The news on the Wi-Fi Krack Attack says it was discovered a few months ago, but an Android patch won't come until November 2017 security update?
So the V30 is launching with this huge Wi-Fi security vulnerability, probably not to be patched for several months or more (if ever)?
That might be enough to give many potential buyers pause, waiting on the patch. If so, discounts might ramp sooner and steeper.
Anybody have any info to offer regarding V30 and Krack Attack?
TIA...
Its a lot more hype and hysteria than anything .... IMO
Unless you go door to door visiting wifi services, it's nothing to lose sleep over.

Good grief dude. This vulnerability exists on every single phone that's got Android 6 or higher (plus just about every device, not even just phones) which means every single phone launched in the past two years. So if you bought an Android phone since then (or anything that connects to wifi for that matter), you're already vulnerable and have been for a while. I'll reiterate, every device that connects via wifi is vulnerable. All of them.
But there's really great news. The V30. It's a cellphone. It has cellular data radios built in. In fact, my data speeds across my cell network are faster than across any wifi point I connect to. Which is to say, I have zero reason to connect my phone to a wifi point.
If you are using a laptop, desktop, or whatever, you have more reason to worry about those.

Thanks for more "ready-fire-aim" snark, CHH2.
The point is this: Since we all know that most existing Android phones are vulnerable to Krack, it might occur to (some of) us that we should look to our next new phone to NOT have this vulnerability.
Especially given the abysmal (to nonexistent) performance of security updates provision for most phones after the sale. (Except for Apple, Google, Samsung... am I missing any? LG sux at this too, correct?)
And further, because rooting makes OTAs (including those to get security patches) a time-consuming hassle with added risk, after the sale.
Thanks in advance to any who can offer info about the original question.

Maybe. Unless there are "script kiddy" youth nearby with too much idle time and parents buying them too many toys, who like to hack for entertainment.
I think these responses are instructive, about the sort of blasé attitude towards SW/HW faults in general, and security in particular, that lead to nontrivial system flaws and security vulnerabilities like this in the first place.
Also, note that it took a researcher in Belgium, not the US, to discover this defect. Coincidence? (Let's dispense with cute euphemisms like "bug", and call them what they are: Faults, and defects.)
Still hoping for useful info about the issue itself. (How many "good grief"s does it take?

Hey! Look at this! Both my V20 and V30 have the BlueBorne patch! So, no, they do not suck at this. And that's even having to go through the carrier gateway too. And yes, I already offered to information about the original question but just for giggles....

Risking a hand slap from a mod, you're just an attention whore. Just Google the information like the rest of us did and you'll see why we're all "blase". And what exactly are you trying to infer that it took Belgians to discover this defect? There are labs, developers, companies, and testers around the world constantly poking and prodding at this stuff looking for the next hole because there will always be a next hole. Just like your home, internet security is an illusion, especially when you are connecting to wi-fi. With or without this attack, wi-fi is problematic. And that's why some of us aren't allowed to connect our work computers to wi-fi networks unless they are known entities.
You're too busy running around exclaiming the sky is falling while most of us already know not to stand under certain parts of the sky because that's not the sky falling, that's bird droppings.
Oh, and faults and defects are called bugs in software. That's just how we do things on the software side of things. (And yes, I deal with software and hardware on a daily basis for work.)
I think I understand.
The V30 will have this defect (security vulnerability affecting all wifi) for a lonnng time after launch. Asking about the vulnerability in an XDA forum brings "good grief" and hostile ad hominem in response, rather than relevant info about the issue itself. Textbook hubristic defensiveness.
Maybe the hubristic culture that tries to make everyone think SW defects and security vulnerabilities are OK, is getting a boost from the string of massive security breaches recently, like Equifax and OPM. Who cares about security and privacy, when everything is pwned anyway, right? Just go with the flow, don't even try to secure anything anymore.
Thanks for the information.

Way to make up what you want to read. Like I said, LG update the V20 and V30 for the BlueBorne attack pretty quickly. I suspect that as soon as Android is patched for this, it'll filter down pretty quickly. In the meantime, you can just wear a tinfoil hat to keep the bad rays out. All manufacturers will be working on this and getting fixes out ASAP. After that, it'll be on to the next bug. Because that's how things are in the software world.

Agreed.
My 2014 Moto XT1225 -- rooted with Nougat custom ROM -- has BlueBorne patch while Motorola couldn't care less about a 3 year old phone that never got anything past Marshmallow. And next month, when Google releases the security patch for this Krack Attack, I'll be patched for that too!
This is why rooting and custom ROMs will ALWAYS give you the latest security patches, and you don't have to depend on the kindness of OEMs who might take 3 or 4 months to push out something even if you do have "new" device that still gets updates.
If someone if suggesting to skip the LG V30 because of this, that's really silly.
1) LG will most certainly patch it. Will just take some time. Rooting and custom ROMs are the way to go. You can even get OTA updates with most ROMs nowadays.
2) What happens when the "next big thing" hits? Is that person going to always sell their phone every time out of fear?
^Exactly
Oh look! Someone finally put together an article about why this is such a Chicken Little issue! You'll note that not even the Pixels have the fix and it doesn't really matter.

Well, for being one of the first to roll out updates, LG is dropping the ball.
OnePlus and Nokia are rolling out updates.
Essential and Samsung has betas
And LG has said nothing. Continuing disappointment.
That's what I got from LG via email:
"Thank you for contacting LG Customer Service in regards to your LG G6 phone.*
I have taken a look into your query and as of yet, we currently do not have any time frames or exact dates for when Android 8.0 will be released. We are testing on older models to see if it is compatable. However we have no information to give at this current point in time.*
I know this probably was not the answer you were expecting but as soon as we have any details regarding this, we will be more than happy to inform you!*"

Seems like this is the generic answer they provide to anyone who asks about the Oreo update
Exactly the same answer was sent to another user (ant78) from the LG V30 forum. I wouldn't be relaying on Customer Service of any mobile manufacturer... Similar type of answers I was getting back in the days when I had Samsung Galaxy S2. Turned out that two days later I got an update, where Customer Service had no specified date for the update
btw. Korean LG V30 got the Oreo update today
Well, LG just released the Oreo beta for the V30 and V30+ in Korea, and has previously said the final version will come in December, so hopefully that's good news for the G6 getting the update in a timely manner

It depends on what the timely manner means
Some of the sources like Androidauthority mentioned about having Oreo on G6 around October/November. It's almost the end of November and I doubt we'll see the update anytime soon

If you're phone is carrier locked, there is no warranty you will receive Oreo. For example Videotron in Canada are used to block updates.

Seriously?!?
This kind of practice should be denied! I think it's already a big mess with all those carriers and manufacturers who can't keep up with updating phones to the latest versions of Android. And I'm not saying about every device, but even flagship phones... which is a joke.
Ok I understand that it requires a lot of work (sometimes) to port, test and test new Android version, but I can't understand how come some of the phones are not getting security patches. LG seems to be a good example of this mess... H870 is stuck on July security update and we are almost at the end of the year
I wish all the phones were getting as quickly as Nexus/Pixels are getting... I wish I wish I wish...
The 'porting and testing' of a new android version by a carrier is, more often than not, just a case of adding some unwanted apps to the system.
The excuse of thorough testing is just an excuse for 'can't be bothered' just yet.

I totally agree with you. Updating software on already sold phones will not bring carriers new money, so not point in investing time and money into that. It's better to come up with new commercials, so people will buy more units.
In my opinion same story holds for the manufacturers who need to/want to grab as many users as they can, hence they put most of the effort into developing new models.
Was hoping to receive the update before Nov. ended but here we are. I at least hope something does come...
I'd be really freaking excited if the update drops this month.
Update 19 December 2017:
I've just updated through LG Bridge. I have come to following conclusions:
- My data, media and apps still exist. Nothing deleted
- Bridge will download massive 3GB of firmware
- Bridge didn't like my wifi so I used my neighbor wifi that downloaded the firmware successfully. However I don't know why I got server error at my own wifi
- I can't see any changes. Just a november patch which is still better than July
So I got this response from LG:
This is a staff of LG Product Security Response Team(LG PSRT).
First of all, we apologize for late security patch.
As I know, the latest version (for European) is also July.
According to our dedicated team, there will be a security patch for your LG G6 H870 within the end of December.
Thanks for your patience.
Regards,
LG PSRT
What does that even mean? Which security patch will we receive? Any mention of Android 8?
Security patch: August

Yeah, the LG updates is kinda a joke. The hardware is good and all, but we're still running the same 7.0 that it was launched with some 9 months ago. I'm just waiting for stable LOS.
As I said, very nice! I'd actually been missing those icons.
Would you consider making a version with the Nexus grey background instead of all black as well? While keeping the icons and the accent color.
Oh, and if you do, I wouldn't mind seeing a slight background change for the separator row in the settings. Just like the default white theme handles it, but in a dark grey of course.

Nordic LG G6 updates
Well I just asked LG Finnish customer service why the security updates are still at july 1st on my LG G6 that I bought a week ago. My 2+ years old phone I switched from had newer security updates.
First response was basically "unfortunately we dont know this as Google is responsible for the updates... Please inquire Google about this."
When I complained about this and pointed them to LG's own website at (cannot post links yet)
https lgsecurity.lge.com/security_updates.html
I got a snarky reply saying that as I can probably read from the page the updates are irregular at some regions etc.
And that getting updates in Finland means all the Nordic countries and their operators have to test the update first before its released here.
They said an update is coming, but did not specify "which" update. Blah. Not very good customer service either.

Bad choice they are just as bad if not worse than LG.
Hello, since Firmware Finder cannot enforce updates anymore, is there any alternative that does not require root? Honor really sucks at delivering updates, in FF I can see version 8.1.0.143 while I'm still on 131, this was always a pain in the ass for Honor devices but previously I always thought "who cares, I can force it via FF", well now I do care and this will be my last Honor device if I can't get the updates to work.
Thanks for any advice.

I'm sorry but if someone like Apple were to announce an iOS update for a specific day, you would expect it to be available on that day and it most likely would be. Honor told us that the update would be on August 3rd for the EU, yet here I am 3 days later in the UK unable to see 143/145. This would be relatively fine, if they hadn't made several posts on their Twitter accounts saying things like "update now!" and "have you updated yet?", and also made a competition on this very forum with a 10 day deadline, meaning if someone like me wanted to enter they would be 3 days behind anyone else already.

Sorry what? "certified by Google"? If the update has already come out in other regions/countries then surely it's already good to go, and the blame rests on Huawei/Honor for not pushing it to all the relevant regions/devices (which I'm sure they're able to do without doing it in waves, otherwise they wouldn't be telling everyone it's available now...)

Certification goes by country my friend. Thats the main reason why it goes in waves. If you are so much in rush you can use no check recovery and then you will see its not certified by Google . So yes its Google to blame because huawei have the update ready.

Really? It was my understanding that not being "certified by Google" was something that stopped your specific device from being updated, and that each manufacturer organised their own OTA updates (to me it doesn't make much sense for Google to be certifying Huawei, Samsung, etc. updates, as surely those companies have their own teams to test this stuff?).
Even so, I spoke with Honor customer service earlier today and all "Shane" could tell me was to "hold on". He even said he agreed that it's a bit silly for Honor to tell everyone it's available when really it isn't, but that there's nothing else they can do

Its not about huawei. Its about google security. Having or not their own team to test things doesnt mean they have access to google suite. Certification grants you access to google play, google pay and certain banking apps. If google did not check the updates for certain bugs, hacks etc then the update will stay on hold and as i said from country to country banking systems, telecommunication security systems are different.
Little miss leading social media , yes gpu boost is rolling out in certain regions this is normal practice for honor again it's region based batches at a time , the UK is always the last to get it , honor phones are not like say a OnePlus global device were as soon as a update rolls say in Canada first, you can set a VPN to Canada and download it even though your region hasn't got update yet , that would be nice but honor phones have tons of different region build numbers so unfortunately it's a waiting game for us in UK , I applied for the gpu boost beta and that wasn't being announced till 13th and haven't heard a thing since [emoji848]

Anybody think we'll get some kind of update pushed out allowing us to unlock our bootloader now that lg wont be making phones anymore?
I'm honestly surprised no one has chimed in. At all. These are some great phones. Being able to root and customize would make this phone a ton better. But I don't think lg cares at all.
I wouldn't count on it, personally. I'm frankly surprised that they've committed to 2-3 major OS upgrades (or as many years of support) for their post-2019 flagships as is, like our V60. I think that, beyond I suppose a renewed focus on their software update department, they're just going to completely wash their hands with mobile. And I still think they'll ultimately fail us on that promise of 2 to 3 years of software support. With no more active R&D and development on new devices and their software, we can probably completely rule out refreshed UIs and just expect bi-monthly security updates, maybe Android 12 on our V60s, and perhaps Android 13 on the Wings and Velvets. If that. I'm still extremely skeptical.
Edit - Edited to fix the supposed final Android versions for the V60s, Velvets, Wings, etc.

We do hace android 11 for V60, at least TMobile model. I wouldnt bet on A12 though. They should release bootloader code and what not though so we can at least get a bootloader unlock and aim for custom roms and such. Just because there backing out of the smartphone business now dosent mean there isnt a chance for comeback later. If they just screw everyone completely right now there not only ruining chances of a future comeback but also ruining there already bad name.

Yeah, I'm on AT&T and got A11 a couple of updates back. I too would be shocked to get A12 as well, though it sounds like they're at least planning on supporting the V60 that long. They have no real interest in catering to folks who jailbreak or root, as that makes up an infinitesimally small part of their potential demographic. In other words, catering to folks like us that post to forums like this isn't going to be any kind of factor for them in the short-term or long-term future, IMO. We are not the audience that makes or breaks their mobile business, and we never will be. As for the post you quoted, I meant to say "maybe Android 12 on our V60s, and Android 13 on the Velvets and Wings." (stress on the "maybe). I'll fix that post.
I would love to see it, but I will not hold my breath. Would provide a great deal of goodwill toward the company.
