Why Hard SPL is needed? - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 ROM Development

Hello friends,
I have some question, My Rom was TNT4 because of more hanging my device I installed TNT 5, but this Rom is hanged my device more than TNT4.
I want to use Maxniper Roms. so i have some question:
1- Can I install new WM6 or WM6.1 or WM7 Roms to my PPC witouht Hard SPL?
2- WHat is Hard SPl? is it needed for new ROMs or for all WM6 roms such as TNT4 or TNT5 or Aserg AKU3.13(WM5) ?
3- Can i come back to past SPL?
my device is I-mate Jamin
Thanks

Dear Friend,
I read all posts about HardSPL
But the question is:
What's the differ between Old Method and New Method(Hard SPL)?
If I install PDIViet_Temp rom first and Install new WM6 or WM6.1 or 7 after it hanging in boot screen and freezing is apperar and IF i use HardSPL method the problems not occur?
Thanks

WHy is needed ?
* More STORAGE area ! the smaller the os.nb the larger your storage!
I encourage all of you who haven't tried this method yet, to try this method. Specially if your favorite rom is relatively a clean rom and consequently has small os.nb. If you want to know how much extra storage you will get by using this method subtract the size of the os.nb (in kb) from 58,368. the difference will be the amount of storage you will gain when you try this new method.
* Faster and safer Rom Upgrade.. If you do install PDAVIET first and overwrite its Data later. It takes more time.
Without HARDSPL. Big Storage mode can't be use.
hma4 has wrote it. Why no one read it??

You can always revert your spl by flashing an operator ROM such as teh Orange WM5 ROM available on the FTP server.

Or O2 ROM Germany.
Info on O2 Germany Website HERE
Download XDA neo original ROM.Version 215447 2154140 021921 (ca. 50 MB)
HERE
or XDA neo RACE Edition.Version 215448 2154141 021921 (ca. 51 MB)
HERE
Different between them?
Nothings different, just first and second SPLASH Screen. And Price Different for XDA Neo Race Edition.
Race Edition is more expensive.

Old method needs to downgrade before you can upgrade. It needs batch files as well as ROM files etc.

This is because HardSPL prevents certain checks being performed, so that the ROM can boot without being an official ROM. Without it, the SPL part of the loading mechanism refuses to boot the OS and instead reverts to bootloader.

The official way to upgrade your Prophet is to use the Rom Update Utility (RUU) provided by your vendor. The RUU is very convinient; it has all the OS files packed together in one archive, so nothing can be misplaced and it is executed just by connecting your device to your PC, no preparation needed. This RUU has the nasty habit the check your Prophet by using the SPL. If your device isn't the same brand (like Q-tek, Dopod, O2, XDA, etc, etc,) it just refuses to work. Because of this it was practical unpossible to post a universal upgrade overhere.
Some genius people developped a way to replace the OS through the "backdoor". With the help of this set of hacking tools it became possible to upgrade your Prophet with a universal, homemade ROM. However, because of the complexity of this method (now refered to as the "Old Method") it was very funurable to errors an needed a lot of preparation. Also the OS-file cannot be combined in one single archive as with the RUU. The cange of loosing or misplacing one is there.
So the challenge became to find a way to use the RUU without the check. So other genius people find out a way to manipulate the SPL so the RUU will bypass its check and will work as if it was released by an offical vendor.
This SPL manipulation can be done for one time use only use SoftSPL (JumpSPL), the original SPL will stay resident but is bypassed prior to running the RUU. If you flash a lot this method is time consuming, but the advantage is that it won't interfere with your device (except upgrading the OS ofcourse...)
An other way is to use HardSPL. This will replace your SPL with a manipulated version wich will stay resident until you install another SPL. This way the first flash-cycle will be a bit complicated but the following atempt will be as easy as connecting your device to a non-Vista PC and run the provided RUU.
The downsite of this successtory is that it installing the HardSPL seems to be a tricky procedure where a lot of people obvious are making a lot of mistakes.

too much information gets confusing

hi all,
i've just bought a t-mobile vario 2
i;ve read the wiki & a few of the posts regarding upgrading
but to be honest it has so much information & sometimes the information is contradictory.. so it gets confusing
i've been using the uni for a year now
my point is
i want 2 upgrade my hermes 2 wm6
my boot screen says
herm300
IPL-1.01
SPL 1.40.Olipro
i can use a different/other sim card than t-mobile
how do i chek if my hermes is CID unlocked
and what radio i'm using & what's my bootloader number??
i try 2 read the splash screen after soft reset but the radio version goes away pretty fast
do i run POF's unlocker v3a? is it safe to run again, even if my phone is cid unlocked?
in order 2 upgrade 2 wm6
do i need to install olipros hard spl 2.10? and then run customruu?
this is what i mean by confusing?
i've upgraded my magician, uni & wizard
however they all had pretty easy/self explanatory directions?
i'm sorry for sounding like a noob, but its new territory....
thanx in advance
Is there a specific reason you want to CID the device? T-Mobile's data plan s pretty great so I have never seen the need to use another sim in my vario. You dont need to CID unlock to upgrade the rom.
As long as you have installed Olipro's spl to protect against bricking your phone it should be fairly safe to install a wm6 rom. If not, definitely install the current version of hard spl.
Once you have installed SPL, you then run the RUU.exe file that usually comes with the rom. Tha majority will have a tick box on the first page that says auto detect, which will check which version of spl you have installed and then run itself accordingly. It is best to have the current hardspl installed though.
Most of them dont touch your extended rom and only replace the OS rom contents. T-Mob's wm5 extended rom customizations wont work with wm6 anyway so you will need to go looking here for a cab file called (I Believe) tmobileukfixed.cab.
You will also need to look for newer versions of your pocket pc software as some older ones dont play nice with WM6.
Good luck, and if in doubt, read MrVanx's upgrade guide here: http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/

FUNDAMENTAL requirement before trying a WM6 upgrade

I have been reading all across the forums how to CID unlock, upgrade etc. However, I am not able to find the ways to do seeminly essential homework before trying to upgrade. These for me are:-
* Finding a way to completely backup all the stuff from original tytn. Like ROM, SPL, IPL, Radio, CIDlock etc. I feel that this is important as if ever I feel like going to the tried old one I should be able to and to preserve the warranty also. Also, the method to roll back if needed. This should be covering re CID locking the phone etc.
It makes sense to create a way to bring the phone to its completlely original shape if we need it
Thanks

You do not need to back up your spl, ipl, etc. because if you need to roll back you can just reflash them on, and they can be found around here and in the wiki.
You cannot un-CIDunlock, but if you use hardspl v7 it will "trick" your phone into thinking it is (when in reality it isnt) so that you do not have to actually unlock it. If you ever need to send it in you can just flash the old spl over it.

HardSPL does not CID unlock. pof's Free Unlocker (a sticky thread) does the SIM and CID unlocking. HardSPL is a new set of bootloaders allowing upgrade utilities to access and read/write to the phone. The most important aspect of this (besides bypassing the CID check) is the security - it has some overwrite protection built in to prevent you from accidentally corrupting the bootloader area, rendering your phone a brick. HardSPL is a safety measure.
If you check THE WIKI here on xda for the Hermes, you will find some stuff on extracting. It is most probable that it will be FAR easier to find new versions of everything you have, rather than trying to back up and restore. The wiki contains MANY shipped ROMs to allow you to restore back to basically the original condition. LOOK HERE for MW5 shipped ROMs and LOOK HERE for WM6 shipped ROMs.

what about the radio upgrade
the htc108 thing
its confusing
on pof's sticky it says to downgrade the radio if u have the htc 108..
but on the radio upgrade sticky, it says u can upgrade any phone[hermes] using custom ruu..

Thanks a lot for the reply, I appreciate the time you spent in expaining this to me and providing these links.
I was wondering if HARDSPL is like shelltool where it will only allow upgrade or flashing of OS part. So, once I use the HARDSPL and flash say HTC official WM6 release or Dopod WM6, will I be ableto to get the bundled radio and SPL and IPL upgrades from these ROMS? and if yes then will HARDSPL get replaced by these SPLs and IPLs built into the ROMS? One more thing, will an upgrade like that can brick the phone as if I rum the official ROM it will try to upgrade the SPL and IPL (I am not sure).
What is the preferred way of upgrading ? unlocking CID by the tool or HARDSPL ?
I have read somewhere that lockwiz tool used for Wizard can save CID also and some tool and put it back also but I dont know how and if the same tool can do it for hermes?
Regards,
Alber

Most cooked roms are os only, but a few have a radio, etc. included. If its os only, flashing will only change the os. You can separately flash radio.
Hardspl is the best because its reversible. Well thats not the best word to describe it....id say because its not permanent. But u know what i mean

Mcorrie1121 is right. I will add a couple of things.
1. HardSPL is not *necessary* for flashing anything, it only makes it safer and allows you to flash ROMs with CIDs that do not match your device without CID unlocking. Your ROM is basically a few parts - OS, Radio, IPL, SPL, ExtROM, MainSplash and SubSplash. The HardSPL will replace the SPL only. Most non-carrier ROM releases are OS only. Most carrier ROMs (as you pointed out) have ALL of these things. As Mcorrie1121 pointed out, you can easily find a radio - check the wiki, search, etc.
2. Once you have upgraded to a cooked ROM (and HardSPL), you will still be able to upgrade to a Shipped Official ROM. You may need to "unpack" it and use the CustomRUU instead of the shipped updater. That is OK though.
3. HardSPL will not allow overwriting of the IPL/SPL except by another HardSPL (see mrvanx.org downgrade guides). You will not have a problem. It will keep your bootloader zone safe.
4. I don't think there is a preferred way. Some people unlock CID, others do not. There is no reason to *not* unlock it, unless you plan to send it back - and I have never heard of someone getting service rejected for this reason. Wring ROM, yes. CID unlocked, no. That said, maybe try without CID unlocking first and then if you find you need to do it for some reason, then do it. You really do not have to do it, since the Custom Updater bypasses the CID check anyway.
5. Regarding the 0108 Radio BL issue, don't worry much about that - it is an old problem. Just don't go below whatever version you have now.

Dear, please help me with one thing-I am terribly confused about the procedure to upgrade my JASJAM to WM6. I understand that one way is to CIS unlock it and install on it the official and dopod releases of WM6. I wanted to know how can I do the same using the HARDspl. I know that I can install the HARDSPL but after that what ??? Can I then run the offcial RUU from HTC or Dopod or I am supposed to do it some other way as I am afraid that it may contain the SPL and IPL and can break by phone OR I have to use some customRUU (I dont know) OR I am supposed to extract the OS from these official releases (I dont know how) OR ..
Can you please clear these confusion??
I have:-
* I-Mate JASJAM, CID locked i suppose as when I run official HTC or dopod it says this update utility is not for this
*I really wanted to save my devices complete state and a way to revert it to the way it was like SPL, IPL, OS, Radio, CID lock etc.

There are upgrade guides there and guides to put it back the way it was (OS, Radio, IPL, SPL, MainSplash and SubSplash) - it is all covered.
The upgrade guides will get you through the upgrade process. The only thing you need to do after that to use an official upgrade is to unrar (using winrar or something) the executable file and take the nbh and us it with the CustomRUU, which can be found HERE .

How to remove SPL/IPL from an official ROM?

I installed Olipro Hard SPL and am now able to try any wm6 ROM without SPL.
After having tried many of them, I would like to downgrade and try the last Qtek shipped ROM for wizard: QT_FR_9100_2170706_21707106_20710_180406.
But no matter how I try, I'm now unable to install that wm5 ROM.
Even my former SPV M3000 shipped ROM refuse to re-install.
I guess it's either a problem of RUU, or more probably a problem of SPL on those ROM.
I'd like to remove their SPL, but I don't know how to do.
Any tutorial, advice, or special no ID RUU that fits well those wm5 ROM?
The actual problem with this Rom is the RUU.
It won't let you downgrade.
However it is wise to get rid of the IPL/SPL, for safety and for keeping the hard SPL.
You can use typho5.exe to disassemble the ROM in parts, and use nbftool to re-assemble it without using the IPL/SPL.
They are available in the ROM kitchens.
Use the ruu in the hard spl thread for flashing.
Thanks for the reply, Equinoxe.
Actually I've already tried many RUU, not only the Ruu already included in the official ROM.
Mun RUU etc. But no luck, all kind of error occured but the the flashing remains impossible.
I'll try to find the tools you told me about and see whether removing IPL/SPL makes it easier to flash those ROM.
If you know any special RUU suitable for such a downgrade, please, let me know.

If Mun's RUU didn't do the trick, you better use the CORE pro kitchen.
You can extract the parts with typho5.exe
usage:
typho5.exe -x nk.nbf
all the parts will be created/extracted
Delete all the IPL_1 IPL_2 SPL_1 and SPL_2 parts
use nbftool to reassemble the ROM. (read the PDf to see the starting addresses, although nbftool should be patched to show the right addresses)
Good luck

Hi Equinox, thanks for the reply.
I started trying to get typho working, but all I could see was a brief command prompt and nothing else.
Finally, I ended up using Molski DevPack, which already includes those tools, in quite an ergonomic way.
After finding a guide about using those tools, It took me, no kidding about 10 mn for the whole process and 5 more to do the flashing.
I used nb2nbf_wizard to reassemble the ROM with only the parts I wanted to keep, including the extended ROM.
Regarding the address, it did it automatically, except for the HTC logo that I did manually, and also for the name of the Extended and Logo I renamed according to the sample jpeg showing that soft in action.
Since I kept the extended ROM and the original splash and logo screen, and I now have an authentic Qtek Wizard, just for fun.
But the most important is the feeling of building one's own ROM, according to your own taste and choice. Wonderful.
You were right: after having removed SPL/IPL and rebuilt the ROM, the Mun RUU worked flawlessly to flash my so called Qtek ROM onto my wizard.
In the meantime, It got rid of the pile of miscellanous splash screens and logos that were left since the install of all previous wm6 ROM.
Thanks again for the tips.
P.S.: the guide I used to understand how to use the Molski DevPack:

Hi ady
before we go further I need to know 2 things.
Do you have a HTC athena or variant.
Did you use the wrapper and follow the instructions from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316846
hello, i have htc x7500 advantage and i want to install the english wm 6 rom, wwe. first i have to unlock it, right?
I didn't used that. if i will, i don't need anymore athenaunlocker? what's the difference between athenaunlocker and hard-spl from that link?
You have to explain WHAT HTC wm6 ROM you want to install First
If you have and old WM5 x7500 just register on www.htc.com and download the HTC OFFICIAL WM6 update for YOUR language!!
ONLY
If your X7500 is SIM LOCKED you need to UNLOCK it first(wrapper isn't for SIM Unlock) and ATHENA UNLOCKER meets your needs
i wanna install this rom: AP Dual 3.0.

If you want the AP3 0r other roms in the sticky made for SPL 1.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397518
then you should run the athena wrapper that Olipro has made to be as much foolproof as possible
As he says "your device MUST BE RUNNING WINDOWS MOBLE and MUST BE SYNCED WITH THE PC.
to recap: IF YOU ALREADY HAVE 1.20/1.25, DO NOT USE THIS."
It seems that you must use the same USB port as well.
i have allready downloaded that rom, all i need to know is the difference between that 2 files: activeunlocker and hard-SPL. And, as I saw on a post of that link, i can use one or other from that files. now, tell me, activeunlocker should I copy on PPC? (i will receive it tomorrow, and i want to know what i have to do) Because from PC doesn't work, it gives me an error.
ATHENA UNLOCKER is needed ONLY if you have to unlock the SIM too.
E.G. If your phone, WITH ORIGINAL ROM, can use ANY SIM, you don't need to run ATHENA UNLOCKER
As CMONEX said here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2030747&postcount=81
wrapper is hardspl + customruu
unlocker is hardspl + sim unlocker
SPL means a part of "bios" used ALSO for defining your device language and vendor (HTC, T-Mobile, DOPOD,...) and avodi flashing a "non original" ROM
To flash ANY rom you need to overcome those informations. You can do this running an application, but if something goes wrong during the FLASH and your device doesn't start anymore... you are lost. You can't run the application again, because you haven't the OS!
HARD SPL has been developed to avoid this problem. It is a NEW SPL (1.2 or 3.x) developed from OLIPRO (and CMONEX too for 3.xx) flashed into your device. it is IN the "BIOS" so, even if your OS doesn't start, you can flash ANY ROM
Both, WRAPPER and UNLOCKER will flash HARDSPL. You need only the WRAPPER if your phone can use any SIM!
When you choose the ROM some are build for the SPL 3.x and other using the 1.2 SPL.
With WRAPPER or UNLOCKER you have the 1.2 SPL release, if you want to test a 3.x ROM you need to flash the AP4 rom.
The only differences between SPL 1.2 and 3.x are the "partitioning" of the device. AP4 needs more space for the system files, then the 3.x SPL was developed to increase the System Partition. SPL 3.x flashing IS ONE WAY ONLY, (since Cmonex relase the tool to go back): if you flash AP4 you CAN'T flash any origninal HTC ROM

Listen to what Sergiopi said.
You will always get an error running these programs unless you have an activesync connection to the ppc when you run the program.
The way you were talking I thought you had already tried to run it on your PPC
sergiopi thank you soo much. you are so kind. thank you.

Newbie needs help with updating T-Mobile MDA Touch plus (aka HTC Touch Dual)

Hi @ all,
after reading many and many threads here in this forum (and even others) I thought I gathered enough information for starting with update my T-Mobile MDA. The original image shows the following versions:
ROM-Version: 1.35.111.13
ROM-Date: 03/14/08
Radio-Version: 1.58.21.24
Protocol-Version: 25.65.30.04H
I saw that HTC offers an official WM6.1 build for this device and since I'm running WM6.0 with many obvious bugs (and slowlyness) I decided it can't get worst.
Fortunately I found the download-link here in this forum for the official WM6.1 Professional build in german, because HTC denies access telling me that this build can't be installed on a foreign (OEM) device. After downloading the image from the link I've found here I started the updater. But even this updater refused attempts telling me that the VendorID is wrong.
As stated before I read and read and read before trying the update - but it went wrong finally. By using uSSPL 1.16 I started the update process with the original HTC updater. Everything went fine until 15% then the updater again quotes that my device has a wrong VendorID. From that moment on I saw only the rainbowscreen telling me the following:
(Top right corner: RUUNBH)
NIKI200
SPL-1.18.0000
CPLD-4
I assume that the SPL on my device is guilty of deciding which firmware to install. Luckily I found a way of still booting my device using MTTY 1.42 and sending "boot" as command. Then it booted - but I have to do that right now every time I boot up the device - it doesn't bootup by itself :-(
Here's my first question: How can I achieve that the device boots up completely and automatically again without sending a "boot" command?
I certainly still want to upgrade to ANY better OS than the current one - it just sucks! So, here're my further questions and I know there are many, many threads here and I think that read all of them according to this, but I'm still confused:
Q: What do I need as prequisites for updating this T-Mobile branded device with the official HTC Image? I'm sure SPL 1.15 and 1.16 are "too old"(??) for dealing with this brand new release firmware, right? Maybe that was the cause why the update failed.
Q: Is it necessary to install a hardSPL before starting the update? I would prefer NOT to modify the hardSPL because if I brick the device totally, I lose warranty - I just want to prevent that! If anyone tells me here, that there's really no risk of flashing hardSPL and that this certainly will work (due to his/her own experience) then I sure would proceed. BTW: I'm a newbie to this forum here and by dealing with consumer PDAs and flashing them in general, but I'm working for a company who's manufacturing such devices for the industry in rugged environments as technical supporter/consultant therefore the basics an beyonds are clear to me - only this specific field is new.
Final question: According to my questions above, a structured list (Step-By-Step) of what is necessary to do to "convince" this T-Mobile device of loading foreign Firmware is highly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your support!
Reingucker
If you can actually get in with the boot command from mtty you're in luck.
If you're getting the vendor ID error then you'll need to unlock the device (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395945)
You don't need to install a hard spl, once you're unlocked and booted copy over the sspl file from the spl thread to your device (the device itself and not the SD) then take out your SD and run the sspl
This will then reboot the phone to bootloader and allow the rom to be flashed without a hard spl. As the new rom comes with spl 1.22 this will be installed.
WOW - thanks very much for this fast response!!
I've read the article of the link you quoted. There it is said, that I have to flash hardSPL 1.15 before proceeding. So I guess, there's no way around of modifying the device in such a manor that it would be noticed in cases of warranty repair, right?
Cheers,
Frank
hardSPL is an advisable safeguard while flashing but you can always revert to a stock SPL afterwards if you need to.
If you went to SPL 1.22 you'd need to do that anyway if you needed to return the device as T-mobile don't have a rom with that spl yet.
Dear randomelements,
THANKS VERY MUCH for your fast response and help!
FINALLY I DID IT!!!
BUT :-D one question left:
Now I've flashed the official HTC Image with WM6.1.
Is there any way of getting the T-Mobile splash screen back onto
the device? I've found the splash-screen flasher, but do you know
where to get the T-Mobile splash-image?
Thanks again very much,
Reingucker
There are some t-mob roms around for download (links are somewhere in the forum)
Using the nbh tools the splash screens can be extracted from that and repackaged.
I'll have a look when I get home tonight.
OK, great - thanks!
In the meanwhile I'm searching around for this as well. If I'm faster I'll let you know.
Since my device is "still" on hardSPL 1.15, would you recommend to upgrade to 1.22 or is that not necessary - or, better to say, what would be the advantage resp. the disadvantage?
Cheers,
Frank

I have 1.22 for two days now an it is so fast. I think there are no disadvantages

It's usually better to have a later SPL and everyone is saying that 1.22 makes the device run smoother.
Liquid Silver has created a 1.22 HardSPL so you might like to give that a try - I've been using it without issues:

*** Request Completed ***
OK guys, especially randomelements,
I'm through! I did everything I wanted to do... Time to setup the device aknew.
Thank you very, very much!!
Hope the device works more stable now.
Have a great day!
Reingucker
Grrrrr.....
Okay, one more thing....
I tried to replace the "animated.gif" in the /windows directory.
But the file is a system file and I always get an error message
that this operation isn't allowed.
How can I replace this?
Thanks in advance,
Reingucker
You can replace it with Resco Explorer or Total Commander, because these File Explorers can overwrite system files!
*** Request Now Really Completed ***
OK, thanks for the hint....
I achieved it by changing the registry entry that links to the file...
However... learning that these two apps can do that helps certainly...
Thanks again and....
GOOD BYE for today!!
Cheers,
Reingucker

You wrote you need an update from WM6.0 to WM6.1,
i think you are a german user, so if you want a original WM6.1 from T-Mobile try this <<link>>
Its the T-Mobile Update to WM6.1 including the start splash screen
