the web browser changes/additions to feature.xml, whenever I modify the file all of a sudden a bunch of other things break including MMS and my keyboard's symbol overlay. Wtf =/ It's so frustrating being right there and having the solution to one problem, and then opening up a can of worms in another.
I could understand if I somehow modified parts to the keyboard CSC, and that would be why it's breaking, but I'm not. I'm going in, finding ONE line, and changing true to false. That's it. Why is this breaking other parts of my CSC? Any ideas Adrynalyne?

I have a feeling it is the editor you are using.
Things like notepad add extra characters to files which can invalidate the entries and cause other errors. Try something like notepad ++.
