Installation of HTC USB modem driver into Windows XP
I am sorry to bother here, unfortunatelly, I have a problem. I can not install the USB driver into Windows XP on my PC. If I open an inf file, no modems are listed. I have Win XP home CZ (Czech). What could be a problem? Bad driver? Is there another driver? Thank you very much for your answer.

unfortunately
these are for an XDA II ... so we are still at the
"How can we use XDA I as a wireless modem on WM2003 (except the DE version) ?" stage.
Anyone has options or solutions. I hate to carry another GPRS phone along the XDA just to connect my laptop.

This is a great howto document but my understanding is (and I have checked on my PPC) their is no wmodem.exe software.
The problem is as follows.
The entire wmodem is using rilgsm (and the radio software part) in order to work.
So from this poin it is impossible to make it happen.
What I suggested, but since my PPC programming skills are low, is to find a program that simulates a proxy on our XDA. Meaning that the XDA is used as a gateway from the computer.
The proper definition is, i think, "reverse passthrough".
The starting point can be the Remote Control software that display the XDA image on PC ...
Anyone has seen such app ... or has it in development ?

wireless modem
i had a standard german rom as i bought my xda, and there was also no wireless modem app.
but if you install another rom, like the wm2003 one, or the special rom from xda-developers, the wireless modem app is already installed.
my problem is, when i connect my modem after a while(about 15-20 minutes) or if i open more than one webpages at the same time, the modem doesn't work anymore, and i have to reset my xda. I have tried with another handphone(nokia 6800) and it worked properly. Does anyone knoe why this happened ?

there is one from microsoft. its called remote display control. but it only work with activesync, and if the activesync connected to xda, the internet connection from the xda won't be used, instead the xda will try to connect via your pc.
Small point... if you look at benmuliono's post it was for XDA2 not XDA1...
HTC USB modem driver
Good day,
about my post, there is a misunderstanding. There is no problem with XDA I or XDA II and wireless modem application (for the present). There is a problem with a driver usbmdm.inf and its installation into the Win XP CZ, because the USBMDM.INF file is not recognized as the driver by my Win XP CZ (HTC USB modem does not appear in installation window).
Thus, if the wireless modem application is running on the XDA, the info "new hardware is detected ..." appears. Then, I want install the modem into the system, but I am not succefull.
I try to make connection with XDA II of my friend, although I am an owner of XDA I (which is shown in left side). That is probably the source of the misunderstanding.
I am looking for somebody who has similar problem or has a working driver for my system and would be so kind to send it to me ([email protected]).
Thank in advance for your help,

xda as modem for laptop
After 3 months and 463 hairs later, I have finally figured a work-around for turning our xda (1)'s into a USB modem for internet access via GPRS. I will have it available for download on my website for only $20.00 beginning 7/20/04. it will be available through PAYPAL only. (I know this is worth a lot more than twenty dollars, but I wanted everyone who wants it to be ablle to afford it.)
how
how can you demonstrate this first.
this is interesting ... but a.f.a.i.k. it is not possible.
are we talking about any WM2003 ROM and only with the wmodem software ?
F.A.I.K.
it will be available for any english wm 2003 rom , (propriatary) software pkg,
I understand the skeptisism, but will not be releasing a demo or trial version. this has always been possible as I understand it, it has just been squashed by the manufacturers and software giant. just a couple more days and everyone will be happy.
DMW
good
this will be indeed great. i'm close to buy an expensive pcmcia GSM card for my laptop but this will be a great alternative.
can you tell me this:
* the pc will use all ports for connexions (not limited lika a proxy) ?
* will the receive function be disabled or when a call comes it just suspend data and allow call ?
* do we need to install software on xda and pc too ?
* are there any inconveniences from your point of view ?
* can you at least post some screenshots or anything "tangible"
* what transfer rate have you achieved ?
Thanks for your ideea and making it practical.
?
i guess that no news is bad news.
so be it!

possible fix for "Error 692"
@puneet_84:
I too followed the installation instructions exactly, but had Error 692. After extensive web-searching, found the solution. Hope it works for you - it did for me. (But no guarantee!)
http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=78789
On trial and errors testing out various config changes I found that the key cause of my XP popping out the Error 692 is when I disabled Modem Compression at any end whether one and not the other or both (meaning the setting at modem properties in the Control Panel and the modem properties in the Dialup networking sections).
The fact is Modem Compression must be enabled on the Control Panel modem properties for the HTC USB modem and the modem properties in the corresponding dialup networking configuration.

Hey Guys,
I'm running WM5, 1.50g for more than a week now.
Its simply wonderful.
there are some compatibiltiy issues witih the S/Ws now; but that'll be there. we were able to use this OS before the release thats the big thing.
I'm looking for two piece of info here.
1> Wireless USB modem is not working - does anyone have any idea? inputs on this? (i didnt try to mix this topic with non-woking buttons; hope thats okay and we can close the topic as soon as its resolved)
2> I'm on 1.50g now and able to use large amount of storage mem. I was running 1.60a earlier and cud not use large mem (just about 14M for storage) where I had to store all my email data and the loaded S/Ws. due to the space crunch; I had to come back to 1.50g.
As the 1.60a is faster (i heard so - cud not test and fall back to 1.50g imm.) and i'd like to go for that. Does anyone has got any idea how to make use of the 120MB memory in 1.60a to be used for my email storage and to be able to load S/Ws and data on it?
Thanks in advace.
Wireless USB modem on WM5
hey guys,
just reviewing whether anyone has contributed!
I saw another thread "Warning WM5 1.60a and Extended _rom" and I think, I can get around a way on how to make use of that 120mb program memory in 1.60a and i'll definitely going to try that once I hv the steps with me.
as regards the Wireless USB Modem; I think i'm the only person who's facing this issue or may be fewer ppl. if anyone's using I-mate PPC phone with WM5 with working application (wireless USB modem) please share ur configuration with me.
thanks.
Updating the topic to expand the audiance and expacting at least one response
I am also having a problem with the USB Modem... It says "com open error (8)"
hello Duan,
have u found any resolution yet?
Nope... And after searching around the net I still have had no success.
Hey Guys,
I'm switching back to the WM2K3 SE now. I think its high time; we do not have any idea about the USB modem functionalities that's most important while we use the device as a modem while away from home or office.
I was okay with Camera, Record and all other facilities not available. I'm not in for all those flashy features but I have to have my Voice and Data connectivity inplace thats more than important for me anytime.
So, Guys; please please let me know once we have a solution for the Wireless USB / BT modem.
Thanks.
Wireless Modem on WM5
Went back to the 1.60b now coz i thought I have now got the BT adapter / dongle.
However, I'm not able to use the BT wireless modem with the adapter itself.
as I said.. as soon as i start the wireless modem application the signal indicator doesnt show the cross mark on it and continue show the signal strength. otherwise I think my lappy is able to detect the phone and everything works fine except the modem application.
I downgraded to a couple of versions of SE now (I have now forgotten how many times I flashed my device - guys let me know if its harmful to flash the device multiple times - now a days its about almost everyday I flash my device, thanks to my exch servr that hold my data). I tried 2.20SE I also tried the latest one thats been converted to english by Buzz and tried to start the BT modem application - no luck - same symptoms.
and again I flashed my device with 1.60b (along with the DCR ). However, the BT modem or USB modem issue is not resolved.
I'd really appreciate if someone can help me with the Modem application PLEAZEEE - PLEAZEE.
THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE --
Yeah forgot to tell ya - I'm using iMate Pocket PC Phone Edition.
Guys, please try this configuration on WM5 as bluetooth modem, remove any connection on 'My Isp', start wireless modem application & dial...
FYI, I use 1.06b rom & billionton usb dongle. Btw I can't determine which modem type it use (cell line / gprs / etc.).

while i have not gotten the wireless modem to work, i have successfully started and seen the connection icon turn yellow. having written that, i started getting the "com open error" after adding com ports under bluetooth set-up. deleting those ports under bluetooth eliminated the error for usb in wireless modem application.
separately, in order to see the modem in my phone & modem control panel, i had to press start in wireless modem prior to tethering the device to my thinkpad.
btw, i am running wm5 on a ppc6700 (cdma/ev-do version of the htc apache, i believe.)

i think most of you x01ht users in japan are aware that softbank issued a new rom update that has the new open.softbank.ne.jp password hard-coded as part of the rom image and so there's no way to extract it via extended rom or otherwise (it's not in the preconfig cabs/xmls either). they've also announced that after april 1, the old password which most of in japan are currently using will no longer work so we either upgrade to the new softbank rom or we can't access the open network.
anyway, i've been fiddling with this all night and i think i have a solution that i've tested on a couple of different roms but i'm hoping you guys can give it a try as well so that we can call this a solution to the problem. basically, i made the assumption that the password was somewhere hidden and encrypted in the registry though i had no idea where so basically all i did was do a registry dump with a clean install of the new sb rom, went into connections and deleted the softbank connection, then did another registry dump. finally, i did a compare of the before and after using windiff, figured out what changed and i ended up with the attached two reg files. one adds "SoftBank" as one of the connections (hklm.reg) and the other is the encrypted password (hkcu.reg). you need to import these using the registry plug-in that comes with resco explorer (just dl the trial) as that's what i used and it seemed to work. also, after you do the imports, MAKE SURE you power off (not reset) and then power back on. sometimes the registry settings don't stick if you simply reboot.
to really verify this works, you should first go in and delete your existing SoftBank connection in settings->connections tab->connections->manage existing connections (under internet). if you're not confident then go ahead do a backup beforehand or you can just run the sb extended rom again if you can't get it to work. i've tried this with the sb rom as well as an i-mate rom and it's working perfectly...i'll test it with a couple other tomorrow as well. if this works for you guys, i'll go ahead and make it into a cab file.
update: okay, i've gone ahead and made it into a cab so you don't have to muck around with importing reg files. so just download the cab if you want to run a simple cab install. the zip file contains the reg files if you want to manually import yourself. i've tested both and they work fine. again, i must emphasize that you power off after installing it and not just soft reset. try it out and let me know.
FOR THOSE OF YOU DOING CLEAN INSTALLS:
i didn't realize this but when you do a clean install, you still have to install a couple of the sb extended roms before you run my cab. specifically, you need to run PP_ConnVKK_1.33.761.1.CAB and Provisioning.exe to set up the device to even be able to accept the new password/settings. run PP_ConnVKK_1.33.761.1.CAB first and then Provisioning.exe...now once you run provisioning.exe, you'll find that it automatically creates the old SoftBank connection for you under internet->manage existing connections with the OLD password. go ahead and delete this connection, reboot (optional) and then run my cab (new sb settings.cab). power down and up again and it should work.
just to be sure i did a file compare of the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\SoftBank] "Entry" and "DevCfg" keys/entries with the old SoftBank setting active and with the new SoftBank settings active and the file compare showed that the contents were completely different. i was worried that maybe somehow the system was just somehow reviving the old password and not actually using the new one but this does not appear to be the case.
UPDATE:
after some more experimenting, it seems that the cab just restores the sb connection with whatever username/pass that you had installed previously. if you delete the the new opensoftbank username connection and then run the cab, it restores the opensoftbank username/password. if you delete the old "open" username connection, it restores that. very strange since the file compare shows that this registry dump (taken from new rom with new settings) is significantly different than a dump taken from a rom with the old settings yet it is somehow restoring the old settings. thanks for looking into this but for now, i think we have to say that this isn't working. so it seems that password is not simply stored in the registry. it must be in some hidden file that this registry dump somehow activates. in any case, i'll keep working over the coming weeks. sorry for getting everyone's hopes up.
Wow, I think that is great news for every Softbank customer!
Thanks it worked for me. I guess I will find out in April if it will work. I will cross my fingers.
Great job!!
You are the man! Great!!
thanks for checking! are you saying you're unsure if the file actually contains the NEW password and not the old one? well, it's definitely the new password as i created these files using only the new rom, a reg editor and a file compare tool so the old password never entered the picture.
you can actually run this exercise yourself and just repeat the steps i did if you want to be sure as the methodology is pretty simple. all i did was find where the encryped passwd was stored in registry and just imported it over to a different rom as is, encryption in tact. i've made no attempt to hack the actual passwd--we still have no idea what it is but as long as we can use the new settings, finding out what the passwd actually is unnecessary.

i haven't tried this yet, but if it works for you using the new ap opensoftbank now, i believe you don't have to wait until april to see if it'll work. those who've already upgraded theirs to the new rom should be using that new ap already.
i must try this myself later today.
trialdei, thanks for the great work.
that is indeed a great news, I was also wondering how to find this in the registery but was not sure that the different key I found were the correct ones. I will try on my other Hermes tonight and we shall see ! But the very promissing point here is that potentially I can even use these files for my universal and the mteor... which means... if you don't like the crap of the SB roms... just buy a WM5 device everywhere U want and put these regkeys !!!
Good job Man !!!
Yes this is great news, I think we might still need the password to use the phone as a modem connected to a notebook.
I think that is exactly what softbank does not want us users using the connection for since we would use the internet more.

actually, i don't think you need to enter the password on the pc side at all to use the phone as a modem. check this post:

how about us with new sb rom... i don't see any wireless modem application on my phone... do you have a cab file for the wireless modem app alone?. i can't find it from ftp...
guys,
softbank is blocking the modem usage with a pc and it seems that's controlled at their open ap. i don't believe that's anything to do with the password nor the applications you use. you can fire up dun on your pc with x01ht connected via usb or bt, but the connection will fail.

i think you're probably right but then i wonder what's the point of establishing the new password in the first place if the modem usage isn't an issue for them either way? all of the x01ht's making their way to hk and abroad aren't going to be used on the sb network anyway. the new read-only radio rom takes care of simlocking already so the new passwd solves what? they just don't like the idea of people running around with foreign language roms accessing their network?

i think they don't want people without the flat rate data tariff contract to use the open ap to cap the monthly pay. there are quite a few people in japan who just had the vodafone contract and running universal or hermes bought from elsewhere.
now that i have your registry solution for the new password, i cannot resist testing it on my universal. if it works, i don't have to retire my universal after april 1. thanks again.

i'm a newbie on this topic softbank open access.
so what is the main purpose of having this option available for the user.
is it allow the user to have the internet access over the softbank network.
and also if possible, please guide where i can find addititional softbank open access setup instruction, besides the information is already provided by trialdie's original post on this string.
please advice.
found the existing thread on softbank open access (unlock softbank x01ht thread). got the answer from there.
great!
this is great! i was having problems with the new sb rom and asukal's mui... i can't seem to get any network signal or even passthrough connections with that combination..
i'll try this one with the new htc rom from south africa, it may work for me.

hi qtotter,
you need to make sure your registry settings are sticking...did you power off/on. the below new registry keys/entries should show up if you did it right:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Comm\RasBook\SoftBank]
"Entry"
"DevCfg"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections\SoftBank]
"ConnectionGUID"
"SecureLevel"
"Secure"
"AlwaysOn"
"RequirePw"
"Enabled"
"EntryType"
"DestId"
if you don't see these new keys/entries then your registry changes aren't sticking.

After I posted ROM-cooking method to create new SoftBank flat-rate data connection, another Japanese X01HT user has found more easier way today.
I would like to introduce new method with respect for his great work...
Now you DON'T need ROM cooking!
Step 1. Unzip the attached file, and run either ConnSBM.CAB or ConnSBM_noproxy.CAB for your purpose.
ConnSBM.CAB: make a connection, overwrite WirelessMgr_Service.dll and enable hidden proxy (webopen.softbank.ne.jp:8080), it is fully compatible as X01HT's standard connection.
ConnSBM_noproxy.CAB: just make a connection (no WirelessMgr_Service.dll and hidden proxy installation).
The connection will be created, however password entry is still empty at this moment.
Step 2. Run ORE2cert.cab (self-signature certificate for WIFIwake.exe).
Step 3. Copy Out.xml and WIFIwake.exe into \Windows folder.
Step 4. Just RUN WIFIwake.exe from \Windows.
The password will be created into the connection made by ConnSBM.CAB.
To confirm whether success or not, check the connection "Internet > SoftBank", and click "Edit -> Next -> Next". If "****************" is shown at the Password field, the password has been successfully created.
Enjoy!
EDIT: Updated WIFIwake.exe as self-signed version. I've prepared Hermes and Universal version separately (the difference is internal string for each model name). For Universal, at least I could have successfully made the connection on the DarkForce WM6 for Universal.
Download ConnSBM_ORE2h.zip (for Hermes X01HT) or ConnSBM_ORE2u.zip (for Universal JASJAR) and try it again if the password is still blank.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: It seems to depend on CID...
To make this operation correct on non-SuperCID device, it requires to edit internal device name and CID. The attached file for Hermes seems workable for X01HT(Model: HERM200/CID: VODAK801) or SuperCIDed HERM200 device only, and for Universal, also only for JASJAR (PU10/CDL__001) or SuperCIDed device.
If you cannot create PW, you need to edit CID (01C798h-01C7A7h) using Unicode or UTF-16 mode of binary editor (for non-HERM200 or PU10 device, Model [01C760h-01C76Fh] also), and sign yourself... However, if you burn them into your cooked ROM, it may works correctly without edit binary (I've successed on my JASJAR, using original WIFIwake.exe from X01HT).
You can determine your CID using info 2 command of mtty.exe.
Too bad I alreday cooked mine...
great!!
it's perfect work on my x01ht with wm6lvsw edition!!
thank you
WOW! Amazing! Beautiful!
Thank you so much! I love it!
Will you understand the password?
Because it is necessary when using it from the personal computer as a
modem.
Doesn't work with Treo 750v
It seems this CAB utilize WiFi manager or something?
When I extracted the files from ZIP and executed the CAB, copy the Out.xml and WIFIwake.exe to \Windows folder and executed WIFIwake.exe, nothing happens. The connection Internet was created but the password is still blank.
Password Not Made in My hTc Universal
Hi Itamae!
Very Very Good Job!!
But Dont Create Password in my Universal.Of course installing According to the procedure.
Please Help.
My Universal is 02 Xda Exec
ROM:2.10.04JPN
Radio:1.08
Nice, I was messing around and the wifiwake will not put the password without the out.xml file but I was able to edit the text in the out.xml (which was about 300 letter As) and add some more random letters in there and it created it. Anyone think they can decompile the exe and look for the actual password?
Succeeded New SoftBank AP!!
VeryVery Thanks Itamae!!

Not only Hermes JPN cross bow has came!
But also Soft bank connection in defualt!

It is, and I am very grateful for the instructions in the OP. Without them I would be lost.

not working with dark force 2.0
It is bad news!
I just think to upgrade to Black v2.0.
Any reason for this?
Waiting for your work-around!
I am using MicorX WM6 which includes this batch in the rom.
It surely works well after April.

In P3600 software update space, in the HTC Europe website, yuo can download a configurator, easy to use, to set up ANY mobile operator in all european counties supported. Internet, Wap, MMS, ...
It works not only for P3600 but also with my HTC S620, TyTN WM6 black 2.0 edition!

Thanks man, I'll give this a go next time I flash

Could anyone who tries it for Orange UK confirm if it works.
I jut ran it quickly but only had time for a quick look. Initially seemed OK for internet but PIE would not connect (said connection error) - ran out of time and so reran the cab I use for settings (rabdos original cab I think) and then the connection worked.
Might look at it again later.
GTG.

Thanks man, very usefull link.
This is a "must have" for all of me that test every new ROM
Edit: Tried with Orange Spain, but dosn't work as expected. Adds Orange GPRS, WAP and MMS entries in Conecctions, but left blank access point name and Username and pass, so the connectcion fails.
Anyone have the same issue?
Thanks.
Edit2: This is the CAB modified with correct settings for Orange Spain.
Orange UK Worked Here
I Recieved An MMS Message And Synced My Hermes With An Exchange Server Over GPRS/3G. So Don't Know What Went On With Your Connection.
Cheers
Great H3GSweden worked also, thanks.
Great tool but....
when i install the configuration for germany and i also want this for austria, the german will be overwritten when i install the austrian configuration.
when i travel beetween three countrys this is not good because i take not every time my notebook with me.
Now is time for developers to convert in a PPC application all configuration files!
You have all the info's
cool thanks a lot dude
@heimerdinger.
Don't Quote Me On This One But, If You Dont Connect Your Hermes To Your PC And Then Run This Installer For The Language You Want. The Cab File That You Tried To Install Gets Saved To A Temp Folder To Be Installed The Next Time You Connect Your Device.
So Install The German And Austrian Languages Without Connecting Your Hermes, Then Search For The Cab Files. Copy Them Onto Your Device Then You Just Run Them When You Swap Between Countries.
Someone Please Correct Me If Im Wrong
Cheers
The Cab Files From The UK Installer Have Been Extracted You Can Download Them From This Thread

You execute the installation sofware without phone connected, and get a message that says "next time you connect your phone, the soft installs". Before click in OK, search in Temp folder for the CAB. You will find it.
If you click OK, the installation software deletes the CAB.
