get back original SPL - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Sorry for my ignorance, but i have spl-1.40.Olipro on my 8525, and i was wondering how I would get back to a bootloader that would be acceptable, if I were to send the phone in for repair (I think I flashed the phone too many times and fried the WLAN chip somehow; ive tried multiple roms and have done multiple hard and softresets). I was thinking 1.04, but I have searched the forums and have not found a link that will tell me how to do this
BTW does anyone have a broken 8525 that they are selling or willing to trade?, preferably no main board damage, and the housing and screen could be wrecked for all I care

read the Hard-SPL thread better... it clearly says to use SSPL to flash 1.10.Olipro then flash a retail.

i'm closing this one... this is becoming a FAQ... and no need to open yet another a new thread for this.

X01HT, After December 2nd ROM misfortune...

First, thank you again for this wonderful forum!
This is my problem:
I bought my X01HT AFTER Dec.2nd, to be precise on Dec.4th. Late afternoon I noticed it has dead pixel & considered returning it to the store and trying to ask for replacement...
I checked my X01HT version and it was the following:
ROM ver: 1.33.761.3
ROM date: 09/08/06
Radio ver: 1.14.00.10
Protocol: 32.50.7018.00H
Bootloader: IPL-1.01 SPL-1.06
Seems that I was lucky, and my ROM & boot loader was pre-Dec.2nd...
I didn't want to flash or tamper anything with my phone, since I really disliked this dead pixel, and was thinking about returning the phone. I went to SoftBank shop Dec. 5th and asked if it is possible to get replacement... Very bad mistake indeed!
There were no more X01HT available as replacements, as they were all sold out. Seems that I had bought very last one. They said they will look into this dead pixel issue and took my phone and said they need to 'send it to maker'. They gave some other phone as a replacement and said they will contact me next week...
So it happened, I waited (impatiently), and today they called... I went there all thrilled, and they finally gave me my phone back.
DAMN SoftBank! HATE THEM HATE THEM HATE THEM! (Sorry, I'm just human)
1. Dead pixel WAS STILL THERE... They said 'the maker' would not replace screens for just one dead pixel...
2. THEY UPDATED MY ROM with post Dec.2nd version!!! Now I'm the proud owner of the infamous unlockable phone! Here's version info:
ROM ver: 1.33.761.4
ROM date: 11/10/06
Radio ver: 1.14.00.10
Protocol: 32.50.7018.00H
Bootloader: IPL-1.01 SPL-1.09
I am just outrageous. I feel soooo stupid and bad. I should have known they could do this to me. Is it Friday 13th today or something?
Anyway, I have certain experience concerning flashing phones / PDAs, but now I'm not sure what to do!?! I really need SIM & CID unlocked phone.
I know people reported at this forum that new X01HT could not be SIM & CID unlocked because radio flash is not possible, because it seems to be read only... How come is it read-only, radio version is the same 1.14.00.10, and the only change is in ROM version (1.33.761.3 vs. 1.33.761.4) and of course bootloader is 1.09?
I am eager to start experimenting, try downgrading bootloader, flashing other ROMs, flashing only radio, or whatever... I just need some advice from more experienced users about what should be best thing to do (other than just sitting here and enjoying plain hate & disappointment). I was thinking of doing the same thing as julianfong done in this thread...
@Pof? Others? Any idea?
Or I should just wait patiently for some new solution of this issue, and use my (very limited) phone as most of the average users?
Thanks & sorry for this very long post...
yeah, just how unlockable is it? i mean... I am all too familiar with the new SE and Sharp DB2020 phones, but these are completely different.
is it unlockable because there is just no solution at the moment (a solution could be fairly soon)?
or, is it unlockable because 1.09 has DB2020-similar style of impossible to be cracked encryption...?
are the 1.09 models most likely permanently unlockable or what?
Seems that the ROM is somehow read-only, and nobody knows how to avoid this problem so far. Seems that it is possible to downgrade bootloader to 1.04 with some ugly tricks...
i read downgrade is possible using downgrade_spl file (i found one but it is dated July 2005).
but i also read that even with downgraded bootloader, the radio section is not changeable. is this the first time that there has been a device with this read-only problem?
Seems so... And it's here, on my table.
That certainly is a *****...Any ideas what falls under warranty for your phone?
Maybe there is a way to get it changed for a different reason. So at least you
could get rid of the dead pixel.
Also it might be worth shopping around. Possibly some other stores might still have the previous version, there are 1000`s of stores. if you hassle them enough, you might succeed.
Get it changed for other reasons?!? Maybe I should drop it down from my window and ask for a warranty... I really have no idea what to do, warranty and other stuff is all in Japanese, and I'm not really able to read them... I was reding Cingular's manual and there they said that they will not replace the phone if there is only one dead pixel... It's probbably in the japanese warranty as well... I wonder why did they took my phone at all that day?!?
I already checked more than 20 stores before I bought it! I was so happy when I had finally found it, but now, who knows...
Pixel dead or not, it's even more important for me if this phone is going to become unlockable or not at some point...
question is...since they didnt replace it, why did they do a rom upgrade?
They must have been bored.
I find it disappointing that a company wouldnt replace a display with a dead pixel, especially since it is a QVGA screen, where a bright pixel is way more bothering than on a 17" or 19" TFT. So maybe it might be worth dropping (if covered by warranty)
Basically for now, you might not be able to upgrade/unlock your phone.
But it might be just a matter of time since someone here (or elsewhere) comes up with a solution. If you still need to get the phone UI to display english, Asukal is currently working on a MUI upgrade for WM 5.
This way you can at least have english.
These are the questions that I asked to myself too many times... I'm usualy an lucky person, but this was very strange... The thing is that I am not able to read the warranty because it japanese (way too complicated japanese for me...). If there is someone who would like to read this warranty in details and check what rights do we, X01HT users have, please...
Until than, I'm waiting for solution... I know about Asukal's work, I'm eager to to try it too, even if I can manage ok with Japanese interface for now... What I really lack is the ability to unlock it (since I would like to use this phone when I travel back home, from time to time...)

Im gonna get my wife to translate the warranty. I thought of the warranty procedure if you stuff up a rom upgrade. But i think they will flash your old phone again, and not replace it with a different one. Im not sure about that, maybe someone can fill you in on that.
I never had to get warranty for any of my phones, which is surprising, since i had 6 PDA phones.
You can also buy yourself an older version on yahoo auctions for around 45 000yen. then sell your at the same place...since its new, you might break even, but have the 1.06 bootloader
Thanks for good news! If you get it translated please write some summary here...
Basically, they dont cover anything...lol
If you drop it, water it, earthquake, dust, modify, sit on, step on, thunderstorm, missing details in warranty card (which is not filled out at all in my case...thanks SB), connect via USB and it breaks, all this is basically not covered by warranty... According to the warranty card included.
I dont know what warranty is for if major every day occurances are not covered.
ugly...
ugly indeed!

The warranty covers manufacturing defects or breakage not normally expected by normal wear and tear only. Any actions by the user (dropping, sitting on, bricking, etc.) are not covered. Another poster on the forum had was refused warranty service because Softbank / HTC discovered that the user had flashed the ROM. One dead pixel is not a warrantable repair. If you want the old 1.06 ROM, you had better buy one on Yahoo Auction and sell your old phone. You should also mention the dead pixel. Under Yahoo Auction and Japanese mail order/online and secondhand trading law, buyers are well within their right to return a product if all of the conditions and defects are not noted before the purchase. The market is causing prices of 1.06 ROMs to be worth more than 1.09 ROMs, and a dead pixel will probably knock another 3000yen or so off the price, so you should expect to make a loss on this trade.
if you want to break it and try to get warranty on it .. i would suggest you microwave it ;-)
Not too long just a 1-3 sec's with it wrapped in a dry cloth and the unit turned on - It will cause some really strange faults
Disclaimer:- Do at your own Risk ..

How about doing some evil chanting and ritual sacrifice dance around my phone, and then pour some blood into my USB port? Would that be covered by warranty?
Maybe .. depends on the chants ...

NOOBS COME HERE (Flame retardant zone)

So I've been a silent observer and massive leach on this forum for sometime, and I've felt like I should try to contribute something back to the community. I can't program ****, I'm little more than an adv. newb at this point. But I do understand how to flash roms, where to find things on the forum, Hard SPL, radio upgrades, REg edit, and all manner of things that most noobs don't. So the way I would like to give back to the community as a whole is to try to answer questions, ANY questions noobs might have without flaming them. My hope is that alot of the questions that annoy our senior members can be directed here, and I can help people find the answers to their questions. I usually check in 2 or 3 times a day, and as long as the traffic doesn't get overwhelming I'll do my best to help.
Thanks to all the chefs, Moderators, and senior members who contribute so much to keep me crack addicted to my stupid cell phone.
where can I find a threaded "palm" like sms application?
totally kidding, this is the most asked question on here i think.
I think rather than do a Q and A, see if you can post step by step "noob" questions defining the differences between hardSPL, radios, ... and why everyone talks about them.
That would be a good bit of information that we can add to the wiki. Just define the key words everyone talks about or something. Personally, I have flashed a few roms on my 8525s but still dont read enough to determine why people like the older radios vs the 1.48. and why some roms dont have radio and such vs ones that do. That alone would be beneficial to me.

From what I can tell people some people use older radios for several reasons.
1st Flashing the radio is potentially extremely perilous. It's not hard to do but if something goes wrong it CAN potentially brick your phone. Even if you have Hard SPL. Therefore some tend to be more conservative about flashing their radios. Roms are available without the radio for this reason as well, it's less dangerous and people have varying opinions about which radio is best
2nd which radio is best for you seems to depend somewhat on what area you live in, what service you have, and whether battery life or performance is more important to you. Their are various opinnions about which radio version is better but they all seem somewhat subjective. PEople report better signal strength with one version or another, or better battery life with one version or another. But from what I can tell 1.48 and 1.40.3 seem to be two of the favorites. 1.48 because it's new and doesn't seem to be causing TOO many problems, and 1.40.3 because its tested and most haven't had trouble with it.
Hope this helps.

Well since I like the idea of a flameproof zone, I will jump in here as well. Before you even consider posting a total newb question you should have read a couple of dozen posts, just like yours. Because then you would know that you would get flamed for not posting all of the important information. Are you using XP or Vista? what radio version are you using, what bootloader did your phone come with. What IPL/SPL?
my bad, IPL-1.01, SPL-1.40 Olipro. XP

There are detailed instructions on how to do this. AND it's very important that you do. Don't give up if you have problems getting hardspl as I'm sure you already know it makes flashing ROMS much safer.

There has hardly been any action here for weeks. So at this rate I'll be on to my next phone before I get "the ****s with the nooby questions" But your right if it takes off I'll probably regret it
alright, learned a lot in the last...day or so, flashed olipro finally, tried out some roms, settling with jasjammins black majik for the time being, and flashed radio 1.50. now time to figure out some more cool things to jump into
okay, the sim and cid unlocker is confusing the hell out of me... if i've installed hardspl 2.10 olipro and it enables supercid, then why do i need to unlock the sim or the cid...? do i need to use the unlocker in order to upgrade my rom to a new one...? i'm using an at&t 8525...
thanks for this thread by the way... sometimes i just need things to be explained in a plain clear fashion from people who know how to use the english language and sometimes when i read things on here the english language is butchered and things don't come across right and becomes confusing... i'm just looking for simple answers to simple questions...
from what ive gathered so far, olipro basically puts the device into a temporary supercid mode when flashing so you wont run the risk of bricking the phone via a corrupted cid, so i dont know why one would need to be permanently cid unlocked. And as far as sim unlocking, that is so that u can use ur phone with any carrier using sim cards, att, tmobile, etc. and if u have the 8525 and are using cingular i dont see why u would need to sim unlock unless ive missed something as im still a "noob" to a lot of this stuff but im workin on it

yeah, i'm still a noob more or less, but it's getting better... it's just some of this stuff is a little complicated and i like to see things done on a step by step basis, like a cookbook... here is the recipe and here are the ingredients and here is how you put them altogether and viola, a fine dish...
okay, i understand about the temp supercid when flash thanks to hardspl 2.10 olipro... i don't know why someone would need to have a permanently unlocked cid either, since i can't seem to find an explanation as to what a cid unlock will get you... a sim unlock i understand fully about moving the phone to other networks via a sim... i'm just interested in knowing if i have to do anything besides run hardspl 2.10 olipro to upgrade to a new rom...
im running with att, got my 8525 on ebay already unlocked with an older version of olipro installed and the black shadow rom. I flashed to the newest version of olipro (after a few difficulties with the 260 error which i havent really had since), flashed to a newer radio (1.50) and tried like 5 different roms. I have no idea if my phone is perma sid unlocked. If u want some step by step recipe type directions check out the mrvanx website and read one of the guides for installing one of the roms which are on there, starts off with installing olipro and goes thru till the end, and if the guide isnt dealing with the rom u want just substitute the one u want in

right... i went to mrvanx' site and read the instruction 10 times over... seems straight enough... i'm going to try out the tnt 2.0 6 meg+htc rom, but i wanted to start from scratch with the phone... right now i'm a little stuck... i tried a hard reset just to get everything back to where it was, but i don't think i'm doing it right or the at&t 8525 that i have (which is brand new from at&t) isn't giving me the screen i need to be seeing according to the wiki... the wiki states that if you want to hard reset, hold down the 2 softkeys (the two keys on the left and the right at the top of the keyboard) and press the reset switch with your stylus at the bottom of your device, then you should be presented with a screen that says 'R' for reset or 'X' for exit... i didn't get that screen at all, but it does do a reset (apparently), but my name and contacts are still intact... i thought a hard reset was a total wipe of the device... maybe i'm wrong...?
also, i go to the bootloader screen and it says herm100 ipl-1.04 and below that it says herm100 spl-2.10.olipro... most confusing...
okay... here is an update on the hard reset... i instead went into the clear settings applet and hard reset that way... however, when i do a bootloader screen check, it still says ipl-1.04 and spl-2.1.olipro... i thought it would change everything back... so now it is all clear... i'll reformat my minisd card to fat32 and then i'll install the new tnt 2.0 and see what happens... i'll keep you up to date on any issues...

Any experiences of returning flashed phones under warranty?

Hi all
Anyone here had any experiences of returning a flashed phone for a warranty claim? I wonder how carefully they inspect the set-up. I'm suffering very bad battery life (<4 hours) and a dead camera on my Vario II, but I'm sure T-Mobile won't accept a claim (WM6, Radio 1.43, HardSPL, unlocked etc).
I can revert some things, for instance I got the original T-Mobile WM5 installed OK but can't find the original Radio ROM (1.05).
If there's no hope I'll just open the bugger up and try jiggling the camera connector or just remove it completely!!
sim
if youre returning your phone to a brick and mortar store then as long as it looks unmodded then I don't think they'd notice. Like if you reflashed with the provider's logo, etc.... they are just sales people, MOST of them know very little about any technical aspect of the phone. From my experience of getting one of my phones exchanged the reps I spoke to were not able to answer my technical problems, which is why I replaced it... so i say go for it
Hi zammykoo,
Do they not send it back to a service centre for evaluation? I'm a bit worried that even if the shop gives me a replacement on the spot, they might check out my busted model later and then slap me with a penalty fee or something.
sim
what exactly is the problem you are having with the camera? if it is under warranty then shouldn't it cover manufacturer defects like that? if that is the case. and it should apply to the bad battery life too, if those things were not caused by you (like water damage, they can tell) then they wouldn't have anything to say..... but as far as software reflash then i really don't think it'll matter cause they will probably reflash it themselves to clear out any previous user settings before putting back on the market
Hi there,
I just found an official WM6 flash from T-Mobile UK, so I've flashed that and taken it back to the shop for repair. Thought I'd take a chance as the phone is effectively useless at the moment (camera is dead and battery loses 20% per hour).
Thanks for your advice!

Undo HardSPL? Mtty's format command clears everything?
Hi...I have a few questions about this topic as well.
It looks like my radio (hardware) died on me after a soft reset...I'd been having some problems with it before then. Anyways, I went through my provider's warranty exchange and I'm about to send my old handset back. My questions:
1) I'm stuck in the bootloader screen, since I couldn't upgrade my radio. I have Hard-SPL installed on my device, and you can see that (it says "Olipro" in the bootloader screen). Is there any way to remove Hard-SPL, or do you guys think I even need to worry/bother with that?
2) In the process of trying to reflash my phone and fix things myself, I used mtty and its format command...What exactly does that format? Is my phone's memory completely clean? That's fine by me if it is; I don't think that would be an issue with service personnel. I'm just wanting to know exactly what mtty's format does.
In addition, if anyone else has had to make a return under similar conditions, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience. THANKS!
i dont think any spl have a format command!!!!
r u kidding???
No, SPL's don't have a format command (that I know of!); I used this utility called mtty...I read about it here in the forums; it comes in handy when you're trying to recover from a bad flash, I think.
Anyone else have an answer to my questions?

tvone, thanks for taking the time to respond; I appreciate it.
Based on what you're telling me, I guess I won't worry about "downgrading" from HardSPL before taking it in.
If anyone has a different experience - or would just like to provide more reassurance (I'd love to have it!) - please let me know soon...I'll be taking care of this today!

NoGSM Error in Jasjam

Hi,
I have a Jasjam which is getting NoGSM errors. I believe this may be causing my hanging issues that I've been having a lot of.
I've had a look at the Wiki page on this, and a couple of things aren't very clear.
I'm currently running Bootloader SPL-1.10, and it says to go back to 1.04. Can I change to SPL-2.10Oli to do this as well (I guess this is easier).
Also, after this step, it says to Flash the patched radio to simunlock my jasjam, however it is already simunlocked.
I just wanted to clarify these things before giving this a go, so if anybody can enlighten me it would be greatly appreciated, as it is really starting to get to me.
Thanks for your help.

NoGSM Error in Jasjam - clarification of wiki
Just wanted to change the title...
Just wanted to bump this to see if anybody can help me out. I'm still having NoGSM problems, have tried the fix on the Wiki, but things aren't completely clear, as so far it hasn't made any difference.
Sorry mate, probably because no-one HAS a surefire method to fix the "No GSM" problem. Lots of people claim that something fixed it but they seem to keep popping up in the threads still trying to fix their problem. You might have to just try everything until you either give up or something noticeably improves or someone pulls the answer out of thin air.. We all live under the threat of "No GSM" and dread the day if/when it will finally arrive... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you can shoot me til your hearts content.
Cheers...
Thanks for that, so pretty much I should keep on trying to flash different radios until I find one that sticks around for a while?
Would try to flash a stock rom 1st. What Telco are you with? Use their "Official"rom and see if that works. THEN go nus trying radio only roms. Chances are though that if you can't flash 1 radio rom your radio has been corrupted and is unrecoverable.
Good Luck

Hi, I've got a Jasjam (so therefore it's a Telstra phone). I've gone from the official rom to unofficial roms and back again. I've installed individual radio roms. Most things go onto the phone fine, and it will work perfectly for maybe half a day, and then it crashes, and when I restart I get NoGSM. I might reset it 5 times, and then the radio will come back.
I bought it on ebay, but I've managed to get hold of the details to get a duplicate invoice, so I've put the phone back onto Telstra ROM and a standard SPL, and I'm going to get them to have a look at it, as it looks as though it's a hardware problem, unless any of you smart bods here have other ideas...
Can anybody shed any extra light before I take it into the shop? Just don't want to admit defeat if I can
If you can, the best way to fix is through warranty. If they try to fix 3 times and fail they have to give you a new handset. I believe Telstra no longer have the jasjams so you might be upgraded to the Tytn II.
Cheers....

[Q] Bricked my HD2 within 3 hours. Help?

Well, after 9 months of lusting after this phone I finally got one. I wanted one with the intention of putting WP7 Mango on it and having a cheap WP7 phone.
I finally got one for $150 with money saved up from both Christmas and my birthday, but it had Android installed. I flashed an energy ROM on it, and played with that for a couple hours. I then looked at this thread:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/wp7-hd2/139787-how-flash-wp7-your-hd2.html
to see how to put WP7 on it. I downloaded "World Wide English (WWE) 1.66.405.2" since the thread says it has a .50 radio. Well, it seems it doesn't, because now I've got the same brick that happens when you flash a .51 radio.
No poweron, no tricolor screen, nothing. Occasionally I'll get a short chirp from the vibrator motor, but that's it. My computer makes no indication whatsoever of its existence.
Is my phone past DIY help? Would a cell phone repair store be able to do anything? Any clue how much they would charge for it?
Thanks a million
That's pretty unlucky, but also demonstrates why you shouldn't just blindly follow guides without some understanding of what's going on.
The rule for tmous isn't quite as simple as "..50.. radios only",, because 2.04.50 and 2.05.50 are also ..51.. radios.
Also, that rom you flashed usually comes with 2.06.51, so you probably got caught by a filename error, but that still doesn't excuse it properly, since had you read around the forum you would 1 - see the line " all non tmous stock roms WILL brick a tmous," (even without the radio, the rom wouldn't boot on your phone anyway) and 2. - you would have discovered that using hspl3 or Hspl4.would have done what you wanted without downgrading your rom.
so, unlucky, its bricked. JTAG will save it or new mainboard, and I'm betting you never dive in so quickly again!
(Before you start ranting about HTC and what a stupid phone, blah blah, remember it was t mo who asked HTC for a "special version",,, its all t mo's fault)

I had no understanding of what the previous owner put on the device, I wanted to get it back to complete stock and try from scratch, mostly for the experience of doing it myself (something I enjoy doing). I don't know what amount of reading around would have saved me from a poorly-named file, but whatever.
Looks like I can get it JTAG'd for $40+sh, though I'm kind of hoping I can find someone cheaper on XDA-developers (this other guy is on eBay).
I guess that turns this thread into: Where's the best place I can send my phone to have it JTAG'd?
Ahh its not simply a 0 being a 1 in the filename.
for future reference the only stock roms you can flash will say TMOUS in the filename, and will never ever be rom version 1.x. , valid tmous rom versions are 2.10 2.13 and 3.14.
As for "what amount of reading..", did you find the dedicated tmous section of this forum yet?
(Not trying to be funny, just edjumacation!)
