General 1 mark IV rumor - Sony Xperia 1 IV

Hi,
there is a rumor saying there will be no charger added inside the box of mark IV while the price will be higher at the same price.
Is sony kidding me?
I am avoiding it if there will be no charger...
If I will be selling mark III the person who will buy it will want to have charger too.
Price of mark 3 was already too high in comparison to what it offers, support it receives and software.
I expect mark IV to be cheaper.
There are devices of mark 3 power 50% - 70% cheaper.

Feels like the Mark III series is dumped before it's even working reasonably well. I wouldn't touch another Sony phone if this is how their product support goes.
The Mark III is new and I want a 3rd party OS already.

Indeed, sony software support or division in general is worst from every manufacturer. They do not spend a penny on a software once device is released.
Since they do not provide any cooling solution to cpu (laughable considering the price) and in case device turns to burn out the only thing they do is to reduce the clocks to throttle it and tat's it. Any invest at all they provide is in case some must have feature like unlocking is not working due to crappy cheap fingerprint scanner. These are the only cases they do anything with soft.
As said. This is unacceptable at this price.
And still they want to increase it for the same + remove charger?

1 III is one of a kind. No other android phone is on the same page with it in terms of performance.

Stop crying like babies. There'll be charger in the box (45w). And do not forget that it'll pack Sony's best 40 and 50mp cameras on the back with the latest 8 gen 1 + proc. and so on . And the quality worths a bit of extra for me. My xz premium and z3 still work without any errors, freezes or anything while my friends' other ios and android phones don't work right anymore, drain their batteries, random restarts and freezes etc etc..

All my old lcd xperias had problems with yellowish tint over time. That was because of the glue used.
For sony mounting new cameras does not make sense. Result is still the same: mediocre. Apple, shamesung , pixels or huawei are always taking better shots, creating better videos. Mark 3 does not even have night mode and you cannot record 4k 60fps videos in main camera. Only in crappy cinema mode lol! And no 21:9 pics hence no sense of using such screen dimensions other than cutting the costs. So called camera phone and it doesn't have dedicated album app since they removed sony album app and replaced it with stock google crap. Again to cut the costs.
Besides they only advertise camera camera camera, seems they do not have anything else to market. I do not know anyone who still believes in their marketing camera bull. Since years they are claiming they now deliver best camera and what? Always far from competition... Apart from camera they are very weak in terms of software, I would say they almost abandoned providing new features, improving what is in phone or adding new functions or apps. They suffer in terms of soft a lot.
When it comes to charger they already removed it from 10 mark III...

Not to mention nearly all of those manufacturers use Sony's stuff. Night mode is an unnatural mode, I don't even need it. Photographers tested it and said it really is the best camera phone, you just have to know what to do and how. That's terrible, you have to open the cinema pro for 4k 60fps -.-' I have Sony Album app btw. And let's put an end to this argue, if you don't like Sony then don't buy it and leave the forum I don't know what did you do to your phones, I've never had yellow tint on any of my Sony phones. My old Xperia Ion still works flawlessly too, but it's not mine anymore. It's my friend's second phone for his other sim card. Stepfather's Xperia Z has no problems at all.

Would like too see what would those other manufacturers do if Sony wouldn't sell them cameras anymore

No way that Xperia 1 IV that will be any cheaper. Quite opposite scenario is more likely - at least $1300 or even more. Sony never went cheap with their products.

Buy it from other manufacturers? Like samsung?
Don't you have any imagination? Use your brain.
Besides it's not only about hardware, there are plenty of reviews and posts confirming aony takes worse pictures than other brands, especially in auto mode and dark conditions.
And yes, other brands using sony sensors stoll does way better than sony due to better software. And that's a fact confirmed by many specialists who compared camera samples.

Fake waterproof xD I always used them in extreme conditions. Never had any water damage. Those who had problems maybe forgot to mention that they broke their screen or something and took it to a little shop somewhere to replace it, but they didn't use the oem parts and glue. Once I ran into this with my Z3, I broke the screen because I accidentally dropped it from a ladder. I was already out of guarantee time so I went to find a shop to replace it. They said they use oem screen and glue but I've noticed after the replace that something isn't right, so I opened the Aida64 and the screen wasn't 1080p, but 720p. I went back for compensation, they didn't accept it. I took the effort and they had to close their shops not long after.

Mr specialist. Samsung also buys from Sony Iphone uses Sony sensors. Xiaomi uses Sony sensors. Everyone's using their sensors Take a look at pro photographer's reviews on the YouTube. They showed what it's capable of. Don't blame Sony that you can't use a pro camera device you said "don't tell me what to do" but maan, if you don't like Sony why are you here?!?!

Yeah, I'm crying uh-huh who's here again to say something nonsense?! You can complain, but the only ones who got the phones so far is testers. Sony still says that they'll ship it with fast chargers. Okay, they didn't use those big mp cameras , even if they could beat the s*#+ out of other manufacturers with them. Wondering why they don't want to do that... But have to mention there that those Photographers who got their own Xperia IV to test it in real life conditions, they were really impressed by this phone, just like they were with 1 III. If you want to complain then complain, if you're not satisfied with what Sony offer, then leave the forum and buy something else. Btw if they do not include a charger, then what?! Who does nowadays?! Idk about you, but I don't really care about these little things

Hi,
My Xperia 1IV just came few days ago.
Paid 6500 PLN with VAT (23%).WH1000XM4 were included (1300PLN incl tax).
As I was planning on buying those headphones anyway for my wife, Xperia price was very attractive for me.
6500PLN is about 1400EUR. But 5200PLN is only 1100EUR.
No charger in the box (I don't worry, because I have more than enough).
Sony camera needs user knowledge to make good shots. And then it's better than any other phone in most circumstances.
It's a weird phone, with really strange design choices in many places. But it's not "bad".
I chose it over S22 Ultra. Specifically because it's a divergent design.

How is cellular network compatibility? I just spent a few days without service because the US model 1 III doesn't support domestic roaming on smaller carriers. Despite all the claimed LTE and NR bands, it's no more compatible than a cheap Chinese market phone. I don't know why they even bothered.

So I decided to buy a one plus one, I'll still keep my z2 for sure and decide which is better suited for me

dont have huge flaws nor pros
unlike xperias with their damn heating issues or manufacturing
one+one as far as ive experianced are flawless
In pretty excited to get it to be honest. The camera looks amazing and they said that when android L comes out they'll have a stable version for the opo within 90 unlike Sony who don't say anything

There are a lot of problems with the OPO. I have already purchased 5 of them, and I don't have one left.
-All 5 had a terrible yellow band at the bottom of the screen.
-Half of them had touchscreen problems (something to do with poor grounding, so when placed on a conductive material the phones touchscreen malfunctions).
-A couple of them came with chipped and nicked bezels.
-All of them had extremely low call volume with both earpiece and speakerphone
-Back Sandstone cover inconsistent between devices, scratches and chips so easily.
Regarding the 90 update policy: Please keep in mind they are running CyanogenMod, which you can run on your Z2, and which will likely be out with Android L sooner than 90 days. You can't compare a CyanogenMod ROM release to an Xperia ROM release.
Be careful because I tried to RMA all of my devices for one or more of the problems listed above, and it took near two weeks to even get a reply. After another week of dialogue they declined all of my RMA's. I have since sold the phones at a loss and I will never deal with them again.
I can safely say that the camera on the Z2 is far superior to the OPO's from the pictures I've take with both devices.
Lastly, there are two speakers on the OPO like most modern phones, however their speakers are MONO and not STEREO.

Wow, bro. Whomever comes to me and says One Plus One is the best smartphone so far, I'll show them this post. I was starting to think if this One Plus One is better than my beloved Sony Xperia Z2, aswell. Now after reading this post, I'm relieved.
And yeah, they're using CyanogedMod, we're using our own awesome ROM specially engineered by Sony. So this means when our Android L version comes out, it'll surely beat the hell out of their Android L version ROM.

Yeah do some research before you buy it, the moderators on the OP forum are doing their best to bury the "problem" threads. It's sad, I posted multiple threads to create awareness about the problems with my phones, and I was banned from the forum for "spreading conspiracy"!
A co-worker of mine just sold off his OPO and stuck with his Samsung phone instead
The Back sandstone cover or whatever it's referred to is definitely a turn-off on that phone. It already had slight wear/chipping on the corners from being placed in the packaging- a big indication that the back will wear out over time and look awful without a case. Before even powering it on, he opted to sell it off and get his money back.
Have no issues with my Z2 here, overheating or build quality

My Z2 has been fantastic thus far as well. I tried five times with five brand new OPO's and was completely unsatisfied every time.
I got both and I dunno what you guys are on about?
I got a find 7a aside from my z2. The find 7a in my country comes with a carbon fiber back plate. The phone feels rock solid, there are no chips or dings and the screen is brilliant! Personally I use the OPPO more than my Z2.one awesome phone

I've had 5 Opo's to date and still have one, the rest were gifts to others. I have had no issues that required RMA. Yellowing issue at bottom of the screen: not everyone phone has and has been resolved with updates. Low call volume: until recently, has been an issue with every official CM ROM. Recent software updates have cured this. Touchscreen issues: again, not on everyone and they have been remedied as well. In all of the Opo's I have owned the back cover has been the same, I have not had a problem with that. Why would someone want an Opo over a Z2? Easy, $$$. The Opo costs $363 brand new, shipped. Considerably less than an also brand new Z2. Also, thee customization options are what make the Opo amazing. The camera is indeed better on the Z2, appreciably so. However, again, with recent software updates the Opo's camera is very good and certainly capable of meeting and exceeding most peoples needs. I own both phones and don't have a favorite necessarily because while I can say the Z2 is the better overall phone I do know it's 1. subjective and 2. comes at a substantial cost increase over the Opo. Every manufacturer ships phones worthy of RMA repairs, but Opo is the only company smart/dumb enough to create a forum before the phone was even out giving people time to fester, stew over and discuss said issues after waiting weeks for their phone.
I own a OnePlus. It's sitting beside me collecting dust. It's garbage. Cheap hardware, covered up by cm work arounds to create an Illusion of a high end device. Too many bugs, horrible customer service, and no transparency from the company. They lie, and mislead their customers. They bury any sort of negativity in their forums regardless of validity. I will never buy any OnePlus phone ever. I'm just lucky I won this piece of crap sitting beside me instead of investing any money into it. That company will most likely fail anyways.

I haven't had the chance to try the one plus one, but when it first came out I was really pumped! But now that I got the Z2, I haven't thought about it twice. But I am trying to figure out if I'm having a problem or not with my device... The sound in call sounds tinny and noisy... But not via loudspeaker. Only in call via the internal speaker... Hopefully I can fix it. Other than that, what a wonderful phone
I purchased a One plus one and had quality issues as well. I didn't have the yellow banding along the bottom but definitely nicks on the chrome bezel....made it look really cheap. The phone would become unresponsive all the time. The accelerometer was buggy and wouldn't switch from landscape to portrait without a little extra shaking. Just not to my liking. Customer support was ****e so I sold the phone on craigslist for a profit and purchased another one. Same niggling issues so I sold that one to another eager buyer for another tiny profit and decided that if I was getting bored of my Z2 I should just switch colors....so now I own a white one and love it all over again, lol.

Recommend Z2? Would you buy this again? What's to know?

I'm well aware of the Z2 specs, have read reviews, etc. But I want to hear from you guys, real world users. How are you liking your Z2? Is it awesome? Is it frustrating?
Opinions from real users that I'd love to hear about:
-Battery life
-Lag
-Sound quality (talking/mic/ringer, etc.)
-Is overheating really an issue?(I heard it was with 4k recording, which I probably won't do much of)
-Quirks, things that bug/annoy you about it. General problems that may be common in this phone.
Is this a phone that you "have to" root in order to make it more "usable", or is it pretty good out of the box?
What I like about the the Z2:
+current prices (can be had for around $400)
+good camera (on paper at least, please correct me if I'm wrong)
+screen size and resolution
+expandable memory
What i mainly don't like:
-sony seems to be slow on releasing updates
-no user replaceable battery(I know, where there's a will, there's a way, but still, it's nice to have that sometimes).
I'm trying to decide between this or a LG G pro 2.... both have expandable memory(a must for me) via microsdhc, a 1080p 5"+ screen(very preferable for me), with a decent camera(at least on paper), the real selling point is that the Z2 is cheaper with a slightly faster processor, otherwise, specs are relative similar to me as far as I'm concerned... I just want to know "real world" opinions... because everything may be great on paper, but the device could be a frustrating experience when beheld and used everyday.
Thanks!
Z2 -
The device was certainly worth the money i spent on it
1. Great battery
2. Barely any lags under normal use
3. Amazing camera quality (near SLR/DSLR in macro shots)
4. Very useful to have micro sdcard slot
Updates are fast as can be (xperia Z2 took forever to get 4.4.4 but all other xperias got it very quickly)
Xperia Z2 on 4.4.4 is certainly worth it. Its literely a Cheaper Z3 with slightly lesser quality.
It still has the potential (with root) to out perform the Z3
I wouldn't be able to tell you how much I like this device, specially after the last update.
Battery life is great, even without using Stamina mode which is very usefull.
UI is beautifull and really smooth. I really like the display.
I haven't had a problem with Z2 so far.
I think this device is pretty awesome out of the box.
Hi,
After 4 years of only HTC, I have decided to get the Z2.
I have it from one month (bought it new)
Pros:
- The phone, looks awesome, my opinion the speakers are more beautiful from Z3
- Camera is amazing
- Battery Life amazing, got and 4 days of normal use, (speaking at least 1 hour per day)
- it is the fastest phone I have used, very fast in the UI
- more
Cons:
- Very frustrating, very, very, very! bad sound, all my friend told me that they hear me very noisy, very bad, echoes..etc - using headset, amazing audio quality.
- after update to 4.4.4 every time I put my phone at ear to speak I find that quick setting drop down and activating/deactivating features form quick setting, even airplane mode and close the call
- very hard to upgrade to.. it took me about one day, tried many times.. to get the upgrade to 4.4.4, very much errors...
- very slippery, slipped from my pocket, fall down and get scratched.. very easy to scratch
If I have to chose again I would still get HTC, The One M8. I would be chose the bad camera, low battery life, but have a good call quality, most important feature of a phone.
Once again, it's my opinion and maybe I got "lucky" and I have got a bad one..
Best regards, and chose widely
Came from a rooted galaxy s3 about a month ago; which I still think is one of the best phones out there....but.....
The Z2 is very impressive, the battery life is extremely impressive and with normal (light) use I can get over 2 days out of it. The camera is amazing as is the 4k recording; but it does shutdown due to overheating at 4k after about 15 mins.
I have not experienced any lag whatsoever with the phone and it's as smooth as butter.
Some of the Sony apps get annoying with there constant toast messages but you can disable them.
One of the reasons I used to root phone was to use Titanium to back up all my apps and data; but the sony has it's own app for that; so I did root the phone originally; but have gone back to stock (mainly to get the last update)
It is a fingerprint magnet so cover and screen guard a must.
I have heard stories about the magnetic charging port coming off the phone, but I don't use it.
I have no issues with call quality at all even over hangouts, viber or Skype video. Think the echo experienced by other uses is phone specific as my wifes Sony M has echo but my sons doesn't.
For me the audio is so low and terrible, it seems to be a software problem and not a hardware problem but sony wont fix it, in call volume i can never hear
I splurged 800 on an unlocked Z2 about 8 months ago. I have to say I love the phone.
Great camera(HTC owners get envious sometimes)
Good battery life(loaded with apps I get about 28 hours regularly with moderate use. Once went 52 hours on a single charge without using stamina mode)
Microsd card slot is great to expand memory
Overall the phone is a real power house. Loads games quickly and keeps multiple apps running in the background with ease. Only thing I regret was not doing enough research during rooting process and ended up losing DRM keys in the process. Otherwise I would spend another 800 on a Z2 or Z3.
I have had multiple android phones latest was the note 3 which i swapped for the Z2
Spec wise the z2 is amazing
Cosmetically phone looks very very nice slick smooth overall looks the part. However it is the most slippery phone in the world if you try to sit this phone on your legs while sitting down for example forget about it its off in milliseconds
functionality wise not so much
While it does play anything you throw at it with ease games apps media etc.
Battery life is second to none best battery life and on screen time of any phone ive ever had
However the poor poor poor audio notification system is a big big downfall
Unless you physically have this phone in your hand you wont know its ringing or if you received a notification (unless you root and add mods which then don't fix the notification problem) Sony are not only aware of this problem they refuse to fix it or acknowledge that there is even an problem to fix and have even added the same problem onto the Z3
The waterproofing its sceptical as the so called protective flaps on the charger port at least randomly open so therefore leaves the phone vulnerable to water damage
The screen while looks stunning when watching HD clips or playing games in certain light you can clearly see all the Digitizer touch sensors (tiny dots) on the screen more so in good light watching something dark on your phone to me this is a major annoyance
Boasts a 20.7mp camera only while using manual controls (Not something the average user can or will ever do) In auto mode which almost everyone will use its limited to 8mp (Again unless you root and use a mod)
The features of the camera are absolutely brilliant timeshift,4K,AR effects etc. and many many more
Sony say there all for open source support and enable you to unlock your bootloader via there website if you wish to.
However doing so will delete your TA folder DRM keys (something that is not mentioned in the unlocking process) thus disabling many of the phones features in the process (Not so much support as punishment) such as ps4 remote play noise cancelling etc.(this obviously if you plan to root and unlock phone but lets face it your on xda so clearly thats the plan)
The development for this device is not so great (Respect to all the devs actively working on the device) not a great selection of roms mods etc. as you would see on other flagship devices
For me i would say no this is the first and the last Sony phone i will purchase
Given the choice i would trade back for my galaxy note 3 in a heartbeat
No doubt people will disagree but this is just my honest experience with the phone to date
Root fixes everything, except the lcd dots.
But this comment is interesting

Certain pre-loaded content on your device may also be inaccessible due to the removal of DRM security keys. For high-end devices running recent software versions, for instance Xperia Z3, the removal of DRM security keys may affect advanced camera functionality. For example, noise reduction algorithms might be removed, and performance when taking photos in low-light conditions might be affected. The secure user data partition may also become inaccessible, and you will not be able to get any more official software upgrades if you unlock the boot loader.

If I change my mind later on, is there any way to restore my device?
No. Once you have unlocked the boot loader, you will not be able to revert the device back to a locked or original state or restore the DRM security*keys. You can however use the*Flash tool for Xperia™ devices*to flash a generic Sony ROM, although it will not receive automatic software upgrades.

If the screen size doesn't matter for you, I would choose the lg. I've already had g2 and they have the multi window feature like in Samsung (of course after installing a proper rom). About xperia z2 itself, yes, I would buy it one more time, however htc one m8 had much better os. The battery life here is just awesome, I think only droid turbo could beat sony. I didn't use stock rom, but flashing dixperia made it finally almost lagfree device. The small apps are completely unusable for me. Camera, hmm the amount of megapixels is able to make the photos really good, however when I've compared 8mpx picture from z2 and 4mpx from one m8, the htc definitely wins it in matter of quality. The screen is good and readable in the sun and it doesn't catch so many fingerprints on the screen, however it's a bit more reflective than on htc, so you may find it annoying when watching a movie and seeing a reflection of a chandelier on the screen. Although it has 3gb of ram, the sony os kills more often the background apps than htc. There's one important thing about these devices. I've had two xperia z1 and now z2, and each of them has some hardware mulfunction, so be prepared that may be forced to use the warranty. In z2 I have a problem with mini jack as it sometimes doesn't detect headphones in it.

This is why the z2 will be the only Sony phone I ever own, we should not be penalised or lose features for doing what we want with our own devices! I'm really hoping Ara takes off in a big way as that is the kind of freedom that we need and should make the likes of Sony realise the mistakes they are making

Did you really go searching the Sony website just to post that lol
Like how they say doing so MAY RESULT IN INACCESSIBLE pre loaded features
Instead of the truth YOU WILL 100% NOT HAVE THESE FEATURES AT ALL
So while they still give you a slight misguided warning it doesn't help
On the other note it is possible to backup you TA folder prior to unlocking your bootloader (with root access)
So you WILL be able to restore to stock at a later date and relock your bootloader

I was torn between this and the LG G3, it was the phenomenal battery life of this that finally swung it.
Cons : OK, it's too big. For me the hot spot is about 4.7" I think it's a little big to comfortably fit in my pocket.
Pros : where to start, it's truly a brilliant device in almost all ways, battery life is brilliant (7 hours sot is achievable), camera fantastic.
Certainly given the choice I'd buy either the Z2 or maybe Z2 mini at the drop of a hat.
yep definitely awesome phone
Yeah my previous phones were all HTC, and I think I will stick with Sony for a while.
For me the best thing of the xperia z2 is that you can get one of the most awesomes phones for only $400, last time I spent $650 on my HTC One and I don't think it was worth it as it devaluated really quickly. The other great pros of the Z2 is the 3200mah battery and the fact that is waterproof is the feature that makes it different from all the other phones

Thanks for the input, do you find that the sound quality is lacking like some other users implied? Like the speaker and the microphone?

I haven't had issues with the speaker or the microphone. If anything I do wish that the phone would be a little louder when taking calls. I have the volume maxed out but I wouldn't mind it being just a tad louder. Then again it might just me because I think all phones should be a little louder. But otherwise everything seems nice and clear.
One issue I recently found was that my proximity sensor does not play well with long hair. I have been growing my hair out and because it is starting to go over my ears the phone can't detect my ear being close to the handset so my check presses random settings and stuff.

Gotcha, I guess I can get used to the volume not being as loud... afterall, I've been using a Nokia E72 for quite a while and the ear speaker or speaker phone volume is below par when compared to most smartphones I've listened to.
THat sounds a bit frustrating that the proximity sensor will trigger and random settings will change while using your phone on your ears.
I also wanted to thank all input, from everyone, really helped me out a lot.
I'm straying away from the G pro 2 now, the price is holding high for that device and the community here seems to be more active.
One more question, do you guys know if the Xperia Z2 has a stylus note taking app from Sony? I believe I saw a video of the Z ultra having an app from Sony that would let you take free style notes with a stylus, looked handy, I was wondering if that app could be had on the Z2 as well.
Yeah but I only notice the issue when I have my hair between the phone and my ear. Never happened while my hair was cut short.
As far as taking notes I am not sure if the sony app can be ported to the z2 but I do know evernote can do handwritten notes. You would just need to get a stylus that works for the z2.

z5 compact or Nexus 5x ?

really torn between these two devices ,
am talking about AOSP or CM on z5c , is AOSP working well on it ?
the 5x display is not that great , is the z5c display any better ?
any suggestion is appreciated .
I have just been evaluating the two side my side for the past fortnight trying to decide which to keep.
Hightlights of the z5c have been its size, speaker quality, and overall build quality. Micro SD slot is handy and waterproofness is nice to have. However I have found the camera to be very disappointing and slow to use and the results average. Also the smaller screen size can make operating Xperia keyboard and text input frustrating at times.. I dont htink the screen is as good as the one the Nexus but maybe thats just me. Excellent battery life. I have only tried Sony factory ROM and was not aware that others such as CM are available yet?
Highights of the Nexus 5x have been the crisp clean Marshmallow interface, good screen and excellent point and shoot camera. Screen is not as repsonsive as x5c when it needs to dim in a dark environment. It has a Terrific keyboard that is really accurate and easy to use. along with best fingerprint reader I have used. Downsides to it are its plasticy design with protruding lens which makes me reluctant to put it down on its back on a desk. even though I know the lens will not contact the desk. A Google Adopted TPU case fixed this though. But as soon as you encase it no-one will have any idea it is a google phone. Speaker is crappy and poor sound quality compered to z5c. USB C power cables are orphans and mean you cannot use existing A cables existing devices most people have. Couple this with a mediocre battery life can be problematic. Biggest downside for me though is its size. Too big too put into from jeans pocket and protrudes an inch or so out the top of shirt pocket.
So I ended up selling my 5x and keeping the z5c. My hope is that Sony will do something in the marshmallow update to improve the point and shoot usabilty of the camera. Hope this helps.

thanks a lot , very helpful ,
and yes there is an AOSP 5.1.1 rom available for the z5c , no CM yet ( can't imagine it will be long before a release , given sony has released the binaries ) ,
here you go :
http://fxpblog.co/aosp/aosp-5-1/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/orig-development/aosp-builds-z5c-t3226266
I haven't tested the 5x yet, but have the z5c for about two weeks now and in my opinion there are two main issues with the z5c:
First the display colors really seem to be washed out, the black is more a really dark grey than a black (I don't know if this is due to a defect screen or if this is the case for all z5c's), also the display resolution of 720p isn't really enough for me as I clearly can see the edges of round app icons for example even when I'm farther away from the screen.
Also the increase of the phone temperature during prolonged use really bothers me, but that's a known issue of the Snapdragon 810. The camera is just okay, I honestly expected more, especially in low light conditions. But as far as is understand this is rather a post-processing issue than an hardware issue, I hope this improves with Marshmallow.
Two plus points are good battery live (maybe also due to the relatively low res screen) and the overall speed of the phone, which really has improved since the last firmware update.
I had both phones at the same time. Here are my thoughts:
Z5 Compact
+ I prefer the phone size much better
+ I play ingress, so prefer the better battery life and single handed use
+ I have a couple of external battery packs, which quick charge the Z5C
+ Waterproof
+ Really like that Sony went with regular micro-USB connector unlike the Z3C
+ Expandable memory. This can become expanded internal memory in Marshmallow
+ I love Tap to Wake
+ It is a sexy looking device
- Thicker than the N5X
- Not thrilled that the volume rocker is below the power button
- Surely majority of folks don't use the wrist strap feature?! It's a dust collector for me.
- Typing an issue on a smaller keyboard
- Voice recognition is iffy
- I hate that I don't have the option to turn off the notification light at when charging at night (always have to remember to place the phone facedown)
- Run hot under heavy use, but I use a case to avoid the slipper glass on the back anyway
Nexus 5X
+ Clean UI
+ Fast updates
+ Better fingerprint sensor
+ Thin and light
+ Better typing experience
+ Ambient display
- Too large for single-handed use
- Camera pops out like a nipple - could be seen as a positive
- USB-C means new expense on cables and charger (consider the added expenses here)
- My external chargers will work with N5X, but will not charge as quick as a licensed Qualcomm Quickcharge phone
- The vibration motor is a lot harsher than the Z5C. Not a fan.
- The mono speaker seems to be facing the back, but there is no opening on the back, so sound is kinda muffled.
- What's the deal with the giant bezel?!
- No expanded memory support
- The internal specs are lower (808 vs 810 in Z5C, and Adreno 418 vs 430 in Z5C). The Z5C guts are actually in the Nexus 6P, but with 3GB RAM.
I ended up returning the Nexus 5X primarily because of the size and having to make sure I have a USB-C cable handy in case I run through the battery. Even when I had the phone charging while I was playing ingress, the phone battery was discharging faster than recharging.
The Z5C is very comfortable to use. I do have an itch for a completely bloat free UI, with Marshmallow. Once unlock and root processes eventually get released/cleaned-up, the Z5C will be take a bigger bite into the Nexus 5X's main selling point.
N5X advantages:
- Camera (for photos) is in another league, look at the camera samples, the photos are very sharp compared to all Sony Z cameras.
- Fast updates.
- Stock clean Android (only Google apps that can be disabled) / Camera2 API / probably…not sure: Google Now Always ON / etc
Z5C adv:
- Battery life (If N5X battery life is less than 50% better than N5 battery, then it still really sux).
- Size (subjective)
- SoC 810 is much better.
- Long battery life when gaming.
- Some General hardware~ (mic quality / screen quality / etc).

Finally i bought the 5x due to no AOSP roms available yet on z5c ,
thanks everyone .
So, I had nexus 5x for 1.5 month, got 5x after beloved Sony z5c international with fingerprint reader and wrist strap due to switching to verizon from ATT and it was cheapest of the semi-decent phones. I regret both.
1. While its compatible, and verizon sim works, i barely get signal 3G LTE to none while my other friends right next to me with iphones and samsung phones get high speed full bars 4g lte, so must be poor antenna or not fully compatible with verizon as claimed. And mind you its after hours on the phone with verizon i got it to even work. When i try send emails most times it flashes message every 1-2 seconds "no connection" "retry" then "connected", that creates multiple drafts when im trying to send email, nuisance to say the least. Or messages I thought were sent stuck in limbo, shown sent on device, but when login to email account from pc it isnt sent or even in drafts, so its on a device stuck, not sent even when connected while shown as sent on device.
2. giant phone not one handed. And no wrist strap hook!
3. Poor photo quality, no depth, poor resolution, only way to focus camera is to take 1 shot only then it tries to focus, any other way it would normally work on z5c with green to red focus window is not available. I tweaked it a bit using camera MX but even so, mediocre original software & hardware.
3. Pricy and no expansion memory, i got 32gb, and OS + apps already took over 20gb, and mind you i only have very few brain games and productivity apps like docsToGo that do not take much space, rest is android os itself upfront.
4. Not waterproof or resistant. Even when water droplet hits center of screen it acts out thinking its my finger, z5c did not react same way to water at all, it ignored it mostly, only responding to finger.
5. google keyboard is horrible, not even arrows to move coursor right or left within text, and gokeyboard became commercialized with adds so.. i didnt find better alternative, and you have to be precise getting it into right spot to insert extra words in between especially at the beginning of paragraph.
6. New Android version lost too many good features gaining none. Like little menu on the bottom right to close all open apps at once, gone! Now you have to manually close each app. specific to z5c mini apps like calculator, browser that can be used simultaneously with other apps window in window, shown both at once of course not included, and nothing similar available.
7. Battery life poor. I had about 5hours browsing no video out of it before it hits 20% mark from 100%, with video even faster. While usb c helps charge faster, true, but it doesnt help battery life , and no wireless charging, adapters just came to market, i do not think ill keep phone long enough to try if it works.
8. Back to memory expansion, so forget microsd, but even usb wont work. I have samsung duo usb3 to micro usb, so attempt 1 was to use anker adapter with my samsung usbduo drive and it didnt even register the drive. So i went ahead and bought an app to register usb c drive, didnt work. attempt 2 after shelling out for the nexus 5x compatible app, bought usb c flash drive guess what, only registers with that app, and even then cant just browse folders and files, open, work with file, save, ..no. you would have to copy to phone then work with file, save to phone only, and only then copy or move back to usb c drive. Really! So i scrapped that plan, went cloud, and got rid of usb c drive.
9. When plug in to pc have to manually each time select transfer files or it will only charge by default, havent found way to change that either.
10. Camera and fingerprint reader so close, guess where your fingerprint lands most times? Yup, keep wiping the camera lense.
11. Cherry on top, doesnt come with usb c to usb 2.0 or usb 3.0 cable, google store omitted that just saying charger and usb c cable, so as you discover that fact and jumping to look for a cable thats never seems available in google store site, your return time slot is closing down on you ..14 days..and you cant even test it with pc plugged in..
So, good stuff..fingerprint scanner works, usb c charge faster by 2x time.. that is about it.
Contacted google store and since its over 14 days = nonrefundable.
Conclusion, I am going back to AT&T and my beloved z5c! Yes, it doesnt have usb c and older (better version of android).. but guess what small, waterproof, has wriststrap to phone not just case, faster, better camera, better photos album layout, keyboard, LTE 4G without hangs and drops, same fingerprint scanner, and if i left out anything else, its there, on that sweet small device.
Perhaps someone else might find 5x mediocre good enough and cheap enough but for me I am ok going back to proven to be better for same price!
Edit: I didn't read the dates or the whole tread. I need sleep.
Hello,
I'm facing the same thing for a few days now; I'm hesitating between picking up a Nexus 5X or a Z5C, the first one has the advantage of frequent updates and clean Android experience but a relatively big screen while the second one has an ideal screen but I've heard about lots of overheating problems related to it.
So since it's 2016 and both phones are running Marshmallow, can you guys give me a quick update on your experiences now ? Thanks

The Sony ui is still full of bugs but marshmallow performs at a decent level. Still nothing to compete with it in its size class.

The z5c is a great phone, its just the battery life isn't the best in my opinion......you ever consider thinking of the Z3C? Im sure its a no since its been 2 years passed.
Thanks a lot for your feedback, As you said: the thing is that the Z5C has nothing to compete against in the small flagship category, if the battery lasts for a day on average use then I'm fine also the phone doesn't overheat from normal use as I've been reading all over the internet.
Regarding the Z3C, I think I can consider it if it's not too far from the Z5C performance, any feedback on that could be helpful!

Z3c edges out slightly better in performance and dev support. BUT it has side charging port and flaps, not the most practical. It's all about your price range really.
Thanks a lot! Actually I have a bit of money on the side so I can get the Z5C, and in Europe the difference between the Z5C and the Z3C is like 60 dollars, the nexus 5x is the cheapest of all three phones

Just like guy from above said, its all about your price/how much you can afford, ppl mainly go for nexus 5x for fast updates (pretty much it). If you not picky on the year, Z3C is your best bet if you want performance and best battery life and plus theres a unique developer at the Z3C forum that has been making the Z3C a perfect phone for anyone. The reason I got the Z5C is because I had screen issues on the Z3C and plus i was still in love of the compact series of the xperia. Z5C is doing fine for me

Well thanks a lot, I do trust your ways around phones, so I've ordered a Z3C with a magnetic charger ( to avoid trouble with slot flaps ) think it's my best bet as you said.

Your welcome, be sure to go to the Z3C forum if you have additional questions, its really a good phone. I recommend flashing this rom to make your phone very unique but before doing that, you need root and recovery, thank God its easier to do it without unlocking the boot loader, just zoom in that forum for all of your questions, I wish you the best of luck!

I suggest you cancel the z3c order. The Z3/Z3c is easy to has touch issue after 12~16 months, the touch panel life cycle is short, my friend Z3 got screen problem right after his warranty expired a few days(exactly 12 months passed) and he fuxked up and switched to Iphone, he was a Sony fans with only SE/Sony phones used in his life.
I admit Z3c got better software development, battery and thermal control. However, the camera on Z3c is worse than Z1c/Z5c. But if you only want a cheap compact and don't care buy another one after 1~2 years then Z3c is still a good choice.

Hello and sorry I was on vacation )
Thank you very much though as (un)lucky as I am, I've returned the z3c via amazon but then I'm back looking, maybe I only have the z5c or something like htc m8 to go after.

Why do so few people buy these phones

I guess I was in the same boat as I would never have considered a Sony smartphone in a million years. The only reason I stumbled across the 5 ii is because I was tired of having gigantic smartphones which were cumbersome to carry around. So I started looking at smaller phones and bought a Pixel 5. Overall not a bad phone, but I could never get used to the rear fingerprint scanner, and the earpiece audio quality is terrible. I hated making phone calls as I always struggled to hear what people were saying. I guess the glass screen protector didn't help.
The only other phone I could find with a small form factor with decent audio and specs was the 5 ii. Having never owned a Sony phone before I took the plunge and bought one and I can honestly say I don't regret it one bit. I actually love everything about this phone. Odd aspect ratio which actually works really well, great audio quality, headphone jack, great display, great battery life. There's nothing I don't like about it. Apart from the tap to wake that doesn't work properly!! If I had to be nit picking I would say Sony could probably put a bit more work into the standard camera app as not everyone wants to change a million settings in the pro camera app before they take a photo. Having worked my way through the pro camera app though I have managed to take some pretty decent low light photos which is impossible with the standard camera app.
So I guess we are a select few that really know how good this phone is. I am happy for now and will use this for a good while before I start itching to buy another phone.
Problem with the Sony mobile division is that they have had a pretty bad reputation in the last 5 years or so. The build quality of their phones was avarage, they didn't want to innovate and they had zero advertisement. This has changed with their latest 2 lineups, but it will be very difficult for them to get their marketshare back.
This is my first Sony and while I like their Photo Pro app very much I probably won't get another Sony unless they up the hardware, especially the screen in bright light.
not a Sony owner but I've seen both Marques Brownlee and Mr.Whostheboss say Sony don't send reviewers handsets out in any kind of time for launch day videos.
Sony waits 6 months to LOAN phones out, long enough for the moment the be passed and the reviewer to not see the point in making the video.

The only thing that I regret about my 5 II it's the camera quality...Coming from a P30 Pro I'm a little bit disappointed, even with the Camera Pro app...Gcam it's not stable, so there is no way to improve this phone...Unfortunately, I need to sell it cause I need the camera quality on my phone, and Sony disappointed me... The audio quality it's awesome, screen it's not so bright but it's looking nice, also, I love this form factor, I wish that other smartphone would have it....
I like the Photo Pro software but no one I know does. They prefer point-and-shoot with heavy AI and computational photography.

To know Sony is to hate them.
Their products I tore down were complete junk.
I dealt extensively with them 16 years ago.
They are rotten to the core.
Mind you I'm one of the few customers that has talked to a Sony VP* and gotten a full refund check from them
Look up the inventor of the Walkman and see how they screw him.
*he was a well educated, arrogant malaka who was zero help.
I don't know Sony or General Motors or any corporation. I keep watching to see one but so far, no. Now, I understand you hate the company but you had nothing to say about the Sony Xperia 5 II. Perhaps you can find a "Hate Sony" forum. I'm surprised to hear you got to know the Sony VP so well that you're familiar with his sexual habits. I'm not knocking it. To each his own.

You don't understand Greek culture well at all do you? Tough
The VP's exact words were:"I could help you, but I choose not to." Then he took the time to explain the 3 ways he could have help me in detail.
In the a midlevel manager did what the VP would not do.

Well, I'm personally a photographer and I prefer point& shoot rather than tweaking all the settings. The camera pro app it's good, but the lenses are very bad, I couldn't make a macro shot with 5 II, so I've switched to s20+ and I'm happy now
Sony like to live in the past it seems. I've owned Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola and I must say Sony handsets are solidly engineered. Though they like their old school stuff... 3.5mm jack, no wireless charging... in a SD865! It almost feels like an old retired engineer designed their phones. Good, well built, but not exactly "bells and whistles". If you want a non-fancy phone with the latest SoC, though with a high price, get a Sony. I don't regret my purchase at all.

Never had one. They look like nice phones.
Sony though is rotten to the core.
They are known to cut corners in unscrupulous ways... I've seen it firsthand.
Their stereos, cams, and multidisc players were trash 15 years ago. Had them all apart and the factory service manuals. So don't dismiss what I say too lightly.
I haven't bought any Sony products since.
Consider yourself warned
Canon, Denon make Grade A equipment on the other hand. Owned and repaired them as well.
The Sony Trinitron is a thing of beauty, you must admit. The best tube ever built in my opinion. The only time I've ever been really angered with Sony was when they removed the otherOS feature from the PS3. That was a deek move. Don't forget also that Sony manufacture the Raspberry Pi. Which I'm eternally grateful to them for, for bringing a huge industry to our beloved UK from China.

Indeed. I still have Sony Trinitron monitor.
80# of precision phosphors, 2nd to none.
For gaming and movies you can't beat the smoothness of CRT afterglow

Question Complains - would you ever recommend buying this phone ?

anything that sony got wrong, from build quality to processor overheating. i am interested in buying my first sony smartphone, so would like to see if its a wise investment.
like with any other product today, it really depends what you are after. In absolute terms, there's no device that should score more than 6/10 if you really go nip ticking around every single detail.
With that said, I really hate holes in the screen, so reason #1, then I really like SD card, not because I need 3TB of storage but because I keep all the stuff that I need on SD and if phone breaks it is an easy solution. So that's #2.
The main complaint seem to be overheating, but that happens with recording/taking pictures. Not sure, never happened to me because I don't care about cameras on phone. Every one in the last 5 years is decent enough for casual photo and every single one sucks in comparison to a proper camera for half the price.
Now, build quality seems great, but it's been just 2 months. XZ2 I had for 4 years and that was a tank so if this one is that good than no complaints.
Also. I could list 20 features that ppl will argue about and I find them completely irrelevant. I paid for the undamaged screen and SD card slot first, the rest I could get for 1/3 of the price of mark IV. Screen I could get on some gaming phone or under display camera one but those don't have SD. And many chinese phones still have USB 2 so.......
I agree with nearly everything @kinggo2 wrote, I don't really dislike holes in the screen. But I must say Sony has done well to get rid of those massive bezels of the past. The phone did heat up a bit when I started using it. It
seems to have learnt my usage case and doesn't heat up as much. I love the fact that it does have a sdcard slot and a headphone jack. I also just store stuff on a card and move the card when I get a new phone. The only thing I miss is an FM radio which I still listen to. I can get around this by streaming. My Z5 Premium and Z2 are still good and work. That said, the price is high. I justified it by saying it was a good deal because I got a free set of WH-1000XM4 cans with the phone. Phones are a depreciating asset, but if you don't like the price, see whether the 5 IV suits you. And yes, I would recommend it.
I'd recommend buying it over the exynos S22+....laggy, overrated phone...the Xperia is smooth as silk in comparison

Processor known to heat , case design, and software optimization i guess
So.. I agree with @kinggo2 .. My 2 cents :
All the reviews that weigh battery life / charging speed high are irrelevant to me. As long as no phone can do a week, I am perfectly happy with phones that last a full day on average - which the sony does. I also charge the phone at night - so I dont really care about charging speed. By the way, I had an Asus ROG 5 and while the charging speed was spectacular, the battery capacity degraded rapidly and after 6 months, I could barely use it for 1/2 a day. Many studies show that frequently charging your phone at high wattages reduces battery life.
No other phone has 12GB RAM, 512GB Storage, 4K display, expandable storage, dual sim, close to stock android skin, good camera hardware, 3.5mm jack, front display without camera cutouts - and all that packaged in a sleek 185mg, IP68, matte glass back body that is so much easier to grasp - and I really hate curved displays, which thankfully sony has decided not to do.
If you don't like the default camera app, you can download Gcam for free, and get really awesome single click night photos (low light photos are probably the only area that I concede that the default camera app's basic mode is really bad - everything else is not really that perceptible IMHO)
On principle, I don't buy Apple or Samsung phones. I feel they unfairly enter into deals with the carriers (atleast in the US) to ensure that they remain the dominant manufacturers. It is unfair to the consumers that in the US, it is very hard to get a Xiaomi, POCO, ASUS, Motorola phone and even if you do, connectivity is very poor and 5G will probably not work. Even Sony had to delay US launch probably because they had to put in a different modem. I don't like being bullied by Apple and its fanbase into being forced to use iMessage, AirDrop and Facetime. Lock-in strategies are bad for consumers in general and is a major road-block to innovation.
