Opening Mi Pad 4 yourself? - Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Questions & Answers

Has anyone managed to open their Mi Pad 4 for repairs by themselves? I've been trying it myself for days to replace the usb c port, but I've only managed to scratch some sides a bit...it just wouldn't budge! Bought all sorts of tools (suction cup pliers, prys, etc), but nothing works for me... Watched a couple of YouTube videos but not really helped. I am quite weak physically, which doesn't help! I have a local repair shop who can do it for a reasonable price, but I want to see if I can do it myself... Cheers!

You say you've watched a couple of YouTube video, there's a number of them. Just search for 'mi pad 4 teardown'. That's your best bet for getting it apart

(how I fixed it) Dropped my Touchpad - touch not responding

Hey all,
I recently had an accident with my 32GB Touchpad I managed to recover from, so I thought I'd share the story for the benefit of anyone else who encounters the same issue. That said, if you do have this problem, proceed at your own risk. I am not advising you to do anything I did below, rather I am sharing my own experience.
Basically it got dropped around 6-8 feet down a carpeted stairwell. It appeared to land on the side edge with the volume button. To my surprise, the screen wasn't cracked and the buttons responded, but it wouldn't respond to touch.
First, I know this isn't covered by the warranty. [SOAPBOX] Of course, one could just lie to tech support and possibly get it covered, but that isn't how I roll. I've gotten by well in life by being straight with tech support but not taking any bs, not gonna change now.[/SOAPBOX] So, I did a live chat with tech support just to see what it would cost. Short answer, $238 for a tablet I paid $150 for. So no, I decided that if I couldn't fix it myself I'd part it out to others with broken displays etc, or give it to a dev. If I got any money for it, I'd buy an actual android pad.
Once again, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK! I take no responsibility if you damage or brick your device.
Past experience told me that most likely a connector inside was the culprit. I search the forums and interwebs for dissembly instructions. I couldn't find any good ones, but managed to figure it out from the following two links;
http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/productdata/Countries/_MultiCountry/disassembly_handhe_2011617223529.pdf
http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/cracking-open-the-hp-touchpad/6253940?seq=8&tag=thumbnail-view-selector;get-photo-roto
If anyone knows a good dissasembly tutorial i missed on youtube or elsewhere, please post it. Anyway, I found the ribbon cables from the panel were indeed partially pulled from their connectors (see attached ribbon 1.jpg). Flipping up the black covers (see attached ribbon 2.jpg) I was able to reposition it and flipped the covers back down.
After a bit of trouble reassembling it (due to my being rough with the side catches around the bezel), my Touchpad is back to its former self, not counting a few scuffs in the plastic around the bezel from by hamfisted work. I'm happy, and my wife is happy I'm not eyeing the Touchpad I just gave her for her birthday . I hope someone benefits from this post, as I've benefited from others' posts here. Just trying to give back.
interesting read. Knowing what you know now, how long would think the whole process would take?

No more than 15 minutes. Of course, I'd try to find a better tool like the one pictured in the linked PDF in my post above. Just gotta be sure the catches around the bezel are free so as not to pull up them up as you lift the lcd panel. They're actually separate pieces of plastic, not part of the bottom mold. One had slide out from under one of the PCBs. I had to remove a few screws to lift said PCB to reposition the catch, otherwise the panel wouldn't snap back in fully.

I definitely give the thumbs up with that tutorial. Very good. A pocket knife blade was my tool of choice to take the cover off!
Thanks for the tutorial.
Sorry to revive the old thread. However, my touchpad is not responding to touch, everything else is functional (it boots perfect and able to update using JC toolbox to latest 4.4.4).
I tried to plug unplug the video connector few times (after disassembling) but still it does not respond to touch. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Do you still have WebOS or a touch enabled recovery installed? That could help determine if the problem is more likely hardware or software. If it is hardware you have already done what I could do.

I have completely wiped the system and removed the WebOS by using JC toolbox. However, I do have touch recovery and while booting in recovery also have problem for touch(does not respond to touch, can select using volume up/down and home button). Does it mean touch screen is now defective? Can it be replaced and is it worth try? Appreciate your input.
Thanks

I would agree it sounds like either the digitizer or control board may be bad. I don't know enough to say more though. As for if it is worth it, do a search on eBay. Used Touchpads sell for under $100. New for around twice that. Nonfunctional units sell for under $50. Maybe you get lucky and can buy one with a working digitizer. If it were me, I would buy a functioning used Touchpad and sell the bad one. Or keep it for spare parts. With current more powerful 10" tablets selling new for $300-500, I'd be careful not to put too much into it.
Good luck!

I couldn'd find any "more powerful" tablets with 32GB ram and wireless charging. Do you know some? I bought a used touchpad then.

You got me on wireless charging. ☺ Not counting that I was thinking of a Nexus 9 or 10, or a Galaxy Tab. A Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1" 16GB goes for $320. It has a microSD slot and an Exynos 5 Octa CPU.

Well if my son continues to beat my TP up the way he does, I will definitely look at this method for the first step to solving possible touchscreen issues haha, thanks

DNA Screen Replacement, Shop Needed

I'm wanting to have the screen replaced on my DNA but I really want to keep this device and replace the screen instead of being sent a new phone.
Has anybody replaced it themselves or had a repair shop replace it?
If you know of a repair service that did a good job for a different device, let me know and I'll contact them to check on if they will work on the DNA.

Buy one of these from eBay and DIY
I opened mine up to try and modify my front flex cable lights for my capacitive buttons (Trying to go red) and the internals are very organised. It would be very simple to replace.
Be careful though. I have received 2/10 or so for Samsung phones that had flex cables too short to reach their housing, so be sure to check feedback on the exact cable. If you need any help man let me know and I can assist via webcam with my own phone - Yes that's right, I'm prepared to take mine apart again (this time I can make a video maybe)
Sadly because most repair centres only sell genuine screens/digi they are classified as OEM and can't be sold to the public for DIY in case you screw it up and causes issues for HTC warranty later down the line!
theres a video on how to take it apart and fix the screen yourself. But if the screen is anything like the SGS3, it's going to run you couple hundred bucks.
Somebody posted this video, but can't remember who it was.
Instructions and all are on Etradesupply.com

Thanks for that video mate, I wish this was up when I did my tear down!
Thank you so much for this information, it's a HUGE help to hear from someone who has been on the inside.
I've torn down many phones and done a lot of repair work. My DNA was a Valentine's Day present from my amazing girlfriend, and we walked into Verizon and dropped $700 cash on this thing. So the last thing I wanted to do was tear into the phone and make a minor problem into a catastrophic loss.

Consider looking on www.cnn.cn, I've had very good luck with them in the past.
Same f'in thing just happened to me.
Anyone have any success with screen replacement?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Broken my S3's screen

Hello
A few days ago i dropped my Galaxy S3 while pulling it out of my pocket and the LCD is cracked. I dropped my S3 a few times but this time it fell on the edge and it landed like a "brick". The whole phone functions properly except the Screen won't turn on. The Touchscreen and home button works fine but the Menu & Back button don't work. I took it to the repair shop and they said that it costs ~ £180 to repair it.
Are there any suggestions on what i should do? Any cheap good screen replacement on eBay?
And is there an app that allows me to control my S3 from my PC via USB preferably but WiFi will do also.
Thanks for reading

The issue is, the front housing, glass, digitiser and screen come as a "sealed unit". So yes it is expensive. You can pick them up a bit cheaper on eBay but then it needs fitting.
If you're searching eBay, we have AMOLED screen, not LCD

The problem is with these apps, they need setting up first and you need to be able to see to do it. k If you have a HDMI input somewhere, you can use an MHL cable to see it on a tv, but thats all I can think of really.
Problem with screen replace is not many do a proper job see multiple posts on XDA .

S3 screen
First thing is to go to service centre and ask to see service manager, usually its at the discretion of the manager to give a discount. I was lucky, went to get my Note 1 complete LCD & digitizer (broken) replaced for US$120 2 month ago. Yesterday I cracked my S3 screen n i went back to sc again got it replaced in 1 hr for $106 and i also change the headphone jack port ($11). Now i ve 2 brand new looking phone as they replace the fuull screen with frame. Thanks Samsung. So it pays to visit the sc 1st and speak with them rather than post yr problem. Cheers.

In the UK the Sammie service centres have to send the 'faulty' AMOLED/LCD screen back to Samsung, if it's cracked (as is likely in your case) the service centre do not get reimbursed for parts cost in the repair and as the complete house costs over £140 (and have to be bought in lots of 10 units) you can see there's no money in it for them to discount.
As rootsu stated above it's all one housing, replacing glass can be done but not the actual screen element.
I would suggest try to find someone with a working screen setup perhaps on ripbay or gumtree and drop in your motherboard to their working screen, anything under £150 and you're saving some money. Else try to sell yours but beware of buyers who'll try to make a claim on ebay after they received stating 'not as described' to get you to give a part refund for the sale (i.e. you auction it for £120 they then try to get £60 or £70 back) it's a common scam for phones.
Good Luck
I was able to get the whole screen and front bezel etc for £125 from Amazon and did it myself fairly easily with no previous experience. Just follow the YouTube guides slowly and carefully and it'll be fine. The UK seller of the screen got it to me within a day or two so I didn't have to use my old Desire HD for very long.

[Q] Ooops I physically broke my phone - Anyone help with fixing?

Love my phone but had large phone in small pockets and upshot is it fell out and I accidentally drop kicked it across the room.
The plastic piece under the power and volume buttons broke and created a disconnect with the power (constant restarts and even booted into safe mode) so I had to remove it to stop the plastic from continuing to jam the power button.
I have ordered a replacement front/sides for the phone but searched high and low for a fix-it or tear down video.
Anyone know how I can get the old one off and the new one on?
Any Videos around?
The phone is usable but I would prefer it whole. Can anyone help?
Cheers.

Thank you very much for this manual which assisted me in the teardown of my Z Ultra.
I broke the screen in my pocket, glass and digitizer were broke making the phone useless.
The only thing missing was taking the coverglass/lcd off the frame, seems Sony replaces screen and frame as one unit.
I used one of the various guides for Xperia Z, heat and prying tool, and im now ready to put a new screen in, trying to find the best deal now.

What can I say, I take care of my things
As I said, it is entirely thanks to the amazing people here that kept it going with up to date ROMs.
To be fair, the last few years it's only been used for bedtime reading and an alarm clock. Still getting 3-4 days lite use on a single charge after 8 years.
