Which phone brand has the longest update support? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
I am writing to you because my Motorola Edge has not received any software updates for 7 months now. In addition, the phone has battery problems and a lot of software bugs.
So I think it's time to switch phones. Prior to this phone I had a Huawei P9 Lite that lasted for more than 7 years, getting software updates right up until the very last moment. But obviously I made the wrong choice.
Can you recommend a new phone that answers the question above?

If your Motorola Edge happens to be a XT2063-2 or XT2063-3 then you can get weekly security updates if you change the operating system to LineageOS. I wouldn't be surprised if updates continue for another 4 years or so.
Here's a guide for your reading enjoyment https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/racer/
If you have to purchase a new phone and you want long term support updates, I think Google Pixel 6 comes with 5 years of updates and Samsung Galaxy S comes with 4 years. If I decided on the Samsung Galaxy, I would get an unlocked global version and avoid any US version so I could install a custom operating system in the future when the phone is old.

Oppo R9S Plus last Official Firmware

Just wanted to see what were the dates on some of you guys firmware? I found CPH1611EX_11_OTA_013_all_201707150952, since its the last firmware mentioned on their website, I wanted to had anyone tested to see if they unblocked fastboot commands for this phone? Heard something that they were trying to undo their mistake of hiding the phones from fastboot commands.
Oppo couldnt care less about their devices or users. Only interested in pushing numbers unfortunately. Was my first Android after iPhone since forever. Bought 4 of the for the family but alas. Stuck with below par messages app, a launcher that keep on swithing back from my custom, background apps that are killed and rendered useless (tracking and parental control apps) and so on.. no more Oppo. Not even if I get one free (I'll take it and sell it of course !

That is my current mind set actually, but I've been trying to get the one I have to restore. Bad part is all the revenant files are always missing or deleted. It sucks. None of the binary files work on the R9 Plus .ozip files either so I can't go that route. Even there community site deleted old posts that referenced being able to restore or hack the phone...but as long as people want an iPhone look a like that is cheaper, they will keep customers

2018 ROM
Hi,
there is a newer version available, Android version remains the same, but security patches are 2018.
http://downloads.oppo.com.s3.amazon...us/CPH1611EX_11_OTA_018_all_201804130004.ozip
Anyway, R9s Plus is a great phone, though the software is terrible. I would "kill" for AOSP.
Hi,
looks like there is another security update. Don't expect a newer version of the Droid :/
https://oppo-au.custhelp.com/app/software_update_detail/p_name/R9s+Plus
Version No.: CPH1611EX_11_A.19_180529
Size: 1730M
Update Date: 2018-09-28
Has anyone ever figured out how to decompile the encrypted ozip file? Thanks

would you?

Considering the severe lack of support and updates on the matter 10 pro for the USA, would you consider buying another Huawei device?

Yes, but I will not buy the US version even if it comes without warranty, I just learned that I'll never buy a US version on any Android phone, for example, Samsung phones cannot unlock the bootloader on the US version so you can't root it or install other rom, and you will get updates months after the international version, same thing happens to LG about the updates, I have the Mate 10 Pro, and I will probably buy the Mate 20 Pro on March, if there is a US version I won't be buying it
Their decision to stop providing keys for unlocking the bootloader means that I wouldn't buy Huawei again, really. They have nothing to gain from it apart from locking users into their system, and I can't stand that sort of thing in a product I bought and own.

Agreed. I just don't feel in screen fingerprint scanner are smart. The one on the back is perfect on the 10 pro. I looked at the P20 pro, but really hate the fpr being on the front. Feels note 5 ish

I have no real reason to unlock the bootloader tbh. I haven't rooted a phone in about 4 years. Note 5 I rooted for hotspot haCk. That was it other than that, no real reason for me to
I won't be buying Huawei again until they get rid of the excessive background task killer, that causes problems for a number of my apps and widgets. I love the hardware, but really not keen on the software

I still don't see how people have this issue. I have no issue with background as being killed. Maybe check the launch setting inside battery in settings and make sure it's set to manually manage them.
Using Mate 10, never gonna buy Huawei again.
No promised updates (digital zoom, arcore, volte in my country, emui 8.1, camera update, disgrace front camera etc)
Idiotic background killing for battery stats (notification problems, dont care how many hour i am seeing at battery page if phone lacks basic job like app notification.)
Not using it for first time but i tought some things changed after 2 years and got my response, this is last time for sure...

I guess we must use the phone differently
It's better than it used to be, in that things sometimes work now. Yes, all the apps with problems are allowed to auto launch and run in the background, and even have 'ignore battery optimisations' set. They all worked just fine on all my previous phones.

Huawei P10 OTA updates

Since the old official ota updates thread is deleted and was very useful, i thought that creating a new one is a good idea, post here whenever you receive an official OTA update.
I think the official update are finished (except for security patches)

Today security patch 04 (9.0.1.252(C432E1P1R9-patch04)) arrived

So I suppose we are no longer getting any updates? Just patches? It's frustrating that the issue when waking up the phone is still not fixed.

Already did factory reset a couple of times, it's due to the update itself. It never happened on Emui 8 or any other versions. The issue happens when the phone it's locked and you want to unlock it: fingerprint won't work, even though you try it for several times, it just won't wake the phone. After a few button presses then the phone wakes up, eventually the fingerprint will work too but after the unlock the system.ui is killed and restarted. Quite frustrating. It happens randomly, could be once in a few days or multiple times a day, depends on how lucky you are. I'm not the only one having this, other people mentioned it too on other forums. Kinda sad that huawei made it this way. I guess this will be my last.
I have a different issue with EMUI 9 - battery life. I was getting 5 hours of screen on time on Oreo, I didn't go past 4 hours since the update.
Local Huawei consultant says B263 is going to be the last update for P10. I still didn't get 262...

Huawei P10 VTR-L09 update
Hi guys, I need some help with the system updates, I've bought a used P10 VTR-L09 and it's still stuck on Android 8.0.0, I am not receiving any OTA updates.
Sorry, wrong thread
Does anybody know anything about these releases? I think the marked one should arrive for standard devices VTR-L29/L09 but there is no sign of approval in firmware finder yet. It's been a really long time since the last software update. Mine is on July 2019 patch.
Petition is here:
https://www.change.org/p/huawei-sig...-emui-10-and-be-included-in-the-official-list
(android 10)
Is this petition going to make any change at all?
I see updates on firmware finder that are aproved but never released on OTA. For example 9.1.0.270 that is supposed to bring march 2020 update.
The latest OTA i got is from july 2019 and it's very dissapointing from Huawei. P10 is still a phone capable of running even android 10. It's a shame that they don't support devices at all and really makes me switch and never come back to them or android in general because of the lack of support from manufacturers.
Hi yesterday i got a security update https://consumer.huawei.com/fr/support/bulletin/2021/5/
but now i have several unwanted installed apps
AI voice
celia keyboard
link now
book
petal maps
petal search
I'm not getting the 9.1.0.297 update with may 2021 security update for some reason. I tried to clear update apps's data as suggested by Huawei support, but it still does not come up. I wonder if some variants of P10 are excluded, or if the update will come later for certain variants, mine is the dual-sim vtr -l29.

Updates

Is it normal for a such a device as this to be 2 months behind on updates? I don't mind, just find it interesting that other samsung devices are getting the august update, while this device (for some) is still stuck on June. I guess considering this is a tablet and not subject to the same update features as a phone, it may take a little longer.
If you read this, you'll note that all Samsung Tablets are update quarterly.

Question Any information about Android 13

We got the information by early November, but still nothing happened. Anyone with some information when this is gonna be released?
There was new update for japanese version 2 days ago...not sure if its patch or new version https://xpericheck.com/SOG09/24936126
I ve got US 62 model and the only thing i ve got so far is security update.
Hope they fix wifi because its awfull at least on mine.
nope not even a new security patch
that's Sony guy's
I have the Xperia 5 IV XQ-CQ72 and i got update notification but still on Android 12. no 13 yet.
I have Xperia 5 IV XQ-CQ72 too. No 13 either, but I just bought the phone (Black Friday acquisition). I'm new to Sony family, previously I had a few Vivo phones. So far I'm impressed. It's amazing how Japanese squeeze such a lot of electronics into a small phone, even a 5Ah battery, and everything works flawlessly.
I'm glad that I don't experience two issues usually mentioned in phone reviews - overheating and unreliable fingerprint.
I don't have a chance to really test the camera, though. But on the first sight it looks more promising than I expected. After all, I came from Vivo.

The phone is great, except it kills apps from background too fast. That's a software issue thankfully and can be resolved with a software update.

I've been chatting with Sony support about this and providing whatever videos they ask for as evidence. Hopefully they address the problem since I've given them logcat dumps demonstrating the issue.
I just got info from Sony support today that one of the issues I've reported should be fixed in the Android 13 release due by the end of next week (Dec 23). I'm in the US with the 62 model.
I just flashed the 64.1.A.0.857 via newflasher ...
Downloaded the firmware via XperiFirm.
Device: XQ-CQ54
Merry Christmas everyone ...
I just dirty flashed 64.1.A.0.857 on a rooted XQ-CQ72. No issues so far

For that matter - since Sony openly lets us unlock the bootloader, OFW updates are a full-go for us and won't impede rooting ability, right?

1.- Only for international devices. Sony doesn't allow bootloader unlock for US devices.
2.- As far I know, modified devices (unlocked bootloader) lose OTA. I had to manually update using Xperiafirm and newflasher

By the way, I'm infinitely glad I picked one up in Japan over the US because this scrutiny is ridiculous! That said, I'm not rooted just yet and I'd have to prep a full file (mostly in-phone backup of pics) backup first, so I'm not rooted yet and seems like jumping to 13 first makes the most sense.
That said, I seriously gotta tip my hat to Sony for just allowing us to do entirely as we please with their phones while literally every other brand is cockblocking our freedom. Over the years, I missed having a task killer soooo much to save random background apps slowly tugging at the battery and then all the magisk plugins like ad blockers.
