So I've been trying to play around with my new VZW V10.
There's no OEM Unlock Option in the developer tools - not surprising.
However, I can't even get to boot into the stock bootloader?
This is my first LG Device, but neither VOL UP + POW worked or "adb reboot bootloader" Both instances go straight into the red screen.
Any other VZW V10 users have better luck than me?
I got a Verizon V10 today too, do you think at least we can get the root access?
So for now it appears that only the T-Mobile one can unlock the bootloader and install TWRP and SuperSU for root. If it can't happen on the Verizon V10, then I'll be keeping th Note 4 Dev a bit longer, or change over to T-Mobile as I'm getting tired of Verizon locking up all their new phones.

That's probably because VZW has disabled fastboot mode altogether. The lack of the OEM unlock option indicates they don't want you unlocking the bootloader. Unless someone creates a pre-rooted system image than be flashed via download mode, this is pretty much a brick wall
If you do obtain root it will probably be difficult to keep root once MM drops. I am pretty sure you won't be able to downgrade back to lollipop either.
Given VZW history, does any of this really surprise anyone.......the handwriting has been on the wall since they patched the Loki exploit on the Samsung S4.
Trust me make the jump to T mobile. I was a Verizon customer for over 15 years still had 2 lines unlimited data. They were going to raise me to 60 a month just for the data. Made the jump to T mobile and having looked back. Verizon didn't even call me or nothing. What a joke
also all I can get into is download mode.

T-mobile Sucks, yes I've tried it. Voice quality is crap LTE data is crap, so I pay a little more for verzion (I still have unlimited data though).

T-Mobile has improved their network a lot in the last few years. If you don't get coverage than that is understandable a phone carrier is only as good as the service you get. Where I live i tend to get faster speeds than VZW and At&t.
A Stagefright exploit or a new version of the low effort root from the G4 is your best bet. Once you get root, you may be able to branch out and get the rest uncovered.

T-Mobile now has the second best coverage next to Verizon, but they are catching up fast. Considered the fastest improving network and America's fastest LTE. They're goal is is to cover 100% of the US with LTE, and according to reports they have plenty of money to do it. T-Mobile is sinking Sprint and AT&T. Voice quality is great now. They use VOLTE and HD voice. Check this out http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage.html
I used to be a Verizon customer no doubt their network is the best, however they charge to much and restrict phones. I been with Tmo 2years and never looked back.

Blah blah we get it. T-Mobile gets all the unlocked love. But most the people interested in this thread dont need to be reminded of that fact. We're with vzw either because of coverage or unlimited data usage. If the grass truely was greener on the other side I promise u we would have switched already and this thread never would have existed.

To get into download mode, with power off, hold volume up and plug usb cable in. After it starts you can let volume go. Cable connected to pc. It's like the g3 and g4. Recovery mode is power and volume down. This is how I do it.

Cool thanks! I'm new to LG, I've thought fastboot and download mode were the same thing with two different names! Crazy to me that we can't even get into fastboot mode.
Hopefully the people smarter than me are interested in this phone

I was using T-mobile up until a year ago along side my vzw. The fast data was slowed after a little usage and call quality was horrible. Calls would drop too often. They only have good coverage around large cities. You can stop with your PR rep BS because Tmobile is not that great of a service.
My question/problem. What/why do I have a good 4 bars (of 5 bars) of data signal normally, but, when I decide to dial and make a telephone call, the signal strength goes to barely one bar as soon as I hit the dial button on the phone? I have not moved myself or the phone's location. The call may dial, but goes in and out and, more often than not, drops the call. At the same time, if I receive a call from someone, it is normally a much better signal, and does not drop or go in and out.
I am on Verizon phone (vs996) Frankenstein to us998 30b (pie). I have recently tried android 10 roms (Havoc, POSP). I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not? Very frustrating when trying to call someone.
Any thoughts or explanations or, hopefully, fixes?
Thx

If you are using Verizon on US998 firmware, then you don't have access to VoLTE (which is phone calls over LTE, Voice over LTE). LTE started out as a data-only service but for actual phone calls, carriers were still using 3G HSPA or CDMA (Verizon, Sprint). When making a phone call, phones temporarily bump down to 3G, and then jump back to LTE after the phone call is over.
With the VoLTE protocol, that finally allowed phone calls with LTE. It added VOICE capability to LTE.
However, different carriers treat VoLTE differently. T-mobile allows VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling for US998 phones, while AT&T and Verizon are more stingy. They reserve VoLTE mostly for their branded phones running their carrier firmware.
I'm an AT&T customer and I've never had VoLTE because I've never used a branded AT&T phone. For me, on AT&T, when I make a phone call I am bumped down temporarily to AT&T HSPA. Then, after the phone call, it jumps back to LTE.
If I were to flash the AT&T TWRP flashable zip, possibly I could enable that. But it's not just firmware, it's also a setting on the carrier side that has to be enabled.
Bottom line, what's happening is you are seeing you STRONG LTE signal. But when you make a phone call, you are being temporarily bumped down to Verizon CDMA. However, Verizon is in the process of dismantling all their CDMA towers. That's why your CDMA signal is so weak. Verizon plans to shutdown CDMA entirely by end of 2020. After that, you will need VoLTE to make phone calls on Verizon.
Since you have an actual VS996, you can flash the VS996 TWRP-flashable zip. Once on that firmware, see if VoLTE is enabled on your account (carrier side setting) and see if when you make phone calls you stay on LTE and are not bumped down to CDMA?
Thx, Chazz. So, it's a Verizon thing? Not necessarily something I caused by going back and forth trying out the different Android 10 roms. Good to know. I will try the 996 rom later today, since I don't need the Hotspot for a couple of days. As always, you've been very helpful, thx. :good:

Yes, especially if you see strong LTE signal before making the phone call. Control freak Verizon (mostly) only allows VoLTE on Verizon firmware with Verizon branded phones. There may be exceptions (maybe Pixel phones?) and I know the ZTE Axon 7 (not a branded Verizon phone) somehow got VoLTE not only on ZTE stock firmware but also on LOS ROM -- but I believe ZTE paid Verizon to allow that. It's the exception that proves the rule.
Here's a a more in depth article about Verizon CDMA being shut down end of this year.
https://grantcountyreview.com/content/verizon-wireless-postpones-its-shutdown-3g-cdma networks
when Verizon closes its 2G and 3G networks at the end of 2020, 3G phones will become obsolete and non-VoLTE LTE phones will not be able to make or receive calls.

You DO have a Verizon VoLTE capable phone -- a Verizon VS996 -- but for V30 only on Verizon firmware. If you were using T-mobile with US998 firmware, you would have no problems with VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling. T-mobile is more open than Verizon about such perks.
I don't get VoLTE with AT&T on US998 firmware, but AT&T has no plans to end 3G HSPA anytime soon.
Chazz, I thought I would give a quick update. Late Last night/early this morning, I switched to vs99630c. I have made two phone calls, one to Florida, one to Washington state. Both connected and sounded so much better than when with the us99830b Rom. Even though both dialers had a little HD in the upper left hand corner. This Rom kept the same 3 or 4 bar designation for the signal strength. Much happier with it. Even though I don't have a hotspot (may have to pay the $10(?)or so to set it up, if I decide to stay on here.
Also, I have just seen a 99630c debloated Rom someone has made, that I might try in the next day or so.
I so wanted to try the android 10 Roms, but I just had too many small issues (reboots, no hot spot, system ui crashes, etc.).
Thnx, again for your help and guidance.

Then you are now probably using Verizon VoLTE, which is using LTE signal -- not the increasingly degraded CDMA signal Verizon will completely shut off December 31, 2020.
Verizon is probably already deprecating those towers -- leaving just enough, like when you're on the highways.

Yes, we have Oreo VS996 KDZ. It's actually "20k", because it took Verizon two attempts to fully release LG V30 Oreo. And they released a couple extra updates for Verizon related bugs. So, although it's equivalent to US998 20h, it's a higher letter.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/vs996-lg-v30-verizon-vs996-t3865398
You need to have VoLTE enabled in your Verizon account, besides flashing this firmware. It helps to have it already enabled from a Verizon branded phone. But sometimes a helpful store rep willing to bend the rules can do it for you.

You'll lose the no bloatware experience, but you can fix that with Titanium Backup.
As for dirty flashing, you can try... If it doesn't work, then you have to factory reset and clean install. Don't forget to reflash Magisk.

Seems like, yes.
I had to do a few steps to manually activate HD/VOLTE on my VS996 phone when I was on VZ. I documented the steps somewhere here (using ShortcutMasterLite). I know at least one other member here used the same steps on his phone. I'm thinking you'll be fine once you're on VS996.
I have not switched to Pie... still running Oreo. I have heard too many issues with Pie, so I have no desire to bother. I can't imagine VZ's Pie release is any better than Pie US998. VZ is too lazy to do anything else right, so why would they bother fixing what's wrong on US998.
Just want to quickly update this thread. I dirty flashed the VS99620K.zip in TWRP, then immediately flashed the latest Magisk zip. Everything updated perfectly, installed about 10 VZ apps, and I now have VOWIFI (and can send/receive texts!), though haven't been able to check VOLTE as I'm currently in a dead zone.
I'd already had HD calling active on my account, but can't select the option to also enable Video Calling. It says I need to contact support. I chatted multiple times with VZ support who claim it's active, though every time I try to enable it, it gives me the same error. What is this option, and do I need it? I'm pretty sure I was able to use Duo, Skype, Zoom, etc before the ROM update, am I spinning my wheels here?
Also, independent of this upgrade, my motion GIFs in any text app don't move. I thought it might have something to do with the non-VZ specific kernel, but after flashing, still just shows a static picture.

Are you the account holder? Some people can't get to it as they are just user.
https://community.verizonwireless.c...video-calling-feature-is-disabled/td-p/853001
I'm not sure what Verizon video calling is. I'm guessing some Verizon-only video chat -- like Apple's FaceTime is only for iOS? If you are already using Duo, Skype, Zoom, it would seem you don't need it. But you do make sure you have voice over LTE (VoLTE, called "HD calling" Verzion) --before end of this year.

I am the only user on this account, so definitely the account holder. After more wasted chats with VZ, they said that since my phone is not VZ branded, it's not eligible for Video Calling, which apparently is exactly as you described; Facetime for non-iphone Verizon users. I don't need that, as you said all my other platforms work fine.
How do I determine if VOLTE works? Like I said, I'm in a dead zone now, but going out to a good cell region in a few hours and can check then somehow. I did confirm that I can make calls and text over WiFi, so that's half the battle. How to check VOLTE?

I think if you have Vo-WiFi that means your VoLTE is also activated. They seem to be packaged together.
If you make a call in a good signal area, see if the "4GLTE" icon stays on when you make the call. It may even change to VoLTE icon? or HD calling icon? A Verizon user can probably tell you better. But the key is to see if there are any status bar icon changes and what they are. Also see if there is any information in the dialer GUI during the call, where you click on the dialer timer.
Yeah, don't talk to VZ. They're too stupid to help and downright liars. Your phone will work fine on their network even if it's not VZ branded (I've used US998 and H931 phones on VZ without issue).
On my phone, I did have to do some setting changes in SML (ShortcutMasterLite) to get VOLTE working. I don't think most people have to do that, but I did... and I agree, I think that got VOWIFI working as well. I'm guessing you have both, too... just need to try it. If not, you can force-activate it as I documented earlier (via SML).
My Pixel 6 hasn't arrived yet but hopefully soon. I'm getting the unlocked version and I'm a Verizon customer. My plan is to root the phone and stay on the Google builds. I don't plan to install the Verizon build. I don't want anything from Verizon except the SIM card (which I already have and plan to transfer from my previous phone).
I've heard some reports of this not working though, of intermittent or no connectivity from Verizon. Some people on other forums report that they need to go to a store for a SIM swap, or switch to eSIM, but even that only works for a while and then it drops again.
Does anyone here have more info? Is this expected to work or does Verizon have a way to force you to use their builds?

First, they are not built by Verizon they are built by Google with different modem/network items for Verizon. That is the only difference, no extra apps or anything like that. As soon as you put a VZ SIM in it you will pull the My Verizon app no matter what firmware you are using. You can uninstall it. The updates all come from Google, not the carrier.
Go to the Google factory image download page and look at the Pixel 5 downloads. You will see in March of 2021 there was only one image for everything and it was that way for months. Then this fall they split apart. This is very common, Google splits them for awhile then merges them.
The VZ version will not lock your phone, add any bloatware or anything like that. But might give you a better signal.
What you want to do will work but isn't needed and probably not the best way to do it.

Thanks... one concern is that I'm coming from a Samsung and on this phone, Verizon forces OTAs. You can delay when the update happens but only briefly. This is a VZW phone, not unlocked, but I figured the VZW firmware is pushing the updates.
Updating requires re-rooting so I'd prefer to do it on my schedule, not Verizon's. Do you know if this is going to be an issue with the Pixel?

One further thing Verizon puts on. Under "all apps" - show system - scroll down for the "my verizon services" app. You can't delete it you can only stop and disable it. It does get reenabled on some schedule, perhaps on the monthly updates, so every once in a while you need to redo the disable thing. What it does it allows Verizon to get into your phone and see all the apps you have installed and when you installed them. Also how long your system has been running, whether or not you factory reset etc. Very intrusive, imo, so I always disable it first thing and check it regularly.

These instructions worked perfectly to get esim working.
I'm using the Verizon firmware on the unlocked model. Wifi calling works and all.
I didn't get the QR code but the Reddit thread has a link for one on step 7. And my account was already CDMAless because of using a 1+ 7 Pro prior.
It took about 5-10 minutes after doing everything before I could make calls and send texts.
Idk if wifi calling works on unlocked firmware but it's enabled by a Verizon specific system app, com.verizon.mips.services
Edit. Idk why the link has a screenshot preview.
Mine didn't require any special provisioning. Running Google version of firmware. Unlocked bootloader, rooted, then inserted SIM from previous 2 XL.
Awesome, @TotallyAnxious and @Sunsparc, thank you both.

Does anyone here have more info? Is this expected to work or does Verizon have a way to force you to use their builds?

Well I'm not quite an identical situation but I'm using visible. And from what I've seen from Sears, we encounter the exact same problems as it's the same parent company. It worked instantly out of the box as soon as I pop my SIM card in on my unlocked Pixel (Global) 6 Pro. No issues at all.
However, as you're probably well aware, test builds with other games don't work. Oxygen OS 12 beta 1/2 for example, would not work with visible or Verizon Even when I put in the correct commonly unknown APN settings (There's actually four of them).

i used boot.img extract from Pixel image file and patched it on my poco x3. I don't know why i can't do it on P6 but i got te pached file then copy it to P6. then followed up the link i provided above until i got to the flashing vbmeta, using a command from that link. After i got it then i fastboot boot magisk_patched then boot into my phone. After then go to Magisk Manager, at first i have no "Direct install" so i tried to flash it in fastboot mode again. then i hot it. once i turn on the phone, the direct install was thete then i used that method to permanently rooted. hope it helps.

I don't think you can unlock the bl on the Verizon hardware. But you CAN buy an unlocked phone and put the Verizon firmware on it.

Unlocked. I always buy unlocked.
I just recently paid of my Verizon Pixel 4 XL and called Verizon to see if they could unlock the bootloader. After about an hour and speaking with Tier 2 tech support, I was informed that the bootloader is locked forever and was recommended to buy directly from Google if you need to unlock the bootloader.

You could have come here and been told the same thing in under a minute and saved yourself the time and effort. It's common knowledge since Pixel 3. Hopefully your information will help someone else out.
I know with the op n200 metro version you could put your T-Mobile sim in and unlock the phone to work with TMobile automatically, I can't find confirmation anywhere if this works with the n20 as well, does anyone here know?
I just tried with a T-mo sim card in Metro by Tmo N20 and it didn't work

Was the n20 brand new and the T-Mobile sim inserted before turning the phone on the first time? I read that's how it works on some older phones, I think metro blocked it finally but was hoping it might still work.

yes, I received the phone in mail this afternoon, Brand new and first boot was with T-mobile sim, no service and Mobile network status showed "Disconnected"
The Boot animation did change to T-mobile on a reboot with the sim inside but still no service
As I was playing around with the phone, I stumbled upon a weird way to get signal by trial and error got 4G and 5G data as well but when Wi-fi connected, data seems to switch back to 2G. Let me know if you want to know how

Sure, here it is:
1. Boot the phone with T-mo sim inside the device, once booted you wouldn't have any signal
2. Go to "Sim info & settings" > "Preferred network type" and choose "2G/3G(Automatic)"
3. Reboot the device, once booted you should see signal along with 2G icon
4. Now go back to "Preferred network type" and select "2G/3G/LTE(Automatic)", you should now have 4G (Texts and data works but call dropped)
5. Now switch to "2G/3G/LTE.5G(Automatic)", you should see 5G network (Texts, calls and data all worked fine)
5G was stable for several hours until I connected to Wi-fi and when I disconnected Wi-fi, I noticed that data said 2G.
Let me know if the above steps worked for you

Did you get an incompatible SIM error, or just no signal? Also, you can't just put a Metro SIM in a phone and have it work. You have to call them and tie the IMEI of the phone.

OP is talking about the other way around, T-mo sim in a Metro device
Nord N200 had a bug where the device could be locked to Metro but worked flawless with T-mo sim.
That bug being patched is what OP meant by "blocked"

Yeah, I got that backwards. But if he's not getting an incompatible SIM error with a T-Mobile SIM in the MetroPCS phone and actually getting an edge signal, maybe add a new T-Mobile APN profile. Should work in theory.

Thanks! Good find! Yes I was able to reproduce the behavior. Also in my case it seems that the 5G/LTE will revert back to 2g after some idle time. But I can use the airplane mode to repeat the process (without rebooting the phone) to repeat the process. I was able to reproduce on another metro phone as well. must be some kind of loop hole.

I know I already mentioned this, but did you try making a new T-Mobile APN profile and deleting the old one(s)? Maybe you wouldn't have to go through that ritual. might work, or not.

I take it you're not a MetroPCS customer. Must be something baked into the OS. I wonder if it still has the MetroPCS bloatware since it booted with T-Mobile boot animation? Anyway, there are services on eBay that will unlock this phone through the MetroPCS unlock app. I'm not selling anything just letting you know that's an option if you didn't already know.

Ah, but you need active service on it for those 180 days to be eligible to unlock it no? And now that it has T-Mobile firmware how can you unlock it from Metro? I'd download the MetroPCS unlock app from the play store and run it to see what it says.

In theory, it's 180 days of active service but in reality, they've been unlocking 180 days after activation. I pay for first month and then throw it back in the box.
Also, I didn't see the unlock app as part of bloatware, its built into settings > about. It'll pull up the same screen as in Unlock app and we can try to unlock from there but obviously, throws the error showing it needs 180 days of service to unlock and is not eligible currently

On eBay it's 75 bucks to unlock. Thats like 2 months of service and you'd be able to use it in a few days instead of having a paperweight for 6 months. Thats what I did on my old Moto One 5G Ace.
My s22 didn't have none of the issues I'm having now with features. The only difference was I had a physical Sim vs esim and both unlocked.
1. No volte option
2. No video call option
3.samsung messages no enabling RCS

This sounds like it's not properly provisioned to use those features. I would contact Verizon to make sure your phone is properly registered and that the sim allows those features.

sorta defeats the purpose of the unlocked version as in I do need those features due to family out the country that's why I thought they had cleared all this up this year apparently they have not just sad really......Apple sales unlocked phones daily no issues at all...Google should have built out their data base plants like apple and not rely on some carriers to do what is right...just sayin

No I think you need to factory reset which sucks but have the regular Verizon sim card in your phone and it should have all the features on your phone upon activation.
This has been going on for a long time. There were threads about this on S20U and S22U forums. If you are using an U.S. Unlocked phone without the Carriers Firmware sometimes you miss out on carrier specific features. Seems to prove my point since you saw the store Verizon Phone phone with the options but not yours.
I can confirm that I have all of those features on my unlocked S23U, model SM-S918U1 using a Verizon SIM.

Also just now added a Verizon eSIM to my S23U to test and I can confirm all of the features are working on my end.
One thing of note - If registration is successful, the phone will prompt you to restart device in order to activate the features associated with the SIM. I do believe this process can get hung up or something happens that prevents it from working right (I experienced that before on previous phones) - which I think you'd need to try resetting the network config and the SIM settings and go through the process of re-adding the SIM or eSIM.

I've had the unlocked s21 ultra s22 ultra and now the s23 ultra and I never had any luck getting those features to work on any of them. The only time they worked was when I flashed the Verizon firmware. Then I lost the Samsung cloud and caller ID and spam functions. So I just resolved myself to not have those features and enjoy my unlocked phone. One other thing to note when I did have RCS on Samsung messages with the Verizon ROM it only did RCS between Verizon phones. If you do figure out how to get this working let me know cuz I'd be interested in trying it too.
Thank you

That's odd. I had the same problem with T-Mobile, but when I inserted the T-Mobile sim, it downloaded the provisioning and everything worked. It sounds to me like the provisioning possibly may not have downloaded. I'd say try having them send provisioning to your phone. If you can't get them to do it, try a different carrier's sim card, so that it downloads something else, then go back to the Verizon one, so that it pulls it down again. Maybe that will work.
I only buy unlocked because the last time I paid in full a Verizon phone they tried to tack on a $30 upgrade fee.

I'd recommend doing a factory reset then and re-adding the Verizon SIM or eSIM, and make sure to restart when prompted so the phone can install the features. You should not have to flash Verizon firmware to get those features to work on the SM-S918U1.
