Hey all, so straightforward question here. I've read up many guides on how to install a GSI, but how would I go about getting back to stock, especially since some of the guides involve resizing the product partition. Also is there an unbrick tool available in case I do anything major? Something like the Oneplus MSMTool, I'm really thinking about being able to get back to stock from the factory, since I'm worried about OEM unlocking possibly ruining WideVine L1 forever. Thanks in advance for any help!

Flash Stock back. Or Flash Super partition back if you dump it and kept before.

This is my first android phone, so this is probably a really dumb question...
But from my over 6 years of experience with customizing smartphones (they where still called PDAs or Pocket-PCs back than hehe) I learned one important rule: Always back up everything you need to get it back to stock settings, in case you ever need to RMA it.
I just spend a full evening on research, but it seems like its really not possible to backup the system without voiding the warranty aka rooting the phone. Is that right? Since I have a very peculiar item to start with, a Huawei u8160 aka Vodafone 858 smart with a Swisscom branded Rom, its impossible to find that particular rom on the net. I guess I can always go with a Vodafone stock rom and return it directly to Huawei instead of Swisscom, but than again: will those roms be unrooted? If so, how did anyone acquire them?
Once I am sure I have no chance anyway, I can go on rooting the phone with a clear conscience. But if there is a chance to get that stock rom saved first, I would be a little more relaxed with future customization.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
The only way to backup your System is a custom-recovery. I'm sure, you will find it here on XDA.
This might help you get in the right direction

OK, I will try to place the CWM recovery.img on the phone via fastboot.exe as described here.
Hope this works out In either case: Thank you for the hints!
Worked. I guess this didn't fullfill the whole idea of backing up everything before editing anything, since I have overwritten the stock-recovery. But whatever. Phone is rooted now and I am ready to dive in.
Cheers
Hello
I was a former owner of LG Nitro HD P930 and I was trying to unlock its ICS Bootloader (to install recovery) but ended up destroying the boot partition, getting it hard bricked. Luckily it was under warranty and technicians couldn't fix it, meaning they couldn't even find out what was wrong so I got free replacement...
Anyway, I am getting Galaxy S3 LTE soon and just wondering if the S3 's boot partition can also be destroyed by any chance. I would like to avoid making the same mistake.
Any other advice on strictly what NOT to do is also welcome.
I'm only going to install CM using the new CM Installer and that's pretty much it. No custom kernels. Nothing to do with bootloader...

Yea you can, the possibility exists. Samsung does change bootloader from time to time on the i9300 (don't follow the i9305, im going to assume it's not much different). You're not required to mess with bootloader most of the times but people do have reasons to change/not change it. All you need to have a problem with a bootloader is to fail a bootloader flash. Suppose you can even overwrite it with something else or have physical problems in your internal memory.
Afaik, there were some shady ways to reflash it back booting from an sd but i believe it's general acceptance you're screwed and will have to send the phone to service.
That said, the bootloader is small so it's flashed quickly. It's kind of rare for people have problems. /efs problems are FAR more common.
i9300 bootloader is not 'locked' so you don't need to do anything to it. i9305 is similar but not exact, don't get confused.
Suggest you go read the basics in general forum, if you want to avoid bricking your new phone.

I am currently on a galaxy s4, just started messing around with android a little. I am interested in switching to a slightly newer phone. Assuming I get a g3 that is on the latest OTA update, is it possible to unlock the bootloader or install any type of custom recovery? I am interested in flashing different roms, which I currently can't do on my verizon OF1 S4. If I can't on this phone, what about a g4? I am really only interested in phones with user replaceable batteries that I can swap out, so my options are somewhat limited. Thanks for any help.
James.
I got a G3 that was on 35B -- which I believe is the latest version. You pretty much have to TOT back to 10B (see the thread regarding flashing back to stock), and then you can root, install TWRP, etc from there. Once you've got that, you can pretty much do what you want.
Personally, I had some fussing about with USB device drivers and so on -- I think it took me more time to get the device properly recognized in windows than any other parts of the process!
You'll notice that there are various different ROMS, some based on stock and some that are AOSP, Cyanogen, etc...

Hey, thanks for the quick reply. That is excellent news. Sealed the deal for me, I will be buying this phone sometime this weekend. Not familiar with any of the LG tools, or this TOT method you mentioned, so I will read through the threads carefully. Thanks again.
Sure thing!
back to stock, using TOT is this thread.
To get back to 10B from 35B you'll need the dll file in here
Once I was back at 10B, I used stumproot to get root and then used adb to push a bumped TWRP onto the device.
Other tip: Backup your phone's EFS partition before you do too much, you want to keep a copy of that around just in case...

just to clarify what was said,
there is NO way to unlock the bootloader
there is a bypass called Bump, similar to loki, but not. yes, you can do anything you would with a real unlock, but we also have no fastboot, and thats not fixable.
if this is ever effectively patched, and you take the update, flashing roms is over.
just wanted to make sure you understood, there was no true unlock.
Hey guys, as much as I love my 5 plus, there's a chance in the near future I may be jumping over to the MI 9 Lite. Although I don't know if I'll get a lot of money out of this older phone, I am still interested in selling it.
It seems to be my understanding that if I plan on selling the phone, it would be best to revert it to stock Miui and, more importantly, relocking the bootloader to avoid the new user from having any issues unlocking/relocking if I am not mistaken. Although I think I have a general idea on how this would all work using miflash, I am not 100% sure on the process and would really not like to hard brick my phone. I am currently running the most recent havok rom and have orange fox recovery installed. I'm hoping maybe someone could explain or point me in the right direction on getting this done correctly. Thank you!
i also have the same plan too..
once i remember flashing using mi flash and if i'am not mistaken there is an option to re-lock the bootloader as well

I just got done doing it. It's pretty easy.
https://c.mi.com/us/miuidownload/detail?guide=2
Pretty much followed that for getting the fastboot file.
If you do this, keep in mind the first boot-up after the initial flash will take a few minutes or more to load.
Alright, I've received the email as the title implies but here are the questions I have before I proceed into the whole process
Is there a way to backup the stock image without TWRP? if so how do you get the stock image backed up if it's impossible how to back up the stock bootlover/recovery before installing TWRP if I were to get rid of TWRP one day?
also is it possible to just root the system without flashing anything to avoid data loss? this would be the preferred option actually, thanks! (Using the be2028 t-mobile version, if there's a premade backup that'll be cool too.)

I am just getting back to messing around with phones after about 5 years. So many things have changed and I am trying to get answers here as well.
I used TWRP and Magisk to root my phone. Installing TWRP will not wipe your data as it is flashed to a different partition but to install TWRP you have to unlock the bootloader and that will wipe your userdata. And no, I don't believe there is any possibility of rooting without unlocking the bootloader. If you decide you want to go back to stock, there are stock roms available and you can re-lock the bootloader on the N10 so you should be able to set it back to just like it was when you first bought it. I say should because I have never done it, just read that it can be done when I unlocked and flashed mine.
I wish I could be of more help but so many things have changed in the years since I've been away from doing this stuff I feel like a total noob again.

No I do not believe there's a way to gain root without flashing anything. There's no need to backup anything you can always use the MSM download tool to restore your device. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...l-to-restore-your-device-to-oxygenos.4204445/ You should be able to find most of the stock imgs on here already if you'd really need to flash back. I'm no expert either, just my experience with this phone in particular has been pretty straightforward. I never backed up anything lol.
Twrp is iffy i made a backup I'll never use, check out the post about flashing international rom to tmo and metro devices, that's my backup. Also you can run 11.0.3/2 firmware and boot 11 gsi's the post about lir rom has the info. Flash the product_gsi.img referenced there, I have never deleted my product partition and I only leave oos ten installed long enough to take ota's. There are more roms in the source forge page referenced with lir rom post. Flash magisk via recovery, either side load or twrp, pay attention that it flashes partition sda14(super image) or wifi breaks.
