I have a few questions before I decide to upgrade/flash my 2 week old HTC Hermes. I have already read the wiki but I just want to be sure that a ROM upgrade goes smoothly and the result is better than what I currently have.
-I have limited access to a Windows machine (Mac only) and I plan to upgrade my ROM using the SD card. Is this method (SD card flash upgrade) as safe as upgrading using Windows?
-Just for confirmation, I will first use the SuperCID prog in a Windows machine then use an SD card for upgrading my TyTn's ROM as outlined in the wiki. Did I understand it correctly?
-My phone's current ROM is 1.18.255.3 dated 7/22/06. I live in the Philippines (asia) and if I upgrade to ROM ver. 1.35 (South Africa), will it make any difference? Especially when it comes to the radio part of the phone?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot in advance...
EDIT: I ahve SPL 1.06

The rom has some improvements yes... radio too (better battery life), but you'll be in bootloader 1.09. As you said, be _sure_ to make it SuperCID first.
Thanks pof for that quick reply!
As I mentioned in the bottom part of my post, I have bootloader 1.06 which I understand makes it currently impossible to apply the superCID hack. So I need to wait for a new superCID prog.
If I plan to use only HTC-released ROMs, I need not bother to make my TyTn superCID, right?
Thanks again pof for your patience for newbies like myself! More power!!!
Right but I would stay away from 1.09 without supercid, because if flashing goes wrong device can be bricked very easily and commands to repair have been removed

Okay. So I need to flash/use first an HTC ROM w/ bootloader 1.04 then use SuperCID then whatever ROM (ver. 1.35, for example) I desire? With this method, I lower the risk of bricking my device because even at bootloader 1.09, I can still downgrade?
Thanks again pof!

You lower the risk of a brick because you have 1.09 with SecLevel=0 which has commands to fix brick enabled (but not rtask), but 1.09 can't be downgraded once flashed by legal means now. A solution to downgrade might come in the near future
Ok pof, I think I get it. And.. Thanks for the compliments...
I am a dyed-in-the-wool Palm OS fanatic (I also have the Treo 650 which I used as my main phone for more than 1 and half years) but Palm OS 5.0+ is already showing its age so I decided to take the plunge with WM5. With boards like this and with people like you who is more than willing to help newbies like me, I guess I'll be enjoying my TyTn more than I did with my 650.
Thanks again man!!!

A solution to downgrade 1.09 is coming soon ?!
If so, that will be a great news for me !!
I've read the posts about the SD card disappearing. Does this only happen when it is being controlled by WM5/6, but is safe in bootloader mode?
I'm asking because my computer crashed during my last upgrade and couldn't be recovered. I want to carry on experimenting and upgrading but am looking for as much security as possible.
Also, are there any other benefits to flashing from SD card?

OK, I've read the wiki and various FAQs on the topic. I am basically looking for confirmation on my plan as I have never done anything like this before. I don't want to see sparks flying out of my 8525 after trying to upgrade.
I have the 1.16 Radio and 1.34 ROM currently and I want to get to 1.34 radio, 2.06 ROM, 3.3 AKU. I think my procedure should be to:
1. perform the CID/SIM unlocker v3 per http://forum.xdadevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
2. Install the latest ROM per:
http://rapidshare.com/files/18315008/RUU_HER_CINGULAR_2.06.502.3_1.34.00.10_SPL1.04.exe which should update the ROM and radio.
And I believe all of this is able to be done without downgrading to boot loader 1.04.
Thanks for the help.

You dont have too SuperCID but I would. That ROM will not downgrade your BL to 1.04. You BL will stay the same or become 1.04 if you happen to have something lower, which I doubt.

Are you saying it won't downgrade the BL regardless of the SuperCID status, or depending on which BL it currently has?
@pstritt: Based on the other info you provided, I'm guessing you must have SPL 1.06. You should be able to flash that ROM without going SuperCID first, as I've done so myself. My SPL remained 1.06 (why it did being contingent upon the answer to the question above).
Really no reason to SuperCID anymore...

Most of the links for radio only use Des' SSPL, so, SuperCID isn't needed. In fact, you don't even need to worry about having the appropriate BL either as Des' BL uses 1.09 to flash radios, even the 0108...
So, grab the packed RUU and run. Done.
If you aren't SuperCIDing your device, you **REALLY** should install the Oli BL; reason is that if there is a bad radio flash, it will save you in a VERY big way! Highly recommended to do it before you start mucking around too much with radios/os/etc...

Here again, I wholeheartedly agree. Until 1.10.Oli came about the light never went on with me as to the hidden benefits of SuperCID/1.04, despite that fact I had no burning desire to flash cross-CID or "generic" ROMs (...yet!).
Now I understand that it'll give you the ability to manuever in the BL if you happen to hose your radio, etc.

no, enter the thread, there's only one available; the 1.01 stuff is only available as NB files and you have to know what you're doing to flash those whereas 1.10 is available as an RUU update that you can run on your computer to flash; that's the one you want

Stick to running the installer (ROMUpgradeUt.exe) to flash the 1.04-based version unless you really know what you're doing. Olipro left his 1.01-based version as .nb's for this very reason.
Show ExtROM Version
Hi, I'm new of the forum, I would want to know how to show the version of the ExtROM in “Device Information” with version 0.20 of XDA Live. Thanks a lot for the answer.
just to dispel the myth;
SPL 1.01MFG Flashing via mtty is NOT faster than using the RUU; HTC do not deliberately slow down the process, that's just bloody stupid; the reason it can take longer is if you include a Radio ROM, because flashing a radio takes sodding ages, but can people please learn that using a proper NBH is a smarter and safer way to flash their Hermes.
I second that. this myth appeared because 1.01MFG was the first bootloader that allowed us to flash unsigned, but it didn't allow to flash a radio. So there was the general "feeling" that signature checking was slowing down the process, but it was not: the slowness is caused by flashing the radio.
True, but from strictly a ROM cooker perspective, its not faster. It takes time to build/run the RUU & when you're testing cooked roms, its just far easier to fire up the sspl 1.01MFG and lnb the new os.nb directly.
I understand safety to be the presence of BL v1.10.Oli at location 50020000.
Consequently, I keep this version flashed and test out cooked ideas (currently I'm working on the ATI video issue so I've been flashing a lot of test roms) using your 1.01MFG sspl bootloader.
Expanding on this, I believe that production cooked ROMs should include your 1.10.Oli SPL bootloader from a safety perspective based on my understanding that the BL is flashed first in the RUU under the control of the 1.09Des SSPL loader. This will guarantee a safety net should something go wrong during the OS and/or Radio flashing portion of the process. I would also imagine that this is why you state that RUU flashing is safer too.
Maybe this should be SOP whenever a new production ROM is released by Operators too: Repackage everything into a sspl that also loads 1.10.Oli. Of course, when HTC takes their inevitable next steps in this "spy vs. spy" battle, all this may be invalidated...
Here's an interesting thought: Your bootloader advancements have actually helped Operators since using this technique should result in far fewer bricks being returned for new devices. Now the question is this: does this cost HTC I wonder? Or to put it differently: who sucks up the cost of a bricked Hermes that is replaced in warranty. Whomever this is is very happy with you Olipro and likely to offer you a job as a top developer . Conversely, whomever sucks up the cost is gonna put a contract out on you....
JK: The fact is this: both have a contract on you b/c you've invalidated CID
When I run the RUU, I'll open the Windows Media Player to play the MP3 files, and the update process will be finished in 2-3 minutes.
I guess my major question is this:
At what time during the RUU flashing process is the bootloader flashed? If its the first thing to be flashed then my points above are valid. If not, then everybody who flashes needs to insure that they have 1.10.Oli in flash before stripping the bl out of any ROM they wish to flash. Perhaps we could begin to go through production ROMs and designate those that have had this done with another column on the Wiki.

Yes they are: the HardSPL is flashed but the process continues with the current bootloader on device... but after the flashing process ends (or fails) HardSPL is there, which lets you recover the bad flash because even if radio is b0rken the device is seen as SuperCID. Only those with radio bootloader 0108 will need to flash a hardSPL based on 1.09 to be able to recover, the rest will be fine with the one based in 1.04.

I've been trying to read up as much as I can thru the wiki and through the threads but it seems that theres so many technical posts but no posts covering simple questions, so I thought I'd post some here.
1) I first got my hermes (SPV m3100) in February and unlocked it with (I think) pofs tool at the time, it worked a treat, I think that the tool at the time made it super CID as well as unlocking it. Does this pretty much mean my warranty is void already?
If it does, can I revert back to normal CID? (My Bootloader is 1.04 if this helps)
2) The wiki goes a lot about upgrading but doesn't really cover downgrading - I see there is an Orange English rom - if things dont work properly and I want to revert to original, is this possible? Is there a way to revert back to a rom that will still be valid for warranty (for the UK at least)?
3) Will upgrading radio to latest version or bootloader to oli void warranty?
Sorry I know that a lot of these qs might seem simplistic and have been answered many times but I've been searching and it's quite difficult to just get simple answers! Thanks for your help.
I think that may be an Orange Romania Rom in the wiki.

v1 did not make your device SuperCID. Versions v2 and v2a made your device SuperCID without allowing you to choose, since v3 you could choose if you wanted to SuperCID or not.

Depending on your operator, some operators such as SoftBank will not exchange device under warranty if it is SuperCID, others like Cingular do not check it and exchange the device without problems.

yes, just flash everything as you had in the original rom, this is not a problem if your original ROM is available as a shipped update, otherwise you'll have to do some work: take the parts that are the same from any other ROM (ipl, spl, splash screens, radio...) take the ExtROM from wiki or copy it from another device if it's not on wiki and reconstruct the OS from a dumped ROM if your shipped OS is not available, check this comment for more info.

Yes and no: Obviously if you return it for warranty with a radio or a bootloader that was not the one shipped on the phone or an official rom upgrade the operator will possibly deny the warranty for you, but if you are clever enough you will manage to downgrade that and leave it to the original versions you had on your phone.

Current unlocker version (v3a) does 4 things:
1. Change your SPL to HardSPL-1.40
2. Change your radio to patched-1.16
3. Remove operator SIM-Lock (Only if you run Herm_Unlock_v3.exe and select this option)
4. Change your CID to SuperCID (Only if you have htc_boot <= 0107 and run Herm_Unlock_v3.exe and select this option)
Out of this you can revert:
1. Flash any SPL version you want using SSPL
2. Change your radio to any version you want, and this is highly recommended as the patched 1.16 is quite an old radio.
3. No one has ever asked me to SIM-Lock again a device to any MSL code, but this is possible, so if you would ever need to SIM-Lock it feel free to PM me and tell me which MSL you want.
4. As I said earlier, set your CID back from a SuperCID is only possible if your htc_boot is 0107, should be possible on newer htc_boot but we don't know yet how.

What is done to make it SuperCID? I would like to set my CID back from a SuperCID, but my htc_boot is 0108. Is it not possible because the htc_boot 0108 cannot be downgraded, and the SuperCID resides within htc_boot? If this is the case, can I just upgrade htc_boot to erase the SuperCID?
@kuekpeow: read point 4 on the reply you quoted again..... changing the CID was only possible on htc_boot 0107, not possible on newer radio bootloaders... upgrading it does not help, and we don't know how to downgrade it yet.
Pof, I'd just like to thank you for your help in this thread! I've managed to successfully upgrade! Cheers!
I'm a real noob with this stuff, but I had to try WM6 Black to see if my issues with the Jasjam (screen locks completely - requiring the battery to be removed for over 10 mins), would be fixed. It is still locking after the upgrade and so I want to take the phone back to be repaired, but I'm worried that the repairers will try stating that the warranty is void because of me changing to WM6. When I try to load the original rom back on (latest supplied by I-Mate), the update starts and then my connection through Activesynch drops out (using USB). I have tried searching for information throughout the forum, but I find it all difficult to find anything on this issue. Can someone please help me with instructions for what to do.
The problem I have is that I bought the phone in Aus, but I am working in China, so I have to make sure everything is squared off before I send the phone back.
Cheers.
I want to CID my device again in case of warranty.
What do I have to do?
mtty says following:
USB>rtask a
Enter Radio Bootloader
0106
and now? what has to be done?
edit: Unlocked with Unlocker V2a, running original T-Mobile-Germany-Rom, no Radio-Upgrade or something in that way, just tried WM6 and flashed back.

ASK pof.

All,
I downloaded the original Cingular/ATT Rom, just in case, and bought Sprite and backed up my settings. I downloaded SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe and ran it (from my PC, is this correct?). SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe seemed to run okay, and gave me the message "SDA Successfully unlocked, Please Reboot SDA Now!". I rebooted my phone and did not notice a change (I assume I should?) I ran the Rom update for WM6.1 Standard, which opened up a DOS-looking box that stayed there forever and did not indicate it was doing anything. After just over an hour I disconnected my phone and rebooted it, no change.
My questions:
1) Do I run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from my PC or from the WM phone itself?
2) Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?
3) What does CID Unlock do, and do I need it?
Just to review, I have a Cingular 3125 with WM5, and I want to go to WM6.1 Standard.
Please help! Thanks!

You were supposed to run Jump SPL on your phone which puts it into a special bootloader then run the update utility should run correctly. I personally prefer the MicroSD flash method myself.
Jump SPL?

Thanks icecube57!
I know that SPL files were copied to my phone automatically when I ran Rom updater, but I don't think it ever launched. I am really confused about the CID unlock. I read one post where it says I have to do this, and another that says for Cingular Roms you don't need to.
Also, you mention the MicroSD flash method - is there a post here that explains how to do that? I would not mind trying it if you think it works better. Please help!

If i dont say it someone else will. Please use the search function.
If the utility didnt automatically launch the Jump Spl program then navigate to the root of your phone using file explorer start it manually from your phone and it will put the phone into bootloader then try running the utility again. Thats how i had to do it with my phone
Thanks

Okay, that's fair, thanks. Can I get an answer on one more thing? I did look in the forums, in the Wiki ,etc. on this - I am still confused on what CID unlock is. I really don't want to brick my phone. When this worked for you, was this on a Cingular 3125? Did you have to CID unlock?

What you are talking about permenantly CID unlocks the phone which allows you to flash any rom. Instead of being stuck with carrier specific roms. What the JUMP SPL does is loads a specially modified bootloader that temporarily fakes the Update Utility into thinking your phone is CID unlocked that way you can flash any rom without going through that long complicated process in making it permenantly CID unlocked. I have a 3125 myself and flashes all the roms in this forum fine with the Jumps SPL Bootloader method.
MicroSD Flashing

If possible could someone instruct me on how to downgrade the SPL on hd2 from 2.10 to 1.42? Also, i've been having trouble with changing the radio.
Hi,
You can downgrade your SPL by installing an older stock ROM with the SPL version you require.
As for changing your radio, what exactly is the 'trouble'? You should just be able to flash it the same as you flash your ROM's (check The Leo Radio Thread for different radio versions), or you could task29 your phone and use the radio .nbh file instead of the blank one that comes shipped with task29.
Hope this helps

You cant. Your spl being 2.10.0000 tells us that you have a tmous phone, so you cannot use any 1.x spl versions.
This is also why you cant change radio, , ,because you dont have hspl installed.

DO NOT follow the above advice to flash an older rom from sd card, it WILL brick your phone.
What are you trying to do? if you are wanting to downgrade so you can flash roms and radios, use hspl3, and choose 2.08.hspl

This counts as a downgrade in my book (not the one he wants, but still.....)
Or am I missing something?
heh, the point was the op wanted to downgrade from a stock to a stock that wouldn't work. had he followed your post he would have rushed off to find a stock 1.43 rom because it includes 1.42 spl, flashed it, and would have a brick now.
i wasn't saying your post was wrong, just that it wasn't clear enough considering the phone is a tmous.

Still I notice a lot of people trying flashing without having a clue as to what they are doing.
They Flash ROM sometimes more easy than installing a program, like there is no risk.
What worries me more: People are even advising to Flash stating there is no risk at all

couldnt agree more. The HD2 is probably one of the safest phones to flash that ive ever come across (excluding the tmous, cos it has a built in kill switch, hehe) but yet every day there are examples of people getting their phone, coming straight here and flashign eth first rom they can find, with no reading, no understanding, no preparation, nothing.
