Hi everyone, I've really been looking at the Cingular 3125 as my next phone but have some concerns over the USB speeds. As stated on the fact sheet, the unit is only USB 1.1. I'll be doing numerous xfers of music and video and am wondering how others cope with the potential slow speed of USB 1.1. Is it really that bad? How often do you take apart everything to mount the miniSD in a reader? Why would they put 1.1 in such a new device when USB 2.0 has been around for ages?
Thanks.
well. I think that usb w needs more power and usb 1 is probably cheaper.
You can solve the speed problem partially by using the tool called wmstorage it can be found at www.modaco.com. free of charge. this tool makes your micro sd card while inside the phone a removable hdd. like a memory stick. that is faster file transfer then via AS. also the new version of AS 4.5 BETA supposed to have a faster file transfer capabilities.
For the rest I love the phone. it is a real beauty.

Hells bells I got it to work at last.
A lot of you have been experimenting with usb hubbs and can only get athena to see 2 ports on a 4 port hubb.
WELL I can now see 3 ports.
Running a usb 104 keys keyboard
usb mouse
kingston datatraveller 2.0 GB memory stick (sees it as a "Hard Drive")
I now run it on tiniest vga screen hooked up to an LCD 19inch (or wifes 22 inch wide) with above connected - running dataviz docs to go which gives me desktop word excel powerpoint pdf as well as Handbase (access like program)
FANTASTIC
The trick after losts of experiments is the following
In the HTC 4 in 1 cable usb slot I plugged a digitech micro usb hub (in other words a device which has 1 usb port connector on the LHS and 4 usb ports on the RHS all in one solid plastic block ie no cables
I cannot find this hub again as I have had it for some time but on the net i found this one from china which appears simmiliar and hopefully will do the trick in that it will see 3 out of the 4 ports (sees any 3 ports) but not the fourth one !!!!
I think the ability to see 3 ports instead of 2 is that it must be usb 1 (these are usb 2.0 devices below) and it must be a solid block with no cables - all the others I tried never got past 2 ports.
Maybe the usb 2.0 solid blocks below will also work - maybe the clincher is losing the cable and haveing the solid block
All usb hubs with the cables (even self powered ones) will only see 2 ports !!!
Hell I am trying
Got my setup to work like a bomb.
Will also see my integral 8 in 1 sd card reader and read my memort sticks and sdhc cards (again the card reader is one of those solid blocks with a usb port - no cables)
(Note : You have to remove the memory stick to plug in sd card reader and will only see one card at a time)
See items below
I have not tried these but my one is like these below
Happy computing
So for me I guess I will pass on the shift - I already have one at a hell of a lot bucks less.

Wow, looks like you made progress so thanks. I was wondering if you had a external 2.5" HDD caddy (USB, self - battery or mains powered) you could try for us?
I've started three threads on mutliple forums to get to the bottom of why the 4 in 1 cable isn't cuttting it with USB devices and so far the excuse is that it dosn't have the umph to power power hungry USB kit like a spinning Ext HDD Caddy! But your setup might work especially if the Caddy has it's own power source, which mine has in the form of mains or lithium battery pack.
Any way if it's not to much trouble your help would be much appreciated by myself and others following this issue.

Am I right in thinking that the USB Host hardware on the Athena is USB 2.0 but that WM6 is only capable of seeing it as 1.1? Thought I read this somewhere......anyway just a thought but maybe the OS can tell the difference between a solid state disk and a platter disk; thus no matter how much power you throw at it it won't work. Either that or it simply won't read above a certain capacity. Whichever is true I think it's safe to say that the external HDD debate is a dead duck: USB host has never purported to read full-on hard disks, only thumb drives and HIDs: there is clearly a reason for this.
My old toshiba e750 from 4 years ago had usb host capability. It could see all 20gig of my selfpowered X-drive.

Bizarre. What os did that run? I thought USB host support only came out with WM5
PPC 2003 SE, I was running a 4port hub and could use a usb gps, the 20gig x-drive, usb keyboard, and mouse. Only the x-drive needed external power, the other attachments worked just fine. Strange that current devices cannot even to that.
Hi Guys
I am back again.
I dont have a usb caddy but I have a usb (self powered) HDD cage that takes a 120GB 3.5in hdd.
I will try this on moinday evening when back home and report back
Hi
I am battling to see the HDD
Will have to try a smaller size.
Found a way to get rid of office mobile s??t once and for all.
Go to Docs to go folder and copy the 5 programs to a new directory
wordtogo, exceltogo, powerpointtogo, ziptogo and pdftogo.
Then rename them as follows:
wordtogo.exe to pword.exe
exceltogo.exe tp pxl.exe
powerpointtogo.exe to ppt.exe
ziptogo.exe to zipview.exe
pdftogo.exe to (using pk 3.0 touch version of rom) to ppc_adobereaderle.exe
then copy these 5 programs to c:\windows
the pword + pxl + ppt files will lie alongside their rom conterparts but the ram versins will always boot first.
zipview and ppc_adovereaderle will overwrite their ram counterparts.
Now whenever you see an attachement or anything it will always open docs to go equivalents and the office mobile link files (.lnk) in rom will call the ram versions which are the docs to go programs
Voila and now you have proper word excel powerpoint and pdf ???? as well as zip programs
cheers

hi
i think u r right
wm6 seems to see all devices as usb 1.1
No, I don't think WM6 can only see it as USB 1.o Some winmo devices are having USB 2.0.
See this for example:
http://www.sideshowdevices.com/i-mate-ultimate-wm6-phones-with-vista-sideshow-support
I think it is the software driver used, but I'm not competely sure. It cannot be due to hardware because WM5torage allows the PC to see Athena as USB2.0 harddisk. May be I'm not talking sense, but anyway.

usb client and usb host are different. wm6 certainly supposts usb client, though until recently even this aspect was only usb 1.1 in HTC devices, certainly,
So
Lets see if I get this correct (dumb ole me)
Usb client services on Athena couldbe usb 2.0
usb hpst services could be 1.1
Surely then this could be thew driver used.
If so can this be changed in the PK 3.0 black rom ????
Maybe ask olipro crowd ????

You're right.
There's no doubt in my mind that WM6 does support USB 2.0. The technical savvy might be able to port the right driver over to Athena to test.
when i connect the phone to the laptop with the USB cable and try to transfer files to the SD card (8GB) the transfer rate is pretty slow
but when i take the SD card out and put it in USB adapter the transfer is very very! fast!! why is this diffrent? is there any solotion?
Yes, its allways very slow, on all telephones on the market! You mustlive with it, but i think, you can wait 5 minutes and you dont transfer 8 Gb 2 times a day...
no that's not true. In winmo file transfers @ the same rate as usb (might be a little bit lesser, but that's not noticable).

I think it depends on the hardware, as on my current HP iPAQ 910c (running Windows Mobile 6.1) transferring via USB cable is far slower than transferring directly to the SD card through an SD card reader. I remember trying to transfer a few GB of MP3s via USB, and it was going to take 2+ hours, but only took a few minutes using a card reader.
My first post, but I've been reading in this forum for two months, a couple hours each day. It's habit forming.
Gtab, tnt lite v.4.1.0
I have a USB adapter made by Sigg that has a 16gig microSD inserted. Formatted (several times) FAT32. When inserted in the gtab USB host slot the disk is not mounted without a lot of plugging and unplugging and praying to the gods. There have been a few messages telling me that the 'card is damaged' when it is not. The microSD card works fine when inserted in the gtab's microSD slot. But it can take hours of fiddling to get the card to mount in the USB slot.
After lots of searching it seems that everyone else takes USB flash drives on the gtab for granted. They all seem to work. Mine doesn't, but works fine in my XPpro 32bit laptop.
If anyone can give me some ideas for troubleshooting this I'd appreciate it.
By the way, this forum is something of a phenomenon. After looking at the gtab threads I went out and bought mine at Sears. What better way to get acquainted with Android? My thanks go out to everyone here who has contributed. Someday I might be able to contribute as well.
I think about ways to better manage the gtablet xda forum, a lot. It has become a monster - but it's not a bad monster, more like a cute and cuddly Sesame Street monster.
How to organize all this fabulous information so that it can be easily searched and utilized? Good question.
All I can say is - keep up the good work. This forum is a fantastic resource.
Thanks all
Two thoughts:
First: I'd change the title. This isn't a thumbdrive issue, really, so much as a USB SD Reader problem.
Second: I've run into similar issues myself. But I've noticed that I have a couple odd ball readers tht don't work on Mac but does work on Windows. This may be a driver issue. My suggestion would be to try another SD card reader and see if that makes a difference.
I also have a USB adapter with a micro SD inside of it. I find that it does not mount on bootup, but it mounts fine if I remove it and re-insert it.
I was wondering if there is an app for sending a software command to mount the USB. I have looked, but have not found.
smalis, my question exactly!
Taking aaltieri's reply into consideration I experimented with a plain-jane thumbdrive, an adapter with a standard SD, and my adapter with the microSd. Others have demonstrated that adapters with more than one slot will not work. Both my adapters have one slot only.
So here's the intriguing results: The plain-jane thumbdrive is just as unreadable as both adapters UNLESS you boot the machine with the adapter/thumbdrive in the slot, then remove it and put it back in. Then they all read after a short detection period. BUT once the drives are removed after detection they cannot be read again until the machine is shut down and rebooted with the drive in, then remove it and put it back in for detection.
What we need is a method for mounting and unmounting USB drives. I've searched and cannot find a way to unmount the drive under tnt lite. It does not show up in settings/storage like the sd cards do.
By the way, the little Sigg adapter is very tiny, sticking out only 1/4" from the side of the gtab. I got it at Fry's Electronics for $6. I leave it in the slot full-time and it helps keep the power button from being activated when the gtab's inside it's sleeve. I use a Belkin 'non-slip' netbook sleeve (also at Fry's) and the gtab fits only slightly loose. I use a couple of ultrathin mouse pads/screen protectors, one on each side, to increase padding. The Belkin sleeve is difficult to drop due to the grippy sides. The ultrathin mouse pads are marketed for netbook use, to put under the lcd when closing the lid to protect the screen (also Fry's Electronics - what can I say, I'm hooked on the place).
The idea I had was to have 16gig in the SD slot and 16gig in the USB slot. The 32gig microSDHC's are cost prohibitive for me right now. And I still have 11gig remaining on the internal memory. I'd better get to work filling it . . .
Yeah, I have one of those tiny USB micro-SD adapters also (elago Mobile Nano II USB 2.0 microSDHC Flash Memory Card Reader from Amazon), and am very happy with its small footprint.
I had same idea as you - I have a Wintec 16 GB Class 10 MicroSD (~$30 on Newegg) in the SD slot and another one in the USB slot.
However, I have no problem reading the USB slot after unplugging and plugging it in once, or multiple times.
The only time I cannot read it is when I boot with it in. Then, I have to unplug it and plug it in once.
Yours seems more flaky.
Just wanted to note that I had similar issues reading the contents of a FAT32 formatted thumbdrive when using the default iFileManager on Vegan. I downloaded the File Manager app by Adao Team on the market and I can read the thumbdrive contents just fine when using that app.
A follow up for anyone interested.
I migrated to vegantab 5.1 to get mouse and keyboard functionality. I also loaded the small update to 5.1 that has sniffer included.
I don't think sniffer is much to write home about, but it does mount all the usb 2.0 drives and even all the multi-adapters that I've thrown at it. Some posts have pointed out that the multi-adapters don't work. But they do, at least in my experience. I used a Sony adapter that has sd, micro-sd, sony's memory stick, compact flash, and some other port. My 16gig compact flash cards from my camera are read without a problem AFTER opening sniffer. The iFile manager that comes with vegantab does not see the usb 2.0 or the adapter until sniffer is opened. Then the system sees the drives with no problem.
It works every time.
I decided to use an HP wireless mini keyboard. It's a perfect match for the gtab. I thought about dropping $80 for the new Verbatim folding bluetooth keyboard but the HP allows for much better touch typing and I need to do that. Best Buy has a cd/dcd carrying case made by Init that is essentially a hard case that fits the HP keyboard perfectly one the cd sleeves are removed. There's room under the keyboard for headphones, flash memory, and other odds and ends. With vegatab and the mouse fix, the keyboard is easily detected and the mouse pointer works great.
Anyway, it looks as if the mounting issue is one that can easily be taken care of with an app. Another more recent poster on this issue has noted that changing file managers allowed him to mount usb drives that iFileManager would not see. But sniffer works and it's there for seperate download if anyone wants it. I think it looks like crap and doesn't do much. I'll use it in the meantime, though.

I didn't even think of Sniffer. I have a cheapo USB reader that was intermittently working (1 out of 60?). After your suggesting, if I open sniffer then plug it in, it sees it every time.
Folks,
I don't know that there is an answer I have seen to all your questions/observations.
I will say:
1. microSD post and USB on the tablet are not plug and play like Windows.
2. When I change my USB key or microSD, I always shut down and likewise I
always shut down before removing them.
3. Yes, I know that's a pain if you change a lot, but for me it makes sure
Android's flicted OS searches for, finds them, and in turn properly shuts them
down before I remove them.
For me, in and out as need just doesn't work.

EDIT: P. S. -- You all seemed like sharp guys. Should I have asked if you
are looking for the files under /USBdisk?
In my experience, thumb drive mounting is hit and miss. Maybe it's just the drives that I'm using, but it's unreliable. Also, with Gingerbread and Pershoot's kernels, he references having to revert something in order to get USB mount to work (thinking about it, that might refer to mounting the tab to a computer). I would suggest getting used to unmounting your external micro card in Android and growing out a fingernail or two so you can pop that sucker out. I think this is a low priority to the devs, and maybe it should be.
Hey all, just started using ADB to push some video files directly to the internal file system. Noticed that the transfer speed is like 2.3 MB/s which in my opinion is pretty pitiful. Is the Nook Tablet's cable like USB 1.0 or something?
The video files are like 300-350 mb's each if that matters...
Just as another question to throw out there:
If I used a Micro USB to USB A cable certified for USB 2.0, would that enhance transfer speeds or would it not matter and simply depend on the internal storage's read/write speed?
I know it's not all that practical but I have a v30 that's destroyed but turns on and works every way the screen just flashes colors, is there any way I can format the whole phones os into a "ntfs" hdd to plug into a windows computer and not have to select "device" under my PC. I want the phone to show as a regular flashdrive even if I can't use the actual Android os, but I need it to be readable by windows as a full flashdrive not a "device" then click it to show storage if that makes any sense
Someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they did away with remounting storage as a bulk storage device...uh...several versions back. Probably with Lollipop, it introduced a ridiculous number of changes, many of them annoying like this.
Since then, Android primarily uses Media Transfer Protocol (switchable to Picture Transfer Protocol), a comparatively slow, crappy, feature-limited way to manage files. It's complete garbage. It's also safer than straight-up exposing the filesystem and doesn't interrupt the phone's ability to keep using the storage (for better or worse...), which is probably why they did it.
To get around it, you'd probably need to put a service of some sort on the phone so it can present the phone as a network drive, which you could then map over wifi --- there's probably app/windows program combos to do this. Or compile your own ROM with the bulk storage option enabled.
There might also be a way in Windows to map a drive straight to the MTP storage, or symlink a folder to it to make it more seamless, but I'm not sure. You'd still be dealing with MTP limitations then, and I'm not sure how an application that expects a real filesystem would react to that.
Not much worth it man. Storage is dirt cheap.
The phone won't last for long because the battery will eventually ends up dead and the phone/storage will stop being usable.

Better yet, don't buy USB sticks, they're garbage. Cheap, yes, but slow and fragile: both physically and electrically.
External HDDs are pretty cost-efficient storage, but they're also mechanically fragile.
If you're gonna do it, do it right! Something sturdy, compact and upgradable:
ElecGear SATA M.2 SSD to USB 3.1 Gen2 Enclosure (actually an Ineo T2588FA, there's also a vented version available but meh on holes for things to get into)
and uhhh...
Kingston A400 240G Internal SSD M.2 2280 SA400M8/240G (just as an example, probably better deals on bigger drives out there)
Cabled M.2 enclosures are cheaper and plentiful, of course, but I personally like the giant-thumbdrive formfactor :silly:
Most important thing is to make sure it supports USB3(.1) Gen 2 and UASP for maximum balls-to-the-wall speed.
Even without UASP support (in Win7 or what-have-you), something like this will blow a normal consumer flash drive (and most "professional"/"enthusiast" drives) or external HDD out of the water in any performance metric, and aside from the connector is basically immune to most things that would physically damage a HDD or plastic-cased flash drive.
