Can the AT&T SX 56 be used as a modem? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I Road Runner cable which is very expensive and would like to get rid of it in favor of a cheaper solution. I noticed cellular providers have add on unlimited internet plans for approx $19.
Can the AT&T SX 56 be used as a modem?
What tools (ie software/cables etc.) would allow me to be able to use the internet from my desktop.
Also can anyone translate (without being technical) what the speed of GPRS is compared to cable?

how to make it be a modem
http://xda-developers.com/modem/
http://www.sourceo2.com/NR/rdonlyre...5e3iadmr2qr6kna/CTS1299-1+Setup+Xda+Modem.PDF
about the speed then
it's en theory suppose to reach 107 kb/s though to me it seems slower then 56K

Hmmm! more trouble than its worth
making modem capable is trouble than its worth. I intended to use it at home as an internet "pass through" since addon internet service plan is only $19 which is much cheaper than cable($50).

Cheap GPRS

I've been happily using my XDA for almost a year now, the only complaint being the amount i spend on the GPRS though O2.
What are the other UK networks charging these days? I've heard about others charging as little as £10 for 100MB's, is this true?
I'm about to come to the end of my contract and will be getting an XDA II as soon as it does but i may well get it sim-free and go with another network.
Do i have other options i.e. sticking in a pay-as-you-go sim from another network when i want to use it heavily?
Thanks for your help.
i think the problem may be when you dont say where you are from
the only company's which people can be sure are represented most places are fodaphone, tmobile, o2 and orange and maybe a few others
and those are rearely the cheap ones
oop's sorry. I'm in the UK
t-mobile in usa - $19 a month - unlimited gprs
(not that that would help you 2000+ miles away)

mario,
how do you find the gprs speed thru tmobile?
they say its 40k-80k
but i dont think thats true... it takes me too long to download a small 500k file. unless im doin something wrong!
do u have special settings?
to find the actual speed, i have no idea
the only settings i have, is for the gprs setting, it connects to internet2.voicestream.com
speed is up and down usually, right near a atenna (like near a mall or what not) perfect speed.
at work is another question... with 1 bar of signal i can stream 22k mp3s from di.fm (requires ipv6 which tmobile or ie for pocket pc comes with, cause it works)
work is a office full of computers, in a big brick building... signal is allways bad indoors.

Newbie Question about isp

Can someone recommend a cheap isp in the usa for dial up access on my tmobile xda ? Thanks in advance Tim
hhmmm why bothers grps is easier
and faster i think but often more expensive though
I would say that T-mobile IS your ISP. Using GPRS you use T-Mobile to access the internet. I believe they also have email support (though I use POP3/IMAP support through work). And, I'm not sure that it is true with ALL plans, but unlimited internet access through GPRS is free with most plans - it is with mine!
i pay about 3$ for each MB i use

[Q] whats the best Uk network for S2?

As the Thread title suggests, i would like to know what the best UK network for the S2 is? I have an order on hold with orange at the moment for £35p/m
after screening the forums a little bit it seems that orange isnt the best network provider to go with, because although coverage is great, their network speeds are rubbish...what would you guys recommend in terms of best network provider for this phone?
ps bear in mind i am in the london and braintree areas quite a lot
the million pound question??. Am O2 I think internet speed rubbish I have never seen 3g icon on my screen lol
as far as i have been able to read, vodaphone seem to utilize the s2's networking capabilities best,
reading on the general section, i found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14400787&postcount=30
in the thread "SGS2 now available on orange UK"
which made me wonder - three mobile seem to have good deals for cheapness....£26pm gets you a free phone, 1gb data, unlim texts etc, so i would go for them, however the network speed is something i have recently been coveting....anyone had any speedtests done while on three?
Well my contract with orange UK (that you wont be able to match as I am a special customer....very long story...) is
Dolphin 35 + 1gb extra data for £20 a month 18 month contract with a free SGS2
Just waiting for the SGS2 to be ordered as they screwed up!!!!

im jealous i must admit, but what about networking speeds? or do you cope just fine with the speeds as they are? this phone is capable of loading faster than most home broadbands if i believe what iv been told...i cant tell what speeds i have as my hd2 wont connect to the internet - hardware issue :/

Best network is relative to signal strength in the areas of phone use for each network .
Data its always said that 3 are best for data true not a clue .

Three are the only network that offer truly unlimited data on the one plan with a free phone for £40 I think. I've seen my mate's speedtest with a Desire HD consistently hitting 9+ mb the past month as they've activated the HSPA+ network. Three's signal is crap indoors though, due to the part of the spectrum they use not penetrating buildings well (so I'm told).
I'm on O2 (central London), I'm guaranteed H or H+ signals, consistently above 3 mbps.
Well, if you care about heavy duty data usage, go with 3 (So long as you're in an area with decent signal - it gets a bit ropy up north).
I'm with 3UK, purely for the genuinely unlimited data (although I've been with them for years and always went over the 1gb limit without charge before), in London their speeds are great, usually have a ping under 100, down of 3-5 in perfect conditions, up of 1-1.5 (via the SpeedTest app)
I will say in the area i live (oxfordshie) 3 is exelent,i get hsdpa just about every where. I get 5700 on speed test app at work-on vodafone and orange i get 20
three mobile it is then i will go to the three store and pick it up (because i cannot wait for it to be delivered lol) once i get my new bank card and PIN code through
Yup, I'm on Three also and whilst their results vary (I get anywhere from 0.11 to 5.14Mbps Download speed here in Cumbria!) the main selling point for me is truly unlimited data on the One Plan with tethering allowed! There may be others offering true unlimited data (talkmobile? Giff Gaff?) but I don't think others allow tethering... I should note they acknowledge that they throttle their data at peek times (6pm to midnight) but I'd be surprised if other networks don't do the same, and my data speeds are generally fine.
I'm on 3 and its crap indoors. Do get 3g a lot. I buy the fone instead of contract because u pay for another fone as the contracts are like 2 year plans. Im on a SIM contract for 15 quid and get 600mins 1 gb internet 3000texts which is good but hate the signal
I was with three but dropped them because of awful building penetration, their signal is just rubbish indoors which was no good to me at work when my phone spent all day trying to cling onto a scrap of signal. I could receive texts at my desk but if I moved the phone or tryed a voice call it would drop signal altogether.
Moved to Orange, very happy now. Speeds aren't as fast as Three for data but come on, what are you doing running torrents off your phone or something?

[Q] 3G: Simple Mobile vs T-mobile

I'm currently using Simple Mobile with $ 40 3G plan and my maximum 3G speed is 100 kbs. I know Simple Mobile is dependent on T-mobile's 3G tower but it seems Simple Mobile is slow for me.
I plan to switch to $ 50 data plan of T-mobile.
T-mobile users, what are the current maximum and minimum 3G speed of T-mobile ?
Depending on where you are, it should be a hell of a lot more than 100 kbps. T-Mo's HSPA+ areas theoretically can go up to 42 Mbps. My last few speedtests on the Vibrant (KB5 modem) in Mbps:
5.48 down 1.33 up
5.42 down 1.61 up
6.18 down, .41 up
3.98 down, .66 up
5.09 down, .38 up
3.90 down, 1.30 up

T-Mobile averages around 1-3 MBPS for me, and Simple Mobile always averages around 100 KBPS for me as well.

what's the advantage and disadvantage in using KB5 modem?
does KB5 modem increase 3G speeds in my simple mobile?
I too have let my contract expire with T-Mobile and went on with Simple Mobile, However I haven't seen any real difference between the two, meaning that T-Mobile was always slow for me and no matter what modems or configurations I tried, I never got the speed that others here are saying we should be getting.
Simple Mobile is using the same bandwidth as T-Mobile, because it is T-Mobile, so unless there was throttling or bandwidth restrictions that T-Mobile is implementing, based on the royalties or amount they pay T-mobile!!
Technically It should be the same as what the T-Mobile customers are getting, and In my case, I'm still getting the same ole slow assed data, that I had before when I was paying alot more to T-Mobile, I've been looking for a Holly Grail of tweaks, that might get my phone into the data performance I know Its capable of, but as of this moment, and after all this time, its still no better than Dial up, the only difference is I'm paying alot less than I was with TM.
Would love to find tweaks or configurations for my T959, that opens it up to some serious speed. And No I never DL anything enough month to month wise, to have them impose a CAP. But I'm so used to lag and poor performance, and the fact, that I wont ever go back to a CDMA provider again, So I'm stuck, unless I switch providers, like ATT which is serious $$, otherwise It would mean, putting my Vibrant in mothballs, And I love this phone, It takes the burden of running a laptop I used to need, to do the very same things I now accomplish with this phone, and simplifying my life, but with slow speed= Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!
Im also really interested to know!
Ok first thing first.
Both Tmobile and Simple Mobile does not provide unlimited 3g,
Tmobile (prepaid service that i use for 50 a month, a plan of relevance to the OP), provides 200mb of 3g service,
in this case, i would get 3mb speed, yet after the 200mb, they limit your service to 100 kbp range,
I have never used simple moblie before but i believe they use the same tower and provide more data, 2gig, and also cheaper,
so can someone tell me what varied data speed one would get for simple?
within 2 gig and after the capped data speed, thanx

I personally have been with simple for about a yr on both 4g and 3g speeds capped and uncapped
usually after you tether usb or wifi they will throttle you like almost that week and wont even know unless u call to be like wth
4g speeds are about the same as t-mobile
3g speeds are about 0.12Mbps even after changing from JK6 testing with different build props KA7 with different build props and even KB5 with different build props
For the most part i have been on these roms

I just gotten a SIM for simple mobile, Know I am wondering being that i am on ICS Passion am i going to be needing to unlock my phone? I put the SIM in and it did not ask me to enter a password or anything. Thanks for any help
No need to unlock because its under T-Mobile go to your simple mobile apn change proxy to
216.155.165.50 for data and save
Open T-Mobile apn and match every field like all the fields in your simple mobile apn except these changes
Simple MMS - apn
simple - name
216.155.165.050 - proxy
8080 - port

To those simple mobile users with $ 40 monthly plan:
Will your 3G speed (128 kbs) will be lowered after you reach 2 GB ?
I have had both T-Mobile and Simple Mobile. I have a MyTouch 3GS and Vibrant. When on T-Mobile I usually was able to get ~1500 kbs however was paying $100/month for unlimited everything with a 5GB data throttle. After switching to Simple Mobile I am capped at ~120 kbs on either phone. My 3GS is running the latest CM7 nightly and my Vibrant is running ICS Passion 10.6. I have read on other forums that some users have complained to Simple Mobile and the support tech "reset" their internet and after, they received the download speeds closer to T-Mobile. I have contacted support twice and have yet to get that lucky. I mostly use WiFi therefore am happy with the $60/month saving.
3g?
I just moved to Simple mobile $40 plan. Their 3g speed is lower than t-mobile's 2g speed. On t-mobile 2g i had 130kbps and now on 3g I have 117kbps. Why they call it 3g speed plan.
Check out straight talk for 45 a month.. Just don't think it's unlimited data.

if simple mobile gave at LEAST 1mbps d/l speeds, I'd switch to them.. I had them before and their data speeds are nearly unusable.. I heard their 4G plan gives great speed, but I can't afford that..
Have you try the $30 pre paid, Tmobile plan, give you 100 minutes, unlimited text, 5gb high speed (4g) data, then throttle down until renewal date,

So guys, here is my story so far.
I have been on Tmobile contract for a while and decided to switch to a Prepay plan. The "unlimited" plans offered by t mobile are overpriced(+highly throttled) so I looked else where.
I am currently using simple mobile, which started with the 40$ plan. Soon after I noticed that the 40$ unlimited plan was highly throttled to about 140kbs and had to switch to the 60$.
With the bill almost doubling and simple mobiles piece of crap* service, I did some research and found out that straight talk was coming out with a 45$ truly unlimited plan with no throttling for at&t and tmobile. Now I havn't used it yet but ordered the tmobile sim card. I have heard great things about the at&t $45 plan and will switch after this month is over.

[Q]VPN to get around the data capping by ISP

I only get 500MB of high speed internet and then i'm getting like 15kB/s which is horrible. I was played by my ISP so this is sort of a "pay-back" time and i don't want to pay extra 10 chf (12$) to get extra 1GB of high speed internet.
How can i setup VPN (I found out that i can setup VPN and bridge it with my home network so that it uses my home's internet, which is unlimited, and takes advantage of fooling my ISP).
I figured out that my ISP capped my internet when i crossed 800MB when it was supposed to do that at 500MB, meaning that they are doing it manually?
What are the apps out there and how can i setup this thing and is it even worth it?
lol, bumping!
It's nothing complicated really: Whether VPN server prevents my ISP from seeing the amount of data i've used.
