We can't make it work by "patching it". The fact that the app doesn't work anymore is controlled server side AFAIK.
But maybe you can find an alternative YT player that's compatible with Gingerbread. Your post took me back man, I didn't know you could still use GB in 2020. Is it your daily driver ?

Yes it really is my daily driver
Is there any alternative players that I can log in to my account?
I will install CM11 soon though.

If you want to use modern apps, you need to get a newer device. Even if you could update your device to a newer android version, your hardware is too old for most modern apps and services, your device would really be too slow to effectively use most modern apps. It is time for you to upgrade to some kind of device that has at least android 5 or 6 installed on it. Your device is so old and so far behind that I'm surprised it even works with anything available today. I still have my older devices but most of them can no longer effectively use apps from today.

Ehhh, it depends on the person, I made do with a galaxy ace gt-s5830 in 2018, a single core 800mhz phone with more ram than storage "256mb to be exact" but even with a pretty bloated install of 4.4.2 it was fine, loading was slow but when it got going it was perfectly cromulent for surfing the net and light gaming, I'd say a galaxy s gt-i9000 with omni 5.1.1 is the oldest you can go with gapps and decent app support, its slow but it works without too much struggle

An older device like that using ROMs from 2018 isn't comparison to older devices like that using ROMs from today. You actually made my point for me, though. I said older devices using newer ROMs are too slow to "effectively" use newer ROMs, which, is true. They "work" but they are very slow, too slow for anyone except someone who can't afford a better device or someone that chooses to make do with less.

[Q] Thinking of flashing a ROM, not sure which to use

I've got a US Galaxy Player 5.0, and it's my daily driver. I mostly use it as a PDA (got it to replace a really aging Palm...), but love playing games on it, using it as a camera, and browsing the web as well. I saw a Nexus 7 today, and realized I want a performance upgrade for my Player, but I don't know what ROMs are in what state. I know some have certain bugs, others don't, and I want to make an informed decision based on what other people have tried.
I think I want to try something like a stock 4.0/4.1, but I could be open to customized versions as well.
I've looked a bit at EtheralRom 2.4, but being a noob I can't post there to ask questions. I know I've seen some other ROM's in previous visits to the site, and I've always started my search with the All-In-One thread.
Absolute must-haves:
-Working Cameras
-Working GPS
-Working Bluetooth/Wifi
Don't care so much about:
-Audio quality/supported formats
I am also using my Player to debug an Android App I have on Play, so if there's anything I should know about that connection I'd appreciate it.
If you absolutely need the camera then no ICS for you, it is currently work in progress.

If the cameras is a must-have, then the ICS roms isn't for you. Also etheral is a rom for the SGP 4.0 and not the 5.0. As for ADB, (debugging) it is working normally.
Ok, good to know. Are there any ideas on when cameras might get integrated into the ICS builds?
If I give up on ICS, what gingerbread ROM would give the most noticeable performance boost?
Chip 1.5 rom

I don't have any idea of when this could be integrated (it involves quite a long programming port). As for the roms, I don't know as I don't own a 5.0 but people says that chip is one of the best GB roms available for the moment.
Chip Rom ..ADW launcher Ex and its flying try screens and menus faster then GS3..on mine international is perfect but read that on US could have few bugs ..maybe one with US could tell you.

Should I buy a Galaxy Player?

I am looking for a device mainly as a VOIP device. I can get a Galaxy samsung S for around 70-100 around here average from craigslist but was also considering a player 4.0 or 5.0 - problem is the 4.0s go for a little bit more (right now I have a guy willing sell me his mint one for $85). However, I've seen the 5.0 for around 120-150 refurbished or like new used and really like 5" screen. What would you guys do?

No one?!
Do you also want to use it in long trips or for GPS? If then the extra battery capacity from the galaxy player 5 suits the needs. Because honestly all of the following works perfectly well for a VOIP. Also if you are looking for development support from XDA you might consider the galaxy s. I would personally get the galaxy s because of the better custom roms and the capability of using a backup battery, which a player 5 cannot do

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is based on the Galaxy S1 so I'd go with the S1 because there are way more devs for it. Spec vs Spec the only thing in favor of the GP 4.0 is that it has duel stereo speakers and that's about it lol. The S1 has a much better screen and better camera. Now the 5.0 is a little different. It has of course the Screen Size, LED Flash, and a much bigger battery. Also it has a bit more devs, however it's screen is actually worse than the 4.0's and it uses a Yamaha DAC so it's sound quality isn't as nice as the GP4.0/S1 (whom use the same DAC). So like I said go for the S1 and be careful shopping on craiglist.
5.0 is worth it with reservations - old rom and no updates

hi
I've already bought a 5.0 from new and overall I'm reasonably impressed. It's a good vivid player with all the flexibility of Android to boot and a microSD card slot!.
I decided to purchase a separate music device rather than run my phone that way to avoid running my battery down...
However I would warn you that for the UK version that I bought, it seems to be stuck running Android 2.2.2 with no sign of an update any time this century. It's starting to be restrictive with regards to apps. Furthermore although some will tell you "just root it and update the rom"...I've yet to see a simple (for a noob) rooting process and set of roots that would at least match the stability of the stock version for the 5.0/4.0.
I've searched the fora and there's a lot of info to digest....
Did you try superoneclick?

Just some food for thought. I noticed that the Galaxy Player line is no longer available to buy, brand new, from Amazon (only third party sellers) and that Best Buy shows any of the players as "not available for shipping". I was curious what was going on and begin to find that it is possible the Galaxy Player line is being entirely discontinued. I hated to hear this, but think it is important to keep in mind as Dev support could become continuously smaller - it isn't large by any means at the moment.
If you are okay with the possibility of no support outside of forums, I would say to go for it. They are great devices as media players and even a type of 'wifi only' phone. Good luck with your decision!

Good choice you should be careful buying a used galaxy though. They are notorious for the power button breaking. There's a workaround however by installing an app where you can turn it on with a volume button.

They are still available on Amazon UK:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...alaxy+player&rh=i:aps,k:samsung+galaxy+player
I looked up kies mini and it seems they are device specific, I've installed kies regular and it says I'm on the latest firmware already.
I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

uninstall Kies regular and try Kies mini. mini upgrades basically all the galaxy s products so it's safe to assume that it would work on the gp. plus it was mentioned by Samsung themselves in order to upgrade the galaxy players.
gingerbread is not exactly a huge improvement in terms of performance, but it gets way better app compatibility. for example you don't need to root your gp if you want to use the power button alternative if the button ever breaks. and it's a more appealing to the buyer's eyes.
um... that's all the differences I know of

I ended up getting a mint Droid X for $45 after flashing ICS I was really satisfied with it as it seemed just as fast as my old G2x (that I killed trying to fix - so many probs and bad battery life)... however while battery life was decent 6 hours screen time, I decided to try a GB rom and its at 49% after 10 hours of almost continuous usage.... the phone, while not as powerful as the latest dual cores or even the galaxy S is very smooth and fits my needs... highly recommend anyone who is in my shoes to check out used phones to use as a VOIP cuz there's really good devices/deals out there!

If you want stable look for custom roms that are based off of stock, like Chip v1.5. These ones provide mostly, if not, all the features that are available for the default rom and provide extra features. Check this out for more details. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

No one talking about kitkat?

Could seriously breathe new life into the tp seeing as how it's supposed to be built to run on lesser hardware.

Well, it did just come out. CM hasn't even started on it. Can't say I expect a build for at least a month, could be wrong though.
It doesn't run better on lesser hardware per se, just uses less RAM. I don't think we've really been having issues with memory, and we're still stuck with our slow Snapdragon S3.
With the amount of devs the TouchPad has, we are relying on just a handful of people to get 4.4 on it. I feel 4.3 barely made it to the TouchPad. I would love Kitkat on my beloved tablet but I hate to say that I have my doubts.

The galaxy nexus is a problematic device. First, google already said no-kitkat for the GN. Second, it's cpu and TI demise.
Your galaxy nexus is now on the list of abandoned nexus devices.
Now, regarding out tablet, first it's a qualcomm so we're not all alone on this one, but it's a very unsuported and old-unknown-binaries rom.
MAYBE someone figures out how to get the camera and bluetooth working. I keep my hopes high.
Not ready
I'm still having problems getting 4.3 settled on my TP. Too many issues (including repartitioning) still need to be solved first.

I am positive that someone will be get Android 4.4 to work especially with the fact that it uses less RAM for running the applications. Usually XDA and Rootzwiki member drmarble helps at getting the initial work for the next version of Android to work. He helped get Android 4.3 (CM 10.1 and 10.2) to work on the Touchpad. And of course JCSullins will help with developing for Android 4.4.
I am sure ROM builders like Milaq and Shumash will provide CM 11 ROMs that are Android 4.4 based although I wouldn't expect to see a CM 11 ROM until January/February at the earliest and until the official CM 11 development has begun.

i just dont see this version becoming popular.
It seems to be more of the integration of other devices and their data harvesting than any user advantages.
Despite the name, and an actual marketing contract with nestle this time, i personally think they chose the right theme colour.
Because its going to be s**t
I see 4.4 more of a stepping stone into a much bigger change to the OS.

Xiaomi Mi3 16GB Snapdragon (WCDMA)

Hello,
I dont know if my topic fits here in the category (General)
But i have a fuw questions about my new smartphone (Xiaomi Mi3 WCDMA version)
Because i have always used a Google phone (android) MIU5 is a hole diffrent OS.
So my question is there a possible way to install Google Play, and that is very stable on it?
Because i know xda-board is a very advanced board if it is something about phones, so if somebody can help me out here.???
------------
My Xiaomi Mi-3 Review.
New phone:
Since Xiaomi had released the Mi-3, there was an outbreak.
With the specifications and the low price Xiaomi had set an smartphone that is not only in China so populair but abroad the country to.
And you can see it with sales they made everytime the new stock was out.
In serval minutes there was a bunch of them sold out. The biggest one was more than 100.000 units in less than 90 seconds. You can see how populair the phone was. Because the new version with the latest highly clocked Snapdragon800 in it. Xiaomi set up an new variaty of people to there market.
Xiaomi is still out of stock in the most versions, and will be for a fuw moths.
Design:
The design of the Xiaomi Mi-3 is one of the most beuutifull phones ever made. The roundings the buttons the ultra-thin magnesium alluminum alloy gives the phone a very nice look. The roughness of the phone with his big 5 inch screens feels so nice in your hands. You dont have trouble with using one hand (only if you have big hands)
Hardware:
Xiaomi haves two versions of the Mi-3. The tegra4 TD-SCDMA only can be used in China, and the Snapdragon WCDMA an European/American/others parts of the world. Both CPU’s are diffrent clocked. the Tegra4 is clocked to max with 1.8Ghz, and the Snapdragon800 is clocked 2.3Ghz. The driffrence in the speed of the phone is actualy the same. Both versions are smooth tasking. There is no lag or something bothering you. With his 2GB on both version you are for now a happy guy. You can play the latest games on your phone as you want. With the new amazing LG Full-HD resolution IPS screen it makes the so beuatifull. The colors of the phone pop out. The angles on the screen are nice, somebody next to you will not having trouble to not see the screen.
Software:
Mi-3 is running on two diffrent android version. The tegra4 runs at an 4.2.3 android. And Snapdragon800 runs on an 4.3 newer version of the android. When you recieve your phone you can choose if you want to use it in chinese or English. If you choose english you still will see some chinese signs at the screen. This is one thing that the developers dont have chainged. But i cant hurt. You will not recieve Google App store on it, you must download it by your self. Xiaomi is very smart if you wanna use Google services, you must have an Xiaomi account, and trough the account you can download google installer. And from there you can use any google app you want.
Yes, it is possible!

I don't know if this is the right category for you question, but I'm not a moderator so I don't need to know that actually.
What I know on the other hand is that you can easily install Google Apps (GApps) on your Xiaomi Mi3. You won't need any experience with flashing gapps from internal storage or SD-card, it is easy as pie!
Once you have your phone open the MIUI Store and search for "Google". The developer Eric Xiang has put together an excellent Google Installer app. The name is in Chinese, but just search for it in English and you will find it. The installer will take care of everything else.
If that doesn't work, you should try rooting your device and flashing Gapps manually.
thank you in advance.
The GAPP store is in english right? Not chinese.
Hope i will can fix it. Uhm are there customroms made for the XIAOMI or not? So i can try that to if it doesent work for me...
How do you like the phone so far?

and yet another one by a friend of mine:
I have the phone for about 3/4 days right now.
And the MIUIV5 launcher, if you using it for the first time. Its a little bit strange.
But after using it for a while, you learn fast and see how powerfull the launcher is.
The 1ste you always do is install gapps on your phone.
I Had to make some questions an supported boards, to get it work. But now i am pleased with the usage of the phone and the powerfull hardware whats in it.
Love the phone for now, will definitly stay at the MIUI community.
One thing: i hope they can fix an Android Stock 4.4 Kitkat OS with multi-lang....
I dont know why Cynogenmod doesent come for Xiaomi Mi-3, or other custom roms for it.
XDA-developers are the moest anticipated people for smartphones, i hope they will be release an Xiaomi mi-3 miuiV5 or later v6 CUSTOM ROM OR SOMETHING.
i tough there will be alot of them because it is Androind but nothing
A nice review. I have a great apetytna this smartphone. Are you able to compare its screen with LG G2 or HTC One? I wonder if it is comparable to, or better or worse.

The phone by it selfs is great, but there are some issues that i must solve before you can use the phone.
My issues are:
1. 3G not working well <- not solved
2. Ram is filling quikly <- not solved
3. Google account had some problems (was my fault because did not install google contacts.apk) <- solved
If these things are solved, than you have an bad-ass phone..

I'm using the latest MIUI version: 4.1.24 in Polish and I have no problems from the department in both the 3 and 2G. Everything in my MI 3 WCDMA works perfectly.
I have the CDMA version with miuiV5. It works great. No problems encountered. I just wish I knew how to make a custom ROM. I have a developer rom and the V5 rom. Tried both and they both work fantastic.
Maybe you know how to turn off the meter data. After exceeding the set limit further changes cause complications itelefon off my data transmission. I do not need to set this limit, I enclosed it with curiosity, and I have no problem.

Yes, me too.
It's very sad that there isn't a real development community for this great phones.
In my opinion the mi3 offers the best hardware on the whole market to a fantastic price. I can't understand why there are no developers for roms like AOKP or CM or AOSP.

It is not. Perhaps it's successor - the rumoured MI3S - might have this feature.
Btw. I have a 64GB Mi3 and so far I am very happy with this phone; even without LTE-support.
I am very happy with my phone. It is a 64GB Grey Mi3. The 3G on AT&T is fine but slow.
The Data speeds are not that fast but it gets the job done. I get some time out errors from time to time.
I like to be able to get the Temp that displays on the lock screen and home screen(default) to display current location instead of in China. Can't seem to get the default Maps app to work in the US even with it locking in on GPS it displays China. Google Maps works fine but a little show and sometimes has defaulted back to a Chinese location first until a signal lock happens and then it will find my current location.
Starbucks app doesn't work on my phone.
When I click on an autocorrected word that has a red underline on it the app will crash and send me back to home. Bug has been reported.
When saving pictures from the internet it doesn't default to a standard folder. It uses the cloud folder and even with sync to cloud off I have to move it to the main local folder to get the pictures available to send or attach to email.
Speedtest.net doesn't connect to show download speeds. It will show a slow upload speed.
Visual VoiceMail doesn't seem to work on AT&T's network. If I give them my old HTC One IEMI number the visual voicemail works but the DATA does not. I can live with it for now.
Anyone got the Visual Voicemail to work with connecting Data on AT&T? If so what phone did they put in the system to make it work? the HTC One does not work. Confirmed this twice.
If they release an LTE version that would work with AT&T here that would be killer!!! I really do like the phone. The size, the weight, the shape. I would love to see this one in White or Silver 64GB.

There will be very soon, devices squad on snapdragon 800 SoC : xperia z1, zr (?), LG G2, Note 3 and more ... mean we can start poke their code to used as "base" to start write device tree on cm / aosp/ aokp. I have also very limited skill to write android code ... let us learn together. Mine on stock MIUIv5 and I satisfy with the phone performance. Miui serve what we need for basic computed including archiving/extracting files. It's handy i did not need to carry my laptop anymore when travelling

Xperia Tablet Z still worth buying???

I am looking to buy a tablet and I found a 32gb version of the Tablet Z for $100. Is this tablet still worth buying?
I know it has better specs than some of the newer cheaper tablets but just want to see what people's experiences are. Thanks
I have one and use it all the time. For $100, I don't think you could go wrong. I use mine for studying, and watching YouTube mostly and will occasionally use chrome remote desktop to log in to my laptop at home. Have never had any issues with it that a reboot didn't clear up and I only reboot once ever few months. Hope this helps.

Why not just stick with stock? I've tried many custom ROMs during my "flashaholic" days - but have always ended up back at stock because :
most of the custom ROMs have issues
some apps won't work if your tablet is rooted
Still enjoying my Tablet Z after 4 years of ownership :good:
I can't justify buying something newer.
Why root?
I have to agree with Greta, I see no reason to root. Everything just works as is with no problems. From the research I did about rooting this particular device, there just wasn't enough of a gain by doing so. Hope you enjoy it.

Nougat is really nice on this tablet. I recommend the LineageOS rom from this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-tablet-z/general/rom-cyanogenmod-14-t3496758
I have no issues and with it and it's fast, I also get insane battery life with standby being especially is impressive.

Yep!
All firmwares, based on 7.1.x Nougar, are very smooth and responsive. So highly recommended.

Nougat is really great on this tablet. I really appreciate the multi window feature. It's fully functional.
I agree with you, underclocking / overclocking feature would probably help in some case.

Glad to hear it is working out well for you. I dropped mine anout a month ago and it is toast. I took it apart and tried selling stuff like the camera and ports online but nobody wanted them. I hate seeing things go to waste and was practically giving them away. Did you get a dock with yours? I have one of those, too. May try to ebay it along with the spare parts and the smart cover.

I'm also thinking of buying an used SGP311 and running the latest LineageOS on it. Does anyone with SGP311 have problems playing Clash Royale?
I have a Samsung SM-T320 running Kitkat 4.4.2 with Clash Royale and no problems. If I try SlimKat 4.4.4, LineageOS 13/14, CM 11/12, etc they ALL crash/reboot with Clash Royale. Only stock works with Clash Royale on the SM-T320.
The SGP311 uses Adreno 320 GPU and the SM-320 uses the Adreno 330 GPU. I'm just worried that whatever problem in Slimrom, LineageOS, CM, etc that causes Clash Royale to crash/reboot tablet might be related to the Adreno GPU drivers/code.
If you're into streaming services there is a thing that you should know: The Xperia Tablet Z has Google Widevine L3 DRM, that means that Netflix will NOT play HD movies, even with the most expensive subscription. Netflix needs Widevine L1, which you dont get with this device, even with an up-to-date OS installed. I dont know how this is with Amazon Prime.
EDIT: The SoC of this tablet does not suppert 60fps video streaming. This means that YouTube videos with 60 fps have a lot of stuttering. 60fps Twitch streams dont play the video at all, you can only hear the audio.

As far as i remember Google Widevine DRM was ported to custom firmwares based on android 7.1.2 and probably 8.1. You'd better check them.

Yep, you're right. Widevine L1 support is not available, and i think it will never be.
