my s23 ultra has screen door effect only in low light scenes in movies or photos when it's any shade above pure black. it's very hard to capture using my friend's phone (I need a magnifying glass tbh )
I hope it's a display driver issue or gamma issue or whatever that can be fixed via software update. I'd hate to return it. is this effect natural on AMOLED displays and I'm going crazy thinking it's a fault? my friend can't perceive it. but dragging a dark photo around there's an overlay of a grid. it makes the screen look low res.

see? it's so ugly and distracting. like CRT scan lines or something. is it a subpixel issue? one of them can't effectively dim like the others causing visible lines?
I tried all possible settings on my S23 Ultra: Extra Brightness, Adaptive, Motion Smoothness... This doesn't happen to me. Maybe you got a bad unit. I suggest you RMA it since it definitely looks like a factory issue to me.

what's annoying to me is they'll make me factory reset it before sending it in to be assessed right? my data isn't backed up I just use Smart switch. so I'd want a temporary handset in the interim to store my data on. will they offer that? and is it possible they'll only offer the display itself to be replaced or a replacement unit (a refurbished one instead of brand new factory sealed in its box)
I'm in Australia so if you could explain what you know about the returns process that'd be helpful.
live chat said they only accept returns if it's unopened.

Actually, no. You won't have to factory reset it this time
OneUI 5.1 (which is pre-installed on the S23 Ultra) comes with a new cool feature called "Maintenance Mode".
Check under Settings -> Battery and Device Care -> Maintenance Mode. This will lock the data on your device so that you won't need to reset it when sending it for maintenance. Check this Samsung Support article for additional info.
Since it's a new device, I believe that you should go to a physical Samsung Experience Store or an official Samsung Assistance point, explain the issue, put your device in Maintenance Mode and hand it over for the assessment.
It should take 10mins or so.
They should replace it with a new device and after disabling the Maintenance Mode, they should help you migrate your data. If they choose to repair it instead, your data will be safe and inaccessible to them. Not sure if they'll provide you with a temp phone in the meantime.

I'm having display issue on my tab that was purchase as refurbished unit about a year ago. It was working fine last night and I turn it on this morning and it is completely jumbled
even with this messed up screen, it can still detect internet, login with my pw etc.
It also seems that screen doesn't flicker in portrait mode while it flickers in landscape mode
As far as I can tell, it seems like the displace has become out of sync (like how you monitor behaves if you have strong magnet near by)

anyone have any suggestion to fix this? Like hard reset on the display or recalibration method?
Could you resize your photos? They are HUGE!
Was your Tab left plugged in to charge all night? If so maybe a power surge happened? I'm not sure if it can be fixed. I'm sure there are experts here that will chime in! Good luck!
it was not left plugged in...
if it was power surge, more than just display would go
guess XDA doesn't have many HW experts?

There's no need to be rude. It's the weekend and people are busy. You need to be patient. Resizing your enormous photos so they are easily viewable might help too.

does most people read this forum using 3G connections? no one has ever ask to resize 3 photos taken from my phone camera on any forums. They are 3MB per picture. Is that considered big in this forum?
It happened out of the blue, so it appears to be a hardware issue. Better contact Samsung, as it may not be easy to fix.

It isn't the file size, it's the resolution itself. Even on my 1080p desktop, they are nearly twice as wide as the monitor.
Make sure to resize them to a "standard" resolution.

Your tab has secretly been dropping acid?
Seriously though, this looks a bit like an issue a Samsung TV my parents own developed.
The fault was determined to either be the LCD panel itself or the cable connecting to it but since the two were one integral piece and the TC was out of warranty, it was cheaper to replace it than try and have it fixed, so we never got to the bottom of it.
If your tab's still under warranty, you'd be best sending it back to Samsung and letting them have a look.
I've a zenwatch 2
Recently I've noticed that there is a shadow on the screen, to discover then that maybe some pixels have died !!!!!!!!!
I've returned to dev. options and find the screen burn in protection disabled, enabled it and after restart returned to the dev. options and it's disabled again.
Tried to snap some photos, you can notice the circle in the middle :S

Have you tried setting "Always On Screen" to off. I disabled ambient mode to save battery, but it ends up leaving the display on for no more than a few minutes a day. That should practically eliminate burn-in.
Mine has the same problem, nothing is working, I have no idea how to fix
OLED displays are prone to this. I have an old Galaxy S2 that I used as a desk clock for a while, and it now has a clock pattern burned into it that shows up on very light screens. Note that while the underlying cause of OLED burn in is different from CRTs, the effect is similar. The pixels are permanently dimmer because they are dying faster.
The only "fix" is to display a negative image for a while until the rest of the screen "burns in" to match, which might be some trick on a smart watch (and it's not easy on a phone), so it's probably just stuck there. Also, even if you eliminate the burn-in, all you have really done is shortened the life of the remaining pixels. I'd just choose a similar face that tends to hide the issue and move on.
The only solution is to not have a static image on the screen for very long. For watches, this means letting the display turn off instead of keeping it on all the time.
Thanks all

I had to send mine in for warranty repair. This started after about four months use, without the always on screen. I just got it back, it took them about two weeks, but they replaced the screen, and it's good as new. I was hoping they'd load it with Wear 2.0 before they sent it back, but no such luck.

Hello,
I have recently purchased XZ1 and using it around month.
While using the phone I noticed the "Image retention" at the soft-navigation key and top-notification bar.
I immediately fired diagnostic app and saw serious burn-in marks.
I am using this phone around 1 month with brightness less than 25% and
with automatic brightness enabled and without much heavy usage.

Screen burn
Yes I have screen burn too
that's not screen burn-in. that's "dirty screen effect" or panel uniformity problems common to LCD's. it's caused by various pressure points along the panel edges. burn-in, on OLEDs, would manifest as say, the Android back/home/multitasking buttons at the bottom of the screen having a ghostly image present no matter what else was on the screen.

This is image retention. You can easily spot the navbar.
Edit: let me be more specific. The original topic title is not correct, as burn in is OLED typical issue, it's permanent and caused by OLED consuming itself where brighter images are shown.
What we are experiencing here, given we are talking of IPS panel, is image retention. The screen gets a temporary shadow of what was previously showed. Pretty common in IPS displays, yes it's transient but this should not be the case for a TOP TIER device.
As a reference I took a cheap Moto G5: guess what? No retention.
IMHO, this is Sony's fault, bad choice in IPS panel.

I'm still deciding what to do with the phone. I could obtain a refund from Amazon, but sincerely I don't know which phone can pair the XZ1 in terms of size and performance (screen apart).
Mine is brand new and has nothing of those spots. Does it start to appear after months? How was yours when they were brand new?

Mine started to appear around a month.
It was fine when it was brand new.
Image retention takes time to appear.
Found out that the retention mostly happens with solid black color (like the navbar), while solid white tends to remove it in some seconds.
My workaround is to install Navbar Apps from PlayStore, customize your navbar to show a light grey navbar (mine is #bcbcbc hex color) and the retention will not be a problem anymore.
A better solution would be to have a solid white bar, but it's ugly and the buttons become invisible. The best solution is a permanently transparent navbar, but AFAIK this is possible only with root.
Then I have combined the navbar customization with selective Immersive mode for the apps that I use most: using Tasker and Custom Navigation Bar I have enabled immersive mode for apps like Chrome and Spotify, so I will not be annoyed while using them.
Hello all,
Last night I watched a show on my tablet in total darkness and noticed some weird banding which I thought was caused by the video itself but then I checked with the other apps and it was clear that it wasn't the video but the screen itself. Is my tab screen faulty? It's just over 3 weeks old for God's sake! Is anyone else experiencing the same issue or am I the only one?
Taken using night mode so as to highlighted the areas

those look like window reflections. Make a drawing, fill the entire screen with solid black, do you still see the banding? Do you have blue light filter on? If you still see it and you don't have any filters and you're sure it's not reflections, return it.
At low Brightness with night mode on mine is a bit patchy but yours seems worse. If it bothers you I would exchange and see if you get better luck next time
mine is solid black no pathing

Lowest brightness yes. Blue light no. I never use that. I surely would never use with video
I watch on mine in dark, complete black the screen is, no bleed etc.
Return it.
Hmmm I'm noticing similar to mine now even without blue light filter and normal brightness
Hey guys. Just an update. It's a bit of a long story but the tl;dr version is that I have got a new Tab S6 today and guess what? The same screen-bleed issue but on a different part of the screen.

I phoned the Samsung shop team and they were extremely helpful and arranged a replacement. However, I am very disappointed with the quality control. Does anyone know how I can raise this with Samsung so that something would be done at a higher level i.e. maybe there is a faulty batch or something?
Is that right from a factory reset without installing or restoring any apps? I have to wonder at this point if it's some software, These are amoled screens, there shouldn't be any bleed, there's no backlight. While some pixels can definitely fail what you're seeing on 2 tablets seems highly unlikely not random across the screen. Only other thing I can think of is you have something putting undue pressure on parts of the screen.

No. The pictures above are of the replacement tablet. I hadn't had the chance to transfer my settings or anything so it's factory formatted. All I did was turn on night mode at night and start the dialer app as well as other Samsung apps. Even the keyboard is brighter on one side than the other. I asked the other half to look and point out anything odd and she spotted it straightaway.
The tablet was literally out of the box. Barely stayed out of the box for an hour and there was nothing else pressed against it at all.

It's not bleed it's just uneven tints on the screen, very common and annoying as heck.
wow I've never seen anything like that on an oled or amoled screen. I have the S2,S3, S4, note 8, note 10+ and LG Oled and never seen anything even close.
What you have with the white, doesn't surprise me as much as the black as with black the pixels should be OFF.
The mate 20 pro was plagued with green screens like that. I believe they were lg oleds

By the way it's not pure black backgrounds, more dark greys, mine is similar and I believe they will all have it to some degree, seems to be a short coming with oled..it's only noticeable when displaying certain types of greys, at very low brightness, even worse with blue light filter on
Somewhat similar to what I'm experiencing, uneven black levels from corner to corner.
I'll try and get a replacement from the retailer, they give 30 days to return items so it shouldn't be an issue hopefully.
It's not awful, but once you notice it, you always notice it.
I have also the same, verry annoying. And for that price i espect something that works.

You can see which color is most effected. The blue pixels tend to wear out first on AMOLED displays, red last.

AMOLED technology is completely different than LCD. Samsung can make superb AMOLED displays. This heavily used N10+ shows no signs of display degradation. How they used also matters as they have a finite lifespan; the brighter they run, the faster they degrade.
Given that you could replace the phone for the cost of the display almost I would simply ignore it for the time being. Then grab a good used phone of your liking when the opportunity arises.

for now i have ignore this watermark static object image behind screen , i have enable night mode black but i'am sure this object image is not related with the screen it's same where that sumsung have put as code binary inside chip . because mine was retail demo unit not for sale.
so if it was the screen so no tactil or fingerprint or other will work but my case all thing work just this stupid shadow image static that follow phone every where. only when i reboot the phone on sumsung logo with dark background i didn't saw.
maybe developer can found a solution for this burn in screen removal.
because all samsung center want only change parts.
