No. You can use an app such as Swift Backup to make backups of some of your data, but much of the data on your device is inaccessible without root. This includes app data; Android segregates the private data for apps in such a way that no user app can access the private data that belongs to another app. Only some system data is available - call logs, text messages, etc.

Unlock and update to gingerbread without losing data?

Is this possible?
Sorry if the answer is obvious but this forum has gotten messy as hell.

Upgrading to GB possible, but unlocking no. The fastboot oem unlock command wipes data.
titanium back up and my back up root are your friends.
If you are stock 100% and you will do an 100% stock update, I don't think you will loose any data.
But in that case, I don't know if you will be able later to unlock your bootloader if you want.
If you want to unlock your BP and install a custom rom, then read carefully all instructions. In that case you will loose your data. Use titanium backup, to backup, and then restore them back(except fingerprint data - uncheck it)!

Is pro really necessary? I really can't afford it at the moment.
And I have experience with custom roms on other devices. Tried out one of the p-roms a while ago and it was garbage. I'll be waiting for cm7 or MIUI.
I'm also not completely stock, I'm rooted.
Also, does the data wipe include everything but the sd-card?
Also, also, is there a stock gingerbread zip I can flash after the unlocking?

Can Titanium pro backup app's settings?

Pro is not necessary. You can use the free version. The Pro version let's you restore with one click whereas free version wants you to make more clicks. Also, do not backup and restore system data/settings, and only app/data.

I backed up all my apps and system data. after upgrading to gingerbread I chose to restore individual apps. How do I restore my text messages without restoring all my old system data?

Not sure TiBU can.
When I back up, I backup apps/data with tibu and sms/various other stuff with my back up root.
Does anyone know of a stock/rooted gingerbread zip that can be flashed after unlocking?

If you are rooted (to use Titanium Backup), do you lose the root when applying OTA Gingerbread? If so, what's the best way to regain root?

Any chance you can point to a specific thread? There's so much activity going on the Atrix forum right now that it's hard to find things. (Search for "preinstall method" did not yield anything useful.)

download the attached file in post 2 (preinstall.zip or something). Follow the instructions and run the command in post 1 (the last set of commands ,not the first couple that are based on the SBF)

Found it. Had to restore Dialer Storage. Shows up as "[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage" in TiBU.

bootloader unlock and root

Hello a simple question please.
I want only root to delete the att apps, so Its necessary unlock the bootloader or not?
I don't want to install another room, only have root to delete system apps, so, I need to unlock bootloader and next get root or I can get root with the bootloader locked.
thank's in advance.
You just need root. It's also recommended to just "freeze" the apps instead of deleting them. Here's a good root tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255548
To freeze apps you can either pick up an app that does it for you like Titanium Backup but more than likely you'll need a paid app. Or you can just get a file manager that can get root access and find the apps you want to freeze/hide and just add a ".bak" (with the dot) at the end of it.

Yes you can root without unlocking the bootloader.
thank's but using titanium backup is risk free?
thanks!!! for the answer, I was worried if I need to unlock the bootloader first.
so I'm going to use the tool sugested for root, and buy the app titanium backup to freeze.
really apreciated!!!
another question, it's possible that if I freeze a important app (for mistake) and my phone can't turn on???, after restart my phone? or is a risk free using titanium backup??
rom
just be careful what kind of rom you put on i have put the wrong rom on my atris and the ram dropped from 1gb to 370 mb so make sour you put the right one
Well, if you freeze your launcher, you may not be able to launch any app... If you freeze an important system app, you may experience loop force stops which make you unable to do anything.
Always use caution when you are accessing system files on your phone.
Here is a pretty good list of apps that are safe to freeze, it's a little old but it will give you an idea:

Yes be careful when freezing or uninstalling system apps bcoz once i uninstalled a system app on a rom and after the reboot phone was stuck on the boot screen.
I understood
Thank's for all your replies, now I have a idea what to do

Be careful the TWRP for BS series

Avoid and pass by a fool and a madman
Thanks for this warning post. Glad that we only use it in "boot mode" to extract the boot.img, and backup our system partitions, and we don't install it just to make sure things are not touched. The chinese version TWRP can't read Global version's encrypted user data, so it can't install anything on your phone unless you format the user data within TWRP, I guess.

Is it needed to provide our own twrp, which is bulit into all of the global version, with the official TWRP? Are you really need it?

Well, I only use it to backup system partitions of non-rooted phone and nothing else, so if we could find another way to do that then I can easily ditch it. Otherwise it would be nice if we have our own Global TWRP for sure.

Oh.. you're right. It uses different encryption, so it can't approach to userdata. :good:
Just re-lock the critical sections will be good for global users, and it seems that china users need to be careful. And I didn't see it through. I just stopped at the batch files it uses... It can be merely unofficial twrp. Thank you for your great discovery...

To backup device's user-data it's not required that Android is rooted because only READ operation is done. Also when restore backed up user-data it isn't required that Android is rooted, because user-data by default always are stored in READ-WRITE mounted partitions.

Question Restoring hardware completely?

Hi,
I run the pixel 6 and I wondered if I can restore my hardware as an image? I mean, when I used the back up / restore from Google drive , I got my contacts, apps but I still need to re download my apps, choose themes, setup about security, fingerprints, schema, Google pay etc.... Is it possible to skip all those things and upload a complete back up as an image, like I do with openwrt and firmware on router?
Thank you
Short answer: No. Longer answer: You can backup apps and their settings with the likes of Swift Backup, but that requires root and the remaining stuff still needs to be set up again.
Last time I restored my phone through Google I selected to restore all apps/contacts/settings and it basically restored the phone close to 100%. What was left for me to do was minimal.

What I understood finally is we can if we are on Android stable release
if we ever get TWRP as a custom recovery, this will be easy.

I was thinking of something else. My mistake.
edit: @james8076 Even on a full wipe / factory reset most of the settings are restored including downloaded apps from the PS, text and phone logs. What isn't restored is app data like games along with some passwords that are not saved in Google.
@vandyman I used Appdash once but unless you are rooted it will not restore app data if I recall correctly.
The whole restore process isn't as difficult as it used to be even unrooted and bl locked. I can usually do the whole thing after PS downloads the apps in about a half hour or less. But... it's still a pain no doubt about that.
