So, how're your guys' batteries and screens holding up? - LG V30 Questions & Answers

It's come to the point that I can justify retiring my old xt1254; dunno if the onboard storage is going or what, but even following a clean flash and accounting for BCL slowdowns, it's been running exceedingly badly lately.
Verizon is also axing CDMA soon, so it's a good time to give them the middle finger once and for all. Gonna get me a H932(U if possible for not much more, may as well) to hopefully maintain similar coverage.
Anyway.
How're your batteries holding up? What kind of capacity loss have you experienced over the last couple years, anyone needed to outright replace yet?
How are your display panels holding up under normal use?

Hey! Very good to see you!
Mine are still fine.
Verizon actually announced they are keeping CDMA for one more year. Not enough people ready. Now end of 2020:
https://stopthecap.com/2019/08/01/verizon-delays-shutdown-of-3g-cdma-network-until-the-end-of-2020/
Rooting T-MOBILE H932 is harder than the others. Really only buy that one of you're a T-Mobile customer.

I dunno much about coverage, it's good enough i think. my phone (h932) got swollen battery after 1 year usage, but still it always got over 4hrs screen on time, and about 16hrs daily usage . Possible reason: charger. The Display, never have any issue so far, only faded oleo-phobic coating that makes your screen not smooth as new.

Both battery and display are great after a year of Heavy usage.

No problems with battery and screen since I got my H932 in May 2018. My battery doesn't last as long. Maybe a 10% drop, but that's to be expected for any phone after 16 months. My friend has the same phone since March 2018 and no problems.

I have it mine since day one release. And everything is working the same. I used an app to measure battery life. It recorded I lost 11% off my battery.

Yo!
I've been lurking off and on, not completely absent; the last year and a half have been a huge horrible mess and things are finally calming down. I was around for some of the LAFsploit brilliance in particular.

Well good for them. Their service has been deteriorating in this area regardless, to the point where I'd probably be better off on GSM anyway, so they can still go shove it :v
Need b71 for CDMA-equivalent coverage, so I'll be needing the TMO radio. Unless someone figured out how to get the US998 to pick it up?
I also considered getting a v35 and crossflashing it if needed, but by the sounds of it I'd be incurring some extra cost to unlock and root. Still, the memory upgrade would be nice for future-proofing...hmmm...

Not terribly unlikely. Phones don't usually have much spike suppression, so a crappy charger or even a defective good charger can do some really bad things. On the other hand, li-ion/li-po batteries are sensitive; some minor manufacturing defect might have just taken a while to make trouble. Who knows! It's a testament to LG's kernel efficiency that you were still getting decent battery life.

As I recall, after their cluster**** of exploding phones and mass-bricking of still-functioning ones, Samscum started making an aim for 5% capacity loss over two years (and using it as a selling point, I think to help justify their prices). The impression from LG's marketing was that they weren't going to match that specifically, but they were going to try harder than other manufacturers.
10% doesn't seem too unreasonable to me either, and glue aside, the battery isn't too bad to get at :good:

what voltage batteries are they? 3.7v or 3.8v
They are both 3.7...the paint on the batteries is melted too from the heat...you can see silver underneath

Well, if you can't get your phone to work, at least now you can use it as a grenade or something of the sort.
hahahhahahaha yes....that would prob work...except I paid a lot of money for it so Ill let vzw do that
Really am curious now what hardware revision those two phones are, if they share common parts, though it is merely speculation on what could be a cause.
Mind looking? It is the P/N code on the label under the battery, last line. Including letter(s) after a space.
Mine sometimes get hot but nowhere near what you are reporting

That isn't too bad. I have seen 130 degrees F before.
Im ok now...they sent me a gnex ...I know Im going to be happy with it ... The vzw tech even agreed the rezound has a crap battery but all is good besides that. Im gonna flash miui on my gnex and Ill be set to rock

It really seems funny both devices that I have are pcd 01/04/12
I wonder how long they sat before PCD got them and refurbished........quality control is bad these days.....

Parts revision "XA" is the designation of all five units I've asked of people so far with extreme heat issues: your two phones, my first one, and those a couple of other users have.
I don't have extreme heat issues with my current "B" revision phone.
Companies change certain parts in the assembly lines over time to improve the product, e.g. make it cheaper to produce or more efficient. Sounds like a quality control issue in XA models that was addressed in B models and up (if any exist past B yet).
I suspect most anybody that has issues with the phone temperature going over 120F/49C and *staying* up there under moderate or light use, or gets to 131F/55C or more has rev. XA and is more likely to complain of overheating.
Disclaimer: I am no expert by any means and this is still all an educated guess at best. Just from personal experience, I could not find any software or firmware difference between my own XA and B models to account for the different performances in handling heat... Which leaves hardware as the cause.
HTC reps have even stated 120F is the max safe operating temp; that is when the green indicator light flashes. A case could be made that the entire XA line has defective hardware and replaced under warranty, if a poll of users should confirm this, or there is enough evidence from persons that have both models and can isolate all other factors.

mine is XA as well and gets pretty hot, 115-120. Maybe its time to get an exchange.
Mine got hot on ics but not on gb.. You should just get a replacement and try hboot reset or you should go to the HTC test menu and do a battery test
*#*#3646#*#*
overheating
I just received a certified preowned device and it could fry an egg with the heat it was producing. It also is an xa. One more thing is I couldn't get it a full charge after a whole night. They're sending me another one hopefully it won't be an xa.

mine is XA and std and ext 3.7 batts and always gets hot after moderate use for 15min or so. i havent even used the "high performance" power settings in months because I don't want the phone to explode!
I have a rev. B phone that overheats and dies pretty damn quick if you use it. Light web browsing would kick it up to 110-120 degrees, and drain the battery in a matter of a few hours games or anything else graphically intense could send it up to 130, and probably even 140 but I pull my battery before I let that happen.
What I thought was weird was my first replacement phone ran pretty badly too, then I stopped by a Verizon store and got my 3.8v battery switched for a 3.7v and my first phone ran a little better, but the replacement ran perfectly, until the charger port broke.
-.- 2 tries later and this phone is running perfectly, refuses to go over 115 under the most intense load, and the battery lasts for awhile. It's a rev. B phone too.
Seems to me you have to get the right voltage battery for the right hardware.
XA with a 3.7 battery on ICS here. My phone gets so hot that after 10-15 of surfing, i put it back in my pocket and my leg starts sweating. 120F+
Although i shouldn't have to, i've learned to just use it in short bursts. Also, i did NOT have the overheating issues with GB. I just stick with ICS because it is easily 2-3 times faster than GB. I just keep a charger nearby.
Also, on GB, my standard battery would last me until I got home from work. On ICS, my extended battery barely makes it until lunch

[Q] Which phone to upgrade to before end of year?

I want to take advantage of being able to upgrade my DNA at no cost to me, so I need to do that by the end of this year. The company is switching to employee purchase of phones starting next year. I'm on Verizon. Looking for recommendations from those that have switched, or are contemplating a switch soon. I've primarily been looking at the Turbo, LG G3, and One M8. I've been on HTC devices, so am comfortable/familiar with Sense, and currently running a One based ROM on my DNA. I'm also fond of the wireless charging options, but don't know if a lack of it is enough to rule a particular phone out. Being able to root is a plus. Also leaning to a replaceable battery being a plus as well. Wife recently picked up a Note 4. I'll look at it some more, but that seems almost too big.
Is anyone aware of any new devices due out this month? If not, what is your favorite option today and why?
Thanks!
I just got the Note 4 and love it!!
Also came from the DNA and I can tell you, you'll be very pleased with the battery life!!
I was also considering the new Nexus device but since it isn't on VZW yet and I didn't want to wait with my DNA screen shattered I went with the Note 4 and I'm definitely not disappointed.
The Droid Turbo was released not too long ago, and I'm really leaning towards it for my contract upgrade in a couple of weeks. It's still an internal battery unfortunately, but what caught my attention was it having nearly twice the capacity of the DNA. Since I have to charge my DNA halfway through the day, I'd be more than satisfied with the Turbo's battery life. Plus, it has some beefy specs as well. Camera has been reported to have some trouble with delay, but that might be corrected in a software update.
I did a little more reading last night and am starting to lean towards the LG G3. A little smaller than the Note 4 which is a good thing. Replaceable battery, rootable, and with a $10 hack can be changed to Qi wireless charging. I need to go spend some hands on time with it in the store. I've considered the Turbo as well, but with the reported camera issues, and some reporting earpiece volume issues, I just find myself questioning Motorola's product testing if they send these issues out with a hope to fix them later in a software update.

Hmm, I'm now thinking about the Note 4 as well due to its camera features and the S-pen. So, when you say pleased with the battery life...how pleased are we talking? I guess getting through the day wouldn't be nearly as much a problem as it is sometimes with the DNA?

I don't know about you but toward the end of my 2 years on the DNA I'd have to plug my phone in after about 5-6hrs of moderate use or it was flat dead!
So far with the Note 4 I've actually managed 2 full days on one charge a couple times.. Keeping in mind it's a new phone so I'm playing on it a lot!
Also the fast charge is awesome! I have had it go from 50% to a full charge in about 15 minutes on the charger! (that's only using the included "adaptive fast charger" from Samsung)
The S-pen is cool! I felt like it might be one of those things that lost its "cool factor" once I played with it enough but I keep finding new useful reasons pull it out.. Easily screenshoting and cropping an Instagram post using the Screen Write function for example.
Or more obvious things like quickly jotting down a number or reminder. Which are a lot more useful and easy than I had though they would be.
The chances of getting a fully functional ROOT seem far out if it ever happens.. So that's a bit of a downside. But I can say this is the first phone I've had that I wasn't just dying to root. I honestly have very little reason to root it other than getting Lollipop before VZW and Samsung get it on the update manager.
The phone is big! I will say that.. Probably one of the only things I've had issues with is one handed typing. But I'm getting use to it. It can be very difficult stretching that thumb up to reach things with one hand but I guess that's the price we pay for a large screen. Which is a beautiful display by the way... Both cameras rock too! It's packed with fx, filters and neat camera features that are a lot of fun.
Anyway I hope you are happy with whatever you get! I did talk to a guy over the weekend who has LG G3 and he told me he "hates it" although he couldn't really tell me why.. Haha I haven't played with one but they seem pretty comparable
By the way I thought I'd share that when I got home and started typing this my battery was at 56% (after a full day of pretty heavy use) and in the time it's taken me to type this up (on the phone via tapatalk) while plugged into the fast charger I'm up to 72%
Just thought I'd share an update, in case the op might be still deciding.
I opted for the Note 4. Got it in the mail yesterday, and so far I'm very impressed! It's not as hard to handle as I thought it'd be due to its size. I have yet to give the battery a good test, gotta break it in and actually do a near full run-down, since I had it plugged in most of the day yesterday. But this display is absolutely gorgeous! Don't think I'll be using the s-pen much, but who knows, maybe I'll find more use for it further down the road. I also enjoy using the finger print scanner; I find it quicker to unlock. At times it's frustrating that it doesn't work, but that's because I'm not being precise enough.
Thought I'd share my first impressions. Thanks for the input starscream!
Guess I should've come back to update this. I wound up getting the LG G3 a week ago. Already rooted and installed Skydragon ROM and love it. I also purchased the sticker for the battery door that changes it from NFC only to NFC plus wireless charging. Battery life has been great, and I like the knock knock option for turning on the screen. Transition from my DNA to the G3 has been easy.
Appreciate the suggestions and feedback from everyone!

Farewell fellow G3 users

It is with a sad and heavy heart that I must state that my G3 died tonight while I was using it. It just shut off unexpectedly while it was charging. This was the first time this has ever happened. I can get it to turn on briefly, and then it shuts off again but there are also times where it just doesn't respond.
If I remove the battery and plug it into the charger, usually the battery with a question mark would show up to state the battery was missing. It won't even do that. That to me signals it has finally died. I'm going to miss this phone. Funny how it died the month that my 2-year-contract was up.
I'm looking at probably the Moto-Z Play Droid. I used to like Motorola products. This one has expandable storage, which is great. Hate that it doesn't have a removable battery though. But, it will bring down my monthly fees by about $3. But it sucks because my bill would have dropped $20 a month since the G3 was off contract.
I want to thank everyone who helped me through the past two years with everything here. That is especially @bweN diorD and @roirraW "edor" ehT.
Farewell fellow G3 users! We might meet up again some day.
Sorry to hear about the catastrophic failure! Take care, good luck, and hope to see you around.
happened to me also but plugging the cable while holding up button after reinserting battery got me into download mode but there was nothing on the screen same like you. after that i flashed 10b tot and it is working again. you can give it a try.
That's horrible to hear, I have been reading your and the road warrior posts as I am new to the LG G3 and your are a helpful person!!
I got my G3 off a friend as it was hard to find a non K model on swappa. I came from the horribly locked down CID 11 GS5.
Thanks for the posts you left and the responses you gave me in my short time getting acquired!

My condolences on your loss
If you're going to sell it please let us know. If it's not repairable it can parted out
& Good luck with your new gear. Hopefully the dev community is strong for whatever you decide to get :good:
It was a hard decision between the Galaxy S7 and the Moto Z. Moto Z pulled me over because it was pretty close to pure stock Android. But four things pushed me the S7:
Moto Z has USB-C, so that means I have to get all new charging cables for the car, etc.
No headphone jack. Sorry, this is a biggie. Yes, the Moto Z comes with a USB-C adapter to use headphones, but nope. Plus, my car doesn't have Blue Tooth, so I need the headphone jack.
What was a selling point was a negative for me: the add-on. Expensive, limited to the Moto Z, and stuff I really didn't need. Plus, even though they promised it would work with later models, we all know how that goes.
One more was the camera. Comparisons between the S7 and the Moto Z were no contest. The S7 takes WAY better pictures.
Of course, when I got to the store, found out I got a free Samsung VR Gear from Oculus! Awesome! Didn't even know that would happen.
As for my G3, it's toast. It just won't start up at all, so it's definitely a hardware failure. I can't even get it into download mode to try and flash 10b back on it. So, the phone has died.
It was a fun two years that I was here. Learned a lot and will miss a lot of you, but many of you have also moved on as well.
I'll lurk around still and help those who are seeking assistance with their G3s.

Yeah, I tried this. It goes into DL mode but after 30 seconds, it shuts down before I can do anything, so there is definitely a hardware failure going on. I've reseated all the connectors on the motherboard and that didn't help.
The phone is toast. Loving my S7 though right now and the free Samsung Gear VR I got with it, along with the $10/month monthly payment with no trade-in option they had over over this past weekend. That came along at the right time!
Take care fellow G3 users. May your phone last longer than mine (about 2 years). I loved the G3 and what it offered. I was even happy with it on stock.
I won't be doing anything with my S7 either other than disable some bloat (which there really isn't that much on here like the G3 has). Looks like there is a Nougat beta going on, but I'm going to stay away from that after the nasty experience I had with the 49A OTA. Might be that it didn't cause my G3 to fail, but it sure was quite a coincidence!
Try a new battery. I had a battery go bad. It's a cheap fix.

Not sure it's the battery and I've already replaced the phone. I might take it into the battery store and see if they'll let me test it with a new battery before I purchase one. Would be interesting to see if it works or not. I did try to flash it back to 10g and it got interrupted in the middle of it, so it's probably in BULK mode and right now, I don't feel like taking it apart to expose the connectors to "short" it out. Did it once, but now that I have an S7, not sure if I want to mess with it right now. But, I'll hold onto it until I'm ready to try a new battery in it.
I had a problem with my phone 8 months back . I went on craigslist and bought another used. I was lucky it had not taken an update. I rooted it without having to go back and tot it. . even better I took the battery out and put it in my old one confirming the battery was bad. now I have a backup and another battery was less then 10 bucks. hope it's your battery. I don't recall the symptoms just it wouldn't boot up full.
My experience (2 phones - mine & wife's) was that a dying batter swells up and can cause collateral damage to the phone. This happened first on my phone after about 18 months; I could see a gap where the screen was pushed up away from the bezel. At the same time a 5mm or so strip at the top of the screen became unresponsive to touch. New batteries are (were?) only $15 from LG. That fixed the bulge problem, but the touch problem remained. I got a used phone off FleaBay (was in excellent condition) for a bit over $100. About 3-4 months later, my wife's phone started to show the same bulge in the screen. New battery solved the problem; fortunately no other damage. Her phone is a bit newer than mine, so the failure was at about the same point in the life. Admittedly we're hard on batteries because we routinely stick the phones on the wireless charging pad overnight, and they tend to stay warm.
My old phone has been relegated to Pandora player duty. I don't see any thing in a newer phone that I need, and few have wireless charging and/or replaceable batteries. I'll probably keep swapping in new batteries every 12-18 months and keep them going as long as possible.
I have been very happy with my G3 over the past two years. My GF and I each have one, so we are compatible for batteries and charging, etc.
I have recently been wanting something newer and different, but without a lot of justification.
I was looking at the G6 from Verizon, $480 on plan, which is nice. But, that would have forced me off my OG Unlimited plan, which would then cost me at least $20 more a month.
I decided to try the HTC U11, since it is bootloader unlockable and they swear that the Unlocked version also works on Verizon CDMA. F'n better work.
G6 might have better screen. U11 has better camera and 2x storage @ 64GB. Hope I don't miss swappable batteries.

I'm waiting until October for Pixel 2 most likely. It would be nice to have an unlocked phone that gets support from the manufacturer in a timely manner. Plus, no Alexa and possibly a headphone jack.
I'm actually pretty sold on Alexa. I have two Echo Dots and a ton of WeMo devices, thermostat, security, etc.
I wanted the Alexa integration, to be honest.
Just wanted to give an update. S7 is still going strong on Nougat with no issues. Battery life is good for me (except when I play games which is most of the time ) and performance is great. Definitely better than the G3, but I really had no issues with the G3 performance-wise, but I can tell a difference in response on certain apps/games.
Still miss the G3 and wish I could have made it work, but it has since been retired to the recycle bin. :crying:
Now in my family, my oldest daughter and my wife have S7s as well. My daughter was the first to get it. Then me. Then my wife. Our other daughter has an iPhone 7s. Tried to get her to switch to Android, but she does have a lot wrapped up in her phone as far as music, apps, etc. Plus, she as an Apple Notebook, so in many respects, it all works for her. I just hate when she has issues with it not backing up photos and such correctly. And same with her music and trying to get it off the phone. One of the major reasons why I never went to an iPhone after seeing all the issues my daughters had with their iPods so many years back. That pretty much told me to stay away if I can't easily backup up music and files from my phone.

Need hardware experts opinion - Issue with charging port causing rapid battery drain?

My one year old V10 has developed issues with the charging port. Won't fast-charge, won't connect to PC, but will slow charge. I've ruled out cables, charging bricks, and the battery itself as the issue as they were all fine the day before. I can deal with the loss of fast-charging on the phone by charging my spare OEM LG batteries in my LG charging cradle. The big problem that it has also started having the problem of rapid battery discharging. About 3-4 times faster than the day before the issue started. Was getting nearly a full day of use from fully charged battery, now just 4-5 hours. Checked battery usage stats and found nothing new or unusual. Has to be hardware related. Really don't want to toss out and replace the phone yet. Is there anything I can try to fix issue?

EDIT: One more issue to add to above - Battery draining to 0% while phone is completely POWERED OFF!

Well, with the info from your other post it sounds like a hardware issue. The V10 has a 1 year warranty. How precise are you when you say one year?
Heck, we don't condone fraud, but if if it's something they can deby and say that it's the battery, brick your phone and request a replacement. Just make sure you're still under warranty.

Unfortunately, about a month out of warranty. That's why I'm looking for a DIY solution. Very disappointing that I should have this issue on an expensive flagship phone from a major manufacturer.

Yikes. Yea, we also shouldn't have to deal with a boot loader that doesn't respond to half the commands.

Even more so disappointing since there is so much to like about this phone. I came to the V10 from a Galaxy S5 which was just the absolute champion of rugged durability and awesome hardware specs of it's day. Until now the V10 has impressed in every way I need as a stalwart daily driver, from the best camera in the business to the fantastic screen, killer audio, and one of the last flagships to sport a removable battery.
The hardware business has always been brutal for these manufacturers to turn a profit, but I think maybe what we are seeing now is a lot of cost-cutting, corner-cutting moves by the OEMs to save a few pennies at the expense of durability. I mean, I have 10 year old flip phones in a box in the garage that still power on and work for god sakes!!!

I know the feeling. I have had two nexus phones, both had such a disgustingly poor camers, and with the lack of ability to add an sd card, I switched to something that would be rugged, and have some great features. My first phone was the LG G2x. Another ground-breaking flagship. It was the first dual-core phone. Unfortunately the engineering was such that the developers couldn't get a fully functioning LP ROM. To make weird engineering worse, they had partnered with Nvidia to make it and uses a closed-source software component. They never released the source, of course, and there was a lot of finger pointing at that being most of the issue.
Tmobile replaced mine after my 1yr because of my FPS wasnt working. I just flashed a stock .kdz and locked my bootloader before hand.

battery degrade

atm it's great but I'm a little worried about my battery a few months from now. taking it apart to replace seems easy but getting a good battery itself doesn't especially since oem probably can't be ordered that easily. which type of batteries do people usually get? or do they just buy a brand new rn4 instead? the rn4 isn't that old yet so there shouldn't be many talking about how much theirs has gone bad unless they mistreated it by overheating in certain ways or went through too many charge cycles too quickly. I'm guessing the light users who don't charge once a day will have double the life span compared to heavy users
A normal phone battery can last you up to 1.5 year without any problem. If you want to replace the battery than either go to your local phone store and ask for a replacement or buy one online for 10 dollar or 599 rupee from any sites that look trustworthy.
And by the way nobody buy a new phone just because they old phone battery is dead.

from what I read it looks like people do buy a new phone for that as part of the reason after 2 years or more and recently some are saying their batteries went bad after only 1 year or sooner but that is probably their own fault or they got unlucky somehow. no local stores around my area I am in the US. if newer phones still don't look that interesting to me I don't mind getting this same one again. it doesn't hurt to plan ahead so I don't end up like one of those people who think xiaomi batteries are garbage only after a few months. also if I know how cheap and easy it is to replace then I might just use my phone more heavily even if it does end up killing it faster. there hasn't been many talking about any good replacement batteries yet though. I thought these are things everyone usually thinks about when buying non removable batteries. maybe not because it's easier to buy and forget about worries for the next 1-2 years since that is a long time
