[Q] Customize or replace htc car panel app

I use my car dock and I'm glad to have it. However, I don't like several aspects of it. I'd like to be able to change what apps it gives shortcuts for (specifically want google play music and pandora) and want it to auto start bluetooth (but not auto turn-off when removed). Would anyone point me at instructions for modding the factory app or make any recommendations for 3rd part apps?
I like an app called Car Widget at the Play store?.
Google Car Home still works on this phone, you need to hunt down the apk, it won't show available in the market.

BubbleUPnP great on Q!

Hi,
I recently installed Cyanogenmod 10 on my Q.
The install process was quite smooth. (see the Q developer forums for tutorials)
I chose the ROM with the amp support as I have two nice Bose speakers collecting dust.
Well no longer. The Q is now my main music device in my living room.
First, I was very excited about the Cheapcast app (quite a bit of stir about that here on the forums).
I could easily cast my music from my phone or tablet via Google Music. Worked fine, for a while.
Cheapcast, however, is nog very stable for streaming music. Hiccups, slow, connection loss.... I had to reboot the Q a lot.
I then tried Bubble UPnP (installed on Q, some minor config) combined with Cast To UPnP/DLNA for GMusic installed on your phone or tablet. This setup rocks and has been serving me music for the past couple of weeks.
You can try these apps for free, but there are time limits per session. Buying is well worth it.
I still preferred the original Q with the social streaming thing. But my current setup comes close: it's stable and easy. Somewhat slow in responding to actions like skip track, but it'll do.
If you have 5$ to spend on apps, give this a go. You won't be sorry.
Can you post the configuration for BubbleUPnP? I can't get the cast gmusic app to see my bubbleUPnP renderer.
Some settings

Hi there, here's a few settings. I don't remember which ones are default and which ones I changed:
Local renderer
- enable
- allow remote control
Local media server
- enable
- advertise on lan
- allow remote clients: all clients
Cloud content
- google music: enable
- select account: none
Control:
- kill on inactivity: never
- start on boot
- volume keys
- media keys
- lockscreen controls
I do remember having to reboot te Q to make certain settings stick.
Hope this helps, regards,
eddib
Thank you! That did the trick.
Now also from the browser
You can now also cast directly from your Chrome browser with the Google Cast extension.
My Q started showing up recently.

I just wanted to pop in and thank you for this thread! I bought a Q from eBay a couple months back, and after setting up CM10, BubbleUPnP was the next thing I installed. It works great! While there have been changes with the most recent Google Play Music that prevents some capabilities, everything else works flawlessly. BubbleUPnP really does make the Q a serious streaming device again. Cheers!

Yep, Google seems to have locked down some functionality. You can still cast, but the receiving end has been secured with encrypted keys.
Cheapcast no longer works. I guess they want money for licenses.
Nor does casting to BubbleUPnP on your Q from the Google Music App (with Cast To UPnP/DLNA for GMusic; the app's gone from the App store btw).
I now cast music via the BubbleUPnP app to the Q, so not really using the Google Cast protocol, but the actual UPnP.
The interface for browsing music on you phone via BubbleUPnP is far from perfect, but it still gets the job done.
To use this, you need to add your Google Music library in BubbleUPnP.
If anyone finds another way to keep using the Google Music app to control the casting to the Q with BubbleUPnP, please let us know here.
I think it might be possible to use the Google Music App as a controller for BubbleUPnP, not sure though.
Hey guys,
just a quick message to let you know that the BubbleUpnp app has gotten some great updates recently and is now much cleaner and more responsive.
Also I found that CM 10.2 (from here in the forums) works best for this setup. It allows for the Q to run without screen or mouse attached, with BubbleUpnp running in the background. Other CM versions I've tested all needed the BubbleUpnp app to run in the foreground (thus needing screen and mouse).
I made a quick write-up for installation and added all files to my Google Drive, get it here
If this can be done with free apps, please reply here.
... now I need to find how to get the LED rings to do something
Does BubbleUpnp automatically load when the Q boots up? Also, if you could get the LED ring working again, you would be the hero of this sub forum

Yes, you can configure the upnp app to start on boot.
For the led, there is an interesting thread here somewhere that discusses getting led functionality back. It should be possible to make this into an app.
i just got started learning Android dev, so for now, this is a bit out of my league.

Is there some setting in BubbleUPNP I'm missing? I still don't see the Nexus Q when I try to cast Google Play Music.

Does the Gear S have media controls?

I understand there is a music player. You can control the music from the music player on your phone or on your watch, but I use Spotify most of the time and don't actually have any music on the phone itself. Right now I have the Gear Live and it works great for media control. Anything that would pop up controls on my lock screen, for instance: I also get controls for video too like Netflix when I'm streaming to Chromecast. I've been unhappy with the very limited cards interface of Android Wear and was looking at the Gear S but I really need media controls.
Also will the Gear S only work with Samsung Messages? Can I use Samsung Messages on the watch while using something else on my phone? Right now I'm using the Google Messenger app they just released with the beautiful material design look.
I would love it to have basic Bluetooth music controls also which is a MUST. Very few ppl still use the stock music apps and not online services.
That way we can control other devices and stereos also.

Hm. So the Media Controls app doesn't seem to have made it to the Gear S even though it is on the Gear 2 and all of the others. Not sure why it isn't there.
The Gear S will only work fully with Samsung's messaging app on the phone. Hangouts functionality beyond notifications is locked down to Android Wear and Android devices by Google.
So there is no Spotify control on gear s? ?
I control Spotify flawlessly from my gear s. It's a wonderful feature.
Actually there is one. Stock music player is the basic bluetooth media controller.. just click 3 dots on the bottom right of the widget. Then you have option to 1 control device and 2 control music on the gear. Choose control device. Now you can control the media with your gear s.
I call samsung as samsuck but its not that sucks to remove basic bluetooth media controller. Hope it helped =)

Stock Gear S (EU version at least) fully work with Hangout. You can answer by canned answer or by Keyboard or by Voice Input You must install also the Wear app even if you have not a Wear Device, (answer API are in Wear app and not on phone app)
Otherwise there are app on store for extended notification wich works for Gear S with not last firmware (from specific operator).
The Gear Notification Extender app in the Play Store let's me use forward and backward and pause controls when I'm listening to Google Play Music from my phone.

Assistance Required with Google Music Next/Previous Buttons

Hi All,
Recently purchased and installed a Joying head unit (4GB, PX5 Octa Core) (link)
I use google music for all my music needs. I have uploaded all my personal music onto the google music cloud servers so I can stream or download them whenever I want making it an ideal solution. I installed the google music app on my android head unit and everything works great appear from one small thing.
The steering wheel NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons are not responding on the music app. Its killing me cause at the moment every time I have to change a song ive got to touch the screen (not ideal when driving).
Volume buttons work fine but ive tried different things to try and get the other buttons to work within the app like button re mappers via the app store etc.
Does anyone know of any way to get the NEXT and PREVIOUS song wheel buttons to work with the google music app. I will love you so much
I think its a software thing with the app cause poweramp and some other music players work with the wheel buttons. If this is the case I was hoping that there is an app that can run in the background which can pickup the wheel buttons and translate them so they work with the google music app.
Any assistance would be great. I hope someone can help.
Did you ever figure this out? I am having the same issue with Spotify.
Try MTCD forums as you have a MTCD not MTCB unit. Suggest searching first for the answer.

Connect to car stereo. Huawei Mediapad M5 8.4"

Hi,
I have been using my Nexus 7 (2012) in my car as a satnav and for listening to music by plugging it into the radio usb input. It played music fine using Google play but it's a bit slow now for the satnav bit so I bought an M5 tablet.
Satnav app works ok but getting the music to play is not so good.
With the Nexus I would connect it to the radio with a usb cable, switch on the radio, select usb, open Google play, select the album, select play and off it went....easy. Not the same with the M5, after opening google play I'm asked to select connection mode, charging, MIDI, transfer files, transfer photos. If I select any option other than charging it reverts after a couple of seconds to charging and occasionally plays the music after about 20 seconds (missing this part of the album). If I pause or stop then it'll occasionally stop or just continue.
If the Nexus can do all this well then surely the M5 can, am I doing something wrong.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Cheers
Ron
Is your screen on when music cuts out?
Not sure about USB - but via bluetooth, EMUI devices have issues with background music playback. Your screen needs to be on and your music player needs to be in the foreground. Otherwise, EMUI situationally (I think it depends on the msuic player app and available RAM and other things) kills bluetooth/media processes in the name of battery optimization. Music playback behavior becomes as you describe. It's usually fixed temporarily by toggling bluetooth on and off a couple times, or it's fixed permanently by freezing the Power Genius app (with root).
That's not necessarily your problem - but just saying...
Thanks,
I've been through all the settings (I think) but no change, it's pretty rubbish really that a 6 year old tablet outperforms the M5 on a feature that you would imagine should get better integrated into a more modern device. The M5 may have some good features but there are some aspects that are difficult to live with and ultimately i'll probably return it.
Cheers
Ron
I think it's the Android version that is ``causing`` this, not the Mediapad M5
Hi,
Thanks, that's interesting, do I understand that you think that it's a feature (or glitch) in Android 8 and therefore all devices (all makes) running this version will be experiencing the same? It would be hard to believe that this version would be released without testing to see whether such a common use for these devices would work as they have for many years!
I'm really looking for a fix/work around.
Cheers
Ron
