Hi all,
I ask this question now as I wait for a dev. of ICS for my phone to progress.
Before I bought my phone, I read a review saying that it was one Android version behind but to the reviewer, the version numbers are over-hyped and in reality the phone was great. I should say I bought the phone in August 2010 and it was released May/June that year.
Even reading this, being in this forum, we're a part of a very small per centage of people who understand anything that goes on here, or even the title of this thread. I don't mean that in a -we're brilliant- way, rather that most of us are a little tech-crazy. But do we take it too far? Does 4.0 make your mouth water but 2.1 bores you?
Are there some real benefits to the newer versions? Yes, sure. A few more features, sometimes faster UI, better battery times. I have heard of a few phones out there which had significant benefits and very popular new features e.g. tethering, some camera stuff etc. But beyond this? There is a LOT of gimmicks, crap people like to show off to their friends and all of that, which bored me beyond the age of 20. I got my first phone aged 11. I've been getting phones a few times a year almost every year since. One mega-problem I have with these 'smartphones' is that there have been largely missing basic features which were in the 'feature phones' before them. They've been selling us half-featured phones and dribbling back the rest on 'updates'.
I mean this in a philosophical way - not a critical one. I'm not questioning the validity of this forum (or I wouldn't be here ) and I hope that's clear. What do you all think?

your parents let you have a phone at 11? and then bought you more then one a year since? wow!
Now don't get the impression I'm desperately wealthy!!! My uncle worked in international business and gave me his old one. I remember even at 11 he mentioned things like 'it's not public yet but Ericsson and Sony are going to merge their mobile business' and I was already hooked on business. I bought I think every phone after that myself, no parents!
Every major release usually has an overall system performance improvement.
But other than that it seems to be a hyped up gimmick.
^^^^ That's precisesly what I've been coming to think. Who doesn't want slightly better memory management to improve battery, some features you use etc. but beyond that I'm afriad it's gimmick-central.
I have to add the psychological aspect of this and marketing particularly.
i agree since samsung swcred t-mobile with sidekick 4g with a subpar camera ,froyo , weak processor 1ghz(alot of lags), and no support , meanwhile 3 or 4 months later a bunch of phones comes with better specs at the 99 price range
Bought my phone with 2.1 installed. Used it like that for a week or so then updated to official 2.2. No difference at all.
Then came the 2.3.4. Everything is the same. Then 2.3.7. Same again.
I use my phone as a phone and a navigation device. So these updates do me no good. Release of Navigon for android was big news for me. I can't say the same thing for the 2.3.
Yeah that's pretty the same for me. The few updates I've had have at least speeded boot time and UI lag is less. It actually came with 1.6, upgraded to 2.1 and nothing since. There's a 2 year support for updates says Sony Ericsson, this was before the Google agreement. Like the guy above, an updated version of the phone was released 1 year later with incredible specs for much cheaper, but I paid a lot for it first time around.
I suppose people are used to upgrade their phones without really using them often.

I am at a bit of a loss here. I am an avid Nexus user (see sig below) though i want to like the OnePlus 2 though i keep reading horror stories and concerns about throttling, charging and performance issues over time. It's like they made an awesome phone though failed with the software implementation.
I am hoping like a lot of issues on devices that the XDA community has addressed these problems with a nice Custom ROM..
Can people give me some honest feedback regarding their experiences? I have read a lot of reviews though its all using the Factory ROM. I want to know how good the device can be with a good community rom.
Please let me know thanks very much.

OTP I've had too many small and big problems and bugs, I mean, the phone is usable but doesn't live up to it's specs and hype, software is the worst part of all, and if you are already a nexus user you will find annoying to wait for new versions of Android, also if you're into custom roms you should always stick to nexus.
And de 5X is too expensive for it's built and specs.
I mean personally I would think of other options, the Nexbit Robin seems really nice, or you can wait for the new phones that are coming.

You cannot go wrong with a Nexus - I am a OP 1 and 2 user. Came from Nexus 5(which still works).
OP2 now has everything working Custom ROM's but there are still niggles, which do not hamper you daily use. Community support is almost at par with Nexus. Fingerprint scanner is a bit fickle, I am having mine RMA'ed right now.
On the other hand... 5x is way to expensive for the specs being offered.. You could wait for new lineup this summer.. OP3, Motorola etc..
Obviously opt unless you want to settle for a less specifications mobile device for a higher price.
OP2 has better everything except OTAs which can be fixed with cyanogenmod. I'd pick up the OP2 or wait for the next nexus line.
Op2 is an awesome phone, just flash the latest hydrogen os build on it and compare it with a 5x... Everything in op2 is better even the camera...
Nexus 5X price is a joke. I would buy a N5 for 150$ before N5X lol

I am also very satisfied with my 2. It just works rocking solid. And it has the best fingerprint Sensor out there, i really love it! So fast and accurate if you set it up correct.
But if i were you, i would wait for the 3. It should be out in july, so its not that long. If you want a phone now, just get the 2

op2 has better specs.
5x feels cheaper, cooler, charges faster, has lower memory, lower ram, single sim and has a smaller screen.
both last 4-5hrs sot on my daily usage
personally i have my OPT on sale and have considered getting the nexus 5X instead (been some price drops here in uk). mainly because the OPT software is horrible, heats up quick, sluggish performance on stock rom, even though custom roms significantly improve the device its still doesnt feel like a flagship, i.e. some lag and small bugs here and there. in comparison my dads redmi note 3 and sisters OPO feel faster and snappier in comparison and in my side by side usage there both are smoother while scrolling.
also another thing ... people go crazy about specs and wanting a phone with the best possible hardware but they are forgetting the main thing the user experience. The oneplus 2 is culprit of this as it has the best specs but software is horrible that you are forced to use a custom rom
5x if the price is cheaper depending on your available sources. OPT very prone to fingerprint sensor failure and the RMA process apparently has been a nightmare to those unlucky enough to need a replacement or even any kind of hardware technical support really.
Go with anything other than OPT i regret now buying opt instead of Moto X variants or Nexus variant.
There is little to no support from the company for updates and they dont even release source code in time.
XDA community is there true but still isnt on par with devices who has their source code released.
It's been posted but compare the two and see what ya come out with.. On paper the OP2 is the better phone. I'm glad I got mine. I was down to the Nexus 6 or OP2 and I'm glad I did.
I'm sure your gonna root the thing.. So CM and updates will flow... So yeah.. Get the OP2
And despite what you have been told.. Oxygen 3.0 is a damn nice ROM. I was a slim ROM freak and I'm satisfied and very happy with MM update.. Yeah it's beta but it's rock solid.

A lot of users thinks oneplus2 is failed in China, me too.
Wish Oneplus3 will be better.
I am still with my OPT just because of the ability to use two SIM cards. That's just way more practical for combining work+private SIM. Atleast I prefer it over having to take two phones with me.
So if it wasn't for that, I would still be using my Nexus 5X, since there's just way better software support.
I hope the OnePlus 3 will change that.

The company I work for is very strict on only allowing phones with current security patches to access corporate info. I can't seem to find definitive info on what the latest patch available for the 5X is. Can someone let me know what it is, and where I could find the information later? Does anyone know how long Huawei intend to release security patches for the 5X?
Also, how do people like the phone long term? I have had my last 3 phones (Samsung GalaxyIII, LG G4, LG Nexus5) die prematurely! (Samsung = dead SIM, G4 = dead wifi, Nexus = bootloop). All were run completely stock under minimal use. At this point, I am just looking for an Android phone that doesn't die. Are there any 5X build quality issues people have noticed after long term use?

Honor has shown they release updates less and less. When they release a new model they all but abandon the old one. This phone is all but forgotten by them. They expect you to move on to the 6x if you want updates

I do like the phone though.
I had been drawn to the Huawei as I saw it on a list of companies that are pretty good with patches. Basically, the ONLY reason that I am in the market for a new phone (currently using an old Samsung Alpha which is the best phone I've ever owned) is that I need it to access corporate data. If a patch is released and my company requires it and I don't have it, then I'm blocked from the corporate server. I like the Nexus line for this reason (quickest updates), but the 5 and 5x have this bootloop issue, and the 6 is just too big for my liking.
Thanks for the tip on the Honor 6X. I am leaning that way now.
Huawei/Honor is pushing updates on 3-4 months basis, and you'll probably still be stuck with old patchset. Mine was updated with September patches in November
If your company doesn't mind you running unrooted custom software (like mine does, they don't care what are you running as long as your phone is updated and you don't use warez), grab 5X and move it to LineageOS as soon as possible. 6X will get same treatment 5X is getting now, so if you must keep it stock & updated, better look at other manufacturers with better update history.
It's a pretty solid phone they just released a OTA for the January security patch 351 but you can root and use Lineage OS it's pretty solid. Also they tend to keep the security updates pretty recent and quicker.
As for the phone make sure you get a good solid case don't sit on it or keep in your hip pocket if you squat a lot mine tends to flex some on the housing and the volume rocker area gets bent alil bit. It's no biggy cause you can smush it back flush. Easy to take apart if you ever need to tear it down and you can always grab a extra housing off ebay for 20 bucks or so.
It didn't quite impress me last year since I was coming off a kind of roll where Huawei's Mate2 offered a whole lot of what I as a handset user expected such as OTG, Large screen, snappy response, etc plus for me the Honor 5x WAS Laggy and other occasional issues not experienced with my Mate 2 IMO.
However after returning back to Stock ROM (Factory New Again) recently and reapplying the latest release Marshmallow 6.01 and then pressing ahead with this newest update I am happy to announce that i'm back and pleased to peaches with Honor 5X FINALLY!
I knew this handset had some potential but whatever they did with updates it's for sure now pretty well ironed out as far as I can tell.
Like the above ---> IT IS A SOLID PHONE chalked full of options and very permissions configurable too if you like that about mobiles.
Don't buy the Honor 5X. The Galaxy S5 is way better and about the same price or less. Trust me.... These phones are garbage except for a few areas: Look, style, feel, battery, and camera. But the S5 still beats it in the Camera area. The battery life is fantastic. That's about it though.
The cons?
The speakers is the worst of any phone I've ever owned.
The performance is horrid no matter what ROM you run. <--- main reason I hate it
EMUI is the gayest thing ever.
Basically a very cheap iphone knock-off.

so i already saved up and was going to buy the Pocophone but people on random groups keep saying that it has a ton of issues and the company is just gonna pull it out of the market, so did anyone face major issues or problem during the his/her usage of the phone?
It's a great phone for very little money, go with unlocked bootloader and install xiaomi.eu rom and you won't regret it.

US user here. I got the Poco F1 last week, and the only issues have been bloatware, which can be removed is you have the know how, compatible screen protectors and cases. My unit doesn't have detectable screen bleeding at the bottom. Overall, this phone has been a great buy and other than more LTE bands for the US (getting abysmal 3mbps or less download and maybe half that for upload) I cant ask for much more than what they've given since I have wifi most places i go.

It's a great phone, When I was going for it I had my doubts that if I need to pick this or Mi 8 and I thought there will be some corner cuts to make it possible but there wasn't and for $300 I haven't seen any flaw, Yes some units are faulty like screen bleeding or some touch issue ( which seems to be a software ) but overall this phone is offering much more than its price range and overall I'm happy with my purchase.
It is a generation 1 product of a start-up company so expect bugs in its software. You should know that you are investing more on hardware than its software, the software improvements will come later but to tell you, the updates and fixes were not that fast like Apple-update patch fast but it is definitely better on Samsungs top-of-the-line midrange. This is what I noticed with Xiaomi devices that I've owned. If you want slightly faster updates then buy Mi flagship of Xiaomi for better priority on Software Development or else consider buying Honor or Nokia 8, weigh them based on your needs, NOT based onhow much money you can shell-out.
One of the best reviews to watch for were from JerryRigEverything, GSMArena Reviews and Notebookcheck (I like notebook check reviews). Do your own homework to make your expectations real and NOT hyped.

software bugs are everywhere thats fine for me, but i heard some faulty batteries, screens, touch delays and so on, thats why i wanted to make sure before buying from actual users of the phone

Have serious problems with the built-in mic (not tested with headset).
Try using a video call app like Line App, place the phone in front of you facing the front camera towards you so the other person can see you. That works, but the other person can't hear you, and the sound stream is interrupted with sections skipped.
Possibly due to the noise cancellation (ro.qc.sdk.audio fluence), bad MIUI software version, bad mic hardware(bad component model in the entire production batch), bad... you name it.
Need root, custom rom, build.prop etc file editing, remove mic dust protection hw component, etc...
Really disappointed about this, hope they can fix it with a simple OTA upgrade, but it's really annoying.
Also Xiaomi seems to refuse openly cooperating with companies like Teamviewer to support remote control for support applications, etc. They said it was open and developer friendly ?
Hi, I've had Moto phones like the Razr-i, G4 Play, and G7 Play but am growing unhappy with their limited security updates. I worry more about being up to date with security patches as there is always more news about exploits. I'm not familiar with OnePlus. Are they consistent about security updates? I see a claim of more years of support, but wonder how it works in practice for the budget models. In my experience, Moto has been pretty lackluster in pushing updates even before the 2 year window expires.
Has anybody here also used budget Moto phones and already switched to the N200 5G? How much difference would I find using this phone?
As my username says, I am a light user of Android. I mostly use it to glance at the Google Calendar, Slack notifications, and calls and SMS. I use desktop and laptop computers for most of my regular email, web browsing, etc. But, I've noticed that it is hard to read web pages on a 720 pixel wide screen because it is fuzzy if you scale so that the whole page fits. I also see it stutter, and assume this is because my current phone only has 2GB RAM.
I disable the Google assistant and actually want a phone to be more like an idle pocket computer, not a busy bee trying to be clever and annoying me with suggestions, integrations, etc. I have been able to configure the Moto launcher to be boring like that. Can that be done with the N200 or would I need to install Nova launcher or something?
I use Mint, a T-Mobile MVNO and care about stability for calls with both VoLTE and WiFi Calling. I don't really care about 5G speeds vs LTE but would hope it makes the cell connectivity more stable rather than less?

Huh... you don't think the N200 will get regular updates? Or are you saying OnePllus doesn't provide good security even if it is up to date? Do you think OnePlus is less secure than Moto or the same?
I feel like the pixels are in a different price bracket.
I'm just gonna point out that OnePlus is a Chinese company, and uses an Android OS variant made in China.
Chinese companies are not exactly known for keeping other countries (or their own) personal data secure (quite the opposite).
Take that how you will.
Hmm, do people think OnePlus is any less secure than Moto? Moto is also a Chinese company (part of Lenovo).
I find this hard to sort out.... those factories have to be trusted to put together the hardware and image the firmware. Even the pixel phones are made there, aren't they? If you go down this path questioning it, why assume that any software update afterwards can secure it, if the origin is murky? :-/
Edit: I've wondered the same thing about used phones and how permanently someone can tamper with it. That's one reason I am buying new budget phones and wondering about the N200 versus the Motos!

yes, stables calls and connectivity in Los Angeles area with Tmobile. As of the time of this writing its on July Security Patch. If you are worried aobut exploits and want the latest patches it best to just go with a official google supported phone the like Pixel series or a Iphone as they keep up to date with security patches on their latest devices.
In my experiance if you just want it for calls and text and the like you should be ok. I just came off a pixel 3a for this phone and before that I did the samsung s thing and before that the motorola cliq series. Am I totally thrilled with the phone? No, it's a budget phone that runs better than any other budget phone I have seen, however, it is still a budget phone My hope is that as soon as we can get root that the phone will rock due to it actually having decent hardware. So it's more of an expectation thing. Sounds like it will be fine for your use case, Good readability screen and enough horsepower for what your doing.

I got the n200 because of "free" from tmo, it's not what im used to thought. This phone is weak and slow and 5G/wifi speeds suck.
If those basic functions are sooo weak and you oneplus officially said: 1 major upgrade of the OS, you just know this little weak guy doesn't have a long life in the security updates either

I've got the unlocked variant from the OnePlus store. I got an update on August 4th with the July 2021 security patch, so that's what I have now. Before that, I had the 2021-04-01 update.
I'm going to join in and *not* recommend OnePlus for light android users. They don't have a great long-term update policy - see articles like https://www.androidpolice.com/2021/...e-commitment-is-uninspiring-yet-unsurprising/. They also anecdotally don't have a great support team, and don't deal with factory-broken hardware well (for example, the microphone issues with the OnePlus One which left many users without a very inconsistent microphone when making calls on phone speakers or speakerphone).
The reason the community likes OnePlus is not their updates, though. It's the custom ROM community: every OnePlus phone has its ROM released, and has an unlockable bootloader.
What this means is *if you're willing to install a custom ROM*, you're almost guaranteed the community - XDA forums and the like - will provide updates above and beyond the product's lifetime. With this, for example, the OnePlus One, released in 2014, still has new community-based updates today! See threads like https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...1-july-10th-lineageos-17-1-june-11th.3693223/.
This also means you get a guaranteed ability to root the phone, and thus can change and optimize the OS for your usage.
To be clear, if you're willing to use comumunity-produced ROMs, and understand the benefits and drawbocks of that, OnePlus phones are great. Lots of people will be drawn to them, similar to google phones, and you'll get software for into the future at the cost of having to rely on builds provided by strangers on the internet.
If you aren't, or have never installed a custom ROM and would rather not, don't get OnePlus. The three things they've had going for the are: custom ROMs, hardware that's specced above what you'd expect at the price point, and marketing. Software is not their strong suite.
I really like the Nord N200's hardware design, it's great bang-for-buck, and it seems quite sturdy. But people have *already* reported microphone issues when using cases which with OnePlus's track record will probably never be fixed unless you apply the fix yourself as part of a custom ROM, and you won't be happy 2 or 3 years down the road when your options are to run an outdated OS or rely on strangers online to provide custom OS builds with no guaranteed support or bugfixes, and which automatically void your warranty when installed.

the ATLEAST "one major update" will probably be a jump to the next major android version, however the " regular maintenance updates" will be the regular security patches that they most likely roll out in a timely fashion as they are known to do usually. It sounds like it will be s supported just like any other oneplus phone in my opinion. The hardware is decent for the price and considering its free from tmobile (cant beat that), its actually runs everything fine including all the games ive played just fine (Call of Duty , CLASH OF CLANS), the only super major weak disaappointment is the camera, considering Xiaomi can make sub $250 budget phones with a impressive budget camera, it puts the N200 camera to shame. I dont know your 5G test environment but in Los Angeles where i am, if i lock onto the same 5G bands as my friends Iphone 12,, i actually get better 5G speeds than my friend who has a Iphone 12 Max. WiFi speeds seem normal to me, but then again i am only 10-15 feet away from the router most of the times.

Sorry, I'm just a user looking at my G7 Play which says "your software is up to date" and a February patch level, and finding only disappointment when I look at the available replacements and consider how soon I'll see this again...
Thanks all! I guess I am hearing the message that I need to either adjust my belief about what "budget" means (to consider Pixels etc) or accept that security is not included at the budget level...
