Fixing a nonfunctional, totally black screen (no backlight, no boot logo, ...)? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Bought recently a used Xperia Z Ultra, the LTE model (C6833), which was sold "as-is or for spare parts only". According to the seller, and based on my own, rather limited testing, the screen appears completely "dead" but given that boot-time sounds play and pressing the volume rocker results in a sound, and I'm apparently (?) able to also launch the dialer app since I was able to hear the dialer key press audio. Rebooting the device likewise results in audio, but not even the Sony boot logo is displayed on the screen, and comparing my device to other defective ones featured on some YouTube videos, such as this one, it's painfully obvious that the device featured on the video has a functional backlight that is enabled; I don't know if mine is functional but it sure ain't enabled.
The liquid indicator underneath the microSD/SIM card slot has turned pink, which indicates liquid damage of some sort, which I admit I do find odd, given that the device is otherwise in very pristine condition - it looks almost as if the previous owner was the first and only owner of the device and that the screen just randomly decided not to work one day, causing him to stash the device for several years...but I didn't ask him about that, unfortunately.
Googling led me to XDA, of course, but surprisingly even the reports here were rather sparse and old, most boiling down to either "it's a software defect, upgrade to the latest firmware" or "it's a hardware defect, send your device to Sony for warranty if it's under warranty".
Given that the motherboard appears functional and that touches on the touchscreen presumably get registered somehow, because why else would I be able to launch the dialer app and hear the sound coming from when a dialer button is pressed since there's no SIM card inserted so it can't be the SIM PIN prompt, I'd love to get this fixed but I'm a bit puzzled as to where and how to even start debugging this. Currently I've ordered an MHL cable and also a USB OTG adapter, hoping to plug the phablet into my television and that way hopefully be able to see the Android screen and navigate to Settings, set up a WiFi network and then try a firmware upgrade, but assuming this is not the adaptive backlight issue some people on XDA were talking about years ago...I don't know what to do. Help?

[Q] HD2 screen light will not switch off

Please help!
Since yesterday, after plug off from loading, my HD2 (German t-mobile ROM 1.77, Radio 2.07) doesn't switch of screen. In the past week, I haven't changed anything or installed any apps.
By pressing 'off' key, screen becomes black and will be revoked with screen lock after few seconds. When screen light gets low after predfined time, it will come back will full light after few seconds.
I've tried hard reset, installed stock ROM from t-mobile (include radio ROM) - nothing changed.
Does anyone can help?

I've seen this issue periodically here on the boards. From what I've read from the users who experience this issue, it is likely to be hardware related. One way to test this is to turn off the screen when the device is plugged in (charging)? If the screen will stay off when plugged in then I have some bad news.
The only solution I have seen is to send the device in to HTC for repair. Sorry.
I believe it has something to do with the micro usb being defective.
Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Many THX, the device is within warranty and I will request for repair.
this sounds like the "car kit mode" hardware issue.

Look at the end of the thread for the reason it is happening, and you will need to have it repaired or replaced.
Device has been repaired/changed by t-mobile Germany without any reservations within 48 hours.

[Q] Xperia active suddenly non-responsive

hi guys, first of all thanks for all the great tips and information on this site.
i have had the Active for about 6 weeks. today while i was listening to music on the phone, the screen did not light up when i pressed the unlock button. the screen was totally blank but music continued to play.
i pulled the battery and although i got the haptic feedback after turning it on, the phone did not come back to life - well at least there were no signs of life on the screen.
the battery was (is) close to fully charged. when i plug it into the usb connected to a power outlet the led light comes on, but if i try and turn the phone on, after the initial vibration (and no sign of life) the led light disappears.
similarly when i plug it into a pc, the led light appears and thats it. the pc detects the disk drive (sort of) but when i click on the f: drive icon it says "please insert a disk into drive f:"
the phone is not rooted as it has the latest firmware and basically unmodified, i have installed very few apps.
any suggestions before i take it to the service centre?
edit: forgot to mention the pc companion does detect the phone, and asks me to change the usb connection status (by dragging down the status bar) but of course i can't...
update - the phone "works" inasmuch as i can play music using the original headset and using the headset control but no display.
although the screen remained blacked out, i managed to unlock it by swiping the screen and then pressing where i thought the music controls were - that seemed to work, i could skip tracks but that's about it.
so for now i have a rather expensive mp3 player with no screen and no controls - a bit like one of those ipod shuffles that only works with the headphones...
this is very disappointing seeing i owned a defy for over a year and it took an absolute beating and is still going (my son is happily using it). the whole reason for buying this was because i run 50-60km per week in singapore so i need something that can handle some pretty rough treatment
So apparently your phone has a faulty lcd. Just take it back to get a replacement
Sent from my ST17i using XDA App
yeah sent it back to expansys already, thanks

dude, I was about to reload the factory settings and after selecting this option, my phone went blank. I restarted - it started, got the starting animation, after that the unlock screen and after unlocking it, only a blank screen with wallpaper and status bar. panicking what to do, I decided to call somebody i knew who knew somebody in sonyericssona dn they told me to download the latest SE software suit, and it is possible to flash a cell phone following a specific procedure described in it. SO i did that and it flashed my mobile. So, if it will happen to you next time you can try to perform this nice procedure if it will be of any use.
thanks i tried that as well, and i managed to reinstall the firmware but i think as dumraden correctly pointed out, my screen is (somehow) fried. i have given it back for repair so let's see what they come back with.
hopefully it was just bad luck, the phone has not had much use and very little testing of it's so-called rugged capabilities.

Screen goes black when call connects

FYI - I am posting this in hopes that my experience may anyone that goes through this same problem. My phone is S-off and rooted.
I recently had to replace my screen. I bought one from ebay. You check it out the link below if you would like.
The digitizer flex cable was a little too long and seemed not be positioned where it should be, (too far left or something like that). I made it work and got my phone back together. The screen worked just fine until I made a phone call; upon connecting the screen turned off and would not turn back on until the call disconnected. I was running Viper DNA 6.0 originally when screen replacement took place. I could not find what I considered to be a solid lead on correcting the problem at first. I downloaded a different ROM, the teamEOS Droid DNA, same result. I searched more and seen in someones response, (unfortunately cant remember who), that they thought it had something to do with the Kernel. I downloaded JamieTheMorris's intelli plug kernel. When making a call the screen would turn off but, a press of the power button would make the screen turn on but, the screen would not respond to my touch. I tried using the recommended settings and that make my phone go haywire. So I wiped everything and downloaded Santod's NuSense SIX KitKat 6.0 and sometimes the screen cuts off when the call connects but, the power button makes the screen turn on and the phone responds to my touch.
I do not at all feel or claim that I have solved the problem of the replacement screen turning off when a call is connected but; due to the use Santod's ROM my phone functions and for now, that is enough for me.
If anyone has any more info on this problem, or is able to figure the problem please post below.
Replacement screen that I used - http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-HTC-Droid-DNA-Front-Panel-LCD-Touch-Glass-Digitizer-Screen-Assembly-OEM-/370828275337?pt=US_Cell_Phone_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item5657166e89
Since it has RED menu buttons, I think this the screen for butterfly, hence the possible difference in positioning. I am not sure, just my 2c.
Does it have Verizon or HTC logo?

It has a HTC logo at the top. I know it does not mean too much but; the listing says specifically Droid DNA Verizon, although I was questioning whether that was why the cable was not spot on.

Touchscreen bug reintroduced AGAIN on WHITE Z5 Compact, on MM update :(

So some of you with white Z5 compact phones might have had this touch sceen bug with repetitive key presses and unstable touch screen behaviour bug which was previously "fixed" by a software upgrade:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/10/21/white-xperia-z5-compact-touch-screen-fix-arriving-next-week/
Lo and behold. This bug is back in MM, and there is another guy in the thread which I can see also have the bug come back
It is not always there, but sometimes its just there. I dont know what triggers it. A restart seems to help until it comes back again.
For those of you not familiar with this bug, it usually shows by repetitive touches, and highly unstable touch screen.
For example when i press the key "s", it usually put in "sssssss" like i have pushed that key 5-6 times.
Also the bugs shows, when for example you are scrolling in facebook/internet, it will not let you scroll. Whenever you touch the screen, it will enter, whereever you lay your finger on screen.
Lastly it also shows by the screen becoming completely unresponsive when you press anywhere.
I have clean installed MM and restored my apps via Sony Backup/restore app.
I am so pissed how a phone color (white) can somehow decide the behavior of the phone touch screen, and I believe sony is hiding something.
In the beginning I was thinking that maybe they made different builds for the different Z5 colors, so they might not have included the "newest" touch screen drivers for at launch time for the white version.
But the same bug appearing AGAIN in MM i have a very hard time understanding that should be the case that it was a software bug. I believe there are some hardware bug, they have somehow omitted by a software circumvention, and they forgot to add it to the white version for the MM launch.
Personally I have always had a problem with the "return" key when the phone is placed. Patch or not, this button works once out of 10.
For information, I just bought this phone. I also think there is a hardware problem. This is average for a manufacturer like Sony. I thought for a moment it back in service but when I see the number of dissatisfied with the service Sony in France, I preferred to keep my phone in the hope that a solution comes a day. We have the right to expect in my opinion ...
I did clean install via flastool also and i have/had this problem. Yesterday i did software repair via pc companion and restores apps after that and so far problem has not occured.
I also made a repair with PC Companion but nothing changed.
So there are other people here with this annoying problem.
You all have a white xperia yes?
This bug is so annoying I feel sometimes like tossing the phone into a wall.
If there was an alternative to this phone in this form factor and specs, I would have bought it yesterday.
But unfortunately there isn't
It's a poor ground connection from the digitizer most likely. You can replicate this "bug" on any device with a bad USB charger. I had a charger that would cause my Nexus 7 to detect random touches.
The software fix was likely adjusting the voltage threshold for touch events to be considered actual presses. It was likely forgotten about when they updated and just needs to get readjusted again. Too bad we don't have the ability to adjust the threshold ourselves in developer options
That being said I have a white z5c and I've only had this "bug" happen once and I just chalked it up to me being plugged into the wall and didn't think much of it. I use my phone constantly too.

Interesting theory. Do you think it is likely that this issue only occurs for one phone color (WHITE), and then only for some whites.
The assembly line for the phones should more or less be the same, no mater the color.
I also have Sony Z5 compact white version which had the touch problem from start. Now after the Marshmallow update its back. As said above, it could happen while browsing (or on home screen) e.g. Entering links instead of scolling i.e. It triggers multi click. In these situations all menu keys will also be none responsive. Its starts acting normal again after a quick push of the power button, i.e. puttning the screen to sleep.
As a former developer for mobile software, both for apps and the android platform, i thinking i would agree with the above conclusion that the problem is hardware based, and not due to a difference in the delivery software version, as i was hopping. So the question is; will this always be a problem for these versions of Z5c white, i.e. they are forgotten in new builds?
Unfortunately I'm having the same problem with my white z5 compact...

it happens that for different colors are used different materials.. probably white ones have different properties..
i can confirm that using bad cable/chargers this kind of bug happens with every device, with random touches and impossible scrolling.. if you have a well-known bad adapter and you note no differences with your white z5c, that's definitively the answer..
i think sony should recall all white z5cs and replace them with newer or different release
What revision of compact Z5 are you? Personally I have a revision 3 (that is written on the box).
I also had a touch of problem before moving to the latest version of Android (6).
My girlfriend also bought white Z5 Compact and funny thing... I put the Panzer Glass on the screen and guess what? Sometimes she can't turn off the alarm clock in the morning and sometimes navigation buttons are not responding. I tried then without the screen and it works without a problem. I am not sure if this is a problem with Panzer glass or sony's bug.
I have Z5 and have no problems, but mine is black edition
Mine is z5c white version as well. The bug started again on MM
And the bug quite annoying.
I bought it on updated lollipop.
And never had this problem before.
This plus Bluetooth is really making me hold off on not moving up from .200 lol
Argh - just saw the visual representation of this bug:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/10/06/xperia-z5-compact-owners-reporting-touch-screen-problems/
and it sounds A LOT like the one from the OnePlus One (driver & firmware issue)
easy blame: Synaptics - fix your ****
Anyway:
try enabling the double-tap-to-wake if it's not already enabled, lock the screen - give it some time to settle (~ 30 seconds),
wake it up (double-tap) - do some stuff - disable the double-tap-to-wake and lock the screen again.
Unlock it via power button and see if that improved the "situation".
Sony recommended a few times to boot into Safe Mode,
does this Mode exist on Android Marshmallow ?
Does it make any change ?
Had this in Nougat is there a fix?
It feels like a software problem! You can try to reinstall the system!
First consider whether it is a system problem. You can refresh the system to see if it is back to normal. If it still does not, then you may need to update a new LCD screen. You can go online to find the repaired video as a reference. The witrigs repair video is doing great, you can check it out!

Getting data off an S6 Edge with a busted LCD

My wife dropped her S6 edge a few months back and broke the back glass. Everything worked fine, though, until a few days ago when the screen suddenly stopped working. The screen displays two columns of alternating gray lines if the power button is held down for a few seconds or if the home button is pressed; otherwise the buttons seem to be non-responsive. Also, the left-most LED is illuminated solid purple almost all the time. I brought it to a repair shop, and they said it was a broken LCD. (Not sure why the LED would stay illuminated then, but whatever.)
I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to get the data off the phone without dropping $300 to replace the LCD. It's not rooted, and USB debugging isn't enabled. Also, she already got a replacent phone and swapped out the SIM, for what that's worth. I'm also 90% sure she never created a Samsung account and, in any event, i think it would be moot since she's swapped phones, no? Basically, I only really care about the pictures of our kids, but she unfortunately didn't have Google photos sent to sync, either.
Additionally, neither Windows Explorer nor Samsung Smart Switch recognizes it when you plug it in. I've tried attaching it to both a mouse and a keyboard via OTG adaptor to try to unlock the pass code (numerical, not pattern), but it doesn't seem like that worked because nothing happened after doing that and then plugging it into my computer. I was going to try the trick of hooking it up to my TV to mirror the screen, but I've read that the S6 Edge doesn't support MHL, so that seems like a bust.
Any and all thoughts greatly appreciated.
