Preparing phone for sale. Stock Miui / Lock Bootloader - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 / 5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hey guys, as much as I love my 5 plus, there's a chance in the near future I may be jumping over to the MI 9 Lite. Although I don't know if I'll get a lot of money out of this older phone, I am still interested in selling it.
It seems to be my understanding that if I plan on selling the phone, it would be best to revert it to stock Miui and, more importantly, relocking the bootloader to avoid the new user from having any issues unlocking/relocking if I am not mistaken. Although I think I have a general idea on how this would all work using miflash, I am not 100% sure on the process and would really not like to hard brick my phone. I am currently running the most recent havok rom and have orange fox recovery installed. I'm hoping maybe someone could explain or point me in the right direction on getting this done correctly. Thank you!

i also have the same plan too..
once i remember flashing using mi flash and if i'am not mistaken there is an option to re-lock the bootloader as well

I just got done doing it. It's pretty easy.

Pretty much followed that for getting the fastboot file.
If you do this, keep in mind the first boot-up after the initial flash will take a few minutes or more to load.

Whoa way over my head!! TP Verizon Rom!

OK i have done some searching and this sounds like a good one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461524
Then i want to make shure i can get it back to the original rom i have right now so in case it breaks. this it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427507&highlight=dump
Then do you guys know if in this rom it already has gps unlocked or do i have to do the bored thing? http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49933
Then this is my first time doing this. is there anything else i am missing?
First, have you unlocked your phone? This is a must!!
Second, you do have to follow the steps from bored to unlock the GPS.
Third, check out bored's ROMs and kitchens on this forum. Updated today!!
Also, you can revert back to the original ROM and re-lock your phone if neccasary. So no worries. Also, for better signal strength you can also try a new radio (sticky on ppcgeeks). May not help but if you have weak service now, these could give you more bars and extend your battery life.
OH, and if your still on the stock ROM....WOW. You are about to LOVE your phone!! Its like a different phone with a custom ROM, SOOOO much faster

I am not too familiar with XDA myself but PPCGeeks I would say is a better resource for your Verizon TP. I will post a few links that answer every one of your questions but you'll have to do a little reading yourself......
Unlocking and Relocking for Warranty Repair

lllbored GPS Fix (very easy to do and includes the cab to revert if necessary)
Thread About RELOCKING for Warranty
In my Opinion these are all very easy things to accomplish as long as you made sure you READ the instructions throughly before attempting. Good Luck!
If i have a data connection will that get charged like double when i reastivate my phone? and were and how would i get my rom back to stock?

Stock CDMA ROMS
Not sure why you would think your Data plan would double???? I havent had any issues with my data plan changing except when buying a new device and they "assume" you want the Enterprise plan. As long as you made sure Verizon set you up on the $29.99 plan in the first place then it shouldnt change to my knowledge....... DONT CALL VERIZON AND TELL THEM THAT YOU UNLOCKED/FLASHED YOUR PHONE , lol.
Your data plan will be fine. Just dont do a lot of tethering if your plan isnt unlimited. Data usage will be the same as before though

Little history about that , bout 6 months ago I was helping someone in the CrackBerry forums flash a leaked beta on their Curve , they got confused , called Verizon for help flashing and of course were told that they had Violated customer agreements and the device warranty and how they were going to burn in hell for sinning against Verizon. This person then comes back to the forums furious at everybody that had been trying to help because WE had "voided" their warranty. Just wanted to make sure you werent going to do the same and be mad at me
That ROM is the leaked SHIP Rom that comes on the Verizon TP. Double check your Settings/System/Device Information if your not sure. Like I said in the post I linked above ,I have unlocked , flashed (MANY TIMES) and relocked and flashed the Verizon leaked rom so I could send it back and had NO issues whatsoever.
EDIT : Flashing a new rom is just as easy as unlocking was. Which ROM have you chosen for your first one??

all right and then when i am unlocking you get the screen on your computer with a picture of the touch pro and it has you accept the agreements. i have not done this yet but what does that do because it does not seem like that is the unlocker.
Damn this seems harder then putting custom firmware on a psp wich i did with ease.

3.then in the newly created RUU directory add the rom of your choice - (copy the RUU_Signed.nbh to desktop\RUU)
4.Place phone in bootloader mode (power button while holding volume down button)
5.open the ROMUpdateUtility.exe
6.follow the RUU on screen instructions from there
Oh and i just for fun did the power and down volume key and i went to the 3 color thing and it says security unlocked and i dont think i unlocked it yet......

That is dependant on which ROM you choose......... which rom did you choose?
Most roms are alot easier than that now.
EDIT** If it says .35 cmonex in bootloader then it IS unlocked. Nothing against XDA but for your CDMA Touch Pro you reallly need to be over at PPCGeeks for this. That Crossler post you linked to hasnt been updated for 3 months now. Crosslers Kitchen on PPCGeeks was updated yesterday , just a thought

[Q] Atrix: Bootloader unlocked? What can I do with that?

So I've had my Atrix for a few months now, and it's mostly awesome. I'm coming from having owned an iPhone before, and it's just fantastic. I've stayed away from modding it too much however, since I knew the bootloader was locked and not a lot could really be done. But, according to several posts I see here, the bootloader seems to have been unlocked recently. Yay?
So, I ask that you forgive my ignorance. What does this mean? Does a given ROM need to be modified to work with every model of phone? If so, which ones presently work with the Atrix? Any? (It looks like the unlock was found very recently.) How does that process work exactly? Is there any way to ensure a recovery path if something were to go wrong, so that I don't brick my phone?
I'm just curious here. Presently, my phone is on the stock firmware without any upgrades at all, and I've simply rooted it and installed the webtop mod so I could play games on my TV. Other than that, it's been lots of Android Market for me. I'd like to branch out, and I don't even know where to begin.
There aren't any custom rom's for this yet, there's work being done, so it's just a matter of time. However, there is a developer build from Asia that can be flashed. There are a few issues with it, so if you are averse to troubleshooting or dealing with issues then just wait a few days.
One of the good things you can do right now though is to Unlock it, and then install the Clockwork Mod recovery port in the developer's section. You can use that to make full system backup that you can flash.
Can I flash the UK Firmware on a unlocked ATT Atrix now?
Pretty sure you can at least fastboot flash the CG from the SBF (need system and boot) not sure about flashing the whole SBF. You can try though.

_Dennis_ is right. You should sbf_flash -x to extract the UK firmware and use fastboot to flash just boot.img (CG56 in Froyo) and system.img (CG57 in Froyo). If you want to flash the radio, use a custom .sbf (for AT&T) with only the radio. We don't yet know whether you can replace your bootloader with a UK bootloader. We still flashed a signed bootloader to our phone. In the worst case, if you flash a UK signed bootloader and your boot ROM is looking to find an AT&T signature in your bootloader: BAD! It is fairly unclear that the unlock ALSO tells boot ROM not to care about signatures, it may very well still care. And the order of RSD: erase, write, verify is a little dangerous...
I as well, don't know much about this... but as far as I know, this will mean that developers will be able to create real operating systems for the phone and not have to wait for att/moto to do that...
in the past it was an OS from att/moto, and all the "roms" in xda were actually the same OS but with some skins and mods added to them...
Yes, if you look at the development forums for just about any other android phone, you will see full customized ROMs that can be installed. That's where we are headed.

I did a test with this.
I flashed 1.8.3 SBF over my unlocked bootloader to see if I could use moto-fastboot to flash over a 'stock' bootloader. It works to flash system (since it is still technically unlocked) but fails to flash boot.
So DO NOT TRY TO SBF FLASH A INTERNATIONAL VERSION unless you want to be stuck on the version with no way to get your phone back off.
I also would not flash the boot.img of a international version for the same reason.

I just finished unlocking and installed the new CWM recovery, just waiting for some roms! About the full system backup with CWM, does is deposit a folder to the SD card I can remove for safe keeping like TIBu? I never used CWM to backup or restore.

I think that the backup will be found in a Clockwork folder on your sd card. I also think that when you do the backup you will get to choose the destination. Either sd or external sd.
I haven't used the bl unlock or the new ClockworkMod (Just waiting on a nice rom). But that is how it went for me on the previous CWM that didn't require the unlocked bootloader.
Maybe someone who has this newer stuff can shed a little more light on it.

Does this essentially create an image of your device? Or does it just back up the firmware?
When CWM backs up ur files it creates a image file of
Boot.img
Cache.img
Data.img
recovery.img
system.img
so yes it does use a image.
Y'all talking about custom ROM's and such, no one seems to care about overcloking.. no one seems to realize what a beast a 1.4ghz Atrix would be.

+1.
ROMs will sometimes require you to have the custom kernel associated with them. CM7 for the Captivate comes to mind. With custom kernels, the Captivate was a beast. We had the VooDoo lagfix, which actually made the device usable on bootup. We were able to convert all partitions to ext4, and kind-of make the GPS work.
Overclocking is a possibility too. There's so much that is able to be done. It's a bit difficult coming from an iPhone where customization was limited, even with jailbreaking. But you'll soon get the hang of it.
GPS. Nice point too, but Moto itself promisses improvements on the 2.3.4 OTA. This is the most sorely needed fix for me, since my gps SUCKS. It can take anywhere up to 30 minutos to find my locations. Yes, you read that right.

It shouldn't take that long to lock on. Mine locks on instantly.

So I need help deciding on a rom/other questions

So for the longest time I had a jailbroken iphone so everything I'm used to is about iOS. I've had my Atrix for about 4 months now and I've been fairly happy with gingerblur, but I heard there was some new updates or other things going on. I dunno if I want an unlocked bootloader, I seriously dont know what to do because I want to start over and just start from scratch.
Suggestions or do I need to provide info? I just want to update my phone
what features do you use currently?
what new features do you want?
To be honest I dunno what features I use
I just want to be able to download apps and not worry about them being locked or not from a "trustworthy" source.
I dont know what's different between gingerblur and stock
I have had the atrix for a while now and right after i got it i rooted and installed gingerblur and was happy with that but being curious i just recently did the update unlocked the BL rooted and am now running the alien rom and am very happy with it. Updating is rarely a bad thing. just takes time Hope this helps

One bump before I head out for the evening
ok i used a couple different places but ill try to explain
first of all i had titanium backup to restore most of my apps and everything because you will lose everything. just a heads up.
1. I used this to rsd flash the "Full 2.3.4 sbf..."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
2. I then put the phone in fastboot and used this from #13 on
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
3. so now you are on 2.3.4. unlocked you can stay on just that if you want a stock rom. but i recommend rooting haha..
4. I could not get the root from #1 to work so i sorta worked my way around it.
5. I used this to get cwm recovery on my phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
6. then I flashed this file to obtain root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140110
7. Then flashed the alien rom from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537
8. thats it i hope you can make sense of it since its kinda screwed up lol but everything is working great for me and im defiantly glad i updated. if you have any questions just ask
also if you do do this make sure you check for updates under development for the rom its already updated a few things in the week that ive had it.
Ok I lied I found what I want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537
I want that on my phone. Now my question is does this come with an "Unlocked bootloader"
Or do I have to do something to get an unlocked bootloader?
What does an unlocked bootloader even mean
what i posted will get you that exactly.
What you have right now is a locked bootloader, rooted with gingerblur from what i understand. with a locked bootloader you cannot have a true rom gingerblur is more of a theme that gets rid of the apps that slow your phone from the factory.
with an unlocked bootloader you can flash true roms and kernels etc..
Do people even try looking...

I'm just guessing this is a case of autocorrect, and you mean "custom ROM" and not "art room"?
How did the custom ROM get on your phone, did you buy it that way or did someone do it for you?
The update won't install with a custom ROM, its true (at least if any system files have been altered, which is usually the case). Also, it won't install with a custom recovery. Might even send you into a bootloop and render the phone unusable.
If you want to return to a stock condition and get the update, you can either read up and learn, or run the RUU to return to stock (bootloader must be locked or you need S-off). In either case, we can help you, but need specifics on how you want to approach it.

oh the lousy autocorrect got me.
I have no idea what im doing lol, im following a tut to install revolution hd rom and so far everything is working perfect lets see what happens after system reboot.
Can I unroot and relock bootloader after custom rom install done ?
Update: restoring old content phone seems faster with better signal, but before custom rom it had 4g signal now seems only 3g
Now that sucks boomsound enable/disbale in settings is gone!
So is extreme power saving gone from status bar
also 4g signal
Signal will not show 4g or 4glte like AT&T [email protected] [email protected]
You could relock and unroot, but then no reason to flash a custom rom.
Those two settings are in settings. And on the m8 443 euro builds some are reporting lesser [email protected]
There are AT&T ROM's available that are tailored to us AT&T/GSM networks

This is the exact reason I highly discourage following step-by-step tutorials; and/or using toolkits. You are modding the phone with apparently very little understanding of what you are actually doing. Not only is this very risky, as it might result in damage to you phone. But it also leaves you completely unequipped to handle any problems.
My suggestion is to spend a few hours reading the basic information that the folks here have taken the time to compile. This isn't "techie" stuff, this is the basic information and concepts that should be understood before doing any modding of the phone. Quite simply IMO if you don't understand the basics, you have no business rooting/modding the phone.

Again, you need to learn and research more before doing anything. This is another perfect example. Factory reset doesn't do anything to the ROM. All it does is wipe the user data partition, and isn't going to help your case in any way. And trying to make up your own solutions is not a good idea (but at least you thought to ask before trying it).
If the intent is to simply be on the latest 2.23 stock software, just run the RUU. You will need to relock the bootloader before RUU if you are s-on. Also, back up any personal data, as user data will be wiped by RUU.

Not enough info. What exactly does the error say?
S-on or S-off. Did you relock the bootloader?
Any response if you type (using adb):
adb devices
Improper HTC/ADB drivers or using Microsoft USB 3.0 drivers on USB 3 port on Windows 8.x instead of Intel USB drivers would be my first two guess. The ladder of the two issues would be most likely scenario if RUU communicates with device while booted into Android OS but fails to connect when the device is in fastboot/boot loader mode.

Need ROM advice/clarification (Back to XDA, after 5 years, somethings have changed).

Hi all,
Feels good to be back.
let's cut to the chase, Im looking for a new Custom ROM for my RN3 Kate Device(as I always used MIUI Stable ROMs, currently MIUI10); I kept looking at all those ROMs/versions ( and some kernels ) and it's stupidly overwhelming, I can't even count them anymore; dont get me wrong tho, its a good thing.
Since Q3 2018 I've been using my RN3 Kate mostly for gaming, but also, browsing / Mail / Youtube. My RN3 It's no longer my daily driver.
So, I should be looking at performance/gaming ROMs (/Kernels), not customization centered ROMs, right ? The problem is, how can I distinguish between them ?
I mean, back in day almost every ROM/Kernel had, like, 7 or 8 lines explaining what the project was all about, not only that but also "101" Screenshots, performance numbers, all that jazz; Im not seeing that anymore, not for the most part, that is.
Other thing that grinds my gears, is the bootloader, in most threads it says that I need to unlock in MM (MIUI Dev ROM), I have already unlocked my RN3 in the same month I got it or something like that; The official unlocking way. Up to this very day (MM MIUI10 Global Stable), in the phone, it still says that is unlocked.
Even if I flash that latest Dev ROM, how can I unlock it again, how is that possible ? how does that even work ?
I would like to have some knowledge members to help me out on this, to give me some advices, if possible, It would be much appreciated.

If u r flashing miui fastboot rom using PC then u need to select "Clean all" option.
If u select "clean all and lock" option then ur bootloader will get relocked. So select clean all.
If your bootloader status is unlocked then good.
To check bootloader status using fastboot command.
fasboot oem device-info
If unlock= true then ur phone is jail free.
u can install latest twrp 3.2.3 img and flash custom roms.

Hi, thx for your help !
Views run fast, replies, not so much.
I see, so we no longer need to use 3th party software, thats nice…
its sure better than Sony's lack of support back in the day…
I did it, Lattest Dev ROM "kate_global_images_9.1.10_20190110.0000.00_6.0_global_a354395fdc" got flashed, and I still get the same result, its unlocked, like it should be.
Im pretty sure that Im missing some intel here, but its ok.

Based on my description, can you provide any ROM/Kernel recommendations ?

I just did, like 15 seconds ago.
Version 3.2.3-0
In this version Im no longer able to root; Im pretty sure I was running some moded version with SuperSU.
For those new custom ROMs the rooting method should be diferent anyway...

I see,
AEX 9.0, I like it, the gaming performance its also good, a bit better than MIUI10; nothing major, but still noticible. I cant notice any change in batery department, but it's holding up nicely (so far), I guess.
There's a major issue, Magisk (v18) was a "no go".
Some people are reporting a Error on flashing, in my case, I did NOT got any error, but it seems that it doesnt work anyway. Is there a workaround to this ?
Or maybe you could tell me any other ROM, root capable. Im willing to try it.
2014... 2019, Root its still not trivial, I guess some things doesn't change.
Edit: Nevermind, after some diging I found some people saying to keep flashing until the app show up. It doesnt make any sense, but it does work, after flashing the third time the app is now showing up. Rooted successfully.
Thx for your help, really appreciated.

U dont need to flash 3 times.
Magisk takes time to appear in first reboot. Its a bug . if it does not appear even after 5 min. Then restart phone. It will appear next reboot. I did it and it shows up in next reboot.

I understand, although, I can confirm this was not the case.
To be more precise, the phone was actually rebooted twice, before those re-flashes. The app was nowhere to be seen.
Some people are getting a error when flashing (maybe due to older versions), there's probably something wrong on their end too, in some way;
thanks for looking into that and finding that bug, I'm pretty sure other people will see this thread, just like I saw others.
