Hello, I am trying to update the firmware on my phone.
Bottom line up front is that I'm getting the:
"<ID:0/006> Can't open the serial(COM) port" from Odin.
I've read this is usually a communications issue, but I'm curious why I can connect the PC to the phone when the phone is in it's normal mode and move files between the PC and the phone, but it seems to have a connection problem when Odin is running.
I'm looking for any suggestions to be able to complete the update.
Details follow:
The phone is an Galaxy S9+ G965U
Product code VZW
I am trying to install:
G965USQS8FTJ6
When I run Smartswitch, it claims the device is up to date and no update is required.
When I check for a system update on the phone, it says it is up to date and no update is required.
I used Frija to download the lastest firmware:
SM-G965U_2_20201106184604_qnk441l2qh_fac.zip which is Android 10, Product code VZW.
System update history shows G965USQS7CSK4.
The baseband version g965usqs7csk4
I start Odin on the PC.
I reset phone to Odin mode.
One thing to note is that the Odin display on the phone screen is normal brightness for a moment and then it dims.
"KG STATUS: Checking" never changes.
The ID:Com lights up blue "Added!"
I Add BL, AP, CP, CSC, USERDATA to Odin fields
I am using the original cable included with the phone.
I can connect the phone to my PC and move files on/off phone.
Odin text string from failed attempt:

If I remove and insert USB to phone, while Odin is running, Windows claims USB device not recognized.
If I remove and insert USB to phone, while the phone is in it's normal mode, Windows immediately recognized the device and opens file explorer.
I'm curious why I can connect the PC to the phone when the phone is in it's normal mode and moves files around, but it seems to have a connection problem when Odin is running.
I have enabled developer mode.
I have turned on USB debugging.
OEM debugging is not yet available. I don't know if I need this or not for a Samsung released firmware version.
Phone information shows:
One UI: 1.0
Android Version 9
Baseband Version G965USQS7CSK4
Service Provider SW version: SA)MC_SM-G965U_OYN_VZW_PP_0050
VZW/VZW/VZW
I removed the Samsung USB driver from PC and reinstalled the latest (1.7.23.0, I hope).
I've read that USB 3.0 can be a problem, and USB 2.0 is preferable but my PC only has USB 3.0. Has anyone had success with USB 3.0?
I've tried this with Odin 3.11.1, 3.12.7, 3.13.1, 3.14.1, 3.14.4 because I read that sometimes a different version of Odin will succeed where another failed.
I have uninstalled KIES and restarted the PC so I know KIES is not running.
"Verizon Wireless Software Upgrade Assistant - Samsung" is not running
"Verizon Wireless Software Utility Application for Android - Samsung" is not running.
"Smart Switch" is not running.
Thank you in advance for suggestions.

Hi,
I've got a question about the Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9300). Before this issue it was completely original (not rooted or anything like that).
A few dags ago the phone didn't start. The battery was full (of course), the Samsung logo (with the device type etc, not the animated logo) appeared but it did nothing else. I've waited a long time, and still nothing has happened. So I Googled a lot on many sites on how to fix this problem.
I ended up with the solution 'Flash the stock ROM', so I went to sammobile (and later to samsung-updates.com) to find the original stock ROM, created by Samsung.
I found it, and tried to flash it (I put the phone in download mode (device info in the left upper corner), and the downloadmode is enabled, and I received a notification in Odin (I tried v1.85 and I'm using v3.09 right now) that says 'Added'.
This stock ROM (flashing-process) didn't work so I kept on Googling and found some solutions. I've downloaded custom ROM's and tried to download ClockworkMod recovery (I wanted to install this so I could wipe the phone and reinstall the stock ROM). Unfortunatly it didn't work.
This is the error that I get from Odin (when trying to flash the Stock ROM):
Code:

I also tried to install CWM Recovery with Odin, but I ended up with another error (as you can see in the PNG file that I uploaded with this thread).
Can anyone help me with restoring this phone to factory settings (and stock ROM)?
Thanks in advance!
Explanation for the screenshots (uploaded to this thread):

screen2.png: attempt to flash Stock ROM.
screen3.png: error after flashing Stock ROM.

Seems, that you must rebuild your partitions. Look here.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I downloaded the ZIP file from Mega, and unpacked in (and configurated it exactly like in his screenshot), but I can't find the PIT file.
Any idea where I can find that?
Without the PIT file I'm getting an error.
When I download another PIT file from the internet for this device, I get this error: (FYI: I tried 3 different PIT files):

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply. I really appreciate it.
I downloaded the 4.1 version en copied the mx.pit file to the 4.3 directory.
When I configure everything exactly like the screenshot (in the other thread, link is in first post in this thread), I still get an error:

Yep it failed on Re-Partition (pit file) looks like you may need service repair. Try using Odin 1.85 from here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539 << If fails service repair recommended.

Thanks for your reply.
What do you mean by that (service repair)?
Should I use Odin 1.85 to flash it, or do you mean that the phone is broken and need to be repaired by Samsung?
Another question: in Odin 3.09 there is an option (checkbox) that says 'NAND Erase', should I check this while following the tutorial (first reply on this thread)?
Thanks!

Hi,
This device has the android stock rom (don't know which version) and the stock recovery.
Tried to flash it via odin but no hope, always getting FAIL message. tried all versions of ODIN, even with PIT file, but same results.
Could it be a hadware issue (NAND defective ?).
Any help appreciated.
What caused the bootloop? What part of the flash is it failing on? Not knowing what version was on it before would probably be why you are having issues with reloading the original firmware. The firmware you load in Odin should be the same version or newer and from the correct region or carrier, if it is specific to one. Very unlikely it is a hardware issue.

Don't know (device belongs to a friend, he said a virus caused the bootloop-not right IMO-)

Hi! My rooted S3 started to reboot randomly and suddenly one day stopped working. It's stuck on the "Samsung Galaxys3 GT-I9300" screen. I'm able to enter download mode and recovery mode. I can't use factory reset/wipe data because as soon as it starts the phone reboots.
I've tried several guides to no avail, I just can't get it to work. Kies can't see the phone, but Odin works. Even tried cleaning the power button just in case, but I think that only works for the samsung logo loop. Last thing I tried was a "GT-I9300XXEMG4_KOR_MULTI_FACTORY". This is what happens:

I'm at a loss. The phone worked flawlessly (rooted) for more than a year and suddenly this happens. Maybe when the random reboots started I could have done something, but what's done it's done. I've read that I could try changing the motherboard, but they are kinda expensive for something I don't know if it will even work. Tried different computers, USB cables, but it's always the same. I remember I had the avast anti theft app, but I don't know if this is what's preventing me from wiping the data or fixing the phone.
A Hello,
I´m from Portugal and i have a smartphone GT-I9300.
It´s with an official rom but, with the update of firmware to 4.3 he just go erronius and now just play logo and nothing more. In recovery mode, i can´t do nothing, (Wipe / factory, nothing...) in download mode, it craches with kies, kies3, odin 3.7 untill 3.11. I tryad adb but it says "error: closed". it´s not rooted. so, i think in move on to root and install cyanogenmod (I have that in my GT-I9505 withaout problems).
Can any person help me? i will post some photos.:.
@2000hdi: before flashing any custom-ROM, you need a working firmware. So go to sammobile.com and download your correct 4.3-firmware and corresponding Odin and Win-drivers. Deinstall all KIES, Odin, Samsung-things on your PC. Follow the short instructions from download-site exactly. Use USB-port on mainboard. If Odin still doesn't recognize your phone, change USB-cable.
USB ok
Hello again ,
My USB cable, port, its ok, he recognises in odin but during instalation craches. In kies, he download the firmware but during instalation, frozes on 0%.
How can i put some photos to demonstrate?
Forget KIES. Post the Odin-log (text).

A friend told me about a file: pit 512 from the days he have is I9300 with the same problem and to use a oldest odin version like 3.1... but, i dont now...
Your partitions seem to be gone. Try Repartition, for 4.3. If this doesn't work, your NAND is gone.
Link to 4.3 down. In the others files i flashed, i used to test the repartition button. In case of nand. What to do?
...to say goodbye
Still another German source. If you know the procedure, you'll find the download-files though.
Great...

Hello again, the photos are the result of using a pc XP, instead of a portable because the USB ports on motherboard, original cable and Odin 3.12. Can anyone explain what is the problem now and possible fix? Thanks.
Oficial firmware from sammobile
I have a Samsung s7 stuck on the front page with frp lock, I made a mistake while installing a custom rom. I am trying to install a stock rom: but all I get is odin cant get through serial port or Complete write operation failed. The most common response is it cant get through the serial(com) port. FAILED.(Many Many Many times) I have tried different usb port, reinstalled usb drives, don't have kies do it cant clash with that The last one I did came up with this.

Hi , you can try one of this steps : )
1. Reset COM ports:
http://blog.cognitioninfotech.com/2009/01/how-to-clear-or-reset-com-port.html
2. Uninstall all drivers for your device like Android , MTP driver , adb driver , etc....
Use USBDeview toll to uninstall hidden drivers .
32 bit:

64 bit:
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip
3. Download latest version of ODIN
https://odindownload.com/download/Odin3_v3.13.1.zip
4. Make sure that Windows Update is Avtivated and also make sure that PC drivers for usb is updated or just reinstall them.
5. Disable Antivirus protection , and Reset Windows Firmware to Default settings .
6. Use Original cable , and usb 2.0 ports from back .
7. If you was using Android 7 with security patch from April 2018 , flash this combination firmware once your COM port is show up.

An example of how it should look:

7. If that doesn't help you make sure you are using Latest stock firmware , otherwise flashing with always fail !
To make sure you are using right firmware send me 7 and 8 number from IMEI number : ) .
Good luck
