It was repeated all over in the G5 section, the only unlockable version is the european H850.
Also the H830 has root and twrp, but these are the only two models.
Thats dumb.

One has to realize that the developers who courageously "get root" for us do so on their own time. Not only that, on their own dime as well. In the trial and error process of unlocking the bootloader the risk of nuking their devices is high (and quite a few developers have nuked this model and others). And they go and buy another, so they can continue development. This gets very expensive.
And most importantly, with devices like the G5 - it takes time.
So while it's easy for one to respond "that's dumb", etc - I guess the above points are completely disregarded. Or perhaps not even known in the first place.
Most importantly, we are at the will of the developers. If they feel they are being disrespected, amongst other things - it would not be unreasonable for them to halt development. Please keep all of this in mind.

I understand all that they go through and are doing and i appreciate it, i meant no disrespect. Im just saying its dumb that lg doesnt let you unlock the bootloader. I came from a moto x 2014 and all i had to do to unlock the bootloader was sign up on a website and do some other stuff.

At this point, the h830 and h850 are the only models that can be rooted due to being able to unlock the bootloader.
Hey guys, just one question for those of you who already have root. Didn't want to open a new thread.
When using Nova launcher, are you able to unlock the phone without it requesting a pin to be entered?
I really need this answer, going nuts with a stock launcher

Under Lockscreen I selected "None" and never have to enter a pin - I do use Nova, but I'd assume it would be the same with any launcher? Unless I'm completely missing the point here

First of all thank you for responding
Well the point is, with LG stock launcher you can set up pin protection but it works in conjunction with the fingerprint reader meaning that when you unlock the screen with fingerprint phone is not asking for a pin entry. You are however able to double tap to power the screen and then enter pin to unlock if for some reason you do not want to use reader.
Let me ask again Are you able to do mentioned above with Nova and root? Can you maybe test for me

Good grief, what a pain to set that up
Sometimes I can unlock it by just touching it with the finger I set up, but other times I get "Unable to use fingerprint" and have to use the pin. I'd say it's about 50/50
No idea why it sometimes works and other times doesn't, but I'm removing the lock again now ... way too much hassle

Hey man, I'm also using Nova Launcher on my LG G5 H860 (no root tho - obviously - woe is me!), and I use the finger print scanner AND a pattern. I think LG suspect that the fingerprint scanner alone is not enough security, so they make us use a pattern or pin on top of that. At least that's my guess since I was immediately prompted to add the pin, password or pattern after setting up my fingerprints. Also, upon rebooting, EVERY TIME I have to put in my pattern. The fingerprint alone is not enough to gain access.
I'm guessing it would depend on the ROM you use, not particularly the launcher. But let us know how you go... Have you rooted yet?
Nice avatar BTW. \m/

It's actually a backup option I think, in case when fingerprint reader fails. Makes sense
System is not letting other apps take control over the phone even though they are listed as device administrators. It's a new security measure introduced with MM.
Of course everything changes when you have root privileges
I've rooted the phone yesterday. Nova can now unlock the phone with just a fingerprint. Also installed the Viper audio mod and deleted a few system apps.
Right now I'm investigating how to prolong the super brightness mode so it can last longer than lousy two minutes
Glad to hear someone appreciates the sound of perseverance \m/ \m/

The PIN is, just as you said, a backup security measure. If you're rooted you can go and download a fingerprint add on through Xposed.. that means Only your fingerprint is needed to unlock your device.
"Fingerprint Enabler" ?

Don't have G5 so I can't test or even know if what I'm saying is correct, but I was looking through the G5 git tree and saw the super brightness mode seems to be called HL_MODE standing for LGE_HIGH_LUMINANCE_MODE, there's referenced to it in the code, you could probably edit it there then compile and it will most likely work, however it seems it's also with references to the kernel so you probably gonna have to edit both the kernel and ROM simultaneously to make things easier...

I find it not working correctly more often than not, however, that is because I only really use it while my phone is lying down, so the angle of my face might be tripping it up. I can't imagine what it will be like on the iphone x where this is the only way to unlock the phone. Holding my phone up to my face is not how I want to unlock my phone every time.

Depends on the features your want, but I really don't have any complaints for this device. I have a friend that prefers devices with touch sensor swiping and dt2w, so he doesn't care much for these Motorola phones.
I prefer phones with good developer support and stock Android. Makes Moto phones an excellent fit for me. If you intend to run custom roms LG might be a poor choice as you generally loose features like VoLTE and VoWiFi.

Think is I don't actually need a phone, I have a V20 and 40. But I do need internet for next month, for which I'll just get a simply prepaid for that month. (My T-Mo plan is a grandfathered from 10+ years ago that's only $20, doesn't include high speed internet) And I saw a promo that if you buy in advance 3 months you can get the G Play or a E 2020. And figured, need only 1 but 3 months of unlimited internet is also good, specially if I get an okay phone. But if I can't root it. It could be a $1k flagship and I wouldn't care. And Moto's near stock looks very apealing. V40 has Lineage but as you said would lose VoLTE.
Moto looks like phones that would allow me to tinker, I miss my old HTCs. There was so much ROM variety and customization. Now it's either OEM optimized, or all the CFW look the same, aesthetically speaking, they look so bland. Man now that our phones are more powerfull I'd like to see a Sense 3-4. Loved that layout, as heavy as it was.
Sorry went on rant there. Anyway, I'd just like if the phone can be thinker with. And can handle some light gaming like FFBE and the text be readable.

Sweet! Thanks for the info, got mine the 8. Gonna wait the week and then start thinkiering with it.
And all bands and VoLTE work well? For my V40 I am limited what to flash if I don't wanna lose B71.
Still gotta deal with Carrier Device Manager, MCM Client and Mobile Installer? I disabled as much as I could without root, remove all permisions from those and "Digital Wllbeing" and McAfee and they're still pestering me. Specially MCM on the ntifications. Can't wait to root and get rid of everything.
But if crosflashing to RETUS can get rid of some of those I'll do that first.
(Well After I SIM unlock the phone, don't wanna have to deal with returning to stock for that)

It's generally fine to (entirely) cross flash Moto phones. Only difference between carrier and RETUS is the product partition afaik, so I don't bother personally. I just use a Magisk module to clear out the nondisable folder and I can then disable whatever I don't want.

Oh the play does have swipe sensore for notifications. And although it doesn't have dt2w I just tap it to the side, any slide movement wake the screen and you can the swipe to unlock. It does wake up for the littlest for movements so it can get a bit annoying.
I've had my share of grief with the fingerprint sensor on my Pixel 6, but it's totally usable and I was generally fine with it. Until I realised yesterday that all that oh-so complex and safe AI security procedure that allegedly makes the sensor so slow is complete bs.
I was sitting next to a friend who had never used an in-screen fingerprint sensor before and he wanted to mess around with it. After like 5 seconds he unlocked the phone. His left thumb was accepted by the phone. I was in utter shock. He was able to unlock the phone every single time without any problems whatsoever. So I thought ok, this might be rare, but there is a tiny chance that two people have very similar fingerprints. But needless to say, I was not able to unlock his iPhone with my fingerprint.
I have a few things that I dislike about the Pixel, but this safety concern feels major to me.

it sure has been reported before but seeing it from others with the simplicity to bypass it is not just scary but hopefully embarrassing for Google and I hope they fix this.

Wow, hadn't heard about that yet. In the past I've heard that those simple face unlocks can be tricked by as little as a picture of someone, but I always thought fingerprint sensors would be precise and safe. Well, leave it to google to mess it up I guess.
I thought google hardware would be worth something in 2021, but this phone does not feel good at all.
Scary potential security problems indeed...
Did you have Smart Lock enabled? Did it actually scan the finger (i.e. did it get really bright on that part of the screen). The screen shows the fingerprint icon even when the phone is unlocked.
I didn't realise it was unsafe as well as being completely useless.
I have a use my pin to unlock it 50% of the time.
It also uses a CCD (i.e. camera) to read the fingerprint, so in theory, a picture of your finger should trick it into unlocking.
For all worrying about their esim when unlocking bootloader and installing custom rom : no problem !

@Sui77 Proton is a really good choice. I installed it on my P5 after my P6 arrived and got it all set up. I just wanted to play around and see what's what. It's very much like stock with some extremely nice tweaks and enhancements. I'm tempted to unlock the P6 and I haven't unlocked and run a custom rom since my 5X.
So my question to the OP here is does Google Pay work? How about banking apps. I'm not about to root.. yet. I'd certainly make sure I had 2FA and the like on certain things but I'd still be a little concerned. One of the nice things I saw was that it was on the Nov update with the FPR tweaks seemingly enabled. Which means that call screening and blocking still work unlike us poor saps hoping for a January fix. Any gotch-yas that you have found?

What do you mean? I'm just not getting what you are trying to say. Unless I select erase eSim when factory resetting it remains as registered to my provider as does the physical sim.
I believe you have to have an esim setup 'first' and then go to your custom ROM. I went from stock to graphene, and had to run *#*#INFO#*#* and enable DSDS for it to be configurable.
I then flashed proton AOSP over the top (the minimal gapps version) as Graphene is just too locked down at the moment for my needs (couldn't get a work profile too work, nor my deliveroo rider and Uber driver apps, these are due to missing shims from what I've read on the GH issue tracker and should improve over time)
It passes SN out of the box with or without gapps (though you will have to install the sandbox okay services as per instructions if you want to keep gpay) I'm rooted running a custom kernel, no other SN modules and running great.
Do you have to unblock the bootloader first to install on your Pixel 6?
