Sudden hard resets - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 ROM Development

Hey guys, has anyone ever experienced the XDAII doing a sudden hard reset? I am running win2003se and the only today plugin i'm using is SPB PocketPlus. I'm using the 2.06 ROM. It has happened to me 3x in this month when the unit just suddently on its own hard resets w/out any intervention or warning. This even if no other programs are loaded into memory except the today plugin. Any advice? Thanks

I have a 2i now, but I did experience the same problem as you're describing shortly before I upgraded. As it turned out, it was the same day I ordered the 2i!!
Maybe it was feeling jealous. I must say that I only ever experienced two hard resets throughout my use of the XDA2. Once was very ill-timed as I was away on business. I didn't have any numbers for texting or anything, so I had to drive back home that day and come back again once I had resynced and rebuilt. Still don't know why it happened, though I seem to remember trying to disconnect from GPRS at the time the unit locked...then I got the high pitch ding dinnng that only comes with a hard reset.
The second time was another lockup, though I don't think related to GPRS. I was not pleased but fast forward 24hrs I had a 2i in my hand instead!
Cheers
Anthony
PS - only on the second hard reset was I using 2.06 2003SE.

Thanks for your feedback Anton. In my case of the 5 hard resets i've so far experienced, only 3 of them was because of a software induced lockup. The other 2 happened on its own without any intervention. Kinda like it just decided on its own to hard reset. I think its a buggy OS that's causing it.

2.06 version
try ExtROM1.13.000version...not the OS.

Hi guys,
FYI about my experience today.
Maybe is link to the Spb Pocket Plus ... Previous im using v 2.3 ... not a problem until today morning.. i tried to install the v 2.5 . Suddenly, ALL.. i mean ALL .. memory has been deleted.. it looks like a hard reset. but lucky my contact list and other infomation is still able to retrive... As i mean ALL .. meaning my programs, storage, extension ROM ... even my SD CARD!! .. .. What happen? I dont know. but that happened when the moment I install the v2.5 PocketPlus.

SPB pocket plus
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/?en
from this site:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After installing Pocket Plus on my XDA II (MDA II or i-Mate) I can`t see storage cards indicators.
The current build of XDA II ROM contains a bug that can cause a hard-reset when a program reads data from a storage card. Due to the bug in ROM, accessing storage cards may cause complete data loss on XDA2 compatible devices. More often it happens with programs that access a storage card in a timer (like Spb Pocket Plus). There are no known solutions for this problem so we have had to disable the showing storage cards indicators on XDA II. We`ll enable this feature when HTC fixes this bug in their ROM.
But stil the hard reset occur......

got same problem... try your suggestion
I 'm also use the spb plus but v2.0 got the same problem... it just hard resetting in my pocket... I think it's not software induced... thanks for your help.

Hard reset again. Please help(1.72)

Second time en 36 hours. After being in my gym (without coberture) i couldnt turn on the imate. I only could hard reset.
My device information is :
ROM Version: 1.72.00WWE
ROM date: 03/15/04
Radio Version: 1.14.00
Protocol version: 1337.24
ExtROM version: 1.72.800
I didnt restore my applications (i installed them from scratch).
The software that i ve installed is:
Mobimate WorldMate Pro

RealCalculator
Spb Full Screen Keyboard
Spb GPRS Monitor
ScaryBear CheckNotifications
ScaryBear ClearNotify
Omega one battery pack
Tom tom gps (3.0)
Pocket Informant 5
Please help. Do you think that it's a problem of the rom? maybe the problem is in some the applications??
Please helppppppppppppppppppp
Did you restore a Backup after upgrade, or did you install all programs from scratch?...
I restored an upgrade after the 1.72 beta upgrade, and my device
then acted just like yours. It gets totaly dead for no special reason.
It also ate alot more of the battery!
I think that some programs or system DLL files have been changed in WM2003 in the new 1.72. And that´s whats causing the strange behavior.
Because when i installed all the aps from scratch, without restoring a backup everything worked perfect!
I did upgrade Thursday ( 2 days ago) all was going really well, till today. In my workplace, a radiology department, signal strength comes and goes. Guess what, my unit froze, no response had to do a hard reset. Same symptoms as with the 1.66 ROM. I don't understand what CD are up to! I have read the threads about Spb Pocket Plus (which I run) etc.. but there are so many happy users of this and other apps out there I find it hard to believe that it is responsible, I am sure it is a bug with the radio , which as far as I can see is not resolved, I bet more complaints will be forthcoming from 1.72 ROM users, not just us. (PS i started from fresh loading my apps, not a resore from previous ROM).
I have the same problem last night (for the first time), my XDA II blank when I put it in to cradlle soft reset not working, the only way is to hard reset. This is a strange behavior. :x
radio stack
I think is a problem of the radio stack. The problem appears when signal strength comes and goes. I thougth CD had solved it....But now i am sure the problem remains....
I don't think it has anything to do with the radio stack?
I believe that it is SPB software, GPRS monitor, Pocket Plus etc. I had to hard reset after a lockup but after I removed ALL SPB software I have had no issues at all. Nothing very stable and 3+ days of heavy use. Try it...remove ALL SPB software and run for a few days.
Remember 1.66 had a Microsoft Service pack 1 and 1.72 has Microsoft Service Pack 2 in the ROM. I believe there must be some issues with SPB and the service packs.
I LOVE their software but I cannot live with lockups and hard resets. So I either downgrade the rom (not an option - rom is very stable I find now, fast and my BT headset works great) or remove all their software till they sort things out.
I have run SPB GPRS monitor and pocket plus (the NEW 2.0 version) for a couple of weeks now, under heavy use. And i have had NO issues whatsoever.
i havent had any of those having to hardreset since
i removed spd plus (not the newest version)
and claunch
suppose it could just be a coincident
but i'm not installing those 2 programs again
well i also removed some of the phm software at that time come to think of it
OK guys, I am going to give it a go, will uninstall my GPRS monitor and spb pocket plus v 2, and see what happens, will let you know.
Well the best way would be a hard reset and then NOT install the apps but it is some work to do that. Hope that the uninstall does uninstall everything most do not.
Let us know...good luck.
Hello folks,
I have the exact same problem descrived above. And I use SBP's Pocket Plus, but honestly I think it has nothing to do with this problem since I hard reset my MDA2 and use it with factory defaults, no applications installed but eventually the problem came back!
It's really weird...
Let us know if somebody manages to reproduce the problem, since It occurs at random intervals.
Best regards,
Rayan
hmm ... i upgraded to 1.72 today ... within hours, it froze and sort of reseted itself and got stuck at the imate screen. Did soft reset and still stuck at the same screen, turned off xda and turned on again .. .same result. So had to do a hard reset ... luckily i restored everything within min with sprite backup.
Something interesting though, when I turned off device and pulled out battery, the screen still displated half of the imate screen ... i guess its eating off the backup battery ...
Anyway ... hope someone comes up with a fix soon ... otherwise its gonna b a pain if this keeps happening.
Hello, does anyone solve this problem, i have the same problem and it's really anoying
hehe
mine jus played up on me again yesterday. AGAIN while playing with phonedashboad but anyhow, i dont like this rom, prob gonna downgrade to 1.66 or 1.6
Well I am now 9 days on since I did a voluntary hard reset after experiencing 2 forced hard resets in 4 days with ROM 1.72 (all mmy favourite apps running including Spb Pocket Plus, GPRS monitor and others). I decidied to hard reset, start witha clean system, installed only PI, Fitaly and Sprite backup, 9 days now of trouble free i-mate usage. I am now installing apps one at a time to see what happens, stared with Hudson mobile phone dashboard, so far 2 day and all s well.
I am starting to form the opinion that my problems were down to running to many today plug ins, as i used to run all of the following :
Spb Pocket Plus v2.
Spb GPRS Monitor
Husdon Mobile Phone Dashboard
Kitara Genesis
I am a little more happier with the radio version, though i must admit i am cautious about staying too long in zones of bad or no reception.
As dherreo mentions, if you have to be a long while in a no reception zone, may be better to switch the radio off. I have my i-mate forward calls to my pager so i don't miss any incoming calls.
dmjames
Try playing around with phonedashboard such as puttin in the M2M numbers and fiddling around wiht the settings for a while. It doesnt happen everytime, but both my forced hard-resets have been during setting phonedashboard.
I havent installed spb software cos there were some speculation about conflicts with the new rom.
Well well well,
i had a very unstable and finally within about 36 hours after installing that Spb software it came to a hard reset.
now i read about it, i can finally see what it was that caused the hard reset.
I had been thinking and thinking what I installed that caused my mda to crash. but now i know it Spb Software or it has a very high probability chance
Hmm..did any of you notice the blue LED light lite when the system frooze.
My did 2 times, in three days at nearly the same time!..mine is Rom1.66..
1.66 was very stable for me besides the battery drain and slight slowness compared to 1.72 ... beside that, it neva froze once....
no hang-ups
I am using 1.72 for a week now -with Spb (!)- and it works stable
My device information is :
ROM Version: 1.72.00WWE
ROM date: 03/15/04
Radio Version: 1.14.00
Protocol version: 1337.24
ExtROM version: 1.72.126
Spb pocket plus 2.00 build 1184
Spb GPRS monitor 2.12 build 306
It seems for me there is no problem with 1.72 and Spb software.
I did however remove the "3_networkname.CAB" from the ExtROM, because I never see this before (and I don't have an i-mate). Could this be the difference?
I do have some strange problem with Alturion BT GPS serial connection since 1.66 (but not from start). All indications on the BT GPS suggest that there is a good BT connection and satelites are found but Alturion is claiming there is no GPS available. Later I installed TT3 and this had no problem with the BT GPS connection.
Probably this has nothing to do with 1.72 (or 1.66) but with the ****ty drivers from Alturion.

Imate does not wake up after going to suspend mode

Hello everyone,
I have placed this question to Imate, bu I didn't find out the right solution. So I'd like to ask for help here.
The matter is:
I currently have the Imate PPC Phone with bootloader 1.06, ROM 1.66 which I bought in Dubai 2 months ago. My Imate has a problem which is it doesn’t come up after going into suspend mode for sometime (I set to turn off device after 1 minutes). From the time start using it, I met the same symptom 4 times. Then, I decided to upgrade to ROM 1.72 which downloaded from your website, after 2 days I had the same problem.
Details of symptom:
-Bluetooth Light: blinking (blue)
-Radio Light: blinking (green)
-Use another phone to call Imate: hear the answering tones but Imate gives no sound or signal.
The only way to get Imate back is hard reset. It’s seem a nightmare to me when I have to do it after 3 or 4 days of using.

Imate has replied to me:
Thank you for writing in. regarding the issue faced by you, I would like to inquire if you are using an old sim card as the old sim cards are all 5 volt cards and there issue with it used on our devices as it draws too much power. The new generation SIM cards are all 3 volts, so I strongly suggest you ask your GSM operator to issue a new SIM card

I've checked my operator the SIM is new one and the battery is more than 70% when this happens.
hungdu, I've just posted my similar experience on the other thread, this is my experience:
The issue of the XDA II not responding to anything but hard reset happened to me two or three times, but I was on 1.60.44WWE.
The first time, I reinstalled almost everything to see if a particular program crashed the unit.
The second time, I narrowed it down to GPRS Tweak ... but still it happened.
The last time, I took out a program called SpaceReclaimer, that clears away cached & temporary files ... and this time, perhaps it was pure luck but the problem hasn't occurred since, it's been more than 6 months now.
I have no solutions, but just to share my experience and compare notes, perhaps the new ROM came with an app which messes with system files in background and causes this to happen. Well, at least that's what I suspected what happened to mine as I remember using SpaceReclaimer quite often before those hard resets.

At first, I suspected the SIM card as well, as it's more than 4 years old. I think I went to upgrade and got a brand spanking new 64k SIM card, but still the problem persist. It was not until the 3rd time hard reset that I removed some programs to diagnose. However, your device might not be crashed by the same program I had, but do try and seek the "suspect" apps.
I have the same problem on my I-mate JAM, tried several SIM-cards, but it did not help at all. For right now I use ScreenLock program to lock the keys and turn off the screen. But it is inconvenient if you have incoming call or alarm clock starts screen starts to blink with incoming call screen and turns off again in a half of a second. Then incoming call screen comes up again and turns back off etc. I looked on the forums but still have not found any solutin that helped.

Running on WM2003SE, wonder if this incident normal...?

Hi experts...
Well, I have just recently upgraded to WM2003SE with ZeroXtreme modified ROM. Lately, while I was using my xda 2, probably it process pretty much heavy task and got hang. I did a soft the first time, it was somehow froze at the splash screen. Thought I waited longer than the usual time it'd load to windows, impatiently I soft reset the second time.
Surprisingly It proceeded to the align window which was actually done by hard reset. I was still puzzled even now, wonder whether it does happen like with the upgrade or just on my machine.
However, before this happen, I did somehow accidentally got my xda 2 knock against the ground quite lightly and a little scratch was on my baby's... Not sure if that was part of the cause of the auto-hard reset?
After reinstalling all applications back, I did some trial and error to test if it reoccur by soft resetting a few times and pressing multiple buttons simultaneously or any other way that I could think of to test out.
And so far it didn't auto-hard reset again. But, sometimes, if I soft reset it, it'd froze at the 2nd splash screen (the first splash screen where it displays the rom version, etc for short). Hence, i need to soft-reset it another time to get back working.
Experts please give advise or anyone experience the same occurence please do share. thanks.
Hi buddy,
The hang/delay while soft reset seems to be a common problem for 2.06 ROM. I have the same problem as well. Someone suggested the XCPUScaler could help a bit and it does....well, not totally. Sin from Australia suggested a merge of 2.02t and 2.06 ROMs can resolve the problem. I haven't try it yet but if you would like to give it a go, do a search in the Forum.
Have a great Christmas!
Cheers!
Check the DB_notify_queue database as it might contain lots of records ... use CheckNotify to clear it as the clearnotify.exe fix doesn't
P.S: it shouldn't contain more than 20 records in average

Hi!
I use CheckNotify and check that they were 21 records. I guess it's normal then, since you said it shouldn't be more than 20 records. So, do you think I should still run the "clearfix.exe"?
I was just puzzled, how on earth that it could hard-reset by itself, when I was expecting a soft-reset on the machine.
I tried to recollect how was it possible to happen, and I thought it could be due to the one time that it slipped off my hand and knock on the ground lightly while I was trying to snap a picture that's closed to the floor. Other than these, I'm not too sure what's the cause could be, cause it might be too technical for me to discover :?
I think this is the problem of using non-official rom, especially main one. I have similar problem but not that serious. This is our trade off as no one force us to flash our rom.
Sometime I think it might be hardware problem too, as my wife is using 1.66WWE (I did not flash her machine), it sometimes hard reset automatically too... Also, everything change sim card - even if the 2nd battery is full, it still lost all the data.
Might be the machine is too complicated or might be this is a common feature of all the windows products.

crazy alarm

Hi,
my stock alarm rings every working morning at 6.02 (in past I had this setup), but I have now set it at 6.20 (not 6.02). Its the reason why I have to wake up earlier every working day.....please help me!
HD2 is very strange device.
P
no one have the same problem???
Never read anything about a problem like this before...
A soft reset from time to time?
Or, a backup of all your user data, then a hard reset and restore the data?
Depending on the ROM you´re using, HD2 can be a confusing machine indeed...
But I haven´t had any issues since at least a year. All custom ROMs I tried and used since then are good. And they got better and better, CHT made Sense a perfect UI for me...
I'm doin' soft reset about every 2 days. CHT is good, I'm using it. I have stock ROM. HD2 si definetly confusing machine... I can't wait for Samsung Galaxy S II - goodby damn Windows Mobile....
**** hard reset For everything exists some solution

HELP!!! TG01 goes into super S-L-O-W mode

Recently my phone started occasionally going into a slow-as-molasses mode where even the simplest task takes 20-30 secs to complete. Of course this makes the phone completely unusable. If I'm on a call and it happens it just turns itself off mid-call or sometimes automatically reboots but the reboot takes forever and the problem is still there. I end up having to take the battery out for a few seconds then it will work normally until the next episode. I have the CPU set to the max speed so normally it's fine. Also, I have a triple battery set-up so there is usually plenty of juice left when this happens. I have no idea what is triggering this and luckily it only happens occasionally. I'm using fxdjacentyfxd's excellent 6.5 ROM and having no other problems. If anyone has a solution or workaround or has experienced this please advise.
Thanks & Merry Christmas!
If the phone is getting hot I have bad news for you. It might be procesor. The one we have is in HD2 and xperia x10 if i remmeber well. The HD2 and same xperia x10 had a big problem overheating and rebooting whille talking , sms-ing, music listening, multitasking... I hope that isn't case for you. Haven't heard yet that someone had broken CPU around here on tg01. P.S. flash new ROM
I have this problem myself with my TG. The only solution it was Miro8 rom in my case. It is because your carrier.

The phone is not getting hot. Removing the battery then reinstalling it always fixes the problem (so far). I may have to do a hard (master) reset if the problem persists as I realize that one of the problems with Windows Mobile is it is prone to occasionally getting corrupted, at least in my experience with custom WM 6.0 ROM on my HTC 8525 over three years.

Any idea how the carrier can cause the problem? I've had the same carrier for 5 years including several months with the TG01 and never had this problem before.
yeah, its a WinMo issue
the software gets corrupted.
I faced this issue on my older WinMo devices. best bet is to hard reset!

In my case the carrier has two separate network (one for 2G and one for 3G), but it is certain that if i use the phone under that carrier it works as you described!
I put another sim (from another carrier) and the phone work great! So i identify the problem as beeing created by the carrier network or phone radio!
But i tried diferent radio and the result was that no mather the radio version I use the phone get slow in Cosmote network (the carrier I speak of).
Hi, I had exactly the same problem about one year ago.
Used to work the 'hard reset' stuff but in a days it slows down again and again.
I checked my SD card on the PC and looked like it was working fine, but it really wasn't. I had the final clue by using by a few days the phone without the SD... It worked just fine without sd.
So I decided to buy a ultra cool (an expensive BTW) SDHC class 10 and every problem with TG01 was solved!
Well, not every problem... Still having a little one with the GPS signal and the 3G data but it's not about the same thing.. but i'll still reading post here. Just forgot about this problem cause I was using some cooked roms from this place, but I had to return to the Movistar ES original in order to unlock the phone and now... you know, just don't work anymore. If I can't finx this **** with the original rom I'll go back to another coocked one.
Good luck!

Greetings from Thailand, kijotex! Hadn't considered the SD card as the possible problem. Mine is a 16GB Class 6 and seems to work fine. Did you check your SD card for errors or reformat it before buying the new card? I've used the same card in my previous phone, an HTC 8525/Hermes without problems (that I know of).
Thanks for responding & Happy New Year!

So you solve the problem with S-L-O-W think?
How did you solve it?
what was wrong?
I ask you because in my case only after switching the carrier I could use the phone again!

I backed up everything on the phone late the other night and was going to hard/master reset it the next morning but got called out of town and didn't do it. I did swap out my custom triple-battery pack and went back to my original Toshiba battery for a day. Surprisingly, the phone worked normally so re-installed the triple battery pack and it has been working 'normally' since then. I have no idea why. Between the quirks in Windows Mobile and the TG01 quirks I just never know what this phone is going to do next. If/when the s-l-o-w mode problem shows up again I'll hard/reset it and post again.
Cheers...

I finally did the master-clear this week as the phone was getting completely unusable. That seems to have helped tremendously but the phone went into the SLOW mode again today and I had to reboot it 2 or 3 times before it finally was normal. I had just played the Tiger Woods golf game on it for about 30 minutes so wonder if that didn't contribute somehow. I then went into Toshiba Power settings and unchecked the Reduce CPU speed if low battery box even though immediately after playing the game the battery meter showed 70%, but we all know how buggy that is.
My phone was getting screwed up because the case (actually a thin sleeve) was too tight and it allowed buttons to get mashed while it was in my pocket. This may not have been a problem except I had the Lock function disabled. Over time that random button pushing definitely corrupted WM6.5 just like it had done to my old HTC 8525. I'm now using a 2.5" USB external hard drive case until I can find a better fitting one.
I think I finally solved the problem. [crosses fingers] The Master Clear helped with some of the problems, but didn't cure the random S-L-O-W mode. I ended up reinstalling the same ROM and so far the phone is working flawlessly. I'm guessing that WM6.5 became corrupted over time and that was the culprit. I also had the phone Lock disabled and that continually caused buttons to get accidentally pressed while bicycling and/or jogging and speed walks. I personally feel the buttons need a bit more spring tension, especially the Sleep/Lock button on the left hand side. The Lock is enabled now so hopefully that will help.

In case it may be of interest, I have been using the Capdase leather sleeve case for a long time now without any issues. Nice red microfibre lining and pull tab to extract the phone easily. This UK supplier says no longer available, but most likely there are some about if you search a bit.
Best regards,

Hi Kevin,
Nice to 'hear' from you again and thanks for the tip. I'm using the Mugen back cover for their 2600 mAh battery, although with my custom battery pack. The phone is now about 1/2"(17mm) thick. Do you think this Capdase sleeve will fit?
I'm also glad you answered as I was about to post a new thread or PM you with a question about cooking my own phone config into a custom ROM. After just having to reinstall all of my add-ons, customized SPB GUI, etc., twice while trying to fix this problem, I'm now thinking about backing up everything with a custom ROM. That way if I have to reinstall the ROM I won't have to spend another couple of days getting the phone config back to where it was. I've perused the TG01 kitchen thread but confess I'm still confused about how to do it. And since 99.9% of my stuff is installed on the microSD card will the new custom ROM be able to access that existing data?
Finally, I have to say this phone continues to amaze me (when WM isn't acting up). I just can't see any benefit to 'upgrading' to WP7 like many have done, possibly bricking the phone in the process, or trashing the SDcard, etc. as it just doesn't seem worth it. Now I admit that the reason I bought this phone last year was to install Android, but after having a Viewsonic G-Tablet for a few months with a custom Gingerbread 2.3 ROM installed on it I just gave the tablet back (to my buddy) as it was so freakin' buggy. Bottom line is I'm not so impressed with Android at this point, especially custom ROMs. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I look forward to your sage advice.
Cheers!

My TG01 has now gone into permanent S-L-O-W mode and I can't get it out of it. I've soft reset it probably 20-25 times, even yanked the battery out while it's still on hoping to shock the system. Did this many times and it didn't make any difference. I even left the battery out all night last night hoping for a miracle this morning. Of course, no change. I'm afraid to try to reinstall the ROM again as it probably couldn't complete the task before the battery runs down. As it is now I can't even make a call as it simply goes so slow it won't even connect, so if I can't find a solution soon the TG01 is going into the trash bin. During the past 3 weeks I have spent way too many hours trying to resolve this problem and have simply run out of ideas and patience. I also Googled it and a few people have had the exact same problem but no one has posted a solution.
If anyone has a tip or suggestion please advise.
tg01 getting slower
In my case the issue was fully solved by: reformatting sd card (full format) and reflashing the ROM. No freezings since I did it 2 months ago. So, I would say it's either your sd card or your ROM. A hardware failure is also possible but it worth trying before throwing your tg01 in the trash Good luck!

Hi mikiril,
Thanks for the fast response. I've tried everything including reflashing the ROM and even that only worked for a few days. I've been researching the problem again this morning and found the problem and a temporary solution. The problem is device.exe is running wide open using between 95%-100% of CPU cycles. A French TG01 website says it has something to do with clicking on the Restrict Sleep Mode button in the Toshiba Power Saving Settings menu, which I had done at some point, but later went back and unchecked it. Their 'solution' is to activate both Bluetooth and WiFi then turn them off. I confirm that does work until the next bootup or Soft Reset. Maybe there's something in the registry that can undo whatever clicking on Restrict Sleep Mode has done. At least the phone is working at normal speed again, temporarily, so I have a little bit of hope.
Thanks!
