Please help! I have a Softbank HTC Tytn and just came across this amazing forum today. I'm a techno-literate person so this is even more frustrating... I simply cannot get Activesync (or my laptop for that matter) to recognize my Tytn...
When connected via USB it appears under Network Adaptors in my Device Manager as "Windows Mobile-based Device #3" and has the ! because it has no drivers.
I'm using Activesync 4.2 worldwide English version downloaded from the Microsoft site.
Please help me, I became very excited at the prospect of unlocking this awesome phone but then was crushed to find I couldn't even begin the first step!
I have the USB cable plugged directly into the laptop, not via a passthru like a hub, and I have tried it in multiple ports without success.
Save me guys, please!
Perhaps my problem is that I don't have a driver for the device that allows Windows XP to recognize it?
Could someone please post a link, or the file itself, of the driver you use for your HTC?
You should not need any special drivers just for activesync or usb-serial connections to the device.
Drivers are only needed if you want to use it as a modem.
then has anyone else had this problem? do you have any suggestions pof? this is driving me nuts...

Disable activesync if it is connected, put the device in bootloader mode and try to connect to it using mtty. If you get the "USB>" prompt you can do everything, you don't need activesync at all for unlocking or flashing roms, everything can be started with the device in bootloader mode.
if it sheds any light on the problem, when i plug it in instead of the usual "do-doo" rising intonation sound you get with a successful USB interface, i get a "duhduhduh" meaning it's connected, but not recognized...
ok i'll try that, sorry i wasn't aware that getting activesync to work wasn't a prerequisite for the other steps
i've never felt so stupid
i've downloaded mtty, and read and reread the wiki
my hermes is in bootloader mode, and mtty connects on port 3 but i don't get a USB> prompt, i just get a window named "COM3 115200 N-8-1" and a nice empty white space
i have no idea what to do now
i was planning on following this seemingly effortless writeup/summary by okinz:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=280566&page=9
but now i've got nothing.
i'm really sorry to bother you, but please don't give up on me!
i cannot make a connection using USB with mtty btw... forgot to include that
1) dumb question: did you select "USB" on mtty drop down list?
2) Do you have another computer where you can try?
3) Which windows version are you using?

1) yes, no connection
2) i just tried just plugging in the Tytn on my roommate's laptop, he got a different usb message, windows recognized it as a "Generic NDIS device" but failed to install it for lack of driver, is this what is supposed to happen? mine doesn't do this at all
3) windows XP SP2
update - just rebooted for about the 10th time and this time it recognized it as an NDIS and activesync has found it
i guess it was just a windows thing... *shrugs* i'll post again once i've tried the next steps
thank you pof, thank you very very much for sticking with me

Hi.
I am a bit embarrassed about writing this, I never thought I would make a brick of my Prophet during “upgrades”...
But here I am, with a phone that don't want to sync with any computer after I accidentally pressed cancel on an active sync dialog box asking for setup with a new device, during upgrade to the latest Touch VIII. Have upgraded several times with several different ROM’s before, but this time things went wrong.
If I choose to start my device normally, it goes trough the HTC screen and stops after the Qtek (HTC in Norway) screen listing the different versions of the hardware…
When I restart to boot loader (Cam button + reset) the 3 colours turn up ok, but when I put an USB cable in the device and the lower, left part of the screen shows USB, active sync will not recognise any new device no matter what I do.
I can still find the Prophet when I go to properties on the computer, but somehow active sync does not care about that.
Are there any way to use a program at the host computer to sync properly with the Prophet?
I would really appreciate any help that could rectify this problem.
Regards, Lars Norway

Tried the info there without success...
The guide assumes that you have connection with ActiveSync, but I can not seem to get connection.
So, I really need some advice about how to make a connection to the computer I will make the programming from, when ActiveSync is not working properly.
Have tried to restart both the device and the host computer, have reinstalled ActiveSync, have tried to start the different roms without having a connection to A.S., but no luck...
Have realized my mistake and bought a new Prophet, but would still like to get the old one working again.
it has nothing to do with activesync.
Not sure u really understand the below statement from the thread I mentioned.
RECOVERING FROM ERROR IN STEP 8 WM5->WM6
1. Don't panic
2. Don't panic
3. Unplug the phone
4. Reset with stylus, and keep the Camera Button pressed.
5. A 3 color screen will appear(Bootloader Screen)
6. Connect your device with your PC,and run the NVID(no vendor) WM5 rom.
7. The device will be resetted after RUU(rom update utility)finishes
8. Repeat the WM6 upgrade,from STEP 5..
in case you can't NVID roms, you can still use those step1 roms mentioned by ROM gurus here.

Well, the problem is that I am not able to connect...
As far as I understand, the only way to connect is by using ActiveSync?
Regards
connect = the cable between prophet and your pc. after that just run the rom update utility. just dun bother the activesync (does it sound logical to u to establish activesync in bootloader mode?)
OK, I have tried it, but will try on some different computers also.
Posting in a couple of hours.
Thanks for your help so far!
then wish u good luck. happy un-bricking.
OK, same as before.
Depending on which ROM I try, the following messages are the result:
Error [300]: Invalid update tool.
Error [274]: Connection (The update utillity cannot connect to your PDA phone.)
If I try the Touch VIII direct, it stops in Initializing for a while, and then a message appears with the text: Cannot connect to device, Would I like to try again?
Besides, in the welcome screen during the "ROMUpdateUtility_NV_G4.exe" in the Prophet_PV_Temp program, step nr. 2. asks me to ""Establish an ActiceSync connection with your PDA phone."
So, no change from yesterday yet...
are you using windows vistA???
Have only been using computer with XP Pro installed.
Anybody of the opinion that the connection tools built into Vista might do a better job?

No, on the contrary. The best change you have is XP. Zeroed asked about Vista because it could be the reason of your troubles.
What I should do is just one detail different of what you have already tried:
Put the prophet in bootloader.
DISable "allow USB conection" in the conection-setting panel of ActiveSync
Connect your prophet with the USB cable
Run the NVID RUU again
If that is succesfull, you can upgrade to the WM6 ROM you like.
OK, will do.
Tried Vista just now, same errors and no luck.
Be posting in a minute...
OK, now I'm back.
Made a restart of the host computer, changed settings in ActiveSync, startet my device in Bootloader...
But unfortunately, no more success this time either.
Feel that the device must be more seriously defective/broken than others, this mishap happend at the end of the programming, when the 3 partitions were being written in the device. I was loading Touch VIII...
Anybody know if there is any more combination of buttons or reset methodes I could try?
Next step is to start opening the Prophet...

Just wondering if your computer detects prophet as a device at all? Does the normal plug device sound comes on when you plug in? Just a long shot, stick in a SD card and try with windows media player to see if it can sync or put files onto SD card. if so, get rom refreshed via SD card...
try few hard resets before you try this.
Not quite sure I understood what you suggested. I can get the device up in the host computers machine properties, but there is no way to get it up in any other program - like the Windows explorer.
Or are you saying that there is a way to boot the Prophet directly from a SD card? That would impress me!!!

This sounds dumb, but try restarting your PC, closing all apps running in background (including firewalls), restarting Prophet (with stylus in reset hole). DO NOT TRY TO USE ACTIVE SYNC. Boot into bootloader (Three colours screen), connect USB cable and flash QTEK lastest official, or Jesterz AKU 3.3 (I have found this ROM to have magical powers of unbricking.)
Good luck!

Hmm this is wierd.I ran into problem earlier this month trying to flash a ROM but got stuck somewhere. So I followed the steps given in the sticky thread. Everything work smoothly. I am using XP SP2 and mine is a G3.
Let's make the assumption that your PDA is not faulty. Maybe you can try the steps again but this time :-
1. Change to another USB cable (or you may test the existing cable by connecting to a working pda)
2. Change to another USB port
3. Make sure you are not running any program that hogs the USB resource
4. If you are using USB hub, please don't connect using it. Make a direct connection to your computer.
that's all I can offer now...hope it helps.
Hello,
Im trying to flash my phone but having a issue
So i have added the insecure kernel but when i try and do the next part (Run S2 Root) i get the following error
Device is not connected! Please connect the USB cables and try again
Im running the following
S2 Root 1.5.1
Android Version 2.3.6
Kernel Version I9100XWKJ2
Anyone able to help its annoying the hell out of me have tried different USB ports get the same issue
Make sure samsung drivers are installed, try different USB ports, check USB debugging in settings.
If it doesnt work again, try it with a different computer if possible.
Ok when i turn off USB debugging on the phone the PC will connect to it. When it is on it wont?

Hey
In Android, when you plug in via USB your phone to your PC, in the notification bar, a option is given to show the device as a USB drive. I dont get that option any more and I dont see anywhere to enable it or select it.
How can I do this?
This might be stupid question, but did you try to restart phone and pc?

Yes.
Maybe there is a app for Android to launch itself into storage mode, thinking a USB cable is connected to it and at the same time a PC? Its just strange.
Ive also tried with other USB cables still nothing.

How do I know if I have fast charge enabled?
Also in recovery, as you know, there is a option to enable USB storage which also makes your phone's SD card be viewable in explorer. That doesnt work either.
Im starting to think it is a kernel problem.
Try Flashing the new Clock Work Mod Recovery, I found it in the One X forums and I tried it it worked and it might work for you let me just find it

@riahc3
Why don't you try what he said, just do this steps.
go to Settings > Applications > Development > find the USB Debugging Mode over there and check whether it is enabled or not.
USB Debugging Mode can be used to copy data between your computer and your device, install applications on your device without notification.
and of course, without java installed on your PC Desktop or Laptop, connectivity between your android phone and PC would create some problems, be sure to update your Java if you have already installed.
And to clarify the issue of fast charger mode. I think it's not related to your problem since you cannot understand what fast charger mode and how to do it in the first place, am I right?. There's a procedure on how to do a fast charger mod and if you want a proof, visit this link which can be found here in XDA, Charger mod, how to USB fast charge.
Hope it helps

Have you installed the Kies drivers on your computer? I'm not 100% sure, but I think you may need USB Debugging enabled too. Try these and then try again. Remember to make sure you have killed all Kies related processes from your Task Manager before using Odin, as it could potentially mess up the flashing process.
Do you have Samsung Kies and all its necessary drivers installed?
*EDIT* Sorry, it seems like i didn't see your comment.

Ok, try these steps I found on Microsoft's support website:
As all the hardware devices have drivers associated similarly USB devices also have it. Sometimes proper drivers do not get detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issues.
You may check after uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers if you are able to connect. You may disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click System and Maintenance, click System, and then click Device Manager.
* Note * If Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click System, and then click Device Manager.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
3. In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
Check if at all there is an exclamation mark along the driver, it suggests issues with the driver installed.
4. Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.
If you still face the same issue then you may check for the updated USB device drivers using windows update.
no luck

Try a different Micro-USB cable if possible, and in different USB ports in your computer.
Also try this:
1. Hold your phone and look at the micro USB connector on the bottom edge of your phone.
2. You will see a "tongue" inside the USB port.
3. Put something "non metalic" (I used a flat wooden toothpick) in the port. Gently, lift up the "tongue". I used a twirling motion on my toothpick to raise the tongue up a little bit. Don't go PRYING it up, just be gentle because you don't want to break your toothpick inside the phone or break the tongue.
no luck
