So January update is here!
The wait is over! You might have heard about all the controversy that Google Pixel`s December update sparked, dropped phone calls, bad reception, tons of issues fixed and another tons of new issues introduced.
Well, the wait is over - Google promised to deliver a fix to the fix and here it is the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro January update!
Let`s see how well they did!
Mod edit: YT link removed
How does it work for you? Telephony fixed, i.e. call reception, call handover and etc?
Sadly I live in a "none Pixel supported" country, so no support from the operators resulting into no 5G, no Carrier Aggregation, even no LTE+ (only LTE) and sadly no VoLTE and VoWiFi.
Glad this update smoothed things out, coming from the s20 it definitely felt a lot less smooth but 90hz on the pixel 4 felt very close to s20 in terms of smoothness.
Now with January we're back to on par with pixel 4 in smoothness.
I never had any signal issues so can't speak on that.
Me neither but I did not travel that much since I got it... else the January update is really really really smooth it just makes me crazy that my S21 Ultra ... is so far behind - it`s buttery smooth as well but occasional stutters just ruin the experience.
I really like the Pixel 6 and hope that Google can fix it - some of my friends that travel complained from phone calls dropping, seems that it can not handover from cell to cell when you are driving on a highway and etc...
I live in a none pixel supported country, so no support from operators, no VoLTE, no VoWiFi, no 5g and even 4G+ its kinda of sad.
All signal issues fixed for me! USA on Verizon.

For me too, T-Mobile in Germany.
Fingerprint reader works better after update.
Right now my only complaint with my P6 is the fingerprint reader. Indoors it works great, outdoors (especially in cold weather) it's pretty hit and miss.

Same, it's drastically better than the December "update".
I don't know if it's due to the Jan update or me disabling 2G on my phone. I have 5G at my home with mid to full signal. I've never had that before, not even a 5G signal to begin with. Only when I drove away from home, I'd get some 5G.
also, my fingerprint reader stayed the same. It might have gotten worse since it's getting really cold/dry here. So bad that I just took off my screen protector and going naked for now.
cheers
Have 2 carriers on my P6 - "FREE MOBILE" works 4/5g with hard SIM card & "SFR France" works 4/5g and VoWifi with eSIM.
Before Jan. updt, had almost generic issues with FREE Mobile on receipt and sometime on call, no issues noticed on SFR on both ways.
After Jan. updt looks OK !!!! So far so good
@derausgewanderte I have also disabled 2G but didn't noticed effect
Funny, while everybody talked about the December update issues i didn't have any issues with it.
Now with the January update I'm having random reboots..
My phone is stock without any modifications, i think I'm going to do a factory reset this weekend and hopefully it will be fixed.
I'm with you. Have had zero issues until the January update. Freezes. Battery has been bad. YouTube is killing my battery. I don't use it. Have background data off. Battery to restricted. Force stop. Cleared cache/data and it is always the top of the battery consumption.
Looking at this thread in the community forums it looks like for some people there are problems even after january update.
Very poor or no signal - Google Pixel Community
It is interesting that there are people who had the problem and january update did not fix these, people which started having problems after january update and people whose problems were fixed after january update. Go figure what exactly google are doing with the modem but obviously it needs more work. I personally never got the december update and did not have any problems with november one. Now after january update i am also ok but on LTE only as 5G is locked in my country. I also have turned off adaptive connectivity and do not have volte or vowifi enabled (again locked in my country).
My Pixel 6 is fresh off the truck and the January update was job one, so I can't compare to earlier problems. 4G and 5G seem fine. The fingerprint reader is definitely half-baked. I managed to get one thumb enrolled after many tries. It's letting me in though, and that's what matters. Battery life seems good, not 5a good but good enough.
Still have occasional random spontanious reboots occasionaly ;(

In my experience it only lets me make a purchase under $100 without unlocking the phone. Otherwise it asks for the pin on the payment terminal. If the phone is unlocked, I can spent as much as I want without a pin on the card terminal. And this is how it's been for me the entire time I've used google pay, for about 2 years

Compass is rubbish in Google Pixel 6. I compare compass from Huawei P30 even Sony Xperia ZX Premium.
They very stable and show same direction. But Pixel 6 is like lottery, not stable, changing direction.
Is my phone faulty?

Looks like, so far, Three are the only network not to have announced they are stocking the Nexus 6P.
I for one am hoping they are just delaying their announcement!
If anyone has any information regarding this matter, please post here.
Don't think three stocked the Nexus 6 at release did they?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Three did not stock the N6 so very doubtful they will do the 6P
I think a few places never stocked the 6. This time however, everyone except Three are stocking the 6P.
They can't be the only people not to negotiate a contract to sell the 6P, surely!
Seems that way. No plans as yet to sell it, and as such I'd imagine it won't work with VoLTE on Three either.
Annoying as I've ordered one and am on Three.

Not good, any more news on this??
No. I guess we can safely say VoLTE won't be possible on the 6P with Three. That is unless we get the ability to manually enter the relevant IMS settings (like APNs for data), in which case it should be possible.
I have heard rumours that the inTouch app may be updated to allow you to make calls over the app, just like you can use it for calling over Wi-Fi without 'proper' Voice over Wi-Fi support.
In this way, Three will then (apparently) give you access to the 800MHz LTE network (which is available in areas where there's no 3G to fall back to for voice) once you're registered and signed in.
That too could solve the problem, but it's a bit of a bodge and by no means going to happen for definite.

When I first ordered the 6P i went into a three store and asked about the VoLTE and they said they should support it.
Remember they dont brand/lock the phones they sell anymore. Can't remember if they put extra software on though.

They don't lock but they do brand. It isn't like the old days, with custom ring tones, colours, loads of extra apps (free trials of aps, or whatever) installed but it's still a custom ROM with settings unique to them, from APNs to the IMS settings needed for VoLTE (and Wi-Fi calling).
If you want to use VoLTE on Three today, or SuperVoice as they call it, you need to flash the Three ROM on your Galaxy S5, LG G4 or the other few devices given access - and requiring a software update.
Apple is the exception. These are never branded and the carrier settings are the same on EVERY single phone. I do wish Google would do something similar with regards to carrier settings, as then every phone on any network could be made to work properly with all the available features.
Given this is Xda, it's worth noting that there are sometimes other ways to get a generic phone to work with VoLTE but it's not something Joe Public would be able to do, or even know they could do. And Three stores have been saying some phones are able to work that can't (and never will, unless they do this inTouch update) as well as saying 4G 800 is a high priority, when the reality is that it's the lowest and you'll only ever use it when 3G isn't available.

Simple Mobile is telling me that my S9+ will not be compatible with their network changes on January 1st; my daughter's Moto G6 got the same message.
Does anyone know why? Is it because of their 5G network upgrade? And the S9+ can't handle it??
The message

A lot of companies are dropping 3g and I'm pissed too. Cricket don't support volte on byod. Which means my note 10 is useless once their switch over happens. And that's basically what they are saying. Is your device doesn't support volte only and or we can't make it work on yours. Even though I know it does. Will. And had worked on mine. This is in a nutshell
That is incredibly shady of them. I would drop them as a carrier, if it's an option. The official 3G shutdown isn't until 2023. AT&T did something similar, using a scare tactic and telling people their phones would stop working soon. The fine print however showed that "soon" meant February of 2023.

thanks guys. So, I see that I have some time for this change. Replacing the wife's S9+ is probably due since she's getting a lot of missed work calls. But I also have a Moto G6 for my daughter with Simple Mobile, and I'm not sure what to replace it with. The Moto G6 is a nice, small, and cheap phone for a 12 year-old. Do I need to look for phones that work with VOLTE for her replacement?

I already had the r15 sim seems to be working good. Dont know about older sims. Seen people was having problems with samsung 5g devices with older sims.
R15 sim is needed for voice to connect, in nr only mode I get no voice service with the old sim
5G NR working here with .39 and R15 sim. Well, I should say 5G NR data is working. When set to NR only in #*#*4636#*#* and wifi off, I'm not able to make voice calls. (Before .39 and R15 SIm, setting it to NR only resulted in zero service. So 5G NR is definitely working!)
It's not the new R15 sim causing the problem. Without the R15 sim, one can't even connect to SA 5G for data.
Is that just me or is that the same for everyone? Does Vo5GNR not exist yet? Or only in some areas?
Edit: According to this: https://www.telecompetitor.com/understanding-t-mobile-standalone-5g-technology-what-is-vonr-vinr/
it says TMobile does support VoNR but in addition, supports "the first low-band standalone (SA) 5G voice call using evolved packet system (EPS) fallback to VoLTE". Is it possible they haven't deployed VoNR yet? Can someone set to NR only with wiif off and try making a call?
edit2: After some further reading, the X55 modem doesn't support VoNR. The upcoming X60 will. So there isn't a single phone on the market currently that supports VoNR. I know in about phone it shows NR for voice and data, but that's not accurate. https://www.androidauthority.com/qualcomm-snapdragon-x60-5g-1084417/ https://www.qualcomm.com/news/relea...hird-generation-5g-modem-rf-system-enhance-5g
However, I'd still like someone to confirm my findings.
Also probably the reason the NR only mode is hidden in the debug menu instead of a regular setting.
Speedtest results in NR only mode are disappointing slow. Slower than NSA mode. And NSA is slower than plain old LTE at my house, which has been pretty consistent since I bought this phone.
On the plus side, LTE service in my area has actually gotten faster over the 6 months I've had this phone, so that's nice.

Speed results at my home: LTE is approx 75/12mbps constant
NSA 5G low-band: is approx 120/20 (but can drop to 10/5 at times, even before SA mode became available)
SA 5G low-band: approx 5/5mbps
If set to auto settings, it'll stay on 5G NSA 95% of the time. SA 5G definitely isn't ready for primetime yet lol.
Future 5G low-band updates (currently in progress across the US) and especially mid-band (n41, 2500MHz) availability will greatly increase speeds to 300+mbps (already available in 200+ cities and T-Mobile says 1000+ cities by end of 2020 -- most are small cities in only a handful of states as of now). Haven't had a chance to test it personally.
I ran a bunch of speedtests today, and discovered that 5G NSA was performing better than ever (even faster than plain LTE) while 5G SA was extremely disappointing.
Anyone found a hidden setting or app that can _disable_ NR SA?
The speedtests results tell me I'm better off without it for the time being, at least until TMobile fine tunes and works out the initial rollout kinks.

Don't think you can disable SA 5G, but my phone stays on NSA 5G the vast majority of the time. I'm assuming TMobile set it that way on purpose knowing that their 5G SA network is very slow at the moment.
Is there a manual way to install this? I've got an unlocked bootloader, I was rooted but I couldn't get this update to install, I keep getting "Installation problem" and no real details. So I restored my original boot.img which I'd backed up. So now my phone isn't rooted and yet I'm still encountering the same exact error. The only thing I can think of is the unlocked bootloader, which sucks. I'll have to jump through some serious hoops to go back to 100% stock (because the userdata will be lost). Hoping somebody has found a way to just manually flash this somehow.

No way to manually flash any OTA or updates on this phone. Either your boot partition isn't stock, your recovery partition isn't stock, your reserve partition is missing or is the wrong version (if you never or incorrectly restored it after you first unlocked the bootloader), or any other system partition (system, vendor, product, odm -- all which are contained in super.img thanks to Android 10) isn't stock. If it's boot or recovery or reserve you can fix. If it's anything else, your only option is to run the latest MSM tool to get back to stock (wiping all data in the process), followed by unlocking again, running the correct version of the tool to restore reserve.img, and go from there.
If you simply unlocked the bootloader and never read the thread about restoring your reserve partition, that's likely your problem since you already restored boot to stock. And an easy fix.
And I can't say this enough, BACK UP YOUR PERSIST PARTITION NOW! It's unique to your specific phone and SHOULD never ever be altered in any way. OTAs don't touch it. It won't prevent you from taking OTAs if you corrupt it, which is very likely on this phone sooner or later with the bootloader unlocked, but you will wind up with a broken fingerprint sensor/reader (which if you are lucky can be fixed yourself without RMA, but it's much, much easier just to make a backup to begin with).
Edit: The 10.0.39 version of the MSM tool came out, so you can use that to restore/update, but you'll lose all data in the process, and have to unlock the bootloader again and then restore/fix your reserve partition (so that future OTA updates will work) again.

There is a bug opened here https://issuetracker.google.com/u/1/issues/210484323
I getting the same also it goes dead for like a few minutes every so often
3 times in like 45 minutes for me .. so is the best to roll back glad they have that website flash andriod web
Just spoke to Google chat agent and literally she had no clue. Asked if I contacted my sim provider to check if that's not them. Then suggested sending it under warranty oh dear.
Of course she has no clue.. she's the lowest person on the totem pole, trained to answer questions like "where does my SIM card go in?"
If people want to get Google's attention go to the link @pemz82 provided https://issuetracker.google.com/u/1/issues/210484323 and star the issue.
Has anyone figured out a common denominator? Build version, carrier, etc? Or is it just the luck of the draw?
iomma try flash back the old radio
Yeah something is major wrong here.. They need to fix this really fast.
For me this issue started 10 days before the update. all of a sudden I had drops and my screen off drain jumped from 0.4 to 1.5. this leads me to believe that the problem isn't on the update but rather on a play store package. I think this only happens to people with dual sim or maybe users that only use esim.
This issue is definately caused by the December update (or a part of it).
I received the update and instantly noticed that I no longer had signal while indoors at my home. My wife also had a Pixel 6 (on the same network both using a physical SIM) and has remained on the November build. Her signal has remained fine.
for me the same thing after the renovation in the buildings every now and then exclamation mark and no possibility of a phone call
For me it's noticeable better today. Had no signal at all at home and today is much better. At the moment in have 3/4bar
...
I just saw a potential fix posted on reddit (Credit: MissAnneThrowpe)

I'm not surprised. There is no reason for that to work seeing it's a Google network/radio issue not a sim manager app issue. I'm always leery trying those homemade fixes that someone tried out on a friends phone. Also I don't believe it's the December update since it was happening on the November update as well, at least for me. The Verizon update page doesn't even have the Dec patch listed. I wonder if any carrier has jumped on the bandwagon or they held off, which is why no one is getting an OTA on Vzw or Att from what I can tell.

It's definitely the December update. I'm the OP of the https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/210484323
Both me and my wife have Pixel 6, same operator. I stupidly sideloaded the A1 OTA (well you know, I have the flashing fever ), and after reboot I don't have network connectivity in the house (or I have low signal near the window). Even outside, sometimes I have no signal, while my wife's P6 on November patch has full signal most of the time.
No to be full of sh##, I decided to took a picture of both phones, side by side. Left one is mine, on dec update.

Hi, I am new to Sony family and bought used III which mightve been a Mistake.
I never see the signal having all bars full. It also reports values around 100dbm.
I have not been making calls really but I can see the reception is worse than with my old Xiaomi 9, same for 4g. Sometimes it drops and only restart fixes it.
Running dualsim, different carriers. Did network config restarts etc.
Lets assume it is sw problem. Could it be bad non-eu stock rom? How do I check?
I might immediatelly go with custom rom, maybe on android 12 just to see if it works better. Any suggestions? I just dont think factory reset or flashing stock is gonna fix it easily and I am open to experiments as long as the system and mainly signal reception is stable because next stop is trashbin really. The phone is overall great, I just did not expect phones having such problems nowadays.
I've seen the same, especially if I go underground for a few minutes - the phone can't reconnect unless I restart it or switch on and off the airplane mode.
But apart from that I have a pretty stable connection, no matter what the bars show.
My uneducated guess is power savings affect the signal strenght.
Never had problems during calls, no matter if driving or stationary

As A current Metro by T-mobile sales rep, and self proclaimed cell phone guru, some carriers require a phone to be registered on your account for it to fully work, even if the phone on paper has all the supported bands of said carrier. so this could be the problem, and if it's a software problem you can simply reinstall the correct firmware for your region and device and see if that fixes the issue, you could also try a different region but same device model number...

I have not really tested it much in such environment like underground. The signal mostly stays ok, not full at all but the connection works tho. I had only like 2-3 restarts/week due to connection reporting only EDGE available (still I couldnt browse anything) and both sim signals showed a problem (exlamation mark), I think it could have been caused by worse reception conditions and it eventually stopped working at all.

I dont see registration being a requirement here in EU. These are prepaid simcards, no binding to a device, no contract and such.
I dont know if its software problem. After little bit of Googling I came to a conclusion that Sony does indeed have problem with signal reception no matter what is the cause. To me it seems it could be SW related. Question is if flashing stock rom is the way to go or maybe using a custom rom as daily driver?

I don't see registration being a requirement here in EU. These are prepaid simcards, no binding to a device, no contract and such.
I don't know if its software problem. After little bit of Googling I came to a conclusion that Sony does indeed have problem with signal reception no matter what is the cause. To me it seems it could be SW related. Question is if flashing stock rom is the way to go or maybe using a custom rom as daily driver?

In the states Metro by T-Mobile is a prepaid company that uses T-Mobile's network, but they specifically require your current device to be on your account to make sure they can give you the correct info on why your phone isn't working correctly. And some times to send the correct configuration file to your device. But in your specific case i would say go the firmware route and see if that fixes it before calling the carrier to see if there's a config file or something similar they need to send.

Thanks for the explanation. I chose the FW route, testing AlphaDroid as of now. So far so good. Reception already looks better so I will stick to this rom for now and see how it performs.

Just a tip, you might wanna force 4G even on custom ROMs, I am running same config as you double sim and diff carriers but i get better result by forcing LTE Only on my main data SIM.

I have a quick update for you regarding my devices connectivity problems
I reflashed the latest global firmware, this overrides the modem 5g configs that you find on all of the 5g enabling guides.
immediately my reception AND my phone switching between 3G, 4g 4g+ etc was better. Im not saying im magically getting full bars, but its improved substantially on top of switching between networks when travelling etc is instantly now. Instead of me having to enable flight mode to reset my network every time.
i will try flash a custom rom and see if the reception stays fine
only had problems after trying to enable 5g and follow the guides.
edit: spelling

Cool, thanks for the info. What is the version of that global fw?
I had only one network disconnect on AlphaDroid but it managed to fix itself within minutes. Still the display seems bit irresponsive to touches at times, baterry drain is not the best and also call quality does not seem to be the best. So I am considering switching to global or maybe different custom. Ofc it could be just my device.

You should start using 120Hz if it feels slow (go into QS settings and get the refresh rate toggle from there), also enable High polling rate from Settings > Display for better responsiveness, also if you're rooted/using Shizuku you should try https://github.com/kyujin-cho/pixel-volte-patch/releases it may unlock some SIM options that may improve your call quality.

6.1.2.A.0.447 was what I upgraded too
Honestly, I don’t have a single practical use case for my phone where i need 5g enabled, so it’s really not a deal breaker for me to not have that enabled. 4g+ is still pretty quick especially for my use case. If you want volte & vowifi I recommend magisk + zygisk so you can use banking apps. Works well for me and call quality is fantastic
edit: I think I should note i did a full clean flash, flashing all and wiping all data on the phone. It’s been a few days and signal noticeably better.
edit 2: spelling (damn autocorrect)
