Rooting Asus Zenfone 4 Z01KD/ZE554KL 7.1.1 - Unlocked, TWRP installed, can't root?

Hey I just picked up this phone and decided I would like to maximize it to its fullest potential, and root it as I have done with previous phones. This ones giving me a hard time, and I just can't seem to find the proper info for it.
I have unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP 3.1.1 and want to gain root access. I have followed several guides, used every possible one-click unsuccessfully, and tried installing SuperSU with TWRP. After I reboot, SuperSU is installed. I'll open it up and it tells me the binaries are occupied. I've tried downgrading and updating the binaries but I get errors. (I believe this is because it must be rooted first - of course.)
So I'm stuck unable to get any further. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Is this phone with this configuration unrootable? There must be a way if I have recovery right?
Asus Zenfone 4 Z01KD/ZE554KL
Android Nougat 7.1.1 - 14.1060.1708.63 (NOT 1708.70)
TWRP 3.1.1 installed
One thing I have not tried is using Magisk. When I try it, it stops because I already patched with SuperSU (even though it failed). I never backed up before I did it with SuperSU I really thought it would work.
I read of people doing it with Magisk after updating to Oreo. I want to give that a try but I can't OTA or flash from TWRP. All attempts result in error 7.
I can't find a stock recovery to flash to do the update either. Is there a way to undo this, OTA and repatch with Magisk? Even if I don't bother updating, I would like to find a stock image to flash so I can try patching with Magisk.
Stock rom recovery.img anywhere? Am I alone?
i dont own this device but i read this and it might apply to you. also did you flash the supersu uninstaller and them try magisk?

H960A - Nougat unroot

Hi, i just rooted my device and later I realized that with root I can't use some apps.
Is there a way to unroot without wiping everything?
Does anyone have a boot.img for the H960A?

Root lost without reboot

I have a Xiaomi Mi 9T (MIUI Global 10.3.9) rooted with Magisk 19.3.
Two days ago, when I woke up and turned on the phone, it no longer had root. I only flashed magisk again.
Yesterday it happened again, but without any reboot, and I found a file in my Downloads folder called "log_antiroot.txt".
Is it possible that something is removing my root?
If so, how can I detect it and remove it?
Magisk 19.3

Help with rooted device.

This is my first time rooting a device. I am going to root my device soon (Poco X2) and need some help regarding updates. I plan on using miui even after rooting and won't be installing any custom roms. My question is how would i update the device. Do I have to flash a new rom and erase all data or would I be able to update over the current version? I am going to use TWRP recovery.

If your talking about OTA updates then you can't be rooted as they can be disabled by the system. Your best option would be to install a custom OS. When you install a new OS you'll need to wipe your data but if your in the same rom and are reflashing it you don't need to wipe data. That's called dirty flashing

Don't worry about wiping /cache during the format as doing a factory data reset takes care of that
You can update your ROM version using TWRP without automatically using OTA from the settings.

Yes but taking an OTA and having AVB enabled causes a soft brick. That or a hard brick that's why I always say avoid an OTA.

Rooting phone's Android is neither an update nor an upgrade: Rooting a phone's Android means giving user and/or applications administrative rights - superuser access, will say unrestricted access to Android's system files. The related executable is su binary. It's comparable to turn off UAC in Windows 10. Note: Rooting a phone's Android doesn't necessarily require to have su binary present on phone or even phone's boot-loader unlocked: you always can temporarily root any Android, what doesn't need Android's system files get touched.
AFAIK Xiaomi Poco X2 runs Android 10 ( MIUI 11 ). Chances to brick that phone by installing TWRP are extremely high.
Rooting phone's Android doesn't require TWRP or any other Custom Recovery gets installed beforehand.
