Hi people,
as you can see I'm new to the forum so excuse my lack of knowledge.
I did browse through a little when I had my XDA Exec (HTC Universal) but never posted. I've now bought an Orange SPV M3100 from ebay, and I'd like to unlock the sim lock plus upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 so thought I'd join and learn how to mod my new phone/PDA in time for it's arrival next week so I can use my Three UK sim.
I've had a little look at some threads regarding the unlocking linked from another forum, but the threads I read didn't really mean much to me as I'm unsure of the terminology used in regards to software modding. I'm also unsure of what software I need to communicate with my new phone when I update/unlock it.
Any help would be great! In simple terms if anyone can point me in the right direction to unlock and install Windows Mobile 6 then I'd much appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

Brilliant thanks for the link, will have a good read.
OK after browsing forum pages and trying to take in some info to accomplish my goal I just need to double check incase I wreck my phone...
Basicaly all I need to do is unlock my Orange SPV M3100, and would like to install WM6... Are these steps correct?
* I understand that I need to install ACTIVESYNC v4.5, which I've done.
* Then to unlock my mobile I need to download Hermes SIM CID unlock v3a which I've done. Connect my phone, and make sure the green activesync icon appears in the bottom right hand corner of my computer screen. I then run the 'Auto_unlock_v3a.bat' and follow the instructions.
* To flash a rom I need to install Hard SPL v7 which I've downloaded. I assume I run 'RUUWrapper.exe' while my phone is connected via activesync?
* I downloaded the Offical HTC Windows Mobile 6 (HTC_TyTN_WWE_3.54.255.3_6275_1.48.00.10_108) from the link on this forum. To install I guess I just run the .exe file?
If I'm completely wrong then sorry, I'm not trying to be a pain I'm just trying to get my head around the whole process. Also could somebody tell me what a 'radio' is?c Thanks.
there should be a read me .txt file in the sim and cid unlocker.... try reading that if you haent allready
I did have a look last night at one of the 'instruction' text files I think on the SIM CID unlocker, that part of my whole process seems the easiest.
I just want to make sure installing the WM6 update is one correctly for obvious reasons.
Is there an advantage to using a 'cooked' version of WM6 over an official HTC WM6 rom? As it seems many have these custom roms, when I assumed the official would be more stable?
Got this all done in the end, seemed rather easy after I thought it would be some kind of nigtrmare.
I now have an Orange SPV M3100 unlocked, running radio 1.47 and operating on the Dopod official WM6 rom.
All seems well so far!
When I get bored I may have to try some of the cooked roms.
PS... Anyone know where to get some nice themes? I saw a green one somewhere on here (official HTC?).
lol i was in the same boat as you (if you remember) its easy when youve done it you think well wats all the fuss really about....lol
i running a Schaps os really nice esspecially with the sleek touchflo in built
got bored of running offical wm6 rubbish lol
I lasted 1 day with the official Dopod rom, I'm now running the schaps 4.30! Very pleased with it, million times better than the standard official WM6 I had 1st.
...and yeah it's easy peasy flashing new roms, I think it's the terminology that was making me scratch my head with roms, radios etc I didn't know what anything was at first.
Happy now though, just need to find a new case to make my Hermes nice and fresh looking - I hate scratched phones!
dont use the *Suger Cube Method*
same i hate scratched phones...
i tryed the using a suger cube on the orange logo as it says on website this will get rid of the orange logo with out leaving a scratch... It scrached my case like there was no tommoro
so if u find a shop or summet selling them please give me a link lol
thanks

I've seen a couple on ebay for around 30 quid with the HTC logo instead of the horrible Orange branded ones.
If you search for htc hermes housing in titles and descriptions you should see a few on there, some are around 50quid though! Plus most are from Hong Kong so you'd have to wait a week or so to receive the housing.
If you need a guide to housing removal I will post a link on here for you?

Thanks i will consider it i really do hate the scratches on my case makes it look second hand when it is brand new
It does look hard to do and easy to go wrong...
Has anyone tryed a ipod scratch remover as it is the same silver metal as the ipod metal u find on the back
Thanks alot for the great responce!
I've taken apart a couple of phones before (Nokia 3650 and did an Ericsson w800i case swap on an Ericsson K750i) and taken apart my old laptop which I managed to fix and this doesn't look too hard to just do a housing replacement.
I ordered a plain black housing today (no company logos) which I will fit next week (coming from Hong Kong). Cost me £33 in the end I think, hopefully it fits OK.
My LCD is ok bar one VERY annoying scratch! Think I will leave that alone though until it gets worse, then I may flog the phone as is at the end of the year, or maybe just replace the screen if I feel I wanna keep it. I pretty good at keeping things looking nice though so hopefully the screen won't deteriorate too much.
I'll post a pic of before and after when I've done it and point out any difficulties I had, should be OK though!
Looking forward to having a nice new looking Hermes without the Orange branding!
Just to say, I managed to change my housing only took me about 30 minutes was pretty simple. All I needed was a T6 Torx screw driver, a very small phillips (cross head) screwdriver, and a credit card shaped card to lift away the housing after you've taken the screws out of each bit.
Haven't taken a picture yet but happy with it! Will post one soon!

Hi Gurus
Is it safer to apply HardSPL first then SIM unlock or the other way round.
Maybe it doesnt matter.
Whats your view ?
Asif
I did sim unlock first. then I apply hardspl. now flashing different roms. don't know exactly how the process suppose to be but that's what I did and my phone is working like a champ
I did hard spl, then Sim unlocked, not sure if it matters. I had the same query when I unlocked, but wondered if I missed something in the WIKI, so didn't ask due to a good flaming (if you aint done your research you can get crusified in here). Your braver than me lol
@AsifM3100: U need to do the CID/SIM update first; it will load it's own spl and radio. When U have completed the process, then U should install the hardspl before flashing your own radio and or rom.
Sotian
You post made me laugh. However I have made the same observation but couldnt find the answer in the wiki or other posts. Its one of the reasons why I have put off unlocking and flashing for such a long time. So many people who you feel sorry for, cos they have bricked their phones and who are panicking, just get told to do the research. When you are in that state the last thing you need is research. Its such a contrast to the SAP developer network site that I use regularly where evryone is so keen to help (me included).
Having said that its still the best site for us Hermese peeps. I would be in no state to unlock if it wasnt for this site. I just hope nothing goes wrong.

3 thoughts on this:
1. It is scary when the Germans are nicer than us
2. You gotta feel sorry for anyone hanging around in an SAP developer network
3. We aren't so bad when people have done research. It is the "HELP PLZ!!!!! - JUST GOT MY HERMES THIS MORNING AND BRICKED IT!!!!" posts that get people upset. Or the "CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THERE IS A WM6 ROM AVAILABLE FOR THE 8525 BY CINGULAR????" People who do their research and ask don't get crucified too badly - usually.
Oh, and regarding the question - doesn't really matter, since (as galaxys noted) the unlocker uses it's own SPL called SSPL and overrides whatever SPL you have loaded. However, it is good practice to throw HardSPL on their as the first step, since it protects the Hermes from having it's bootloader borked - and that is a good thing!
Hi todd_gj
There are not that many Germans on the SAP dewv Networks. Its mainly asian probably in Southern India. Most of the software is now developed out there, especially sisnce it costs $10 an hour. I bet most WM5/6 is churned out over there.
But I do take your point. You need to do your reading, but i have found a little extra help goes a long way to making sense of it all.

Asif
I have an AT&T 8525 arriving tomorrow and I'm so excited by the possibilities... but at the same time I'm just by all the different jargon and things that everyone seems to know about. I'm coming from a Blackjack which I've hacked the crap out of but this just seems so much more complicated. Anyway, hello, if you have any suggestions for someone who has never had an HTC before, please post them up for me, because I really just don't know where to start.

Oh god... come in sucker.
First of all, before you even start using your phone, SIM unlock it, super CID it, install Bootloader 1.11 but not 1.04 unless you have Olipro 1.02b or you have acces to KITL, then flash every ROM you can find until sleep deprivation affects your marriage your job and you forget the name of your eldest child.
Then after two months of owning a phone that almost never is in a working state, you'll get it stuck in bootloader mode just after you suffered your first white screen of death, and in desperation you will call your carrier with a string of lies and send it back for a replacement.
Then you start the whole process again...
Have fun... not.

LOL - that is funny, but a little pessimistic.
If you have hacked your Blackjack to shreads, you will have no problem.
Start with MrVanx Upgrade Guides to see the process.
Then, once you have a feel for the bits and pieces of the process, read through the wiki and forums and you will be able to sort through the threds of relavence. It is really not THAT hard once you have done a little homework.
Most important thing - the first thing you should do is upgrade the SPL to Olipro's HardSPLv7 - do that first - that way you can recover from just about anything.
Rest assured, if you have a little experience, educate yourself and follow the guides to get started, your device will work 99% of the time. Don't fret.
I am also one of those new users and my 8525 is coming in a few days but i'm a bit technical about computers so i tend to grab it quickly, i DON'T want to play around with my mobile, i just want to unlock it, then put it to some good windows mobile 6, and then forget about it till windows mobile 7 comes, does that mean i use pof's sim unlocker v3a to unlock my phone...
alternative is Hard-SPL, if thati have seen that making your phone supercid seems dangerous and the safer s true i simply apply hard-spl on my phone? (though i don't even know what it does if its a utility or a piece of code integrated into your phone or a custom bootloader ), after applying hardspl, i simply follow the legitimate official instructions to install TyTN Mobile 6 official rom as if my 8525 was a HTC TyTN?
I just want my final goal to be Mobile 6.0 Unlocked in the safest go...

How do you know that WM5 isn't good enough for you? If the only thing you want on your phone is WM6, why didn't you buy one with this pre-installed? Maybe you should spend some more time reading before you get, and break your new toy - all the best links are already posted above and if you'd read them you wouldn't be posting these questions.

Pessimistic?
That link lists no fewer than five operating systems, for one device, all WM6!!!
Which one works??? This is ridiculous!

...head...spinning...
Thanks for the advice to everyone who gave it... I got my Hermes at 1 this afternoon and it's been sitting on my desk, charging and keeping me from really getting any work done all afternoon. I'm going to assume that all the acronyms y'all are throwing at me will be explained in the wikis...
Don't freak them out guys , get it unlock it install official go to bed happy, if you want to go crazy over installing different versions of roms all the time do so but check the safety steps first (many guides here, Mr. Vanx's is a great place to start) mind you there is no 100% safe option and most of the roms are more or less the same, you can always add cab files of things you want, it's better to stick to a clean rom. If you play with it there might be a chance you screw it... badly (even if you know what you're doing)
Me I just updated the official WM6 (which was released sooooo long later) thankfully in your case you don't have to wait.
Either way congrads on the phone and enjoy it, some small issues aside you have a great piece of hardware there.

welcome... i was like you for a while... i'm a new hermes 8525 owner too... read and learn before you really dive in... understand the terminology and jargon for a while... get used to using your phone in stock mode for a while before moving forward... being familiar with it is important... then the first thing you should install when you decide to is hardspl... good luck...
thanks again to everyone! I have to say that the MrVanx Upgrade Guides link was the best, most helpful thing anyone could have pointed me at - step-by-step instructions to flash my hermes with a new ROM. It was great. The forums also yielded CABs and all sorts of other helpful links that have set me up with a near - perfect phone.
Of course, now I'm bored. what's the next step? 'cooking' my own ROMs? where do I start with that? what are 'kitchens'? I know there's lots out there. thanks again for the help y'all have given!!!

So, I can't read your nick without thinking of the Lethal Weapon movie with Chris Rock. He was detective Butters or something. Anywa, I digress...
I think your next logical step is one of two paths:
1. Cooking and coding - either for yourself or for a new release, if you come up with something you think is different or cool for the community - home cooked customization apps are quite popular - settings backup/recover solutions too - fewer options out there for that right now
or
2. Documenting - maybe something you could work with MrVanx on if you want to pick up an area that is not well documented adn try to document it for folks
For cooking, start HERE IN THE WIKI and see what you can figure out. I am not sure if all the latest kitchen releases are in here, but it is a good start. Follow the links then do some additional searches - lot's of cool stuff... enjoy...
Ok, here it is. I have a tytn (herm200) rogers provider in Canada. This part is tough to say, I'm getting old and I can't see the stupid time anymore so I would like to upgrade this thing to wm6 so I can have the larger display (ok so thats a pathetic reason) Can someone tell me what is the safest, simplest, most stable way to get that. Everything else is fine. I use for text email notes etc. I'm on the road a lot. If you make it simple, I'm glad to make a contribution. Thanks in advance and have mercy on an old man.
Eric
Maybe you could just add the htc home cab (do a search) this way you can have a GIANT clock. If you really want to upgrade to WM6 its pretty easy. Check out the WIKI and Load Hard SPL before you try to upgrade. I was a little nervous my first time but once you put hard spl on your phone changing ROMS is easy and addicting.
Thanks, I spent today reading (with glasses) and it is kind of intimidating but HTC and Rogers are no help and there seem to be so many choices in terms of roms and the danger of an expensive brick looming over my shoulder
what exactly do you mean by larger display? maybe you can just change the size of text and install the htc large start menu and large title bar. dont know if they both work in wm5 though
something like the standard wm6 screen would be great

If you want to flash you should do as indicated, and start by reading through the Wiki. Then go and read through the MrVanx guide for HardSPL. Don't flash without loading it first! Here's where you can download HardSPL. After that you just need to find yourself a good ROM. I'm currently running this one on my Hermes and so far I like really it.
But if you don't want to go to the trouble of flashing, but just want a bigger "clock" on your Today screen, then I'd recommend looking into the Pocket Digital Clock Today plugin from ProjectION. It will give you a big digital clock on your Today screen. I've attached a capture of my screen for your reference. Good luck with your flashing!
Thanks for the advice. Got brave last night (the tequila helped) and put in the hard SPL then tried Schapp 4.22. I like it but I dont have enough memory I guess, its kind of slow. Trying to find a light version now

Schaps makes excellent ROM's. But if you're going Schaps I'd recommend his latest 4.30 ROM, rather than 4.22. Or if you want to go up to Windows Mobile 6.1 then try the Faria / Dr Puttingham ROM I linked in the previous post. It's actually a little faster, and it's a Big Storage ROM so you'll get a little more breathing room for installing applications.
I am struggling with my 2-day-old Sprint Touch Pro 2 and to the eye of the newbie I am, it has been crippled so badly, I'm on the verge of canceling the contract. I was patient enough to wait for about 4 months without a phone until Sprint releases this one but now I am so p1553d off I may switch back to iPhone (and before that I was an Sprint user again). Before all these stories I had (and I still have it on my desk) a WM5 iMate Jamin and it worked well without any need for upgrade (well, at least for ME).
But Now: Except for the start menu and and the one that closes the appz I can't use e.g. the battery indicator and sound volume icon on top of the Today screen. Plus I can't install 'advanced configuration tools' and a couple of other appz that used to work smoothly on my WM5. It feels like Sprint have totally butchered the OS; I mean I shoulda been able to do ordinary stuff at least. Paid 450 (no rebate yet) and it's a pile of shame.
Now the question: is there any step by step ROM upgrade process available for this special device, cuz I am afraid I mess up the whole thing upon upgrade.
PS: My ROM version is 1.21.651.3 for that matter.
Thank you in advance.
first you are in the wrong forum... you need the rhodium forum.
since this is primarily a gsm site i would head over to ppc geeks and check out the tp2 forum there.
as far as i know they are still waiting for a unlocker for your phone so no custom roms yet.

Thank you so much for your both corrections and directions. I am gonna keep an eye on that topic out there. Hopefully something comes out in coming weeks..
So I have had my HD2 a few months now and I've been happy with the stock look and feel.
Now I would like to start trying a few of the xda add ons and roms.....
However I do not wish to blindly jump...I figured I would ask the pros here.
So I would like to move up to the newer windows 6.5.x ( not sure what version were at), with the task bar at the bottom.
So I am on the Rogers Network ( Ontario Canada), with an Unlocked HD2.
I bought it on line but was unaware at the time I got wrong unit for here, as I only have edge...no 3g ( Unit from Hong Kong via Vancouver and ACEGSM).
No worries though, as I do not need 3G as I do so little on line on phone...Weather, a little FB, Yahoo mail, MSN Mail....so Edge works awesome for me.
So if I am to flash say mainly a stock look and feel to start, where should I start?
As said, phone came from Hong Kong
OS Version 5.2.21869
Manila Ver. 2.5.19211619.0
ROM Ver 1.66.707.1 WWE
Radio Ver. 2.07.51.22_2
What would my best picks be for my unit?
Is there an Oficial HTC Flash that brings me to the updated windows 6.5.x?
Is there someone who could advise me on what way is dumb guy proof ?
I can flash, as I flashed my Typhoon enough times......but a Typhoon and an HD2 are 2 different beasts.
Many Thanks in advance for any who step into the Yoda roll here!!!!

hey man, instead of flashing a new rom why not try cht first. its an easy .cab install and truely is awesome. after you installed that, you can then go on to mod your phone with new clocks, skins....well just about anything really. cht offers a quality starting block to build upon. just a thought bud........

Many Thanks !! I will try this out first.
So I still nned to find out, is there an HTC rom upgrade to move me up to Windows 6.5.3 ??? (or what ever the latest version is )
Or is that only by using a rom from XDA?
The reason I ask is it would be nice for me to have the buttons along the bottom of the screen, rather then the 2 screen buttons and the start at the top.....my thumb is rather stubby, so getting to start is a 2 hand job
There arent any official 6.5.x roms with the bottom start button, you'd have to HSPL your device and use a cooked rom for XDA.
Check the stickies in the rom development section for all the info you need on this.
Im not gonna make an assumption as to which model of HD2 you have, if it is the american model (green and red hardkeys / big fat double chin) then you need to be aware of the radio your flashing....
Seeing as you got it from HK then its probably not that one, better safe than sorry though....
As long as you read up on the subject first and make sure your reading the correct information for your device you cant really go wrong.
95% of the "bricked" phone horror stories you see on here are down to people not doing their homework first....
You mention that you'd prefer a close to stock feel for a custom rom so probably either an "artemis" or one of dutty's roms would be your best choice....
To be honest though if your happy with the performance your getting from your stock rom then it might not be worth the switch unless you really really want the 6.5.x look.....
+1 on the CHT suggestion too.
A must have (in my humble opinion) for any HD2....
Hope that helps.......
Many many many Thanks !!! Both donwhann and conantroutman !!!!!!
I will try CHT first before a flash, then when I have read, reread, understand the steps required I will try the roms named.
I have to say XDA is an awesome place to learn....it was a godsend giving my SMT 5600 (Typhoon) new life. As my friend who now uses my old phone will tell you.
Now I will be able to keep my HD2 feeling fresh and fun, thanks to XDA and it's awesome people
Thank you greatly for the advise !!!
