Sony Xperia 1 - CPU Throttling Test - Sony Xperia 1 Questions & Answers

Hello!
Would someone be kind enough to run a CPU Throttling Test (using the app of same name) and post the results here?
A 15 minutes if you don't mind...
Thank you very much!

Oh my God! You left running for 1 hour?! That's crazy, yet perfect. I see almost 0 throttle on the CPU! Thank you so much!

Possible Stock Overclock? No but 1.6Ghz is now possible with ViperControl

we have been overclocked! I ran CF bench n noticed my very high score. then I looked at stats n saw that my top speed is now 1.6Ghz. I couldn't believe it. so I used my system panel app to check out info. It's true! Along with ICS those mofos overclocked us. look at my bench at the top speed of processor.
Edit: Although stock setting reads 1.6Ghz it is not really. Those speeds are deactivated. BUT with rooting and Viperzcontrol Mod, WE ARE NOW OFFICIALLY OVERCLOCKED TO MAX OF 1.6Ghz. Head to Dev. Section for the thread n details on it.
more proof I am now Overclocked to top speed of 1.6Ghz
Ill gladly go back if this is causing my display banding -.-

Awesome isn't even the word. damn! they really surprised us good with this one. I couldn't believe it. I'm so stoked right now. I bet most people don't even realize it yet. that's why I made this thread. this update and overcloxk made me forget all about that b.s. news earlier about new Asus models.
Wtf? I've never seen a manufacturer do this. Did they do this because they weren't confident enough that ICS would speed up the experience by itself?
So all this happened with the ICS upgrade? Did you do anything else to achieve this? I'm gonna have to to test mine out now!

Most likely a new kernel with the Ice Cream Sandwhich OTA Update.
.Everything running smoother including games.I tested Riptide(shocked at how fast it loaded) and Zen Pinball(had to readjust my timing because its smoother). Also,I put the Prime in "performance"mode.Thought it was a placebo effect but it really is a different beast now!
EDIT..I guess that would explain why games are running smoother...AWESOME!!
Well my quadrant score tanked. After 4 runs about 300 points lower on average. This could be a rendering engine change though, doesn't necessarily relate to performance.

I can confirm that I'm running at 1.6 too but my Benches on Antutu have dropped by a lot.
Very nice! That explains a lot... Thats good news to me, I just hope it doesn't eat battery.

I don't know. I'm in the same boat. I've never seen this before also. I'm completely stoked n loving it. Asus really trying to make up for the mishaps and its working very well.. you should hear my sinister laugh..lmfao

nope didn't do anything extra. I just noticed this after I ran CF Bench in Normal mode. I looked at specs n saw it. then used other apps tl confirm it also. This is SICK! Great Job Asus on the ICS update.
Oh yea, 1600MHz! Everything seems faster and it boots up a lot faster!
Same here. Antutu benchmark reports 1600MHz top speed as well.
Wow. I just hope this wasn't something left over from development that was supposed to be turned off...

My CF bench jumped up by like 1000 points overall. I have a feeling I can get even higher than 13,000 overall score. CF Bench is a really good one that takes into account stuff other benches don't. its a more thorough bench mark. I'm so happy..lol. I can't believe this. Asus kissed our a$$ on this nice surprise. now imagine once developers here start tinkering around. I can easily see us over 2Ghz overclock.
Sorry to burst bubbles here guys, but you're only half right. Upon opening CPU Spy, it shows that while 1.5 and 1.6ghz steppings exist, they are listed as "unused states". Thus, they exist in the kernel but are disabled. Its possible with setcpu you can simply turn it up to 1.5 or 1.6 with the current kernel and it may work that way but as of right now any extra speed is all ICS, they are NOT running at 1.5/1.6. Programs will report the kernel's 'listed' top speed (also why you'll always see 1.4 listed even if it's using all 4 cores limited to 1.3).
Still, looks promising. I'll have to play with setCPU later to see if we need to wait for kernels or not...

Good catch. I read this and went into SetCPU (no root forgot to keep it) and I check the time in each state thing. 0% in 1.5/1.6 Kinda gay

Yeah, think you may be right... don't have the Prime yet, but I pulled the following from the OTA Update dlpkgfile (cpu3.sh @ /system/etc):
#!/bin/sh -x

echo 0 > /sys/module/cpu_tegra/parameters/system_mode
echo 1300 > /sys/kernel/tegra_cap/core_cap_level
echo 0 > /sys/kernel/tegra_cap/core_cap_state
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/tegra_grhost/enable_3d_scaling
echo 10 > /sys/module/cpu_tegra3/parameters/mp_overhead
echo 9999999 > /sys/module/cpu_tegra/parameters/pwr_cap_limit_1
echo 9999999 > /sys/module/cpu_tegra/parameters/pwr_cap_limit_2
echo 9999999 > /sys/module/cpu_tegra/parameters/pwr_cap_limit_3
echo 9999999 > /sys/module/cpu_tegra/parameters/pwr_cap_limit_4

you almost rained on my parade BUT I just went back to my system panel app where it shows real time processor speed and I saw it spike to 1.5ghz. it shows me all 4 cores in real time and shows me the speeds as it fluctuates. So I'm thinking its already enabled if it spiked up that high.
edit: either way, this is all looking very promising. need more confirmation. does set CPU need root? Hol up, let me check my system tuner pro app
edit: all my apps showing 1.6Ghz Max. System Tuner Pro won't let me adjust the speed with slider. the Max still showing 1.6. another thing I noticed also is the lowest speed. it dips really low now. into the 100mhz or so.

[Q] system tuner/ Dual core

So I installed system tuner from playstore and I'm looking at both cpu's and I noticed CPU 0 is running 100% of the time and CPU 1 is offline 99% of the time? It's the way that all dual core phones work to save battery. When using the phone heavily, both should kick on. While not doing anything or not processor heavy, just one core would run.

Correct.
CPU1 is rarely ever used. This is to conserve battery. It gets turned on/used only when there is a demand for extra processing power.
But some custom ROM/kernel combo's will change it so that CPU1 is used 100% of the time. I'd guess you had a custom kernel on your Nexus?

Thank u guys, This is what I figured, but I've never had stock rom and kernel on any of my other dual core phones this is longest I've ever had stock rom and kernel (4 days ; p) and had no idea CPU 1 is never really used cause yes most kernels take advantage of both, I turned on CPU 1 with the app but I don't think its working right, phone seems faster but I need run some tests ....thanks agn

[Q] best ROM for best Batterylife+ other tips&tricks to do it more battery friendly?

[Q] best ROM for best Batterylife+ other tips&tricks to do it more battery friendly?
Hi!
I was wondering if someone can recommend the most battery friendly ROM out there for the moment for Xperia S?
I wonder since I have had both GB and ICS from Sony and I don't feel that they are that good as the Xperia Play was or are that smooth as users write that it is, it jsut feels like it's a hype about all that :/
And for the moment I got KA's latest ROM+kernel and it isn't good enough battery wise, and I'm now wondering, if someone can give me tips about the most battery friendly ROM out there for Xperia S or if Custom-ROM users can report their batterylife and with which ROM and Kernel+ if you use some other tweaks.
and more than ROM+kernel, feel free to give me other tips and tricks about saving batterylife.
For the moment I have turned the light down as much as I can, don't have any live wallpaper, turned ouf Data+everything else and it's still eating battery and the device battery life is the worst in my whole phone history, even my Nokia 3310 was doing better than this :/
Thanks in advance for answers.
Best regards RazerBlader and excuse me for my bad Enlgish, I tried my best.
decreasing CPU speed and LCD brightness !!!
hey bro...how are you...first i want to tell you that i had the same problem...upgrading to android 4 was terrible cuz i had just 300 mb ram free...on gingerbread i had 400-500mb free...
2) the performance of gb is much better than ics...so after trying some kernels...different roms...i just hold my way from changing roms e.t.c.
i decided to flash the ( KA10 speed rom+ics kernel) ..first you have to unlock your bootloader and root your device..
here comes the interesting part....download CPU tuner...free of charge!!!!
and set the min. frequence of your cpu to 192MHz and max 1GHz.......1GHz is totally enough...decrease the profiles you youse....like the screen off ...set it to just 192MHz single core!!!!
BTW all settings are with just one core running.
after testing these setting i got this result:
2 days 19 hours 52 min 34 sec with Battery...still 30%::::
Display was 1 hour and 23 min on with a brightness of 25% ...totally enough...at night when chatting on whats app...brightness 0% and everything is clear.
music player 2 hours
calling 37 min.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
so with stock ICS without changing anything..and without a cpu tuner:
13 hours 18 min 3 s with battery
i got
display 25 % just 39 min on
music 20 min
and calling 17 min
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
in few words...if you don't use your phone much ...these setting are very helpful for you....or you can decrease it a bit more...
and if you need speed you can boost it up with a click.
with 192 MHz singlecore...you get perfect sound with music player screen off and its fluent and smooth playing...
IN fact:
less speed---more battery life--not so smooth --but ok
more speed ----less battery life---soo smooth like baby oil..hehe...and Nitro .
_________________________________________________________________________________________
use the speed of xperia s on demand....i mean just when you need it.
i hope i helped you out

Oh, tanks a bunch, it really helped me a lot since I didn't even thought about this, and I will use CPU tuner without eving consider not to and it was the best advice i have eard in a real long time, and i can leave with the none-smoothness and I bet it will perform even better with that app on JB when CM10 is more stable so I definitely gonna go with your advice and thanks once again, I really appreciate it a real lot!
And you really did helped me out since i bet this is all it needs since the hardware is very battery hungry and don't that battery friendly at all as you wrote
Only time I bet that we gonna use it is when we can hook the phone up as a computer with the Linux-project that is going on, other than that, I don't feel that I have the need of this power more than in games when playing, and when it comes to get the better resolution and smoothness through HDMI to the TV, especially with the XBMC-app running
Thanks once again a bunch!
another advice
hey bro again...
sorry for the double post...but i have no permission to change my own post...anyway..
I just wanted to give you another hint for even more battery life..
a few minutes ago...i read the new Speed Kernel v3.1
it has VOLTAGE CONTROL....you can control the voltage "the energy that your battery "eats","uses" control.
doom kernel also has this feature in his own kernel..but believe me you will have just failure and errors with doom lords kernel.
i respect his work..but i just want to help you ..from my own experience.
so speed kernel has a flash able and also a fastboot file...but a advice you to use the flash method.
dont forget.....use it at your own risk.

[Poll] CPU throttle because of overheat!

At first: sorry for just using Google Translate... I have not much time to write everything new!
Problem:
After some time, the ongoing CPU / GPU load overclocked the processor down and the maximum stroke is limited to 820MHz. Under Android 2.3 that was detected with the tool Stability Test, which but now with Android 4.0 makes the Xperia S problems and freezes the display after 2min.
clearly evident in the following games / applications:
- Asphalt 7: Heat - after 10 to 15 minutes
- Mass Effect - Infiltrator - after 10 to 15 minutes
- Shadow Gun - after 10 to 15 minutes
- N64 Emulator (FREE) on TV over HDMI HDMI after about 20 or 25 minutes
- Dungeon Hunter 3 (FREE) - on charger during the third mission
- Real Football (FREE) - after 20 or 30 minutes... Keep the half-time Screen on for 15 minutes should bring the effect faster
- Temple Run Brave - thx @ monivan
Should you it with other games or the best tools that can follow the show cpu speed permanently, please post here. the above StabilityTest works definitely NOT currently until an update from the developer Comes
Here a short example Video in german... if you move Forward to 3:20 you will see the effect clearly after 3:30
ATTENTION! Please only Xperia S users participate in the survey, as the results will be forwarded to the developer and not with "I certainly do not" click just because you did not want to test this.
Original German thread (hope that is not against the rules): http://www.pocketpc.ch/sony-xperia-s/169205-prozessordrosselung-wegen-uberhitzung-umfrage.html

there is a solution from Bin4ry but it is a bit dangerous and we don't know if it has hardware-side-effects over a Long time...
I attached you a file... it is a config where the thermal throttling Trigger values are located at... it just sets the throttle value from 55 degrees to 70 degrees (CPU data sheet says Maximum temp is 80 degrees so it's inside his Limit) and the emergency shutdown from 70 degrees to 75 degrees....
there is also another emergency shutdown value for battery temp at 60 degrees because at more then 70 the battery may explode so: DON'T touch this values!!!
just unzip it and overwrite the existing one in /System/etc/
then reboot...
after that it will not throttle again but if you are charging and playing for a while (after 45 or 60 minutes) the phone get's damned hot!!!
so Bin4ry and I think, that the Xperia S has a massively failed Hardware design with this old CPU and bad heat Management!!!
EDIT: hmm who is the one without any Problems? a Statement what was tested would be nice you are the first one (out of 15 People voted in both Forums together) who has no problems
I'm on stock rom. Yesterday I played Virtua Tennis for 3 hours, and last night played Virtua Tennis with a friend, phone slightly heated, but not over heated also never had any problem !!! but my Arc is over heating
hmm ok but you should try with games listed above... the Problem is, that other games could have limited fps to save Hardware power... that's the reason why i listed These games
Maybe the best solution is to underclock the phone to 1-1,2 Ghz, so that it won't get this hot when playing games... I think a custom kernel is necessary for that but my BL is locked.... Is there anybody who can try this out and report?
lol...
i payed 600 EUROS for a phone with 1,5GHz dualcore CPU! i will NOT underclock it to make it run more stable
the best solution is to proove that the Xperia S has a Hardware issue that can't be fixed and forece sony to bring you an Exchange device with the same Price value like you have paid or you get your money back...

no this is a HARDWARE Problem... so there are two possibilities... the device clocks down much tooo early and games start to lag (like on stock FW) or it throttles just at higher temps (some custom roms with other throttle values) but then the Xperia becomes extremely hot!

I was planning to get XS, playing games is my priority, but when i read this thread im having second thoughts now

If you want gaming go for a tegra handset like HTC one X I think it's the best deal

Same here, after playing like 30 min NFSMW my XS is extremendly hot and lag (Lag in game and sometime after close this)
Games with lag:
Gta 3 full settings (30~ 40 min)
NFSMW (30 ~ 40)
N64oid (30-40)
100floor (Jesus IS A 2D game)
Im on full stock .55
I think we need to talk with sony about the minimun speed after overheating from 820 mhz to 1ghz
PS: mods, can you move to xs forum plz?

It's normal. All those games are pretty intense for the novathor and cause pretty much any phones I know of to heat up.
Cpu governer will not make a difference unless you have selected the performance gov. This locks the frequency to 1000 ghz and makes it overheat.
Take your cover off the phone.
According to me use noop , smartassv2
